Testo completoComplexes are defined by projectile point typology and substantiated by other technological traits and patterns of lithic raw material utilization. Early (fluted point associated) Paleo-Indian complexes are, in suggested chronological order, Gainey, Parkhill, and Crowfield. Late Paleo-Indian complexes are Holcombe and Madina. All date between 11 000 and 10 000 B.P. according to geological considerations, pollen dating, and comparisons to dated materials elsewhere.
Seasonal rounds of resource exploitation within broad territorial ranges are suggested for Gainey and Parkhill populations. Commodity exchange involving particular implement categories provides evidence of band interaction. Mortuary practices and religious beliefs are suggested by possible cremation burials at the Crowfield site. Other significant behavioural patterns are revealed through inter- and intra-site analyses.

Testo completoThe theoretical guide for this study is the premise that an understanding of culture change can only be achieved by considering evolutionary sequences in all their particularistic complexity, taking into account both generalizations about human behaviour and contingent influences. The methodological guide is the concept of multidimensional constraint, the idea that human behaviour is the rational negotiation of objectives that are constrained by both internal and external parameters operating in a nested series of contexts. These principles are used to develop a methodology utilizing detailed environmental description, summary statistics, and careful evaluation and interpretation to investigate correlations between settlement locations and environmental features at the local, regional, and pan-regional scales. The overall objective is a well-grounded explanatory narrative outlining the multiple dimensions of constraint that influenced Late Woodland settlement in south-central Ontario.
The ensuing investigations yield numerous insights into Iroquoian cultural ecology and illustrate the complexity of the long-term settlement shift. In broad outline, it involves an initial phase of settlement, indicating continuity with the Middle Woodland period, an expansion phase, involving the occupation of analogous physiographic zones throughout south-central Ontario, and a final contraction phase, involving coalescence into the uplands of northern Simcoe County. At the local and regional scales, these phases involve slightly different adaptive strategies over time and space, influenced by constraints that included community population size, intensifying food production, temporal and spatial climatic variation, foraging logistics, changing distributions of natural resources, and geo-politics. These results demonstrate the adaptive capacity of these Iroquoian populations, confirm the efficacy of the methodological approach, and establish an ecological context for future investigations dealing with the social aspects of Late Woodland culture change in South-central Ontario.

Testo completoIt was estimated that at a carbon offset price of $ 25.14/t CO2 e provided enough incentive for feedlot operators to intensify their operations and a price of $ 109.51/t CO2e to change their feeding strategies. The mean willingness to accept a cost to change a conventional practice to a greenhouse gas emissions reducing practice was estimated to be 62% of the carbon revenue. The regression analysis demonstrated that producers' willingness to accept compensation was influenced by the individual's characteristics, farm structure variables, and practice attributes. Policy makers may use these results in the design of greenhouse gas reduction strategies for the beef sector.

Testo completoAIDS Service Organizations (ASOs) have a central role in providing HIV/AIDS related services to rural communities in Ontario, Canada. To date, very little information has been published on the experience of people employed by ASOs who work in rural Canadian communities. In an effort to learn more about this important topic, this research explored the challenges, risks and benefits people in the field associate to their work. Using A. Giorgi (1985) and B. Giorgi (2006) phenomenological method a purposive sample of three participants were interviewed on two separate occasions. From 179 significant statements, 23 themes emerged to be part of three categories that included: Rural Communities, AIDS Service Organizations, and Workers' Experiences. Through the unfolding of the participants' experiences it became apparent that HIV / AIDS remains a complex phenomenon that is influenced by the structural aspects of Society.

Testo completoThe rise of industrial capitalism and the growth of the private market in the mid-1880s brought forward the factory system which depended on an unskilled labouring class and the use of power-driven machinery. Thus system of production created many risks for workers including accidents and diseases, and resultant financial problems caused by an inability to work.
The role of, and interactions among, workers, employers, and the state were key in determining the particular patterns of policy development. Although health and safety policies provided only minimal protection to workers, while at the same time causing little disruption to business, the policies were more beneficial to workers when labour played an active role in the policy-making process.

Testo completoMass losses follow the trend: Chamaedaphne calyculata >> S. angustifolium > S. fuscum. Between species differences were far more significant than differences between locations or depths, indicating that litter quality is the major control on decomposition.
McHg concentrations generally increased during decomposition, particularly near the water table: for C. calyculata up to 13000%, for the two Sphagnum mosses up to 500%, suggesting that decomposition stimulates mercury methylation or McHg scavenging.
The discovery of a high McHg substance on C. calyculata leaf surfaces (25 ng g-1) suggests that much plant MeHg data may by skewed by the presence of a biologically active 'film'.

Testo completoThe study found that a student's socio-economic background largely determine her/his educational stream, be it basic, general or advanced. For example, all the participants in the vocational stream were working-class students while the participants that were streamed into the university bound program were from middle-class families. Teachers within the system also treated the parents differently. Middle-class parents had a greater degree of reciprocity between themselves and teachers compared to working-class parents.

Testo completoDynamic and static chamber techniques were used to measure surface fluxes of CO2 and CH4, respectively, and soil gas concentrations were sampled with probes. In the old field and forest plantations, surface soil CO2 flux ranged from 2.9 to 27 g CO2 m-2 d-1 and 2.0 to 39 g CO2 m -2 d-1 respectively. Significant differences due to age and species of plantation were observed. Seasonal variations in CO2 efflux from the soil surface and within the soil profile were related to variation in soil temperature and moisture. Uptake of CH4 was observed at all sites and there was no significant differences in flux due to vegetation type or age. Maximum rate of CH4 consumption was 6.3 mg CH4 m-2 d-1. Methane uptake was positively related to soil moisture conditions.
The carbon content of the soil increased in all sites following the establishment of vegetation on sandy parent material. Carbon content was greatest in the upper soil profile. Rates of carbon accumulation ranged from 109 to 426 g m-2 y-1. Soil carbon increased with increasing age of plantation during the first 30 years following the establishment of vegetation on parent material, but declined as the forest plantation matured.

Testo completoThis study intends to highligt an interesting pedagogical experiment that started some twenty years ago in Canada and that has since known, in all the provinces and in Ontario in particular, a noteworthy development. Its aim is to make young anglophones bilingual by "immersing" them in a French linguistic bath, starting as early as kindergarten for the most successful option, or later in primary school. From the outset, this experiment has been strictly supervised by researchers and academics, and the positive assessments that have been published over the years have contributed to its development as has the action of the Canadian parents for French, a powerful association lobbying et a national, provincial and local level to make the teaching of the two official languages accessible to as many children as possible. Only recently have a few doubts been raised about the students' competence in French : if their understanding is ewcellent their oral expression seems quite belwo expectancy. Yet such criticism has not hindered the progression of those programs which is in keeping with the legislative evolution of ontario and canada in favor of bilingualism. The greatest obstacle to a quicker development is the difficulty of recruiting enough competent teachers. Bilingualism through immersion offers young people a better opportunity to fit in in a country with two official languages and is viewed as a fundamental caracteristic of Canadian national identity

Testo completoThe five options were simulated using the proposed site and building of a low-rise, multi-residential housing project in Ottawa, where only the planting design varied for each simulation. The four alternatives involved: (1) replacing 70% of lawn areas with woody plants grouped in mulched beds, (2) eliminating turf and including 85% woody plants and a hard surface area of 15%, (3) replacing 70% of the turf area with naturalized woodland plantings and (4) replacing all turf areas with 85% naturalized woodland and tall grass prairie plantings and including a hard surface area of 15%. Only species that are well-adapted to the site conditions were selected for the alternatives. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Is there a connection between structural and cultural conditions in Ontario English Language Public schools and results in student achievement in Provincial large-scale assessment in Grade Three Writing? The hypothesis is that development of professional community and technical culture, supported by shared leadership for school improvement and parental involvement, build organizational capacity to achieve gains in student academic performance in large-scale assessment. Thirteen schools, thirteen principals, and eighteen teachers participated in the study. Four schools were identified as high-performance, four as medium-performance, and five as lower-performance schools based on Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) large-scale assessment results for 1997-98 and improvement/lack of improvement in performance from 1997-98 to 1998-99. The study concludes that reform through assessment tends to increase focus on program, student learning, student achievement, and school improvement. Familiarity with EQAO's purpose and format, technical changes in writing instruction, professional development support, and school goal setting significantly correlate with improvement in student performance. "Markers" for EQAO are viewed as respected and informed teacher leaders. Teachers like to spend time in markers' classrooms. Reform through assessment has resulted in more relevant teacher in-service. Teachers are using previous EQAO assessment questions to familiarize students and parents with the process and methodology of Provincial assessment. Teachers reported a need to share workload and indicated greater appreciation of each other's expertise. Evidence of increasing development of professional community in high-performance schools and a more 'technical culture" through use of more precise language, getting students to "explain your thinking", and increasing use of rubrics and journal writing emerged in the study. High-performance schools reported that a shared leadership model was developing. Parental support through better conceptual understanding of program and assessment and acceptance of responsibility for homework completion as an extension of classroom practice were viewed as important factors in successful school performance. Teachers and principals agreed that change in public education is needed. Teachers were generally not in agreement with the method of implementing increased accountability in their classrooms through large-scale assessment. A lack of expertise in the use of data to modify and improve instruction was viewed as a need for concentrated professional development.
