Testo completoThis thesis explores game dynamics and collective performance by alternating between analyses of traditional sports, such as handball, and e-sports, such as DotA2 and OverWatch. The aim is to segment the data processing process into several stages, each providing a specific understanding. By adopting a comparative approach between sport and e-sport, this work not only distinguishes the different stages of data processing, but also offers an overview of (e-)sport analysis. The first contribution is the development of techniques for representing handball matches using dynamic graphs, and the simplification of trajectories in DotA2 using geometric indices. The second contribution focuses on the definition and calculation of performance metrics, essential for machine learning. Expected goal (xG) models for handball and commitment factors in OverWatch have been developed as targets for algorithms. The third contribution is the creation of a tactical observatory dedicated to handball, and the study of geometric configurations in DotA2 that lead to key events. These analyses deepen our understanding of the tactics that influence the course of matches

Testo completoUrban freight transport is a matter of increasing concern in the economic, commercial, social and environmental operations of our cities, due to the constantly increasing growth and urbanization of the civilization. An improved managem ent of the traffic related to the freight transport can have a positive impact in many respects : security, congestion of the road network, noise and air pollution, costs. City Logistics studies the dynamic management of urban freight transport in order to deliver distribution systems solutions that may be suitable for both the community and freight carriers. This thesis originates from the ANR Project MODUM, which proposes a freight distribution system based on a ring of Urban Distribution Centers (UDCs) located in the outskirts of a city. In the first part, this system is studied from both a strategic and a tactical point of view. The Multicommodity-Ring Location Routing Problem (MRLRP) considers long-term decisions, i.e. the installation of the UDCs and the ring connection, without disregarding more tactical aspects. The MRLRP has been tackled by three solution methods, which proved effective on a large set of test instances. In the second part of the thesis, the Vehicle Routing Problem with Intermediate Replenishment Facilities (VRPIRF) is studied. The VRPIRF is a more tactical problem that arises in City Logistics each time both the multi-trip and the multi-depot features, i.e. the possibility for a vehicle to be reloaded at one of a set of facilities, are present. Several exact algorithms, namely two of type Branch&Cut and two of type Branch& Price, have been developed for this problem. computational experiments on benchmark instances taken from the literature have been conducted to assess their performance, leading to very promising results

Testo completoThis thesis explores the application of HTN planning to the animation of an infantry platoon in a real-time simulation software. In order to achieve online planning for nearly 40 soldiers, we show that it is possible to optimize the planner for one HTN domain with a compilation of planning elements into C++ static structures and procedures. Then, we demonstrate that the problem structure lends itself to a combination of HTN planning with abstraction planning, achieved with the modelisation of abstract effects for compound tasks. In some conditions, we can detect those task networks that never lead to any executable solution, and therefore improve the search. Eventually, we show that the problem structure enables to formulate evaluation functions that can be input into a non admissible heuristic search algorithm, and that near optimal solutions can be obtained within a short run-time

Testo completo« Designing is not a profession but an attitude », as de László Moholy-Nagy wrote, is an object and environment growth field, which, both in terms of its practice and that of its theory, is not without some difficulties in its definition. This preliminary finding raises the question of the ways in which producing the artifacts that come to take place — among us — at the heart of a world already designed. While the absence of fixed classification and the non-disciplined attitude, from which the word « design » historically refers, put in crisis — problematically yet nevertheless fruitful — the expectations from the consuming society, the reading of The Practice of everyday Life (De Certeau) opens the possibility of investigating the various procedures of ordinary (and every day) culture, known widely as « ways of operating » or « arts of doing ». In keeping with this idea, the question raised is : what does design concretely do? Where and how does it operate vividly, in a more fundamentally useful manner, than just in an effective and creative way? It's about accepting and even embracing the practices that cross and transcend specific frameworks commonly accepted in places such as offices, firms, media or even by academia; thwarting recognized strategies, and working, incidentally, by « tactical tricks ». Those innumerable anonymous facts have already been apprehended, themed, recovered. A critical consideration in setting a conceptual perspective and historical contexts, considering some cases, should allow to assert the meditation of the designer, but also to authenticate to a wider public, the non-negligible and non-heroic, but always productive part of those ars

Testo completoThese last years, Algeria began an ambitious national plan on housing construction of all types. For example, 1,6 million homes are registered for realization under the five-year period 2015-2019. However and due to lack of skilled labor, companies in charge to build these homes used a workforce from abroad: China, Japan, Spain, Egypt, etc. In front of this situation, it was noticed that the sector of building and public works currently represents about a third of occupational accidents and professional diseases at national scale. However, no indication is provided on the question of emergence of psychosocial risks due to the organization of work. This is why a study was initiated in this direction, of whom the realization of a doctoral thesis in France. This thesis thus consists in acquiring theories on psychosocial risks and those of organizations. To do this, it was necessary in particular to put the accent on history of these risks in Europe and especially in France, the agenda setting on the emergence of psychosocial risks, particularly via the case of suicides and suicide attempts at France Télécom. In this wake and dig on this question, we put two hypotheses of worsening of psychosocial risks. Firstly, psychosocial risks aggravate by imbalance between regulation of control (managerial) too high, and autonomous regulation (by workers who organize their activity of the way which seems the best indicated) in reference to the theory of J.D. Reynaud. In the second place, psychosocial risks aggravate by deficit of organizational democracy of participative form, which joins and completes the first hypothesis. That being said, we indicate that the chapter that we devoted to epistemology (six schemes of intelligibility of J.M. Berthelot, which were taken, amended and operationalized by Pascale De Rozario within the framework of the study of the phenomenon of suicide) allowed us to make the inventory of theories dedicated to psychosocial risks and to evaluate them taking into consideration model which they carry on the relation between organization and individual. It should also be noted that we opted for a constructivist approach, object of the last chapter of the thesis. While starting initially with a top-down approach; we took our review of theoretical literature (J.D. Reynaud, Marie-Hélène Bacqué, Yves Sintomer and others authors) and we confronted it with a practical and managerial review of 4 observatories (observatories analyzed with regard to the contents on diffused psychosocial risks and in the manners of which they diffuse, interpret, clarify the reports between psychosocial risks, organization and managerial regulation of the activity) and then we followed a bottom-up approach. And It's at this moment there that we made constructivism. This last chapter represents our theoretical, methodological and operational proposal once return in Algeria to initiate a national public policy of sensitizing, management and prevention of psychosocial risks, in particular with through the implementation of an observatory of psychosocial risks adapted to the sector of building and public works
Moad, Kamel.
The present manuscript tackles the supply chain forest transportation problem in the context of forestry primary industry. In this context, several risks may affect the forest supply chain: the unpredictable weather conditions (tree falling provoked by major storms); sanitary emergencies (tree pest and diseases); and, diverse commercial circumstances (the variability of market demands). The aforementioned issues motivate the diverse forest sector protagonists (entrepreneurs, forest operators and drivers) to seek support for improving their logistic operations. The aim of this effort is to improve the service quality (offer-demand agreement) diminishing in this way the total costs. Therefore, the main goal of this thesis is the proposal of a novel management model which improves forest-to-mill transport performance. At the same time, the proposed model accounts for the forest sector manners and constraints. The contribution of this thesis is threefold: first a transportation model is developed, later on the transport planning is managed, and finally an optimization procedure is proposed. The thesis results propose a hierarchical planning for the forestry transportation. Two decision levels are suggested: tactic and operational. At a tactic level, a multi-period optimization is considered. The multi-period optimization strategy meets the customer supply demands while minimizes the global transportation activity. Such strategy takes into account the restrictions of the total available transportation means. Moreover, at this level the activity balancing politics may be developed, as well as subcontractors coordination between transport companies. On the other hand, at the operational level, the tactic planning assigned for each transporter is divided so an optimization of the fleet’s transport assignation is done considering the vehicles constraints. The decision process is modelled as a Mixed Linear Programming formulation. The application considers a data set coming from the industry settled at the Aquitaine region in France. The results have shown a significant improvement on the transport capabilities with respect to the conventional transport practices. It is worth to mention that the decision models were designed such that they may be adapted to different context either collaborative or not. In both cases, the tactic planning has a generic purpose, in other words, it is independent of the kind of organization involved, whereas specific organizations are taken into account when planning actors’ activities at the operational level.

Testo completoWhile it is certain that the Mamluk army was one of the best armies of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, the foundations of its power, its mechanisms and its effectiveness are still rather unknown. My subject covers the period beginning with the crusade of Louis IX in Egypt in 648/1250 and ending with the fall of the Kingdom of Armenia in 776/1375. Between these chronological boundaries, I propose an analysis, from a military point of view, of the three main conflicts (those against the Mongols, Franks and Armenians) to which the Bahri Mamluk Sultanate participated, for better highlight the reasons for the success of the Mamluk army and his near invincibility on earth during this period. This study is structured around three axes. In the first, that on strategy, I am interested in the principles that presided over the conduct of war that the Mamluks adopted against their different enemies. In the second, on tactics, I try to highlight the battle tactics that Mamluks practiced on the battlefield and the characteristics of their siege warfare. Finally, in the last, the one on ideology, I deal with jihad. Although this notion is much in demand today, it remains poorly known for the Mamluk era. In addition to the military successes of the Mamluks against the various enemies of Islam, the use of a warlike titulature and martial rhetoric, the important production of treaties of war, furūsiyya and jihad by the scholars, as well as the intense activity and participation of the latter in jihad like Ibn Taymiyya, make the Mamluk period to be considered as a revivification of the ideology of jihad

Testo completoSupply chains are ubiquitous across industries and a considerable effort has been invested in supply chain management techniques over the last decades. In Telecommunications service industries, it often involves repair operations and consequently takes place in a closed-loop supply chain. In this context, supply chain management is concerned with optimally planning movements of faulty parts and spare parts based on a demand forecast and in the face of conflicting objectifs (stock out, storage, repair, transfer). This thesis describes this optimisation problem and based on a case study. Specifically, we consider a tactical planning decision support system. This system depends on a generic modeling of the problem that can be applied on a wide range of supply chains. We present an exact method and a metaheuristic to solve this problem and evaluate our approaches against a variety of instances of different sizes. We also study the ability to emulate specific management policies (e.g., just-in-time replenishment, minimal repair) by weighting the objectives. Finally, we investigate how to apply successive plans generated by the system and study the capability to face forecast uncertainties

Testo completoThis PhD proposes to study children’s cultures and intergenerational relationships by observing foodconsumption. Children’s practices with food, their representations as well as those of their parents on their consumption of food are considered as an observatory of relationships between children and between adults and younger. Developing a qualitative methodology, it is given its rightful place to the children discourses (aged 4 to 12 years) and those of their parents to explore the dynamics of intra and intergenerational relationships. At the intersection of sociology of childhood and food, this work focuses on analyzing the construction of children’s cultures and of belongings to different age groups. It also questions the effects of social norms and educational patterns regulating children consumption of food. Gender relations, social origins and spaces of residence are important factors that influence these logics. Transversely, this research is an opportunity to examine the social place of the child in contemporary Western societies

Testo completoThe current Transformation of the military networks adopts the MANET as a main component of the tactical domain. Indeed, a MANET is the right solution to enable highly mobile, highly reactive and quickly deployable tactical networks. Many applications such as the Situational Awareness rely on group communications, underlying the need for a multicast service with the tactical environment where the MANET is employed as a transit network. The purpose of this thesis is to study the setting up of an optimal multicast service within this tactical environment. We firstly focus on defining the protocol architecture to carry out within the tactical network paying particular attention to the MANET. This network is interconnected within different types of networks based on IP technologies and implementing potentially heterogeneous multicast protocols. The tactical MANET is supposed to be made of several hundred of mobile nodes, which implies that the scalability is crucial in the multicast protocol architecture choice. Since the concept of clustering proposes interesting scalability features, we consider that the MANET is a clustered network. Thereby, we define two multicast routing protocols adapted to the MANET: firstly STAMP that is in charge of the multicast communications within each cluster and secondly SAFIR that handles multicast flows between the clusters. These two protocols that can be implemented independently, act in concert to provide an efficient and scalable multicast service for the tactical MANET

Testo completoThe need to collect long-term observations for research on environmental issues led to the establishment of "Zones Ateliers" by the CNRS. Thus, for several years, many databases of a spatio-temporal nature are collected by different teams of researchers. To facilitate transversal analysis of different observations, it is desirable to cross-reference information from these data sources. Nevertheless, these sources are constructed independently of each other, which raise problems of data heterogeneity in the analysis. Therefore, this thesis proposes to study the potentialities of ontologies as both objects of modeling, inference, and interoperability. The aim is to provide experts in the field with a suitable method for exploiting heterogeneous data. Being applied in the environmental domain, ontologies must take into account the spatio-temporal characteristics of these data. As the need for modeling concepts and spatial and temporal operators, we rely on the solution of reusing the ontologies of time and space. Then, a spatial-temporal data integration approach with a reasoning mechanism on the relations of these data has been introduced. Finally, data mining methods have been adapted to spatio-temporal RDF data to discover new knowledge from the knowledge-base. The approach was then applied within the Geminat prototype, which aims to help understand farming practices and their relationships with the biodiversity in the "zone atelier Plaine and Val de Sèvre". From data integration to knowledge analysis, it provides the necessary elements to exploit heterogeneous spatio-temporal data as well as to discover new knowledge

Testo completoThe aim of tactical planning of the production is to determinate the quantities to produce and to store to meet customer demand while minimizing production costs. These forecasts are based on an estimate of the capacity of the production system. However, this data is subject to many uncertainties, including the unavailability of the production system due to breakdown. The production plans based on it may be infeasible. This integration induces mutual dependencies between the two domains, whose objectives are conflicting. First, we tried to analyze a simplified problem of production planning in order to understand the organization of optimal decisions. Then we used these results to the develop efficient algorithms to solve the problem of tactical planning. We consider Lot-Sizing problems with setup times and shortage costs and with preventive and corrective maintenance concerns. In a second step we integrate in models without shortage some performance criteria, as a constraints of availability or feasibility of the planning plans, reflecting the correct integration of maintenance in the planning process

Testo completoForest planning is a difficult task that needs important human and material efforts. Many forest planning modelsare proposed in the literature. However, their implementation is usually complex. More over, their performanceis limited to small and medium forests. The whole objective of this thesis is to propose simple and efficient tools to reduce the complexity of the forest planning using mathematical modeling. In this thesis, proposed models are applied for tactical forest planning and consider mainly two spatial restrictions that are adjacency or green-up restrictions and sustainable timber yields restrictions. In the first part, we proposed a new mathematical formulation based on integer programming to model the tactical forest planning under spatial restrictions. We solved the model with an exact method using a commercial solver. We used many real forests with different sizes. Three of them are very large forests and are located in the Mauricie region of Quebec. We evaluated the performance of the proposed model using two other formulation sexisting in the literature to model the same problem under the same restrictions. Results showed that there isno formulation that out performed others when small and medium forests are used. However, the proposed formulation out performed others when large forests are used.In the second part, we proposed two heuristic approaches to solve the same problem using large forests. The first one is a linear relaxation heuristic. We compared results obtained with the heuristic with those obtained with a commercial solver when a computational time is predefined. Results showed that the solver is more performant when mono-periods problems were solved. However, when multi-periods problems were solved, unlike ourheuristic, the solver does not find any feasible solution within the fixed computational time. The second heuristicis a size reduction heuristic which uses a shape index to control the shape of the clusters of stands. Besides its simplicity, this method is very beneficial as it reduces significantly problems size and anticipate the operational planning by eliminating non-profitable clusters. In the third part, we proposed a stochastic programming model formulated as an integrated mixed integerprogramming model for scheduling harvesting operations, which directly takes into account a fire spread model. It is a bi-level model. In the first level, we used the tactical forest planning model proposed in the first part. The second level represents the fire spread model that considers fire spread between ignition points and critical points, which could be, for example, municipalities and important road crossings. It considers multiple scenarios, which takes into account wind direction, and wind spread. The integration is possible due to a reformulation of a bi-level optimization problem where the lower level shortest path representation is written explicitly with aprimal-dual reformulation of its optimality conditions. Results based on a set of illustrative instances are presented. Results vary depending on spatial restrictions considered in the model. However, harvesting scheduled are usually allocated to delay fires reaching critical points and tends to allocate harvesting operations around critical points.

Testo completoThis doctoral research has for main line the development and testing of an evaluative model of arts education focused on the effects of art and the standards of a workshop. The central issue of this model: the "teaching skills" of the artist and his relationship with the student, addressing a subject in itself, to develop its uniqueness and autonomy within the group through the shared creation. The thesis develops the hypothesis of a "zone of proximal development specific" (A. Kerlan, 2008) generated by the artistic work and aesthetic experience in a co-construction encouraging a process of subjectivation for the young, thanks to establishment of a "creative space" (Winnicott, 1975). It shows how this subjectivity necessarily going in the studio with a double work of socialization and individuation, in the cognitive, social and personal. Empirically, the research is based on data collected as part of an observatory that can qualify for the micro: it is an experimental artistic class, located in a college education area priority in Montpellier, having received professional artists in residence for four years, between three and six hours per week. Through qualitative methods (direct observation of a thousand hours, films, photographs and a thirty understanding and semi-structured interviews) the results suggest that the development of artists in residences duration, like the longitudinal experiments presented in this thesis, allows us to offer an education in art for the formation of the whole person be global

Testo completoAfter the disaster of the "terrible year" and the collapse of the Second Empire, this is the men of the IIIth Republic that meet the challenge of "the revenge" against Germany. At the time of the armistice of November 11th, 1918, the French army is the most modern of the world. The French army, under the pressure of a terrible challenge, thus caught up the history in some years, agreeing finally with the technological evolutions of the time. By becoming attached mainly to the ground and air strengths of the Northwest front, this work tries to explain the internal process which allowed a transformation so complete and also rapids of this organization often considered stiff. The thesis is shared in two parts : forge the army of the revenge ( 1871-1914 ) and the road of the victory ( 1914-1918 ). The first part attempts to describe the way the doctrines of which thought before 1914, then how these ideas "infused" in the military body. This part ends by an inventory of fixtures before the beginning of the conflict. The second part describes the various stages of the evolution of the French army, with for every chapter, the description of the process of creation-distribution of the tactical innovations. We so distinguish the immediate adaptations of 1914, the questionings of doctrinal 1915, three paradigms of 1916 (Led scientist of the battle) and 1917 (School of Verdun, Battlefield combined arms). The thesis ends by the description of the French army in 1918

Testo completoTo meet the challenges posed by urban development our « Habitat » should be perceived in a more enlarged and overall design to enable new forms of solidarity in daily life to emerge, in order to reconcile the protection of the environment, economic efficiency and social equity. In search of an answer , planners and public authorities expect a systemic framework based on assessment tools appropriate to the context of each urban project. However, first returns experiences on sustainable neighborhoods show obtaining performance depends largely on the management of the operation and its players. While continuing the work begun in the definition of the project « ADEQUA », we developed a methodological framework enabling us to achieve a share of a wider benchmaking of « sustainable neighborhoods ». The proposed methodology allows also to model and predict objectively the similarities or differences between the major players in the operation of urban development. Ultimately, this approach aims to be extended within the European project « Eco-OBS » to determine the efficiency of urban operations not only to themselves but also their methods of project managements

Testo completoWe address the problem of supply chain management in the context of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). We propose an integrated approach allowing the operationalization of the economic, environmental and social performances at the strategic, tactical and operational decision levels of the supply chain. In particular, we apply our approach to the strategic and tactical levels, for the problem of sustainable insourcing/outsourcing of the activities of the value chain on the one hand (strategic decision), and for the problem of the strategic-tactical planning of a sustainable supply chain on the other hand. In the former case, we combine value analysis with performance measurement using AHP method (Analytical Hierarchy Process), an aggregative multi-criteria technique. In the latter, we develop a multi-objective mathematical program that we apply to a realistic case inspired by the Canadian lumber industry. After solving the problem, we obtain a multitude of compromise solutions (Pareto optimums) presenting different performance levels following the economic, environmental and social dimensions, allowing the decision maker to choose the solution that reflects best his/her CSR strategy. This application illustrates the proposed method and allows us to assess the practical value of our approach

Testo completoThe lack of knowledge about territorial dynamics in Forest Guinea is one of the major constraints in a multi-stakeholder initiative for regional development. This constraint applies to the local agents as well as to the outside contributors (State agencies’ services, NGOs, projects, financial institutions. . . ) from the collective construction of regional development point of view. The actors are in that case confronted with some difficulties to understand the territorial real conditions in relation to its stakes, in order to finally undertake suitable actions for rural development. They need information and methods to analyze the conditions of the existent natural and cultivated resources, to improve their management and to evaluate the impact of development actions. Recognizing the social need for understanding before acting, has leaded us to reflect about the method to be implemented to analyze these rural dynamics and the type of Observatory able to follow up them. To achieve this Observatory, a preliminary work is necessary to set up a shared and negociated elaboration of the aims, objectives and functionalities of the method, defined “on the way going”. We adopted so far a “geo-agronomic” multi-scale approach, which provide a rural dynamics analysis on both regional and local scales of the transformation processes which occurred, and also to make a proposal for the structure of the Observatory to design

Testo completoThis thesis investigates the digital work practices of white-collar workers within the Michelin Group. During the first year of field immersion, a diagnostic of digital intelligence was conducted, leading to the following industrial question: "How to measure digital dexterity of Michelin Group's white-collar workers?". By translating this question into theoretical concepts, the following research question was identified:"How can the digital work practices of white-collar employees in a pre-digital industrial organization be observed?".Drawing on literature related to digital transformation, digital work, and observatories, this thesis advocates for the development of an observatory based on a Big Quali sample of over 200,000 textual responses collected internally. The contributions of this work include: the proposal of a theoretical framework for digital work, a methodology for developing an observatory that can become an organizational management tool, and a proposed BigQuali/AI methodological approach for researchers and practitioners aiming to analyze large textual databases

Testo completoOur focus is the supply relationship between a retailer and its suppliers. In fact, we defined stability contracts between these actors and study their impacts. At a tactical level, it is equivalent to solve a lot sizing problem under specific constraints, which are defined by the contract features. We showed that several variants of the lot sizing problem can be optimally solved in polynomial time. We studied the stability contract by performing numerous experiments. Then we tried to adapt the stability contract to a real case study : the canadian pulp and paper industry

Testo completoThis work analyses activist groups as organizations of social movements. Firstly, I study how activists express their message by mobilizing symbols (discourses, demeanor, objects…) in order to build a set of performances called the “tactical repertoire”. To do so, they draw inspiration from their predecessors and their theoretical frames. Secondly, I describe how activists mobilize media. Their media strategy relies both on the tactical repertoire and the integration of activists into the group. Finally, I enquire how the activist group mobilize its members (how it recruits and retains them); the acquisition of emancipatory skills is a particularly strong motivation for activists. In the conclusion, I show that the tactical repertoire is the backbone of an activist group as it participates in all the tasks described (mobilization of symbols, of media and of activists). This specific characteristic defines the activist group as an organization. I rely on a one-year-long ethnography among the French feminist activist group La Barbe, which denounces the absence of women at the head of organizations. I also reflect on the methodological implications of observing a feminist activist group as a male ethnographer

Testo completoActive galactic nuclei (AGN) are among the most energetic extragalactic objects in the universe. Blazars are AGN with a relativistic jet oriented towards the observer. This jet is composed of accelerated particles that canemit across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. The gamma rays produced can be studied through Čerenkov astronomy. The Čerenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) will be the next generation of telescopes operating at very high energies, with an increased sensitivity by a factor of five to ten depending on the energy compared to the current generation of imaging atmospheric Čerenkov telescopes. The NectarCAM will be the camera that equips the nine medium-sized telescopes of the northern CTAO site. In this manuscript, we address, through the description of nectarchain, the development of the calibration code for theNectarCAM. We particularly study gain calibration, with two distinct methods which we compare. We also studythe optimization of the signal extraction method in the pixels. Blazars exhibit variability on multiple timescales. For example, we can focus on long-term behavior, ranging from months to decades. The increased sensitivity of CTAO will allow for a more refined reconstruction of the power spectral density of these objects than is currently possible. In this thesis, we aim at quantifing this hypothesis through CTAO observation simulations for the blazars listed in the Key Science Projects AGN of CTAO. Real data from H.E.S.S. are also used to validate our analysis method.Blazar variability on timescales shorter than a week is probed during eruptive transient phenomena. To quantify the future prospects of CTAO for studying these eruptions, we rely on phenomenological models, adjusted to significant eruptions of the past twenty years. Here again, we simulate CTAO observations of these eruption models. The objective is to quantify the capabilities of CTAO to detect variability, or to discriminate between different emission models, hadronic or leptonic. Finally, we also attempt to study the prospects offered by CTAO for detecting periodicity in the very high energy gamma rays emission of a blazar

Testo completoThis study of military decision making process describes the progressive evolution of the understanding of the phenomenon of the war and the associated education, in a pedagogical approach essentially intended for the practitioners, but also for the keen on military history. The military decision making process is the method used for operational planning process and then the conduct of the operations. Through numerous testimonies of " war captains " and numerous historic examples, leaning on the most recent sociological studies, this thesis develops the intellectual mechanisms of the reasoning, the prerequisite essential to the decision-making, while keeping all its place for the intuition, within the framework of a military headquarter. The first chapter describes the environment of the reasoning whereas the second is engaged in a historic review of about hundred successive methods, with the phenomenon of an always rapids questioning of the official doctrine from its publication, testifying of the complexity of the subject. Essentially centered on the French military decision making process, the study leans mainly on the education delivered by the War School, from its creation following the defeat of 1870 to nowadays

Testo completoThis PhD dissertation analyses the influence of the flintlock musket upon the French infantry in the 18th century. Until now, studies of this weapon have particularly focused on the manufactured types, the manufacturing methods and regiment supplies. Our approach is one of a historian’s, working in a major military museum. It consists of studying the handling of the flintlock and more broadly speaking, how it was used against the enemy. The objective is to understand how the royal army managed to adapt to a weapon with little technical and ballistic capacity. We used various source materials: the technical and tactical archives of the French Army, numerous printed works on the art of warfare and objects from various collections of the Army museum in Paris. The first part of this dissertation is devoted to the origins, the development and the technical description of the musket. The second part examines its tactical uses. The main ensuing debate opposing supporters of the deep order against those of the thin line order has been re-examined in the light of new documents. The soldiers’ training, the conditions of line warfare and the emergence of the light infantry are also studied. The third part tries to assess the efficiency of the musket: the part it played during the battles of Blenheim (1704), Dettingen (1743), Fontenoy (1745) and the Plains of Abraham (1759) is carefully studied, then an analysis of the wounds caused by its bullets and bayonets logically follows. After a century of the Old Regime Army's use of the musket, the tactical basis of the French revolutionary and Napoleonic wars are set down

Testo completoFounded in 1878, the astronomical observatory of Bordeaux is one of the ten french observatoires created at he end of the XIXth century. In a national environment of university de centralization and while new practices are developed in astronomy with the emergence of astrophysics, the study of Bordeaux can help us to understand the reason to establish an observatory in the provinces and to characterize the strategies of action and research of its staff. The goal is precisely to determine -since Sules Simon's proposal in 1871 to found an observatory in bordeaux to the death of the first director of this institution, Georges Rayet (1839-1906) - whether the politicians, the astronomers and the local representatives succeed in creating a decentralized and innovative observatory, symbol of a franch sigificant revival in astronomy. Thus, the first part of this thesis analyzes the motivations of the various groups involved in the establishment of the observatory and describes the stages of the construction of this institution. The second part shows how sientific words were implemented ; despite the innovative scientific ambitions declared at its creation, the observatory is involved from the first years in traditional research themes, forsaking celestial spectroscopy for the international Carte du Ciel project. The last part of this study proposes some ways of understanding this scientific reorientation. As a consequence, the Bordeaux observatory reveals a french astronomical revival full of nuances, with an unfinished decentralization and a moderate innovation, result of various facts. Thus the involvement in the Carte du Ciel project can rather be considered as a consequence of the non development of astrophysics than as its cause
