Abstract (sommario):
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed attitudes to the educational process around the world, including Ukraine. Considering the importance of the Students Olympiad in computer science (CS) for the formation of future IT professionals in Ukraine, it was necessary to quickly develop appropriate approaches and safe formats for all stages of this Olympiad. Based on a survey of organizers, a review of Olympiads in CS in countries such as Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Armenia, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Croatia, and the Czech Republic was observed, and the format of the World Olympiad in Singapore was analyzed. Based on the analysis conducted and taking into account the importance of strict observance of all competition rules, including integrity and the importance of social contacts of all participants in the Olympic movement, it was decided that only the online format is insufficient and there was developed a safe format for the third and fourth stages of the competition, that includes a combination of in-person, online and mixed formats. Detailed requirements for each of these formats are formulated. Due to a significant increase in the load on the e-olymp server online verification system, the relevant software has been updated. The article provides detailed information on the holding of all four stages of the All-Ukrainian Students Olympiad in CS in a pandemic condition during 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 academic year using established formats and an improved verification system and describes a typical algorithm of the participant's actions. Therefore, new competition rules are detailed and innovative, taking into account unexpected circumstances in the whole world. They were tested and they proved their effectiveness, so they were also used for the finals of the Ukrainian Junior Olympiad in Informatics and the Ukrainian Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics. Since there is uncertainty about the pandemic in Ukraine, the article proposes to apply the proposed rules to hold all future stages of the Olympiad in Informatics during a pandemic at the official level.

Abstract (sommario):
This article argues the cultural programming of the Olympics is an exercise in soft power and it illumina-tes instances of institutional entrepreneurship using London 2012 as a case. Specifically, it reviews and critiques Joseph Nye’s concept using explicit Olympic examples. The article highlights new organizational formats using work by Steve Maguire, Cynthia Hardy and Thomas Lawrence to examine the structure of the London Olympic Organizing Committee, creation of the opening ceremony, and the World Shake-speare Festival. Using case study methodology, it explores how the International Olympic Committee and local organizing committee engaged with institutional entrepreneurship during the London 2012 Olympics to create new structures for the organizing committee and implement the cultural program-ming to exercise soft power. Ultimately, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralym-pic Games’ new, hybrid public-private structure functioned as a resource for the production and imple-mentation of the Games because it impacted autonomy and accountability, which influenced the com-mittee’s ability to exercise soft power. This work emphasizes how institutional entrepreneurship activi-ties occurs within large organizations like the International Olympic Committee highlights how institu-tions consistently change to reflect the needs of stakeholders, but the goals of the Olympic Games re-main the same.

Abstract (sommario):
A maximum amount of media coverage is desirable for every sport to attract potential fans, new active members, and sponsors. The Olympic Games draw large audiences and are therefore a chance for niche sports to enter the big media stage. Large time differences between the hosting city and the audiences’ home countries sometimes limit the amount of live coverage viewers can consume – increasing the importance of summarizing coverage formats like bulletins and news shows. This study analyzes this type of coverage about the Olympic Games 2018 on German TV and tries to find predictors for variances in coverage time, with the help of news values theory. Results show that the success of national athletes is by far the strongest predictor, while simplicity, identification, and surprise play a lesser role and tradition and gender seem to make no significant difference in the amount of summarizing coverage a competition yields.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractResearchers now have the benefit of an unprecedented suite of space- and ground-based sensors that provide multidimensional and multiparameter precipitation information. Motivated by NASA’s Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission and ground validation objectives, the System for Integrating Multiplatform Data to Build the Atmospheric Column (SIMBA) has been developed as a unique multisensor precipitation data fusion tool to unify field observations recorded in a variety of formats and coordinate systems into a common reference frame. Through platform-specific modules, SIMBA processes data from native coordinates and resolutions only to the extent required to set them into a user-defined three-dimensional grid. At present, the system supports several ground-based scanning research radars, NWS NEXRAD radars, profiling Micro Rain Radars (MRRs), multiple disdrometers and rain gauges, soundings, the GPM Microwave Imager and Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar on board the Core Observatory satellite, and Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor system quantitative precipitation estimates. SIMBA generates a new atmospheric column data product that contains a concomitant set of all available data from the supported platforms within the user-specified grid defining the column area in the versatile netCDF format. Key parameters for each data source are preserved as attributes. SIMBA provides a streamlined framework for initial research tasks, facilitating more efficient precipitation science. We demonstrate the utility of SIMBA for investigations, such as assessing spatial precipitation variability at subpixel scales and appraising satellite sensor algorithm representation of vertical precipitation structure for GPM Core Observatory overpass cases collected in the NASA Wallops Precipitation Science Research Facility and the GPM Olympic Mountain Experiment (OLYMPEX) ground validation field campaign in Washington State.

Abstract (sommario):
The urgency of the research problem is due to the official recognition of a new sport -basketball 3x3 as an Olympic sport and a review of theoretical and methodological approaches to the selection and preparation of basketball players to participate in official competitions in 3x3 format. The first official national level competitions are held for players in the U-15 category. Given the lack of a managed training process in the new sport, there was a need for additional training of players in the sections of classical basketball to participate in competitions 3x3.Purpose: to determine the opinion of basketball players aged 15-16 about basketball in 3x3 format. Methods:theoretical (analysis and generalization of scientific and methodological literature, Internet data on the problem of research), empirical (pedagogical (surveys), sociological (questionnaires)).Results: the results of a survey of coaches and a survey of classic players about basketball in 3x3 format are presented. The opinion of the players about the place of the new species, the importance of purposeful preparation for competitions in the 3x3 format is established. Priorities for the use of technical and tactical interactions during competitions in 3x3 format have been identified. The effectiveness of their use in 3x3 basketball in players of this age is analyzed. Conclusions:аmong the vast majority of athletes aged 15-16, training in the sections of classical basketball under the guidance of a coach, 3x3 basketball is very popular and is perceived as a separate sport (70%). 72% of respondents have experience of performing at official competitions in 3x3 format. 85% have a sufficient level of knowledge of the official rules of the new game. Distinguishing between features of competition formats, 87% of respondents expressed the need to train before 3x3 basketball competitions. The opinion of athletes aged 15-16 about the use of tactical interactions during games in 3x3 format partially differs from modern requirements.

Abstract (sommario):
Montreal and Toronto are arguably Canadian arts festival capitals, boasting heady and never-ending streams of performing arts, film, jazz, winter, literary, new music and ethnic festivals and cultural-tourist events. However, it may be instructive to look thousands of kilometres due west to examine the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, located in the booming Pacific Rim and 2010 Olympic host city of Vancouver. Guided by executive director Norman Armour and co-founded with local theatre director Katrina Dunn, “the PuSh Festival engages and enriches audiences with adventurous contemporary performance … work that is visionary, genre-bending, startling, and original” (Press release). The organization’s October 2007 news release (“PuShing beyond the Borders”) and Web-site archives indicate that PuSh has grown exponentially in its six years. It now boasts a history consisting of two initial three-show seasons (2003—4) that morphed into festival formats in the last four years (2005—8), becoming an essential fixture on the Vancouver arts scene.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: The comparison of team sports based on luck has a long tradition and remains unsolved. A contrast between the new Olympic format three-on-three (3 × 3) and five-on-five (5v5) forms of basketball has never been analyzed and provides a comparison within the same form of sports. Methods: We developed a new method to calculate performance indicators for each team and invented the Relative Score Difference Index, a new competitive balance indicator that allows the comparison of luck in the two basketball forms for both men and women. We collected game-level data about 3 × 3 and 5v5 from the World Cups held between 2010 and 2019 (N = 666). Luck was defined as the difference between the expected and the actual outcomes of games. Using the basketball World Cup data, we applied the Surprise Index, ran probit regression models, and compared the basketball forms on the goodness-of-fit of the models. Results: As we predicted, there are differential effects of luck between game formats and sex, such that the 3 × 3 form depends more on luck and women’s games are less influenced by luck when compared to men’s games. Conclusion: Coaches may better understand the differences between the two forms and sexes regarding luck if they are aware that the 3 × 3 and men’s competitions are usually more influenced by luck. The findings provide a leverage point for testing new performances and competition balance indicators and will acknowledge the number of games we enjoy watching.

Abstract (sommario):
Triathlon is characterized by the multidisciplinary nature of the sport where swimming, cycling, and running are completed sequentially in different events, such as the sprint, Olympic, long-distance, and Ironman formats. The large number of training sessions and overall volume undertaken by triathletes to improve fitness and performance can also increase the risk of injury, illness, or excessive fatigue. Short- and medium-term individualized training plans, periodization strategies, and work/rest balance are necessary to minimize interruptions to training due to injury, illness, or maladaptation. Even in the absence of health and wellbeing concerns, it is unclear whether cellular signals triggered by multiple training stimuli that drive training adaptations each day interfere with each other. Distribution of training intensity within and between different sessions is an important aspect of training. Both internal (perceived stress) and external loads (objective metrics) should be considered when monitoring training load. Incorporating strength training to complement the large body of endurance work in triathlon can help avoid overuse injuries. We explore emerging trends and strategies from the latest literature and evidence-based knowledge for improving training readiness and performance during competition in triathlon.

Abstract (sommario):
Almost half of the record 98 events being held at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games were either not held 20 years ago at Lillehammer or have been substantially modified. The Olympics as a global sports event are not stationary but must adapt and evolve in response to changing demands, just as the remarkable athletes who are competing do. While the Winter Olympics program has steadily grown since Chamonix in 1924, the rate of development has greatly accelerated in the last 20 years. Three factors seem to be instrumental. First, the Winter Olympics program has become more gender balanced. Female hockey teams are battling for gold, and this year women will compete in ski jumping for the first time. Most Winter Olympics sports have equal numbers of events for men and women today, although female participation still lags somewhat behind. Second, many traditional events have been modified by sport-governing bodies toward a more “TV friendly” format. Time-trial starts have been replaced by mass or group starts. “Sprint” and team events have been added to spice up traditional sports like cross-country skiing and speed skating. Finally “extreme” sports like half-pipe and ski-cross have crossed over from the X Games to the Olympics, with some arguing that the Olympics need these popular sports more than the X Games sports need the Olympics. All of these changes create new research questions for sport scientists who are also willing to adapt and evolve.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis work revolves around the analysis of inter-individual factors affecting performance and their connection with environmental factors within the context of triathlon, particularly focusing on the triathlon formats featured in the Olympic Games. Performances in triathlon races, where triathletes interact with each other, as seen in the short-distance triathlon formats (super-sprint, sprint, and standard), depend on the optimal utilization of individual capacities and the adaptation of effort to the race dynamics. The discipline of short-distance triathlon has evolved both in terms of regulations and technology over the past two decades. Therefore, the research objective was to understand race dynamics in these short formats based on the profiles of the participating triathletes and to quantify the performance levels of each athlete while taking into account the competition, which is the most consistent parameter across different races. The initial studies (1 and 2) focused on the innovative format of mixed relays introduced in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This ultra-short format involves race dynamics centered around maintaining position and high proximity among athletes. We observed the strategies adopted by teams and identified the profiles of triathletes corresponding to each relay.Subsequently, our research shifted towards the standard format (studies 3 and 4), also featured in the Olympics and compulsory for relay athletes. In these studies, we aimed to estimate the level of each athlete using points exchange system based on the probabilities of victory and defeat between each pair of athletes. This system allowed us to assess the density of competition in a race and the target performance of an athlete. Furthermore, by connecting it to course typology, we were able to observe race group dynamics and estimate the probability of a successful breakaway after the swimming and cycling segments

Abstract (sommario):
Water is an essential element in life, both for its biological properties and its symbolic character, referring to images of hygiene, health and purity in the religious sense. The following work aims to understand the element of water in all its aspects in order to inform the creation of an infrastructure (swimming pools) inserted in the Sports Park of Vale do Jamor. The proposed project is an integral part of a hypothetical infrastructure creation plan for the 2020 Olympic Games. In this way, the development of the architectonic program aims not only to integrate with the existing park, but also with the Tagus river, whose marginal is near. The research seeks to assist and enrich the programmatic choices developed in the project. The final result, that is, the project presented, serves as a “catalog” of possibilities for a relationship between the architectural project and the natural elements.

This article appears in theOxford Handbook of New Audiovisual Aestheticsedited by John Richardson, Claudia Gorbman, and Carol Vernallis. This introduction frames the book by providing an overview of its authors' work and theorizing new audiovisual aesthetics.1 The first section reviews the current state of research on audiovisuality; it considers how the audiovisual landscape has changed and how new research might respond to these changes. The section attends closely to boundaries, as some of the most fundamental changes are occurring between or at the margins of conventional forms and categories. Immersion, participation, and sensory enrichment are among the core issues discussed in this section. The second section illuminates these observations via two case studies, on audiovisuality in the London 2012 Olympic Games and on the Chinese independent filmThe World. The final section describes fifteen key areas in which research on the audiovisual is currently being pursued.

Abstract (sommario):
We are currently facing significant challenges in environmental management that must be addressed to maintain the health of our planet and our population. While carbon offsetting in its various forms is widespread globally, few countries have fully legislated and put into operation other offset policies. This edited collection aims to fill the gap of knowledge on environmental offsets, from theory to practice. Environmental Offsets addresses four major forms of environmental offsets – biodiversity offsets, carbon offsets, offsetting the depletion of non-renewable resources and offsetting the destruction of built heritage. The authors discuss their research and provide case studies from around Australia and across the developing world. Using examples such as the Sydney Olympics, the Bakossi Forest Reserve in Cameroon and green roof gardens, this book highlights the strengths and weaknesses of environmental offsetting and illustrates how jobs can be created in the offsetting process. Environmental Offsets is both a historical source in our understanding of environmental offsetting and a guide to the way forward. It illustrates what works, what does not and what can be improved for the future.

Abstract (sommario):
The master narrative of Cold War sports describes a two-sided surrogate war, measurable by falsely objective medal counts every four years at the Olympic Games. This approach is as inadequate for sports as it is for the Cold War. Rather than a bipolar, superpower conflict, the Cold War was a competition between the dueling globalization projects of capitalism and Communism composed of far-from-monolithic blocs. While a fragile, fearful peace took shape in the Northern Hemisphere, both sides waged proxy wars that killed tens of millions in the Global South. Alongside other forms of popular culture, sports were deployed to win the sympathies of the world’s citizens, many of them from nations that had emerged in the wake of European decolonization. Sport was the most conspicuous form of popular culture in the period. It offered millions around the world the opportunity to forge identities that both supported and undermined dominant ideologies—racial, gender, local, regional, national, and international. Sport crossed rather than created borders and identities—and it did so in myriad and intricate ways. This book brings together experts working on sports in the United States, USSR, German Democratic Republic, Asia, and the postcolonial world. Their work is theoretically aware and underpinned by extensive archival research. Taken together, they go beyond simple notions of bipolarity and present new insights that should invigorate the study of both international systems and of culture in the Cold War period.

Abstract (sommario):
A Cultural History of Sport in Antiquity covers the period 800 BCE to 600 CE. From the founding of the Olympics and Rome’s celebratory games, sport permeated the cultural life of Greco-Roman antiquity almost as it does our own. Gymnasiums, public baths, monumental arenas, and circuses for chariot racing were constructed, and athletic contests proliferated. Sports-themed household objects were very popular, whilst the exploits of individual athletes, gladiators, and charioteers were immortalized in poetry, monuments, and the mosaic floors of the wealthy. This rich sporting culture attests to the importance of leisure among the middle and upper classes of the Greco-Roman world, but by 600 CE rising costs, barbarian invasions, and Christianity had swept it all away. The 6 volume set of the Cultural History of Sport presents the first comprehensive history from classical antiquity to today, covering all forms and aspects of sport and its ever-changing social, cultural, political, and economic context and impact. The themes covered in each volume are the purpose of sport; sporting time and sporting space; products, training, and technology; rules and order; conflict and accommodation; inclusion, exclusion, and segregation; minds, bodies, and identities; representation.

Abstract (sommario):
Although girls and women account for approximately 40 percent of all athletes in the United States, they receive only 4 percent of the total sport media coverage. SportsCenter, ESPN’s flagship program, dedicates less than 2 percent of its airtime to women. Local news networks devote less than 5 percent of their programming to women’s sports. Excluding Sports Illustrated’s annual "Swimsuit Issue," women appear on just 4.9 percent of the magazine’s covers. Media is a powerful indication of the culture surrounding sport in the United States. Why are women underrepresented in sports media? Sports Illustrated journalist Andy Benoit infamously remarked that women’s sports "are not worth watching." Although he later apologized, Benoit’s comment points to more general lack of awareness. Consider, for example, the confusion surrounding Title IX, the U.S. Law that prohibits sex discrimination in any educational program that receives federal financial assistance. Is Title IX to blame when administrators drop men’s athletic programs? Is it lack of interest or lack of opportunity that causes girls and women to participate in sport at lower rates than boys and men? In Women’s Sports, Jaime Schultz tackles these questions, along with many others, to upend the misunderstandings that plague women’s sports. Using historical, contemporary, scholarly, and popular sources, Schultz traces the progress and pitfalls of women’s involvement in sport. In the signature question-and-answer format of the What Everyone Needs to Know® series, this short and accessible book clarifies misconceptions that dog women’s athletics and offers much needed context and history to illuminate the struggles and inequalities sportswomen continue to face. By exploring issues such as gender, sexuality, sex segregation, the Olympic and Paralympic Games, media coverage, and the sport-health connection, Schultz shows why women’s sports are not just worth watching, but worth playing, supporting, and fighting for.

Abstract (sommario):
One of the popular Olympic branches today is taekwondo. Electronic body protection systems (EBP) have undoubtedly contributed greatly to this population growth. The present study aims to review the scientific studies on electronic body protection systems and scoring used in taekwondo. The study is prepared in a compilation format. The journals in Web of Science databases were searched by using the keywords “taekwondo” and “electronic system” and “score” together. While determining the articles, no restrictions such as review, meta-analysis, research article, or year of the research were applied. However, papers were not included in this study. A total of 10 articles that met the specified conditions were analyzed. It can be said that the EBP system increases the transparency in the results of the competitions and the pleasure of watching due to its effects that push the game rules to change.

Abstract (sommario):
This concluding chapter focuses on George Eliot's Middlemarch. The main business of Middlemarch, formulated as the premise of its opening rhetorical question, is with a scientific project, “the history of man.” While George Eliot's literary career coincided with Charles Darwin's, she did not immediately digest his theory; her fiction activates other developmental forces besides natural selection, and deranges the scientific thought it brings into play. In doing so, it churns up the not-yet-settled, volatile currents of that scientific thought-including Darwin's, who was not always (himself) a pure Darwinist. With that, it deranges its own aesthetic protocols, so often read as an Olympian consummation of Victorian realism. “To a degree that the catchall term 'realism' obscures,” writes Lauren Goodlad, “Eliot's oeuvre is generically diverse, bold, and experimental.” The chapter seeks to recapture the unsettling force of that experimentalism: to make George Eliot strange again.

Abstract (sommario):
In the general context of crisis, this work opens a space for rethinking new urban forms and legal instruments. Envisages demonstrating the possibilities of dialogue between Law and Urbanism for the construction of a legal discourse sensitized by the reality and nurtured by other knowledge areas as a way to achieve social efficiency of the law within the meaning of the right to city. Giving new meaning to normative constructions and their effectiveness is one possible alternative witnessed on the great contradictions of this century. The study is developed from an interdisciplinary perspective between Law and Urbanism. The right to the city is presented as the appropriate analytical category since it allows for building a counterpoint between the consensus of city and the current legal approach. Barcelona and its coastal zone have been chosen as a reference case as it features important elements of analysis: “Barcelona model”, Olympic city and its current context of capitalist city of a neoliberal pattern that allows for reflecting about the extremely actual present urban phenomena.
