This study aimed at investigating how Internet users are dealing with the increase of interaction possibilities brought about by new communication devices and, specially, by the e-mail. An investigation was carried out with fifteen men and women who were at least twenty-five years old and had been using the Internet and e-mail programs for at least a year. An open-ended-question interview was conducted with each of them. After transcribed, the material collected in these interviews was analyzed through discourse analysis techniques. The results of this analysis made it possible to identify the emergence of three types of excess concerning the new forms of interaction: the excess of interaction, the excess of demand for interaction and the excess of incoming messages. These results also made it possible to conclude that these users are using different forms to deal with these excesses and to defend themselves from them. They give priority to urgent messages, open different e-mail accounts in order to separate different levels of intimacy, use at least one extra account so that they do not have to inform their personal address to sites or people they do not trust, quickly delete undesirable messages, use a special moment of the day to read and reply messages, and, finally, control - as well as reduce - the amount of e-mail contacts.

Testo completoThe new age has its origin in California and stems from the hippie movement. It's a trend marked by a world model very different from that of the western culture. This research explores different new age sources - from its beginings in previous centuries to its emergence in the modern world of the 70's - on historical, philosophical, sociocultural, artistic, scientific and religious levels. This research shows mat the new age, born in western christian society, draws several of its conceptions from other cultures : shamanism, hinduism, buddhism. This work also describes the concrete and psycho-mental tools and techniques which the new age makes use of and explains the paradigm and myths which grounds it: its rejection of christianity, of the rationalist science and of the predatory aspects of the western world, as well as the acceptance of a magical and mystical conception of the world. This work results in the updating of the archetype which underlines the new age, that of the + nonordinary healer of the world ;, i. E. A conviction - for the follower of the new age - of having outstanding powers of a magical nature, in order to provoke the transformation of the modern society to a golden age

Testo completoA competition is the rivalry between economic subjects selling (exporting) similar products and services with the goal of achieving revenue (domestic income) and market share growth. This is a core of the success or failure of a particular economic system. A competition may exist not only between companies. It may also exist between countries (the global competition); products (to reach a consumer’s “basket”); proactive and reactive business models; ideas or projects (for better funding); people (at the labor market); people and machines (in the new age of automation and digitalization of many business processes). Today, as many years ago, an important component of commercial success is the value created. However, the system of factors influencing the value created is becoming wider. The ratio of the costs of the main activity and the supporting activity comes to the fore.

When the cocktail of AIDS drugs called highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) was introduced in 1997, it radically changed the picture of HIV and AIDS in the U.S. Deaths from AIDS plummeted by two-thirds. Now, far fewer people are progressing along the once-inevitable path to illness and death. The impact of new therapy has been both dramatic and double-edged: it has spared tens of thousands from death, but has complicated their lives in countless ways. This newspaper series in five parts examines the new landscape of AIDS in the aftermath of success - a success that is still incomplete as there is still no cure. The new therapies carry literal side effects - the toxicities of drugs that infected individuals must take everyday for the rest of their lives. But the drugs have also created social and political side effects as AIDS is transformed to an increasingly chronic disease. The series relays the stories of HIV-infected individuals, clinicians, social workers, and AIDS service and prevention workers in Boston and examines how their lives and work have changed now that AIDS is no longer seen as a "crisis" in the U.S.

Testo completoD.M.A
The Age of Innocence is an opera based on the 1920 novel by Edith Wharton. Set in New York high society of the 1870's, it tells the story of Newland Archer, a young lawyer, his fiancée May Welland, and her cousin, the Countess Ellen Olenska, who has returned to her native New York in an aura of scandal, having left her husband, the dissolute Polish Count Olenski, in Europe. Although Archer and Ellen fall in love, he nevertheless follows the expectations of his family and marries the lovely but conventional May. For her part, while she sees a life with Archer as an escape from her loneliness, Ellen cannot allow herself to betray her cousin, insisting that she and Archer can love each other only if they remain apart. This love triangle is unique because of the social pressures placed upon Archer: he is a product of New York society, which has taught him to believe in the factitious idea of female innocence, as personified by May. Though he questions this and other conventions of his society, he is unable to bring himself to abandon the safety of these social norms that govern every aspect of proper behavior in New York. It is Archer's love for Ellen that prompts him to challenge these standards, pointing out New York's hypocrisy in welcoming May's cousin back to America while at the same time treating her as a pariah for abandoning her husband in Europe. None of their objections to Ellen is explicitly stated, however, for this is a world which has a morbid fear of "the unpleasant"--that is, anything that would disturb the calm surface of society's politesse and social grace. It comes as no surprise, then, that Archer's desire for Ellen (especially after he marries May), becomes a potential social nightmare for his family and all of New York, as they ruthlessly plot to drive the two apart, and send Ellen back to Europe. The main challenge in creating an opera out of this story, in addition to streamlining a lengthy and complex plot, was to delineate both in the libretto and the music the realms of the said and unsaid--that is, what the characters say in public, and what they say to themselves or to others that represents their innermost feelings. In the libretto, this was achieved by drawing upon Wharton's dialogue and narration in the novel in order to create these private and public utterances, in the form of recitatives, arias, duets, or ensemble pieces. The language of the libretto has been fashioned to serve these different musical forms, with dialogue from the novel employed in moments of recitative; and freely-metered verse, with a modest use of rhyme, for the "numbers" of the opera. The music, meanwhile, employs a system of codes to define the realms of the said and unsaid--motives, sonorities and key relationships that bring into focus the interactions of the characters, especially Archer, Ellen and May as their drama plays out under the ever-watchful eyes of New York society. The music has also been rendered to bring out the stresses and meter of the text, and heighten the import of the words as sung by a particular character. I have attempted in my opera to bring to life the timeless themes of Wharton's novel: unfulfilled love, the individual versus society, the potential corrupting influence of desire, and the moral choices that human beings face as they wrestle with these common issues. Opera, through the language of music, is one of the few art forms capable of fully realizing these themes in a dramatic context--in this sense, it is just as relevant to our time as it was to Wharton's, and therefore remains a viable medium for the twenty-first-century composer.
