Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The Use of Episodic Pools by Amphibians in Lowland Habitats of Southwestern PolandEpisodic pools are one of the most unstable water habitats. They arise rarely, at least once every few years and last a relatively short period (in principle one vegetative season). They are characterized by a lack of water flora and fauna. Later, a few aquatic organisms inhabit them. Of the 15 amphibian taxa inhabiting Polish lowlands, six anurans use episodic pools for mating and larval development;Bombina bombina, Pelobates fuscus, Epidalea [=Bufo] calamita, Pseudepidalea [=Bufo] viridis, Hyla arborea, andPelophylax [=Rana] esculentuscomplex [probably onlyPelophylaxkl.esculentus].

Abstract (sommario):
Cryptosporidium is a major cause of diarrhoea outbreaks linked to swimming pools, but little is known about the frequency of contamination. The primary aim was to investigate the occurrence and concentration, through sampling and modelling, of Cryptosporidium oocysts in leisure pools. Secondary aims were to compare detections with operational parameters, provide the evidence-base for guidance, and improve sampling capacity and interpretation for public health investigations. Up to 1000 L pool water was sampled during swim sessions once weekly for 10 weeks from 8 August 2017 at six volunteer pools. Oocysts were detected by microscopy in 12/59 (20%) pool water samples, at least once in each pool; 8/12 (66%) detections were in August when bather loads were highest. At three pools, 1 L filter backwash was sampled weekly and oocysts were detected in 2/29 (7%) samples, following detections in pool water. The probabilities of a bather contaminating the pool ranged from 1 in 1000 to over 1 in 10,000. Monte Carlo analysis showed that when high bather numbers caused contamination on over 70% of days, multiple events per day were more likely than single events. In these generally well-managed leisure pools, Cryptosporidium risk related to high bather loads. We conclude that public awareness campaigns for bather hygiene, and reminding pool operators of current guidance for managing faecal accidents, should be ahead of peak swim season.

Abstract (sommario):
Free amino acid pools were examined for cultures of vegetative cells, gametes, and mature zygotes of the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (Dangeard). The total pool of amino acids found in premature gametes of strains 137c+ (10.0 pmol∙μg protein−1) and 137c− (10.8 pmol∙μg protein−1) decreased to levels about half that seen in vegetative 137c− cells (19.8 pmol∙μg protein−1). Following light activation, amino acid pools in these gametes increased to 18.7 pmol∙μg protein−1 in 137c+ cells and 20.0 pmol∙μg protein−1 in 137c− cells. With the exception of cystine, individual amino acid pools in these cells had increased once more to levels similar to those seen in vegetative cells grown in liquid medium. Levels of cystine remained one to two orders of magnitude lower than that seen in vegetative cells. Mature 137c + and 137c− gametes mixed in solutions of either 2 mM cystine or 2 mM cysteine (half-cystine) suffered a 52–64% reduction, respectively, in the number of vis-à-vis conjugative pairs formed. This suggests that pools of endogenous cystine may play a role in the onset of mating. In zygotes levels of all amino acid pools, except histidine, were depressed; levels of cystine, valine, and phenylalanine were nondetectable in these cells.Key words: Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, amino acid pools, gametes, zygotes, cystine.

Abstract (sommario):
A three dimensional model with a moving heat source is developed to describe heat transfer and fluid flow in transient weld pools. Full penetration and free top and bottom surfaces are incorporated in the model in order to simulate the welding process more practically. The influence of plate thickness and welding current on the dynamics of weld pools is analyzed using calculated data. It is shown that when the workpiece is nearly penetrated, the depth of weld pool increases quickly. Also, the elevation of the top surface decreases quickly once the full penetration status is established.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Use of rock-cut stepped pools for immersion in harvested rainwater is first attested in Judean source material of the second century BCE and on archaeological record shortly thereafter. As argued here, the practice became widespread due to the impact of Greco-Roman ideas about health and well-being. Immersion of the body in water was seen in the Greek medical tradition as a beneficial activity; it balanced the humors, opened harmful blockages in the skin membrane, and helped facilitate unction. Once these ideas became widespread in Judea, local purification rituals followed, and began incorporating immersion in water. The rabbinic dichotomy between purification and cleansing was likely irrelevant for most Judeans in the late Second Temple period, who probably also saw immersion as beneficial for personal hygiene. For this reason, stepped pools nearly disappear from archaeological record with the rise of public bathhouses, which offered the convenience of large and well-maintained immersion pools in exchange for a fee.

Abstract (sommario):
This article re-examines the swimming pool as a potent building type embodying the salient characteristics of Modernity. Not only did the building of modern public swimming pools celebrate new materials, engineered solutions and technologies but they also reflected rapidly changing attitudes to the body, leisure and fitness in line with Modernist aspirations. Public pools thus created new communal places where relationships between social, natural and built environments could be explored and embraced. In understanding these social and design aspirations to create the Modern ‘good life’, a set of English and Australian waterside open-air swimming pools and lidos of the 1930s – Scarborough (1915–1934), Tinside (1935), the Eastern Beach Reserve Geelong (1939) and the North Sydney pool (1936) – are described and compared in their past and present state. These seaside pools offered places for people to seek refuge within a setting which remains at once natural but also controlled and shaped, while also promoting the psychological and physiological benefits of open-air activities. In re-appraising the fate of the public swimming pool today, the article concludes by highlighting two successful contemporary examples, the Badeschiff in Berlin (2009) and the Copenhagen Harbour Bath (2003). We argue that these new pools have grown out of precedents found in the early twentieth century but have reinvigorated the type by offering new interpretations of designing with nature, and providing facilities more relevant to current leisure and environmental trends. Their success lends support to the need for careful documentation and conservation of earlier surviving exemplars.

Abstract (sommario):
The 2015 presidential election in Côte d'Ivoire was seen as an important test for the country given the 2010 post-election crisis. Although the 2015 polls were peaceful, they were affected by problems not new to Côte d'Ivoire: lack of competition due to non-participation of major political actors, low voter turnout, mistrust in electoral institutions. The unpreparedness of the Commission Electorale Indépendante (CEI) was also problematic, especially with respect to the revision of the voter list. Due to the boycott of partisans of former president Laurent Gbagbo and because of the support of the Rassemblement des Houphouëtistes pour la Démocratie et la Paix (RHDP), President Alassane Ouattara's re-election was essentially a given from the start. With the ruling coalition firmly in control, Côte d'Ivoire appears stable. However, the country's democratic deficit might lead to renewed violence once the RHDP has to pick Ouattara's successor.

Abstract (sommario):
Researchers have recently focused their attention on the chicken producers' inability to produce in sufficient quantities and quality, which contributes to the high price of locally produced chickens. The study investigated the profit efficiency of broiler farms in Ondo state, Nigeria. In order to collect cross-sectional data from sixty owners of broiler poultry farms in the study area between October 2021 and January 2022 for the 2021 production year, a multistage survey technique was used. The data were an-alyzed using descriptive statistics, gross margin and Cobb-Douglas stochastic profit frontier model. Average stock size and mortality rate of farmers were 1826 birds and 3.3% respectively while Ross strain of birds was most preferred birds. The result indicated that broiler farming is a lucrative busi-ness with a profitability index of 45.5 %. The results reveal that the cost of feed, cost of labour used and day-old chicks were the variables that significantly explained the profit efficiency of broiler poul-try farms while household size, years of experience and other income source were the profit inefficien-cy variables. The study recommends government supports to broiler farms in form of input subsidies to enhance efficiency

Abstract (sommario):
Selected physicochemical features, litter input rates and the abundance and distribution of common invertebrates were studied in Brown Hill Creek, a small intermittent stream that flows annually for about 6 months near Adelaide, South Australia. Permanent pools had very highly coloured waters and long-term low oxygen levels in summer, apparently related to seasonality of litter inputs from Eucalyptus obliqua. The larvae of only two species of fully aquatic insect, Leptorussa darlingtoni and Lectrides varians (Trichoptera : Leptoceridae), remained in permanent pools once flow had ceased. A more diverse fauna, dominated by Riekoperla naso (Plecoptera : Gripopterygidae), was present during winter when the stream was flowing. Most of the more abundant insect species had extremely unusual life histories, including terrestrial egg deposition (Leptorussa darlingtoni and Lectrides varians), rapid larval growth at low temperatures (Riekoperla naso), and advanced ovoviviparity (Austrocerca tasmanica).

Abstract (sommario):
The Time for Change Model once again correctly predicted the winner of the US presidential election. In late August, before the Republican and Democratic national conventions, the model predicted that President Obama would win 50.6% of the major party vote to 49.4% for his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney. When all the votes are counted, it now appears that Obama will end up with approximately 51.8% of the vote, making the Time for Change Model one of the nation's most accurate statistical forecasting models. Despite the fact that this prediction was made more than two months before Election Day, the Time for Change forecast was more accurate than the results of many national polls conducted immediately before the election including the Gallup and Rasmussen tracking polls both of which predicted a popular vote win for Mitt Romney.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract High-resolution idealized numerical simulations are used to examine the turbulent removal of cold-air pools commonly observed in mountain valleys and basins. A control simulation with winds aloft increasing from 0.5 to 20 m s−1 over 20 h combined with typical cold-air pool stratification illustrates the interplay over time of lowering of the top of the cold-air pool, spillover downstream of the valley from the upper reaches of the cold-air pool, wavelike undulations affecting the cold-air pool’s depth and stratification across the valley, and smaller temporal- and spatial-scale Kelvin–Helmholtz waves within the uppermost layers of the cold-air pool. The heat budget within the cold-air pool demonstrates the nearly compensating effects of vertical and horizontal advection combined with turbulent heating of the upper portion of the cold-air pool and cooling in the layers immediately above the cold-air pool. Sensitivities of turbulent mixing in cold-air pools to stratification and upstream terrain are examined. Although the characteristics of the turbulent mixing differ as the stratification and topography are modified, a bulk parameter [the cold-air pool Froude number (Fr)] characterizes the onset and amplification of turbulent mixing and the time of cold-air pool removal. When Fr > 1, Kelvin–Helmholtz waves and turbulent heat fluxes commence. Turbulent heat flux and wave activity increase until Fr = 2, after which the cold-air pool breaks down and is removed from the valley. The rate of cold-air pool removal is proportional to its strength; that is, a strong inversion generates larger heat fluxes once turbulent erosion is underway.

Abstract (sommario):
Two hundred forty-six snap bean genotypes and 49 dry beans representing both centers of domestication and six bean races with materials from Europe, Asia, and the Americas were genotyped using a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array. The data was analyzed for expected heterozygosity, K-means clustering, principal components, phylogenetic relationships, and population substructure. When all gene pools of snap bean were assembled, the expected heterozygosity was roughly equivalent to a carefully chosen panel of dry beans representing all bean races and centers of domestication demonstrating the genetic richness of snap materials in total. K-means clustering and K = 2 structure analysis showed significant mixing of gene pools in the European and American commercial snap materials and the dominance of the Andean center of domestication among commercial contemporary snap beans. Conversely, the same analysis showed that Chinese, Iberian, and heirloom materials were underrepresented in contemporary materials. Further, Structure analysis revealed eight distinct groups within snap beans. Two showed strong kinship to the Middle American center of domestication, three to the Andean center of domestication, and three showed admixture between the two centers. Snap beans may have been independently derived from dry beans more than once and from both centers. Overall, we identified eight potential germplasm pools for snap bean.

Abstract (sommario):
SIX YEARS AFTER THE ELECTIONS OF 1990 FOLLOWING THE DEFEAT OF the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) which had ruled Nicaragua since it led the popular insurrection to overthrow the corrupt and dictatorial Somoza regime in 1979, the Sandinistas experienced their second bruising encounter with electoral democracy. Daniel Ortega, who as outgoing president of the republic was defeated by Violeta Chamorro of the National Opposition Union (UNO) in 1990, was once again defeated. This time the defeat was much less of a shock. Chamorro's victory in 1990 had surprised many observers despite the fact that a number of opinion polls had predicted the result. These had been dismissed by the Sandinistas as politically suspect as they had been carried out by Costa Rican organizations. Up until the opening of the FSLN's campaign in June 1996, polls had shown Ortega as the clear underdog with a gap of up to 20 per cent between him and Arnoldo Alemán, the candidate of the rightist Liberal Alliance. However, an unexpectedly cohesive and effective FSLN campaign had narrrowed the gap and by September polls were showing the two with between 38 and 46 per cent each. But, as in 1990, the ‘don't knows’ would vote decisively against the FSLN on polling day.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe interpretation of archaeological finds in light of Talmudic evidence has often resulted in simplistic, “one-to-one” correlations that distort our understanding of “Judaism” in Graeco-Roman Palestine. This is especially true of “stepped pools” and stone vessels which, when seen as markers of Jewish ethnicity, need to be understood with the biblical tradition in mind. Biblical notions of purity and holiness further enable us to appreciate the persistence of ritual purity practices after 70 C.E. The subsequent efforts of the rabbis to regulate such practices, especially those pertaining to sexuality and the household, reflect the tenacity of biblical perceptions of purity and holiness especially among commoners, who had their own understanding of their significance. Once it is realized that the boundaries between Jews were not strictly drawn, material finds can be better assessed, and rabbinic Judaism can be properly understood as having evolved out of a biblically derived, “complex common Judaism.”

High Frequency Traders undoubtedly have an advantage over the average trader or trading desk because they incorporate nefarious devices into their trading schemes such as Flash Trading, Dark Pools and Quote Stuffing. In addition, they usually locate their servers as close to the exchange servers as possible so their data travels the shortest possible distance. However, adding spam-control techniques to control all trades would negate these advantages and return trading to once again being an equitable, free and open market-based system.

Abstract Five free-living women (ages 23-38 years) who consumed a self-selected diet and five women (ages 23-44 years) residing in a metabolic unit who were fed constant diet were assessed for variation in vitamin and general chemistry indices. Blood was drawn from these women once a month for five months, once a week for five weeks, and once a day for five days to assess analytical and biological variability of the indices. Analytical variability was determined by concurrently analyzing control samples prepared from plasma and serum pools. All samples were analyzed in duplicate. Of the measured indices, vitamins and lipids seemed to be the most variable. Diet had a significant effect only on ascorbic acid. We were unable to show any seasonal change for these analytes. Estimations of analytical variability, along with estimates of biological variability, and knowledge of dietary practices are essential when interpreting differences in analytes.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractDoes foreign direct investment (FDI) promote or hinder good governance in a host state? In this article, I analyze the effects of FDI on subnational-level corruption across 63 provinces in Vietnam and find that FDI has both promoted and hindered control of corruption. Initially, FDI creates resources and incentives to improve governance and reduce corruption for early winner provinces. Yet, once FDI begins to pour in, different dynamics start to take effect. While the resources and incentives accrued to FDI-recipient provinces become less effective in further curbing corruption as more FDI flows in, FDI provides leaders of those provinces with growing opportunities and increased abilities to seek and pursue rents, leading to a prevalence of corruption. Using both qualitative and quantitative data, I find strong evidence that the control of corruption is weakest at the extremes: in provinces with the least and the most FDI.

Abstract (sommario):

Aim: The Caucasus is considered as a possible primary centre of origin of grapevine. The aim of our research work was to study genetic diversity among cultivated Caucasian grape varieties and wild relatives originating from Near-Caspian areas of Azerbaijan on the basis of simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers.

Methods and Results: Microsatellite allele data obtained in 31 local table grape varieties of Vitis vinifera L. ssp. sativa (Absheron region) and 34 wild varieties of Vitis vinifera L. ssp. sylvestris (Nabran, Davachi and Guba regions) were used to estimate population genetic parameters such as the polymorphism information content (PIC), the probability of identity (PI) and the frequency of null alleles (r). The genetic differences among the wild populations and between the wild and the cultivated gene pools were assessed using POPGENE, Arlequin and GENETIX programs. The selected fifteen microsatellite (SSR) markers revealed a high degree of polymorphism within and among the grape populations analyzed. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. A review is given about follicular populations and aspects of follicular development in cattle. Ovaries of cattle contain two different pools of follicles, the non-growing pool and the growing pool. Entry of primordial follicles into the growth phase occurs throughout the reproductive life. Once follicles are recruited to grow, they are destined to undergo atresia or ovulation. Growth of obligatory gonadotropin-dependent follicles occurs in a wave like pattern. The growth waves are characterised by the processes of recruitment, selection and dominance. The known mechanisms responsible for these three processes are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
The main slogan of the Conservative Party during the 1997 general election campaign has been ‘Britain is booming: don't let Labour blow it’. In our analysis of the UK economy, we discuss the extent to which Britain is indeed booming and how we expect it to develop once the election is over. Given their lead in the opinion polls, we have assumed that Labour will win the election and have built some of their policies into the forecast. This therefore provides some means of assessing whether Labour will ‘blow it’, although this will obviously depend on how they actually behave in office.

Abstract (sommario):
A study was conducted in four streams in the same watershed in New York to determine whether the benthic invertebrate community structure varied among streams with different temporal flow regimes. Timed kick samples were taken from 13 riffles and 4 pools once a month from June to November 1982. Riffle sites were classified according to temporal flow regime as permanent, intermittent (dry for less than 3 months), or dry (dry for over 3 months), and varied in size as a function of discharge. Ordination analysis (detrended correspondence analysis) showed that the structure of the benthic invertebrate communities in these streams was related not only to riffle permanence, but also to other abiotic and biotic parameters. Differences in community structure were greater between adjacent pools and riffles than between temporary and permanent riffles. Stream size, seasonal changes in taxa, how recently the riffle had dried, and the length of the dry period contributed to differences in community structure among riffles. It appears that differences in community structure between permanent and temporary riffles are minimized by generalized adaptations of stream benthos, such as high rates of migration, drought-resistant eggs, and the tendency to take refuge in the hyporheic zone.

Abstract (sommario):
Blood samples were collected regularly from two sentinel herds of cattle in northern and southern Queensland between 1979 and 1985. From 2660 samples, virus isolation attempts using baby hamster kidney (BHK21) and Aedes albopictus (AA) tissue cultures and suckling mice produced 308 viruses of which 243 (79%) were in the Palyam subgroup of orbiviruses. Mosquitoes and biting midges were collected at the southern sentinel herd site in January-February 1984 and processed for virus isolation in BHK2l and AA tissue cultures and by intrathoracic inoculation of Ae. aegypti mosquitoes. Totals of 14 338 midges of four species in 156 pools, and 9030 mosquitoes of 27 species in 232 pools, were processed and yielded 59 isolations. Of the 35 viruses isolated from Culicoides brevitarsis, 17 were members of the Palyam subgroup. Bovine ephemeral fever (BEF) virus was isolated once from Anopheles bancroftii, once from C. brevitarsis and 17 times from cattle. Akabane virus was isolated for the first time from C. wadai, as well as a further 10 times from C. brevitarsis and 20 times from cattle. Other viruses isolated from cattle included bluetongue serotype 1, and serotypes 5, 6 and 7 of epizootic hemorrhagic disease of deer (EHD). A new BEF group virus, tentatively called Oak Vale, was isolated nine times from Culex edwardsi mosquitoes. Of the orbiviruses, those in the Palyam subgroup were isolated almost exclusively in BHK2l tissue cultures but those in the bluetongue and EHD subgroups were isolated almost exclusively in AA cell cultures or after passage through Ae. aegypti. Of 22 rhabdovirus isolations from blood and insects (BEF, Kimberley and Tibrogargan), 16 were made only in AA cell cultures or after passage through Ae. aegypti.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Five free-living women (ages 28-38 y) and five women (ages 23-44 y) residing in a metabolic unit and eating a constant diet were assessed for variation in indices related to mineral nutrition. Blood was sampled once a month for five months, once a week for five weeks, and once a day for five days to assess analytical and biological variability. Analytical variability was determined by using concurrently run duplicate control samples prepared from plasma or serum pools. Of the measured indices, serum ferritin varied most, with intra-individual variance of 4.72% to 18.0%. Much of this variance may have been because of changes in iron status or in the analytical technique used. Intra-individual month-to-month variance for other indices ranged from 17% for superoxide dismutase (EC 1.15.1.1) to 1.5% for calcium. Correction for long-term analytical variation indicated that most of the variance was associated with the biological component. The higher biological variabilities of some indices, including ferritin or superoxide dismutase, need to be considered when nutritional status is being evaluated or when serial observations are made over a protracted period in clinical studies or trials.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This article presents the results of our study on the public perception of science during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, carried out at the Centro de Estudos SoU_Ciência, from Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP). To answer the question: “Has the COVID-19 pandemic changed the perception of Brazilian society about science, scientists, and universities?”, quantitative and qualitative studies were conducted between August 2021 and July 2022. In national quantitative public opinion surveys, we collected exclusive data from a historical series of polls on the subject in Brazil, and in focus groups, we deepened studies on the perception and political position of different social segments. Amid the growth of scientific denialism; political and social setbacks; and the dismantling of public policies, specifically scientific and technological, resulting from the impeachment of 2016 and the election of Bolsonaro in 2018, research indicates, apparently contrary to an obscurantist political tendency, a significant expansion of public interest in science during the pandemic in the country. This paper analyzes the emergence of a “pro-science wave” in public opinion in Brazil, the factors that led to its emergence during the pandemic, and its current prospects.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. River restoration design methods are incrementally improved by studying and learning from monitoring data in previous projects. In this paper, we report post-restoration monitoring data for a Natural Channel Design (NCD) restoration project along 1600 m (10 channel wavelengths) of the Batavia Kill in the Catskill Mountains, NY, implemented in 2001 and 2002. The NCD project used a reference-reach to determine channel form, empirical relations between the project site and reference site bankfull dimensions to size channel geometry, and hydraulic and sediment computations to test channel capacity and sediment stability. In addition 12 cross-vanes and 48 j-hook vanes used in NCD for river training were installed to protect against bank erosion and maintain scour pools for fish habitat. Changes in pool depths were monitored with surveys from 2002–2004, and then after the channel-altering April 2005 flood. Aggradation in pools was attributed to cross-vane arms not concentrating flow in the center of the channel, which subsequently caused flow splitting and 4 partial point bar avulsions during the 2005 flood. Hydrodynamic simulation at the 18 m3s−1 bankfull flow suggested avulsions occurred where vanes allowed erosive bank scour to initiate the avulsion cut, and once the flow was split, the diminished in-channel flow caused more aggradation in the pools. In this project post-restoration monitoring had detected aggradation and considered it a problem. The lesson for the larger river restoration community is monitoring protocol should include complementary hydraulic and sediment analysis to comprehend potential consequences and develop preventative maintenance. River restoration and monitoring teams should be trained in robust hydraulic and sediment analytical methods that help them extend project restoration goals.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Bovine adrenocortical cells from the zona fasciculata/reticularis were isolated and their phosphoinositides labelled to a steady state with [3H]inositol in primary culture. Experiments performed on these cells in the presence of Li+ have shown that, over a period of 60min, angiotensin II (AII; 10−7m) stimulated a linear increase in [3H] inositol phosphates that was sustained through the utilization of two hormone-sensitive subpools of prelabelled lipid (30% and 45% respectively), and a rapid resynthesis of [3H]phosphoinositide into one of these pools using cytosolic [3H]inositol. The 30% pool was used immediately on stimulation, and was sustained at a steady-state size of 10–15% during the first 30 min of stimulation through rapid resynthesis using cytosolic [3H]inositol. Only after 30min, when the cytosolic [3H]inositol was depleted and resynthesis could no longer occur, did the additional 45% pool start to supply further substrate to the phospholipase C, thereby further sustaining the generation of [3H]inositol phosphates. Once this pool was depleted however (by approximately 60min), [3H]inositol phosphate generation finally ceased. These findings establish the differential use of two metabolically distinct hormone-sensitive pools of phosphoinositide following AII stimulation in bovine adrenocortical cells, events which are dependent upon the availability of cytosolic inositol for phosphoinositide resynthesis.

Abstract (sommario):
This article develops a forecasting model of seat shares in the House of Commons applied to general election outcomes. The model utilises past information about party seat shares, together with data from the polls gathered prior to the election, to forecast the number of seats won by the parties. Once it has been estimated the model will be used to make a forecast of the outcome of a possible general election in May 2005. The article starts by focusing on research into translating votes into seats, or the cube rule and its modifications. It then goes on to develop the forecasting model, which is based on electoral and poll data from 1945 to 2001.

Abstract (sommario):
Public health law courses typically focus a good deal of attention on two related topics: the duty of government agencies to control the spread of communicable diseases and their use of the police power to do so. While governments sometimes take forceful actions in responding to disease outbreaks, they can also act to prevent their occurrence. Indeed, one of the great triumphs of public health in the 20th century was the development of vaccines and their widespread use, which seemed on course to relegate many formerly crippling or deadly diseases to the history books. Particular success occurred with vaccinations against childhood diseases such as polio, smallpox, and measles, outbreaks of which once routinely closed schoolrooms, playgrounds, and community swimming pools. By the last quarter of the century, completion of an elaborate schedule of immunizations was not merely the standard in pediatric practice but an official requirement for school enrollment. As a result, the range of communicable diseases that had once terrified parents had become threats to be feared only in memory.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The effect of time after feeding on the distribution of nitrogen (N) in digesta from various segments of the gastrointestinal tract was studied in sheep given a diet of chopped hay once daily. Four groups of four animals were slaughtered at 2, 8,16 and 24 h after feeding and digesta were separated into large (>1180μm), medium (300 to 1180 μm) small (45 to 300 μm) and fine particles and liquid (<45 μm) fractions. The N pool in the reticulorumen decreased with time after feeding but post-ruminal N pools changed very little. Changes in N distribution within the reticulorumen reflected reductions in large particles and increases in fine particles and liquid fractions, the intermediate fractions remaining fairly constant.

Abstract (sommario):
58 patients with ischemic stroke were examined (29 young people — the main group and 29 middle-aged people — control group). Among the examined young patients, cardio embolic subtype of stroke prevailed (66 %), and among middle-aged patients was observed in 10 %. The athe rothrombotic subtype of stroke prevailed in middle-aged people (69 %), and among young people — 24 %. The lacunar subtype of stroke in young people was 3 %, and in middle-aged people — 21 %. Patients of young had such subtypes of strokes as hemodyna mic and hemorheological, which respectively equaled 3 %. In middle age these subtypes of strokes were not observed among the examined patients. In young people the proportion of vascular pools with ische mic stroke was: vertebrobasilar — 41 %, carotid prevailed to some extend — 59 %. In middle-aged people the proportion of strokes prevailed in the carotid pool — 64 %, in the vertebrobasilar it was 29 %. Middle-aged people also had a “combined stroke” (stroke that occurred in several pools at once), it amounted to 7 %. As a result, Doppler study of cerebral vessels proved that in young people linear velocity in the right middle cerebral artery was authentically higher compared with middle-aged patients. At the same time, the linear velocity in middle-aged patients was statistically greater in the left vertebral artery. Keywords: ischemic stroke subtypes, young age, hemodynamic parameters

Abstract (sommario):
Isolates of Colletotrichum lindemuthianum (138 total) from Argentina, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico, and the United States were characterized into 41 races based on virulence to 12 differential cultivars of Phaseolus vulgaris. These 41 races were categorized into two groups: those found over a wide geographic area and those restricted to a single country. Races 7, 65, and 73 were widespread. Race 73 was the most common (28%). Race 7 was found once in Argentina and Mexico but at a higher frequency in the United States. Race 65 was found repeatedly in Brazil and the United States. Although 39% of the races were detected repeatedly and three races were widespread, no race was isolated from both P. vulgaris gene pools. Phenetic analyses showed no obvious patterns correlated with virulence clusters. No geographic pattern was evident. Molecular polymorphism generated by random amplified polymorphic DNA confirmed the extensive variability in virulence of C. lindemuthianum. Virulence phenotypes were grouped into 15 clusters. The two largest clusters contained isolates from all the geographic regions sampled. Molecular polymorphism was observed among isolates from races 65 and 73 within and among countries, except among Bra-zilian isolates of race 65. The genetic diversity of C. lindemuthianum was greatest in Mexico and Honduras. Our data suggest that C. lindemuthianum may not be highly structured to specific Phaseolus gene pools.

Abstract (sommario):
Climate is arguably one of the most important factors determining the quality of wine from any given grapevine variety. This study focuses on climate impacts on vines in the upper Douro Valley, which is one of the most important viticultural regions of northern Portugal. Two different phenomena are studied: cold air pooling and unprecedented rainfall totals. Cold-air pools can have several different impacts on viticulture, including timing of budbreak, final grape quality and yields. Cold pools were studied using high time resolution data from two weather stations located in the upper Douro valley. High rainfall during late spring (April to June) can promote growth of the vines but increases the risk of fungal disease. High rainfall during harvest time (August to October) also bears the potential for severe operational disruption and heavy economic losses. The probability of unprecedented rainfall totals in spring and the harvest season over wine-growing regions of northern Portugal has been assessed using an ensemble of decadal hindcasts and three different gridded precipitation datasets. The probability of a precipitation event with unprecedented totals was low (less than 0.04), although such an event would be highly damaging to the vines. A year similar to 1993, when both seasons were exceptionally wet, would be expected to occur, on average, just once in the next 70-80 years in the current climate.

Abstract (sommario):
Thepurpose of political marketing research is to measure the electoral sentiments of voters, which are formed in the process of using various tools of influence. Critical from the ethical point of view of conducting marketing research in the political marketis their use as a tool to influence the consciousness and electoral mood of voters. Under the current conditions of marketing development, researching the needs of consumers, competitors, and macroenvironmental factors is extremely important for further planning of the company's activities. Marketing research, in addition to the fact that it should help in making effective management decisions, can be used by unscrupulous customers for various manipulations. For example, in the conditions of the industrialgoods market, such manipulations are practically unreal, because each of the participants systematically makes purchasing decisions and is very well acquainted with both the market participants and the technical and functional characteristics of the goodsthat are the subject of procurement. In the political market, the "purchase of goods" is carried out regularly, but with large time intervals (once every 4 or 5 years), which, given the unformed political culture, creates extremely favorable conditions for the use of various manipulations and technologies to influence the voter (consumer of political goods). The main methods of the conducted research are the analysis, generalization and processing of information obtained as a result of sociological research conducted by the Batkivshchyna party, the sociological company Rating, the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, and the Razumkov Center. The method of correlation analysis was also used to identify the relationship between the poll results and the actual voting results. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the use of manipulative technologies in the process of conducting marketing political research in the conditions of the pre-election process is ineffective and difficult to predict from the point of view of the final result. Thus, it can be argued that the Ukrainian voter is influenced by a complex of marketing and technological means and techniques, and individual efforts do not bring the desired result

Animal production output has suffered significantly due to climate change, necessitating thorough research on breed-specific adaptive mechanism, particularly for goats, in order to better understand these animals’ tolerance level. The comparative physiological adaptation of the West African Dwarf (WAD) goat indigenous to the humid climate of West Africa and the Kalahari Red (KR) goat introduced to the humid zone of Southwestern Nigeria from the semi-arid sub-tropical zone of South Africa was investigated. Fourteen goats consisting of seven WAD and seven KR aged between 2 and 4 years were housed in a well ventilated concrete-floored pen. The animals were zero-grazed and fed concentrate and Bracharia decumbens hay for six months consisting of two seasons; cold-dry season (November – January) and hot dry season (February – April). Rectal temperature, respiratory rate, heart rate and pulse rate were monitored twice daily once a week. Kalahari Red goats had significantly higher (p<0.001) rectal temperature (38.97 vs. 38.39o C), respiratory rate (51.20 vs. 47.98 breaths / min) and pulse rate (61.56 vs. 60.22 pulses / min) than WAD goats while heart rate was similar (p<0.05) in the two breeds. Rectal temperature, respiratory rate and pulse rate were lower in both breeds in the cold dry season than in the hot dry season. All the physiological parameters measured in this experiment were significantly (p<0.001) affected by time of day and week of sampling. Rectal temperature, respiratory rate, heart rate and pulse rate were all higher in the afternoon than in the morning while the highest values were recorded in the 20th, 22nd, 23rd and 3rd week of sampling, respectively. Rectal temperature, respiratory rate and pulse rate were lower in both breeds in the cold dry season than in the hot dry season. The study concluded that rectal temperature, respiratory rate and pulse rate were all higher in the Kalahari Red than the West African Dwarf goats. Though the adaptive physiological responses of both breeds to the humid tropical climate appeared to be adequate, however, the West African Dwarf goat appeared to cope better in the hot-dry season while the Kalahari Red goat appeared to cope better in the cold-dry season.

Abstract (sommario):
This article is about the importance of sanitary and hygienic examination of water complexes, in particular, swimming pools and water parks. There is an increasing demand for visiting such water complexes in Ukraine, both for sports activities and for leisure activities. The focus of this article is on the sanitary and hygienic examination and survey of pool water, which is treated with sodium hypochlorite (obtained by chemical way). Material and methods. The studies were carried out for 10 weeks, including a series of water samples, which were taken during the quarantine period, when swimmers were prohibited from visiting the pool. This situation made possible to make a comparative hygienic assessment of the effect of workload on the water condition in the pool and the effectiveness of disinfection. There was also a short review and characteristics of hypochlorite A, which was obtained in chemical way, its advantages and disadvantages as a disinfectant. The article analyzes the data obtained during the sanitary and hygienic survey of the pool of the swimming pool of the national technical university, their statistical processing, and comparison with the current regulatory documents of Ukraine and some other states. The data obtained in the course of a series of studies indicated a significant human influence on the state of water in the pool, which once again indicates the importance of health education of the population and visitors in swimming pools and water parks, in particular, the need to take a shower before swimming, after using the toilet, etc.; the need for training the right culture of visiting different water objects. Particular attention should be paid to swimming pools frequented by children, as they often do not have sufficient hygiene skills, or due to age cannot constantly monitor urination, so, as a rule, it`s an acute issue of large amounts of chloramines in swimming pools for children. Conclusion. In particular, a statistically significant difference was obtained in terms of ammonia and ammonium ions (in total), which indicated a significant influence of visitors on this parameter. And, as you know, organic impurities (sweat, urine, cosmetics remains etc.) that get into the water together with the swimmers, react with chlorine and form chloramines, which can negatively affect the health of both the visitors and the staff. This must be taken into account while changing the workload on the pool and choosing the dose of disinfectant

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractWhile scholars have known about the earliest ritual immersion pool in the Buried Palace at Jericho for more than thirty years, they have yet to produce a clear understanding of why the Hasmoneans began building ritual immersion pools when they did. Further, scholars have also failed to acknowledge the innovative nature of these spaces. I argue that we can best resolve these shortcomings by understanding the construction of the earliest known purpose-built ritual immersion pool (PBRIP) by John Hyrcanus I as an innovation driven by the political and social disruptions of the late second century BCE, and that once he had pioneered the idea of a PBRIP that it rapidly gained popularity. This article contextualizes the PRBIPs within the framework of Hellenistic palatial architecture and Second Temple literature rather than rabbinic literature.

Abstract (sommario):
Experimental colibacillosis was produced in 40 healthy, 7-day-old broiler chickens and turkeys by intratracheal injection of 1 × 108 CFU/chick and 1.23 × 109 CFU/poult bacteria of an O1:F11 strain of Escherichia coli, respectively. Two days before E. coli challenge all chicks were vaccinated with a live attenuated strain of infectious bronchitis virus (H-52). This model of infection - at least in chicken - proved to be useful for evaluating the efficacy of antimicrobial medication, by recording mortality, body weight gain, pathological alterations and frequency of reisolation of E. coli. Using this model, the efficacy of two different dosing methods of norfloxacin (continuous and pulse dosing) was evaluated. The once-per-day pulse dosing of norfloxacin administered via the drinking water at 15 mg/kg body weight proved to be more efficacious than the continuous dosing method of 100 mg/L for 5 days in chickens, while there were no convincing differences between the two treatment regimens in turkeys. The results confirmed earlier observations on the pharmacokinetic properties of norfloxacin in chicks and turkeys (Laczay et al., 1998).

Abstract (sommario):
Responses of the Antarctic limpet Nacella concinna (Mollusca: Gastropoda) to meltwater exposure were studied at Adelaide Island (67°34′S 68°08′W). Limpets in crevices could be bathed in pure meltwater, though animals in large pools often avoided significant exposure to lowered salinity because of marked halocline formation. Small pools containing limpets showed extremely demanding osmotic environments with fluctuations between salinities of 3 and 30 psu being recorded within 1–2 min because of alternating meltwater and wave action. Analysis of haemolymph osmolarities in animals taken from the field demonstrated significant falls in osmolality (to 600–800 mOsm kg−1) compared with control animals living in seawater (1000 mOsm kg−1). A few moribund animals had osmolarities <600 mOsm kg−1. Nacella concinna are stenohaline osmoconformers with a median lower lethal salinity (96 h) of 20·9 psu and a median lethal time for freshwater exposure of 2 h 18 min. A 1 h exposure to freshwater caused a 14% increase in body volume and a 27% loss of body fluid ions. Nacella concinna responds behaviourally to meltwater by short-term, ineffective, clamp down of the shell, retraction of the head, cephalic tentacles and mantle margin tentacles. On vertical surfaces limpets respond actively to freshwater exposure by rapid detachment; 50% of animals lose adhesion within 5 min. Consideration of tidal regimes at Adelaide Island suggests that an individual intertidal limpet has a risk of being exposed to severe meltwater exposure about once per year.
