Abstract (sommario):
The crisis in academic publishing has reached a point where young scholars in many fields of the humanities may no longer be able to communicate their research in the time-honoured manner – that is, in the form of a traditional codex printed by a university press. Sooner or later, most monographs will probably have to be published on the Internet. What form will they take? Atentative answer to that question is provided by a sketch for an electronic book about publishing and the book trade in 18th-century France.

Abstract (sommario):
Knowledge of libraries and book collecting is a preliminary task for the characterisation of scientific culture and practice. In the case of Iberia, and especially Portugal, this is still a desideratum. This paper provides a first global look at this issue. In early modern Portugal religious institutions organised impressive collections of books, by far the largest in the country. These libraries not only served the religious institutions themselves, but also supplied books to lesser libraries, such as the University Library of Coimbra and the Royal Library. The Portuguese book market mirrored the purchase and selection of books made by religious congregations. This was also true for the circulation of scientific books, which depended above all on the interests, choices and cultural relations of these most peculiar book collectors.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: This article examines the efforts of Matthew Parker and his scholarly circle to understand the medieval books that he collected as archbishop of Canterbury. It argues that Parker made sense of his books by connecting them to what amounted to an emerging history of the book. That is, Parker began to piece together the formal features of different medieval books into a rough but increasingly refined timeline of the history of book production in order to contextualize any given manuscript. The evidence can be found scattered throughout Parker's library, in the form of annotations, transcripts of passages, copied illustrations, and printed books that offer a wealth of information about how Parker's team understood the books they handled. This documentation reveals how they combined scribal knowledge with textual information, to powerful ends. By connecting Parker's practices to contemporary developments in other areas of knowledge production, from alchemy to conjectural emendation, this article offers a new way forward for scholarly analysis of the early modern study of older books, especially for our analysis of early modern practices and paradigms that do not fit modern definitions of paleography and codicology.

Abstract (sommario):
The critical review of the recently published in Russia translated monography by the well known American historian of book Robert Darnton “Literary Tour de France: The World of Books on the Eve of the French Revolution” is presented. On the base of archive of the Typographic Society of Newshatel this author and researcher reconstructed the functional system of the French book market in the second half of 18th century. He observed the participation in bringing books to reader of publishers, trade representatives, transport carriers, smugglers, booksellers. Book trade documents allowed him to present the list of booksellers — the most popular books among the readers — during the period preceding the Great French Revolution. The importance of source study techniques and methodological approaches used by Robert Darnton for research in the sphere of book history of different countries and historical periods is noted.

Abstract (sommario):
Recently (January 2010), we have found that drugstore beetle, <em>Stegobium paniceum</em> (L.), is a serious pest of old books in a religious library in Cracow, Poland. About 80% old books were found more or less damaged by this pest. As the result of larval activity, many holes and tunnels were formed in damaged books. Some of them were old, some of them were new tunnels with live larvae and pupae. Many characteristic emergence holes of the adults were found in the book bindings. Around books there was an enormous amount of dust as a result of larval feeding activity. Live and dead adults were found around old books and within the library room, especially near windows. The Integrated Pest Management program was suggested to the owners and curator of the library to control infestation and to avoid the continuation of the damage.

Abstract (sommario):
In the article, based on the experience of Ukrainian bibliological science, we sought to analyze the incorruptible treasures of the printed collection of Cyrillic editions of the National Library of Ukraine by Yaroslav Mudry. Not only by presenting the books in an excursive way, but also by insisting that we set an urgent task the fact that the books, which are considered to be cult, fi nally crossed the boundaries of the temples, entering the school curriculum. Based on the experience of Ukrainian bibliologists, in particular, on the work of scientist-encyclopedist I. Ohiienko, we presented the funds of the old printed book of the National Library of Ukraine by Yaroslav Mudry. A century later, the scientist in the book «History of Ukrainian Printing» (Lviv, 1925) collected and systematized a huge source material, planning a further multi-volume edition, which would present the history of Ukrainian books XV-XVIII centuries, a description of old prints, an album of photo-graphs of their title pages, art decorations, etc., textbooks on the history of Ukrainian bib-liography, the content of ancient books, their printing techniques, the history of engraving, censorship, etc. That is, the range of research was planned to be diverse. However, these plans of the scientist were not destined to come true. And today put I. Ohiienko’s tasks were not fully implemented as he wanted. This layer was partially raised by S. Maslov, P. Popov, I. Sventsitsky, other scientists, and separate groups of book collections, but their achievements still had the character of a narrowed circle of research. The general public knew the old Ukrainian book on occasion, its texts were mostly used in churches, ie in terms of worship. The book did not reach school curricula. We picked up all the old books of the National Library of Ukraine by Yaroslav Mudry, told about the printing house, au-thors, purpose, and we very much hope that, in the end, the old book will enter the second-ary school and take a worthy place in the educational process. Otherwise, young people will continue to be insuffi ciently educated, will not know their roots, customs and rituals.

Abstract (sommario):
Recently, on Facebook, an editor asked some biblical scholars to share what books got us interested in biblical studies. As I look back, what really got me excited were books that invited me into knowing God more through the Old Testament in light of the bigger story of Scripture. In this reflection, I will share about three such books. None of these books would qualify as “Old Testament theologies,” yet I reckon that they have had a far greater theological impact upon me than anything I have read in the field of Old Testament theology.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractA popular trend in 16th-century Hungarian Neo-Latin poetry was the transposition of biblical, especially Old Testament books and texts. Georg Purkircher (Georgius Purkircher) paraphrased the Book of Wisdom, Péter Laskai Csókás (Petrus C. Lascovius) the Song of Songs, János Bocatius (Johannes Bocatius) the Book of Sirach/Ecclesiasticus, and Leonhardus Mokoschinus (Leonhardus Mokoschinus) a part of the Old Testament books (from Genesis to II Kings) in Latin. Internationally, only Mokoschinus' paraphrase of the Old Testament is known to any extent. In the present paper I will attempt to outline the main similarities and differences between the paraphrases of the Old Testament in Germany and in Hungary by means of a detailed philological analysis of the domestic corpus of texts and by highlighting some related parallels in Germany.

Abstract (sommario):
The article analyzes the newly discovered monuments of the Old-Believer book and artistic culture—fasteners of old printed and manuscript liturgical books of the 18th-19th centuries. In 1990s, these fasteners were kept in a small box in a prayer house of the Old-Believers of the Fedoseevsky community in Novosibirsk. It was strictly forbidden to keep service books open, which is observed up to the present time (explanation: “so as not to defile something unclean”). For this reason, books were closed and snapped into place. Observations of the way of life of the Novosibirsk Old-Believers-Fedoseevites allowed us to conclude that the community members treated not only books, but also metal fasteners as sacred objects. The tradition to snap liturgical books continued to live in the years of the USSR until the end of the 1990s, when the community ceased to exist due to the demolition of the prayer house. As a result of the analysis, the classification of the types offasteners, depending on the shape, ornaments and execution technique, was carried out. Some general patterns of ornamentation of fasteners are identified, possible vectors of cultural contacts that influenced the design (medieval Russia and the Middle East) are indicated, and the author’s interpretations of religious meanings imprisoned in the ornaments of these works of applied art are provided. The need to protect objects of worship and everyday life from “evil”, the depicted ornamentalfigures allow us to assume precisely the apotropic (protective) purpose of the fasteners under consideration. Paradoxical as it may seem, the discovered materials also make it possible to draw a parallel with the well-known ancient Slavic archaeological materials, attributed by archaeologists to Pagan amulets.

Abstract (sommario):
The article analyzes the state of research on the old historical Lithuanian personal libraries, including the means of inquiry and sources. The author also analyzes the similarities between personal library research and institutional library research. It was found that book ownership marks are the main and most widely applicable personal library research source. This resource is used productively after Lithuanian scientific libraries have accelerated the scientific cataloging of the old books and started recording the provenance of each item (such catalogs include catalogs of the Elsevier, the Aldine, paleotypes, Bibliotheca Sapiehana by Vilnius University Library, Lituanica catalog by the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, and the catalog of the 15th and 16th century books in Kaunas libraries by Kaunas County Public Library). The main and most widely applied Lithuanian historical personal library method is the provenance method, although good results are obtained using the hybrid method. The author concludes that most publications on old personal historic Lithuanian libraries limit their subjects to the personal libraries of nobility, state and religious actors (till the 19th Century) and the 19th century Lithuanian intellectuals. Historic personal libraries of lower-class individuals warrant more research (one example is Zigmantas Kiaupa’s publication about the book collections of ordinary old Kaunas’ citizens, published in 1985).

Abstract (sommario):
This review article has a conventional purpose, namely, to assess the contributions made by thirteen recent books, most by British historians, to the history of British foreign policy and the European states system during the revolutionary, Napoleonic, and post-Napoleonic eras. There is, however, a problem. None of the books is conventional diplomatic history. Almost half relate only indirectly to foreign policy, while for the remainder foreign policy constitutes only part of their subject matter. The review therefore consciously runs two risks: that of judging the books by inappropriate standards and that of drawing conclusions about current historiography in this field and period from an inappropriate sample. The reader will have to judge whether the results justify the procedure.Geoffrey Best's War and Society in Revolutionary Europe illustrates the problem. Best clearly succeeds in his goal of going beyond the study of military organizations to the study of war itself as a “unique human interest and activity.” The book is far-ranging, delightfully written, based on wide reading, and packed with insights. It also contributes substantially to the history of international politics, mainly by demonstrating how powerful an impact armies and combat had. Yet from the political historian's standpoint there is ground for some frustration as well as for pleasure. Best's descriptions of how armies developed from the Old Regime into the nineteenth century and his analyses of the impact of war in 1792–1815 are excellent for France and Britain and adequate for Prussia and Spain.

Grigory MiheevThe Historical Book of russian Old Believers found in the Daugavpils Region This article presens the description of the old print book of Russian Old Believers found and researched in Daugavpils, Latvia in 2010. This old print of the Book of Psalmes, with some handwritten inscriptions presents an unfinished work of an unknown scribe and restorator of incunable Books of Psalms. The description contains as following: the condition of the book binding and features of preserved part of printed texts, paper and 8 types of watermarks that were found on it. The pictures of filigrees and short details about paper mills, where the similar filigrees were used, are attached. The author provides the reproduction of the font, miniature, colophon, initials, three of publications and two hand written records. The print is identified as being close or similar to the Books of Psalmes and the other books printed by Pyotr Mstislavets, Vasil Garaburda and Mamonichi in the years between 1574 and 1601. The finding has been defined as similar to the “Black Dot Book of Psalms”, presumably printed by Mamnochis printing house in Vilnus. Its closest copy might be considered “The Red Dot Book of Psalmes” printed by Pyotr Mstislavets in 1678 in the same printing house. The date of the described print has been estimated as not later than July, 1600.

Abstract (sommario):
The original AO HRR color vision test has been considered by many as one of the best plate tests. It is still accepted by many governmental agencies for color vision certification. In their 1954 publication, Hardy, Rand, and Rittler stated that specially compounded inks were used for printing to avoid color changes with time. Fifty years later, it is both important and interesting to determine whether the wear and tear cause significant color changes. The chance finding of a never-used second edition offers an opportunity to evaluate the color changes. A GretagMacbeth Spectrolino spectrophotometer was used to measure the chromaticities of the never-used book, and an extensively used book. Four plates (#4, 7, 13, 16), selected randomly from the four red-green sections, were analyzed. The colored dots from each of the eight plates were plotted on a CIE chromaticity diagram. Isocolor lines were drawn to evaluate chromatic alignment. Chromaticities for plates #4 and 7 are significantly different between the two books. With regard to alignment with isocolor lines, the extensively used book is better than the never-used book for plate #4. There is significant misalignment on plate #7 for both books. Chromaticities for plates #13 and 16 are essentially identical between books, all with good alignment with isocolor lines. The overall comparison shows that the chromatic alignment characteristics of the extensively used book are not worse than the never-used book. Since colors in these plates have to be aligned with both the protan and deutan axes, any significant color changes would have disturbed this delicate requirement. The findings of many plates with good alignment, and the lack of differences on plates #13 and 16 between books, suggest that there are no significant color changes over time. Differences between books on plates #4 and 7 were likely the result of the original printing process.

Abstract Like other »post-exilic« books, Haggai was traditionally considered to be a »late« text. In agreement with this, several important studies published in recent decades have paid great attention to the ways Haggai works with older literary traditions. However, in the wake of shifts in the dating of many biblical texts, even entire literary traditions, the question arises: if we continue to situate at least a substantial core of Haggai in the early Persian period, which texts or traditions could have been known to the prophet or redactor(s) of the book? The article argues that, within the history of biblical literature, Haggai can be considered a relatively old book, and that it offers a small yet interesting window into several traditional aspects of Judean religion, mostly uninfluenced by the important theological developments of the »exilic« and Persian periods.

Abstract (sommario):
Old Believers’ service books from the Piirissaar house of prayer in Estonia were rescued from a fire and the damaged oak boards of the wooden covers of one of the books were dendrochronologically dated back to AD 1353. The dendrochronological reference shows that the oak wood originates from East Pomerania-Gdansk region. The intriguing fact is that the book was not printed until 1879 in Moscow. The seemingly contradictory dates and locations can be explained by the adventurous history of the Old Believers sects in Russia. The Old Believers were suppressed during the Russian Orthodox Church reforms between 1652 and 1666 and many of them escaped to remote marginal areas of the empire or emigrated, e.g. to Rzeczpospolita. Due to lively communication between the Old Believers’ congregations, their literature moved from country to country. In this case, a newer book of the Old Believers was bound with old wooden covers from Poland.

Our note is devoted to the study of the role of Ezra in the formation of the corpus of books of the Old Testament. Partly information about this hinted in the canonical Book of Ezra. As it found out, among Greek exegetes were opinion that Ezra was more likely a codifier of the Holy Scriptures, while in the East Syrian interpretation (especially, in the work of Išo‘dad of Merv) were think that Ezra wrote the burnt Scripture ‘from his heart’. The interpretation of Išo‘dad is based, as it evidence, on the Syriac version of the 4th Book of Ezra.

Abstract Co-teaching an interdomain literature and biology course, before, during, and after the COVID-19 protocols led the authors to consider how interdisciplinarity might serve as a means to “de-extinction” for English. The authors, an English professor and a biologist, provide contrasting models representing their distinct perspectives on how English may be revivified through disciplinary integration.

Abstract (sommario):
A student of mine, Andy Ohrman, received a thoughtful but unusual gift from his sister. It is an old arithmetic book she had stumbled on at a New England yard sale. Although the pages are brittle and browned by time, their contents are quite legible. Knowing that her brother is studying to be a mathematics teacher, she purchased it for him. The book's front page bears the title The Columbian Arithmetician and declared the author's ambitious mission to present a “New System of Theoretical and Practical Arithmetic Performed in Simple and Compound Numbers adopted to the Commerce of the United States and Designed for the Instruction of Youth.” Its author remains anonymous, identifying himself pointedly as “an American”; however, the printer is clearly designated as William Allen of Haverhill, Massachusetts, and the year of publication 1811. Andy knew of my interest in old mathematics books and lent it to me to read.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis summarizes the process of discovering books donated by the Samcheok Sim’s family in Sookmyung women’s university library. And I tried a list of donated books and a simple classification. As a result of the study, a total of 645 donated books of 313 types were identified. The seal on the book showed that it also included books that could be retroactive until the early 16th century. In the future, I learned that it is necessary to increase the completion of the list through a closer examination of old books held in the library.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper analyzes inventories of the late 15th–17th centuries from four major Russian monasteries: St Cyril’s of Belozersk, The Solovetsky monastery, Joseph-Volokolamsk monastery, and The Holy Trinity – St Sergius monastery. These inventories list the monasteries’ property for its safekeeping. The inventories of monastic libraries contain valuable information about the system of book keeping and the development of bibliography in Old Rus’. They also provide some clues for attribution of books, which can help in reconstructing the concepts of bookmaking technologies in Early Modern period. These technological notes in descriptions of books are organized according to the system created by the inventories compilers: the format, the binding, the artistic values, the type and technique of writing, the page’s composition, the writing material, the state of preservation. The paper shows that the major goal in creating these inventories was to single out the most important elements allowing to recognize the book. Yet the description of these elements was not uniform. The attention was mainly directed to external attribution of a book. From the second half of the 16th century the cursive writing and the so-called metnoe pismo (a sort of scrittura usuale) were already recognized as different from standard book writing and had to be distinguished and indicated in book inventories. The inventories reflected those characteristics of books that were important for the librarians and therefore shaped certain semantic structures in professional mentality of Old Russian bookmen. For modern scholars they can serve as markers that follow the process of the development of book technologies in Early Modern period.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to the study of the problem of textuality of the Old Believers’ community, where the text was an argument in proving the illegality of the actions of the reformers, determined the ideology of the movement, the political, social views of the participants, and the peculiarities of the religious life of the communities. Due to the appeal to ancient manuscripts and early printed books, a fund of citations was formed, that testified to the validity of Old Believers’ point of view on innovation. Having inherited from the scribes of Ancient Russia respect for the book, bordering on its sacralization, the opponents of church reform began to treat the selected fragments of texts in a similar way. As a result, the “canon of sacred texts” was formalized. As a result, these extracts began to be perceived by the Old Believers as reflecting the tradition of the Russian Church and equated to the reading of the Holy Scripture. The Old Believers used the fund of fragments of authoritative texts, formed by several generations, describing the tradition of the Russian Church, the defenders of which they proclaimed themselves. The canon of Sacred Texts was composed not only of extracts from ancient manuscripts, but also from pre-Nikon Moscow printed editions. Extracts from books published in the time of Patriarch Iosif, the content of which should be characterized as the creative heritage of the Kiev Metropolis, adapted for the Russian reader, became fundamental. Turning to the analysis of church policy in the first half of the 17th century allowed to conclude that the Church, solving the problem of religious education of the population, introduced these texts into circulation. Consequently, opponents of church reform had reason to use them by description of the Russian tradition.

Abstract (sommario):
The following article describes and analyzes the spirituality of taiji quan in the West. Constructed around a particular North American perception of this Chinese martial art, the spirituality is based on discursive strategies that enable authors of taiji quan books (and their readers) to make sense of their practice in a North American context. Using reception theories and Gadamer’s notion of fusion ofhorizon, three points will be highlighted here: 1) taiji quan books published in North America since the 1960s present this martial art as a spiritual practice 2) which the authors perceive as a Chinese Daoist spirituality 3) but which in fact is actualized in a North American socio-cultural context so that it meets the expectations of a certain category of practitioners. This means that the “spirituality of taiji quan” as presented by Western books has less to do with Chinese religious tradition than contemporary spirituality cloaked in old Daoist imagery.
