Abstract (sommario):
Europeans are regular consumers of fish and aquaculture products. Therefore, five species of potential aquaculture rearing named: Meagre, Pikeperch, Grey Mullet, Greater Amberjack and Wreckfish were selected for new product development. This work incorporated opinions of both experts and naïve assessors thus, including specific demands and consumer preferences, in selected markets of the European Union (UK, Germany, Spain, France and Italy). Different fish product prototypes were developed from the fish species accordingly with suggested ideas and based on the physicochemical and sensory properties of the selected species. Six of these products were chosen, based on their level of processing and addressed market. Consumers perception of all six of them was also assessed in the five selected countries. As it turned out the image/perception of the different products, differed in an important way between countries, as well as their impact on the product acceptance and purchase probability

Abstract (sommario):
Companies are demanded to introduce new products to market in order to satisfy diverse customer needs and be competent in relation to competitors. In addition to traditional, full-scale new product development (NPD), lighter development models have recently been researched. Rapid product development (RaDe) is a new agile product development model aiming to aid companies to adjust quickly to changing customer needs. Whether new products are introduced by lengthy NPD or quick and agile RaDe, it should be ensured that development activities are aligned with company strategy and that new products enhance the overall profitability of the company. Business case analysis investigates the business value of a new product initiative. Generally, market assessment inputs estimations of market potential and attractiveness into the business case analysis and thus functions as the basis for anticipated sales volumes and sales prices. Expected revenues are compared with life cycle cost predictions in order to conduct financial analysis presenting the attractiveness of the new product initiative in chosen financial metrics. However, there is a lack of business case analysis methodology on product portfolio level, and this study seeks to address this research gap. This research is an explorative and qualitative case study using constructive approach. The results of this study include a concept for calculating financial metrics for new sales item so that product portfolio level changes in sales are taken into account. The developed concept seeks to be eligible for NPD- and RaDe-contexts alike. The essence of the concept is comparison of the anticipated net cash flows for the sales items that are affected by the new item’s introduction in two scenarios. In first scenario, it is assumed that the new item is not introduced at all and the anticipated net cash flows are calculated based on that assumption over the new item’s life cycle. The second scenario calculates the net cash flows for the affected items taking into account the likely impact the new item has on the sales of those items. The differences of net cash flows between these two scenarios are taken into account as a cash outflow or inflow for corresponding time period when calculating net cash flow based financial metrics for the new sales item. In addition, this study introduces a proposition of a concept for product portfolio level sales planning and follow-up. In this concept, the sales plan consists of the planned sales volumes and the planned sales prices for individual sales items. Both target setting and follow-up of actual execution should be implemented on the level of volume and price so that the unit of planning is revenue (volume * price). Targeted and actual sales figures for individual sales items are further rolled up to upper commercial product portfolio levels. This enables analysis and comparison of targeted and actual sales performance on each product portfolio level
Yritykset joutuvat esittelemään uusia tuotteita markkinoille tyydyttääkseen moninaiset asiakastarpeet ja pitääkseen itsensä kilpailukykyisenä suhteessa kilpailijoihin. Perinteisen, täyden mittakaavan tuotekehityksen (New Product Development — NPD) lisäksi hiljattain on tutkittu kevyempiä ja nopeampia tuotekehitysmalleja. Nopea tuotekehitys (Rapid Product Development — RaDe) on yksi tällaisista ketteristä tuotekehitysmalleista. Se pyrkii auttamaan yrityksiä vastaamaan uusiin asiakasvaatimuksiin nopeasti. Riippumatta siitä, kehitetäänkö uusi tuote täysimittaisella tuotekehityksellä vaiko nopealla tuotekehityksellä, tärkeää on varmistaa että kehitettävä tuote on yrityksen strategian mukainen ja todennäköisesti parantaa yrityksen kokonaistuottavuutta. Business case analyysi arvioi uuden tuoteidean liiketoiminnallista arvoa. Ensimmäisessä skenaariossa vaikutuksenalaisille nimikkeille lasketaan nettokassavirrat uuden nimikkeen elinkaaren yli oletuksella, ettei uutta nimikettä tuoda ollenkaan portfolioon. Toisessa skenaariossa vaikutuksenalaisille myyntinimikkeille lasketaan nettokassavirrat huomioiden uuden tuotteen todennäköinen vaikutus näiden nimikkeiden myyntiin.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MTech (Mechanical Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2010
Many companies are currently focusing on how to stay innovative, how to innovate and how to create an innovation climate in their companies. Why is innovation vital to companies? New Product Development (NPD) can be a key factor in this regard. Companies believe that NPD is their life blood; it can be the better way to survive firmly and be more competitive. In addition, the strategy of how to manage NPD process effectively and efficiently is becoming a powerful way of achieving a competitive edge. As Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play a significant role in South African economic development, it is critical for companies especially (SMEs) to seek an ideal way to manage innovation productively. However, to be innovative is not easy for any organization and it should be managed effectively. The effective management of innovation and NPD in SMEs is investigated in this study. Innovation and NPD has already become the key drivers of sustainability and competitiveness for many companies especially SMEs. Innovation and NPD as the main subjects that are carefully studied, discussed and understood in larger corporations and multinational enterprises. It would appear that the same cannot always be said when it comes to SMEs.

Abstract (sommario):
This PhD covers three fields of synthetic organic chemistry devoted to the synthesis of new materials based on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the development of new metal-catalyzed synthetic methodology, and the synthesis of natural product derivatives. The development of new strategies for the precise synthesis of structurally well-defined novel graphene cutouts is a field of great interest due to their potential implementation in molecular electronic devices. Particularly interesting PAHs are disc-shaped fragments of graphene because of their unique optoelectronic and self-assembly properties, which are predicted to be enhanced for expanded systems. In this context, an efficient synthesis of a new discotic highly symmetric C54H20 graphene fragment – tetrabenzocircumpyrene – was developed and the electronic properties of this new graphene fragment were examined by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Acenes consist of planar sets of linearly fused benzene rings and represent another appealing class of PAHs due to their semiconducting properties. Nonetheless, their applicability in electronic devices is limited by their poor solubility and their inherent instability. One approach to circumvent these limitations is the preparation of more stable partially saturated derivatives, which can be used as precursors of the conjugated systems. Thus, a selective method for the preparation of partially saturated acenes under mild reaction conditions was developed based on a gold(I)-catalyzed cyclization of suitable 1,7-enynes that were assembled from a common precursor. The method proved to be general and allowed the preparation of functionalized dihydrotetracenes, as well as larger hydroacenes with up to nine linearly fused rings. The outstanding ability of gold(I) complexes to construct complex polycyclic frameworks was also examined in the context of the synthesis of natural products. Thus, the gold(I)-catalyzed alkoxycyclization of cyclopropyl-tethered 1,6-enynes allowed the ready assembly of the [3,5,5,7] tetracyclic skeleton of Echinopines, which opened an entry for the preparation of functionalized derivatives of these natural products.

Hirunyawipada, Tanawat. "How componential factors and constraint enhance creativity in the development of new product ideas". Thesis, University of North Texas, 2007. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc3964/.

Abstract (sommario):
New product ideation is the transformation of a raw idea into a robust concept with consideration of fit and feasibility of technologies, customer benefits, and market opportunity. Although the ideation process often involves ambiguous processes, it is the most critical activity in new product development (NPD). As a creativity task, the ideation process is considered heuristic rather than algorithmic. However, managing the ideation process as either a completely heuristic or an entirely algorithmic procedure leads to just conventional outcomes. Rooted in cognitive psychology, this study proposes that ideation activities in NPD should be pursued as Simonton's "constrained stochastic behavior." An ideation task not only needs good componential factors but also requires constraint to frame the task by precluding unwieldy ideas while promoting high variability of ideas. Focusing on the inputs and attempting to strike a balance between algorithmic and heuristic ideation process may provide the mechanisms to manage the psychological perceptions with an aim to stimulate and orchestrate the ideation staff's cognitive efforts to generate the creative idea. To achieve this goal, new product idea creativity is considered as the ideas that could turn out to be products that are novel to and useful for customers, and appropriate to firms' existing production systems. In addition, the study asserts that componential factors include two factors: specialization representing idea creators' depth of NPD knowledge, experience, and skills in a product domain, and diverse expertise representing the breadth of ideation team's knowledge, experience, and skills concerning the same domain of NPD. These factors are essential and collectively can enhance creativity in the development of new product ideas. Finally, goal constraint is defined, operationalized, and incorporated in the NPD ideation framework. This constraint encapsulates the overall criteria and stylistic principle for a particular product domain and reflects the frame of reference for new product idea development. The findings provide mixed results, and yield at least three new concepts. First, the process of new product idea development truly requires specialization and diverse expertise if its ultimate goal is creativity. Both componential factors are essential and together can enhance new product ideas on all important dimensions. Second, goal constraint exhibits a linear relationship, rather than an inverted U-curve relationship, with idea newness and usefulness-two dimension of creativity important for customers. Finally, goal constraint can enhance creative outcomes of new product ideas, especially in the ideation team exhibiting a low level of specialization.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of the research undertaken for this thesis was to examine management practices relating to new product development processes in small to medium-sized manufacturing firms (SMEs). The thesis topic has its origins in a European Community funded research project carried out during 1997-9 and designated CIMA (Continuous Improvement in Global Innovation Management) ESPRIT project 26056. The CIMA project had as its objective the development, testing and dissemination of a methodology to support knowledge transfer in the product innovation process. The CIMA model suggested a relationship between management behaviours and performance outcomes that used literature from a variety of research areas including continuous improvement, product innovation, performance measurement, and inter-project learning. This literature was centred largely on research undertaken in large organisations, with little information available on the new product development (NPD) practices in SMEs. This thesis sought to examine the management of NPD activities in SMEs across a range of important variables as identified in larger organisations in an effort to evaluate whether they were as relevant in smaller organisations. The literature review reduced the research to four broad questions: 1.what is the relationship between a business unit’s competitive strategy and its new product development strategy, 2.how management involvement in improving NPD performance, 3.does a more systematic approach to management of NPD projects would lead to better outcomes, and finally 4.how new product development performance is measured in SMEs. A two-stage, field based research methodology was used to gather data for this thesis. Firstly, a quantitative survey instrument was used to collect data across a broad range of variables. The data thus gathered were supported by a subsequent set of interviews in three SMEs that. In each of these firms, employees from the broad functional areas of sales, operations, and design, were interviewed to gain a greater understanding of the issues that might emerge in the quantitative survey. Thematic analysis was used to examine the qualitative data. Descriptive statistics, in the main were used to evaluate the quantitative data. Findings relevant to each of the research questions provide valuable insights into NPD practices in SMEs. For instance, strategies tend to be hazy, and have a short term emphasis. The qualitative interviews in particular showed a lack of certainty and direction when it came to strategy. With regard to management involvement, there was more emphasis on individual effort rather than team-based activities. Managers tended not to look for external sources to improve their NPD performance. The approach taken in managing NPD activities, whether it was systematic or informal, did not appear to affect innovativeness, though it did appear to impact other variables such as time-to-market. Finally, performance measurement in SMEs tended to emphasise cost outcomes as opposed to variables critical to customers such as conformance quality or time-to-market. Further, outcomes in those performance dimensions did not appear to influence future strategy or actions within the organisations. A detailed review of the data is provided in chapters five, six and seven.

Abstract (sommario):
Two terrestrial organisms were explored for biologically active and/or novel components. The genus Paeonia has long been know to contain numerous components that display a vast array of biological activities. The extract of P. lutea showed significant antiviral activity. Using bioassay-guided separation techniques three previously known compounds, paeonol (11), paeoniflorigenone (10) and methyl gallate (16), were identified using mass spectrometry and NMR techniques. These components showed varying biological activities and constituted the majority of the bioactivity in P. lutea. The chemistry of the New Zealand fungus Favolaschia calocera had not previously been investigated. A crude extract showed significant cytotoxicity against the P388 cell line and through bioassay-directed chromatography, 9-methoxystrobilurin L (33) was isolated as a novel cytotoxic compound. The structure was determined by MS and NMR techniques including HMBC, HMQC, COSY and nOe enhancements. Two closely related novel compounds were also characterised from the F. calocera extract. These were methyl-4,6-(E,E)-3-benzoyl-7-phenylheptadienoate (35) and the corresponding free carboxylic acid (36). Neither were found to have significant biological activity in the assays screened. A mixture of triglycerides (34) was also isolated and was analysed using NMR techniques followed by transesterification and GCMS analysis of the corresponding methyl esters.

Abstract (sommario):
The roots of a species of New Zealand native flax, Phonnium tenax and a commercial herbal preparation of the root were examined for novel or biologically active compounds. The species Phormium tenax has been examined chemically in the past and has yielded a number of novel and biologically active compounds. Missing from this body of work was an investigation into an aqueous extract of the roots of the plant. The commercial herbal preparation, "Fluid of Flax, Manaaki Huia" was such an extract and from this three novel aromatic glycosides were isolated. The herbal preparation was found to contain one biologically active compound, 1- 0-[β- glucopyranosyl-(16)-O-β-xylopyranosyl]-4-hydroxymusizin. The structure was identified by mass spectrometry and NMR techniques which included HMBC, HSQC, ID TOCSY and nOe enhancements. Two related glycosides, 1- 0-[β- glucopyranosyl-(16)-O-6-deoxy-β-mannopyranosyl]-4-hydroxymusizin and 1- 0-[β- glucopyranosyl-(16)-O-6-deoxy-β-mannopyranosyl]-musizin were isolated from a methanol extract directly from the roots of Phormium tenax. Both of these compounds were present as minor components in the herbal preparation. Neither of these glycosides showed any significant bioactivity in the in-house bioassays available.

Tropolones have antimalarial activity with a structure unique compared to current treatments. This study focuses on the development of new methods to prepare tropolones and devise a total synthesis of cordytropolone. A new synthesis of tropolones has been developed using thiophene-1,1-dioxides which are a versatile group of compounds that, to date, have been underutilised in organic synthesis. Substituted thiophene-1,1-dioxides can undergo Diels-Alder reactions with cyclopropenes to form cycloheptatrienes which can be converted to tropolone derivatives.

Abstract (sommario):
The goal of the researches that make up the present study was to explore the potential of C. cardunculus L. to be exploited for some new uses. Although the globe artichoke has deep roots in the culinary traditions of the Mediterranean countries, it requires nowadays innovations that remove the difficulties of its preparation and make it easier and faster to consume. The artichoke as a minimally processed and ready to use product addresses this need. The results presented in this thesis show that by choosing the right cultivar-packaging combination, it is possible to extend the shelf life of the product to at least 7 days from packaging. The cultivated and wild cardoon produce large amounts of biomass, even under low-input conditions, thanks to their hardiness and the perfect match with Mediterranean climate. The data provided in this thesis confirm the cardoon as a possible source of renewable energy, both for its biomass yield and for biomethane yield of its silage. The volume of biomethane produced from the ensiled cardoon (between 200 and 250 Nm3 per t DM) is comparable to that produced by the ryegrass silage, triticale and wheat. Silage of cultivated cardoon genotypes achieved volumes of biomethane (from 3,700 to 4,530 Nm3 ha-1) that are comparable to those obtained with maize grown under an intermediate input intensity regime. Much of the biomass produced by globe artichoke plants remains in the field as crop residues, this biomass can be exploited for the production of bioethanol, considering its richness in complex carbohydrates (cellulose and hemicellulose) and even in simple sugars (glucose and fructose ). The enzymatic saccharification of non-pretreated biomass of residues of two globe artichoke cvs. ('Opera F1' and Spinoso sardo') has given rise to a potential yield of 85-109 kg of EtOH per t DM and 1,440-1,520 kg of EtOH per ha.

Abstract (sommario):
This doctoral dissertation is triggered by an emergent problem: how can firms reinvent themselves? Continuity- and change-oriented decisions fundamentally shape overtime the activities and potential revenues of organizations and other adaptive systems, but both types of actions draw upon limited resources and rely on different organizational routines and capabilities. Most organizations appear to have difficulties in making tradeoffs, so that it is easier to overinvest in one of them than to successfully achieve a mixture of both. Nevertheless, theory and empirical evidence suggest that too little of either may reduce performance, indicating a need to learn more about how organizations reconcile these tensions. In the first paper, I moved from the consideration that rapid changes in competitive environments increasingly require firms to be “ambidextrous” implementing organizational mechanisms and structures that allow continuity- and change-oriented activities to be engaged at the same time. More specifically, I show that continuity- and change-related decisions can’t be confined either inside or outside the firm, but span overtime across distinct decision domains located within and beyond the organizational boundaries. Reconciling static and dynamic perspectives of ambidexterity, I conceptualize a firm’s strategy as a bundle of decisions about product attributes and components of the production team, proposing a multidimensional and dynamic model of structural ambidexterity that explains why and how firms could manage conflicting pressures for continuity and change in the context of new products. In the second study I note how rigorous systematic evidence documenting the success of ambidextrous organizations is lacking, and there has been very little investigation of how firms deal with continuity and change in new products. How to manage the transition form a successful product to another? What to change and what to keep? Incumbents that deal with series of products over time need to update their offerings in order to have the most relevant attributes to prospect clients without disappoint the current customer base. They need to both match and anticipate consumers’ preferences, blending something old with something new to satisfy the current demand and enlarge the herd by appealing to newer audiences. This paper contributes to strategic renewal and ambidexterity-related research with the first empirically assessment of a positive consumer response to ambidexterity in new products. Also, this study provides a practical method to monitor overtime the degree to which a brand or a firm is continuity- or change- oriented and evaluate different strategy profiles across two decision domains that play a pivotal role in new products: product attributes and components of the production team.

Abstract (sommario):
It is widely believed among researchers as well as practitioners that there is a link between new product newness, or innovativeness, and benefits to the firm developing and marketing a product; more innovative products are generally expected to create more profit and growth. However, research findings are conflicting—positive-, negative-, and no-relationship have been reported between product newness and benefits by different researchers. Moreover, most research has been confined to hardware products. Software is a different kind of product. It is marked by low industry entry barrier, low marginal cost of production, intense competition for quick market leadership, subject to increasing rate of return, et al. An ever larger part of investments in new products consist of computer software, software that is used in PCs, control industrial processes and give products like mobile phones, cameras and cars new features. To what extent newness gives benefits in software development is however still un-researched. Thus, the purpose this study was formulated as: To explore effect of newness of new software products on the benefits to the firms. To fulfill this research purpose, first we had to find out “What are the relevant elements of (i) newness, and (ii) benefits of new products” in the context of firms that develop and market computer software products? This part of the study is reported in Part I. In a second step the effect of product newness on benefits was investigated quantitatively. This part of the study is reported in Part II. Part I is based upon semi-structured in-depth interviews of managers responsible for seven new software products in firms from Finland, India, Sweden and the US. Supplementary secondary data were collected from archival sources to write case descriptions of each software product. Within- and cross-case inductive analysis of seven-case database led to identification of relevant elements of newness and benefits. As newness elements, distribution technology, and complementary technological-, and marketing-resources were found to be vital; as benefits element, non-monetary benefits of new products stood out. Part II reports a quantitative study involving 321 Swedish software firms. Data were collected through a Web-survey, using a questionnaire based on findings of Part I, and analyzed through Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling. Findings indicate that marketing fit, and technological familiarity enhance product-level benefits, whereas technological fit, and familiarity enhance firm-level benefits. From the three environmental factors only aggressive marketing practices was found to be of significance. Neither switching costs nor computer mediated transactions was found to have any moderating role on product newness and new product benefits relationship. Overall, this study extends previous research in the area of product newness-new product benefits and fills the gap in the literature (i) by developing grounded measures for operationalizing new product newness and benefits concepts in the context of software product firms, and (ii) by identifying significant elements of new product newness that affect new product benefits. By limiting to a particular industry, this study provides useful findings—for both researches of new product development, and for managers in software firms—such as marketing fit, and technological familiarity enhance product-level benefits, whereas technological fit, and technological familiarity enhance firm-level benefits.

Abstract (sommario):
It is widely believed that with the transition from the industrial to information-based economics, organizational knowledge has emerged as the single most critical resource at both macro and micro levels, which promotes the creation, sharing, and leveraging of the organization???s knowledge in current Customer Order Driven Engineering (CODE) environment. Insufficient knowledge management, hence lack of a structured Enterprise Knowledge Base (EKB) in a CODE environment, whilst involved in New Product Development (NPD) process may result in several problems resulting in creating less successful products. This research establishes an ???Enterprise Knowledge Base (EKB) framework??? with focus on the Product, Process and Organizational issues related to the NPD process. The framework has three major stages, namely ???Knowledge Acquisition???, ???Knowledge Organizing??? and ???Knowledge Validating???. Various frameworks/methods/models are developed as steps for each of these stages. The framework may increase the effectiveness of product and process development as well as enterprise competitiveness through developing a system architecture to understand, analyse and map organisational, operational activities and business objectives; and increasing the ability of an organisation to establish an integrated partnerships to share efforts on the design, manufacture and delivery of products. In knowledge acquisition stage, a ???Knowledge Capture framework??? and the ???Relationship matrices??? are developed to analyse and link the generic knowledge items of a NPD process in concurrent engineering environment. Among the relationship matrices, Task versus Task (Design Structure Matrix - DSM) matrix is comprehensively explored and decomposed to structure and link several processes at different levels for effective representation of the overall enterprise representation. In knowledge organizing stage, the acquired knowledge (important relations identified in the Task versus Task matrices) is represented in the form of ???Questionnaires???. Best practices gathered from several manufacturing firms in NPD in CODE have also been used as knowledge resource base for the Questionnaires. For grouping and validation of these Questionnaires, an ???Assessment Model??? is developed, which consists of five performance indicators of the organization namely ???Marketing???, ???Technical???, ???Financial???, ???Resource Management???, and ???Project Management???. Industry applications are carried out in two Australian Manufacturing Companies for the validation of the acquired knowledge. Two tests are carried out; in order to assess the sensitivity of question categories followed by another test to observe whether the model can accurately display the overall performance of the company in the five categories of NPD phases. These two tests have identified possible improvement areas in the NPD process of manufacturing organizations involved in the validation phase. Up to 80% of the findings of the EKB framework and assessment model were found to reflect the actual practices of the organizations.

Abstract (sommario):
The halichondrins, isolated from the Kaikoura sponge Lissodendoryx sp., are a series of polyether macrolides displaying potent in vivo antitumour activity. As such, they represent important leads as potential anticancer drugs. This research was focused on methodology that would enhance and complement the progress of halichondrins toward clinical trials. A method was established for transforming 53-methoxyneoisohomohalichondrin B, an artefact of the methanol extraction method, to the more useful isohomohalichondrin B. A by-product of this acid treatment was identified as the C38 epimer of isohomohalichondrin B. The equilibrium character of the C38 epimerisation was studied. The production of halichondrins by aquacultured Lissodendoryx sp. has been confirmed. Haptens presenting the macrocyclic portion of the halichondrins were produced using three different linkers PMPI, PMSI and EMCR. The chemistry required to selectively oxidise the C26 methylene was established. A polymer drug conjugate incorporating a halichondrin species has been prepared. This required the modification of homohalichondrin B to form an amino halichondrin.

House-Autry Mills is a food manufacturing company located in Eastern North Carolina. It produces a variety of products including corn meals, breaders, hushpuppies and biscuits. House-Autry Mills has been producing these types of products for over 200 years and is always looking for ways to promote and expand its business. Before House-Autry Mills decides to add a new line of products, it must conduct a lot of research and evaluate the success in this potential market. The purpose of this thesis is to look at the data available, and determine if grits will be a good fit for House-Autry, and for the market in general. Chapter I is an introduction to the entire thesis project. Much of the literature I reviewed deals with successfully bringing new products to the market. It also goes through an eight-step decision making process when determining if the project should be worked on, or if the project should be dropped at various stages. This is Chapter II of the thesis. The Methods and Data Collection section of this thesis is located in Chapter III. This chapter will go through the process of forming a focus group, screening the participants, and determining what types of questions should be asked, based on the feedback that the firm wants to receive. I also look at several data sets collected through Infoscan Resources, Inc. There are two chapters that contain the results. Chapter IV looks at the results found from the data collected, and chapter V looks at the results that were observed during the two focus groups findings. The final chapter is where my conclusion and recommendations are listed. I included the action that House-Autry Mills took, and also my thoughts on that action. The section goes through different recommendations including the market first approached, risk involved in the new product, the benefit of keeping the price competitive, and the eventual expansion of the line.
