Abstract (sommario):
John Cotton Dana, who died in 1929, had been Librarian of the Newark Public Library since 1902. Among many other achievements, he was responsible for the development of remarkable art collections in the Library, including a collection of prints, and of a Picture Collection of visual images; the programme of art exhibitions he organised in the Library led to the founding of the Newark Museum. The collections Dana initiated continued to grow after his death, guided by his inspiration: they are of regional and even national importance and, via library networking, serve the whole state of New Jersey; the scope of the print collection has been extended to include several categories of printed ephemera, including shopping bags.

Abstract (sommario):
This article examines the activities of the Newark Public Library during World War I as a means of highlighting the significant role American libraries played in promoting the nation’s war effort. During the war public libraries were usually the most important information centers in their communities. They distributed books, pamphlets, and posters in support of a wide range of government initiatives, they organized war-related exhibits and classes, and they collected vast amounts of reading material for libraries at military camps. Newark’s chief librarians, John Cotton Dana and Beatrice Winser, oversaw many such patriotic initiatives, but they also became involved in more controversial campaigns to employ women librarians at military camps and to resist wartime calls for censorship of unpatriotic literature.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose: The paper discusses the significance and effects of the location of a public library on its use and on the environment in which it operates. The research was conducted as a case study of Pobrežje Library, a branch of Maribor Public Library, after relocation to a shopping centre. Methodology/approach: To assess the impact on library use after relocation, we analysed statistical data from the Cobiss3/Izpisi segment of library automation system. Through a content analysis of semi-structured interviews with the head of Pobrežje Library and with representatives of seven business entities in the shopping centre, we obtained the opinion on perception and acceptance of the library among the users, as well as opinions on the influence the library might have on the turnover of other businesses in the shopping centre. Results: The results of the research show a significant increase of new memberships and usage of the Pobrežje Library at its new location. The increase was also significant after comparing the data to other similar branches of the Maribor Public Library. According to the head librarian of Pobrežje Library, the users’ perceptions regarding the location of the library in the shopping centre are generally positive, though certain concerns are also noted. The majority of interviewed representatives of business entities in the shopping centre believe that the library has some positive business impact and they see the possible future benefits of the library as a business neighbour. Research limitation: A short research period (only eleven months) after the relocation of Pobrežje Library (from October 2022 to August 2023). The pre-relocation period was influenced by COVID-19 measures, which affected library use and commercial businesses. Originality/practical implications: The results of this case study may be valuable for strategic placement planning, when considering shopping centres as locations for public library branches.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to suggest that today’s libraries function using business practices in its management of the library to ensure that its service-based mission is respected. Design/methodology/approach Literature review and commentary on this topic that has been addressed by professionals, researchers and practitioners. Findings Libraries have learned from business the importance of using not only the business practice of using a vigorous level of data-driven decision-making, but data-driven reporting as well to a public that expects a higher level of scrutiny, clarity and precision. Paired with evidence from those who have benefitted from the library’s programs and services most visibly, this combination of data and human-driven anecdotes can serve as the optimum marriage of business and service-based confirmation of library success. Originality/value The value in exploring this topic is to make the distinction between libraries whose supporters expect it to be formally managed like a business as opposed to those who suggest that business practices be used in library operations to ensure its mission as a service-based entity is maintained.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose This research study aims to examine influences on the public library funding decision from the perspectives of New Jersey mayors and public library directors. Design/methodology/approach Content analysis was used to explore statements of 84 public library directors and 45 mayors about what was most/least effective in a recent library budget request. Findings Although they may differ on the relative importance of a specific concept, the public library directors and mayors in this study have high levels of agreement about what information is important in the budget decision process. Research limitations/implications The primary limitations of the findings of this study stem from the reliability of self-reported data and the low response rates. While the researcher believes that the findings and conclusions are valid for the survey respondents, it is less certain that they are valid for all public libraries in New Jersey, and it is not recommended that the conclusions be extended to public libraries outside of the state which differ in state mandates and other circumstances. Practical implications Understanding more about the factors that can influence library funding decisions provides insight into the very complex public library funding process and may help public library directors and mayors engage in mutually satisfactory budget negotiations. Originality/value This study contributes to the Library and Information Science research literature on library budgets by examining influences on the public library funding decision, specifically adding the perspectives of mayors and public library directors on a recent budget cycle.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to study how Swedish local politicians perceive the impact of public library digital services on public libraries and to discuss how this can affect the sustainable development of public libraries. Design/methodology/approach – Empirical data were collected through semi-structured interviews with local politicians from 19 different Swedish municipalities. Data were treated to qualitative content analysis and discussed based on the concept of sustainable organization. Findings – According to local politicians, public library digital services may affect public libraries through changes to libraries’ physical spaces, librarians’ tasks and competencies and libraries’ economic situations. Based on these findings, public library digital services can both strengthen and weaken public library sustainability through, for example, increased access and expenditures, the latter of which may threaten public library sustainability. Research limitations/implications – Interviews did not focus specifically on the politicians’ views on public library digital services but dealt generally with their views on public libraries. To identify reasons for variations in views on this topic, follow-up interviews should be done. Data on views from public library managers would also be of use to determine the degree to which they are shared with local politicians. Originality/value – When sustainability and public libraries are discussed, the focus is generally on the library’s contribution to a sustainable society. Here, the focus is instead on the sustainability of the public library itself.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: This essay considers how specific instances of censorship and self-censorship may have influenced Roth's choice of a "missing chapter" as a powerful ending for Operation Shylock: A Confession (1993). By drawing from recently disclosed archive material at the Philip Roth Personal Library, I provide evidence of the author responding to the contemporary debate over free speech and reconstruct how his references to recent occurrences of textual suppression shaped his "unfinished" novel. I focus primarily on three sources that Roth read for research during the composition of Operation Shylock : The Sanctity of Speech (1986) by Yisroel Kolman Krohn and Yisroel Meir Shain, On Clowns (1992) by Norman Manea, and "Truth Whereby Nations Live" (1988) by Peretz Kidron—all in Roth's Personal Library at the Newark Public Library. A comparison with selected passages from these and other nonfictional texts reveals Roth's career-long interest in how different forms of political, social, and textual repression have been working in the context of Jewish writing and across Jewish institutions, in the US and abroad. It also underscores that the novel—far from being merely self-referential—was meant to represent censorship as accurately as in the historical examples one could easily find outside the book, in the political events of the late twentieth century.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not a dedicated business center within a public library acts as a key success factor in a public library’s services to the community entrepreneur. Design/methodology/approach – A questionnaire survey was sent to 88 public libraries with dedicated business centers, and posted to BRASS-L and BUSLIB-L, for input from public libraries without business centers. Interviews with three survey respondents and one local city official followed. Findings – Fifty-seven per cent of all respondents felt that a dedicated business center is very essential or essential to the services provided to the entrepreneurial community. The services most often offered were workshops/seminars/classes, counseling sessions by collaborative agencies and one-on-one research sessions with librarians. The majority of responding libraries collaborated with a community business agency (80 per cent). Fifty-one per cent spend between 6 and 20 hours/month on the collaboration. Research limitations/implications – Since 2007, many of the dedicated business centers in public libraries have closed or been consolidated with other sections and services of a public library. This should be further studied. Further research on librarian expertise in market and industry research is recommended. Originality/value – This study updates the business services associated with public libraries business services since the push in the late 1990s for public libraries to be more active in community economic development.

Abstract (sommario):
In 1996, its centenary year, the New York Public Library opened its Science, Industry and Business Library (SIBL) in a former department store in mid-town Manhattan, occupying 160,000 square feet of usable floor space. The building, which has received six awards, is designed to be both attractive and highly functional. The $100 million project was funded by a combination of private and government funds. The concept is of a specialized high technology research centre with unparallelled older and current print collections (1.2 million books and serials) and access to electronic resources, which also incorporates a 50,000-item circulating library of popular print, audiovisual and multimedia materials. All of the resources are available to the public at no charge. Much of the collection is on open access. There are several professionally staffed information service points. The provision of extensive training sessions is proving to be an outstanding success, more than 20,000 people having registered since SIBL opened. A three-year grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation has enabled SIBL to train information professionals in the three crucial areas of technological competence, customer service and professional development.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between different aspects of public library use with elements of economic growth and development. Design/methodology/approach – Statistical correlations were performed to uncover statistically significant relationships. Findings – Relationships are not uniform: strongly positive relationships exist between education and visits, circulation and library programmes, savings and visits and circulation and programmes, and a strongly negative relationship exists between health and circulation. Research limitations/implications – Only one proxy variable for each of the economic development indicators was used, including the fact that others might have revealed other information. Social implications – The revealed relationships should be kept in mind by librarians and policymakers as decisions to change library services that might trickle down to citizens through economic growth and development. Originality/value – This paper brings together a variety of economic growth and development factors and several aspects of public library use in a single framework.

The impact of ministerial grants and EU fundson the library of a non-public higher education institution as seen in the Library of the WSB University of ToruńThe article presents an outline of the legal basis of the operation of non-public higher education institutions and their place in the Polish education system. This is the background for the author’s analysis of the library and information systems of business schools that are part of the TEB SA group. The author focuses on extrabudgetary forms of expanding the library of anon-public university through the use of ministerial and EU grants. The case study presented in the article is that of the Library of the WSB University of Toruń. The author examines, on the basis of books inventoried in 2011–2016, the volume and percentage share of books acquired thanks to EU funds and ministerial grants. She demonstrates how the Library — which, owing to the business nature of the University, has specialist collections at its disposal — acquires new forms of books e-books in mobi and pdf files, e-book readers, audiobooks etc. as well as educational aids. She presents examples of how extrabudgetary funds can support and complement the main budget of the library of anon-public university in its initiatives aimed at creating amodern facility.

Abstract (sommario):
Singapore has been taking various steps to develop its information resources since the publication of the Library 2000 report in 1994, which was preceded by the IT2000 plan in 1991. Libraries have been officially recognized as an integral part of the country's information infrastructure. A National Library Board was set up in 1996, to develop national and public library services and to spearhead collaboration with other government agencies in promoting access to information. A clearer distinction is being made between National Library services and public library services, both of which have been provided by the National Library. A National Reference and Information Service will include a National Reference Library, a Singapore Resource Library, and a Multimedia Information Centre. The public library system will be restructured to include five regional libraries, to serve the educational, informational, recreational and business needs of each region; 18 community libraries, catering primarily for the residents of Housing Development Board towns; and around 100 neighbourhood libraries, situated in HDB flats and currently aimed at children below the age of ten. Efforts are being made to coordinate national collection strategy, to orient services to markets and to create links with business and the community. The recognition of technology as a key enabler has led to several major initiatives. It is also recognized that technologically adept and information-oriented librarians are needed, and educational programmes to produce them are being developed, as well as short term recruitment and training activities. Research in library and information science is also encouraged. The Library 2000 initiative is part of a wider picture of fostering the cultural and intellectual capital of Singapore.

Abstract (sommario):
Given the changes in the environment, customer demands, and alternative media portals, public libraries are starting to rethink their business models. The purpose of this study is to investigate how business models for public libraries can look in the future. Using pragmatic constructivism as a paradigm, this paper investigates the research question through a case study of the Urban Media space Aarhus (Aarhus Library) with additional comparable data from Aarhus State Library. The empirical data has been collected through interviews with the administrative director of the citizen service center and libraries and with the area director from Aarhus State Library. According to the six types of business models by Henry Chesbrough, Aarhus Library lies between type 5 and 6, which is a company with a quit open business model that has close connections to both partnerships and customers. The study of these libraries implies that different elements need to be taken into account when defining a business model for public libraries. These elements are customer integration, innovation, and broad collaboration in order to satisfy the diverse customers’ demands. We suggest that future libraries have to be well adapted to changes and be quick at picking up new ideas both from customers and partners and other actors in society in order to cope with the ever changing environment.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to discuss library transformation and creative approaches in public services.Design/methodology/approachUsing classic business concept and drawing on Cornell University service examples, changing customer demands and library's ability to innovate and respond to customers are assessed. The critical skills needed for library to remain competitive are outlined.FindingsIn order for libraries to remain relevant to their customers, they must follow the fundamental rule of business, that is, to supply what is demanded by their market. Library staff skills and library services all have to shift from book‐centric to user‐centric.Practical implicationsAs the academic library continues to redefine its role in teaching and research in the digital environment, it needs to leverage its strengths, such as physical space and collections, and to innovate responsive and convenient services.Originality/valueThe ideas presented in this paper are most useful to library managers and leaders as they address service weak points or the design and development of user‐centric, value‐added library services.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – The purpose of this paper was to identify essential resources that entrepreneurs need; to determine which resources and services are available at public libraries in two Florida counties; and to suggest additional ways for public libraries to increase their value and visibility among the business community. Design/methodology/approach – Information was gathered using structured and open-ended questions, using the Qualtrics survey technology provider, to obtain both quantitative and qualitative responses. Library administrators were contacted to identify relevant library staff to participate in the survey. Pasco County Library System administrators agreed to distribute the survey to their staff. Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative administrators provided email addresses of staff selected to participate. Web sites of the libraries, their counties, and their partners were also examined for additional information. Findings – The results suggest that the libraries are able to satisfy most of the requests of entrepreneurs. One exception was consulting, which was not consistently available, according to respondents, but could be offered at the library by business service organizations. Suggestions for promoting library business resources were proposed, based on survey responses and the websites of the libraries, their counties, and their business service organization partners. Research limitations/implications – This research studied key public librarians and staff employed at Pasco and Hillsborough counties in Florida. Some of the resources identified as useful for entrepreneurs in these counties may not be generalizable to communities outside the state of Florida, or outside the USA. Additionally, the survey did not explore what is not being done or what could be done if the libraries had more resources. Practical implications – This study provides information on the resources and services that public libraries provide entrepreneurs. It also offers suggestions for libraries to become more valuable and visible to their local business community. Social implications – As entrepreneurs and small businesses contribute substantially to economic development, public libraries that provide assistance to them help their communities prosper. Originality/value – This study is a collaboration between an academic reference librarian with a recent MBA degree, and an Entrepreneur Services Manager and Florida SBDC Center Director, who together provide a unique perspective and interpretive value toward promoting economic development.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to use Song’s 2004 survey to assess this institution’s international business students’ perceptions and expectations of library services to improve the quality of services provided. Design/methodology/approach The authors of this study deployed Song’s 2004 survey, with his permission, to 775 international undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the Fall 2016 semester using the online survey tool Qualtrics. Findings The current study compared Song’s 2004 survey results (n = 143) with the researchers’ results (n = 149). The response rate of the current survey deployment was 19.2%. This research focused on the comparison of this institution’s Chinese business students’ (n = 71) perceptions of library use and services in 2016 with Song’s Chinese students’ perceptions (n = 24) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne (UIUC) in 2004. The researchers asked the international business students (UG and GR) to rate their perceived importance of five topics of library services: personal study area, public computers, electronic resources, group meeting space and virtual reference. Overall students (n = 149) rated personal study area as being the most important library service (4.34; moderately important) and virtual reference as being the least important library service (3.33; neutral). Originality/value Overall the library literature is limited with respect to studies that compare the perceptions and expectations of library services of international students from China, who are studying business at universities or colleges in the USA.
