Abstract An oft-cited shortcoming of Interactive Activation as a psychological model of word reading is that it lacks the ability to simultaneously represent words of different lengths. We present an implementation of the Interactive Activation model, which we call Metameric, that can simulate words of different lengths, and show that there is nothing inherent to Interactive Activation which prevents it from simultaneously representing multiple word lengths. We provide an in-depth analysis of which specific factors need to be present, and show that the inclusion of three specific adjustments, all of which have been published in various models before, lead to an Interactive Activation model which is fully capable of representing words of different lengths. Finally, we show that our implementation is fully capable of representing all words between 2 and 11 letters in length from the English Lexicon Project (31, 416 words) in a single model. Our implementation is completely open source, heavily optimized, and includes both command line and graphical user interfaces, but is also agnostic to specific input data or problems. It can therefore be used to simulate a myriad of other models, e.g., models of spoken word recognition. The implementation can be accessed at www.github.com/clips/metameric.

Abstract This article makes the case that the Jeremianic tradition construes the divine word as a mode of divine presence—indeed, a locus of hostile divine presence. This oft-neglected biblical conceptualisation of divine presence has the potential to call into question our submerged assumptions about the nature of divine presence, absence, and hiddenness. The investigation traces the echoes of the mīs pî pīt pî rituals in Jeremiah 1 as well as the relationship between the word of Yhwh and the written word. The book of Jeremiah itself emerges as an embodiment of hostile divine presence. Jeremiah’s Deus Inimicus mysteriously abides in the Jeremianic scroll.

AbstractThe sequence Oft daedlata domę foręldit (four words) in the Old English Proverb from Winfrid’s Time (ProvW, 1) defies grammatical analysis because foręldit ‘delays’ requires an accusative object. It is proposed to read Oft daed lata domę foręldit as five words, with daed (= dǣd) ‘deed’ functioning as direct object. This suggestion does not require any emendation because word division in Old English is by no means regular and there is some space between daed and lata in the manuscript anyway. The dative forms domę and gahwem (2a) function as instrumentals, with gahwem perhaps subordinated to domę. The meaning of the simplex lata lies in the area of ‘late-comer’, but ‘sluggard’, ‘laggard’ or other derogatory terms are not suitable. With regard to its genre, ProvW may be viewed in conjunction with Bede’s Death Song (BDS). The vocabulary of BDS presents some problems, but, above all, the construction of the five verse-lines is not totally clear. It is proposed that the comparative thoncsnotturra (2a) has absolute function, and that the adverbial than (2b), meaning ‘then’, introduces a fresh clause. ProvW and BDS may belong to a larger group of self-contained texts no longer extant. In a wide sense they represent the category of Wisdom Poetry in a Christian context.

The article describes word formation with the lexeme aunty and auntie. At the same time, it is also a collection of various word-formation forms that describe the linguistic image of gays and show how complex the question of their identity is. The text also explains the difference between defining the words aunty and auntie, with particular emphasis on the intention of the sender and the group of recipients from which both the sender and the recipient of the statements cited in the article come from. The author of the article also draws attention to the influence of camp on shaping gay identity and on the way gays talk (communicate to the world) about themselves. The different subtypes of non-heteronormative males were particularly strongly emphasised in the article by means of appropriate quotes from the magazine “MEN!”. Listing word-formation formations in the article allowed the author to show not only one of the elements of the linguistic image of the world of gays, but also to indicate specific types of fags, how oft en homosexual men play with their sexuality. What is more, the combinations with the lexeme aunt are to serve primarily to describe the linguistic image of the gay world, through which they refer to stereotypes that are very often attributed to people from the gay community.

Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit der lexikalischen Ebene der Hexenverhörprotokolle aus dem 17. Jahrhundert, die aus Grünberg in Niederschlesien, dem heutigen Zielona Góra Polen stammen. Der Untersuchungsschwerpunkt liegt auf den miteinander konkurrierenden Wortbildungen auf hex- und zauber-, die im analysierten Schriftstück parallel auftreten und deren Verwendung sich oft sogar überlappt. Es handelt sich dabei sowohl um Bezeichnungen des beschriebenen Schadenzaubers als auch um die Benennung von Personen, die eines solchen Delikts bezichtigt werden. Die Analyse zeigt an konkreten Beispielen auf, bei welchen Bildungen das Stammmorphem hex- und in welchen das Stammmorphem zauber- dominieren.About witches and sorceresses in the early modernwitchcraft trial records from Grünberg in Lower Silesia 1663–1665This paper is a systematic linguistic analysis at the lexical level of 17th century witch trial protocols from Grünberg in Lower Silesia, today Zielona Góra in Poland. The focus of this investigation is the analysis of word formations with the word stems hex- and zauber-. Both formations occur in parallel and their usage frequently even overlaps. The aim of this paper is both the analysis of the denominations of wizardry crime as well as the designations of people who were accused of such crimes. The analysis presents in which word formations and contexts the word stems hex- and zauber- dominate.

Blackgirls are an oft-disappeared population. Frequently, race or gender in popular and education discourse are foregrounded, leaving the Blackgirls fragmented. By contrast, one word, Blackgirl, rejects compartmentalizing Blackgirls’ lives, stories, and bodies and serves as a symbolic transgression to see them/us as complex and whole. Interlaced with the symbolic is the material needed to value the Black female body. To provide redress for the disregard of Blackgirl experience and posit the Black female body as a site of cultural memory and possibility, this article offers my body as a vessel through which transgression is incited. In particular, it discusses insights from an intergenerational project on Black girlhood and the vital impromptu transgressions/grooves I made during the reflexivity process of my performance. By sharing a Blackgirl’s truths and praxis that arose from yearnings, beauty, genius, and struggles of Black girlhood and being a Blackgirl advocate, this article expands the work of Black Girlhood Studies, interjects Blackgirls into the landscape of girlhood, and contributes to its reterritorialization.

Statistical learning (SL) is the ability to extract regularities from the environment. In the domain of language, this ability is fundamental in the learning of words and structural rules. In lack of reliable online measures, statistical word and rule learning have been primarily investigated using offline (post-familiarization) tests, which gives limited insights into the dynamics of SL and its neural basis. Here, we capitalize on a novel task that tracks the online SL of simple syntactic structures combined with computational modeling to show that online SL responds to reinforcement learning principles rooted in striatal function. Specifically, we demonstrate—on 2 different cohorts—that a temporal difference model, which relies on prediction errors, accounts for participants’ online learning behavior. We then show that the trial-by-trial development of predictions through learning strongly correlates with activity in both ventral and dorsal striatum. Our results thus provide a detailed mechanistic account of language-related SL and an explanation for the oft-cited implication of the striatum in SL tasks. This work, therefore, bridges the long-standing gap between language learning and reinforcement learning phenomena.

Au cours des dernières années, des progrès considérables ont été accomplis dans le domaine de la reconnaissance de l'écriture manuscrite. Ainsi, il est intéressant de constater que la plupart des systèmes existants s'appuient sur l'utilisation d'un lexique pour effectuer la reconnaissance de mots. Or, dans la plupart des applications le lexique utilisé est de petite ou de moyenne dimension. Bien entendu, la possibilité de traiter efficacement un très grand vocabulaire permettrait d'élargir le champ des applications, mais cette extension du vocabulaire (de quelques dizaines à plus de 80000 mots) a pour conséquence l'explosion de l'espace de recherche et bien souvent la dégradation des taux de reconnaissance. Ainsi, le thème principal de cette thèse de doctorat est la reconnaissance de l'écriture manuscrite dans le cadre de l'utilisation de lexique de très grande dimension. Nous présentons tout d'abord, plusieurs stratégies pour améliorer en termes de vitesse de reconnaissance les performances d'un système de référence. L'objectif sera alors de permettre au système de traiter de très grands lexiques dans un temps raisonnable. Par la suite, nous améliorons les performances en termes de taux de reconnaissance. Pour ce faire, nous utiliserons une approche neuronale afin de vérifier les N meilleurs hypothèses de mots isolés par le système de référence. D'autre part, toutes les caractéristiques du système initial ont été conservées: système omni-scripteurs, écriture sans contraintes, et lexiques générés dynamiquement. Les contributions majeures de cette thèse sont l'accélération d'un facteur 120 du temps de traitement et l'amélioration du taux de reconnaissance d'environ 10% par rapport au système de référence. Le gain en vitesse est obtenu grâce aux techniques suivantes: recherche dans un arbre lexical, réduction des multiples modèles de caractères, techniques de reconnaissance guidée par le lexique avec et sans contraintes, algorithme "level-building" guidé par le lexique, algorithme rapide à deux niveaux pour effectuer le décodage des séquences d'observations et utilisation d'une approche de reconnaissance distribuée. Par ailleurs, la précision du système est améliorée par le post-traitement des N meilleures hypothèses de mots à l'aide d'un module de vérification. Ce module est basé sur l'utilisation d'un réseau de neurones pour vérifier la présence de chacun des caractères segmentés par le système de base. La combinaison des résultats du système de référence et du module de vérification permet alors d'améliorer significativement les performances de reconnaissance. Enfin, une procédure de rejet est mise en place et permet d'atteindre un taux de reconnaissance d'environ 95% en ne rejetant que 30% des exemples.

随着社会的发展，尤其是互联网的发展，很多语言每年都涌现出了不少新词汇。词语是每个语言最基本也是最重要的组成部分，因此分析这些新词汇的结构特点以及构词法是很有意义的。这篇文章分析了2014年出现在中文里的新词汇和它们的构词方式，论文的目的是为了更好地了解中文词汇的发展和特点。本文以《2014汉语新词语》中公布的2014年出现的新词汇作为语料进行分析，发现了以下两个主要特点：第一，合成法，派生法，缩略法是2014年产生的新词汇的主要构词方式；第二，百分之七十二的新词汇是多音节词（包含三个或者三个以上音节），而百分之八十的是名词。这些特点说明中文词汇现阶段的特点和发展趋势，跟传统的中文词汇有不同之处。
The aim of this thesis was to investigate how new Chinese words are formed and to examine the linguistic patterns among them. This thesis focused on the analysis of Chinese words formed in 2014. The quantitative data for the analysis included a collection of 423 new Chinese words from the book 2014 汉语新词语 (hànyǔxīn cíyǔ) by Hou and Zhou. Parts of speech and number of syllables in the new words were investigated, although the focus was on word-formation processes. A discussion of derivation, blending, abbreviation, analogy, borrowing, change of meaning, compounding and inventions is also included. The share of each word-formation process used for each of the new words was presented statistically in order to reveal the significance of each word-formation process. The analysis showed that compounding, derivation and abbreviation were the major word-formation processes in 2014. The study also suggests that words formed by derivation and analogy were much more frequent in 2014, in comparison to previous studies. Furthermore, the ways words are formed in Chinese are changing and evolving, as some word-formation processes are becoming more frequently used in the formation of new words.

The design of a machine which reads unconstrained words still remains an unsolved problem. For example, automatic interpretation of handwritten documents by a computer is still under research. Most systems attempt to segment words into letters and read words one character at a time. However, segmenting handwritten words is very difficult. So to avoid this words are treated as a whole. This research investigates a number of features computed from whole words for the recognition of handwritten words in particular. Arabic text classification and recognition is a complicated process compared to Latin and Chinese text recognition systems. This is due to the nature cursiveness of Arabic text. The work presented in this thesis is proposed for word based recognition of handwritten Arabic scripts. This work is divided into three main stages to provide a recognition system. The first stage is the pre-processing, which applies efficient pre-processing methods which are essential for automatic recognition of handwritten documents. In this stage, techniques for detecting baseline and segmenting words in handwritten Arabic text are presented. Then connected components are extracted, and distances between different components are analyzed. The statistical distribution of these distances is then obtained to determine an optimal threshold for word segmentation. The second stage is feature extraction. This stage makes use of the normalized images to extract features that are essential in recognizing the images. Various method of feature extraction are implemented and examined. The third and final stage is the classification. Various classifiers are used for classification such as K nearest neighbour classifier (k-NN), neural network classifier (NN), Hidden Markov models (HMMs), and the Dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN). To test this concept, the particular pattern recognition problem studied is the classification of 32492 words using ii the IFN/ENIT database. The results were promising and very encouraging in terms of improved baseline detection and word segmentation for further recognition. Moreover, several feature subsets were examined and a best recognition performance of 81.5% is achieved.

Thomas Willis is commonly used as a touchstone for the modern brain sciences: his Cerebri anatome (1664) is celebrated as having placed the brain on its 'modern footing,' while Willis is referred to as the 'founding father' of neuroscience. Driven by a set of present-centred and medically orientated concerns, great emphasis has traditionally been placed upon Willis's neuro-anatomy as a precursor to our own ways of thinking about the 'neurological brain'. Such approaches have tended to neglect Willis's broader theoretical contributions, particularly his physiological theories, or have failed to consider how (distinctly early modern) concepts around the soul informed Willis's interpretation of the anatomical brain. This thesis re-examines Willis through his use of metaphors and analogies, exploring the relationship between his use of language and his physical practices around the brain (dissection, chemical experiment). Although recent scholarship on Willis has turned to social or cultural history approaches, there has yet to be a detailed examination of Willis's use of language. Ideas around the appropriate use of metaphor and analogy in scientific writing have long informed responses to Willis. His credibility has been undermined by suggestions of theoretical embellishment and imaginative speculation - charges that necessarily pick up on the use of analogical reasoning. In contrast, this thesis argues that Willis's concept of the brain cannot be viewed independently of the ways in which it was described and represented: rather than mere ornaments, metaphor and analogy were an essential part of Willis's conceptual architecture and tools by which the brain (as an object of knowledge) was made to exist in the world. Willis's use of language embeds his knowledge within a specific set of intellectual, cultural and material contexts of the late seventeenth century. His ideas around the brain cannot, therefore, be straightforwardly appropriated as part of our own understanding of neurology.

Abstract (sommario):

Th e rich folklore background, created over the millennia, is one of the inexhaustible sources of inspiration for the classic of our literature Ion Creanga. His vivid, unmistakable style, which is due to popular spirituality, became the subject of many researches of linguists, philologists, literati, who mentioned the writer’s ingenuity to captivate through the spoken word. His works are written in a popular language, enriched with the most diverse phraseological structures: comparisons, metaphors, sayings, proverbs and witty remarks, which give the text originality, depth and unrepeatable beauty. As the writer’s fi rst biographer, Jean Boutiere, noted, „Creanga imitates the living word admirably” and „constitutes a rich folk repertoire of great interest”. Most of these phraseological structures will be found in the language of the characters from the fi lms inspired by the Crengian works. We will try to analyze the verbal expression from the perspective of an important component of the audiovisual narrative, oft en getting involved in the dramaturgical collisions of these fi lms. We will watch how the language from Creanga’s works is projected in the fi lm in order to characterize characters, states, situations, etc.

These Historical Thinking Skills rubrics were created and validated for use in the evaluation of Gates Ventures’ World History Project (WHP) curriculum. The set of rubrics for scoring teacher lessons were designed to evaluate the potential of teacher-assigned activities (e.g., an essay prompt) to provide opportunities for students to learn historical thinking skills, while the set of rubrics for scoring student work were designed to assess the extent to which students successfully used historical thinking skills in the work these activities produced (e.g., a written essay). The categories of historical thinking skills identified for measurement are aligned with widely accepted national frameworks and standards, making these rubrics applicable for use by researchers, educators and professional learning experts to study historical thinking skills learning in high school world history classrooms.

Abstract (sommario):

The article deals with the problems of translating pseudo-international words in economic texts. Incorrect interpretations of pseudo-international words in written texts and oral translations are investigated. It is noted that errors in the written version appear mainly due to the use of the most common full-text translation services, where the word spelling is a priority. For oral translation, the first variant of incorrect interpretation is more typical, when the word is pronounced similarly to Russian, but is not its analogue. The paper presents the classification of pseudo-international words according to the parts of speech: noun, adjective, verb and adverb, and also provides typical mistakes that students make when translating this vocabulary. The authors of the article also present tasks that are the most effective way to overcome misinterpretations of words related to pseudo-internationalisms.

Abstract (sommario):

The article investigates the immortality of books, collections, including those, translated into foreign languages, composed of the publications of publications of worldview journalism. It deals with top analytics on simulated training of journalists, the study of events and phenomena at the macro level, which enables the qualitative forecast of world development trends in the appropriate contexts for a long time. Key words: top, analytics, book, worldview journalism, culture, arguments, forecast.The article is characterized intellectual-spiritual, moral-aesthetic and information-educational values of of scientific and journalistic works of Professor Mykola Hryhorchuk “Where are you going, Ukraine?” and “Freedom at the Barricades”. Mykola Ivanovych’s creative informational and educational communication are reviews, reviews, reviews and current works of writers, poets, publicists. Such as Maria Matios, Vira Vovk, Roman Ivanychuk, Dmytro Pavlychko, Yuriy Shcherban, Bohdan Korsak, Hryhoriy Huseynov, Vasyl Ruban, Yaroslav Melnyk, Sofia Andrukhovych. His journalistic reflections are about memorable events of the recent past for Ukrainians and historical figures are connected with them. It is emphasized that in his books Mykola Hryhorchuk convincingly illuminates the way to develop a stable Ukrainian immunity, national identity, development and strengthening of the conciliar independent state in the fight against the eternal Moscow enemy. Among the defining ideological and political realization of the National Idea of Ukrainian statehood, which are mentioned in the scientific and journalistic works of M. Hryhorchuk, the fundamental ones – linguistic and religious – are singled out. Israel and Poland are a clear example for Ukrainians. In these states, language and religion were absolutized and it is thanks to this understanding of the essence of state-building and national identity that it is contrary to many difficulties achieve the desired life-affirming goal. The author emphasizes that any information in the broadest and narrow sense can be perceived without testing for compliance with the moral and spiritual mission of man, the fundamental values of the Ukrainian ethnic group, putting moral and spiritual values in the basis of state building. The outstanding Ukrainian philosopher Hryhoriy Skovoroda emphasized: “Faith is the light that sees in the darkness…” Books by physicist Mykola Hryhorchuk “Where are you going, Ukraine?” and “Freedom at the Barricades” are illuminated by faith in the Victory over the bloody centuries-old Moscow darkness.
