The study aims to identify how Arab-American authors Naomi Shihab Nye and Diana Abu-Jaber depict Arabs in their novels, Habibi and Crescent. Additionally, the study attempts to compare and contrast between the two writers’ depictions of Arabs in their novels. To achieve the objectives of the study, the theory of Post-colonialism is used; more specifically, Edward Said’s views from his book Orientalism are applied to both novels. The study concludes by showing how both Nye and Abu-Jaber depict Arab characters in an ambivalent way within their works, Habibi and Crescent, respectively, in that they sometimes present Arabs in a positive light and other times in a negative light. The study also concludes with a set of concepts that include lack of identity, hybridity, and multiculturalism that have affected Arab-Americans and influenced their cultural values. These representations are also considered ambivalent.

September 11, 2001 has been the most aggressive day in the history of modern America. The physical and psychological damages caused by the attacks left a unique experience of the day in the mind of American writers. Therefore, if literary and political orientations changed after the 9/11, novel's subject matter and themes changed too, because novel is a reflection of its social and political context. This study examines the assumption implicit in the dominant conceptions that novel serves the state's politics in its pursue of interests through representations and misrepresentations of other nations. This study examines how American novel expresses solidarity with the state and its politics, ignoring its imperial and hegemonic attitude towards other nations. Novel has become the most effective genres to represent the feelings of the nation and the concern of the country. Analysis will refer to two novels, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and Falling man, which directly deal with the moments of destroying the World Trade Centre and manifestly identify the terrorists, their culture, their religion and their intentions. Tendency to such themes allows American novel to follow the mainstream politics without grappling with the state's ideologies, interests and politics. Discussion will focus on the Foucauldian approach to literature and power and on the implications of using the Foucauldian approach to the study of imperial literature.

The current study deciphers how Ahdaf Soueif and Fadia Faqir, who are known as diasporic Arab writers, adopt the western stereotypical perspectives towards the Arabs. Instead of advocating Arabs and demystifying their identity against the western stereotypical misconceptions, Soueif (2000) and Faqir (2007) represent Arabs as backward, passive, and violent terrorists, as evident in their novels. Thus, the study explains how those Arab diasporic writers adopt the western stance against Arabs by enhancing and highlighting the image of Arabs as different from the rest of the globe at the cost of Arabs and in favor of the West. The study deploys Said's Orientalism to read the narratives under discussion, highlighting that such narratives misrepresent how Arabs think, behave, and feel to gain some plausibility and popularity in the West (Occident). Soueif and Faqir, we argue, sacrifice the ethics of loyalty and belonging to Arabs in favor of assimilating with the West and gaining its admiration, which resulted in creating a very inaccurate portrait of Arabs. The study reveals the potential reasons of such unethical behaviors, emphasizing that falsifying the reality of the Arab World by some Arab diasporic writers should never be the optimal way to assimilate with the West or cope with its expectations.

The study of intergenerational or multigenerational trauma is the locus of 21st-century fiction and non-fiction; however, few research studies dare to explore the contextual reality of this research scope. This present research analyzes the issue of intergenerational trauma in Jennifer Zeynab Joukhadar’s The Map of Salt and Stars and Hala Alyan's Salt Houses. With Michelle Balaev’s theorization of pluralistic trauma, this study focuses on the experiences of Arabs’ intergenerational trauma in selected novels and also on the contexts related to the trauma experiences. This article uses the textual analysis approach to support its conceptual framework that illustrates the context of war and displacement in different Arab states. The analysis of the two novels illustrates how trauma affects not only victims' lives but also their descendants' lives.

This third and final part of a summary of post-Zionist critique follows the manifestations of new ways of looking at Israeli history and the "other" in film, theater, novels, music, and poetry. Cinema has the greatest potential for influencing the public and has gone further than the other media in challenging traditional views. The author concludes that the cultural products that have seriously transcended the Zionist narrative and its negative portrayal of the Arabs remain outside the Israeli canon and have limited impact, though the groundwork has been laid for what is clearly a growing trend.

This article explores the theme of war in the main graphic novels of Lamia Ziadé and Zeina Abirached, two Franco-Lebanese artists. Following a tripartite plan, it scrutinizes the pictorial and scriptural aesthetics of the artists in Bye Bye Babylond (2010), Ô nuit, Ô mes yeux (2015) and Ma très grande mélancolie arabe (2017) by Ziadé and in Le Jeu des hirondelles: mourir partir revenir (2007), Je souviens: Beirut (2008) and Prendre refuge (2018) by Abirached. The article examines each author’s approach to the history of the Middle East, especially that of Lebanon, as well as the impact of the so-called ‘duty of memory’ on bandes dessinés that manifest a clear autobiographical temptation.

Recent years have seen a surge of scholarship that foregrounds the relationship between the novel and the nation. The postcolonial condition of much of the Arab world has made the Arabic novel a compelling case. For historical reasons the focus has tended to be on the literary production of North Africa, the Levant and, to a lesser extent, Iraq. This thesis aims to redress the balance while interrogating certain assumptions about this relationship. Its main contention is that the early Saudi novel, as a unique case study, complicates traditional categorisations of the novel in Arabic, either in terms of a set of discrete, national traditions or as a monolithic, regional tradition, i.e. ‘the Arabic novel’. I argue that the ‘Saudi’ novel and its canonisation reflect, and were shaped by, the inherent ambivalence of the nation space and Arab discourses of national identity. This ambivalence gives rise to a third or liminal space of literary production. The thesis revolves around two axes. Firstly, it traces the emergence of the novel in Hijaz, from the 1930s through to the late 1950s. Although the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was founded in 1932, for a long time Hijaz retained a sense of its own distinct identity, countering the dominant Najdi-Wahhabi narrative. The close reading of selected texts explores how they express both a strong sense of Hijazi identity and a deep ambivalence towards ‘the Saudi nation’. The salience of ‘the woman question’ in Arab nationalist discourses makes gender a key consideration. The territorialising impulse present in much men’s fiction is shown to be absent from the Saudi women’s novel that emerged between the late 1950s and mid-1970s. Aside from exemplifying the genderedness of nation, this contributes to an explanation of the marginalisation of Saudi women’s novels from the canon. Secondly, the issue of novel and nation is linked to the critical discourse on the Saudi novel and its canonisation. Through an analysis of the literary articles that appeared in the pages of Hijaz’s early press, I trace the origins of a nationalist, ideological concept of the novel and its function that privileges the canonical realist novel for its mimetic representation of the writer’s national social reality. The result of this is that histories of the Saudi novel often present a teleology that is unable to adequately explain its construction or account for its liminality. The thesis offers a more nuanced understanding of the dynamic relationship between the novel and identity, as well as the novel’s construction in the Arabic context.

Cette étude consiste en une analyse détaillée des débuts d’un corpus de romans arabes du vingtième siècle, constitué en fonction de leur diversité technique et thématique. Nous avons tenté de répondre aux interrogations suivantes : Qu’est-ce qu’un début de roman ? Quelles sont, sur le plan énonciatif, les “priorités” dans le début ? Comment le début fonctionne-t-il par rapport à l’ensemble du récit ? Les composantes principales de l’histoire y sont-elles annoncées et si oui, comment ? Enfin, existe-t-il des aspects spécifiques aux débuts des romans arabes liés à la culture dont ils sont issus ? Nous avons, par ailleurs, adopté une approche à la fois discursive et narrative et pris en compte les aspects suivants : les trois codes figuratifs (espace, temps, personnage) ; le rapport du début avec l’ensemble de la structure narrative du récit ; l’éventuel lien entre le début et la fin de celui-ci, enfin, la manière dont le début annonce les idéologies sous-jacentes. Cette démarche nous a, parallèlement, permis de dégager les convergences et les divergences entre les récits étudiés et d’y repérer une certaine évolution chronologique
The present study consists of a detalied analysis of the beginning of novels in a corpus of 20th century Arabic authors. These were selected with regard to their technical and thematic diversity. The study aims to answer to the following questions : What is the beginning of a novel ? What are, in terms of enunciation, the “priorities” in the beginning ? How does the beginnig proceed as a part of the whole narrative structure ? Are the main parts of the story announced in the beginning ? And if so how ? and finally: Are there any specific aspects in the beginnings of Arabic novels that are related to the culture from which they come ? Our approach is both from a discursive and a narrative angle where the follwoing has been taken into consideration : The three elements (Space, Time and Character); The relation between the beginning and the narrative of the rest of the novel; The possible relation between the beginning and the end of the novel; and, The way in which the beginning announces the underlying ideologies of the novel. This approach allowed us to deduce at the same time some common points and some divergences in the studied novels as well as detect a certain chronological evolution

The Second Gulf War (1990-1991) brought about huge transformations in the relationships between the Western and Arab world. The invasion of Kuwait in August 1990 and deployment of American-led Western troops in Saudi Arabia brought the Arab world to the top of the Western agenda. The presence of mostly non-Muslim Western troops in Saudi Arabia, which is home to the holy sites of Islamic people, triggered mixed reactions among Arab people and polarised their relationships with the West. These developments left a huge impact on literature and the shaping of the imagery of the Other in fiction. This thesis began as an attempt to study the impact of the Second Gulf War on the depiction the Image of the Other. The research rests on conducting an analysis of how the West-Arab encounters are being perceived in Anglo-American and Arabic fiction (1991-2001). The study considers six fictional works from the Anglo-American world: Friends, Lovers, Enemies (1991) by Barbara Victor, Innocent Blood (1997) by Christopher Dickey, I Know Many Songs But I Cannot Sing (1996) by Brian Kiteley, Hideous Kinky (1992) by Esther Freud, Virgins of Paradise (1993) by Barbara Wood, and Falling for the Sheikh by Carole Grace (2001). The study also focuses on six works from the Arab world: Bahãa Ţãhir’s (Ңubb fi-l-manfã) Love in Exile (1995), Ibrãhīm Ãḥmad’s (Ţufl al-CNN) The CNN Child (1996), Yūsuf al-‘Īlah’s (Ghazal al-dhãkirah) The Memory Spinning (2000), Ãḥmad Ibrãhîm Al-Faqīh’s (al-Thulãthiya) Gardens of the Night (1995), and Ңanãn al-Shaykh’s (Innahã London Yã ‘Azīzī) Only in London (2001) and Bahãa al-Dīn al-Ţawd’s (al-Ba‘īdūn) Those Who Are Far Away. These writers have been studied in the belief that they demonstrate the shaping of the East-West encounters. Writers from both cultures place their cultural concerns within a national framework that they constantly negotiate. Nevertheless, the thesis challenge is to pinpoint the complex web of factors that characterised each culture. Hence, this study seeks to contribute in showing how these writers are engaged in the process of reconstructing, adjusting and even transcending the stereotypes of their cultures.

This study is mainly concerned with the renewal in Saudi novel in late 1980s. It also links this renewal with global literary trends via studying the most prominent foreign influences that influenced the writing of Saudi novelists in that period. The study focuses on magical realism trend, which has emerged in Latin America and then expanded to be a global trend influencing many novelists around the word including Saudi novelists. The study is divided into five chapters in addition to an introduction and a conclusion. Chapter one provides an overview of the main aspects of the study. It clarifies the title terminologies and contains an introduction along with two sections. The first section is devoted to explaining the most important stages of the evolution of Saudi Arabian novels. It aims to determine the period on which the study is focusing. The second section is devoted to exploring the meaning and development of the term magic realism. It highlights the innovative and unconventional ideas of the magical realism movement that opened new horizons of inquiry and creation away from the restriction of realism and encouraged artists and writers to challenge the classical definition of reality. Then, a comparison is conducted between fantasy elements in the classical Arabic literature and the new global magical realism trend. The comparative study aims to reveal the similarities and dissimilarities between classical and modern trends and to investigate the distinctive power of magic realism on contemporary Arabic writers in general and Saudi writers in particular. Chapters two to five contain an empirical analysis. Each chapter is devoted to analyse a number of novels that relevant to one of the selected Saudi novelists. The thesis studies three males and one female Saudi novelists whose works reflect aspects of magical realism.

This thesis studies the image of the West in a selection of Arab novels that were published between 1900 and 1915, when the Arab world was in the early stages of Western occupation. It is an attempt to form a clear picture of how Arab writers of that period viewed the West and its civilisation, by studying the novels' characters during that time. First attempts to write Arab novels were closely connected to the depiction of the 'Other', i. e.: the Westerner, using this image to express their hopes and pains. The novels were timid messages addressed to the West, in the hope that it would reconsider its relationship with the East. This thesis aims to shed light on the significant changes in Arab thought in the early 20th century and how Arab intellectuals came to view the West. These changes were preceded by a state of fascination with everything that came from the West; technological inventions, political and economic systems, and even social conditions. The writers were extremely concerned with women's rights, comparing the living conditions of Western women with the poor and backward conditions of Eastern women. It is hoped that this research will serve as a foundation for further research in this field, and that further studies can be carried out on the views expressed through these novels.

Notre étude consiste à retracer l'histoire du genre narratif arabe et plus précisément la nouvelle arabe de la fin du XIXème siècle jusqu'à 1969. Dans un premier temps, nous faisons un rappel historique et littéraire incluant la floraison du genre narratif en Egypte. Dans un second temps, nous analysons, à travers les préfaces de Mahmoud Taymour, l'évolution et les changements que le genre narratif arabe a subis dans la première moitié du XXème siècle. Enfin, la troisième partie illustre le gain en maturité du genre romanesque et plus précisément la nouvelle, à travers les oeuvres de Naguib Mahfouz, dans lesquelles nous trouvons un tableau complet de la société égyptienne et arabe de l'époque
Our study consists on tracking the history of the arab narrative type, more precisely the arab novel since end of nineteenth century till 1969. First, we start in the first chapter by a litterature and historical reminder of the birth of the narrative type in Egypt. Then, we analyze in the second chapter, through the Mahmoud Taymour introductions, the changes and evolutions that occur on this arab narrative type in the first half of the twentieth century. Finaly, the third chapter is the occasion to illustrate the gain in maturity of the narrative litterature and more specificaly the novel. This illustration is done through Naguib Mahfouz novels where we find a complete drawing of the egyptian and arab society at that time

This thesis looks at four novels, Ghassan Kanafani's Rijal fi al-Shams (trans: Men in the Sun) published first in 1964 (Chapter One), Imil Habibi's Al-Waqa'i' Al-Gharibah fi Ikhtifa' Sa'id Abi Al-Nahs Al-Mutasha'l (trans, Said the Ill-Fated Pessoptimist) which was published in serial beginning 1973 (Chapter Two), Sahar Khalifah's Al-Subbar (trans, Wild Thorns) published in 1974 (Chapter Three), and finally, Al-Duffah al-Thalithah li-Nahar al-Urdun (while there is no English translation of the work, the title translates as The Third Bank of the Jordan River) by Husayn Al-Barghuthi (Chapter Four). It analyzes the different ways in which the works construct identity of Palestinian characters using a variety of literary techniques, puts the novels into their historic contexts, and attempts to draw some broad conclusions about the construction of identities in the Palestinian novel in general.

Application of Health Informatics (HI) is becoming more pervasive in the Saudi Arabian health organisations (SAHOs) with the aim of exploiting its potential for better healthcare delivery. Yet, to date, the management of HI has not been fully digested in the Saudi health environment. Therefore, adoption of imported models has become a common practice for managing HI. Consequently, most implemented systems fall short of meeting objectives or tackling key existing issues. The aim of the study is to develop a model for HI management that not only deals with key prevailing issues but also should be compatible with the Saudi Arabian health environment. The research contends that the key to success in exploiting the potential of HI is the use of appropriate local models that fully integrate with the Saudi Arabian health environment. The research design was mainly guided by pragmatic philosophy which incorporated both quantitative and qualitative research. It was inductive in nature and used a field research methodology to accomplish the research objectives. Empirical data was collected via questionnaires and interviews in the collaborating health organisations. Literature review, data analyses of the questionnaires and interviews yielded the initial framework for the Health Informatics Management Model (HIMM). A first round evaluation of the HIMM was conducted yielding a revised version. Later, data was also gathered from participants in a second round of evaluating the HIMM. The second round was to reassess the compatibility of HIMM with the Saudi Arabian health organisations, and to update the model in order to match the current application of HI in these organisations. The analysis of the data gleaned from the second stage evaluation yielded a revised (and final) HIMM, contemplated by participants. Based on the above empirical data, the research study introduces the HIMM, the first holistic and systematic HI framework that should enable the Saudi health providers and managers to better comprehend the multi-faceted perspectives that form the HI management paradigm, and guide them in its management. It can allow them to decide how best to manage HI projects in a way that ensures an optimum use of HI resources for effective and efficient delivery of healthcare and services. This work is of considerable utility in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States, where HI management and its application are regarded as an area of high priority.

Zusammenfassung Several years after the Tunisian uprising of 2010–11, it is now time to explore the literary production of its aftermath. This chapter focuses on novels written in French and Arabic that have found acclaim in the Tunisian literary scene, all of them winners of the Tunisian prize for fiction, the Prix Comar d’Or. At the same time, the works deal in some way with the uprising of 2010/2011. This starting point allows various insights: First, it compares the novels, exploring trends such as autobiographic reflections and the turn to past revolutions. Secondly, the chapter asks more structural questions about the context of the novels’ production (authors, publishers) as well as about their honorary reception through literary awards. Beyond characterizing the post-revolutionary Tunisian literary scene, this approach also makes it possible to address the ways in which the Tunisian literary establishment wants the revolutionary events to be reworked in literature.

How was Arab identity imagined in a world where most Middle Eastern populations stopped calling themselves Arabs? After the mid-ninth century AD, descriptions of Arabs proliferated in Arabic literature, whilst Arab identity as a social/political asset was in decline. In this period, the key spokesmen for the idea of Arabness were philologists who fundamentally reworked impressions of Arab identity as part of new theories about the Arabic language. Diachronic survey of the development of Arabic philology from the late eighth to eleventh centuries reveals shifting intentions and values which standardised the Arabic language via a unique process that focused on the idealisation of Bedouin as paragons of the ‘original Arabs’. Studying Arabic philology within its socio-historical contexts reveals how the grammarians transcended language study and forged paradigmatic changes to the ways Arab history and culture are interpreted. The novel association of Arab with Bedouin became a popular theme in Arabic literature from the early tenth century, and the weight of the resultant writings comprehensively transformed Arabness from the former expression of urban/Muslim elite identity in early Islam to a desert/Bedouin pre-Islamic identity which has cast a long shadow on the notion of Arab identity to the present.

Abstract This chapter examines novels written by Arabic-speaking immigrants to Latin America and their descendants, emphasizing their diversity and commonalities with respect to language and theme. Providing an overview of the history of Arab migration from Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine to Latin America, the chapter addresses how these migrants’ home-country concerns meshed with those of the differing national and regional contexts to which they arrived, configuring life in the mahjar, or place of emigration. The chapter shows that the Arab Latin American novel includes works written in Arabic, Spanish, and Portuguese, while highlighting the complex ways this body of novels engages multiple languages, dialects, and registers, as well as the literary heritages of the Arab world and Latin America. These novels can be grouped according to shared orientations and themes: exile novels oriented toward the sociopolitical concerns of the home region in the Levant, migration novels focused on the travel and transitions between old and new homes, and diaspora novels oriented toward the experience of second- and third-generation members of the Latin American mahjar. These novels sustain and challenge prevalent discourses and ideologies pertaining to “Arabness” and conceptions of identity in countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico. Moreover, they address intergenerational relationships and struggles, and they navigate issues of linguistic and cultural loss (and gain) over time. Arab Latin American novels confront displacement and dislocation, respond to discrimination and alienation associated with orientalist stereotyping and prejudice, imagine new ways of belonging, and create unique conceptions of place.

This chapter shows how al-Shidyaq’s novel, Al-Saq ‘ala al-Saq (Leg Over Leg), produces a radical critique of the supposed philological decadence of the Arabic language. The text does this through a carnivalization of Arabic, where the author generates the kind of ambivalence that is constitutive of the category of grotesque realism in Bakhtin’s account of the carnivalesque. By articulating the subaltern status of Arabs under Ottoman rule in a language marked by dynamism, excess, and proliferation, al-Shidyaq is able to make powerlessness and disease signify awakening and renaissance. The novel challenges the Eurocentric origins of the novelistic form while simultaneously disproving, in raucous fashion, both the Orientalist thesis of the decadence of Semitic languages and cultures and the self-diagnosis of the Arab nahda that sought to cleanse Arabic of tradition to modernize it.

The 1880s, witnessing disappointing returns on silk in Syria, Salīm al-Bustānī’s far too early death in 1884, the increasing censure of the Sublime Porte, and the emigration to Cairo of Jurjī Zaydān, Fāris Nimr and Yaʿqūb Ṣarrūf -- fleeing the collapse of the Syrian Protestant College intellectual community --, disillusioned the dreams of material and intellectual progress that fueled the rise of the private Arabic press and the serialized Arabic novel in 1860s and 1870s Beirut. It is a macabre, melancholic turn for the Arabic novel, haunted by Salīm al-Bustānī, whose novels lie buried, Zaydān tells us, “in the pages of Al-Jinān.” Zaydān’s early 1892 novel Asīr al-Mutamahdī (Captive of the Self-Made or Would-Be Mahdi) emblematically pivots around a bloody lock of hair locked in a box in Cairo since the novel’s protagonist fled 1860 Mt. Lebanon. In Egypt, debts to British and French banks simultaneously funded the speculative irrigation of cotton land as well as the transformation of Cairo’s city center, sedimented in the public garden of Ezbekiyya. The addictive, illicit, nocturnal pleasures of Ezbekiyya would cast an anxious pall over its Edenic grounding of Egypt’s own Nahḍah, if only readers would decode its specious, speculative foundations.

This chapter discusses serialized translated novels. The Arabic novel made its own proper entry into the Arabic print sphere at this moment as a part of the uncertain reform project of print culture. Novels were published after and alongside a larger body of serialized translated novels that in fact occupied the greater part of the new audience's leisure reading habits. Over the course of the first decades of commercial print from the late 1850s to the late 1870s, serialized translated novels appeared in almost every type of Arabic periodical; for many readers, the word “novel” itself probably referred to these works and not the few original ones produced to compete with them. It was not just news translation that was central to the development of Arabic print culture; the translated novel, which appeared first and most prominently in serialized form, was often identified as part of periodicals' reform projects. At the same time that editors embraced translated fiction as a vehicle for their messages, however, their claim that these works served serious moral purposes was by no means indisputable. These novels' excesses were not always containable by the moral intentions of journal editors, who sometimes resorted to qualifications and elaborate interpretations in order to justify their publication. Print's civilizing reform mission, as uncertain as it was, had a primary object: the modern reading subject. Transforming the public into a reading public, and one that read properly, was the goal of many magazine producers who outlined ideal reading practices and modeled them through novels. And it was likewise a goal with an uncertain outcome.

The purpose of this research is to explore the patterns of journalistic treatments for issues of Arab Language in Al Arab Qatari newspaper during the year of 2017. It also seeks to understand the degree to which this journalistic behavior enhances Qatar National identity. The importance of this research, which is funded by Qatar National Research Fund, No. UREP21-095-5-009 is to test the relationship between journalistic practices in relation to coverage of Arabic language issues and national identity. As interdisciplinary research combining Arabic language and journalism studies, its data were gathered by students of Arabic and Mass Communication Departments. The study adopted the descriptive and analytical approach to explore a sample of 841 publications that covered 10 linguistic forms including folk literature, translation, sermon, thought, novel, narration, poetry, story, drama and others as well as 6 editorial forms including investigative report, news report, dialogue, news, article, feature story and others. We analyze both the editorial content and the layout treatment. The results showed a statistical significance in the use of different editorial forms to demonstrate the Arabic language topics in Al Arab Qatari newspaper as well as the use of different layout techniques such as positioning, size, headline style and the accompanying visual elements. Future studies can compare the influence of different journalistic practices on national identity.

This study examines the relationship between phonological awareness of English-language phonemes not found in EFL students’ native language and their reading comprehension. Participants included 51 native speakers of Arabic who were all EFL learners. Participants were enrolled in an English-medium university following an American curriculum. Participants’ phonological awareness of three sounds was tested. The phoneme /f/, which is found in both English and Arabic, served as the baseline, whereas the test phonemes were /p/ and /ʊ/, which are not found in Arabic. Participants were then tested on a passage from the reading comprehension portion of the TOEFL exam. Higher scores on the reading comprehension task were positively correlated only with scores of awareness of the phoneme /p/. This finding indicates that explicit training in phonological awareness of novel consonant sounds may aid reading comprehension in EFL learners who are native speakers of Arabic.

The biblical compositional pattern “sons of no X” for “X–less ones” has been somewhat (just a bit) productive in Modern Hebrew, but as the Old Testament has been so influential across cultures since the Septuagint became available in the Hellenistic world, one comes across novel uses to which “son of Belial” has been put, such as in Dryden’s political allegory in Absalom and Achitophel, even as the etymology of Belial was not transparent to ones who did not know Hebrew and its word /bli/ ‘without’. Moreover, Arabic /bala/ ‘without’ also occurs in wordformation, and as the influence of Arabic along the eastern coast of Africa resulted in the Swahili language, the Swahili name for the Pigmies was formed as such an Arabic compound.

This paper aims at investigating the problem of translating dynamic elements in the Arabic novel “Al-Shahwan” into English. It proposes criteria of translation in which the concepts of possibility and necessity are employed to select the most appropriate method of translation. It is hypothesized that when there is a case of possibility, a source oriented strategy can be followed in translation and when there is a case of necessity a target oriented strategy must be used. Practically, in order to test these hypotheses, some dynamic elements in the Arabic novel “Al-Shahwan” with their English renditions have been analysed according to the proposed model. The results proved that the proposed model is applicable and the rule suggested in this paper can be followed in the selection of a translation method.

This study assesses the macroeconomic, energy and emissions impacts of solar photovoltaic (PV) deployment in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the period 2021–2030. This is accomplished by linking an energy and environmental sector augmented macroeconometric model with a power model and a distributed generation model. Furthermore, this study distinguishes between the macroeconomic, energy and emissions impacts of PV deployment at the utility and distributed generation scales. To the best of our knowledge, these two aspects make this work novel. We analyze three scenarios: (i) fully government-funded utility-scale PV deployment, (ii) half-government-funded utility-scale PV deployment and (iii) household-funded distributed-generation-scale PV deployment, with some government support alongside a business-as-usual (BaU) scenario.

However, methodological constraints have hitherto prevented large scale and systematic approaches. In this paper a novel methodology is presented, which documents the usefulness of the maps in the study of paleo-hydrology and thus serves a better understanding of the conditions for agricultural production under pre-drainage conditions. The methodology is developed based on eighteenth and nineteenth century maps from a 100 km2 study area in one stream catchment in East Jutland, Denmark. It combines information from two types of historic maps in order to correlate computed soil hydrology (wetness index) and recorded historic land-use. The calculated wetness indexes are derived from contour lines on topographic (military) maps (in Danish: Høje Maalebordsblade), whereas the spatial overlays are land-use classes from economic maps (in Danish: Matrikelkort - Original 1). This study demonstrates – for the first time - that the wetness index is explanatory for the agricultural suitable/non-suitable dichotomy (tilled land versus “wetland”: meadows, fens, and peat bogs) on the historic economic maps. Furthermore, the study shows that pre-industrial arable areas were stretched to their limits in respect to cropping wet soils in this agricultural dominated landscape. The study confirms the existing belief that the historic economic maps constitute the best available source of these mosaic-landscapes for periods before the intense subsurface tile drainage began. This finding opens for further methodological development and up-scaling using automatic feature detection, contour line extraction and text recognition of historical maps.

The global area of genetically modified (GM) crop production has considerably increased over the past two decades, with GM crops now cultivated in about 28 countries, accounting for over 10% of the world’s arable land. A 'novel food' is any food or substance that has not been used for human consumption to a significant degree within the EU before 15 May 1997. Since then, there has been over 90 novel foods authorisations approved for use by the EU. Novel foods and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are subject to a large variation in regulatory approaches around the world, for which many countries have specifically developed their own regulatory frameworks to control the placement of such products on their markets.

Culturing of animal cells was developed in the late 19th and early 20th century, when researchers worked out how to support the growth of cells in media in an ex-vivo environment(footnote). The technology has been used commercially in the medical products industry, notably to produce antibodies for use as new medicines and as reagents in diagnostics. Animal cell culturing has expanded into the food industry especially due to its benefit in promoting sustainability for example by freeing up global arable land used for livestock farming, with cultured meat predicted to enter the UK market in the coming year(s) and already on the market in Singapore. With this in sight, a systematic search protocol was devised to identify hazardous concerns that will help inform the risk assessment for any future applications for authorisation to the FSA. To note, the term ‘cultured’ is now referred to as ‘cultivated’ but the report uses the former term to keep in line with the search string used for the research. This report was limited to meat products manufactured from cultured animal cells. Even though majority of these hazards cross-over to other products such as fish, there is potential to evaluate hazards associated with fish/seafood products separately in the near future. This hazard identification considers the nature of potential hazards associated with the production of cultured animal cells; a novel technology that uses animal cells and cell culturing to produce a substance that resembles meat thus avoiding animal rearing for meat products or aquaculture. As cultured animal cells may pose new risks this report aims to ‘scope out’ the technology to gain an understanding of it and to identify the potential risks that this may pose
