Abstract (sommario):

Other authors have compared commercially available night vision aids used by visually impaired persons who have night blindness. The Wide Angle Mobility Lantern (WAML) is usually the more recommended device. This article suggests that other night vision aids, as yet unmentioned in the literature, may be equally effective and sometimes preferred to the WAML. Lights in the Streamlight series are comparable in price and size to the WAML and are more widely available. Personnel working with school-aged children who are night blind are encouraged to provide them with information about, and hands-on experience with, various night vision aids.

To be or not to be is the question that Hamlet thinks about day and night. Gold or Bitcoins is an inescapable choice for investors. With the ever rising and falling price of gold and bitcoin, making good trading decisions is of paramount importance. In this paper, we systematically investigate how data can be used to quantify the factors that influence trading and make the final decision. We build time series with the prices of gold and bitcoin for the past five years. We obtained forecast curves with excellent fit by seasonality analysis and ARIMA time series model forecasts.

From the design space explored for series architecture plug-in hybrid electric vehicle transit buses by the authors, one powertrain and control design is selected to provide maximum benefit to investment ratio. Sensitivity analysis is performed for this powertrain configuration. Vehicle parameters (including vehicle mass, coefficient of drag, coefficient of rolling resistance), usage parameters (drivecycle, annual vehicle miles traveled, number of recharges in a day, recharge current, and battery temperature), and economic parameters (fuel price, motor price, and battery price) are varied to understand their effect on the number of required battery replacements, net present value, payback period, and fuel consumption reduction. It is shown that battery temperature has the most significant impact, particularly on the number of battery replacements and net present value and, as such, must be well controlled in practice. It is shown that to maintain the battery at 20°C, for ambient temperatures between −5°C and 45°C, 0.8–1.8% excess fuel is required across all drivecycles for the considered plug-in hybrid electric vehicle transit bus powertrain configuration. In addition, the well-to-wheel emissions of criteria pollutants resulting from the usage of this plug-in hybrid electric vehicle transit bus in Indiana and California are calculated and compared with the conventional transit bus, using the GREET (Greenhouse Gases, Regulated Emissions and Energy Use in Transportation) Model. With a single over night charge, the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle transit bus operating in either Indiana or California produces 50% less CO2 and other greenhouse gases as compared to a conventional transit bus.

Abstract (sommario):

Rats and mice were studied for changes in meal-taking structure in a closed operant food economy, in which the consummatory or unit prices for food were increased. In experiment 1, as food price increased, male rats modestly decreased the number of meals per day and increased mean meal size. Female rats were similar to males but had smaller meal size and, at low costs, took more meals per day. In experiment 2, male and female B6 mice reduced food intake as price increased, accompanied by decreased meal number without change in meal size. They showed grazing-like behavior in the first part of the night. In contrast, we report in experiment 3, a large increase in intake and meal size during the final trimester of pregnancy. In experiment 4, we report that CD1 male mice subjected to a unit price series performed comparably to rats, and not like B6 mice. Other CD1 mice were tested using an interval schedule, and we found that mice were able to adapt eating patterns to greatly increased time demands without compromising total intake. Data are discussed in terms of the intercalation of food acquisition with global patterns of activity. Such interactions of organism and food environment are in particular need of mechanistic investigation.

The primary objective of this study is to develop an empirical model that accounts for factors affecting the demand for international tourist hotels, and that enables demand estimation and projection in the context of the Seoul metropolitan area. International hotel demand for a metropolitan area such as Seoul is hypothesized as a function of the price of hotel rooms, the number of events such as international conventions, seminars and exhibitions; and total trade volume of the destination country. The dependent variable is the number of bed nights occupied by foreign guests in a given period. The study discusses a procedure for correctly estimating a time-series regression model. Consideration is given to the possibility that errors in the model are generated by a time-dependent process more than by a first-order autoregressive process. The findings of the study revealed that own price, the number of events and the trade volume directly affected demand. Some factors were proven to affect the demand indirectly through adjustment of price in the short run. Further the study revealed that demand is a function of the entire market mechanism, which is the inter-relationship of demand and price among different market segments.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the difference between the daytime (open-to-close) and overnight (close-to-open) returns of CSI 300 index and its derivative futures. Design/methodology/approach The paper explores the difference between the daytime and overnight time returns by using nonparametric techniques. Moreover, investigation on some factors such as short selling, trading rules, risks are made to seek the sources of the day and night effects based on a large number of empirical analysis. In the end, further analyses on daytime and overnight returns are given by the use of high-frequency data and linear regression technique. Findings The authors show that the daytime returns of CSI 300 index are no less than its overnight returns, while the daytime returns of CSI 300 index futures are no more than its overnight returns, even after removing the heteroscedasticity of the researched time series. Specifically, the PM returns (13:05 to close) play a quite important role in the intra-day time. The findings also suggest that the unique “T+1 trading rule” in China may be a reason that incurs the lower opening price in the morning and the higher closing price in the afternoon, resulting in the statistically significant differences between the daytime and overnight returns. Practical implications The findings are of great importance for investors to decide when to buy and sell stock and futures portfolios in Chinese financial markets. Originality/value This study empirically analyzes why there the higher daytime returns and the lower overnight returns exist in the Chinese stock markets from different aspects and contributes the existing literature on day and night effects because of periodic market closures.

<p><em>Wingko Babat is a kind of cake made from young coconut, glutinous rice flour and sugar. Wingko is very famous on the north coast of the island of Java. This cake is often sold at train stations, bus stations or also in cake shops for family gifts. Wingko is usually round and usually served warm and cut into small pieces. Wingko can be sold in the form of large rounds or also in the form of small cakes wrapped in paper. The combination of sugar and coconut makes this cake delicious. Wingko has an important role for the economic growth of this region. Currently wingko is a popular food in Babat and Semarang with different brands and sizes being sold. Marketing strategy is one way to increase sales volume through a series of continuous ways. The research was conducted by the manufacturer of wingko tripe Padangsari Banyumanik, Semarang. Methods of data collection is done by interview and observation. The results of the research show that the marketing strategy carried out by the Padangsari wingko babat producer is to sell to other sellers through resellers and reduce the selling price to the reseller, and change the wingko babat icon from a train to a night bus which has the characteristics of other wingko icons.. Through the 4P marketing strategy, namely price, product, promotion, and place. Through the 4P marketing strategy, it is hoped that sales from Wingko Babat will increase more than before the Covid-19 pandemic</em>.</p>

Grid-connected low voltage photovoltaic power plants cover most of the power capacity installed in Italy. They offer an important contribution to the power demand of the utilities connected but, due to the nature of the solar resource, the night-time consumption can be satisfied only withdrawing the energy by the national grid, at the price of the energy distributor. Thanks to the improvement of storage technologies, the installation of a system of battery looks like a promising solution by giving the possibility to increase auto-consumption dramatically. In this paper, a model-based approach to analyze and discuss the performance and the economic feasibility of grid-connected domestic photovoltaic power plants with a storage system is presented. Using as input to the model the historical series (2008–2017) of the main ambient variables, the proposed model, based on Stochastic Hybrid Fault Tree Automaton, allowed us to simulate and compare two alternative technical solutions characterized by different environmental conditions, in the north and in the south of Italy. The performances of these systems were compared and an economic analysis, addressing the convenience of the storage systems was carried out, considering the characteristic useful-life time, 20 years, of a photovoltaic power plant. To this end the Net Present Value and the payback time were evaluated, considering the main characteristics of the Italian market scenario.

The price alone suggests that it is aimed at academic libraries, although serious researchers into elder mistreatment may decide that it is a necessary addition to a personal library as a book of reference.The Preface explains the origin of this series on Advances in Bioethics: ‘The magnitude of violence in the United States has become an increasingly grim reality for many Americans’. Walker and Maltby (1997), in their presentation of European research on ageing, recently drew attention to the sense of fear of walking out at night that older people have in all the member states of the European Union. The same appears to be true in the USA as well. The preface catalogues figures for 1992: 207,000 rapes, over 20,000 murders and 690,000 robberies. This has led the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to focus attention on violence and health, seeking to understand violence-related behaviour and its consequences. In 1993, the NIH set up the Panel of NIH Research on Antisocial, Aggressive and Violence-related Behaviours and their Consequences. The Panel included experts on ethics, criminal justice, medicine, behavioural and biological research, public health, epidemiology, anthropology, nursing, sociology, psychology and psychiatry. The Panel's purpose was to ‘evaluate the NIH research portfolio in terms of its relevance, adequacy and responsiveness to social and ethical concerns.’ It has been necessary to give this background in order that the book may be seen in context.

The history of the novel has undergone a series of changes and embraced other literary genres. This led to the emergence of several new types of novel and the readers’ familiarity with it, due to the vitality and impact of this literary genre on other literary genres, as it sometimes crosses the boundaries of other literary genres, and merges with other fields of the human sciences, such as history. Hence, the novel’s readers get acquainted with a new type of novel, which is (the historical novel), i.e. a narration of a historical event or the mention of a historical figure in a literary melting pot such as a novel, that is, in parallel with the novelist narrating the historical event, he does not ignore the techniques (methods) of writing novel and its technical elements. Rather, while narrating this history, the novelist seeks to present a special taste to the reader in order for the reader to feel that what he is reading is not a pure history, but rather a historical narrative, presented through novel’s techniques and its artistic elements. The examples of this type of historical novel in Kurdish literature have not been noticeably taken care of, but the attempts of some novelists in this field are subject to examination and worthy of study, including the novelist (Jan Dost), who wrote a number of historical novels, where we studied the two novels (Meernama) and (Three Steps and a Gallows). Meernamah's novel deals with the Kurdish historical figure (Ahmad Khani), and his struggle to educate his people, as he tried to unify the Kurdish princes for the sake of independence and obtain the rights of his people, striving for coexistence and accepting different religions and nationalities. The novel (Three Steps and a Gallows) deals with the last night in the life of (Sheikh Saeed Piran) as a historical figure, as the novel returns via flashback to the three stages of his life.

Harold Fosters Prinz Eisenherz gehört zu den wenigen Serien, in denen der Protagonist nicht auf einen Lebenszeitpunkt »eingefroren« ist, sondern allmählich älter (und erfahrener) wird. Das geschieht kaum merklich von Album zu Album. Doch in Band 3 der Werkausgabe, Ritter der Tafelrunde, begegnet er in der Höhle der schönen Hexe einem Greis, der personalisierten Zeit. Er versucht mit dem Alten zu kämpfen, doch der besiegt ihn und zeigt ihm, wie er als alter Mann aussehen wird: abgemagert, hohlwangig, weißhaarig - ein »Schatten des einst so stolzen Prinzen«. (27 f.) Hans Tischler hat das Thema auf parodistische Weise aufgegriffen: Wenn die Comic-Helden so alt wären, wie sei eigentlich sein müssten (MAD 211). Klingt hier eher die Angst vor dem Alter an, das uns Kraft, Vitalität und Lebensmut nehme, so setzte eine Bilderbuch-Bildgeschichte 1988 einen anderen Akzent: Meine Oma hat schwarze Haare. Mary Hoffman und Joanna Burroughes erzählen von einer aktiven Oma, die - ganz anders als die alten Märchenomas mit weißem Haar und altmodischer Kleidung - fit und aktiv ist, sich modisch kleidet. Und der Opa, der sich auf der letzten Seite sehen lässt, sieht auch nicht aus, wie das Klischee den Opa zeichnet. Beide Extreme, aktive alte Menschen, die sich nicht treiben lassen, die neue Herausforderungen suchen, gerne mit anderen Generationen mal anecken aber auch suchen, mit allen klarzukommen, wie auch alte Menschen, die durch Krankheiten körperlicher wie geistiger Natur in ihrer Energie, ihren Möglichkeiten, ihrem Willen eingeschränkt sind, haben als Akteure ihren Platz in Bildgeschichten gefunden. Von witzig-trotzigen Geschichten, wie sie die Reihe Die Alten Knacker (Paul Cauuet/ Wilfird Lupane) erzählt, von überraschenden Erfahrungen im Alter, von denen Pascal Rabaté in Bäche und Flüsse berichtet, vom Opa, der als Superman unterwegs (Philip Waechter) ist bis zu umfangreich angelegten Bildromanen, die sich mit den problematischen Seiten des Alterns, mit Krankheit, mit Pflege, mit den Problemen, die die Generationen miteinander haben, auseinandersetzen, wie z. B. Kopf in den Wolken (PacoRoca), Können wir nicht über was Andres reden (Roz Chast) oder das unabwendbare altern der gefühle (Zidrou & Aimé de Jongh) oder auch Besondere Jahre. Ein Abschied in Bildern ( Joyce Farmer). Der Tenor vieler Geschichten ist, die Leserschaft für das Thema Alter zu sensibilisieren, Verständnis zu schaffen, Einblick zu geben in eine Lebensspanne, in der die meisten Leserinnen und Leser selbst nicht sind, die aber auch sie erwartet. Bei allem Ernst bleibt auch der Humor nicht auf der Strecke. Zahlreiche Cartoons (die ja oft so etwas wie Ein-Bild-Geschichten sind) spiegeln diesen witzigen Blick. Ralf König (Herbst in der Hose) spielt selbstironisch mit dem Altwerden, ohne die Probleme lächerlich zu machen. Dass Altern uns alle betrifft, und dass niemand von uns weiß, wie er das Alter meistern wird, hat die Bildende Kunst mit ihren zahlreichen Altersbildern unterschiedlicher Thematik schon immer aufgezeigt. In diesen Zusammenhang - vom Cartoon bis zur Bildenden Kunst - eingebunden, sollen ausgewählte Comic-Beispiele, die sich differenziert mit dem Thema Alter auseinander setzen, vorgestellt werden.

Financial time series are highly nonlinear and their movement is quite unpredictable. Artificial neural networks (ANN) have ample applications in financial forecasting. Performance of ANN models mainly depends upon its training. Though gradient descent-based methods are common for ANN training, they have several limitations. Fireworks algorithm (FWA) is a recently developed metaheuristic inspired from the phenomenon of fireworks explosion at night, which poses characteristics such as faster convergence, parallelism, and finding the global optima. This chapter intends to develop a hybrid model comprising FWA and ANN (FWANN) used to forecast closing prices series, exchange series, and crude oil prices time series. The appropriateness of FWANN is compared with models such as PSO-based ANN, GA-based ANN, DE-based ANN, and MLP model trained similarly. Four performance metrics, MAPE, NMSE, ARV, and R2, are considered as the barometer for evaluation. Performance analysis is carried out to show the suitability and superiority of FWANN.

Abstract For many years the standard edition was de Selin court ‘s and Darbishire ‘s Poetical Works of William Wordsworth, which followed the text of 1849-50, the last prepared with Wordsworth ‘s supervision. Modern editorial work has sought to establish the earliest versions of the poems; see for example The Ruined Cottage and The Pedlar in]. Wordsworth (1969); Gill ‘s ‘Original Salisbury Plain ‘; and ‘A Night-Piece ‘ and ‘The Discharged Soldier ‘ in Darlington (1970). The Cornell Wordsworth Series (1975-) brings ‘early Wordsworth into view ‘ through editorial reconstruction and inclusive presentation of manuscript sources and printed texts. This ambitious series is an indispensable research resource, although it has provoked controversy on the grounds that it misrepresents Wordsworth ‘s intentions for his work and obscures his later career. De Selincourt ‘s edition of The Prelude (1926) printed for the first time the poem completed in May 1805 alongside the poem published (after Wordsworth ‘s death) in July 1850.

Abstract Richard Rodgers’s Victory at Sea score was a landmark moment in TV scoring, the first time a major Broadway songwriter contributed instrumental themes for a documentary series. Equally stellar names, mostly from the classical field, followed: Norman Dello Joio for Air Power, George Antheil for 20th Century, Morton Gould for World War I. Composers Elmer Bernstein and Lalo Schifrin contributed to David L. Wolper’s 1960s documentaries, including Bernstein’s National Geographic fanfare, and other major composers (Alex North for Africa) followed. Walter Scharf scored dozens of National Geographic and Jacques Cousteau specials, and In Search Of stretched the boundaries of documentary programming, including synth-based scores. News themes at the networks started out simply but eventually became more important, attracting Oscar-winning composers: Henry Mancini for election night music, John Williams at NBC, James Horner at CBS, Bill Conti at ABC. The chapter discusses the origins of the famous Olympics fanfares and themes for PBS documentaries, including a famous theme for The Civil War. Entertainment Tonight boasted a tune everyone can sing; and reality shows demanded a different kind of musical score (largely library based).

Abstract Felix went to Diisseldorf determined to raise the standard in both ecclesiastical and theatrical music, but, as so often happens to reformers, he soon found more difficulties than he had expected. He first turned his attention to the church music, deciding that ‘no appropriate epithet exists for the music which has hitherto been given here’. He introduced works by Palestrina, Leo, Lassus and others. This was not particularly well received by the citizens of Diisseldorf, but worse was to follow. At the theatre he announced a series of ‘classical’ performances, beginning with Don Giovanni; this involved a raising of the prices, and there were disturbances on the first night. Felix insisted on a public apology, which was eventually made, and for a time things ran smoothly.

Abstract This essay considers Walt Whitman’s series “How I Get Around at 60, and Take Notes,” in which the poet experiments with a method that might be termed “idle criticism.” In 1879, Whitman wrote to a friend about a new manuscript called “Idle Days and Nights of a Half-Paralytic.” Over subsequent months, the concept morphed into the more expansive autobiography Specimen Days (1882), characterized in its own pages as the “most wayward, spontaneous, fragmentary book ever printed.” However, prior to its appearance, Whitman also published “How I Get Around at 60, and Take Notes”—somewhat closer to the focused 1879 ambition—as a six-part series in The Critic in 1881. This series deserves recognition for the contribution it makes to a genealogy of disability theory. “Idle criticism” is, then, a variation on aesthetic criticism that elevates life with paralysis as a generative vantage point oriented toward exhilarating, enlightening, and erotic encounters with oneself, the natural world, and art.

"Max Ramsay is the cardboard cutout Ozzie clod who warns his son, Shane, against dating Daphne because she works as a stag-night stripper. His main fear seems to be the effect the newly arrived Daphne might have on the price of his property. (Smurthwaite 1986) As Grahame Griffin notes, “the closing credit sequence . . . is a series of static shots of suburban houses singled out for display in a manner reminiscent of real estate advertisements” (Griffin 1991: 175). Small business abounds in Neighbours: a bar, a boutique, an engineering company, with no corporate sector and no public servants or bureaucrats apart from a headmistress. 10 Writing skills must be acknowledged. It is very hard to make the mundane interesting, and indeed to score multiple short plot lines across a small number of characters (twelve to fifteen), as is appropriate to representing the local, the everyday, the suburban. As Moira Petty remarks, Neighbours is successful because “it’s very simple. The characters are two dimensional and the plots come thick and fast. The storylines don’t last long, so if you don’t like one, another will come along in a few days” (quoted by Harris 1988). These ten textual reasons doubtless contribute, differentially across different export markets, to Neighbours’s success in many countries of the world. Its wholesome neighborliness, its cosy everyday ethos would appear to be eminently exportable. However, lest it be imagined that Neighbours has universal popularity or even comprehensibility, there remain some 150 countries to which it has not been exported, and many in which its notions of kinship systems, gender relations, and cultural spaces would appear most odd. The non-universality of western kinship relations, for example, is clearly evidenced in Elihu Katz and Tamar Liebes’s comparison of Israeli and Arab readings of Dallas (Katz and Leibes 1986). And, indeed, there are two familiar territories to be considered later – the USA and France – in which it has been screened and failed. Significantly, the countries screening Neighbours are mostly anglophone and well familiar with British, if not also with Australian soaps. But why does Neighbours appeal so forcibly in the UK? In the UK market, I suggest, five institutional and cultural preconditions enabled Neighbours’s phenomenal success. Some of these considerations are, of course, the sine qua non of Neighbours even being seen on UK television. The first precondition was its price, reportedly A$54,000 per show for two screenings; with EastEnders costing A$80,000 per episode, Neighbours was well worth a gamble (Kingsley 1989: 241). Scheduling, too, was vital to Neighbours’s success. This has two dimensions. Neighbours was the first program on UK television ever to be stripped over five weekdays (Patterson 1992). BBC Daytime Television, taking off under Roger Loughton in 1986, while Michael Grade was Programme Controller, was so bold in this as to incur the chagrin of commercial". In To Be Continued..., 112. HOST is an innovative vehicle concept suitable for the urban transport of both persons and goods. To lower the impact of mobility on the cities, cleaner vehicles are not enough: an integrated passenger and freight strategy must be adopted. Cleaner vehicles must be specifically designed for the purpose to be better than conventional ones under any aspect, including costs. To lower such costs and to start up the Low Polluting Vehicles (LPV) market the versatility of LPVs has to be enhanced. HOST aims at developing a fully versatile low-cost LPV concept. Versatility is achieved by making HOST vehicle modular and cost reduction is obtained by using the same vehicle for different purposes, simply changing different cabins on the same chassis. The main four tasks HOST is conceived for are: • Nocturne collective taxi; • Daytime car sharing services; • Daytime freight collection and distribution; • Nocturne garbage collection. The four mentioned services are not the only ones HOST may be used for, but are those for which it is specifically studied. Such choice is made for one very simple reason: all of the four tasks belong to the same family of “municipal services”. Using the same chassis to operate all the different services is feasible and can finally create the critical mass of final users, so to reach convenient prices. The four services chosen, two addressing passenger mobility and two addressing freight mobility, go all in the way of reducing city mobility impact. Car sharing and nocturne collective taxi systems, if integrated with public transport, can increase its attractiveness, pushing more people to use it. Freight pick-up and delivery and garbage collection need a low polluting alternative to be re-organised, so to become sustainable. The powertrain layout and the possibility to easily vary the platform main dimensions enable HOST to be equipped with very different bodyworks, which let the car manufacturer provides both private and public bodies, such as municipalities or urban mobility authorities. More in detail the energy system is all included in the HOST platform and it is conceived in shaped boxes, so that its modules become inter-exchangeable. A series hybrid configuration let HOST to be equipped with an internal combustion engine (ICE) coupled with an energy recovery system (batteries+supercapacitors), anyhow is already designed to utilise fuel cells (FC) powered by pure hydrogen just changing the energy module (and the tank), being this last the final purpose of the concept design. Thanks to these two solutions HOST is able to run as a zero emission vehicle for a limited period (ICE) or for the whole driving cycle (FC). A full drive-by-wire solution is adopted and the only mechanical connections between the cabin and the platform will be a specifically designed mechanical anchorage, these solutions will allow the easy installation/removal of any cabin. The vehicle has four wheel drive capability (4WD), thus featuring a good grip even on slippery roads. The four electric motors (one per wheel) allow an easy traction control, ensuring stability and safety. The chassis has a four wheel total steering (4WS) configuration, that enables the vehicle to rotate around its vertical axis as well as the to shift horizontally. These characteristics give HOST decisive advantages for the missions it has been conceived for. The 4WS capability gives to the vehicle easy manoeuvring in little streets in the cities centres and they are useful for the accurate positioning to be easily accessible by wheel chairs, during freight loading/unloading operations and while it runs as a garbage truck. Only a modular vehicle featuring the reusing concept can cover contemporarily all the selected services: one vehicle chassis with different sizes interchangeable energy generation modules and different bodies, depending on the service it is used for. Such concept, other than abating the environmental impact, will allow: • a reduction of costs: one chassis can fit several bodies compensating the higher cost of a low environmental impact energy and traction system; • a reduction of occupied space: the vehicle is always in use, night and day; • a reduction of waste materials, increasing their lifetime; • an increased life of vehicles, due to the possibility of changing bodies and energy generation modules; • traffic congestion reduction: using and reusing one vehicle for several services.
