As a Chinese American born in Peking and educated both in China and in the United States, the author has, for several decades, been interested in the impact of Chinese culture, including medicine, on American society. While holding a professorship in physiology and biophysics at the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center, the author began to teach a course on Chinese medical history in the early 1960s. In 1972, he founded the Institute for Advanced Research in Asian Science and Medicine (IARASM) which publishes the American Journal of Chinese Medicine, holds international conferences for scholars and physicians interested in indigenous medical systems, trains physicians for acupuncture therapy, and fosters centers for urban primary health care. The author is a member of the World Health Organization's Expert Advisory Panel on Traditional Medicine. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Chinese Medicine which now reaches an audience in 45 countries. The IARASM is a World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine. The author served on the Rockefeller Commission of New York State on Acupuncture in 1973, and, in the same year, served as a panel member of the National Institutes of Health Conference on Acupuncture. He visited China at the invitation of the Ministry of Public Health of the People's Republic of China or WHO in 1973, 1974, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1984, and 1987 when he chaired meetings and lectured to faculty of several medical schools. The author envisages that the process of integration of all indigenous medicines of various cultures will end in the 21st century, at which time the "ecumenical medicine" - a term first used by Joseph Needham - movement will not be necessary, for all forms of medicine will be one system. The author has a great interest in the furtherance of indigenous medicine and their integration into one system, but his views and observations, as all endeavors in humanity, are not infallible.

Professor Om Gurung is a senior anthropologist, an influencing intellectual, and a prominent public leader in Nepal. He served Tribhuvan University as a professor of anthropology for 36 years and headed the Central Department of Sociology/Anthropology for 13 years. Professor Gurung did his M. A. in History from Tribhuvan University in 1975, M. A. in anthropology from the University of Poona in 1980, and Ph. D. in Anthropology from Cornell University of Ithaca, New York in 1996. He is one of the founding members of the Central Department of Sociology/Anthropology at Tribhuvan University of Nepal. He has served as a visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Liverpool John Moores University in the UK, Lille University in France, and the University of Sichuan in China. He is a visiting research fellow at the University of Bergen, Norway, and a guest lecturer at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, Oxford University, UK, China Institute of New School University, New York, the University of Mons, Belgium, the University of Heidelberg, Germany and Chinese University in Hong Kong. Professor Gurung was heavily engaged in various social, professional, and political organizations. He has made substantial scholarly and social contributions to the understanding of social and political issues of Nepal. As a promising intellectual leader of ethnic rights and politics of social inclusion in Nepal, he raised socio-political awareness among indigenous peoples of Nepal and mobilized them to assert their ethnic identity and cultural rights. He has a deep commitment to the development of anthropology and Nepali people.

Activated B cell-like diffuse large B cell lymphoma (ABC-DLBCL) is a common aggressive diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Even though CD20 antibody (Rituximab) combination therapy improved the total prognosis of DLBCL, there are still many relapsed and refractory ABC-DLBCL cases. The new treatment options are urgently needed. Pathogenesis of ABC-DLBCL is different from germinal center B cell-like diffuse large B cell lymphoma (GCB-DLBCL), which is related to activation of B cell antigen receptor(BCR) signaling. The Bruton tyrosine kinase(BTK) plays a central role in BCR signaling. Inhibition of BTK function will affect BCR signaling activity, which is involved in maintaining the malignant phenotype in B-cell lymphoma. Now in clinic, BTK inhibitors like Ibrutinib or Acalabrutinib are used extensively in chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma(CLL/SLL), mantle cell lymphoma(MCL) as first line therapy or second line therapy. But in DLBCL its role is unclear now.Some DLBCL clinic trials got the better PFS and OS in BTK inhibitor combination therapy group(combined with Rituximab or RCHOP) but some got the negative results. Whether BTK inhibitors can definitely improve ABC-DLBCL survival and the mechanism how BTK inhibitors inducing cell death are needed further investigations. CYLD (cylindromatosis) is a tumor suppressor, its activity is inhibited by phosphorylation, which is related to apoptosis regulation pathway NF-kB in many kinds of tumors.In this study, we found that CYLD to be constitutively phosphorylated in ABC-DLBCL cell line models (HBL-1 and OCI-Ly10) as well as primary samples from patients with non-GCB DLBCL. We subsequently examined the effect of BTK inhibitors Ibrutinib (PCI-32765) and Acalabrutinib (ACP-196) on CYLD phosphorylation. We found that BTK inhibitors Ibrutinib and Acalabrutinib both induced ABC-DLBCL apoptosis by down-regulating CYLD phosphorylation in vivo and in vitro, even in the Rituximab resistant ABC-DLBCL cell line.Combination of BTK inhibitors and Rituximab would enhance this effect. Knockdown of CYLD in ABC-DLBCL cells reduced the level of cell death induced by BTK inhibitors, which showed that this cell death induced by BTK inhibitors was CYLD dependent. Through this study, we conclude that BTK inhibitors induce CYLD inactivation by regulating CYLD phosphorylation is clinical beneficial in ABC-DLBCL therapy, especially the relapsed or refractory ABC-DLBCL cases after Rituximab therapy. Objective. To compare the postoperative complications of open, laparoscopic and retroperitoneoscopic nephrectomies. Materials and methods. The study was conducted on 803 patients who underwent open, laparoscopic and retroperitoneoscopic nephrectomy on the basis of 3 clinics of the Medical Institute of the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia and in Republican scientific-clinical center «Urology»; Dushanbe, Tajikistan in the period from 2008 to, 2022. Postoperative complications were recorded and classified according to the Clavien-Dindo Classification (CDC). All analyses were performed on SPSS version 21.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, USA). Results. In the examined groups, no statistically significant differences were found between the operated patients by age, weight, height, body mass index (BMI) and concomitant diseases. Based on the analysis of the table, it can be concluded that the most significant differences were found for the indicator of intestinal damage in the LN group in relation to the PH and TN groups (2.23% and 1.98 %; p = 0.0345 and p = 0.0127); the indicator «Intestinal paresis» in the LN and TN groups in relation to the PH group (3.43% and 7.9%; p = 0.0422 and p = 0.0077); pneumothorax index in the TN group compared to the LN and PH groups (2.08% and 2.45%; p = 0.0123 and p = 0.0177); wound suppuration index in the PH and TN groups relative to the LN group (6.02%) and 10.60%); p < 0.0001 and p < 0.0001); total the rate of complications in the TN group significantly differed in relation to the LN and PH groups (p = 0.0060). Conclusion. In this study, patients after open surgery had a higher percentage of complications, which is associated not only with traumatic access, but also the predominance in this group of patients with purulentinflammatory complications, as well as a large number of operations in the anamnesis.

The goal of the project is to design a non-sectarian meditation center in the dense urban area of New York City. The design challenge is to draw inspiration from an interpretation of ancient philosophies of meditation, without simply importing cultural relics from places in which those philosophies have flourished in the past. More difficult was the decision to apply meditation philosophy not just to the design, but to the process of designing. The functional purpose of the building is somewhat flexible. People who practice meditation mayor may not be involved with an organized religion. The current "Dharma scene" in America is extremely diverse. The purpose of the Center is to facilitate the exploration of the mind and reality that goes on in meditation. It might serve as a meeting place for various groups, and also as a center for the study and debate. Practitioners of different schools might meet to compare notes, or to attend conferences such as the Mind Science seminars held on a semi-annual basis by the Dalai Lama and researchers in the cognitive sciences.

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the role and influence imagination plays on a building for the arts. The American Film Institute is considered to be a building for the production and study as well as the presentation of film. Because imagination is the most important tool the film maker possesses and is that which the general audience becomes a part of, this thesis strives to produce a building which enhances this tool.
Steel and glass have been chosen as two of the three primary materials in the film institute for their reflective properties as well as their specific properties to distort reflections. Concrete was chosen as the third primary material not only for its compressive strength, but for its many possible finishes and its compatibility (being non-reflective) with the other two primary materials.
The institute will be created in such a way that even in their permanence they will provide for a changing space which will make for a re-occurring newness each time it is visited, thus sparking the imagination.
To the user of the institute, the space will each time be new. It takes on this characteristic as its users encounter their own reflection as well as the reflections - sometimes distorted - of others. This is enhanced as movement occurs not always in a straight line nor only at one level. Shade and shadow from stationary light, as further enhance the imagination.

On April 21, 2001, the United States and China faced their first major incident of the 21st century when a U.S. spy plane accidentally collided with a Chinese fighter plane. The dialogue that followed between the two countries, as well as the tenor of the incident as reported in the international press, provide some interesting and insightful glimpses into how these major powers handled the incident in the days and weeks that followed. Although the mainstream media in both China and the United States reported the key facts and elements of the incident in a similar fashion, the spin that was ultimately placed on the event by the Chinese press was clearly indicative of the Asian state's desire to portray the United States as being at fault; however, because both countries have an enormous stake in ensuring continued friendly relations for trade purposes, the Chinese press eventually adopted an official position that would allow the United States to "save face" while ensuring that the killed Chinese pilot involved was lauded as a fearless hero of the state and a martyr to its cause. To determine how these events played out in the respective mainstream media of China and the United States, as well as the international media, this research provides a review of the relevant literature to identify how the spy plane collision was portrayed, what elements are regarded as important for analysis. This study compares the two accounts from China and the U.S., and to a lesser extent, the international media, by grouping the media accounts into three separate dimensions: 1) visual framing, 2) contextual framing and 3) operational framing, to determine how these factors played out in the spy plane incident. The analysis of the media accounts is followed by a summary of the research in the concluding paragraph.M.A.

Using Kinder zhurnal, an American Yiddish children's literary magazine, as the focus for this thesis, the intimate relationships between the Yiddish cultural movement which began in East Europe and the Yiddish secular school movement in America are explored. As a product of and for the Sholom Aleichem Folk Institute, a now defunct educational organization, Kinder zhurnal demonstrated the key philosophical tenets of the Yiddishist education movement as it evolved.In an analysis of the Yiddishist philosophy of education parallels are drawn between modern Yiddish secular education and that of John Dewey in their humanistic emphasis and underlying pragmatism. Utilizing the parameters of the Yiddishist/Deweyian theory, an assessment to determine the practical viability of the Yiddishist concepts is made. Kinder zhurnal, as representative of Yiddishist philosophy and educational methodology, provides the microcosmic source for much of this discussion. Its close affiliation with the unique educational philosophy of the Sholom Aleichem Folk Institute provides the opportunity to examine the educational implications of teaching Yiddish as part of Jewish education.

While much has been written on the Australian film and television
industry, little has been presented by actual producers,
filmmakers and technicians of their time and experiences within
that same industry. Similarly, with historical documentaries, it
has been academics rather than filmmakers who have led the
debate. This thesis addresses this shortcoming and bridges the
gap between practitioner experience and intellectual discussion,
synthesising the debate and providing an important contribution
from a filmmaker-academic, in its own way unique and insightful.
The thesis is presented in two voices. First, my voice, the
voice of memoir and recollected experience of my screen
adventures over 38 years within the Australian industry, mainly
producing historical documentaries for the ABC and the SBS. This
is represented in italics. The second half and the alternate
chapters provide the industry framework in which I worked with
particular emphasis on documentaries and how this evolved and
developed over a 40-year period, from 1970 to 2010.
Within these two voices are three layers against which this
history is reviewed and presented. Forming the base of the
pyramid is the broad Australian film industry made up of feature
films, documentary, television drama, animation and other types
and styles of production. Above this is the genre documentary
within this broad industry, and making up the small top tip of
the pyramid, the sub-genre of historical documentary. These form
the vertical structure within which industry issues are
discussed. Threading through it are the duel determinants of
production: ‘the market’ and ‘funding’.
Underpinning the industry is the involvement of government, both
state and federal, forming the three dimensional matrix for the
thesis. For over 100 years the Australian film industry has
depended on government support through subsidy, funding
mechanisms, development assistance, broadcast policy and
legislative provisions.
This thesis aims to weave together these industry layers, binding
them with the determinants of the market and funding, and
immersing them beneath layers of government legislation and
policy to present a new view of the Australian film industry.

AbstractFar-right grassroot organizations were early adopters of the internet and social media and have been using it to spread their ideologies, mobilize people and network since the 1990s. With the increased usage of social media, their communication style has naturally changed. Due to the interactive nature of social media, the far-right groups started to communicate in a savvy style based on meme and DIY aesthetics. This style allows these groups to blurry the line between serious and irony (Shifman, L., Memes in Digital Culture. Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 2014) but also between facts and misinformation (Klein, O., The Open Journal of Sociopolitical Studies 154–179, 2020). There is a burgeoning body of literature investigating the way and for what purposes such organizations use the internet in which the researchers look particularly on memes (Klein, O., The Open Journal of Sociopolitical Studies 154–179, 2020) but also humour (Billig, M., Comic racism and violence. In S. Lockyer, & M. Pickering (Eds.), Beyond a joke. The limits of humor (pp. 25–44). New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2005a; Billig, M., Laughter and ridicule. Towards a social critique of humor. London: SAGE Publications, 2005b). However, not many studies explored the link between humour and morality. The aim of this exploratory study, in which humour is viewed as a means of claims making and negotiation of political views, is to deepen the knowledge of how humour in memes produced and reproduced by far-right organizations can serve as a tool for constructing a moral order. To do so, I analysed memes used on the far-right Facebook page run by Czech organization Angry Mothers which engage in anti-Islam and anti-gender activism. Based on Michael Billig’s (2005) distinction between rebellious and disciplinary humour, I argue that the organization used rebellious humour to present themselves as an alternative to mainstream media and resistance to the alleged dictatorship of liberal elites and disciplinary humour to put minorities (both sexual and ethnic) “in their place”.

Despite its more than 100 pages of appendices on logistic regression and other technical, statistical issues, The Bell Curve: Intelligence and Class Structure in American Life became an instantaneous cause célèbre, providing its junior author, Charles Murray—Professor Richard J. Herrnstein having passed away only days before publication—with considerably more than his Warholian 15 minutes of fame and leading a reporter for the New York Times Magazine to designate him “the most dangerous” conservative in the country. Among the many “serious” periodicals to discuss the book at length, The New Republic devoted almost an entire issue to an essay by its authors along with a host of responses, and for some weeks Murray was a ubiquitous presence on television talk shows.

Abstract The Neurological Institute of New York was founded in 1909. Historical accounts laud it as the first hospital in the United States devoted to patients with neurological diseases.2,3 But that was only partly true. Neurologists in those days were called “neuropsychiatrists,” necessarily so. The specialty had originated during the Civil War, not even 50 years earlier. Neurological diseases were impervious to available treatments, and it is now difficult to think of a single condition other than epilepsy that could have been treated effectively with a drug or surgery. Another push for the hybrid term came from patients, who felt stigmatized by a psychiatric diagnosis and preferred to be admitted to a neurological hospital rather than an psychiatric hospital. Besides, psychiatrists were mostly in charge of asylums hidden in distant sites, remote from big cities. From the beginning and continuing for more than 50 years, many—perhaps even most—patients admitted to the institute probably had psychiatric disorders. Since the 1950s, however, advances in neuroscience have totally transformed the specialty, moving treatment to center stage for many conditions, even though giant public health challenges remain to this day; Alzheimer disease claims more than 4 million people now, and Parkinson disease is closing in on another million.

A heavy-duty industrial gas turbine combustion system has been designed and laboratory tested for use with low heating value coal gas produced by an air-blown Lurgi coal gasifier. The design fuel has a nominal lower heating value of 4.21 MJ/ncm (107 Btu/scf). The combustor design utilizes high-swirl fuel and air injection to provide rapid fuel/air mixing and a stable flame front, and is physically interchangeable with the conventional fuel combustion system for the General Electric model MS5001 gas turbine. Full-pressure, full-scale tests of the new combustion system have been conducted at the General Electric Gas Turbine Development Laboratory in Schenectady, New York, USA, for the Shanghai Power Plant Equipment Research Institute (SPPERI) of the Peoples Republic of China. Simulated clean low heating value coal gas fuel with a composition specified by SPPERI was used for these tests. Laboratory test results are presented for important combustor operating parameters, including exhaust emissions, combustion efficiency, exhaust temperature profile, dynamic pressure, and metal temperature distribution.

As a definition; poverty is a situation that people’s basic needs are not being met to sustain their life which is many countries facing today. In recent years, fighting against poverty has become one of the most important issues in the world. One of the steps taken by the United Nations to fight against poverty is Millennium Development Goals. In 2000, a millennium development meeting took place with many countries’ participation in New York. During the meeting, many goals were set such as eliminating poverty and famine, decreasing child death, providing primary education for all and dealing with epidemic diseases. In this study, progress level of The Millennium Development Goals, the steps which have taken and their effects were examined in Turkey. Data was collected from UNDP and TSI (Turkish Statistical Institute). The millennium development goals globally have been reached at a certain level between 1990 and 2015. Today, primary school accessibility level is around 90% in developing countries. Even though poverty was reduced by half, there are still 1,2 billion people who live in extreme poverty. In Turkey, there have been promising developments towards Millennium Development Goals. While level of people who live under extreme poverty line (1$ per day) was 0,2% in 2002, this rate was decreased to 0% by 2006. The poverty rate (below 4,3 $ per capita per day) in 2014 was 1,62%, and primary school enrollment rate was 99%. In addition to this, mother and children death rate was largely decreased.

Weeksville was founded in 1838 by formerly enslaved persons and freedmen who sought to create a self-sustaining utopian community in Brooklyn, New York. Distinguished by its urbanity, size, and relative physical and economic stability, the community provided sanctuary for self-emancipated persons from Southern slave plantations, and for free Black people escaping the violence of New York City’s Draft Riots in 1863. The second largest African American community in the U.S. was absorbed by the forces of real estate development in New York City. After almost fifty years of community led persistence and vision, in 2014 the Weeksville Heritage Center (WHC) introduced a new Cultural Arts Building and interpretive landscape on the same campus as the original community. “Connecting to the Archive: Counter-Gentrification Tactics in Central Brooklyn,” strengthens community development activities as a counterforce to gentrification through several processes that center around the ongoing development of archival and oral history collections held by the Center. Through academic partnership with Pratt Institute in the Pratt Weeksville Archive students and faculty work together with the Center’s staff and community members on the ongoing archiving project, which seeks to support the Center’s efforts to preserve and add to the archive, provide access to, and interpret the archival microhistory of community development and documentation activities that led to the formation of the Society and its growth. Historic Black nineteenth century self-supporting communities can become a model for empowerment in twenty first century shrinking Black communities rendered apolitical and ahistorical and little hope for a future. Central Brooklyn is arguably the largest African American community in the U.S., with a population that is shrinking in numbers due to white gentrification and beset by the traumas caused by anti-Black racism, generational displacement and poor access to public services. To assist in this effort, the project engages with local residents in oral history and critical ethnography practices so as to decentered the privileged position of the ethnographer. Based on the multidimensional method of Edgar Morin and everyday life practitioners, the goal is to empower residents to utilize the archive through interviewing, self-documentation, storytelling, and appreciation of archival and oral history methodologies. The project connects the Center to its immediate community and the immediate community to the Center through the effort to document the memory and experience of the neighborhood in the past, present, and future, to engage with and expand the archival collections held at the Center so as to create a place of refuge, delight and individual and collective history as a counterforce to the forces of global neoliberalism that continue to degrade, marginalize and challenge BIPOC community building.

Because of exportation and importation of countries, the amount of commerce enlarged, therefore foreign agreements increased. Because of having differnet law systems of the contries the people, working on permanent investment and commerce wishes to have the suitable arbitration that they want.From this point of view, begining from the year 1898, It has been worked on to develop contraptions do international authorized commercial court’s duty. Then permanent arbitration council was established, Cenevre Convention, New York Convention was established, and the rules of international arbitration called UNCITRAL was constituted. The countries which are the contracting parties of these agreements, agreed that the implement of rules on their own domestic law systems. In addition, they delegated compulsory execution for these rules. Beside this, to organise the international commercial arbitration, countries and private institues are founded arbitration institues. Today there are hundereds of international commercial arbitration institues, which are called as the same name of their city’s, the most favorite and their woking systems are explaned.

<p>Physical security challenges from explosions are amplified in confined spaces. The air-blast shock waves reflect and propagate throughout the confined space. This paper describes the process of designing, constructing, and validating a wireless system for identification of explosions in real time. Protection of critical infrastructure requires the creation of a reliable system which provides quick and accurate identification of the hazards and subsequent transmission of the alarm signal to response and rescue services. The proposed wireless system consists of transmitter and receiver modules spaced throughout the tunnel. The transmitter module contains sensors and a microprocessor equipped with blast identification software. The receiver module produces an alarm signal and activation signal for the operation of protecting devices. The experimental validation has been carried out at the underground experimental base of G. Tsulukidze Mining Institute, Tbilisi, Georgia. The results of the testing validated the main characteristics of the system, notably:</p><p>No false signals were generated during the series of 20 experiments</p><p>After a blast event, the duration for analyzing the potential threat is 2.4 msec and the duration for activating the protection device is 11 msec</p><p>The reliable transmission distance is 150 m (492 ft) in a straight tunnel and 50 m (164 ft) in a tunnel with a 90° bend.</p>

<p>Advancements put forth by the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) of ASCE are paving the way for a regulated engineered alternative to the long‐standing archaic requirements for structural fire design. For the past century, project stakeholders have tolerated a strikingly inefficient and amorphous system for protecting structures from uncontrolled fire. Traditionally, fire protection is prescribed for structures after they have been optimized for ambient design loads (i.e., gravity, wind, seismic, and others), with no explicit consideration of structural fire performance. Accordingly, the vulnerability of buildings to structural failure from uncontrolled fire is presumably variable across different jurisdictions, which have varying structural design requirements for ambient loads. Also, structural engineers are often absent from the structural fire protection design process entirely.</p><p>In conjunction with new provisions in Appendix E of Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criterial for Buildings and Other Structures (ASCE/SEI 7‐16), a first‐of‐its‐kind ASCE/SEI Manual of Practice 138: Structural Fire Engineering, has been developed to provide structural engineers a baseline level of guidance to practice structural fire engineering. Also, ASCE/SEI has partnered with the Charles Pankow Foundation to conduct an ambitious project meant to showcase this new technology to the industry. Advancing the adoption of performance‐based structural fire engineering within the AEC industry will benefit public safety while delivering more efficient and economic building designs.</p>

<p>The historic building "Du Pont" in Zurich, Switzerland, was constructed between 1912 and 1913 by the Swiss architects Haller & Schindler and it is listed as a cultural heritage object, including not only the Art Deco façade, but also the ground-breaking structure of reinforced concrete. The building includes several structural particularities, such as the slender, reinforced concrete, one-way ribbed slabs, a reinforced concrete truss structure in the roof hanging four floors and three transfer beams on the ground floor diverting the loads from the seven upper floors. This paper presents a detailed description of the different strengthening measures required to allow a more flexible use of the existing floors with larger live and dead loads, and to fulfil the current provisions of the Swiss Standards (SIA). The main objective of the proposed restoration and strengthening measures is to minimize the interventions as much as possible and preserve the original structural system. Of particular interest is the innovative solution adopted for the existing ribbed slabs. The required increase of resistance is obtained through a thin 40 mm overlay of Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) above the carefully prepared existing slab. Due to the significance of the building and the particular characteristics of the existing concrete, experimental tests were conducted. Four specimens of the ribbed slabs were extracted from the building, strengthened on site with UHPFRC and transported to the structural laboratory of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETHZ), where the tests were conducted. The excellent results confirmed the suitability of the proposed strengthening solution through UHPFRC, setting a milestone for future restorations of these particular structures.</p>

<p>Nowadays large box-girder concrete bridges are either built using pre-cast segmental erection or in-situ casting of concrete. Using these methods sets limitations when it comes to construction speed or to segment length due to the weight of full-cast concrete segments. To close the gap between the two construction approaches, the Institute of Structural Engineering of the TU Wien has developed new technologies for bridge construction using thin-walled pre-fabricated elements originally used in building construction. Based on these developments, an innovative construction method has been proposed, which consists of the following steps:</p> <ul> <li>Highly automated production of thin-walled concrete elements in a pre-casting-plant</li> <li>On-site production of box-girder segments using thin-walled elements</li> <li>Connection of the segments with post-tensioning tendons to form a bridge girder</li> <li>Installation of the girder to its final position using any construction method as for example incremental launching or the balanced lift method</li> <li>Pumping of in-situ concrete, to complete the girder in the final position</li> </ul> <p>The presented research shows, that this approach is advantageous for construction methods, with large differences in bending moment distribution during the construction stages and the final state. The required amount of materials cannot only be reduced, but the construction process can be accelerated as well, therefore improving the efficiency in bridge construction. Results of tests on large-scale specimens, which will be described in detail, show the potential of the new method.</p>

This paper examines how the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies (IAUS) that existed in New York City between 1967-1984, constructed a space that reinstated a Western epistemology for architecture and created an audience and discourse for an emerging architecture scene in a distressed New York through its events and media during the 1970s. Given their resonance, the paper positions current demands for change in architecture education and the profession concerning their equivalent in the late 1960s when the IAUS was founded. This paper will ask whether a change in architecture and non-Eurocentric educational models following the 1960s struggles and upheavals were delayed with the appearance and success of the IAUS in New York City. The paper argues, through a critical reading of their media apparatus (exhibitions, lectures, classes, journals, and books), notably the ambitious OPEN PLAN series, and their undeniable success, that the IAUS’s reinstated a Eurocentric legacy—delaying change, the reckoning of architecture’s role in racial, social, and political asymmetries, and advanced architectural disciplinary ideas’ marketization in an emerging neoliberal rationale. Finally, this paper discusses existing scholarly work around the IAUS and first-hand research from the IAUS’s collection archived at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal.

This report is adapted from the forthcoming Climate Instruments for the Transport Sector (CITS) report written by Cornie Huizenga, convener of the Partnership for Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT), and Stefan Bakker, from the Energy Research Center of the Netherlands. Under the CITS project, studies were carried out in two Asian and two Latin American cities to explore how NAMAs, a new financial mechanism being developed under the UNFCCC, may support emissions reductions from urban transport policies and programs. The authors received valuable input from: Dario Hidalgo, from EMBARQ/World Resources Institute, for the Belo Horizonte case study; Frederic Rudolph, Urda Eichhorst and Wolfgang Sterk, from Wuppertal Institute, for the Hefei case study; Holger Dalkmann and Ko Sakamoto, from Transport Research Laboratory, for the Jakarta case study; and Martina Jung and Christian Ellermann, from ECOFYS, for the Mexico case study. This report was edited by Peter Shifter. The CITS project was guided by Rafael Acevedo-Daunas, Maria Cordeiro, Vera Lucia Vicentini, Maria Netto and Francisco Arango at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and by Jamie Leather and Sharad Saxena at the Asian Development Bank (ADB). At the request of the Fire Department City of New York (FDNY), UL’s Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) instrumented and documented a series of 12 thermal exposure hose experiments that were conducted in the burn compartment of an FDNY flashover simulator. The main objective of the experiments was to observe the performance of fire hoses exposed to the heat flux from flaming hot gas layer conditions above the hose. FDNY collected a variety of hose types that represented a cross section of commercially available materials and construction methods. The thermal exposures generated in the burn compartment were measured. The fire experiments were stopped once the hose being examined began to lose water through the wall of the hose. All of the hoses lost water through their wall, although the size of the holes and the amount of water leakage varied. While the burn compartment provided a “fire room environment” and different types of hose failures were demonstrated, the thermal exposure within the compartment was not demonstrated to be repeatable. Therefore it is not possible to develop a comparable rank or rating of the fire resistance of these hoses from this series of experiments.
