Abstract (sommario):

My work is a symptom of my ongoing quest to achieve immortality. I perpetually attempt to make permanent the traces we leave behind and the impressions we make upon each other. I use the body to portray boundaries – between the skin and the heart, comfort and disquiet, holding and letting go. The objects I make serve both as an agent for physical contact and as the commemoration of an ephemeral interaction. I create personal fossils, revealing the interstices formed when two bodies come into contact with one another. I use materials that reference endurance and longevity to record transient spaces whose edges continuously shift and whose membranes are particularly tenuous. This work is an ongoing catalog of the people in my life and my persistent efforts to hold on to those fleeting connections.

Computer hand-held devices have the potential to revolutionize the methods of communication in the construction process. The compelling feature of hand-held computers is their ability to integrate GPS, video cameras, magnetometers and other sensors with an array of construction-relevant data layers in a highly portable form factor. This technology has the capacity to locate people in space, give them information relevant to who they are and where they are as well as allow them to input information into the system on the go. Through extensive research and interviews conducted with architects, construction managers and foremen, this thesis will assess problems inherent in the construction process and propose a new vision for methods of communication. This vision will be expressed through the design of a new hand-held application prototype.

Abstract (sommario):

This thesis contains three essays on entrepreneurship and close-held firms. The first essay examines the feedback role of crowdfunding, a new financing method that allows entrepreneurs to raise finance online directly from the public. Using a novel dataset from Kickstarter, I show that crowdfunding outcome signals to entrepreneurs the product market potential of their projects and guides entrepreneurs’ subsequent commercialization decisions. Exploiting weather-induced variation in pledged funds within unfunded projects (which receive no financing), I find that entrepreneurs who received more pledging are more likely to complete and commercialize their projects. Consistent with the real option value of crowdfunding feedback, entrepreneurs on Kickstarter launch riskier projects when crowdfunding becomes more costly relative to alternative financing. These results highlight the role of crowdfunding in improving the information environment faced by early-stage entrepreneurs. The second essay, co-authored with Jan Bena, studies how product market competition affects firms’ ownership structures. Using a large sample of closely held firms in eighteen European countries, we show that firms operating in more competitive environments have lower inside ownership and that the stakes of their outside shareholders are more dispersed. These results are explained by competition increasing the need to raise external equity and reducing private control benefits. Our findings suggest that, by changing corporate ownership structure, competition mitigates incentive misalignment among shareholders, leading to better firm performance and gains in economic efficiency. The third essay studies the effect of shareholder excess control rights on creditors. I show that excess control rights can benefit creditors despite its negative effect previously documented on minority shareholders. Using a sample of U.S. dual-class firms, I find that dual-class firms take less business and financial risk than similar single-class firms, consistent with controlling insiders’ emphasis on long-term survival to access ongoing private benefits of control. Such risk avoidance translates into lower borrowing costs for dual-class firms. Further, lenders seem to be able to use specific covenants to prevent potential expropriations by controlling insiders. These results suggest that the overall effect of excess control rights on firm value may not be as negative as we previously thought.

Abstract (sommario):

This thesis investigates applicable indoor navigation systems for the next generation of hand-held shopping scanners, on behalf of the company Virtual Stores. The thesis research and review applicable indoor localization methods and ways to combine and evaluate received localization data in order to provide accurate navigation without introducing any other worn equipment for a potential user. Prototype navigation systems was proposed, developed and evaluated using a combination of carefully placed radio transmitters that was used to provide radio based localization methods using Bluetooth or UltraWide Band (UWB) and inertial sensors combined with a particle filter. The Bluetooth solution was deemed incapable of providing any accurate localization method while the prototype using a combination of UWB and inertial sensors proved promising solution with below 1m average error under optimal conditions or 2.0m average localization error in a more realistic environment. However, the system requires the surveyed area to provide 3 or more UWB transmitters in the line of sight of the UWB receiver of the user at every location facing any direction to provide accurate localization. The prototype also requires to be scaled up to provide localization to more than 1 radio transmitters at the time before being introduced to the Fast moving consumer goods market.
Denna avhandling undersöker tillämpliga inomhusnavigationssystem för nästa generations handhållna shopping terminaler, på uppdrag av företaget Virtual Stores. Prototypnavigationssystem föreslogs, utvecklades och utvärderades användandes en kombination av väl utplacerade radiosändare användandes Bluetooth eller UltraWide Band (UWB) och tröghetssensorer i kombination med ett partikelfilter. Bluetooth-lösningen ansågs oförmögen att tillhandahålla någon exakt lokalisering medan prototypen som använde en kombination av UWB och tröghetssensorer visade sig vara en lovande lösnings med under 1m genomsnittligt fel under optimala förhållanden eller 2,0m genomsnittligt lokaliseringsfel i mer realistisk miljö. Systemet kräver emellertid att det undersökta området tillhandahåller 3 eller fler UWB-sändare inom synfältet för UWB-mottagaren hos användaren vid varje plats och riktning för att tillhandahålla ackurat lokalisering. Prototypen behöver skalas upp för att kunna bistå med lokalisering till mer än 1 radiomottagare innan den introduceras till detaljhandlen.

Abstract (sommario):

The recent increase of affordable virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays has led to many new video games and applications being developed for virtual reality environments. The improvements to VR technology has introduced many new possibilities, but has also introduced new problems to solve in order to make VR software as comfortable and as effective as possible. In this report, different methods of displaying text and receiving text input in VR environments are investigated and measured. An interactive user study was conducted to evaluate and compare the performance and user opinion of three different text display methods and four separate virtual keyboard solutions. Results revealed that the distance between text and user, with the same relative text size, significantly affected the ease of reading the text, and that designing a good virtual keyboard for VR requires a good balance of multiple factors. An example of such factors is the balance between precise control and the amount of physical exertion required. Additionally, the results suggest that the amount of previous experience with virtual reality equipment, and typing skill with regular physical keyboards, can meaningfully impact which solution is most appropriate.
Den senaste tidens ökning av prisvärda virtual reality (VR) glasögon har lett till en ökning av spel och applikationer som utvecklas för virtual reality miljöer. Förbättringarna av VR tekniken har introducerat många nya möjligheter, men även nya problem att lösa för att skapa VR mjukvara som är så bekväm och effektiv som möjligt. I den här rapporten undersöks och mäts olika metoder för att visa samt ta emot text i VR miljöer. Detta undersöktes genom utförandet av en interaktiv användarstudie som utvärderade och jämförde effektiviteten och användaråsikter kring tre olika metoder för att visa text samt fyra olika virtuella tangentbordslösningar. Resultatet visade att avståndet mellan användaren och texten, med samma relativa textstorlek, avsevärt påverkade lättheten att läsa texten, samt att designen av ett bra virtuellt tangentbord för VR kräver en bra balans mellan flera faktorer. Ett exempel på sådana faktorer är balansen mellan noggrann kontroll och den fysiska ansträngning som krävs. Resultatet tyder även på att mängden av tidigare erfarenhet med virtual reality utrustning samt skicklighet att skriva med vanliga fysiska tangentbord betydligt kan påverka vilka lösningar som är mest passande för situationen.

In this thesis research, we investigate the usability of hand-held display (Tablet PC) and wearable head-mounted display (Google Glass) interfaces and their effect on doctor-patient interaction during clinical ward round in the hospital. We looked at existing literature to identify existing research about our topic. Using a User Centered Interaction Design process we developed a prototype hybrid system that used both a hand-held and head-mounted display. An evaluation of this prototype with a hand-held system and a paper based interface was performed in a simulated patient room with 20 doctors and 5 patients. The participants were observed, surveyed, and interviewed about their experiences. Generally, the patients had a high satisfaction rate and felt the interfaces were not causing the doctors to lose focus on them. The doctors found the hand-held display by itself and existing paper-based interface to be the most usable and least distracting interfaces for accessing patient information during clinical ward rounds.

L'objectiu d'aquesta tesi és l'estudi de les diferents tècniques per alinear vistes tridimensionals. Aquest estudi ens ha permès detectar els principals problemes de les tècniques existents, aprotant una solució novedosa i contribuint resolent algunes de les mancances detectades especialment en l'alineament de vistes a temps real. Per tal d'adquirir les esmentades vistes, s'ha dissenyat un sensor 3D manual que ens permet fer adquisicions tridimensionals amb total llibertat de moviments. Així mateix, s'han estudiat les tècniques de minimització global per tal de reduir els efectes de la propagació de l'error.
The goal of this thesis is to study the different techniques used to register 3D acquisitions. This study detects the main drawbacks of the existing techniques, presents a new classification and provides significant solutions of some perceived shortcomings, especially in 3D real time registration. A 3D hand-held sensor has been designed to acquire these views without any motion restriction and global minimization techniques have been studied to decrease the error propagation effects.

Surgical robotic technology has evolved over the last few decades: from autonomous systems, to master-slave and cooperatively-controlled assistive robots. Whilst these various approaches have proven to be technically successful, clinical adoption of robotic technology remains moderate, largely as a result of the financial cost of such technology. An alternative approach that has been recently explored is the integration of mechatronic technology in to surgical devices that are held by the hands of the surgeon and are unattached to a grounding frame. These ungrounded hand-held devices exploit the existing dexterity of the surgeon's hand that allows them to be simpler, physically compact, lower cost, more easily integrated in to the surgical workflow and with fewer barriers to clinical translation. This thesis explores the use of mechatronic technology in ungrounded, hand-held surgical tools for the purpose of augmenting a surgeon's haptic perception. During microsurgery in particular, the tool-tissue manipulation forces are often so low that they cannot be perceived by the operating surgeon. This thesis initially proposes a hand-held device that can amplify these sub-threshold forces to magnitudes that can be perceived by human subjects. The mechatronic force amplification concept is further evolved for use in microsurgical forceps designs. In this case, haptic perception is diminished by the elastic spring return of the forceps which is significantly greater in magnitude than the micro-scale manipulation forces. Having investigated the force amplification concept, vibrotactile-based feedback of predefined force-thresholds is investigated. The concept is studied through the clinical exemplar of microneurosurgery: a device is proposed which can inform the operating surgeon if they are exerting excessive force based on a force threshold at which iatrogenic injury of neurovascular tissue is known to occur. Finally, an ungrounded force-feedback strategy is investigated for use with a hand-held device that incorporates position-based active constraints of the tool tip.

This report describes the work method, conclusions and result of my Master Degree in Advanced Product Design at Umeå Institute of Design. The project lasted 17 weeks and took place in spring 2013. The project was carried out in collaboration with Atlas Copco. The main purpose of this project is to explore the future of handheld demolition tools and how to carry out this extremely physically demanding work in an ergonomic and effortless way, while keeping productivity high and complexity low. I will look into the area of robotics, compact machines, and exoskeletons to get inspiration for supportive structures that could potentially semi- or fully automate some of the strenuous movements of today’s work, while trying to incorporate features to solve some of the other problematic aspects like the hazardous silica and asbestos dust spreading in the air and/or detecting hidden pipes and cables to avoid unnecessary interior damages. The result will be a conceptual product meant for the future market of 2025.6

Abstract (sommario):

This dissertation describes the development of a portable, hand-held tonometer for measurement of the intraocular pressure through the eyelid. The primary use of such device will be by people diagnosed with the eye disease glaucoma. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world and is asymptomatic to the patient in its early stages. This allows it to remain undiagnosed for prolonged periods, causing irreversible damage to the affected person's vision. Elevated intraocular pressure is the main risk factor associated with the development of glaucoma, and is currently the only symptom that is treatable for the slowing down or stopping of the progression to blindness caused by the disease. The effectiveness of the medications or procedures aimed at reducing the pressure to below risk levels is currently monitored through visits to the ophthalmologists' offices, which makes the frequent monitoring of the pressure inconvenient, expensive and sometimes impossible. Due to the variation of the pressure throughout the day and during different activities or food and beverage intake, the portability of the device is important in order to allow the user to carry it with them and take measurements as frequent as needed. The option to perform the measurement through the eyelid avoids direct contact with the eye, eliminating possible discomfort, the use of anesthetics, and the risk of contamination.Several designs and measuring concepts are evaluated using a custom made pressure regulation system. A series of prototypes have been built and tested and the results are reported in the respective sections of the dissertation. The final concept selected for the measurement technique was based on multiple force probe indentation and a custom MEMS-based force sensor for it was designed and tested.The main contributions of this dissertation are the design, fabrication and test of the prototype devices and the MEMS force sensors. The obtained results and experience described here can serve as a platform for further optimization and improvement of the device, and eventual development of a prototype capable of performing clinical research studies and passing FDA approval for home and clinical use.

Abstract (sommario):

Expectations and perceptions of expectations for the role of Head Nurse were investigated in four teaching hospitals of McGill University, Montreal, Canada. Head Nurses, nurses, Directors of Nursing, and doctors were respondents. The study examined three questions: What are the expectations held for the Head Nurse within groups? Are there differences in expectations held for the Head Nurse across groups? Are there differences between expectations of nurses and doctors for the Head Nurse, and Head Nurse perceptions of expectations of nurses and doctors?
Factor analysis was performed on responses of Head Nurses, nurses, and doctors separately. Expectations within groups were determined by frequencies, means, and standard deviations. Differences in expectations between groups were tested by chi-squares.
Conceptualizations of the Head Nurse as manager, clinician, patient care co-ordinator, and teacher were supported. Five factors, identified as doctor's helper, clinical leader, communication link, determiner of quality of care, and manager, accounted for 67 to 82% of variance in all groups. All groups agreed that the Head Nurse should be a determiner of quality of care given. Significant differences in expectations between groups were found in regard to the Head Nurse as doctor's helper, and clinical leader, and in regard to other activities related to patients, staff, and the unit. Head Nurses tended to overestimate nurse expectations for the Head Nurse, and underestimate doctor expectations for the Head Nurse.

Abstract (sommario):

The present study was designed to elicit the mental models or implicit theories held by adults about everyday problem solving. Twenty-four adults, age 25-60, from a wide range of educational and occupational orientations, were interviewed in pairs. Research questions were posed to draw forth the type of information which would allow the researcher to identify the content of these mental models. The integrated framework on Induction proposed by Holland, Holyoak, Nisbett, and Thagard (1986) was adopted as a conceptual framework for the study, by virtue of its use for ill-defined problems and its application to social science research. The study establishes the existence of mental models or implicit theories held by adults about everyday problem solving. The results identified the predominance of the interpersonal and emotional factors salient to this genre of problem solving. Individual differences, communication and problem identification were highlighted as the most significant and difficult areas upon which success was contingent. Degrees of self-confidence and habitual usage of a system or method were seen to be significant factors, often correlated with experience and education. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Pollution and environmental concerns require further improvements in engine technologyas well as research of alternative fuels. Users of handheld products are directlyexposed to the exhaust gas and thus to the occurring emissions, which cancause significant damage. Pursuing to reduce emissions is therefore a vital task.The European commission proposed a renewable energy directive, that claims abiofuel share of at least 6,8% by 2030 and a reduction of first generation fuel butan increasing of second generation fuels. Ethanol is up to now the most commonsource of renewable alternatives in gasoline blends. Isobutanol has several advantagesover ethanol and can be produced as a second generation biofuel.This thesis aims to get a better understanding on how isobutanol influences theemission and combustion in small two-stroke engines and furthermore what effectdifferent isobutanol blends with neat gasoline and alkylate have on the engine performance.Different isobutanol blends with neat gasoline as well as alkylate fuel have beenused and analyzed.This thesis has via an experimental study shown, that hydrocarbon as well as carbonmonoxide emission increased with increasing isobutanol percentage. Hence, nitrogenoxides emission decreased with isobutanol. Lower cylinder and exhaust temperatureswere measured with isobutanol blends. Through cylinder pressure measurements,the mass fraction burned, mass fraction burned 50% and rapid burningangle could be analyzed. It has shown that isobutanol blends reach a mass fractionburned of 50% slightly later and have a greater rapid burning angle.

Abstract (sommario):

This dissertation examines a counterintuitive artistic imperative that emerged from the struggles of Leo Tolstoy and Vladimir Nabokov with an aesthetic problem of Kantian provenance. These two authors are widely considered to be opposed in their vision of art, but I show that their aesthetics in fact converge upon the same goal: to grant the reader a particular kind of freedom. These authors shared the Kantian view that aesthetic enjoyment requires that the reader not be constrained by any interest or concept. This feeling of freedom, they believed, is threatened not only when a reader looks to an artwork to satisfy his appetites (and thus remains bound by his sensuous interests), but also when he employs the artwork for a further intellectual or creative purpose of his own (and thus remains bound by his concepts). On the latter point, they concluded that too much interpretive license, rather than liberating the reader, actually leaves him trapped within his preexisting conceptual framework. To ensure that their own works grant the freedom necessary for genuine aesthetic pleasure, they developed narrative strategies that (in an apparent paradox) restrict how we read the text.

Le misure vibrazionali sono un punto di riferimento nella dinamica strutturale. Lo stesso vale anche per la diagnostica dei guasti e la valutazione della qualità del prodotto in vari campi dell'industria, dalle linee di produzione dei componenti ai prodotti finiti. Queste misure sono solitamente eseguite utilizzando accelerometri piezoelettrici collegati alla struttura in esame. Il collegamento è solitamente realizzato tramite adesivi o cera d'api, magneti o perni filettati. Tuttavia, il processo di installazione di questi sensori può richiedere molto tempo e, in alcuni casi, può essere irreversibile o addirittura non consentito. Le sonde vibrazionali di tipo hand-held sono state ampiamente utilizzate in passato, anche se le loro prestazioni (ad es. gamma di frequenze di lavoro e accuratezza complessiva) risultano inferiori rispetto alle installazioni fisse. Tuttavia, la diffusione dei robot nell'ambito dell'industria 4.0, caratterizzata dall'obiettivo di produzione a zero difetti, ha motivato un nuovo interesse per questo tipo di soluzione. Le sonde di misura vibrazionali tipo hand-held sono costituite da componenti che devono garantirne la linearità entro un determinato intervallo di frequenza e il contatto costante con la struttura in prova. Inoltre, le vibrazioni spurie, dovute alla manipolazione da parte di un operatore umano o di un robot, devono essere evitate introducendo un elemento di disaccoppiamento. Normalmente, vengono impiegati materiali convenzionali come la gomma e il silicone, per via del loro comportamento viscoelastico. Tuttavia, questi materiali possono subire modifiche al loro comportamento dinamico quando soggetti a condizioni ambientali diverse. Lo scopo di questa tesi è dimostrare il vantaggio nell'adottare metastrutture come elementi di disaccoppiamento nelle sonde vibrazionali di tipo hand-held. La metastruttura sviluppata si basa su una ripetizione periodica di celle unitarie caratterizzate da una forte separazione modale. Ne consegue, quindi, un ampio intervallo di frequenze di funzionamento.
Vibrational measurements are a landmark in structural dynamics. This is true also for fault diagnosis and product quality assessment in various fields of industry, from production lines of components to finite products. These measurements are usually performed using piezoelectric accelerometers attached to the structure under investigation. The connection is usually made using adhesive or bees-wax, magnets or threaded pins. However, the process of installing these sensors can be time-consuming and, in some cases, irreversible or even not allowed. Hand-held vibration probes were widely used in the past, even though their performances (i.e. working frequency range and overall accuracy) were lower compared to fixed installations. However, the spread of robots in the framework of industry 4.0, characterized by the zero defect manufacturing target, caused a new interest in this solution. Hand-held vibration measurements probes are made of components that must guarantee linearity within certain frequency range as well as constant contact with the structure being tested. Furthermore, spurious vibrations, due to the handling by a human operator or a robot, need to be avoided introducing a decoupling element. Normally, conventional materials, like rubber and silicon, are exploited, taking advantage of their viscoelastic behavior. However, these materials may undergo changing on their dynamic behavior when subject to different environmental conditions. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate de advantage of adopting metastructures as decoupling elements in hand-held probes. The design of the metastructure developed is based on a periodic repetition of unit cells characterized by a strong mode separation and, thus, a wide frequency bandgap.

Due to high competition on the market the industry aims at increasing the efficiency in their assembly production line. The production cycle time is determined by many factors such as operation time at each production step, the reliability of the tool and so forth. Many of the assembly applications are performed with hand held power tools which mean that a person, called operator, is holding the tool. Hence, physical stress is acting on the operator during tightening procedures and is therefore an important issue. As a result, development of better power tools is always needed. The goal with this thesis work is to build a simulation model of a hand held assembly tool. The simulation is to be use for development and evaluation of the present computer controlled tightening strategies. The model includes control unit, tool, joint and operator. Based on the model the aim is also the exploit the possibilities to improve the tightening algorithms in an automatic control fashion. The control structure investigated is MPC, (Model Predictive Control). The result is that the simulation model with good correlation describes the system and can therefore be used as an aid in the development of tool components and software. The proposed tightening control strategy, MPC, show excellent performance regarding operation tine and the reduction of operator energy input. The drawback is that the robustness of the controller is somewhat limited due to fast process time. Also the real-time implementation as to be further developed.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation signal is extremely vulnerable to intentional and unintentional interference. Increased dependence on GPS by military users has created a need to quickly detect and locate interference at its source. Current methods for detecting and locating GPS interference sources employ a network of multiple sensors to identify interference. The data collected from sensors is then sent to a remote centralized processing station and analyzed to determine the location of the interference source. Although this method has demonstrated effectiveness in this endeavor, it introduces latency between the time of detection at the sensor, and the location of the source. The intent of this thesis is to investigate whether a portable hand held interference detection system can provide more timely detection and location information to provide the actionable intelligence to the disadvantaged GPS users.
