The object of this research was to study the compounds of Northern Sotho.
In Chapter 1 the problem, aims and the method were established
In Chapter 2 a survey of the general bibliography on the subject was given.
This study is mainly structural of nature, but preliminary remarks about the
T.G.G. on the subject were also taken into account. A broad discussion an
the structural view was given In terms of General Linguistics as applied to
the African languages.
In Chapter 3 language structure and language system was discussed in order
to establish a framework wherein the compound could be studied according
to the different language disciplines.
In Chapter 4 the position of the compound in relation to the other language
symbols were established by applying the different word tests of Van Wyk.
After it was established that the compound is a word, the linguistic disciplines
for example morphology, syntax, semantics and phonology, were appalled in
order to describe the compound scientifically.
In Chapter 5 the compound was studied morphologically. Its different
morphemes were identified. This was followed by describing the syntactic
structures o f the compound. It was established that the underlying structure
of the compound is a word group.
In this process it was found that the syntactic processes, for example reduction
and substitution played a major role In the establishment of the
compound.
In Chapter 6 the semantics of the compound was studied. Paradigmatic and
syntagmatic semantic characteristics of the compound in Northern Sotho were
identified. It was established that the paradigmatic semantic characteristics
of word correlates are inhibited by the syntagmatic relation in order to bring
about an unambiguous interpretation. The metaphor was found t o be even
more profound in compounds than in non-compounded words.
In Chapter 7 the phonological aspects of the compound were discussed. It
was discovered that occlusivation played a major role in the establishment of
the compound.
In Chapter 8 the statistics of 2472 compounds which were compiled in the
appendix, were given. It was found that the noun and the verb stem were
the most productive components in the formation of compounds.
A summary and conclusions were given in Chapter 9. The conclusion was
reached that the compound certainly has a place in the language system and
that it belongs to the sub-system of the word on grounds of its morphological,

Thesis (MTh (Practical Theology and Missiology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die hipotese van hierdie studie is dat die identiteit van die NG Kerk Stellenbosch-Noord geskuif het van gemeente wat gerig was op haar voortbestaan as ideologies-gedrewe gemeenskap binne bepaalde bevolkingsgroep, na gemeente wat missionaal begin dink het op grond van nuwe verstaan van wie God is, en in die lig hiervan, wat kerk behoort te wees. Sy het haar roeping nuut ontdek in en deur haar betrokkenheid met ‘die ander’ wat in haar omgewing in nood verkeer. Drie teologiese konstrukte is gekies om die besluitnemingsproses in die tydlyn van die gemeente teologies te evalueer, naamlik: • die onderskeiding van wie die Drie-Enige God is, bepaal die manier van kerkwees; • die werking van die Heilige Gees in die onderskeiding van die missio Dei; en • die inkarnasie van Jesus as riglyn vir die uitleef van die missio Dei. Die bespreking van die tydlyn van die gemeente vorm sentrale deel van die studie. Die teologiese konstrukte sowel as die makro- en mesokontekste is bespreek en dan in verband gebring met die tydlyn om te evalueer in hoeverre die besluitnemingsproses ideologies of missionaal gedrewe was. Verder is etnografiese studie in die gemeente gedoen om die identiteit van die gemeente aan die einde van 2007 te bepaal. Hierdie studie het methodologies konstruktiewe replikasie verskaf vir die bevindinge in die tydlyn, en die hipotese dat daar wel paradigmaskuif plaasgevind het, as waar bewys. Die skuif hét plaasgevind: van ideologies-gedrewe gemeente, na gemeente wat die missio Dei onderskei om die missiones ecclesciae te vorm.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The hypotheses of this study is that the identity of the Dutch Reformed Church Stellenbosch North shifted from a congregation focusing on her existence as an ideologically driven community within a specific population group, to a congregation starting to think missionally from a new understanding of the Triune God. In the discernment thereof, she discovered what the church should be. She discovered her vocation anew through her involvement with the need of the ‘other’ in the neighbourhood. Three theological constructs were chosen, namely: • the discernment of who the Triune God is defines the manner of being church, • the work of the Holy Spirit in the discernment of the missio Dei; and • the incarnation of Jesus as guideline for the praxis of the missio Dei. The three theological constructs were used to evaluate the decision making processes in the congregation. The discussion of the timeline of the congregation forms a central part of this study. The three theological constructs as well as the macro and meso contexts are discussed, and then related to the timeline to evaluate if the decision making processes were ideologically or missionally driven. Furthermore, an ethnographic study was conducted in the congregation to establish her identity towards the end of 2007. This study gave a methodological constructive replication of the findings from the timeline and further proved the hypotheses correct that a paradigm shift did take place. The paradigm did shift from an ideologically driven congregation to one that discerned the missio Dei and became the missions ecclesiae.

Face ao crescimento do sector da restauração verificado nos últimos dois anos em Portugal, e à diversificação de necessidades e desejos dos consumidores, foi detetada a oportunidade de desenvolver um menu adaptado ao segmento infantil. Desta forma, foi elaborado um estudo de atratividade para o consumidor criança e para o decisor mãe, no sentido de validar a pertinência de introduzir no mercado um menu de sushi para crianças. Este estudo recorre a uma abordagem de métodos mistos, qualitativa e quantitativa, através da utilização de entrevistas semiestruturadas, focus group, da observação participante e questionários para a recolha de dados primários, que foram aperfeiçoados com uma recolha de dados secundários para complementar.
This research project describes the development process and the launching of a kid´s menu for the Portuguese sushi food chain NOORI. Due to the growth of the quick service restaurant sector in Portugal and the diversification of consumer needs and desires, an opportunity has been identified for developing a menu adapted to the child segment in this quick service restaurant chain. To this end, a study was developed to assess the attractiveness of this menu for the kids and their mothers, in order to validate the relevance of introducing a sushi kid´s menu in this market. This study draws on a qualitative and quantitative approach, using mix methods, namely semi-structured interviews, focus group, participant observation and questionnaires to collect primary data. This data were further enriched with a collection of secondary data.

Thesis (PhD (Education))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006.During the past twelve years of democracy health care services in South Africa have been influenced by political, social and economic change. As a result of the transformation of health care services and the change of political policy, the focus on primary health care increased. During the early stages of the transformation of health care services stakeholders realized that in order to provide an extensive health care service specialized training is required. Various educational institutions provided formal and informal programmes in order to meet the new challenges of the nursing profession. Although minimum requirements of the content and clinical practice have been established by the nursing council, the mode of presentation, costs, duration and type of qualification awarded to clinical nursing practitioners differed substantially. Uniformity in terms of programme content was lacking, neither were any scientifically founded attempts made to establish whether these programmes fulfilled the needs of the student in the rural community. Although a variety of training programmes exist the number of trained clinical nursing practitioners is still inadequate. In addition training is focused on the urban community. The objective of the research was to determine the opinion of the rural nurse on clinical nursing education, and to develop a training framework based on their input which would meet their needs. This research was conducted from an explanatory-descriptive paradigm. The case study was used as research design. A literature study on the development of primary health care both internationally and nationally was done. The literature study revealed the development of training programmes for clinical nurses. Chapter three of the literature study is dedicated to the theoretical aspects of the design of a student centered training framework for the adult student. A student centered training framework has created from data gathered via questionnaires completed by clinical nurses and semi-structured interviews with semi-qualified nurses. Semistructured interviews have also been conducted with the supervisors of nurses working in clinics and community health centres in the Northern Cape. The conclusion that respondents showed a positive attitude towards training in clinical nursing was encouraging. The majority of respondents indicated that they would welcome an additional qualification which will improve their knowledge and would result in better patient care. The respondents highlighted staff shortages, financial constraints and family responsibility as the main obstacles towards these qualifications. During the research it became clear that no formal training is currently available in Kimberley. This is as a result of the absence of mentors. Although the respondents have limited access to computers they indicated that they would prefer computer supported training in conjunction with physical contact sessions. The research indicated that no formal policy on the training of clinical nurses exists in the rural Northern Cape. In the absence of a training framework the research further contributed towards the development of a student centered training framework for clinical nurses in rural Northern Cape. The research succeeded in highlighting the necessity for formal policy on the training of clinical nurses in rural Northern Cape.

Uppsatsen undersöker feministisk argumentation i två artiklar publicerade av Expressen. Syftet har varit att ta reda på hur diskussionen om ett slags normerande feministisk kvinnlighet tar form. Analysen är uppdelad i två delar: i den första används Lloyd Bitzers teori om den retoriska situationen samt en pragmadialektisk teori och metod. Den information som utvinns i analysens första del kontextualiseras sedan med hjälp av olika genusvetenskapliga ingångar. I den första delen skisseras argumentationens utgångspunkter och sedan dess argumentationsstruktur. I analysens andra del knyts den ena artikelförfattarens argumentation till en radikalfeministisk tradition, och den andra till en mer postmodern feministisk hållning. Argumentationsstrukturen var till stor nytta för att identifiera hur den första artikelförfattaren räknar upp flera egenskaper som ett kvinnligt subjekt inte kan inneha om hon ska erhålla rätten att kalla sig för feminist. Uppsatsen diskuterar sedan feministers möjligheter att skava, göra fel, och på så sätt tänja gränserna för vad som anses vara respektabelt. Också möjligheter för en bredare feminism som kan inkludera fler och en eventuell dekonstruktion av begreppet feminism är ämnen som uppsatsen argumenterar för. Slutligen resoneras kring de faktorer som samverkar för att skapa normer som både inkluderar och exkluderar kvinnliga subjekt.

Consumers play an important role in the productive functioning of the economy. They form an
integral part of the daily flow of transactions of all organisations in a business-oriented society.
Analysing the consumer is therefore important to determine what they buy, how much they buy,
who does the shopping as well as how and where they do their shopping.
A marketing strategy is a combination of decisions on target marketing and the marketing mix.
An organisation's marketing strategy rests on the following:
o The analysis of specific consumer preferences and needs;
o Based on this, marketing management decides on a product which will satisfy these
consumer preferences and needs (product);
o Marketing management also decides on a price which the consumer would be prepared and
able to pay (price);
o Marketing management distributes the product when, where and in the quantities the
consumer desires (distribution); and
o Marketing management communicates the message about the product (marketing
communication).
This study was aimed at doing a profile analysis of wine consumers in the Northern Cape
Province. In order to realise these objectives, specific attention was given to the four elements
of the marketing mix, namely product, price, distribution and communication.
The research was limited to the six most important cities/towns of the Northern Cape Province.
The venues where the population of wine consumers would be found were divided into three
strata, namely liquor stores, restaurants and supermarkets. The venue locations within each
stratum was drawn on the principle of random sampling. Five questionnaires were completed
for each location and a total of 465 questionnaires were completed. The questionnaire has face
validity and both its design and the data processing was done with the help of the Statistical
Consultation Service at the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education.
The most important findings for each of the elements of the marketing mix were:
o Product. The majority of wine consumers (86%) indicated that they prefer to buy wine in a
glass bottle;
o Price. Wine consumers, of all races and income groups, indicated that price is an important
indicator of the quality of wine;
o Distribution. Wine consumers indicated that 49% prefer self-service, while 39% prefer self-selection
with the aid of sales personnel and only 12% of the wine consumers prefer a
counter service; and
o Communication. Wine consumers indicated that the different types of media motivate them
differently to make purchase decisions. These referred to point of sales advertising (39%),
television (29%), magazines (15%), newspapers (11%), radio (5%) and movie theatre (1%).
The study was concluded with proposals about the preferences of wine consumers in the

The aim of this thesis is to determine the market value of the company KOH-I-NOOR HARDTMUTH a.s. from publicly available information from the perspektive of an unspecified buyer. Financial and strategic analysis were made on the basis of the company data for 2005 -- 2009. Based on the coclusion of the analysis was set the financial plan for the next 5 years. Because the firm meets the assumption of so-called going concern principle, the resulting equity value was determined by income based methods, discounted cash flow and net income capitalized.

This dissertation presents a historical and analytical study of the organ works of Anthoni van Noordt. Van Noordt's Tabulatuurboeck is one of the most important music publications in mid-seventeenth-century Netherlands. It gives unique, valuable information on organ playing of its time. The process of discrete analysis has led to the identification and exploration of many details, such as extensive use of pedal, the reliance of the composer on rhetorical principals of composition, and his integration of the Italian and German principals of ensemble techniques. The dissertation is divided into three major parts. The first part contains chapters on van Noordt's biography based on available archival documents as well as a chapter on the organ and its role in seventeenth -century Amsterdam. The second part is solely dedicated to the Tabulatuurboeck examining the physical and technical features of the publication including the style of the publication, the letter and staff notation, hand positions, and rhetorical components. Finally, the third part studies the music and its peculiar characteristics with separate chapters on the variations and fantasias.

The financial situation and financial economy are to be controlled by a whole complex of indicators and their values looked on in the time progress and context so that the evaluation outcome may reflect the whole economic state of the company and enable to point out causes of the actual situation. If the firm shall be economically flourishing, the financial analysis has to be a part of the complex of the company's financial management because it provides a feedback between the expected effect of managing decisions and experience. The elaborated analysis is focussed on detection of weak and strong points of the firm. The goal of my diploma thesis was to elaborate a financial analysis containing my theoretical experience. Despite of the fact that the financial analysis does not bring a complete answer to all questions the company have been asking themselves, it is a great constribution to the evaluation of the past development, detection of problematical areas and prediction of the future development.

Pupils experience a great deal of stress in our modern society.
The level of stress among our high school pupils is alarming.
The principal, as the chief executive of the school, has an
obligation to manage stress in schools.
Without the guidance of someone with the necessary training,
pupils tend to resort to defence mechanisms which is a negative
way of handling stress. The principal who has acquired
knowledge of stress management skills, will be able to guide
such pupils in overcoming stress. Thus managing stress and not
allowing stress to manage them.
In this study, five defence mechanisms and its symptoms have
been discussed briefly as a negative means of handling stress.
On the other hand, ten stress management skills have been
discussed more extensively.
An empirical research has been conducted. The aim was to
determine the level of stress currently experienced by high
school pupils. Secondly, the aim was to determine how
principals relate to pupils who experience stress and the
methods they use to help such pupils.
The empirical research pointed out some problem areas:
* The vast majority of principals are not qualified to
relate to or guide such pupils in overcoming stress.
* The majority of schools are situated in the country
with low enrolment figures such as between 201-300
pupils.
* Due to the above mentioned figures, such schools do
not qualify for the post of a guidance teacher.
Certain conclusions and recommendations have been made

Magister Artium - MAIn 1980· het: die Noord-Amerikaanse Katolieke biskoppe 'n pastorale brief oor Marxisme laat verskyn. In gesprek met Hulpbiskop Peter Rosazza van Hartford het twee Franse priesters, klasmaats van hom, die volgende opgemerk: Hulle het gewonder, hoekom die biskoppe 'n brief uitgebring het oor Marxisme wat tog nie 'n brandende saak ("issueII) was nie. Hoekom nie 'n brief oor kapitalisme nie, was hulle vraag? (Berryman 1989:75). Dit het daartoe gelei dat Biskop Rosazza in 1980 by die biskoplike vergadering voorgestel het dat 'n pastorale brief oor "kapitalisme" opgestel moes word. Hierdie mosie is aanvaar en het dan gelei tot die pastorale brief oor die ekonomie van die VSA geti tel, Economic Justice for All: Pastoral Let ter on Catholic Social Teaching and the U.S.Economy. 'n Vyfman biskoplike kommissie het in 1981 aan hierdie opdrag begin werk en met verloop van tyd besluit om in plaas van op die kapitalistiese sisteem te fokus, eerder die ekonomie van die VSA te ondersoek en te beoordeel. In November 1984, na wye konsultasies, besprekings en konferensies het die eerste publieke konsepdokument verskyn. Curriculum 2005 was originally implemented in grade 1 in 1998. In 2002 it was implemented in grade 9. Similar problems and questions, which arose during the initial implementation, arose again during the implementation in grade 9. Implementation gave rise to many questions and uncertainties. Only in October 2001 was it finally decided to implement the curriculum for grade 9 in 2002. The result was that publishers, the national as well as provincial education departments as well as schools were not ready for the implementation in January 2002. This treatise aims to determine the amount of support offered to educators and the degree of uncertainty still being experienced by them. Information regarding these unnecertainties and problems has been obtained from educators by means of questionnaires, circulated to 38 schools in the Northern Cape Province, offering Natural Science. This sampling of schools is representative of schools offering Natural Science in the region. Data regarding the uncertainties from educators have been obtained from the SOC (Stages of Concern) questionnaires of Hall, George and Rutherford. The rest of the questionnaire concerned the biographical information regarding the educators as well as the support that educators have received during the implementation of the learning area. It emerged from the questionnaire that educators understand the importance of a new Natural Science curriculum for SA. They are however sceptical regarding the hasty manner in which the learning area was implemented; the fact that no textbooks or educational teaching aids were available prior to implementation was of concern. Educators are similarly concerned about the inadequate training prior to implementation and lack of support during implementation. Educators are also concerned about the administrative liability that the new curriculum will bring about.

During the first decades of twentieth century public schools in North America were
still, with regard to their spirit and direction, very similar to the ideal of the Christian
school. Gradually, however, a process of secularization began to take place.
Public education reached a nadir as a result of the influence of the influence of secular
humanism. Through legislation God (represented by Scripture reading, prayers and
religious instruction) was banned from public education and humanist education came
into conflict with parents who wanted their children to have a Christian education.
During the past three decades there has therefore developed a trend in the USA of
private schools springing up all over. The reason for this can be sought in the
widespread dissatisfaction with public education. The New Right Movement is a
Christian conservative movement working towards a Christian way of doing things in
all spheres, but for purposes of this investigation I concentrated on the New Right
Movement's support for Christian educative teaching.
In the RSA radical constitutional • changes are taking place. From the side of
government the flow of information about the existence and nature of Christian
education in future is very thin. A new government of national unity will probably
not be pertinently directed at and directed by Christian norms and values, but will
probably be guided by humanist and revolutionary views. Everything points towards
Christian educative teaching not being protected by law in future. Concomitant with
that, spiritual superficiality, moral decay, falling educational standards and cultural
and life view diversity among the South African population constitute a fertile soil for
secular humanism in the long term to strengthen its grip on Christian educative
teaching. The two catchwords of secular humanism, viz. freedom and democracy,
already figure strongly in the fields of politics and education in the RSA.
The literature survey made possible the following conclusions:
* The Christian religious ground motif should still play the decisive role in
educative teaching.
* Parental involvement and the right to have a say remain necessary on an
on-going basis to maintain the link between the parental home and the school in
the field of life view.
* A unitary education system, which ignores the religious and cultural diversity
of the inhabitants of the country, cannot be justified.
It is recommended that the secular-humanist onslaught in the RSA can be countered by
sustained Christian educative teaching, the founding of private schools with a strong
input by parents, and the energy and enthusiasm of devoted Christian teachers.Thesis (MEd)--PU vir CHO, 1994

Thesis (MEd)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Reading is an important skill for the 21st century and are one of the cornerstones of learning. Research shows an escalating concern about the reading ability of South African learners. In an attempt to improve the literacy levels of learners, the Northern Cape Department of Education, issued a circular to schools instructing them to implement a daily reading period of 30 minutes. It is required of schools to indicate the reading period on the timetable and reading must be formally instructed. The purpose of the study was to determine the perspectives of teachers regarding the use of the reading period and school libraries. It is hypothesized that teachers do not provide enough exposure to learners regarding reading. Secondly It is hypothesized that teachers do not a create a reading culture or foster a positive attitude towards reading, because they ignore the reading period and do not use the library as a resource. A mixed method approach was followed, where both quantitative and qualitative research designs was used. The study consisted of a literature review and an empirical study. The empirical study was conducted at two high schools in the Namaqua District. The data was collected by means of a questionnaire which was completed by 16 Grade 8 and 9 teachers. Focus group interviews were also conducted with the participating teachers. An analysis of the empirical data showed the following : - According to the results the majority of the teachers are aware of the reading period. - The teachers indicated that the reading period is not implemented at both of the schools. - The teachers did not receive any guidance or support from the Northern Cape Education Department to assist learners with reading problems. - The data showed that both schools do have a school library. - From the responses of the teachers it seems that the library resources are old and insufficient. - The data indicated that the teachers do not use the school library as a resource to promote teaching and learning. - The learners are not exposed to the library to assist them with curriculum assignments. The research confirmed the research hypothesis that the reading period is not implemented and that the school library is not used by the teachers to promote the literacy levels and academic performance of the learners.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Lees is ʼn noodsaaklike vaardigheid in die 21ste eeu en is een van die boustene van leer. Navorsing in Suid-Afrika dui daarop dat leesprobleme in Suid-Afrika besig is om ernstige afmetings aan te neem. Om die leesvermoëns en geletterheidvlakke van leerders te verhoog, het die Noord-Kaapse Onderwysdepartement (NKOD) ʼn omsendskrywe uitgestuur, waarin skole verplig word om daagliks ʼn leesperiode van 30 minute in te stel. Hierdie leesperiode moet op die skool se rooster aangedui word. Binne die leesperiode moet lees op ʼn gestruktureerde manier aangebied word. Die breë navorsingsdoelstelling van die studie is om ondersoek in te stel na die perspektiewe van opvoeders rakende die gebruik van die leesperiode en die skoolbiblioteek. As navorsingshipotese is eerstens gestel dat opvoeders nie aan die leerders genoeg blootstelling rakende lees gee nie. Tweedens is gestel dat opvoeders nie ʼn kultuur van lees skep nie of ʼn positiewe houding teenoor lees by die leerders kweek nie, want hulle verontagsaam die leesperiode en ignoreer die biblioteek as hulpbron. In hierdie studie is daar gebruik gemaak van ʼn gemengde navorsingsontwerp, waarvolgens beide kwantitatiewe en kwalitatiewe navorsingsmetodes gekombineer word om die navorsingsprobleem beter te verstaan. Die studie het bestaan uit ’n literatuurstudie en ’n empiriese ondersoek. Die empiriese ondersoek is by twee geselekteerde hoërskole in die Namakwa-distrik gedoen. Die data is versamel deur ‘n vraelys wat voltooi is deur 16 graad 8- en 9- opvoeders van die geselekteerde skole. Fokusgroeponderhoude is ook met die deelnemers gevoer. ʼn Ontleding van die empiriese data het getoon dat: - die meerderheid van die opvoeders kennis dra van die leesperiode. - die leesperiode by nie een van die twee skole geïmplementeer word nie. - die opvoeders geen leiding en ondersteuning vanaf die Noord-Kaapse Onderwysdepartement ontvang het rakende hulpverlening aan leerders met leesprobleme nie. - beide skole beskik oor ’n skoolbiblioteek. - die skoolbiblioteek se bronne onvoldoende is en meestal verouderd is. - die opvoeders nie die skoolbiblioteek gebruik om onderrig en leer te bevorder nie. - die leerders ook geen blootstelling kry aan die skoolbiblioteek om take binne die kurrikulum te doen nie. Die navorsing bevestig die navorsingshipotese dat die leesperiode nie geïmplementeer word nie en dat die opvoeders nie die skoolbiblioteek as ʼn bron gebruik om die geletterdheid en akademiese vordering van leerders te bevorder nie.

Thesis (MA)- University of Stellenbosch, 2004.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of the present study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the Family Sense of Coherence Questionnaire (FSoC) for use among Northern Sothos. Antonovsky and Sourani developed the FSoC-questionnaire to measure the sense of coherence of families. The family sense of coherence is based on the individual sense of coherence construct, which was developed by Antonovsky. According to Antonovsky, families with a strong sense of coherence will function better than families with a weak sense of coherence. Therefore family functioning was used as criteria to validate the external validity of the FSoC-questionnaire. Olson, Russell and Sprenkle developed the Family Attachment and Changeability Index (FACI-8) to measure family functioning according to the Circumplex model. For the purpose of this study the two questionnaires were translated to Sepedi (the language of the Northern Sotho). The reliability of the two questionnaires was assessed by means of Cronbach-alpha coefficients. The construct validity of the two questionnaires was assessed by means of JOreskog's Goodness of Fit Index (GFI). The statistical analysis was done with Statistica 6 software. The results drawn from the present study indicates that the FSoC-questionnaire is not a reliable and valid instrument to measure families' sense of coherence among Northern Sothos. Significant high correlations with the FACI-8 however, indicated that the FSoC might be considered for use among Northern Sothos, if only the total scores are taken into consideration. The FACI-8 however, proved to be a reliable and valid instrument to measure family functioning according to the Circumplex model among Northern Sothos. The conclusions drawn from the present study are that the FACI-8 is a suitable instrument for use among the Northern Sothos, whereas the FSoC-questionnaire is not.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van die huidige ondersoek was om die psigometriese eienskappe van die Gesinskoherensie-vraelys (FSoC) wat deur Antonovsky en Sourani ontwikkel was, vir gebruik onder Noord-Sothos te bepaal. Om hierdie doeleindes te bereik, was die Gesinsfunksioneringsvraelys (FACI-8) wat deur McCubbin, Thompson en Elver ontwikkel was, as 'n kriterium gebruik om die eksterne geldigheid van die FSoC-vraelys te valideer. Die FACI-8 meet gesinsfunksionering volgens die Kontekstuele-model van gesinsfunksionering, wat deur Olson, Russell en Sprenkle ontwikkel was. Volgens Antonovsky sal gesinne wat oor 'n sterk ontwikkelde koherensiesin beskik, beter funksioneer as gesinne wat oor 'n swak ontwikkelde koherensiesin beskik. Gevolglik was gesinsfunksionering as 'n maatstaf van gesinskoherensie gebruik. Die vraelyste moes eers na Sepedi (die taal van die Noorcl-Sotho) vertaal word, alvorens die vraelyste afgeneem kon word. Die betroubaarheid van die vraelyste was deur middel van Cronbach-alfa koêffisiênte bereken. Die konstrukgeldigheid van die vraelyste was deur middel van JOreskog se Passingstoets bepaal. Die statistiese verwerkings was deur middel van die Statistica 6 rekenaarprogram behartig. Die resultate van die huidige ondersoek dui daarop dat die FSoC-vraelys met omsigtigheid benader moet word vir gebruik onder Noord-Sothos. Die FSoCvraelys het nie bevredigende betroubaarheids- en geldigheidsindekse gelewer nie. Die FSoC-vraelys het wel eksterne geldigheid getoon, wanneer dit met die FACI-8 gevalideer was. Die FACI-8 het betroubare en geldige metings van gesinsfunksionering volgens die Kontekstuele-model onder Noord-Sothos in die huidige ondersoek gelewer. Die gevolgtrekkings wat op grond van die huidige ondersoek gemaak word, is dat die FSoC-vraelys nie bruikbaar is onder Noorcl-Sothos nie, terwyl die FACI-8 wel gebruik kan word om gesinsfunksionering onder Noord-Sothos te meet.

The aim of this research is threefold:
• to determine the nature of job satisfaction;
• to determine the factors which influence the job satisfaction of principals at secondary schools; and
• to determine which factors influence the job satisfaction of principals at secondary schools in practice.
In order to achieve these aims a literature study and empirical study were undertaken.
The literature study was based on primary and secondary sources. A DIALOG
computer search was undertaken with the keywords such as: work motivation; work
satisfaction, teaching conditions; teacher motivation, secondary school and principal.
The nature of job satisfaction was then discussed. Once the management factors that
influence work satisfaction of principals were identified, they were grouped and
discussed under the following headings:
• factors that centres in the principal himself;
• factors situated within the school;
• factors at management level;
• factors within the community; and
• factors within the teaching career.
A questionnaire was compiled from existing questionnaires (that of Hillebrand, 1989;
Esterhuizen, 1989; Du Toit, 1994; Engelbrecht, 1996 and the Minnesota Importance
Questionnaire, 1985).
All principals at secondary schools in the Northern Cape Province, excluding schools of
Correctional Services, were taken as target group in this research. The questionnaires
were sent to principals within the target group. The information was statistically
analized with the aid of a computer after with it was interpreted. Subsequent to these
results recommendations were made.
The empirical study showed that principals at secondary schools experience
reasonable work satisfaction but that there are still certain factors which should be
addressed.
Certain recommendations are made on the basis of the empirical investigation. The
most important recommendations are that the problem of work security should be
addressed, rationalisation and assessment of teachers should be planned carefully and
the communication between the school and the Education Department should be

AFRIKAANS: In hierdie studie is daar gelet op MIV en VIGS en die geslagsrolle van die Noord-Sotho/Tswana-sprekende vrou in die Limpopo Provinsie. Daar is spesifiek gefokus op watter MIV- en VIGS-verbandhoudende risiko’s voorkom rondom die geslagsrolle van die Noord-Sotho/Tswana-sprekende vrou in die Limpopo Provinsie. Sewe relevante geslagsrolle van die vrou is geïdentifiseer vir ondersoek, en het die vrou as individuelewese, seksuelewese, huweliksmaat, moeder, versorger, enkelouer en broodwinner ingesluit. Verbandhoudende aspekte van hierdie rolle is ook ondersoek en het mishandeling van die vrou, die vrou se opvoeding, geloof, kultuur, gesondheid, geslag en spesifieke beradingsbehoeftes ingesluit. Waar geslag ‘n sosiale- en kulturelestruktuur is en ook kultuur-spesifiek is, was dit van belang om die vrou se geslagsrolle en die verbandhoudende aspekte daarvan binne die vrou se relevante kulturelekonteks te ondersoek. Die navorsingsmetodologie vir hierdie studie is duidelik omskryf en uiteengesit, waarna verskeie literatuurhoofstukke volg. Die literatuurhoofstukke fokus op MIV en VIGS as medieseverskynsel en die beradingsaspekte wat daarmee verband hou. In die literatuurhoofstukke is daar ook gelet op die Afrika-kultuur en geslagsrolvorming, waarna die sewe geslagsrolle van die vrou en die verbandhoudende aspekte daarvan bespreek is. Die literatuurhoofstukke voorsien die nodige agtergrond wat aanduidend is van spesifieke MIV-risiko’s wat deur Afrika-vroue in hul geslagsrolle beleef word. Navorsingsbevindings vir hierdie kwalitatiewe studie is met behulp van tabelle voorgestel wat volledig bespreek is, ten einde te bepaal watter spesifieke MIV-risiko’s deur Noord-Sotho/Tswana-sprekende vroue in die Limpopo Provinsie beleef word. Navorsingsbevindings vir hierdie kwalitatiewe studie is met behulp van tabelle voorgestel wat volledig bespreek is, ten einde te bepaal watter spesifieke MIV-risiko’s deur Noord-Sotho/Tswana-sprekende vroue in die Limpopo Provinsie beleef word. Hierdie bevindings het getoon dat Noord-Sotho/Tswana-sprekende vroue in die Limpopo Provinsie veral kwesbaar is vir MIV waar hierdie vroue ‘n tekort aan mag het om te onderhandel vir veilige seksuele-omgang en kondoomgebruik. ‘n Raamwerk vir kultuursensitiewe MIV- en VIGS-berading is ontwikkel, en bestaan uit inligting bekom vanuit die empiriese ondersoek, praktykervaring asook die navorser se kennis van relevante literatuur. Die raamwerk vir kultuursensitiewe MIV- en VIGS-berading is op wyses aangebied wat as gepas beskou word vir die spesifieke probleme of behoeftes van die vrou, en bestaan uit afmerklyste, kolomme en gevallestudies. Die raamwerk is ook saamgestel sodat dit deur die maatskaplike werker, MIV-berader en ander lede van die multidissiplinêrespan benut kan word tydens hulpverlening aan MIV-positiewe Noord-Sotho/Tswana-sprekende vroue. Ten slotte is ‘n algemene samevatting, gevolgtrekkings en aanbevelings gemaak na aanleiding van relevante bevindings vanuit die studie. Die navorsingsvraag vir hierdie studie in geheel is beantwoord deurdat die empiriese ondersoek sowel as die raamwerk vir kultuursensitiewe MIV- en VIGS-berading, die MIV- en VIGS-verbandhoudende risiko’s rondom die geslagsrolle van die Noord-Sotho/Tswanasprekende MIV-positiewe vrou in die Limpopo Provinsie duidelik geïdentifiseer en logies gegroepeer het, en gevolgtrekkings en aanbevelings gebied het. ENGLISH: This study considered HIV and AIDS and the gender roles of Northern Sotho/Tswana speaking women in the Limpopo Province. Specific focus was placed on HIV and AIDS related risks surrounding the gender roles of Northern Sotho/Tswana speaking women in the Limpopo Province. Seven relevant gender roles were identified for investigation; these include women as individual beings, sexual beings, wives, mothers, caregivers, single parents and breadwinners. Related aspects of these roles were also investigated and include the abuse of women, education, religion, culture, health, gender and specific counselling needs. It was of importance to examine gender roles and the related aspects in the woman’s relevant cultural context since gender is seen as a social and cultural construct and is also culture-specific. The research methodology for this study was clearly defined and outlined. The literature chapters focussed on HIV and AIDS as medical phenomenon and related counselling aspects. The literature chapters also considered the African culture and gender role development, the seven gender roles of women and aspects related to these. The literature chapters provided the necessary background which is indicative of the specific HIV risks which are experienced by African women in their gender roles. Research findings for this qualitative study were presented using tables which were fully discussed in the study in order to determine the specific HIV risks experienced by Northern Sotho/Tswana speaking women in the Limpopo province. These findings showed that Northern Sotho/Tswana speaking women in the Limpopo Province are particularly vulnerable to HIV as these women experience a lack of power to negotiate for safe sex and condom use. A framework for culturally sensitive HIV and AIDS counselling was developed and consists of information obtained from the empirical investigation, practical experience and the researcher’s knowledge of relevant literature. The framework for culturally sensitive HIV and AIDS counselling was presented in a manner which is suited to the specific problems and needs of these women and consists of tick-mark lists, columns and case studies. The framework was also compiled in such a manner that it may be utilised by the social worker, HIV counsellor and other members of the multidisciplinary team during the counselling of HIV positive Northern Sotho/Tswana speaking women. A general summary, conclusions and recommendations were finally made following the relevant findings of the study. The research question for this study was fully answered in that the empirical investigation as well as the framework for culturally sensitive HIV and AIDS counselling identified, logically grouped and made conclusions and recommendations about the HIV and AIDS related risks surrounding the gender roles of Northern Sotho/Tswana speaking women in the Limpopo Province. This study showed that each of the seven gender roles of women as well as the related aspects of these roles are associated with specific HIV risks which are experienced on a physiological, social, psychological, economical and cultural level by Northern Sotho/Tswana speaking women in the Limpopo Province.Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2011.

Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Elektrisiteit is ʼn basiese bron van energie in hedendaagse huishoudings en besighede. Die behoefte na deurlopende elektrisiteit neem toe terwyl die huidige elektrisiteitsverskaffer, ESKOM, ook nie aan die huidige vraag na elektrisiteit kan voorsien nie. Verdere beperkings is die infrastruktuur. Die infrastruktuur is nie so ontwikkel dat elektrisiteit aan 100 persent van die bevolking verskaf kan word nie. Alle plase het nie toegang tot die huidige ESKOM roosterstelsel nie of dit is onprakties om ʼn dienslyn te bou vir die gerief van elektrisiteit. Gevolglik was die meeste boerderybedrywighede in die verlede afhanklik van dieselkragopwekkers. Die gebruik van sonenergie het egter aantrekliker geword en het moontlik meer ekonomies en prakties geword en bied ook ʼn deurlopende krag opsie. Sonstralingsvlakke in Suid Afrika is die hoogste in die wêreld. Die Noord-Kaap word ingesluit in daardie areas in SA wat uiters geskik is vir PV aanlegte. In lande soos Ethiopië en die VSA is sonenergie met PV-tegnologie met groot sukses aangewend in landbouomstandighede vir die voorsiening van elektrisiteit wat ook in SA met sukses aangewend kan word met die uiters geskikte sonbestralingsvlakke. Die grootste voordeel van sonenergie is die oorvloedige beskikbaarheid van die energiebron in SA. Verder is dit volhoubaar, omgewingsvriendelik, hernubaar en heeltemal gratis. Daar is geen bewegende onderdele nie, gevolglik is daar geen geraasbesoedeling nie en is die bedryfskostes van ʼn sonenergie stelsel baie laag. Die nadeel van sonenergie is dat PV-aanlegte slegs elektrisiteit kan opwek wanneer die son skyn. Energiebergingsisteme is nodig om hierdie nadeel te oorbrug of ʼn aanvullende energiebron soos wind moet gebruik word om die tekort aan te vul. Kapitaalspandering is die grootste hindernis in die oprigting van hernubare energiestelsels aangesien dit op een stadium spandeer moet word. Sonenergie is die gewildste energiebron binne die landbousektor in die Noord-Kaap en word deur 88.57 persent van die respondente gebruik terwyl slegs 28.57 persent van die respondente dieselkragopwekkers beskikbaar het as rugsteun fasiliteit vir elektrisiteitvoorsiening. Die belangrikste redes waarom daar oorgeskakel is na sonenergie, was om deurlopende elektrisiteit te verseker en die vermindering van tradisionele energieverbruik. Die studie toon dat sonenergie, oor ʼn 15 jaar leeftyd, ʼn derde van die koste van fossielbrandstowwe kos, alhoewel daar groter aanvanklike kapitaalspandering betrokke is wat as ʼn struikelblok gesien word. Die statistiek wat in die ondersoek versamel is dui daarop dat sonenergie suksesvol aangewend word om te voorsien aan die elektrisiteitbehoeftes van die respondente binne die Noord-Kaap geografiese gebied. Daar is egter geen twyfel dat sonenergie suksesvol, effektief, doeltreffend en ekonomies aangewend kan word as ʼn plaasvervanger vir energie uit fossielbrandstof, binne die landbousektor, op klein en medium skaal in die Noord-Kaap.
