Abstract (sommario):
With the development of nursing education institutions, there emerged a need for continued education and expansion of the body of related scientific knowledge. After the introduction of nursing care and nursing into the university curricula, scientific research in this area became an inevitable part of the advancement of the profession. Nursing focuses on the care for others and deals with issues such as nutrition, security and safety, admission and care, hygiene issues and similar. Promoting the research and involvement of nurses in research teams is of great importance to the quality of nurses' work, as it encourages evidence-based and data-based work. Generally speaking, we can say that the history of nursing research begins together with modern nursing. Nurses involved in research are often faced with a lack of support from managerial nurses and misunderstanding from colleagues who believe that doing research has a negative impact on clinical practice. Such a situation suggests that research work should actually be encouraged during school. There are three major areas with regard to nursing research: nursing education, nursing practice, and nursing administration. When it comes to trends in nursing education, the emphasis is primarily put on the importance of quality research rooted in philosophy and humanism that is also able to provide practically usable results. In the field of nursing practice, the emphasis is on research that promotes health and healthy lifestyles. Finally, in the field of nursing administration, the most common is evidence-based research. The primary focus is placed on topics such as nursing, energy therapies, knowledge and attitudes, and spirituality. The relationship between care and treatment, symptoms management, quality of life and depression are the topics most commonly examined. In Serbia, nurses have only recently been given the opportunity to study at a university level. There is also an increasing number of nursing colleges. This situation speaks in favor of stimulating and fostering research work.

Toffoli, Luisa Patrizia. "'Nursing Hours' or 'nursing' hours - a discourse analysis". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/8367.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is about the business of nursing; the making and remaking of nurses’ work in the context of private healthcare. Nurses in Australia, as in other countries around the world, have experienced considerable workplace changes over the past 15 years due to governments and public and private healthcare organisations seeking to reform healthcare service delivery. These reforms have significantly changed not only how private hospitals manage care, but the nursing role in practice. This ethnographic study explores the impact of these reforms on nurses’ work in one Australian acute care private hospital. It critically examines nurses’ organising practices in light of the workload measurement method used to staff the hospital, unit and ward with minimum staffing. Using Foucault’s (1972) archaeological approach and drawing upon governmentality theory as the analytical framework, I will argue that within the political rationality of neo-liberalism, ‘care’ in nursing is a technology of governance. As such, nurses’ ‘care’ transforms contemporary healthcare policy, in particular policy pertaining to private healthcare, from a macro to the micro level of everyday practice. Care is the means of producing a ‘business savvy’ nurse; someone who is not only an expert clinician with transferable skills but who knows the private health market and is able to work within a competitive business environment. Analysis reveals the contradictions and tensions that exist for nurses between the clinical and economic foci, and the economics and business of health as the nursing role is played out within the organisational imperatives of their work. This study illustrates the shifting boundaries of nurses’ work in relation to the ascendancy of business concerns in healthcare delivery. While methods of workload measurement may well represent what counts as the nursing hours in healthcare organisations, the nurses in this study spoke at length of the strategies they used to make the nursing hours ‘work’. Findings indicate that nurses employ specific discursive strategies when talking about ‘nursing hours’. When addressing their workloads, their discourses centred on the business of care delivery, of nurse-to-patient ‘allocations’ and ‘handover’, or the many instances of ‘handing over’ their work. The study challenges nurses’ professional discourses about what nursing is, what nurses actually do and the sophistication with which this is accomplished at work. Conceiving of nurses’ work in terms of ‘nursing’ hours rather than patients in the business of health service delivery provides a different way of thinking about nursing workforce issues at a time when healthcare organisations and systems worldwide grapple with the question of how many nurses and what kind of nurses they need.

Washington, Georgita T. "Mentoring the Clinical Nurse in Nursing Research". Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2018. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/7606.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this article is to describe the research mentoring process used with a small team of nurses by a PhD prepared nurse certified as a Nursing Professional Development Specialist and as a Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist. It will describe how bedside nurses were actively engaged in the research process by having them learn about research while operationalizing that knowledge as simultaneously were mentored in conducting a relevant research study. The process described and discussed in this article should be useful to nurse leaders to facilitate removing the traditional barriers to nursing research that still remain in healthcare organizations today. These include lack of time and knowledge, about the process, lack of institutional support, and lack of mentoring through the process. It should also be helpful to nurse educators in the clinical area to encourage more nurses to participate in nursing research.

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation investigated the reason nurses (RNs, LPNs) stayed at one job for 20 years or longer and compared their responses to nurses (RNs, CMAs) who changed jobs more than four times in 20 years. The study divided their responses into two categories, hygiene factors or motivation factors, based on Herzberg’s two factor theory. The dissertation topic was chosen to determine if increased pay has a significant impact on the long-term employment of nurses, although quantitative research in the field heavily promoted pay as a solution to turnover. Healthcare companies incur costly consequences of turnover and this qualitative study adds information to the field on potential interventions to address and decrease turnover. This dissertation examined the real reasons these participants stayed at their jobs long-term and why these short-term employees left jobs frequently, with the results showing that pay would not decrease turnover of short-term employees. The long-term people stayed for motivation factors and the short-term people left to seek hygiene factors. The quantitative research in the field, focused on interventions to decrease turnover, was not supported in this research.

Abstract (sommario):
The crafting of Te Hihimā (woven flax cloak) o Te Tohu Paetahi Tapuhi (Bachelor of Nursing) at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology was developed from the connectivity of the collaborative learning relationships and experiences that student nurses encounter during their educational journey. The weaving of a student’s individual Hihimā is a metaphorical representation of the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes, and protection as the student-nurse weaver integrates theory with practice, and fuses the art and science implicit within the nursing profession. The concept of Te Hihimā emerged during the journey to develop a bicultural Bachelor of Nursing curriculum within a mainstream educational institution in the Waiariki rohe, Aotearoa New Zealand. Te Tohu Paetahi Tapuhi was accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) for teaching delivery commencing in 2015. This article will deliberate the development of the philosophy, and analyse the weaving analogy, in the development of nursing graduates who carry the professionally protective mantle of Te Hihimā to sustain them during the journey into professional practice, and beyond.

Abstract (sommario):
Simulation scenarios are commonly used in nursing education, but to a lesser extent in mental health (MH) nursing. The aim of this scoping review was to assess the evidence investigating MH nursing simulations in tertiary education settings to consider best practice in developing realistic MH scenarios. A scoping review of full-text peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2016 and 2021, which were available on Clarivate Web of Science, Ovid, Scopus, EBSCO (including PubMed), ProQuest and Google Scholar, was conducted using predefined criteria. A total of 16 articles based on the criteria were considered for review. The data collected showed positive results of simulations, including a decrease in undergraduate nurses’ MH anxiety or stigma following simulation; however, there was a strong leaning towards students’ self-reported experiences of simulation rather than quantifiable standardised measures. More empirical research is needed on how to provide MH simulations in undergraduate nursing programmes, while, at the same time, building on their effectiveness.

Abstract (sommario):
From my own experience as a Student Nurse Educator and my role as an Academic Liaison Nurse (ALN) in a Dedicated Education Unit (DEU), clinical practicums can be challenging for our nursing students. Responses in practicum can vary from exciting to downright scary, but for those with additional challenges such as dyslexia, getting words mixed up or incorrect spelling can have a devastating effect on their confidence and their ability to fulfil their role. This paper draws on a study completed for my Master of Applied Professional Practice about the stigma of dyslexia and the impact on nursing students. Using a framework of qualitative phenomenology, I conducted face-to-face interviews with five participants, and then employed narrative analysis to better understand their journeys. I was privileged to hear their personal stories as current nursing students and graduates talked about how they managed barriers, including fatigue, and expectations while completing their practicums. This paper shares some of the coping strategies participants offered, as well as my own reflections of how teaching and clinical staff can help. Educators and clinical leads alike need to be knowledgeable and skilled, and understanding of those with different learning styles and preferences. Consistent support and, often, repetition, are the keys to learning, and reducing stress and fatigue for those with dyslexia. In our sector, multiple programmes have work experience, placements or internships, and many of the issues and responses discussed will be transferable beyond the Bachelor of Nursing degree. I hope that sharing some of the participants’ stories and my own observations may encourage others to consider how they support learners with dyslexia and discover new ideas that work.

"Exploring the Impact of Promoting Mental Health, Addiction, and Intellectual Disability Nursing as a Career to Undergraduate Nurses in Their Last Year of Study". In 2021 ITP Research Symposium. Unitec ePress, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.34074/proc.2205008.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Specialist nursing practice in mental health, addiction and intellectual disability (MHAID) comprises a growing sector of public health demand, and yet this field is one of the least popular career pathways for student nurses (Happell et al., 2019a; Owen, 2021). International studies and personal observations by members of the research team as nurse educators suggest two key factors at play. First, student willingness to work in MHAID specialist roles is impacted by entrenched stigma and discrimination against people who experience mental distress, addictions and intellectual disabilities. Second, students have voiced their perceptions of specialist mental-health nursing as less important than general nursing. Working in MHAID is commonly seen as carrying little prestige, variety, challenge or opportunity for skill development; worse, such findings from surveys of final-year student nurses’ employment preferences have remained relatively unchanged over the last 20 years, at least (Wilkinson et al., 2016). With employers desperate for specialist MHAID staff, and education providers charged with meeting industry needs, how can nursing programmes begin to combat this bias and bring about attitudinal change? This paper describes a pilot initiative with Year 3 undergraduate student nurses in one Te Pūkenga subsidiary, which we believe shows considerable promise for a wider roll-out across the tertiary healthcare-education sector. A hui supported by Whitireia’s Community of Practice for Mental Health and Addiction within the School of Health and Social Services allowed students to interact with multiple industry stakeholders: District Health Board (DHB) partners; graduates working in the mental health and addictions sector, experts by experience; and the postgraduate New Entry to Specialist Practice in Mental Health teaching team. A subsequent survey evaluation confirmed the positive impact of the initiative regarding altering negative stereotypes of nursing roles within MHAIDs and increasing the number of students who may consider specialising in these areas, post-graduation.

Abstract (sommario):
Review question / Objective: To explore the attrition problems, influencing factors and barriers to retention among regional and remote nursing students who enrolled in the undergraduate programs in Australia. Condition being studied: Student retention concerns an individual’s commitment to an learning goal. Low student retention has been a long-standing issue for nursing programs and it is an important threat to the future nursing workforce. Attrition is measured by the number of students enrolled in the first year who do not complete their study in the following year. With the growth of online programs, the issue of high attrition raises concern for students enrolled in these programs. Moreover, the social context of students may influence positive motivation and affect their decision to stay in their nursing programs.

Abstract (sommario):
Review question / Objective: “Usual care” is changing all the time whether in clinical practice or experimental research, the scope of usual care is constantly updated by adding new contents. However, the composition of usual care is still unclear, and there is no formal description to confirm whether the nursing contents are in line with usual care’ requirements. The goal was to review existing or not published but completed SRs about UC’s elements to gather the evidence about: a What’s the development routine of UC in diverse field. b The similarities and differences of different UC. c The similarities and differences between UC group and experimental group. d What should the nursing routine meet in the interventional study, or the elements that usual care needs to have in researched or clinical experiment within a relatively controllable range.

Abstract (sommario):
Evidence-based practice is often encouraged in most service delivery settings, yet a substantial body of research indicates that service providers often show resistance or limited adherence to such practices. Resistance to the uptake of evidence-based treatments and programs is well-documented in several fields, including nursing, dentistry, counseling, and other mental health services. This research brief discusses the reasons behind provider resistance, with a contextual focus on mental health service provision in school settings. Recommendations are to attend to resistance in the preplanning proposal stage, during early implementation training stages, and in cases in which insufficient adherence or low fidelity related to resistance leads to implementation failure. Directions for future research include not only attending to resistance but also moving toward client-centered approaches grounded in the evidence base.
