Abstract (sommario):
Purpose: to evaluate a new single-electron contrast agent for Overhauser-enhanced MR imaging. the contrast agents that are currently available give enhancement factors that are too low to make the technique a valid option for routine clinical use Material and Methods: MR images were generated directly following the injection of the substance into rats. the MR scanner was operated at a main magnetic field of 0.01 T and equipped with a separate rf-transmitter tuned to the electron paramagnetic resonance frequency of the contrast agent Results: as expected, the images generated show a high level of enhancement in areas where the contrast agent was present, and a maximum enhancement of 60 times the normal proton signal was obtained in the vascular area. the signal-to-noise ratios in the images were superior to those previously attained Conclusion: the new contrast agent makes it possible to generate MR images with both morphological and functional information at 0.01 T. the signal-to-noise ratios found in the generated images were of the same order as, or better than, those obtained with the standard clinical routine

Abstract (sommario):
Hypothesizing that Jehu was a scion of the royal family founded by Omri, as the inscriptions of Shalmaneser of Assyria suggest, this article aims at clarifying the way the ancient sources referring to Jehu's coup present the accompanying bloodshed as affecting ‘the House of Ahab’ alone. Jehu's identification as Ahab's kinsman clarifies the positions he held under the Ahabites—bodyguard and general—presupposing royal personal trust. Jehu's status as an Omride may explain his decision to leave Jezreel, the capital of the Ahabites, not to establish a new capital, but to rule from Samaria, the capital founded by Omri, who is suggested to have been their common forefather.

Abstract (sommario):
The local guava (Psidium guajava) variety cultivated in Israel, named Ben Dov, emits a strong odor and suffers from a short postharvest life. To address these problems, we initiated a guava breeding program, and identified two new varieties, the pink-flesh King and the white/yellowish-flesh Omri, that have much better storage lives and emit fewer odors. Physiological characterization of their ripening process revealed that the traditional variety Ben Dov exhibited a classic climacteric behavior, whereas the new variety King had a suppressed-climacteric phenotype, and Omri was apparently nonclimacteric and did not exhibit any increases in respiration and ethylene production rates during ripening. Furthermore, differing concentrations of the ethylene action inhibitor 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) were required to inhibit ripening in the various varieties: a high 1-MCP concentration of 500 nL·L−1 was required to delay ripening and to prolong postharvest storage life of the climacteric variety Ben Dov; a moderate concentration of 250 nL·L−1 inhibited ripening of the suppressed-climacteric variety King; and a low concentration of just 100 nL·L−1 was sufficient to inhibit ripening of the nonclimacteric variety Omri. The results of this study indicate that different guava varieties may pursue distinctive climacteric behaviors: the suppressed-climacteric variety and, to a greater extent, the nonclimacteric variety, have longer storage lives and are more sensitive to 1-MCP than the traditional variety.

Abstract (sommario):
Kentucky reported a solid 13.1% growth in certified organic land from 1997 to 2002. The relative lack of research on disease management practices in Kentucky consistent with organic regulations is an issue that needs to be addressed to provide more reliable information to local farmers. Thus, the first objective of this research was to investigate the potential disease control obtained with natural, organically certifiable spray materials against Colletotrichum orbiculare in vitro and in vivo. The second objective was to test certifiable spray materials in combinations to identify synergistic interactions. The third objective was to evaluate Organic Material Review Institute (OMRI)-certified materials for managing Septoria leaf spot and early blight in tomato under field conditions. The fourth objective was to evaluate chitosan-based products against C. orbiculare in vitro and in vivo. Essential oils, Trilogy®, and Actinovate®, failed to suppress C. orbiculare in vitro as well as cucurbit anthracnose. Bicarbonate salts, Regalia®SC, Sonata®, copper based-products, lime sulfur and water-soluble chitosan showed high antifungal activity in vitro. Bicarbonate salts, Sonata®, Serenade Max®, Soil Gard 12G®, copper based-products and lime sulfur reduced anthracnose disease severity in vivo. In the synergism experiments only a limited number of mixtures showed synergistic interactions, but even in those cases, the effect was not consistent between experiments. The main response obtained was antagonism. In field experiments the most effective fungicides for managing Septoria leaf spot and early blight of tomato were copper-based fungicides. None of the biological-based products (Sonata® and Serenade Max®)), plant-based extracts (Trilogy® and Regalia® SC), chitosan, ammonium bicarbonate nor horticultural lime sulfur provided a significant reduction in disease severity. For the fourth objective, water-soluble chitosan with a molecular weight between 3 to 10 kDa (80 and 85% deacetylated) showed the highest antifungal activity among all chitosan-based products evaluated in vitro. Also, combining the in vitro and in vivo results suggest that the antifungal activity of chitosan-based products is molecular weight- and concentration-dependent. These results provide a significant advance in the evaluation of the efficacy of OMRI-certified materials and natural materials to help organic farmers in Kentucky and the USA to manage diseases.

Abstract (sommario):
This work presents the synthesis of new radical probes to investigate enzymatic activity. Those probes, named “shifting nitroxides”, are synthesized to develop new methods for the detection of enzymatic activity using EPR, but also for an application in diagnosis by OMRI. The shifing nitroxides could then be an efficient alternative to the gadolinium based contrast agents. The first part focused on the optimization of the synthesis of the free shifting nitroxyde, a key synthetic intermediate. The yield has been improved from 2 to 13 % over ten synthetic steps. The second part is devoted to the synthesis of several nitroxides based probes from the free shifting nitroxide. Thus, this manuscript describes the synthesis of nitroxydes suitable for the detection of lipases by EPR spectroscopy. Other probes have been synthesized for the early detection of pulmonary inflammations: one is currently used for the development of earth’s magnetic field MRI, and the other has been used to develop the first example of in vivo detection of a disease by OMRI. Finally, the synthesis of the first family of shifting nitroxydes recognized by UPA is also described. These probes are then promising for the early diagnosis of cancers using OMRI

Abstract (sommario):
The CsgD protein is the master regulator of a pathway leading to the formation of curli, in essence regulating the switch between a motile and a sessile lifestyle for bacteria. The 5’-UTR region of the csgD mRNA is a hotspot for multiple regulatory small RNAs (sRNA) involved in a complex regulatory network. Even though it is previously known how the interaction takes place it is unknown how sRNA binding affects the translational activity. In order to suggest a mode of regulation a mutational assay was performed by making changes in the csgD 5’-UTR and investigate what the translational effects were. Mutations in different regions are shown to affect the translation levels in various ways.

Abstract (sommario):
This project is about building a three wheeled robot car with Omni wheels. Omni wheels can make a robot drive sideways without rotating first. They can make a robot rotate at the same time as it goes straight ahead. An Omni wheel robot can for example be good choice for a tracking robot, though it can drive more effective than a robot car with regular wheels. The thing that speaks against Omni wheels is that it has more friction and it takes more power to rotate the wheels. This robot car is an obstacles avoiding robot that should with help of Ultrasonic sensors and IR-sensors be able to drive around in a room without crashing in to objects or walls. With the help of Omni wheels the robot should drive without rotating much which makes it more effective than a robot car with regular wheels.

Abstract (sommario):
This work relates the continuity and advances in the implementation of the Overhauser-enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging technique on a 0.2 T scanner. Briefly, OMRI technique is based on polarization transfer of saturated electronic spins from free nitroxide radicals to proton spins of surrounding water molecules in the aim to drastically enhance proton NMR signal. To this technique, our research team has merged specific strategies for proteolytic activity detection. The first strategy relies on a 3D visualization of proteolytic activity happening in intact living cells or in vivo in healthy mice. With an Overhauser switch based upon changes in molecular tumbling time, high Overhauser enhancements of 10-fold were observed in the intestinal tract of mice after that elastolytic activity of our probe: the nitroxide-labeled elastin macromolecule took place. In addition, MRI developments - TrueFISP sequence implementation, undersampling Keyhole method and data reconstruction were carried out for imaging these rapid biological processes. A second exquisite strategy is also described using nitroxides with shifting resonant peaks. Here, a Beta-phosphorylated nitroxide molecule was specifically detected at two distinct frequencies: one for its substrate and the other for its product once hydrolysis took place. This hydrolysis was imaged in 3D in the stomach of living mice with Overhauser enhancements of more than 400% and with a good spatiotemporal resolution. The perspectives of this work lie on a future detection of a pathological proteolytic activity in vivo and eventually and development of very low magnetic field OMRI

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of the Open Mobile Service Interface (OMSI) is to simplify the device management process for mobile devices from different manufacturers with a single PC application, instead of using one unique application for every manufacturer. The different OMSI use cases include device management for application vendors, points-of-sale, repair centers or for self-service. This will lead to higher service level for end users, faster repair times, better control over service transactions, an open market for compatible applications and an easy plug-and-play installation. Manufacturers are currently in the process of developing their own specific modules and there is an increasing need for test and verification software to certify OMSI conformance. In order for phone manufacturers to be able to efficiently verify that their OMSI modules and catalogs support and comply with the OMSI standard, there is a need for automated module tests and manual catalog tests. Development of such tests is the main purpose of this Master thesis work. The implementation of the different verification processes have been divided into different sub-projects to create a more structured view of the OMSI Test Suite project and easier management. The first part of the thesis work deals with the module verification process, second part with the client verification process while the third and final part deals with the catalog verification process. The thesis work has been performed in a project form, where the development of the project plan was a part of the thesis work. The final version of the Module Interface Verifier was implemented in C#, in a Visual Studio .NET 2003 environment. The software functioned as expected, both towards a sample module and Sony Ericsson’s and Nokia’s respective modules. The Client Interface Verifier was developed in a C++ environment and functioned according to the given specifications. The Catalog Interface Verifier was developed in C# environment, built on an already existing part of the OMSI Implementation Framework.

Abstract (sommario):
Scanning probe microscopy and gradient imaging are two techniques for imaging at sub-wavelength spatial resolution. Gradient imaging in the form of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has so far been demonstrated only in the radio- and microwave frequency domains [1]. An extension of MRI to optical frequencies for imaging (semi-) transparent objects is of interest because an optical photon detection process is inherently more sensitive than magnetic induction detection, potentially leading to increased spatial resolution. Rare-earth ions incorporated into a crystalline host are promising as a prototype system for demonstration of high spatial resolution OMRI.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract A significant fraction of the reservoirs across the world as well as in East & West Malaysia consist of thinly bedded deposits in Fluvial, Deltaic, Deep-water sediments and Channel system. It is estimated that approximately 30-40% of hydrocarbon in place resources are deposited in thin laminated reservoirs that typically laminated formation with sand and shale alternate layers. These thinly bedded reservoirs have lots of hydrocarbon potential which cannot be evaluated by conventional logs, thereby causing underestimation of reserves. This paper presents a new technique to unlock hydrocarbon potential reserves in thinly bedded reservoir using an innovative high-resolution technology (HiRes). The workflow consists of two main steps: first, to create HiRes resistivity log from conventional deep resistivity and high resolution (resistivity image) log, and second, to generate high resolution density and neutron log utilizing HiRes resistivity log created in earlier step. Then standard petrophysical workflow to compute porosity and water-saturation can be continued with developed HiRes resistivity, density, and neutron logs. Currently this workflow has been developed on resistivity image logs, such as Oil Based Mud Imager (OBMI) or Oil Mud Reservoir Imager (OMRI) typically run-in wells drilled with oil-based mud. This new technique was then tested in few wells from different offshore fields having different environment of depositions, in the East and West Malaysia basins. The HiRes technology has been tried on many wells in various Malaysian fields. Those wells were selected based on the available complete well-log suite data including its core data. The outcome processed logs were then verified with the core-laboratory analysis results i.e., with routine core analysis (grain density, porosity, permeability), and with Dean Stark analysis for water saturation. The results showed remarkable results thus proving the robustness of the technology. A non-pay is reinterpreted as pay zone using this technology thus enhance the volume estimation. The HiRes technology provides behind casing perforation opportunity as the new zones could be added which were considered as non-pay by conventional methods. Since HiRes method produces high resolution resistivity, density, and neutron curves, and thereby provides better lithology and bed boundary definition. The HiRes, an innovative in-house technology, not only addresses the problem in thin beds but also provides quantitative petrophysical solution of thinly bedded reservoirs which aligns with the core results. Consequently, HiRes certainly improves the accuracy in the geological interpretation and resulting geological model.

Abstract (sommario):
Spherical mobile robots belong to a class of mobile robots which may have applications ranging from exploration to entertainment. This paper presents our preliminary kinematic study of spherical mobile robots which are driven by an omni-wheel based internal driving unit (IDU). At first, we discuss the conceptual design of spherical mobile robots with an omni-wheel based IDU. Several IDUs are proposed. Then we derive the velocity equation of a spherical mobile robot with an omni-wheel based IDU. Finally, two isotropic configurations of spherical mobile robots with an omni-wheel based IDU are identified. This work lays the foundation for the further investigation on spherical mobile robots with an omni-wheel based IDU.

Abstract (sommario):
The OMNI-Max anchor is a multi-directional, self-inserting, gravity-installed anchor and used as foundation for mooring deep water offshore facilities, including risers and floating structures. The OMNI-Max anchor offers a cost effective anchoring solution with improved reliability in the mooring system. Pullout capacity and keying behavior are two important issues in the design of the OMNI-Max anchor. In this paper, the pullout capacity and the keying process of a vertically installed OMNI-Max anchor embedded in normally consolidated clay were simulated using three dimensional large deformation finite element analysis. In these numerical analyses, 10-node tetrahedral elements were used to predict the collapse loads of undrained geotechnical problems involving material incompressibility. Nodal joint elements were used to simulate the interaction between the anchor and soil. The effect of the loading angle on the keying behavior of the OMNI-Max anchor was considered. The analyses clearly show the two important processes (1) “keying”: the anchor rotates rapidly until reaching the best bearing capacity position; (2) “diving”: the anchor mainly translates with tiny rotation. It agrees well with the keying and diving phenomenon in published model test results.
