Abstract (sommario):
Olivier Messiaen's published descriptions of his works and the color labels that appear in certain of his scores show that he is affected by colored-hearing synaesthesia. Because Messiaen's color responses, like those of other synaesthetes, exhibit a high degree of internal consistency, the analyst may tabulate the available correlations between sound and color and use them to explore the various factors, objectively considered, that govern Messiaen's color associations. The importance of absolute pitch and of the modes of limited transposition is studied, as are the conditions under which vertical spacing and pitch-class-set identity may assume primary significance in color delineation. The conclusions reached offer a key to more general matters of structure in Messiaen's music. Examples are drawn from several of Messiaen's works, dating from 1929 to 1974.

Abstract (sommario):
Graham (1968) demonstrated that logs became attractive to ambrosia beetles after the sapwood was subjected to anaerobic conditions. Pursuing this lead, Cade et al. (1970) and Moeck (1970a, 1970b, 1971) extracted, analyzed, and bioassayed anaerobic products from western hemlock and Douglas-fir trees and ascertained that ethanol was the principal “primary attractant” to the ambrosia beetles, Gnathotrichus sulcatus (LeConte) and Trypodendron lineatum (Olivier), respectively. The demonstration that ethanol enhanced the response of the Douglas-fir beetle, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins, to its aggregation pheromones frontalin and seudenol (Pitrnan et al. 1975) suggested that ethanol could also be involved in the primary attraction of or host recognition by bark beetles. We report that the mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, is arrested to ethanol in a laboratorv olfactometer.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract (sommario):
In the wake of the Second World War, the administering Powers came to agree on the necessity of forming a “common front”, notably in Black Africa, to resist the anti-colonial offensive. In the context of this closer alignment, the Commission of Technical Cooperation in Black Africa (CCTA), established by the administering Powers, would play the role of a shield against the interest shown by the United States and the institutions of the UN in Africa. From now on, France and Portugal both took up these different concerns. In the context of the cold war, decolonisation, wars of liberation and European construction which followed, the two nations would become even closer. In pursuing the strategy of politics of national grandeur – which consisted of shattering the structures of the bipolar world – the Portuguese colonial empire was a precious asset. Indeed, Charles de Gaulle and Salazar shared the same reservations about the United States. From this perspective, even if the Suez crisis was a resounding failure for the colonial powers, it was the beginning of a new era in Franco-Portuguese relations. From this point onwards, the Portuguese were conclusively convinced that the United States was not in a position to guarantee the sovereignty of their colonies. At the same time as the policy of self government was described by the Portuguese authorities as that of abandon, French independence from Washington became a decisive factor

Abstract (sommario):
We consider the study of a problematic figure: the criminal or the Nazi executioner in four contemporary novels. The coherence of the corpus retained (La Part de l'autre d'E. Schmitt, Les Bienveillantes de B. Littell, HHhH de L. Binet and La Disparition de Josef Mengele d'O. Guez) is due both to this thematic aspect linked to the representation of a historical reality, but also to the chosen chronological span and the ethical issue that it induces: how can we today «speak» of the executioner, how can we give him the floor, without in any way accrediting the disastrous ideology that he claims to be? To meet this epistemological challenge, we summon the long history by questioning the place and the function of the executioner through the centuries. We then show how the narrative procedures of the novels of his corpus restore the social logics that make possible the emergence of such a figure; far from any psychological complacency for the theme of unfathomable evil, of romantically satanic cruelty or perversity, contemporary writers undertake to deconstruct black legends and mythologies of the curse to highlight the workings of a purely instrumental rationality. The filiation with the theses of Hannah Arendt on the banality of evil and the documented fiction of Robert Merle (Death is my profession, 1952) is in this respect patent. The temporality, the space, the system of the characters converge to place the executioner in an intelligibility that makes understand the facts (including psychic) without justifying them, or reduce them. The last part of the thesis brings the most fundamental piece to the demonstration: against the poorly lit positions of which Charlotte Lacoste is the most eminent representative (Seductions of the executioner. The denial of victims, PUF, 2010), the researcher shows very well how enunciative devices that work a ventriloquist narration, polyphonic (critical narrator, uses of irony) forbid the reader to fall into the trap of Nazi seduction or manipulation. Far from any aestheticization, from any commodification of the horrors of history, the four novels of the corpus constitute effective implementations of a literary anti-seduction

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis traces the construction and evolution of the star text of Laurence Olivier as it relates to cinematic Shakespeare production and formulations of nationhood in 1940s and 1950s Britain. Organised around an examination of Olivier’s four Shakespearean film adaptations (including the unmade Macbeth), the project focuses on the ways in which the concept of 'Shakespeare' – signalled throughout by its italicisation – is appropriated through Olivier’s image in relation to the industrial and cultural contexts of the wartime and post-war British film industry. It also examines articulations of Shakespearean selfhood and related reappropriations of the filmic image in Olivier’s life writing, exploring how Olivier engages with his own star persona. In examining the relationship that exists between broader industrial-cultural appropriations of 'Shakespeare' and a sense of a star’s personal connection with the national poet, the thesis explores (in addition to the film texts) extratextual materials such as fan letters, publicity documents, theatre and film ephemera, magazine interviews, newspaper criticism, industrial reports and personal and professional correspondence in order to interrogate the national-cultural function of a star text whose image is aligned to 'Shakespeare'. This thesis seeks to make an original contribution to Shakespeare on screen studies by constituting the fullest study of Laurence Olivier’s cinematic Shakespearean career to date. In introducing and analysing previously unseen archival material (including screenplays and shooting scripts relating to the unmade Macbeth), the thesis informs our understanding of the evolving history of British Shakespeare production and, therefore, of the history of Shakespeare on screen. Rethinking Olivier’s cultural currency as a Shakespearean star in 2012 and in the space of the archive, the thesis also contributes to the theoretical thinking underpinning Shakespearean performance studies and archival studies. Finally, the thesis opens the way for further considerations as to how (and to what effect) the Shakespearean star operates as a national and transnational phenomenon.

Abstract (sommario):
The objective of this work is to circumscribe an "agencement" (arrangement) of specific art: the exorcism produced on a receiver by musical or poetical works from the Second World War and the immediate after-war period by R. Char, H. Michaux, O. Messiaen et A. Jolivet. When encountering these works, the receiver exorcises the war-related violence by confronting the negation of the other characterising Auschwitz with the advent of another entity rising from the perception conditioned by these works. Such a perceptive "alterisation" rests on a contradictory functioning of perception, which de-constructs itself whilst happening, and which blurs perception. In a first part, we set the theoretical basis for our approach, by encircling the specificity of music and language based on a criticism of association usually made between both of them. We then analyse the mere "agencement" of exorcism by describing its fundamental manifestation - the process of "brouillage" (confusion) - in a second part. We define the semiotic sources for this process which are specific to language and music, as well as its manifestation more distinctively perceptive in both systems, through its power of de-construction and des-involvement. That way, we manage to define the "brouillage" as a monstrous "agencement". The last part of this work is dedicated to the reinsertion of this "agencement" into the more general "agencement" of exorcism. We show how the "brouillage" can change to "alterisation", with the reading of metaphor itself changing into the creation of a hetero-universe of belief, and the paradox into "hetero-dox", when listening operates along benchmarks which are marginal compared to expectations. To conclude, we propose a general modelling of the "agencement" of exorcism as a way of substituting to the other, as a challenge to the violence of History

This present study investigates the journey of the history¿s course, in the period of teacher Yza Fava de Oliveira¿s management. This research gives highlight to the instruments that the course organized to reach its development goals on historic research, patrimony defense and construction of the Baixada Santista¿s knowledge. Among others, Documentation Center, Folk Studies Center, Historical Study Center, Archaeological Research Institute, History Week. Using documentary research served of the main collections of the Department and the support organs. The interviews made with the coordinator were equally important. That was important because it completed some doubts found in the documentary sources and motivated other ways of looking at reality. Besides the written documentation, the iconographic collections of the teacher and Department were important. It was also possible to have a preliminary view of the Course, under the school practices.
Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation is about the poetry and prose, published and unpublished, of the British poet Douglas Dunlop Oliver (1937-2000), written between 1973-1991. It traces the development of Oliver's poetics from his early prose through his later poetry of the 1970s and 1980s. The dissertation makes extensive use of archive material stored in the Douglas Oliver Archive at the Albert Sloman Library, University of Essex, the vast majority of which has thus far received little or no critical commentary or appraisal. Contained in the archive are a set of unpublished essays Oliver wrote as a mature undergraduate at the University of Essex between 1974-1975. In my first chapter, I discuss these essays and examine their philosophical and aesthetic standpoints in order to understand and expand upon Oliver's published claims about the experience of reading poetry in his theoretical monograph Poetry and Narrative in Performance (1989). Oliver's thinking about prosody and poetic language are then discussed in relation to his books of poetry on explicitly political subjects, The Diagram--Poems (1979) and The Infant and the Pearl (1985). My second and third chapters present close readings of Oliver's poetry with a view to understanding and critiquing the political arguments conducted therein. My second chapter, on The Diagram--Poems, adds to the discussion of prosody the historical significance of Oliver's thinking about “stupidity,” and reads the poetry's political intervention in the light of such thinking. My third chapter, on The Infant and the Pearl, reads the poem's critique of the contemporary political landscape with the help of the extensive scholarship on its prototype, the medieval Pearl, in order to explain and critique Oliver's poem's emphasis on national and interpersonal “unity.” The dissertation argues throughout that the inseparability of poetic form and political feeling is at the heart of Oliver's practice as a poet.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis chapter focuses on films produced by the Independent Producers at Pinewood during 1947, a key year in which the film industry was under great pressure to produce more films. It examines in detail the new techniques and approaches to set design in the films Blanche Fury (1948), The End of the River (1947), The Woman in the Hall (1947), Oliver Twist (1948), The Red Shoes (1948), Esther Waters (1948) and London Belongs to Me (1948). Experiments in Technicolor design in particular emerge as an important theme, and also techniques used for films shot primarily on location. The chapter concludes with an overview and assessment of the immediate post-war years when Pinewood supported many productions whose art direction practices and working methods were very much situated in the exigencies of post-war shortages and studio rehabilitation.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The goal of updating methods in dynamic is to improve the finite element models by means of experimental tests. In fact, we try to estimate a better value of the mass (M) and stiffness (K) matrices. Several ways are possible to complete the updating of M and K : - Global techniques which consist to correct the entire matrices without keeping a physical meaning of the M and K modifications. This approach transforms the finite element “knowledge” models into “representation” models which are more accurate in the measured frequency range but don’t represent the actual structure. This kind of method has been developed first by Baruch (1978) and Berman (1979) and improved by lots of researchers (Kabe, 1985 and Wei, 1990). - Local techniques try to compute the best values of the physical parameters defined on each element of the modelling. This method is a very stiff one since the optimization of the numerical modes is required over a very large number of parameters. To be able to use this approach we must select only the elements which must be modified to reduce the size of the optimization problem. To do so, we will apply the localization methods. In this paper we will present two ways to locate the modelling errors as well as a new approach based on thermographic, data. Each localization methods will be tested and we will show the influence of the expansion technique and the improvement due to the use of the static modes. The thermographic measurements give us a large number of data but partial because the information gathered by the camera concernes only the sum of the principal strains (Olivier et al, 1988 and Ryall et al, 1992). But the advantages of this method are the number of points which is important and the nature of the data which is a strain information (very sensitive to the local defaults of modelling).

Abstract (sommario):
There is evidence that some patients with damaged macular vision can improve their visual performance by learning to utilize intact parts of the retina for "eccentric viewing" (Holcomb and Goodrich (1976), Goodrich and Mehr (1986), Carman-Merifield (1990), McMahon, Hansen, Stelmack, Oliver and Viana (1992)). The chance for such improvement varies greatly with the task, e.g. reading, and with the position of the utilized retinal spot relative to the fovea. In order to optimally guide the patient's learning of eccentric viewing, it is necessary to assess residual vision topographically and in a way releveant to practical viewing tasks. We have developed a computerized test that focusses on finding the best "candidate spot(s)" for eccentric viewing, rather than on mapping scotomata. The test is non-invasive, easy to administer and yields results within minutes.

Abstract (sommario):
When is it profitable to screen for amblyopia? In order to answer this question, we must place some values on the various outcomes of screening. What is the value of finding an amblyope at an early age? What is the cost of a false positive, a false negative, or a true negative? Because it is not easy to provide answers to these questions, the method of this paper is to investigate a range of assumptions, the possible values in this pay-off matrix. These are coupled with screening tests of various quality in order to find the minimum prevalence of the disease for which it would be profitable to screen. Indeed, the prevalence of amblyopia is itself unknown, variously estimated at between 0.05 and 0.005 (Ciuffreda et al. 1991; Oliver & Nawratzki, 1971) in normal populations.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

ABSTRACT The design of civil infrastructure requires the assessment of the mechanical properties of rock layers supporting these structures. In this study, a newly installed high-pressure and high-temperature polyaxial equipment at the University of Wyoming is described and used in the mechanical testing. Uniaxial and triaxial compression tests are performed on dry and water-saturated cylindrical sandstone samples obtained from the Hanna Formation, Wyoming. The cylindrical samples are prepared and tested in two different sizes: 1) 25.4 mm diameter by 50.8 mm length, and 2) 76.2 mm diameter by 152.4 mm length. The sandstone samples are vacuum-saturated for 7 and 14 days. For the triaxial compression tests, the samples are subjected to three effective confining pressures of 5, 15 and 25 MPa and under two temperatures of 35 and 55 °C. The results show that the effective confining pressure has a clear positive effect on the compressive strength of all samples. Under the same effective confining pressure, larger samples show higher compressive strength and Young's modulus. For all three effective pressures, the dry samples exhibit higher compressive strengths, Young's modulus and more brittle behavior. Permeability decreases with the confining pressure. P and S wave velocities increase with the confining pressure. INTRODUCTION The design and performance of infrastructures can be highly affected by the strength and deformation of the rocks beneath or around them. Characteristics like rock type, sample size, porosity, water content, and temperature can change the strength and deformability of rocks. Studying the simultaneous effect of the aforementioned characteristics can improve our understanding of rock behavior, which leads to more dependable designs of civil infrastructures. The Hanna Basin is located in southeast Wyoming, bounded by Laramide-aged uplifts (Fig. 1). The formation was formed in the Tertiary period and extends from 0 to 7000 ft below the ground level (Bowen, 1918). A conglomeratic sandstone lays at the base of the formation, with conglomerate, sandstone, shale, and coal beds alternating to the top. In a study (Oliver and Youngberg, 1984) on a unit from the Hanna formation, 72.2% of the rock footage was comprised of Calcareous sandstone. The bulk mineralogy of the Calcareous sandstone was determined as follows: 54% quartz, 9.6% kaolinite, 9% K-Feldspar, 8.4% Dolomite, 6.1% Plagioclase, 5.4% Mica, 3.9% Calcite, 3.4% Siderite, and 0.3% Acmite.

Abstract (sommario):
The goal of Northern Colorado Plateau Network (NCPN) riparian monitoring is to deter-mine long-term trends in hydrologic, geomorphic, and vegetative properties of wadeable streams in the context of changes in other ecological drivers, stressors, and processes. This information is intended to provide early warning of resource degradation and determine natural variability of wadeable streams. This report summarizes NCPN monitoring of the Fremont River in Capitol Reef National Park (NP) from water years 2009 to 2021. The focus of this report is to (1) examine patterns in water availability at one monitoring reach from 2010 to 2021, and (2) present geomorphology and vegetation data from four reaches monitored from 2009 to 2021. Vegetation sampling and geomorphology surveys were completed at varying intervals throughout the time period; this report looks at changes within single reaches and establishes a baseline for future comparisons. There are four monitoring reaches established on the Fremont River: (1) F-01, approximately 2.5 kilometers upstream of a knickpoint (sharp change in channel slope) and associated waterfall that emerged following construction of State Highway 24 in 1964, (2) F-07, in a large oxbow that was cut off due to the highway construction, (3) F-04, approximately 1.5 kilometers downstream of the knickpoint, and (4) F-14, approximately 4.8 kilometers downstream of the knickpoint. Geomorphic and vegetation surveys took place at all reaches. Hydrologic monitoring occurred only at F-01. From 2001 to 2021, the entire range of flows recorded at a gaging station on the Fremont River upstream of the park near Bicknell, Utah, decreased, with the steepest decreases occurring in the highest flow percentiles. Continuous hydrologic monitoring at reach F-01 in the park from 2010 to 2021 showed perennial flows in the Fremont River, with lower flows during the irrigation season (April 1?October 31). The irrigation season was also characterized by greater evapotranspiration, which may be exacerbated in the future due to higher air temperatures. Lower observed inputs and greater evapotranspiration suggest the Fremont River is at risk for progressively lower flows over time. While overbank flows occurred infrequently in the monitoring reach, inhibiting cottonwood recruitment, groundwater levels remained shallow enough to support mature cottonwood trees. Protecting spring snowmelt flows of 94 cfs (the average annual maximum 14-day rolling mean at reach F-01), or greater should maintain the current wetland vegetated zone. Maintaining the hydrologic record was challenging due to high-magnitude flood events and turbid flows; the park should consider a gaging station for an accurate discharge record. Geomorphic surveys showed net sediment deposition at reaches F-01 and F-14 in the channels, banks, and floodplains from 2009 to 2021, with more deposition occurring earlier in the study period. A large flood event in 2013 resulted in high flows and deposition of close to one meter at F-01. Only localized erosion occurred, and thalweg surveys showed that stream channels were either stable or increasing in elevation. Reach F-07, the abandoned oxbow, exhibited little geomorphic change over the study period. Riparian vegetation was characteristic of a Fremont cottonwood woodland, with canopy closure up to 30% and a mixed understory of shrubs and herbaceous species. Obligate wetland vegetation cover of 5%?10% was present at reaches F-01, F-04, and F-14. Reach F-07, in the oxbow, has transitioned to an upland system, with little to no canopy cover and no obligate wetland species. While mature cottonwoods were present in reaches F-01, F-04, and F-14, there was limited evidence of seedlings or saplings graduating into larger size classes. Cottonwood seedlings are primarily resprouts from beaver-browsed trees, although one seedling recruitment event was observed in 2014, following high flows in late 2013. Protecting some cottonwoods with chicken wire may help protect the larger size classes and maintain a mixed-age woodland. Exotic plant species cover was less than 10% in reaches F-01, F-04, and F-14. Efforts to control Russian olive (Eleagnus angustifolia) along the Fremont River appear to have been successful in these reaches. In reach F-07, exotic plant cover ranged from 9% to 25%, with notable spikes in Russian thistle (Salsola tragus) and cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) in 2010 and 2011, respectively.
