Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this thesis was to investigate how new Chinese words are formed and to examine the linguistic patterns among them. This thesis focused on the analysis of Chinese words formed in 2014. The quantitative data for the analysis included a collection of 423 new Chinese words from the book 2014 汉语新词语 (hànyǔxīn cíyǔ) by Hou and Zhou. Parts of speech and number of syllables in the new words were investigated, although the focus was on word-formation processes. A discussion of derivation, blending, abbreviation, analogy, borrowing, change of meaning, compounding and inventions is also included. The share of each word-formation process used for each of the new words was presented statistically in order to reveal the significance of each word-formation process. The analysis showed that compounding, derivation and abbreviation were the major word-formation processes in 2014. The study also suggests that words formed by derivation and analogy were much more frequent in 2014, in comparison to previous studies. Furthermore, the ways words are formed in Chinese are changing and evolving, as some word-formation processes are becoming more frequently used in the formation of new words.

Abstract (sommario):
The design of a machine which reads unconstrained words still remains an unsolved problem. For example, automatic interpretation of handwritten documents by a computer is still under research. Most systems attempt to segment words into letters and read words one character at a time. However, segmenting handwritten words is very difficult. So to avoid this words are treated as a whole. This research investigates a number of features computed from whole words for the recognition of handwritten words in particular. Arabic text classification and recognition is a complicated process compared to Latin and Chinese text recognition systems. This is due to the nature cursiveness of Arabic text. The work presented in this thesis is proposed for word based recognition of handwritten Arabic scripts. This work is divided into three main stages to provide a recognition system. The first stage is the pre-processing, which applies efficient pre-processing methods which are essential for automatic recognition of handwritten documents. In this stage, techniques for detecting baseline and segmenting words in handwritten Arabic text are presented. Then connected components are extracted, and distances between different components are analyzed. The statistical distribution of these distances is then obtained to determine an optimal threshold for word segmentation. The second stage is feature extraction. This stage makes use of the normalized images to extract features that are essential in recognizing the images. Various method of feature extraction are implemented and examined. The third and final stage is the classification. Various classifiers are used for classification such as K nearest neighbour classifier (k-NN), neural network classifier (NN), Hidden Markov models (HMMs), and the Dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN). To test this concept, the particular pattern recognition problem studied is the classification of 32492 words using ii the IFN/ENIT database. The results were promising and very encouraging in terms of improved baseline detection and word segmentation for further recognition. Moreover, several feature subsets were examined and a best recognition performance of 81.5% is achieved.

Abstract (sommario):
Thomas Willis is commonly used as a touchstone for the modern brain sciences: his Cerebri anatome (1664) is celebrated as having placed the brain on its 'modern footing,' while Willis is referred to as the 'founding father' of neuroscience. Driven by a set of present-centred and medically orientated concerns, great emphasis has traditionally been placed upon Willis's neuro-anatomy as a precursor to our own ways of thinking about the 'neurological brain'. Such approaches have tended to neglect Willis's broader theoretical contributions, particularly his physiological theories, or have failed to consider how (distinctly early modern) concepts around the soul informed Willis's interpretation of the anatomical brain. This thesis re-examines Willis through his use of metaphors and analogies, exploring the relationship between his use of language and his physical practices around the brain (dissection, chemical experiment). Although recent scholarship on Willis has turned to social or cultural history approaches, there has yet to be a detailed examination of Willis's use of language. Ideas around the appropriate use of metaphor and analogy in scientific writing have long informed responses to Willis. His credibility has been undermined by suggestions of theoretical embellishment and imaginative speculation - charges that necessarily pick up on the use of analogical reasoning. In contrast, this thesis argues that Willis's concept of the brain cannot be viewed independently of the ways in which it was described and represented: rather than mere ornaments, metaphor and analogy were an essential part of Willis's conceptual architecture and tools by which the brain (as an object of knowledge) was made to exist in the world. Willis's use of language embeds his knowledge within a specific set of intellectual, cultural and material contexts of the late seventeenth century. His ideas around the brain cannot, therefore, be straightforwardly appropriated as part of our own understanding of neurology.

Abstract (sommario):
The need for housing in Sweden has been showing a constant increase over the past couple of years. However, this situation might change in 2018 since there are indications that the increase in demand will reach its peak. On the other hand, the use of timber as a load bearing structure has become more popular in the multi-family house building sector. It is competing with concrete and steel frames, and its market share might even reach 50% by the year of 2025. Adding the involvement of customers in house design decisions and a high level of customization, the conclusion is that timber house building must continue the development towards mass customization. There is a lack of knowledge on how mass customization is developed and implemented regarding off-site manufacturing systems. In this thesis, a contribution is made to manufacturing system development in timber house building by proposing a novel approach to aligning off-site manufacturing systems to the requirements of production strategy, market needs, product design, and manufacturing processes. The proposed conceptual framework is a synthesis of the knowledge gained from three empirical studies and different methods found in theories of changeable manufacturing systems, mass customization, and manufacturing system development. The research purpose addressed by the presented work, is to increase the knowledge on how the development potential of off-site manufacturing systems can be identified in mass customization-oriented timber house building. Case study research was applied to gather the empirical data. The data collection and analysis methods used in the empirical studies can be useful when discussing the potential improvements. However, these data are not comprehensive enough in terms of presenting a holistic view of off-site manufacturing and consideration of the market as well as variation in product and processes. Therefore, a comprehensive set of requirements is proposed in the conceptual framework together with a step by step description of how the development potential of off-site manufacturing systems can be identified.

Abstract (sommario):
Online gaming is a relatively modern phenomenon that is not older than 20 years. Most online players speak English in some form, either by talking or writing. The two games, 'World of Warcraft' and 'Counterstrike' have taken over the gaming-world and the gamers' language has found its way right into the dictionary. The aim of the study was to examine how meanings of language change or evolve in the context of online video game playing. In this study, two gameplay videos were transcribed and analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Gaming words were identified through calculating word frequency in terms of types and tokens, and these identified words were then analysed qualitatively. The result contains three categories: Contextual Meaning, New Meaning, and New Words. The concepts of Contextual, New meaning and New Words were compared to dictionary meanings to see whether new meanings were created in the context of the gaming world. Based on the result, the study suggests that game language can influence the overall usage of language in the future.

Yazdanpanah, Fahimeh. "Evolution and stratification of off-gasses in stored wood pellets". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/45352.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Storage of wood pellets has resulted in several deathly accidents in connection with off-gassing and self-heating. The goal of the present study was to quantify off-gassing characteristics of white wood pellets when stored in an experimental silo. Wood pellets properties were characterized with respect to gas adsorption-desorption and spatial and temporal concentrations of off-gases and thermal conditions within the pilot storage were quantified. In the last part, the effectiveness of purging the silo in reducing off-gas concentration was evaluated. To assess the adsorption of off-gases by wood pellets in storage, Temperature Programmed Desorption was used. Highest CO₂ adsorption was seen by torrefied wood pellets while lowest uptake was showed to be for steam exploded pellets. Quantifying the uptake of CO was challenging due to chemical reaction and therefore strong bonds between the material and carbon monoxide. Studies on emission and stratification of off-gases showed higher emission factor compared to work done with white wood pellets in small scale. Some stratifications were observed for CO₂ and CH₄ over the first days of storage. However for CO the stratification was much clear and related to high uptake of CO by wood pellets over time. During the entire period of storage, maximum temperature in the silo was recorded on day 15 of storage (storage time was 63 days) at the elevation of 2.5 m (silo dimension was 1.2m diameter and 4.6m height). Measured temperature in the silo during 5.5 hour purging experiments with air at 18-18.5 °C, helped the temperature decrease in the lower parts and slightly middle parts of the silo after 200 minutes of purging. To evaluate the effectiveness of a purging system to sweep the off-gases from the experimental silo, multiple purging tests were done. Mixing experiments showed large deviations from plug flow and thus better mixing for all superficial velocities used. Predicted results showed the concentration model fitted best to the measured off-gas concentration at the bottom and in the middle of the silo while the model overestimated the exponential decay of the off-gases in the head-space of the silo.

This research focuses primarily on the interactive documentary comparing it to what we consider traditional documentary. The research describes the study of the documentary genre and its evolution over time. In a more current context, the changes brought about in the documentary genre are referred to as a result of Web emergence and media convergence, which allows the interactive documentary to present itself as an emerging genre. Having established certain theoretical parameters, this document describes and analyzes the webdocumentary: “The Interview Project” by David Lynch. It is intended to conduct and produce an interactive and participatory documentary that presents a non-linear fashion testimonies and stories of Portuguese descendants, to see how each generates and reflects the cultures that make up their hybrid identities.

Abstract (sommario):

This study investigated the inpatient to outpatient social work hand off process at a Southern California Kaiser Permanente facility. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of social work intervention in reducing hospital readmissions.

Secondary data were analyzed from a sample of 73 patients in the hand off group and 73 patients in an equivalent comparison group. Deidentified data were compiled from patients’ charts and other documentation.

Readmission rates were lower in the hand off group (30.1%) than in the comparison group (34.2%), although the difference was not significant. Those in the hand off group who were not readmitted received significantly more social work touches than those who were readmitted. Length of stay, Admissions, Comorbidities, Emergency Visits (LACE) scores (a measure of risk) were also a predictor of readmission in the hand off group but not in the comparison group.

Research continues to be needed regarding the role of medical social workers in reducing hospital readmissions.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
My dissertation asserts that the discourses which at the present time construct the world of work for teachers in adult TESOL, are no longer adequate to represent the field in these new and rapidly changing times. For the last forty years the discourses that have constructed the field present a totalising, gender free, liberal humanist view of TESOL, rendering women's experience invisible, no longer speaking to or for women teachers who make up more than ninety percent of the teachers in Victorian adult TESOL programs (Cope & Kalantzis 1993, Brodkey 1991, Fine 1992, Peirce 1995). I begin by exploring the work of women teachers in adult TESOL, focusing on women teaching in the fast growing de-institutionalised settings of adult TESOL programs, which remain marginalised from the central programs in terms of administrative policy and practice. I report the findings of a series of projects undertaken by the teachers and the researcher by which new insights and understandings of teachers beliefs about their work and the changes which are currently reconstructing the field of adult language and literacy education in Australia, have been gained. I questions the discourses of applied linguistics which have for the past forty years constructed the field of adult TESOL in Australia and suggests that these lack a social theory (Candlin 1989). From the research findings I questions the possibility of continuing to work in the ways of the past, in the current climate of reconstruction of the field, rapid policy change and continued erosion of resources. I suggest that the previously loose system which held this field of work together, the ways of working, the understandings of practice, have in the light of these new times, been stretched to the limit and are in real danger of collapse. For the women working in TESOL this continued incursion of the systems into their work and the changes that have taken place, the denial of their ways of working, their local knowledge and gendered experiences, can be read against Habermas' concept of the colonisation of the lifeworld of language teaching (Habermas 1987).

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis provides a missing link between the British feminist art movement from the 1970s onwards and three contemporary female artists, namely Tracey Emin, Gillian Wearing and Sam Taylor-Wood. The dissertation demonstrates the influence that feminist art has had on contemporary women's art. It shows how various elements, typically associated with feminist art from a previous generation of female artists. have been either consciously or unconsciously incorporated into the way the three artists in question approach their work. The ideas. concerns and ways of working of a previous generation of feminist artists are discussed in relation to gender politics, the idea of the traditional male "genius", the question of feminist art practice, the role of the female body, performance versus performativity and the representation of women in visual culture. The contemporary work is discussed in relation to the above issues, drawing out comparisons to feminist art practice where appropriate. The thesis also contextualises Tracey Emin, Gillian Wearing and Sam Taylor-Wood within the generation of the Young British Artists (YBAs) of the 1990s. Here it focuses on ideas such as self-promotion versus patronage, the particular sensationalist art practice of the YBAs, the problematic attitude towards cultural theory and finally, it demonstrates how women artists of that particular period tended to work. The dissertation does not aim to present a comprehensive survey of all feminist visual arts activity in Britain and North America, the geographical locations of interest for this thesis, nor is it an all encompassing art historical overview of the activities in London, during the 1990s. The thesis should be understood as a celebration of the significance of the feminist art movement and as a demonstration of the validity of many of its concerns, even today, as exemplified in the work of the three artists in question.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is a comparative study that focuses on the writings of an Oxford-trained Indian Christian theologian, priest and Bishop named A.J. Appasamy (1891-1975), and his theological interaction with the texts and tradition of the Srivaiṣṇava reformer Rāmānuja (1017-1137). For my doctrinal focus I have chosen to explore Appasamy’s four-fold Johannine application of the ‘Body of God’ analogy - the ‘Universe’, ‘Incarnation’, ‘Eucharist’ and ‘Church’ being his four divine embodiments. Post-Independence, Appasamy faced criticisms from expatriate theologians who described his theological project as ‘bold heresies’, a ‘synthesis of Christianity and Vedanta’ that has ‘shifted the axis’ from Christianity to ‘Hindu religion’. By following the leads in Appasamy writings back to his devotional tradition, I argue that such charges are, in fact, baseless and that his application of the analogy is rooted, rather, in the sacramental theology of his own Anglican tradition. To do so I demonstrate how his views on divine embodiment closely reflect the theological developments that took place in the first half of the last century between the time of Charles Gore and William Temple. Methodologically, I am arguing for the need to understand theological discourse as being semiotically and traditionally situated, embedded in mythic narrative and embodied in ritual practice. In doing so, however, I further argue that just as Appasamy’s detractors have failed to read him in the context of his devotional tradition, so, too, has Appasamy done with Rāmānuja. By reading Rāmānuja more as a Vedāntic philosophical theologian than as a sectarian practitioner, he has abstracted the Ācārya from his tradition - a tradition that is undoubtedly temple-based. On this basis I challenge Appasamy’s use of Rāmānuja’s terms and propose what I believe to be a better reading of John’s Gospel for future comparative interaction with the Srivaiṣṇava tradition.

Singh, Leher, e Carolyn Quam. "Can bilingual children turn one language off? Evidence from perceptual switching". Elsevier Inc, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/620189.

Abstract (sommario):
Bilinguals have the sole option of conversing in one language in spite of knowing two languages. The question of how bilinguals alternate between their two languages, activating and deactivating one language, is not well understood. In the current study, we investigated the development of this process by researching bilingual children's abilities to selectively integrate lexical tone based on its relevance in the language being used. In particular, the current study sought to determine the effects of global conversation-level cues versus local (within-word phonotactic) cues on children's tone integration in newly learned words. Words were taught to children via a conversational narrative, and word recognition was investigated using the intermodal preferential-looking paradigm. Children were tested on recognition of words with stimuli that were either matched or mismatched in tone in both English and Mandarin conversations. Results demonstrated that 3- to 4-year-olds did not adapt their interpretation of lexical tone changes to the language being spoken. In contrast, 4- to 5-year-olds were able to do so when supported by informative within-word cues. Results suggest that preschool children are capable of selectively activating a single language given word-internal cues to language.

Kozlovski, Alina. "Off the Map: The Conceptualisation of Urban Space in the Ancient Roman World". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/9899.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines the way Romans conceptualised and navigated their urban spaces. Because this was a world where city maps were surprisingly rare, we should consider how else a city could be perceived. So many of our sources describe places based on landmarks which are not connected by named streets that ancient cities appear to be itinerant lists which jump from one destination to another. This results in urban spaces that are full of invisibilities, confusions and errors which the modern mind wants to rationalise and put back into place. I argue instead that we need to understand why the Romans accepted the situation as we find it rather than explain away an intrinsic element of our evidence. The city within texts has received a lot of attention in scholarship recently, with modern scholars such as Vasaly (1993) and Edwards (1996) who concentrate on the constructed worlds of historians, orators and poets. Archaeological remains, on the other hand, have begun to be analysed using modern urban theories in order to see tired ruins in new ways (Laurence (1994), Kaiser (2011) and others). This study combines some of the ways that these scholars have looked at both literary and archaeological sources to gain a different perspective on the study of ancient urban spaces. The focus lies with the late republican and early imperial periods where we can see the Romans using urban topography for self-identification, propaganda and ornament. By using the words, art and architecture of the ancients, we can begin to rearticulate the cities which they knew. This study is arranged in two halves which weave one story. The first half challenges our assumptions and the second attempts to recover what the ancients have left for us to see. Since we cannot escape the trappings of our own context, we must first examine what it has to offer, beginning with the way cartography has been studied and inserted into the ancient world. The next chapter looks at the city that was spoken, not written, within ancient urban navigation. After that, architecture takes us on a walk through ancient ritual. The final three chapters specific ancient contexts more closely in order to understand the invisibilities, confusions and errors which the Romans themselves accepted. With all of this combined, this thesis travels through ancient urban spaces and asks how they have been understood by the history that has remembered them.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
World War II affected individuals across the nation, both on the home front and on the front lines. Manti, Utah received a new industry, a parachute plant, in connection with the war. Hundreds of women from Sanpete County and neighboring counties were employed through the duration of the war in everything from sewing and inspection to supervision of production. Some of the women utilized childcare facilities, some formed a union, and many found community and familial support. For many of them, this wartime wage work provided a welcomed alternative to the work usually found in rural areas, such as farm work, housework, and café work. Women were primarily motivated to work out of patriotic duty and economic opportunity. In many wartime industries, women were in previously male-dominated occupations and lost their jobs at the conclusion of the war. In contrast, the parachute plant offered its women workers the opportunity to continue working when the plant began manufacturing clothing after the war, and the surrounding rural community was largely supportive of its working women. This study makes a case for the long-term impact of wartime work upon individual women. Work experience outside the home affected the women's estimation and definition of themselves. The war period was a crucial event in women's lives, not just an important passing stage. Oral histories allow interpretation in the context of their adult lives from a long-term perspective. By delving into community and family situations and looking at these women on an individualized basis in the long-term, this study goes deeper than surveys and makes substantive contributions to our understanding of the war's influence. The period of wartime work, when viewed in the long-term context of the women's lives, was significant especially in that women had additional economic resources at their disposal and acquired new-found confidence and skills. Women's work experiences provoked desire for future work and served as a source of confidence to them. Personal, individualized victories for women, often ignored or concealed by aggregate statistics on women's work during and immediately following the war, were a reality for women in Manti and likely elsewhere in America.

Abstract (sommario):
This study focuses on P.I. Tchaikovsky's last completed work, the richly symbolic Six Songs, Opus 73. It demonstrates for the first time how Tchaikovsky's significant literary talents impacted on his song output in general, and on this cycle of songs in particular, providing us also with new insights into his personality. The composer selected and sequenced the poems used for the Opus 73 set to form the cycle of texts himself. The resulting songs are underpinned by a network of internal connections, which parallel the techniques used in the original poems in remarkable ways and link subtly with coded fate messages found elsewhere in the composer's output. The study presents evidence which enhances Pyotr Il'ich's reputation as a skilled manipulator of words, ideas and music.

Abstract (sommario):
The study examines the complexity of how social media can be studied, and in what way the social networks relate to networks in social media and how it affects the consumers. The purpose with the study is to examine the relation between social media and social networks, with a focus on consumer behavior and thereby create a general model that explains the problem.  The study is based on a literature review that is primarily compiled by articles with focus on issues surrounding social networks, electronic social networks and social media. A survey was done to compile consumers' opinions about the area for the topics, in order to eventually culminate in an analysis and discussion.  It is possible to conclude that social media has expanded the social network for the individual consumer. The result is that individual consumers now can get in touch with more influencing factors and other customers that in many cases may be unknown. Even though they are unknown, consumers tend to rely on the information obtained to the extent that it can affect the purchase decision.

Abstract (sommario):
Language is a system that fundamentally influences us as human beings. There are numerous schools of thought critiquing our use of language and celebrating attempts to break free of the control it has over our lives. In that perspective a transformative play with language can be seen as critical play, and a game design approach supporting this kind of play can be defined as critical. The cut-up technique is an aleatory literary technique invented by the Dadaists in the 1920s. It was the fundamental lack of belief in society and language that gave birth to the cut-up method. Mary Flanagan includes it in her book “Critical Play: Radical Game Design” as part of the critical game-design paradigm. The singer-songwriter Dave Kapell invented Magnetic Poetry in the early 90s inspired by the cut-up technique and how artists such as William Burroughs and David Bowie used in their work. I am a co-founder of Ozma Games – a game studio based in Malmö, Sweden. In Ozma we are working on a social word game called Words of Oz. Magnetic Poetry inspired us in the design of Words of Oz, as we wanted to make a casual game that could evoke players’ creativity. The Dadaists clearly wanted to challenge the way we use language. In this essay I will compare the Dadaist cut-up method with its later adaptations Magnetic Poetry and Words of Oz. My question is whether the critical design approach is sustained in Magnetic Poetry and Words of Oz or if the change in technology and framing has limited the subversive potential from which they originated.

Abstract (sommario):
It has become more difficult for companies to differentiate themselves on the market. Traditional marketing is no longer as effective as before, and today there are several different strategies companies can use to stand out. Reputations often occur about brands and products. This reputation can be either positive or negative. Sometimes, this reputation occurs without influence from the company, but there are several strategies for companies to use to create and shape its reputation. A positive reputation can lead to increased sales and profits. The purpose of this study is to examine how companies can actively pursue this kind of rumor-mongering - Word of Mouth. We also want to study if Word of Mouth needs to be supplemented with other marketing strategies or whether it is sufficient by itself.Previous research has mainly dealt with reasons why consumers spread rumors. Buzz Marketing, which can be defined as actively working with Word of Mouth, is an area in marketing that still is relatively unexplored. Even less research has been done with the clothing industry as a study area. Hence, it is in our interest to study this share of the market. The importance of working with the rumor mill is mentioned frequently in the theory, both by generating positive word of mouth, and how to prevent negative Word of Mouth. There are various strategies that companies can use to contribute to spreading of a positive reputation; the easiest way is to ask satisfied customers to spread the reputation about the brand to their surroundings. Other forms that require more activity by the company is to offer additional products, organizing parties and various types of marketing projects. In our study, we conducted interviews with selected companies in the apparel and footwear industry. These are Dr Denim Jeansmakers, The Stray Boys, Ljung, Tailor Store and SCDG AB. The empirical material deals with how these companies are actively working with Word of Mouth and what their perception of this kind of rumor mill is. The companies interviewed also gave their version of Word of Mouth and if they feel that it is a good marketing strategy, or if it is insufficient. There are several ways to look at Word of Mouth and work with the rumor mill. The companies we interviewed do not work with this type of marketing strategy in a large extent, and only a few can provide concrete examples of methods they use. However, both our theoretical and empirical work shows the importance of working with the rumor mill and reducing negative Word of Mouth. Several of the interviewed companies proves that only working with Word of Mouth can be sufficient, however, this is clearly linked to the company's vision, target market and size. There are different opinions about whether the effect of Word of Mouth can be measured or not. Some argue that it is possible to rely on traffic for websites and increased sales; others argue that this is not enough because the effect is not isolated. A concrete measurement tool does not exist.

Abstract (sommario):
Building on the limited foundation of asset-based research in Aboriginal communities, this study explores how Aboriginal peoples living off reserve experience and perceive resilience. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five Aboriginal members of a small, non-native community. Themes emerging from the interviews highlight the importance of connections to family, culture, community, land, and public services, as well as to a sense of life purpose. These results support and expand existing resilience theory, and relate to social determinants of health and social capital theories. Implications of the study demonstrate the importance of a holistic approach to personal well-being, responsibility for which is balanced between the individual and society, and which requires careful negotiation between Aboriginal and mainstream cultures.

College Algebra is a gatekeeper course that serves as an obstacle for many students pursuing STEM careers. Lack of success in this course could be a key reason why the United States lags behind other industrialized countries in the number of students graduating with STEM majors and joining the STEM workforce. Of the many topics presented in College Algebra that pose problems, students often have particular difficulty with the application of systems of equations in the form of word problems. The present study aims to identify the factors associated with success and failure on systems of equations word problems. The goal was to identify the factors that remained significant predictors of success in order to build a theory to explain why some students are successful and other have difficulty. Using the Opportunity-Propensity Model of Byrnes and colleagues as the theoretical guide (e.g., Byrnes & Miller-Cotto, 2016), the following questions set the groundwork for the current study: (1) To what extent do antecedent (gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and university) and propensity factors (mathematical calculation ability, mathematics anxiety, self-regulation, motivation, and ESL) individually and collectively predict success with systems of equations word problems in College Algebra students, and (2) How do these factors relate to each other? Bivariate correlations and hierarchical multiple regression were used to examine the relationships between the factors and word problem set-up as well as correct completion of the word problems presented. Results indicated after all variables were entered, calculation ability, self-regulation as determined by homework score, and anxiety were the only factors to remain significant predictors of student performance on both levels. All other factors either failed to enter as significant predictors or dropped out when the complete set had been entered. Reasons for this pattern of results are discussed, as are suggestions for future research to confirm and extend these findings.

Ovens, Jayne. "Rethinking word/image relationships in contemporary art". Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2000. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/21971/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores the interaction of word and image through an intellectual framework which engages with artistic practice. By providing an overviev of interarts debates, it is suggested that notions such as the 'sister arts' have tended historically to privilege word over image. This privileging which has circumscribed word / image relationships is addressed by the Enlightenment thinker Gotthold Lessuig who differentiates between the arts in terms of medium specificity. In problematising the ways in which interarts debates have posited word/image in a dualistic relationship, this thesis exposes the difficulties in establishing an adequate critical discourse for dealing with the conjunction of words and images. A broadly poststructuralist critical framework is introduced in order to challenge the ideologies and ingrained assumptions that have dominated imcrarts debates. This study will attempt to put into practice a deconstruction of binary relations, by questioning the stability and the authority of language. It will also address the notion of an 'imperialism of language' in fixing the meaning of the visual image. Drawing upon the work of Barthes, Derrida and Lyotard, this thesis will attempt to find ways of reconfiguring the dialectical relationship between word/image wherein the two are seen to be engaging in dynarruc interactions. It will be suggested that the overcoming of word/image antagonism since the 1960s has begun to shape interactions of theory and practice in the art world itself where the influence of poststructuralist theory can be seen in artistic practices such as Concepwal art. Key issues that will be addressed include representation and meaning, the notion of textuality, framing, and the 'eruption of language into the aesthetic field'. The intellectual framework is enhanced through a detailed analysis of selected contemporary artists whose work is based on the creative juxtaposition of word and image. These case studies, which focus on Barbara Kruger, Susan Hiller and artists' books, integrate word and image, theory and practice, in order to consider issues such as a feminine aesthetic, peinture fiminine, a critique of representation, and the interaction of form and content. The case studies will be examined within the context of postmodern artistic practices. Overall, this thesis engages with the complexities of developing: a suitable framework for visual analysis, one in which word and image are in a dynamic relationship. This study will suggest that many of the issues directly conceming word and image interaction are played out in the work of contemporary artists, and that it is the challenge of theory to attempt to engage with artistic practice.

This research contributes to scholarly understanding of the labor market activity of women living in disadvantaged neighborhoods in large U.S. cities, the group most affected by 1996's welfare reform legislation. Welfare reform tightened eligibility for means-tested assistance programs, forcing many women to seek employment despite daunting personal obstacles. This research uncovers the extent to which this subset of women found steady employment in standard, living-wage jobs as well as the reasons why many have not. Unlike most work in this field, it incorporates measures of neighborhood disadvantage to further explore the spatial barriers to employment faced by this demographic group. I ask whether neighborhood context matters for employment outcomes, beyond individual characteristics and circumstances. Survey data, collected in 1998-1999 and 2001, come from the Project on Devolution and Urban Change, a longitudinal study of 3,916 women living in poor neighborhoods of four U.S. cities. I link these individual data to tract-level U.S. Census data, resulting in a longitudinal, multi-city, geographically-linked dataset, something that no previous published research uses, but an important tool for understanding how neighborhood context affects individual outcomes. The methodological approach involves a combination of regression techniques including pooled logistic regression, ordinary least squares regression, the use of change scores as predictors, the use of lagged endogenous variables, and the derivation of predicted probabilities using results from regression models. Results of this research indicate that neighborhood disadvantage is of only modest utility in explaining women's work trajectories. Although living in neighborhoods with more car ownership does improve employment outcomes, other neighborhood measures are less important. Some traditional markers of "disadvantage," such as the presence of female-headed (single parent) households, actually facilitate better employment outcomes, suggesting the need to reevaluate traditional notions of neighborhood advantage and disadvantage. Individual barriers to employment, particularly health, childcare and family responsibilities, and individual car ownership are consistently predictive of better employment outcomes. The results suggest the potential importance of spatially-targeted programs aimed at alleviating childcare, health and transportation barriers to employment.

Chen, Zhu. "Social considerations in online word of mouth". Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/52270.

Abstract (sommario):
Word of mouth (WOM) – or information shared among consumers themselves – has long been regarded as one of the most influential information sources for consumers (Brown and Reingen 1987). Unlike offline word of mouth, which typically occurs among people who know each other, online word of mouth typically occurs among strangers who do not know, and are unlikely to ever know, one other. While it is reasonable to assume that social concerns, such as maintaining relationships, are likely to influence people’s offline word of mouth behavior among familiar others, it is unclear whether social concerns dictate people’s online word of mouth behavior. In my dissertation, I look at how social considerations – thoughts about other people – affect people’s online word of mouth behavior. In the second chapter of my dissertation, I examine how people’s choice of word of mouth topic online is influenced by social considerations. Specifically, I find that while people enjoy talking about controversial topics because the topics are intrinsically interesting, people often times avoid these topics because they fear social rejection by their conversation partner. In chapter three, I examine how reviewers’ desire to appear logical (vs. imaginative) during word of mouth transmission affects their memory for the experience. I find that attempting to be logical negatively affects reviewer’s memory and this is due to the logic mindset activating verbal instead of perceptual processes during subsequent recall. In other words, impression management goals (e.g., to present oneself as a rational person) during word of mouth communication may be detrimental for people’s memory . Chapter four examines how consumer evaluations of reviews are driven by consumer beliefs about why reviews are written. I find that, in general, consumers tend to discount positive reviews because they think positive reviews are written for reviewer-specific reason such a self-enhancement or signaling expertise. When temporal contiguity cues – words and phrases indicating that the review was written immediately after the consumption experience – are present, however, people tend to give more credence to positive reviews because these cues make consumers think that the product experience, rather than reviewer-specific goals, precipitated the writing of the review. Taken together, my dissertation shows that social considerations affect both the transmission of word of mouth and the reception of online word of mouth. More generally, my dissertation showcases how thoughts about others (e.g., will others be offended?) influence consumer behavior even in situations where present and future social interactions are unlikely to occur.

Shepherd, Brittnie Renae. "The Role of Recovery from Work in Work Stress-Related Drinking". PDXScholar, 2016. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/3340.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Alcohol consumption has been linked to numerous adverse health and well-being outcomes; therefore determining what motivates individuals to drink is of utmost importance. One reason individuals may drink is to cope with work demands and their associated strain. This may be especially relevant for correctional officers (COs) as this occupation has been associated with high levels of job stressors and strain and heavy drinking. Drawing primarily on the job demands-resources and ego depletion models, this study examined how emotional job demands contribute to CO exhaustion and alcohol use. Additionally, interactions between common recovery from work experiences and exhaustion were tested to determine if recovery experiences could serve as a protective influence against work stress-related drinking. Participants were 1,370 correctional officers from 14 correctional facilities within the state of Oregon. Results indicate that exhaustion was positively related to both drinking quantity and drinking frequency and that emotional job demands had significant indirect effects on both types of drinking behaviors through employee exhaustion. The recovery experiences relaxation and detachment significantly moderated the relationship between exhaustion and drinking quantity, but not drinking frequency. Mastery experiences did not influence the strength of the positive relationship between exhaustion and either drinking outcome. These findings suggest that engaging in certain recovery experiences may lead to drinking fewer drinks on days when drinking, however the frequency of those days remains unaffected.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis investigates the work and operation of the Manchester-based poverty relief charity, the Wood Street Mission (WSM), between 1945 and 1990. While the history of post-war welfare has underlined the survival and growth of the voluntary sector at a national level, the development of middle-class philanthropy at a local and community platform remains neglected. By focusing on the WSM, this thesis explores the way in which a small charitable organization adapted to the post-war welfare state, and responded to important economic and social problems. It argues that local middle-class philanthropy in post-war Britain was a resilient and dynamic force within the mixed economy of welfare. In particular, it demonstrates that the WSM performed a diverse range of work in the fields of health, leisure, education and advice as a means to alleviate urban tension deriving from inflation, unemployment, housing, and juvenile delinquency. Moreover, the study establishes that the WSM combined traditional poverty relief activities with pioneering youth projects in responding to local community needs. Looking beyond traditional explanations of philanthropy as driven by either ‘social control’ or ‘kindness’, this research adopts a contemporary approach for the framing of charitable action in the post-war period, which accounts for central and local government policies, voluntary sector associations, and commercial forces. This thesis also develops historical understanding of the post-war experience of welfare by exploring the oral testimonies of former employees of the WSM, and people that received assistance, within the framework of a theory of memory composure. By drawing on memory theory, it offers a fresh perspective on the role of both altruism and stigma in post-war society by investigating how charity staff and ‘clients’ have interpreted and reconstructed their pasts. Building on research by Alessandro Portelli, Alistair Thomson and Penny Summerfield, it provides an important theoretical development through applying memory composure theory to the context of poverty and charity. The thesis will argue that charity staff and ‘clients’ accounts of the past were not only structured by different understandings of poverty, but also shaped by expressions of empathy. It demonstrates long-standing and contemporary definitions of poverty, as well as class, political and religious interpretations of the term, structured their oral recollections of the WSM. Moreover, it demonstrates that wide ranging concepts of empathy were conveyed in the narration of accounts concerning the WSM’s post-war activities, including an imagining of oneself in another’s situation and being emotionally affected by someone else’s experiences. Using the WSM as a site of study, this thesis breaks new ground in the historiography of post-war welfare in Britain by exploring the relationship of poverty, charity and memory.
