Telehealth and remote medical treatments have begun to be more commonly used in healthcare systems. Researchers have theorized that providers' abilities to treat patients are not directly tied to the proximity of the patient to the doctor, but by the identification and treatment of the patient's symptoms. Although the treatment and cure rates are being established within individual health systems and professional medical associations, empirical research is lacking regarding patient satisfaction with this remote treatment situation. The purpose of this quantitative study was to address this gap by examining satisfaction ratings of patients between virtual provider visits and face-to-face provider visits. The Clinician & Group Survey developed by the Consumer Assessment of Health Care Providers and Systems (CAHPS), through the United States government department, Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, measured patient satisfaction. Data from health care patients in the United States (N=8854) were randomly selected from the CAHPS data set containing 457,418 encounters. Of this number, 4,427 unique patient encounters were with face-to-face health care visits and 4,427 unique patient encounters were with telehealth providers. The ANOVA results showed no significant differences in patient satisfaction management between the availability of providers to meet face-to-face with patients who met with providers in a telehealth setting. Possible social change implications are a shift from face-to-face visits to virtual visits structured in the need to shift all patients from the standard office visit system to the on-demand network opportunity that virtual telehealth and mobile commerce health care offers to allow the benefit of technology to assist these patients.

Passar-se moltes hores assegut i moure’s poc està associat al desenvolupament de malalties cròniques. Els llocs de treball d'oficina han estat considerats entorns clau per reduir aquests comportaments sedentaris amb substitució d’activitats que impliquen una major despesa energètica. Per això, l’objectiu principal de la tesi és investigar l’impacte d'una intervenció per reduir el temps assegut i augmentar l'activitat física en treballadors d'oficina a l’estat espanyol. En l’estudi 1, es va dur a terme un disseny quasi-experimental amb treballadors de sis campus universitaris espanyols (n=264). La intervenció va consistir en una pàgina web que proposava estratègies ecològiques per incrementar progressivament el nombre de passes mitjançant tasques laborals actives, rutes caminant, i l’augment de la intensitat caminant. Utilitzant un model mixt lineal, els resultats varen mostrar una interacció significativa en temps assegut, nombre de passes i perímetre de cintura. En l’estudi 2 es varen realitzar entrevistes semi-estructurades a 12 participants del programa W@WS en tres moments al llarg de la intervenció. A partir de les dades generades qualitativament mitjançant un anàlisi temàtic, els treballadors del grup intervenció (n=88) varen completar una enquesta per identificar el grau d’ús de les estratègies. Els resultats varen mostrar les tasques de treball més actives i l’augment de la intensitat caminant, com les estratègies més utilitzades. Les reunions actives i els grups de caminar a l’hora del dinar varen ser les menys utilitzades a causa la manca de temps i les normes culturals inherents als llocs de treball. Registrar el nombre de passes i el temps assegut va ser el factor facilitador més important mentre que tenir una feina basada en tasques d’ordenador va ser la barrera més prevalent. A partir de l’aprenentatge dels dos anteriors estudis, en l’estudi 3, una revisió sistemàtica va estudiar la viabilitat de l’ús dels ‘smartphones’ per mesurar i promoure estils de vida actius. Vint-i-sis articles varen ser inclosos per a la síntesi qualitativa. La fiabilitat en la precisió de mesura dels patrons d’activitat física i comportament sedentari va ser del 52-100%. Només cinc estudis varen avaluar els efectes d'intervenció: utilitzant disseny pre-post i un amb grup control. La integració d'un menú d’estratègies per seure’s menys i moure’s més a la feina (W@WS) és efectiu en l'assoliment de canvis petits però sostinguts en el nombre de passes caminant i el temps assegut ocupacional. Degut al potencial dels ‘smartphones’ per mesurar patrons d´activitat física i influir en estils de vida actius, futurs estudis amb millor disseny haurien d´avaluar l´efectivitat d´aquests dispositius en intervencions de reducció del temps assegut en els llocs de treball.
Sitting too much and moving too little affects the development of many chronic diseases. Office workplaces are key settings to reduce and break up occupational sitting by replacing sedentary time with step counts. Therefore, the aim of the thesis was to investigate the impact of an intervention to reduce occupational sitting time and increase physical activity in Spanish office workers. Study One used a quasi-experimental pre-post comparison design at six Spanish university campuses (n=264). The intervention consisted of a web page that provide ecologically based strategies to progressively increase baseline step counts through incidental movement, short and long walks, and higher step count frequency and intensity. Using a linear mixed model analyses, findings identified a significant interaction for self-reported occupational sitting, daily step counts and waist circumference. Study Two conducted semi-structured interviews (n=12) throughout the intervention. Workers who finished the intervention (n=88) completed a survey rating the extent to which ‘sit less, move more’ strategies were used and those factors that enabled or limited strategy uptake. Findings indicated that ‘active work tasks’ and ‘increases in walking intensity’ were the strategies most frequently used. ‘Sitting time and step count logging’ was the most important enabler of behaviour change while ‘screen based work’ was the most significant barrier limiting the uptake of strategies. Progressing the learning of the previous studies, Study Three systematically reviewed evidence on smartphones and their viability for measuring and influencing physical activity. Twenty-six articles were included in the review. Measurement accuracy was moderate-to-excellent and smartphone strategies to influence physical activity tended to be ad-hoc. Five articles assessed physical activity intervention effects; and only one was focused on workplace setting. W@WS was effective in achieving small but sustained changes in occupational sitting and step counts by facilitating the uptake of a menu of ‘sit less and move more’ strategies, that can overcome office work environmental barriers. New smartphone technology needs to be a central feature of ICT based interventions that target occupational sitting and physical activity given the novel and engaging capabilities these devices provide for measuring and influencing behaviour change in real time.

Nowadays, sustainability in general and energy-efficiency in specific have become very populardue to environmental issues which can be directly traced back to a wasteful lifestyle of currentgenerations. Therefore, the European Commission specified European Union-wide targets andpolicy objectives in order to achieve a cut in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels by atleast 40% and at least 32,5% improvement in energy-efficiency until 2030 with an option toupward the values by 2023.The literature review of this study showed that former research mainly chose an overallperspective about systems which support people and organizations in living more sustainablywithout covering a specific topic and without elaborating on a concept for a specific use-case.Most of the studies examined technology in regard to a piece of hardware which is integratedinto an existing environment (e.g. household), where no continuous interaction of its users isnecessary. Furthermore, none of it addressed how an organization, along (and in tightcooperation) with its members, can become more sustainably by implementing a technology—where technology refers to an app (software)—which enables employees to live moresustainably at the workplace.In order to tangle the identified gap, the author of this study created a concept of an app whichcan optimize a utilization of office spaces. The aim of this app is to group colleagues togetherin offices according to their project, team or previous seating habits in order to avoidunnecessary heating, air-conditioning and lighting of unused rooms (e.g. pool offices,conference rooms). As an organization should not just create a guideline to which everyemployee must stick to, this study elaborates on possible prompts and constraints (e.g.employees which have concerns about privacy). To achieve that, a web-based survey wasconducted in Germany in order to evaluate the hypotheses emerged from the literature review.From this aim, the research question ‘Which elements prompt and constrain employees to adoptan app that addresses optimal office utilization?’ emerged.Notwithstanding the thoroughly conducted literature review and the emerged hypotheses, noneof the stated hypotheses could have been confirmed and verified.

Abstract (sommario):
This report describes the purpose, design, development and analysis of SQLTips, an online instructional delivery framework and set of instructional modules relating to advanced features and performance tuning of Oracle's Structured Query Language (SQL). SQLTips was developed using Wiki, server-side software that allows users to edit web pages with almost any browser. The report includes a literature review of existing SQL instructional materials and a review of instructional theory. The report also includes a description of the formative evaluation process and results. These results show that SQLTips is easy and enjoyable to use. Based on a scale of 1 to 7 with 7 being the most positive, the 10 modules comprising SQLTips averaged a 6.1 for ease of use and a 6.2 for enjoyability. Posttest results also showed an average increase of 46% upon completion of the instruction. The report also contains a critique of the project.

A comprehensive crisis management system must be ready to operate on a moment's notice and in the midst of an onslaught of information. Within the crisis incident, the management of information may be characterized by magnitude and urgency as well as by preciseness and uncertain reliability. Described as rapidly changing, high risk, and non-routine, crisis incidents challenge the mandates of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to protect and to share information. Complicating the development of a crisis system are security constraints imposed on the information technology (IT) infrastructure by crisis participants such as the FBI. Constraints circumvent collaborative initiatives fundamental to crisis response efforts. For example, mandates to secure information may inhibit access to critical, real-time, decision-making data and thereby result in additional danger and damage due to limitations placed on analytical processes affecting recovery efforts. The author addressed the aforementioned issues confronting an FBI field office (FO) during a crisis response effort. A single-case study analyzing the implementation of IT by the Columbia FO during a crisis incident was conducted. Results of this study indicated that IT used by the Columbia FO during a crisis incident had a positive impact on FBI crisis response operations. The results further indicated that strict IT security controls placed upon FBI systems effect how technologies such as wireless local area networks (WLANs) are implemented to support the investigative processes during a crisis incident. The outcomes from this research showed an increase in information exchange capability through the use of WLANs. Since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a rural field in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001 , the FBI has been undergoing a transformation from an investigative agency to an investigative and intelligence agency. These changes include the use of IT for meeting the renewed emphasis on information exchange. The major contribution of this study is that it provides a comprehensive analysis of IT used by an FBI FO and the potential of WLAN technology in support of crisis responders. This study also provides recommendations on how a WLAN pilot project could be initiated within a FO crisis response.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: e-Governance refers to the utilisation of technology to improve on service delivery, sharing of information, client participation as well as to advance government through the transformation of its internal and external relationships (Shilubane, 2001:40).e-Governance further implies that government disseminates information and renders services to the public through “electronic means” (Manohar, Pulapa and Mellam, 2009:243). On the other hand, e-government is not entirely about electronic service delivery, but part of the continuous restructuring of government to ensure participation from its partners for improved efficacy and success. Therefore e-government is participatory in nature when implemented correctly. This study assesses and evaluates the current infrastructure and current e-initiatives of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) Regional Office Western Cape and the extent to which the agency and its customers are ready to adopt e-government. The e-Governance Road Map (ERM) developed by Ernst & Young India for the New Delhi government was used to guide the researcher to assess the level of e-readiness of the SASSA Regional Office Western Cape. The Information and Communication Technology manager and customer care manager of the SASSA Regional Office Western Cape were interviewed and the beneficiaries of SASSA were requested to participate in the completion of questionnaires. The study found that the customers of SASSA were not as interested in electronic services as in mobile services such as reminders and notifications through short message service (SMS). There are, however, several impediments at SASSA such as an adoption of e-government and m-government, low budget for information and communication technology (ICT) as well as to conduct research among a larger group of SASSA customers. The study mainly recommends that the SASSA Regional Office Western Cape conduct a research study on a larger scale than this research study and to determine the needs of customers in respect of e-services and m-services. Should the agency decide to conduct an e-readiness assessment, the National e-Government Plan (NeGP) of India could be a useful guideline for the implementation of e-governance. The research study strongly recommends that SASSA develops a capacity-building roadmap for the successful implementation of e-governance.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: e-Regering verwys na die benutting van tegnologie om te verbeter op dienslewering, die deel van inligting, die kliënte deelname te versterk, sowel as om die regering te bevorder deur die transformasie van interne en eksterne verhoudings (Shilubane,2001:40). e-Regering impliseer verder dat die regering inligting versprei en dienste lewer aan die publiek deur middel van "elektroniese metodes" (Manohar, Pulapa en Mellam, 2009:243). Aan die ander kant, e-regering het nie slegs betrekking tot elektroniese dienslewering nie, maar sluit ook in die deurlopende herstrukturering van die regering om deelname van sy vennote te verseker om doeltreffendheid en sukses te bewerkstellig. e-Regering word dus as deelnemend beskou wanneer dit korrek geïmplementeer word. Hierdie studie bepaal en evalueer die huidige infrastruktuur en e-inisiatiewe van die Suid Afrikaanse Agentskap vir Maatskaplike Sekerheid (SAAMS) Streekkantoor Wes-Kaap en die mate waarin die agentskap en sy kliënte gereed is om e-regering aan te neem. Die e-regering kaart wat ontwikkel is deur Ernst en Young Indië vir die Nieu-Delhi regering was gebruik as riglyn om die vlak van e-gereedheid van die SAAMS Streekkantoor Wes-Kaap te bepaal. Onderhoude was gevoer met die Inligting en Kommunikasie tegnologiebestuurder en die kliëntediensbestuurder van die SAAMS Streekkantoor Wes-Kaap en die begunstigdes van SAAMS was versoek om deel te neem in die voltooiing van vraelyste. Die studie het bevind dat die kliënte van SAAMS nie werklik belangstel in elektroniese dienste nie, maar inteendeel aan mobiele dienste, onder andere kennisgewings deur middel van 'n kort boodskap diens. Daar is egter verskeie hindernisse wat die aanvaarding van e-regering en m-regering bemoeilik soos byvoorbeeld 'n lae begroting vir inligting en kommunikasie tegnologie (IKT) asook om navorsing te doen onder 'n groter groep van SAAMS kliënte. Die studie beveel hoofsaaklik aan dat SAAMS Streekkantoor Wes-Kaap 'n navorsingsprojek doen op 'n groter skaal as hierdie navorsing en die behoeftes van kliënte ten opsigte van e-dienste en m-dienste te bepaal. Indien die agentskap besluit om 'n e-gereedheid assessering uit te voer, word die Nasionale e-Regering Plan (NeGP) van Indië aan beveel as 'n nuttige riglyn vir die implementering van e-regering. Die navorsing beveel sterk aan dat SAAMS 'n vermoë-opbouplan vir die suksesvolle implementering van e-regering ontwikkel.

Projects are highly critical to the survival and business continuity of any organisation. These include many IT projects that are highly important for effectively and efficiently managing business processes, data, information, and knowledge to achieve organisational goals. Success of any project is dependent on many factors, ranging from technical, organisational, and behavioural factors. The main objective of this research is to investigate and develop the success model of IT projects in Saudi Arabian public organisations from the CIO perspectives. Accordingly, this research seeks to develop the research conceptual framework of IT project success, by identifying the relevant critical success factors (CSF) of IT projects, identifying the criteria for project success (PSC), examining the measurement model through relationship between CSF and PSC, and subsequently examining the possible relationships between the focus variables (CSF and PSC) and CIO demographics, organisational, and IT characteristics. To achieve these objectives, the research employs deductive approach using questionnaire surveys method, and utilization of both descriptive and inferential analyses. The literature review and exploratory analysis phase, assisted the researcher to develop the research conceptual framework by identifying the shortlisted CSF constructs. These CSFs are: top management support and commitment, strategic planning, project management, project team competency, communication management, stakeholders’ management, partners and suppliers management, and training and education. The PSC constructs are identified with six items comprising of criteria from conventional project management (triple constraint) and IS success model. The factor analysis led the criteria to be categorized into project short term success called project management success (PMS) and long-term success called project success (PS). In the next analysis phase, descriptive analysis was performed to identify the characteristics of organisations (type, size), IT (governance, budget), the CIOs such age, gender, CIO type, etc. Subsequently, the reliability test was performed to ensure the reliability and validity of the constructs measured in the study using structural modelling (PLS). Accordingly, the effect of CIO characteristics on the CSF and PSC was checked using ANOVA, and the results indicate that most of the characteristics have weak or no significant influence with either CSF or PSC. Therefore, these demographic characteristics are not moderating the effect of CSF and PSC in the analysis that follows. Further analysis using the PLS bootstrap procedure was conducted to test the project success model by verifying the measurement model as well as the impact of CSF (independent variables) on PSC (dependent variables). The results show that top management support, project management availability and stakeholder management had significant effect on the project success (PS). Whereas, project management availability also led to project success through the short-term project management success (PMS). Both PS and PMS are considered important and significant criteria for project success. The results also indicate that there is a strong reliability of the measurement model, as well as a strong contribution of the composite of all the eight factors in project success. Such A significant result is also attributed to a few critical success factor constructs, which are predominantly by top management support, project management availability and stakeholder management availability. Findings from this research are considered highly important as few researchers have investigated project success from the CIOs point of view. Their collective perceptions can be used more objectively and accurately by organisations to ensure the success of IT projects and to ensure the success of their IT strategic goals.

Architecture-Engineering-Construction industry has recently been altering the ways of managing its resources. Knowledge is considered to be among the most precious of these resources. Knowledge is a critical factor in choosing the right projects, preparing the winning bids and successfully realizing the projects. It is also a critical factor for organizations because of the fact that - due to its nature that it exists as tacit or explicit, or in between - it is hard to record and reuse. This study investigates the knowledge management issue in the practice of architecture. Face-to-face interviews have been carried out with 15 architectural offices in Ç
ankaya district of Ankara. The subject domain is assumed to be experiencing problems such as managing knowledge at a strategic level. This is due to the facts that the amount and importance of tacit knowledge is significant and communication of this knowledge to other parties is the responsibility of the architectural partners. The survey found out that management of architectural knowledge is considered to be beneficial for the overall productivity of architectural offices. However, challenges such as lack of standard procedures and low profit margins in the AEC industry render this activity to be less effective on profit and innovation in design.

The well-known concept of a Project Manager managing an I.T. project in relative isolation is no longer a viable option for organisations that are running numerous projects simultaneously. Due to the enormous costs and risks involved in many of these projects, there needs to be a means to ensure success. This has led to the establishment of the concept of a Project Management Office (PMO). An autonomous business unit that is responsible for managing all projects within an organisation. The need for a Project Management Office (PMO) to effectively manage multiple projects is becoming more and more accepted worldwide. The benefits of a PMO are well documented, but whether these benefits will apply to organisations within the NMM area needed to be investigated. A detailed analysis of the benefits of Project Management and in particular a PMO, have been investigated by means of a literature study. An investigation into the effectiveness of PMO’s in South Africa in general, was conducted by means of a survey targeted at a group of I.T. Project Managers located in all the major centres. A further survey was conducted among local I.T. managers to determine their current level of success and their expectations for the future. When reviewing the expectations of local I.T. management against the performance of Project Managers that are currently operating within PMOs, it is clear that organisations within the NMM area are in need of PMO’s and would certainly benefit from their establishment.

This research report serves as an empirical investigation into the utilization of information technology to support information and knowledge management in law firms, as well as an attempt to design an information and knowledge management model for law firms. Members of the legal profession attached to law firms in the Polokwane City were investigated to find out how optimally they utilize information and communication technologies to support information and knowledge management in their daily operations. The research indicated that there are several ways in which information technology could be used to support the creation, organization, and transfer of information and knowledge in law firms, for the benefit of both lawyers and their clients . In order to provide for an empirical basis for this research, a survey research method, through the use of the questionnaires and interviews, was conducted, followed by a detailed content analysis of law firm websites. An in-depth literature review on the utilization of information technology to support information and knowledge management in law firms was also carried out to determine the findings of other studies that have been conducted elsewhere on the current topic. The results of this research showed that lawyers attached to law firms in the city of Polokwane appear to be non-users of information technology in as far as information and knowledge management is concerned. Most of the members of the law firms in the city seem to be utilizing information technology for basic purposes such as word processing, legal research, client billing, and communication through the e-mail. Other information and knowledge management tools, such as intranets, extranets and web portals, appear not to be utilized by most of the law firms in the city. Based on the findings of this research project, an information and knowledge network model, in a form of Wireless Local Area Network for the law firms in the Polokwane City, is proposed. This network could be utilized by law firms operating in the city to deposit, organize, retrieve, and share information and knowledge collaboratively through the use of information technology. Factors that should be taken into consideration in attempting to implement the proposed model are also discussed. At the end of the research report, some recommendations on encouraging lawyers to utilize information technology optimally are provided, together with recommendations for future research.

Environmental certification systems has, apart from improving the environment, contributed to buildings with a better indoor air quality. The realization of this has led to the next focus in the built environment, building for occupant health and wellbeing. It is recognized that if buildings are designed with the occupant health and wellbeing at center, it increases employee productivity and reduce absenteeism, which in turn yields economic benefits for a business. This thesis project is set out to investigate how building for occupant health and wellbeing can be done in Swedish office buildings. The project is partly based on the relatively new WELL Building Standard, a tool for certifying, measuring and monitoring the functions of a building in terms of health and wellbeing. The largest part of the project is the analysis, where WELL Building Standard is compared to Swedish legislation as well as the Swedish environmental certification system Miljöbyggnad. A literature study is also included in order to see how the health situation looks like in Sweden, and what aspects are the most important to highlight in the scope of this thesis.  The thesis project is a pilot study of the health and wellbeing in Swedish offices and it shows that Swedish legislation includes a large number of issues set forth in WELL Building Standard. In some cases, Swedish legislation goes quite a bit further than WELL and in some cases Swedish projects can gather inspiration from WELL in order to build even healthier. Miljöbyggnad also fulfills some of the subjects presented in WELL.  As WELL Building Standard is a very extensive system, not all parts of it could be included in the analysis of this project. There are a lot of further research that needs to be conducted before drawing too general conclusions on how Swedish projects perform on the aspects of health and wellbeing. Generally, WELL is a useful system if a project intends to be as healthy as can be, even though the project does not use it to be certified. The system provides the building owners with arguments they can use to communicate how the building may benefit health and wellbeing to the tenants, as WELL puts the human at center rather than the building.
Miljöcertifieringar har, utöver att bidra till en bättre miljö, bidragit till att byggnader fått bättre inomhusklimat. Upptäckten av detta har lett till nästa fokus i den byggda miljön, att bygga hälsosamt för människorna som lever i byggnaden. Det är erkänt att om byggnader är planerade och byggda med människornas hälsa och välmående i fokus så ökar de anställdas produktivitet och frånvaron minskar, vilket i sin tur bidrar med ekonomiska fördelar för företag. Målet med denna masteruppsats är att undersöka hur svenska kontorsbyggnader kan planeras och byggas med hälsa och välmående i fokus. Projektet är delvis baserat på det amerikanska systemet WELL Building Standard, som är relativt ny på den svenska marknaden. Det är ett system för certifiering, mätning och övervakning av en byggnads funktioner inom områdena hälsa och välmående. Den största delen av uppsatsen utgörs av analysen, där WELL jämförs med svensk lagstiftning samt det svenska miljöcertifieringssystemet Miljöbyggnad. En litteraturstudie är också inkluderad för att undersöka hur hälsoläget ser ut i Sverige och vilka aspekter av hälsa och välmående som är viktigast att betona inom omfattningen av detta projekt.   Projektet är en pilotstudie om hälsa och välmående i svenska kontorsbyggnader och den visar att svensk lagstiftning innehåller ett stort antal frågor som presenteras i WELL Building Standard. I några fall så går den svenska lagstiftningen steget längre än kraven i WELL och i vissa fall så finns inspiration att hämta från standarden för svenska projekt som vill bygga mer hälsosamt. Miljöbyggnad uppfyller också en del krav som presenteras i WELL.  WELL Building Standard är ett väldigt omfattande system, och därför kunde inte alla delar ur systemet inkluderas i analysen i detta projekt. Det är en del framtida forskning som krävs innan alltför generella slutsatser kan dras om hur svenska projekt presterar i fråga om hälsa och välmående. Generellt så är WELL ett bra system att använda om ett projekt siktar på att bli så hälsosamt som möjligt, även om projektet inte använder systemet för certifiering. Systemet ger byggnadens ägare argument de kan använda för att kommunicera hur byggnaden bidrar till hälsa och välmående till och för hyresgästerna, eftersom WELL sätter människan i centrum istället för byggnaden.

The technology landscape has changed dramatically over the past three decades. Organisations encounter extreme difficulty in managing their core capabilities which are enabled by technology. In light of this, organisations require strategic individuals who can continually carry the organisation to the new s-curve which will afford them the competitive advantage. The purpose of this study is to assist the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and the c-level suite executives to effectively and appropriately position the CTO in an orgainsation. This will prevent Chief Information Officer (CIO) / CTO distortion and ensure that the CTO is being evaluated fairly. The findings of academics, as is evident in the literature review, underscore the essence of my finding that the position of the CTO in an organisation is not fully understood. The researcher has revised the current CTO models to develop the new ‘CTO TIE model’. This research highlights the viewpoint that the positioning of the CTO role will be influenced by two key variables; whether the CTO reports to the CIO or CEO? and whether the company is internally or externally technology focused? This research explores the barriers and limitations of the interaction between building development processes in an attempt of an integrated decision support approach to improve building design for effective maintenance in the field of office building automation. Extensive coverage of literature and practice in office building industry over the last two decades indicates a wide diffusion and application of the information and communication technologies (ICT). While this has resulted in the adoption of advanced system integration in buildings, system redundancy and excessive expenditures are causing a major impact on the overall efficiency and has burdened building owners and occupiers with escalating maintenance costs. This phenomenon stimulates and warrants the re-examination of integrated building development, not just on system integration but also on the interdisciplinary development process integration particularly linking design and maintenance. Studies in this field revealed existing problems such as the inherent professional fragmentation, lack of historical information and service data, the first cost mentality of owners and developers, difficulties in forecasting future conditions and changes early in the design stage. With extensive use of qualitative information, this situation presents a great potential for the development of a decision support system exploring the communication and integration of design and maintenance phases, which has been one of the primary objectives of this research. In addition to literature studies, a questionnaire survey and a case study to identify industry concerns, feasible solutions, and practical procedure oriented approaches through knowledge extractions were carried out. A set of guidelines, a checklist for its implementation and prototype system for computerized decision support to design and maintenance of building automation systems were also produced. These strategic approaches to balance design and maintenance will help facilitate appropriate decision making in the early design stage for sustainable maintenance of buildings.

One of the important branches of government and vital to the community, police agencies are organizations that have high usage rates of information technology systems since they are in the intelligence sector and thus have information incentives. Not only can information technologies develop intra- and inter-relationships of law enforcement agencies, but they also improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the police officers and agencies without adding additional costs. Thus, identifying the factors that influence the police officers' adoption of information technology can help predict and determine how information technology will contribute to the social organization of policing in terms of effectiveness and efficiency gains. A research framework was developed by integrating three different models, theory of planned behavior (TPB), technology acceptance theory (TAM), and diffusion of innovation theory (DOI) while adding two other factors, facility and voluntariness, to better determine the factors affecting the implementation and adoption of the POLNET software system used by the Turkish National Police (TNP). The integrated model used in this study covers not only basic technology acceptance factors, but also the factors related to policing. It also attempts to account for the factors of cultural differences by considering the important aspects of Turkish culture. A cross sectional survey was conducted among TNP officers using the POLNET system. The LISREL 8.5® analysis for the hypothesized model resulted in a good model fit; 13 of the 15 hypotheses were supported.

Implementation of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and recovery in IT spending after the dot-com bust in 2002 have enhanced the Chief Information Officer's (CIO's) role and needed skills. The CIO significantly influences strategy implementation and firm performance through the management of IT resmyces. I posit that firms must appoint a CIO with an appropriate background (technical versus business) that is aligned with their strategic positioning (differentiation versus cost leadership) for IT resmyces to support the firm's strategy. I find that differentiators (cost leaders) are more likely to appoint a CIO with a technical (business) background. Notably, firms announcing aligned CIO appointments (technical CIOs for differentiators and business CIOs for cost leaders) have superior investor reactions. Second, I take the first step to understand the impact of CIO's education on determining their compensation. I find that CIO education characteristics are significant determinants of CIO compensation, addressing the ongoing debate regarding the desired CIO education. Furthermore, drawing on Agency theory, I separately examine salary and bonus due to their divergent roles in rewarding and incentivizing ability and effort. My findings suggest that CIO education characteristics strongly determine CIO salary whereas firm financial performance measures strongly determine CIO bonus, consistent with salary rewarding CIO ability and bonus incentivizing CIO effort. Third, I investigate the relationship between data breaches and Chief Information Officer (CIO) turnover. Executive turnover literature finds that CEOs and CFOs turnover when they fail to meet financial performance expectations. Unlike CEOs and CFOs, CIOs are directly responsible for IT performance and I argue that CIOs are more likely to turnover when they fail to meet their performance expectation as reflected by data breaches. Following previous work, I classify system breaches into system glitch, criminal attack, human error and other. I document that system glitches increase the likelihood of CIO turnover by two-fold. Furthermore, I find that the impact of system glitches on CIO turnover lasts for two years.

The construction industry is reputedly lethargic to adopt innovation and, in particular, new technology. To date it has not readily embraced Information Technology (IT) given its reluctance to recognise the many potential efficiencies and competitive advantages afforded by this technology. Where IT in the form of Information Systems (IS) has been introduced the likelihood of failure and/or inefficiencies is large considering the historic inability of IS to deliver on its potential. Furthermore, this performance of IS is arguably dependent on the role of the Chief Executive Officer in the construction organisation.This study examines the performance of IS in the construction firms and the role played by the CEO in that performance. The study has four main objectives; namely: (1) to determine the role of the CEO of construction companies relative to IS governance and performance; (2) to determine the role of the CEO of construction companies in determining the structure of IS to strategically support the company; (3) to examine the relationship between the CEO and Chief Information Officer (CIO) and the impact of this relationship on the performance of IS in a construction firm;and (4) to examine the importance of information processing and knowledge management of construction companies.To achieve these objectives, the literature on IS performance in the organisation was reviewed; a structured self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted of a sample of executive managers drawn from 9 construction companies; the data was analysed; the findings discussed against the background of the literature reviewed.The key findings of this study indicate that most of CEOs of construction companies consider IS performance as of strategic importance in their organisations with respect to information processing and knowledge management; and acknowledge the important role of the CIO in IS governance and information management. Furthermore, the CEOs also acknowledge their role in organisational design, and the structuring of IS to strategically support their companies. Drawing from the responses of a sample of CEOs of contracting firms in the Western Cape province of South Africa there appears to be a direct correlation between the role of the CEO and IS governance and performance.

Telecommuting is becoming an increasingly popular trend in the modern workforce. Among the growing number of teleworkers are engineers, a profession where communication is a necessity. This study employs a phenomenological research approach to understand and describe the ways in which information communication technology (ICT) affects teleworking engineers’ interpersonal communication in the workplace and perceptions of isolation in social and organizational contexts. Uses and gratifications theory and media richness theory were used to better understand teleworkers’ selection and use of ICT. The findings revealed six themes: emotional impact, workplace relationships, information communication technology in the workplace, the nature of telework, telework and connectivity, and the organizational role in telework. This study contributes to communication research by adding to the growing body of knowledge about the influence of telework on workplace communication and relationships from the perspective of a niche population, engineers.

The dearth of women in executive positions within the field of information technology (IT) has been studied extensively in the corporate sector. That is not the case within higher education, despite the data collected showing that women attain the top executive role - that of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) - at much better rates than their corporate counterparts. Given this discrepancy, as well as the importance of technology in today's society, research was needed into the structural factors contributing to women's executive attainment in higher education IT organizations. Using a sequential explanatory mixed methods design, this dissertation study compared women and men higher education CIOs along a variety of individual and organizational characteristics, and examined elements related to women's ability to attain the CIO role. The study combined quantitative descriptive data on higher education CIOs, gathered via a web-based questionnaire and analyzed for significant differences between women and men in the population, with women CIOs' qualitative explanations of the quantitative findings via semi-structured interviews. 188 women and men (38 women and 150 men) participated in the questionnaire, and nine women who filled it out participated in the semi-structured interviews. All participants were higher education CIOs working at EDUCAUSE member institutions. Integrated findings from this study suggest that though few demographic differences exist between women and men in the population, higher education IT culture is based upon masculine norms, and as such, perpetuates biases against women leaders in the profession. Despite cultural norms that potentially dissuade women from working in the field, a number of environmental characteristics emerged associated with women's ability to secure the CIO position. These included stimulating work that is connected to the mission of higher education; flexible work options available at different points in IT employees' careers; the presence of women executives in academic institutions; and a nationally based professional development community focused on mentoring future generations of CIOs

The high energy use in the European building stock is attributable to the large share of old buildings with poor energy performance. Energy renovation of buildings is therefore vital in the work towards energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact in the EU. Yet, the strategies and energy system implications of this work have not been made clear, and the rate of building renovation is currently very low. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the economic and environmental aspects of energy renovation strategies, with two main objectives: Renovation of Swedish district heated multi-family houses, including life-cycle cost and environmental analysis and impact on the local energy system; Renovation of European residential and office buildings, including life-cycle cost and environmental analysis and influence of climatic conditions. Buildings typical for the respective regions and the period of construction 1945-1970 were simulated, in order to determine the feasibility and energy saving potential of energy renovation measures in European climates. A variety of systems for heating, cooling and ventilation were studied, as well as solar energy systems, with focus on heat pumps, district heating, low-temperature heating systems and air heat recovery. Compared to normal building renovation, energy renovation can often reduce the life-cycle costs and environmental impact. In renovation of typical European office buildings, as well as Southern European multi-family houses, more ambitious renovation levels can also be more profitable. Exhaust air heat pumps can be cost-effective complements in district heated multi-family houses, while ventilation with heat recovery is more expensive but also more likely to reduce the primary energy use. From a system perspective, simple exhaust ventilation can reduce the primary energy use in the district-heating plant as much as an exhaust air heat pump, due to the lower electricity use.
Byggnadssektorn står för omkring 40 % av den totala energianvändningen i EU. Den höga energianvändningen i Europeiska byggnader kan till stor del tillskrivas den stora andelen gamla byggnader med dålig energiprestanda. Energirenovering av byggnader, eller energieffektivisering genom renovering, kan därför anses utgöra en central del i arbetet mot EU:s klimat- och energimål för år 2030. Trots detta är det ännu inte helt klarlagt vilka strategier som ska tillämpas för att uppnå detta och hur det påverkar energisystemet, och i nuläget är renoveringstakten fortfarande väldigt låg. Målet med denna avhandling är att undersöka ekonomiska och miljömässiga aspekter av strategier för energirenovering, såväl byggnadsskalsåtgärder som aktiva system, för typiska bostads- och kontorsbyggnader i Sverige och i andra Europeiska regioner. Mer specifikt har arbetet följande två inriktningar: Renovering av svenska, fjärrvärmevärmda flerfamiljshus, inklusive livscykelkostnadsanalys och livscykelmiljöanalys samt påverkan på det lokala energisystemet; Renovering av Europeiska bostads- och kontorsbyggnader, inklusive livscykelkostnadsanalys och livscykelmiljöanalys samt påverkan av klimatförutsättningar. Byggnader typiska för respektive region och byggnadsperioden 1945-1970 modellerades och användes i simuleringar för att fastställa den övergripande möjligheten och energibesparingspotentialen för olika renoveringsåtgärder i Europeiska klimat. En rad system för värme, kyla och ventilation studeras, samt solenergisystem, med fokus på värmepumpar, fjärrvärme, lågtemperaturvärmesystem och värmeåtervinning ur frånluft. Jämfört med renovering av byggnader utan energieffektiviseringsåtgärder kan energirenovering i många fall minska såväl livscykelkostnaden som miljöpåverkan. Vid renovering av typiska Europeiska kontorsbyggnader lönar det sig mer att renovera ner till ett uppvärmningsbehov på 25 kWh/(m²∙år) än 45 kWh/(m²∙år), då den minskade kostnaden för köpt energi väger upp den ökade kostnaden för isolering. För flerfamiljshus i södra Europa kan mer ambitiösa mål gällande värmebehov också vara lönsamma, medan en mer måttlig nivå är lämplig för småhus. Solvärme- eller solelsystem kan användas för att minska byggnaders miljöpåverkan. Utan subventioner eller inmatningstariff för överskottsel kan det bli svårt att få lönsamhet i dessa system för kontorsbyggnader i Nord- och Centraleuropa samt för småhus. För flerfamiljshus kan solenergisystem dock sänka den totala livscykelkostnaden, såväl i södra som i norra Europa. Värmeåtervinning och lågtemperaturvärmesystem visade sig båda ha större inverkan i kallare klimat. Lågtemperaturvärmesystem förbättrar värmefaktorn för värmepumpar, i synnerhet när uppvärmningsbehovet är stort i förhållande till varmvattenbehovet. Vid renovering av byggnader med vattenburna radiatorer kan konvertering till tilluftsradiatorer sänka framledningstemperaturen i värmesystemet. I svenska flerfamiljshus kan frånluftsvärmepump vara ett kostnadseffektivt komplement till fjärrvärme, medan från- och tilluftsventilation med värmeåtervinning är dyrare men mer sannolikt att ge en minskad primärenergianvändning. I ett systemperspektiv kan frånluftsventilation utan värmeåtervinning minska primärenergianvändningen i fjärrvärmeverket lika mycket som en frånluftsvärmepump, tack vare den lägre elanvändningen.

As the Department of Defense (DoD) begins transitioning to face the new global threats of terrorism, the new requirements of a refocused National Strategy will inherently force the DoD to transform its processes in support of the new National Strategy. In the next few years the technology used to support the DoD will continue to grow with the new demands thus, the DoD will have achieve transformation at all levels enterprise-wide. "Transformation" or radical change has been occurring successfully in the corporate business world for over 25 years and through this transformation the e-business technology has created an exponential growth in the knowledge producing information exchange systems. As the DoD looks to the e-business world for methodologies and solutions to capture this knowledge and manage it, it must also look for a surrogate definition of value or revenue that can be used as a measurement of return on the knowledge. This thesis will seek to define this value by presenting the e-business methodologies called Return on Knowledge (ROK), Knowledge Value Analysis (KVA) and Business Process Reengineering (BPR) by developing a web-enabled environment called the Transformation Information Technology Enabler (TITE) as a DoD transformation solution.

У дипломній роботі проведено детальне дослідження такого поняття як «проектне адміністрування». Розглянуто темпи розвитку проектної діяльності в Україні та закордоном. Проаналізовані слабкі сторони відносно нового виду управління в країні та запропоновані варіанти їх вирішення на основі використання досвіду закордонних компаній. Досліджено методики ведення проектів, пов'язаних з інформаційними технологіями (ІТ). Наведені дані про два найпоширеніших методи – традиційний (каскадний) та еджайльний. Досліджено поняття проектного бюджетування, встановлено послідовний ряд дій при формуванні бюджету технічного проекту на майбутній рік. Запропоновано ряд рекомендацій щодо ефективного формування бюджету з урахуванням будь-яких непередбачених ризиків.
В дипломной работе проведено детальное исследование такого понятия как «проектное администрирование». Рассмотрены темпы развития проектной деятельности в Украине и за рубежом. Проанализированы слабые стороны относительно нового вида управления в стране и предложены варианты их решения на основе использования опыта зарубежных компаний. Исследованы методики ведения проектов, связанных с информационными технологиями (ІТ). Приведены данные о двух самых распространенных методах – традиционном (каскадном) и эджайльном. Исследовано понятие проектного бюджетирования, установлен последовательный ряд действий при формировании бюджета технического проекта на будущий год. Предложен ряд рекомендаций по эффективному формированию бюджета с учетом любых непредвиденных рисков.
A detailed study of such concepts as "project administration" was conducted in this diploma work. The rates of project activities development in Ukraine and abroad are considered. The weaknesses of a relatively new type of management are analyzed and options for their solution based on the experience of foreign companies are proposed. Methods of conducting projects related to information technology (IT) are investigated. The data about two most common methods – the traditional (cascade) and agile – is provided. The concept of project budgeting has been investigated, a sequential series of actions in the formation of a technical project budget for the next year have been established. A number of recommendations have been proposed for effective budget formation, taking into account any unforeseen risks.

This thesis attempts to show the contribution of Geographic Information System to urban planning process in Turkey. GIS can enhance the planning system by providing an access to accurate, reliable and update geographical information, producing alternatives according to the scenario and ensuring participation in the evaluation of the alternatives. This is the high level contribution of GIS for the enhancement of planning. The contribution can occur
if certain conditions are sustained such as establishment of geographical data provision system among public institutions. Obviously, these are connected with available technical and social infrastructure. Although, there is not a digital infrastructure system among the public institutions, several general directorates have started to provide some geographical information in their works. These efforts should be increased in quality and quantity. From the planning point of view, we argue that these are not even at satisfying level to work with the GIS in the plan-making processes. To prove our argument, the use of GIS and technology in the Bank of Provinces and private planning offices are inquired. The results of the thesis study show that the Bank of Provinces is in the transition period for the use of GIS. Private planning offices are in the initial stage and some of them seem unable to adopt themselves if the plan-making process becomes digital, because of the extra costs for them. Therefore, geographical data provision policies among public planning institutions will determine the future development of GIS in the planning process.

In recent years, the impact of global forces such as the increasing pace of technological innovation and the growing affluence of emerging economies has changed the role of Information Technology (IT). New sourcing models and increasing competitive pressure have had a significant effect on the way technologies are delivered and subsequently the role of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) has gradually been migrating from one of a support role to that of playing a crucial part in the execution of corporate strategies. Whilst previous academic studies appear to be focused on the different competencies of the CIO, there have been few studies concerning how CIOs perceive their role and their future. Drawing on the various concepts from role theory, this PhD thesis constitutes the first known study aimed at presenting the role demands, constraints and the choices as perceived by the CIOs. Using a qualitative approach, 25 semi-structured interviews were conducted with both CIOs and senior IT leaders. Empirical evidence highlights the critical importance of role choices in determining what type of CIO an individual will be. It has also enabled the development of two new CIO role models; the Abeyant CIO and the Transmuted CIO. The Abeyant CIO model has been established to help understand the role enactment of CIOs who have not yet made the transition from a manager to a leader. In this scenario, it is asserted that individuals are the recipient of a role that was formulated by the role set, and that this ultimately determines the level of demands and constraints within the individual’s environment. In contrast, the transmuted CIO scenario emphasises that individuals have been through a process of self-reflection and they have made conscious choices throughout their careers that have resulted in approaching the CIO role differently. It is theorised in the transmuted CIO scenario that individuals are not the mere recipient of role set expectations and that they are actively involved in role making.

The protection of assets is an important part of daily life. Currently this is done using a combination of passive security cameras and security officers actively patrolling the premises. However, security officers, being human, are subject to a number of limitations both physical and mental. A security robot would not suffer from these limitations, however currently there are a number of challenges to implementing such a robot. These challenges include navigation in a complex real-world environment, fast and accurate threat detection and threat tracking. Overcoming these challenges is the focus of my research. To that end a small security robot, the CuWITH or Curious WITH,has been developed and is presented in this thesis. The CuWITH utilises a programmable navigation system, curiosity-based threat detection and curiosity-driven threat tracking curiosity to protect a real office environment. In this thesis we will first discuss the CuWITH's system design in detail, with a particular focus on the components and the architectural strategies employed. We then move to a more detailed examination of the mathematical underpinnings of the CuWITHs curiosity based threat detection and curiosity driven threat tracking. The details of the CuWITH's navigation will also be explained. We will then present a number of experiments which demonstrate the effectiveness of the CuWITH. We show that the programmable navigation of the CuWITH, although simple, allows for easy modification of the patrol path without risk to the stability of the system. We will then present the results of both offline and online testing of the CuWITH's curiosity based threat detection. The reaction time and accuracy of the CuWITHs curiosity driven threat tracking will also be illustrated. As a final test the CuWITH is instructed to execute a patrol in a real office environment, with threatening and non-threatening persons present. The results of this test demonstrate all major systems of the CuWITH working together very well and successfully executing the patrol even when moved to a different environment.

Os lançamentos imobiliários recentes adotaram o Home Office em seus prospectos de vendas como mais um atrativo na decisão de compra do cliente, o que pode ser analisado como uma tendência de que o mercado promotor de unidades habitacionais esteja indo de encontro com as necessidades e exigências dos usuários e o Escritório Residencial é uma delas. Em um primeiro momento, este trabalho investiga as inserções dos espaços para o trabalho de escritório nos lançamentos imobiliários com o objetivo de identificar quais os ambientes que cederam área física ou que coexistem com as atividades desta função; e, posteriormente investiga as condições dos postos de trabalho no que se refere a algumas questões ergonômicas, estudando estas condições à luz de parâmetros de conforto pré estabelecidos.
The office work and its activities are mixing with the routine of the domestic life of the great urban centers, stimulated by new communication and information technologies, new modalities of working relationships and the chaotic conditions of urban mobility. The recent real estate launchings had adopted the home office in its sales prospects as one plus attractive in the customers decision of purchase, what it can be analyzed as a trend of that the promotional market of dwelling units target is to supply the necessities and requirements of the users and the home office is one of them. This research investigates the insertions of the spaces for the office work in the residential real estate launchings with the objective to identify to which the environments that had yielded physical area or that they coexist with the activities of this function; and, later investigates the work place conditions, analyzing some human factors questions, comparing these conditions with the comfort standards.

The Chief information officer (CIO) position has been seen as very important to every organization; this includes organizations that have either outsourced   or Insourced their IT function. Various studies have shown that this role emerged as a critical executive position in most organization which helps to shape organizations strategy. CIO has a major responsibility of aligning IT with business strategy that leads to an organization achieving a higher competitive advantage. This  work describeD the various roles of the CIO in organizations with a special focus on IT-business strategy alignment.

Based on our investigations from previous research, case studies and current interviews with CIOs, we were able to see that the CIO roles are shifting from operational to more strategic one. The CIO is seen to be the bridge between IT strategy and business strategy. As a result of this, they have close collaboration with the CEOs in order to be successful in aligning IT strategy to the business objectives. In view of this, the CIO plays the role of both the chief architect who designs future possibilities for business and the technology provocateur (Intelligent officer) that aligns IT with business.

Within the electric power industry, the average company's enterprise system - i.e. the overall system of IT related entities - is today highly complex. Technically, large organizations posses hundreds or thousands of extensively interconnected and heterogeneous single IT systems performing tasks that varies from enterprise resource planning to real-time control and monitoring of industrial processes. Moreover are these systems storing a wide variety of sometimes redundant data, and typically they are deployed on several different platforms. IT does, however, not execute in splendid isolation. Organizationally, the enterprise system embraces business processes and business units using as well as maintaining and acquiring the IT systems. The interplay between the organization and the IT systems are further determined by for instance business goals, ownership and governance structures, strategies, individual system users, documentation, and cost.

Lately, Enterprise Architecture (EA) has evolved with the mission to take a holistic approach to managing the above depicted enterprise system. The discipline's presumption is that architectural models are the key to succeed in understanding and administrating enterprise systems. Compared to many other engineering disciplines, EA is quite immature in many respects. This thesis identifies and elaborates on some important aspects that to date have been overlooked to a large extent. Firstly, the lack of explicit purpose for architectural models is identified. The thesis argues that the concerns of a company's Chief Information Officer (CIO) should guide the rationale behind the development of EA models. In particular, distribution of IT related information and knowledge throughout the organization is emphasized as an important concern uncared for. Secondly, the lack of architectural theory is recognized. The thesis provides examples of how theory, or analysis procedures, could be incorporated into the Enterprise Architecture approach and hereby concretely drive the development of the architectural models. Due to the nature of enterprise systems, EA theories inevitable will be of an indicative character. Finally, in relation to the models as such, three aspects are highlighted. Firstly, the cost of collecting information from the organization to populate models is routinely neglected by the EA community. This expense should be evaluated in relation to the utility of analyses that the information can provide in terms of better informed decision making by the CIO. Secondly, models (and meta-models) must be kept consistent. And thirdly, the design of models is restricted by the limited mental capabilities of the minds of the model users. CIO concerns must consequently be easy to extract from the Enterprise Architecture models.

This research examined opinions of local law enforcement agencies’ patrol officers in the State of Georgia regarding preparedness and expectations for handling of digital evidence. The increased criminal use of technology requires that patrol officers be prepared to handle digital evidence in many different situations. The researcher’s goal was to gain insight into how patrol officers view their preparedness to handle digital evidence as well as their opinions on management expectations regarding patrol officers’ abilities to handle digital evidence. The research focused on identifying whether a gap existed between patrol officers’ opinions of digital evidence and the patrol officers’ views on what management expectations are for patrol officers handling digital evidence. Using a Web-based survey, the researcher collected data from 144 departments, 407 individual patrol officers in four strata across the State of Georgia. The analysis of the data found that most patrol officers handle digital evidence in at least some situations. The patrol officers’ opinions stated that most understood management expectations for handling of digital evidence and felt those expectations were realistic based on the officers’ current knowledge and training; therefore no significant gap was found. The patrol officers state that they need additional training in order to stay up to date with the current and future needs for handling existing and new technology.
