Testo completoBackground building processses, although their unstanding entails important theoretical and social issues, remain widely ingnored. This thesis introduces a research about these processes. They were studied from a set point of view which consisted in (re)buiding the possible understanding of situations that are built on the interpretative activity dynamics during action: "interpretative learning". The field of study is based on the actual teaching activity by windsail training teachers. The methodology consisted in filming the trainees, carrying out selh-help interviews and establishing a model of their action (mainly in its interpretative side). This results in eleven interpretative learning processes, as well as their interactions and social layouts which eased or inhibited them. Decision making prospects, to help the design of training programs, were developped

Testo completoSailing is a physically and cognitively demanding multidisciplinary sport with sailors competing in the presence of multifaceted performance-related stressors. The high level of stress sailors face during training and competition ignites the necessity for a better understanding of the dose-response relationship related to sailing work-load (WL). Indeed, WL monitoring of sailors must be practised extensively to; a) adapt the training schedule, b) provide the skipper with valuable information on potential risks of injury and overtraining, and c) ensure adequate recovery program-ming to enhance performance. Hence, quantifying the WL in professional sailors in-volves multiple aspects to properly investigate the training and competition dose-response relationship. Historically, monitoring WL in elite sports environments has been based on the theoretical “general adaptive syndrome” model, whereby performance can be predicted through variables of fitness and fatigue over acute and chronic mathematical systems. However, offshore sailing has received limited inter-est concerning WL and its’ effects on morphological, physical, and physiological ad-aptations. Furthermore, the scarcity of data in such unexplored environments makes it a strenuous task for human performance practitioners aiming at planning and structuring efficient training interventions. This thesis contains three studies that aim to build a novel conceptual model of WL analysis by identifying valid and reliable monitoring assessments that relate to competition performance in professional offshore sailing. Study One attempted to overcome the common misconception that sailing is considered a “light” exercise (Bernardi et al., 1990) by proving that sailing performance is linked to fitness pro-files. The findings identified multiple physical variables able to discriminate be-tween successful- and less-successful sailors. Indeed, successful sailors were charac-terised by stronger handgrip, more powerful bench pull, and stronger isometric mid-thigh pull. Study Two observed and described the distribution of WL throughout a pre-competition period. Furthermore, it intended the identification of data smooth-ing mathematical models capable of predicting the effects of WL on neuromuscular performance, well-being, and salivary cortisol (SC). The results highlighted the com-plexity of managing high and variant WLs throughout a season. Significant associa-tions were also established between WL parameters and markers of subjective and objective fatigue. Moreover, monitoring tools were identified as valid and reliable methods for monitoring the preparedness of an offshore sailing crew. Hence some variables can be integrated into the monitoring systems used by human performance practitioners to enhance the efficiency of human resources. Data smoothing models, commonly used for analysing acute to chronic (acute : chronic) ratios, were found to be intuitive predictors of performance. Study Three explored the issue of understand-ing the effects of competition on the ‘fitness-fatigue’ model. It documented the char-acteristics of the race, described the physiological responses to competition, and ex-amined neurophysiological and psychological fatigue patterns. These findings can greatly assist strength and conditioning and nutritionists alike in elaborating adapted interventions capable of enhancing athletic and sailing performance

Testo completoThis research work focuses on the identity dynamics of Sports Educators that are holders of the State Certificate and who work in sailing circles. From a definition of professional identity combining the works of C. Dubar, J. M. Barbier and M. Kaddouri, and through a double procedure, we have established a profile of this activity and of its actors, by picking out the main identity dynamics. The thorough study of these dynamics shows the existence of five profiles corresponding to clearly different modes of fitting in with the occupation. In the face of really different working conditions, the results of the qualitative analysis show that these educators all develop a strategy to adapt that allows them to last in such an insecure professional activity. These strategies of varied actions have a direct influence on the professional identity and seek a common goal, which is to strengthen the " identity for oneself " as opposed to the negative attribution that hangs over these activities. These strategies of actions at work, given prominence by the identification of the operative components of professional practices, also show to which extent the conduct of a practice is one of the elements of the production of identity and skills that the institutions do not always acknowledge

Testo completoThe problem of performance in extreme sailing navigation has been very little studied using rigorous scientific methods consistently and at an angle of view in global environmental conditions. Our work sought to evaluate human behavior in ecological conditions with environmentalist and transactional approach. The main objective of this thesis was to understand what the impact of environmental factors such as wind strength and the amount of sleep as well as cognitive stimulation using a video self-modeling on perception of anxiety, fatigue and exercise tolerance in maximal aerobic speed. The results of the first study, ecological condition, where the influence of wind and sleep deprivation were modeled using the tool transfers functions, has to understand that the sailor makes a time- dependent regulation of its commitment and efforts and hardships such as that of sleep. This regulation is related to the perception of anxiety and intensity of perceived fatigue and is influenced by environmental factors such as wind or sleep deprivation. This study also showed that there is a relationship between the duration of the engagement, as measured by the number of days at sea, and the amount of sleep needed, allowing withstand environmental conditions. A second study in extreme conditions, this time with a crew of two people using the same protocol confirmed that the amount of sleep was the best activator can act on anxiety and allow its better regulation. A third study, we showed that the tolerance to stress, as measured by perceived exertion, was not exclusively coupled to a physiological response but also cognitive factors. The main result of this pilot study was to show that the use of video feedback as cognitive stimulation significantly reduces the perception of effort from 50 % of the duration of the event. Contrary to what might be expected, no effect was observed on heart rate. All of these results suggest the importance of the interaction environment - individual in extreme environments, and in a test conducted to the limits of exhaustion. These results open interesting perspectives in the fields of sports training and rehabilitation

Advanced automotive technology such as adaptive cruise control and navigation systems are becoming ever more popular. With all of the technology to aid the driver, it is difficult to recognize when the technology used to inform the driver is more of a distraction than a benefit. Specifically, the user interaction associated with navigation systems has not been perfected. In response, the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at MIT has created City Browser, an in-vehicle naturalistic navigation system that allows the user to search an online database for points on interest and to find directions. To gain feedback on the operation of the system in order to improve it for consumer use, a user study was conducted with over 90 participants. Each subject was also separated into different demographic groups as to quantify the difference of age and gender on system interaction. During the course of the experiment, three different forms of data collection were obtained: self report questionnaires, audio recordings, and physiology measurements such as heart rate, breathing rate, and skin conductance. The results indicate that users' feel the system is enjoyable, useful, and easy to learn. At the same time, users were also displeased with the voice of the system and felt that operating the system required a high level of concentration. The system had a response accuracy of 54.7% and had tendency to recognize the voice of 25-34 and 45-54 year old males better than other demographic group. The physiological measurements taken from the study were deemed to be inconclusive for determining the task difficulty and hence, more testing and analysis is needed. Overall, the City Browser system has proven to be practical in allowing users access to real time directions and points of interest in the greater Boston area. The results from this user study will allow the system to continually develop into a product for consumer use.

Testo completoThis thesis is part of NKE Marine’s attempts to improve the quality of apparent and real wind measurementsprovided by its navigation unit. These improvements are expected to benefit both users and improve autopilot performance. The first part describes the specific context of wind measurement on a sailboat, and the inherent issues. This study identified two knotty scientific problems: on-board wind measurements recorded by the sensor (linked to its design and response model) and how the wind triangle is reconstructed. The first objective of this thesis is therefore to propose a new methodology for the design of the wind vane that can match the sensor’s profile with the boat’s characteristics and its route planning. Improvements to this aerial sensor make it possible, on the one hand, to divide the response time by two (via the optimization of the shape of the sensors) and, on the other hand, to provide a useful signal that is twelve times more sensitive (via the application of predictive signal processing techniques that take account of sensor dynamics). Next, previous work on the problem of reconstructing three-dimensional true wind is described in detail. This part begins with a presentation of the relevant standards and definitions of metrics, before examining some solutions that can take account of perturbations in apparent and true wind in the lower layer of the atmosphere. The following part examines current methods for reconstructing true wind. This analysis highlights the fact that these corrections are not applied in the correct frames. To overcome these problems, we propose a new approach to the reconstruction of the true wind, which implements the corrections described above. This manuscript ends with a presentation of the contribution to auto piloting. Specifically, it takes the form of a new concept, termed Super Mode, which can be overlaid onto classical modes of piloting. The aim is to improve safety in gusty conditions (Gust mode), and performance when surfing (Surf mode). The value of this innovation has been proven by competition victories; it has received an innovation award, and Surf mode is the subject of a patent application. The pilot is now able to glide like a human surfer. The final contribution to the autopilot concerns the integration of a new type of sensor: electronic telltales. Finally, this manuscript contributes to our overall understanding of the problems and nuances that must be taken into account when developing or using a navigation unit and an autopilot. The work highlights the close correlation between the various sensors and the data calculated by the navigation unit. Significant improvements to the accuracy of both elements can be obtained when the concept of predictive filtering is extended and appliedto the navigation unit as a whole
Gerke, Anna Christina. "The relationship between interorganisational behaviour and innovation within sport clusters". Thesis, Paris 11, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA113004/document.
Testo completoThis thesis investigates the relationship between interorganisational behaviour and innovation in sport clusters. Two central research questions are addressed. The first research question asks what constitutes a sport cluster. The second research question investigates the influence of interorganisational citizenship behaviour on product innovation in sport clusters. This thesis employs a multiple case study research design, investigating four cases in two sport sectors and three countries. The data collection consists of formal semi-structured interviews (103), explorative informal interviews (14), non-participatory observations (17), and secondary data (i.e. organisational information and archival data). The data collection and analysis is a combination of deduction and induction, hence an abductive approach. The research questions are informed by literature. However, data analysis includes inductive tactics. Data analysis processing consists of interview transcribing and report writing. Data was analysed with data coding in NVivo 10, frequency counts, report writing, within-case analysis, and cross-case analysis. Results reveal that sport clusters depend heavily on location-specific factors. Most important for sport cluster development and sustainability are geo-economic, socio-economic, and sport-related factors. Less important are political, geographical, and historical location-specific factors. These clusters comprise typical cluster organisations as members which include core equipment manufacturers, system suppliers, accessory suppliers, services providers, media, designers, professional and amateur sport, education/research institutions, and governing bodies. These cluster organisations are connected via formal and informal relationships and networks. The most common interorganisational behaviours within those linkages are advancement, altruism, loyalty, and collaboration. These behaviours enhance innovation in clusters. External links between cluster organisations are facilitated through interorganisational citizenship. These links foster innovation throughout the entire innovation process, particularly material innovation but also design and use innovation. This thesis suggests further research of sport clusters as well as the study of interorganisational citizenship behaviour and its outcomes

Testo completoNavigationssystem används ofta i våra dagliga liv.

Testo completoShipping conferences owned a big part in the word wid maritime traffic. Third world company usually couldn't enter this conferences and carries of thoses countries had to undergo increases in freight rates decided by thoses groups. The rules of commun law didn't permit to make shipping conferences accept a change of their attitude. Third world countries began in 1965 an action to modify the juridical statutes of shipping conference. This action gave on the international ground a "code of conduct of liner conferences" that aknonleged to every national compagny the right (under certain conditions) to enter shipping conferences and hence-forth the increase in freight rates are discussed an a bilateral basis. But the greatest and the most controversted rule of this code organises the assesment of the maritime traffic on non commercial basis

Testo completoFor a number of years, oceanographers and climatologists have been expressing the increasing need to have additional means in order to realize offshore measures. Autonomous sailboats are potential tools for helping to deploy the sensors required to carry out such tasks. In this thesis we address the problem of the determination of a navigable course for an autonomous sailboat, which is able to adapting itself to the immediate conditions of wind while guaranteeing obstacle avoidance. We propose two different approaches which can generate an admissible reference heading to drive the sailboat towards one or more desired waypoints specified by a human operator. The first technique based on cost functions is grounded on the strategy of speeds projection represented in the sailboat characteristic polar curve, a method which is widely used by human skippers. The second technique is based on the potential fields theory which has the advantage of unifying the representation of the sailing navigation constraints and the tasks to be realized. Simulation and experimental results are presented

Testo completoAfter several decades of discussion, the debate on the corporate interest gave the illusion of having exhausted its resources. This notion has been propelled at the heart of the new corporate law topics, including that of corporate governance. Since the advent of corporate governance in France, the role of corporate interest has taken a new dimension. However, other developments erode the concept, particularly the dematerialization of the business and social capital. Imminently, the emerging conflict between horizontality and verticality of corporate interest makes the latter evolve. This is especially true since corporate law has changed to better respond to such new economic demands that encouraged the emergence of interests. This change was particularly expressed by a subjectivation of the standard of law shaped by a proceduralisation of law as to promote greater democracy in societies. By phasing reason in the law, the legislatures have modernized the societies. But this modernization is more alike regression than progress because it establishes a return to the natural state of things. This profound transformation of corporate law did not remain without consequences for the corporate interest. By recognizing the existence of the diverging interests the positive law has dismantled the traditional function of corporate interest which was to hide or, at least veil, the inherent differences and contradictions of corporate life. Through the role of corporate interest, the assessment results and prospects of this fundamental concept of company law have arisen. Upon its evaluation, the role to be traditionally associated with the corporate interest has emerged. This role is to conceal the veil. Incidentally, it has given some answers as to the legal nature of the corporate interest, a topic which has much divided the scholars. This study proposes a new interpretation of this concept through a systematic approach that explores the procedural rationale, going in depth of the French legal system. By analyzing its prospects, this study found a lifting of the veil of corporate interest, which is part of the modernization of company law. Once the veil lifted, the law faces a pluralism of interests and conflicts. To accommodate this regressive trend of the law, this study proposes the consecration of a community of interests in support of social interest. In this regard, the role of corporate interest changed from its concealment to its regulation, passing through its dissembling

Testo completoHepatocellular carcinoma is the most common primary cancer of the liver. Interstitial thermal ablation procedures constitute a type of curative treatments for this cancer. Given the physical nature of the phenomenon used to modify temperature (radio frequency, micro wave, laser, cryotherapy), those methods may not be able to generate a conformal treatment for a given tumor shape. In some cases, this limitation may induce the thermal ablation of a large volume of non-tumor tissues. The use of an ultrasound interstitial probe mounted with a multi-element transducer capable of generating high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) may theoretically help to overcome this limitation. Also a transducer with an important number of elements may also provide in situ imaging. As a first step, the design of a transducer for interstitial ultrasound probe was studied. A specific configuration has been proposed for the treatment of tumors with a diameter of 4 cm. The question of the treatment planning method to adopt to reach an optimal conformal treatment has been then addressed by comparing numerical simulations of different strategies. All strategies were sufficiently conformal and none presented real assets compared to the others. Ultrasound focusing in itself provided the desired conformal thermal ablation. Finally, a robotic platform was developed for driving interstitial dual mode ultrasound probes, both in imaging and in therapy mode. This platform allowed the automatic treatment planning of in vitro tumor mimic phantoms, based on 3D ultrasound reconstruction from the B mode images obtained in situ by the interstitial probe. However, in therapy mode, the probes did not reach their specifications and did not manage to create thermal lesions in in vitro liver tissue sample. The modularity of the robotic platform allowed driving a different HIFU system, which was more robust. With this system, the platform managed to perform with success an automatic treatment planning and then the associated HIFU treatment in in vitro tissue sample

From the ocean, vessels flowed in the river Vilaine estuary to Redon harbour. Upstream, small boats could reach Messac harbour, which was the term of the waterway. Further upstream, Rennes is located about thirty kilometers from Messac. Most city of Brittany, Rennes didn’t take full advantage of its situation on the banks of the river Vilaine. In the 16th century, the city council instigated the river Vilaine development between Messac and Rennes. The aim was to relate Rennes to the river-sea shipping. At the end of the 16th century, the river Vilaine was sustainably channeled thanks to a modern lock system. Navigation expanded to the city of Rennes. In the 17th century, the waterway became an essential supply line for Rennes

Testo completoToday, lot of parameters are analysed in real-time or in post-processing in order to optimize the boat performances. Therefore, more and more sensors and digital systems are used on sailboats. One of the most important parameter to analyze is the wind since this is the engine of sailing boats. However, the wind measurement is not accurate because it is disturbed by several phenomena. Currently, these errors are corrected by a navigation processor ; this system allows to merge data provided by multiple sensors to compute and correct the wind. Unfortunately, some corrections used by navigation processor are empirical. In this work, we propose a wind computation algorithm and a new method to establish the boat drift caused by the wind, the leeway. Initially, a model based on boat displacements is tested on simulation dataset in order to estimate the leeway. The results show the need to add a sensor to measure this drift. Then, we propose and compare several models coupled to this sensor to estimate the leeway. The results highlight the interest of these models to improve the accuracy and the reliability of the leeway measurement. In the second step, we have developed an open navigation processor to implement our wind computation algorithm. In this way, we can use any sensor and implement any algorithm ; we are no longer limited by current systems. During the final year, we tested and validated this prototype during the preparation of the C-Class catamaran for the Little America’s Cup

Testo completoThis dissertation focuses on a contemporary feminine phenomenon: the veiling of the face of French Muslim women between October 2008 and 2019, the year that marks the end of the Islamic State in Syria. This work is both textual and visual. It begins with a search for occurrences of facial veiling in Western culture, particularly in the Catholic monastic tradition, as well as in the different Muslim cultures, which today serve as a reference to the symbolic revivalism of an original Islam. The compilation of occurrences of facial veiling continues with a census of cultural and artistic productions, as well as different trends of modernity such as zentai and facekini. This study was conducted in real time following the appearance of a phenomenon related to its media coverage around its ban in 2010. The goal is to capture a manifestation of religiosity visible from an unprecedented angle: not as a simple religious fact, but as an expression of modernity, a transgression in relation to the traditional veil and the secular consensus of French society, perceived as eradicating the expression of Muslim identity. The niqab/veil is a reaction of opposition, not the resurgence of a culture of origin. It is also a subversive tool for a part of the French population who find in visible Islam a way to free themselves from state authority, especially since its demonstrations are the subject of a strong popular rejection. Not to mention more prosaic reasons that push some women to isolate themselves from society to protect themselves from invasive masculinity. This work seeks to capture a largely fantasized phenomenon, through empirical research with more than two hundred niqab wearing women enriched with interviews over a decade. Filming allowed me to set their speech and make five documentaries that serve as references to the demonstration

Testo completoVeils in Sacrifice of Iphigenia by Timanthes and Curtain by Parrhasius signify a problematisation of the Antiquity’s gaze and engender a hereafter which stratifies representation. The silence these works introduce within the image generates a phantastic activity, the founding basis of a visual poetry.Pala di San Marco adapts to a unified pictorial space the structure of Tabernacolo dei Linaioli already borrowed from the Tabernacle of Moses. Separating spaces of increased sacredness and in accordance with the exegetic reading, veils thicken the space and the meaning of the masterpiece, demanding at each stage a transformation of the viewers’ gaze. The exegesis identifying Marie to Arca Dei, the 15th century develops around her numerous forms which are epigones of the Tabernacle’s and become liable to encompass the viewer’s profane space. Deep within Annunciations of the Quattrocento, the veil revealed the thalamus virginis, metonymical belly of the Virgin Mary. This symbolism becomes eroded when the stage design evokes Mystery. The veil conveys metapictorial allusions or reveals vanity, intimacy, flesh. It « sacralizes » them as it did of Arca Dei or of the emperor. Unpredictably, all works become opened up to surprising transgressions, such as the eroticisation of Virgo lactans. Multiple visual metaphors alluding to what is problematic about representation, the veil supports the image of what it is hiding. The surfacing of the concealed becomes the artwork in itself. Skirting around Alberti’s precepts, this trade with the invisible connects the motif with the ancient concept, revived by La Pléiade, of a poetry whose motive is no other than to en-visage the ineffable

At the beginning of gear design, some parameters are optimized. They define the general gear geometry and fine tooth profile modifications. On the other hand, thin rims and webs are used in order to lighten the structure. Many studies have been realized on external gears, while less attention have been accorded to the internal gear behavior in the literature. The aim of this thesis is to simulate the internal gear meshing and to isolate the geometrical and mechanical parameters that affect the gear behavior. The 3D model is based on the Finite Prism Method. This method can be considered as a particular case of the Finite Element Method. The bulk surface deviations are taken into account. The numerical results concerning the displacements and the load sharing have been validated experimentally (speckle video). Results obtained using the numerical tool (PRINCE) have shown the influence of the geometrical and mechanical parameters (ring fixing conditions, misalignments…) on the gear behavior (meshing stiffness, instantaneous contact pressure, root stresses. . . ). Moreover, a developed parametric analysis permits to quantify the influence the rim thickness and of the web position on the 3D root stress variations

Testo completoThis research is the outcome of a montage intertwining contemporary art, film, and advertisement images with philosophical theory, following the direction set by two aesthetic figures that have traditionally been related to the notion of image, namely the mirror and the veil. What emerges is an unprecedented aesthetic figure, i. e., the prismatic veil, which, bouncing between the mirror and the veil, brings along an anti-dualistic interpretation of the world of the visible inspired by the Merleau-Pontian notion of flesh understood as a differential fabric in which things and beings only give themselves as differences with respect to all other things and beings. In the prismatic veil, the flesh is filtered through the Deleuzian notion of « crystal-image », and hence enriched with a faceted and multiple temporality that echoes Deleuze’s own reading of Nietzsche’s eternal return, and hence characterising it with a fundamental libidinal approach, which, in this study, is analysed with a particular emphasis on Lacan.By reacting to the Merleau-Pontian notion of flesh and to the mythical temporality that Merleau-Ponty himself associates to it, the temporality of the crystal-image makes the figure of the prismatic veil emerge as a sort of « flesh 2.0 », hence realising a contemporary theoretical tool aiming at favouring the understanding of the increasingly immersive and enveloping features of the present experience of images, including the implications that such an experience implies as for the identity of the viewer and for the perception of truth that is bond to his/her/their gaze. All this, without forgetting the aspect of seduction that characterises the visual universe, and hence confirming the intimate connection that intertwines images and desire

Testo completoSmall fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) provide utility to research, military, and industrial sectors at comparablyreasonable cost, but still suffer from both limited operational ranges and payload capacities. Thermal soaring flight for UAVsoffers a significant potential to reduce the energy consumption. However, without remote sensing of updrafts, a glider UAVcan only benefit from an updraft when encountering it by chance. In this thesis, a new framework for autonomous cross-country soaring is elaborated, enabling a glider UAV to visually localize sub-cumulus thermal updrafts and to efficiently gain energy from them.Relying on the Unscented Kalman Filter, a monocular vision-based method is established, for remotely estimatingsub-cumulus updraft parameters. Its capability of providing convergent and consistent state estimates is assessed relyingon Monte Carlo Simulations. Model uncertainties, image processing noise, and poor observer trajectories can degrade theestimated updraft parameters. Therefore, a second focus of this thesis is the design of a robust probabilistic path plannerfor map-based autonomous cross-country soaring. The proposed path planner balances between the flight time and theoutlanding risk by taking into account the estimation uncertainties in the decision making process. The suggested updraftestimation and path planning algorithms are jointly assessed in a 6 Degrees Of Freedom simulator, highlighting significantperformance improvements with respect to state of the art approaches in autonomous cross-country soaring while it is alsoshown that the path planner is implementable on a low-cost computer platform

Testo completoThis research project is dedicated to exploring the place of secrecy in psychoanalytical reflection and its relationship to issues of veiling, modesty, silence and shame. If secrecy refers to unrevealed knowledge it is essentially linked to the subconscious and should not be defined in a limited manner as simply veiled or hidden information. In this study we shall be examining the issue of lifting the veil in the modern context of searching behind the veil in order to find some "hidden truth". We shall attempt to show how the secrets thus revealed reside at the very heart of our speech, sometimes very present, but at other times completely absent, allowing themselves to be in turn understood or dissimulated and taking their place in a logical process of veiling and unveiling

Testo completoGhunghat is a veiling practice specific to North India. Its peculiarity lies in the fact that it is non religious, though it can be observed by women of all confessions, Hindu, Muslim or Sikh, but not by all women. The woman lowers the veil that rests on her head in front of certain individuals of her affines but never before her consanguines. It varies according to cast, social class, education level, places of residence in most of North India except in Punjab where it has disappeared about fifteen years ago. It gives information about the relationships that a woman has with the people around her. It reveals the social and family organization of the Nothern Indian subcontinent : arranged marriage, patrilocal residence in joint family, hierarchy, asymetry of status between wife givers and receivers. It can be seen as an extension of a woman’s body, thus informing about its representations, as well as aesthetics, and gender relations. The veil thus appears as a « total social fact » revealing the family and social relationships as well as the representations over the women’s bodies, where not only bodies but also objets are covered, especially in the context of sacredness. An ethnological study of ghunghat allows to create new tools in order to reconsider the undestanding of the veil in other contexts, in particular in the French context, through a comparative perspective

Testo completoThis thesis presents the analysis of two galactic supernova remnants in the visible spectral range: the Veil Nebula and Cassiopeia A. The observations were conducted with two wide-field imaging Fourier transform spectrometer (iFTS) : SpIOMM installed at the Observatoire du Mont-Mégantic and SITELLE recently installed at the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope. The first part of the thesis consists of a hyperspectral analysis of the Veil Nebula. With the wide field of view provided by SpIOMM (120STX120), nearly all of the filamentary structures located in the north-eastern part of the Veil have been mapped and analysed. In total, nearly 3 million spectra have been obtained covering the following emission lines : HFF, HVT, [O III] NAK NAK4959,5007, [N II] NAK NAK6548,6583 and [S II] NAK NAK6716,6731. In order to map the [O II] NAK3727+3729 lines, SITELLE has been used to observed one region in the Veil centered on NGC 6992. A few long slit spectra were also obtained covering the visible range 3624-7433 Å. The hyperspectral analysis of the Veil Nebula has allowed the creation of several ratios maps allowing to appreciate the variety and complexity of the different emission lines and their relative intensities in the observed regions. A systematic analysis of the observations using shock models evaluated by the modeling code MAPPINGS have helped to better understand the complex interaction between shocks and the circumstellar and interstellar gas around the object. The observed areas were analyzed using several diagnostic diagrams and ratios maps highlighting the different impact of several shock parameters such as the location of incomplete shock, impact velocities and electron densities. In addition, abundance maps of oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur are presented to assess the chemical composition of the remnant. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to the analysis of Cassiopeia A with SpIOMM. All the [N II] NAK NAK6548,6583 and [S II] NAK NAK6716,6731 emissions have been mapped, allowing the analysis of the nitrogen rich quasi-stationnary flocculi as well as the fast moving ejecta visible in [S II]. We used multi-epoch observations from the Hubble Space Telescope combined with data taken with SpIOMM to generate a three-dimensional spatial view of the [S II] NAK NAK6716, 6731 emissions showing their location, expansion velocity and the [S II] doublet line ratio for multiple locations in the remnant. Finally, we re-evaluate the distance to Cas A using a new method and obtained 3.33ACK0.10 kpc.

Testo completoJohn Rawls (1921-2002) has argued that principles of justice are to be chosen behind a veil of ignorance, that is, without any knowledge of one's place in society, including one's talents and one's conception of good. The present dissertation shows that grounding justice on the veil of ignorance is not only useless but problematic. Firstly, the uselessness is evidenced by the impossibility of deducing the two rawlsian principles and, more generally, of an egalitarian principle. Building on the economists' proofs, we observe that for ignorance be the premise of an argument, it is always necessary to translate the absence of belief into ab existing form of belief. Since arguments based on ignorance are indirect and useless it seems clear that one is better off working from the more solid foundation of the existing belief. Secondly, the dissertation argues that underlying intuitions of the veil of ignorance are problematic. It is shown, for instance, that viewing talents as a result of "natural lottery", is an idea barely defensible despite its intuitive appeal. It is also argued that a veil of ignorance is not sufficient to insure the fairness of the principles thus chosen

Testo completoSailing was codified in the middle of the 19th century and it experienced a certain number of changes in the last decades, the most noticeable of which being the emergence of new activities and equipment like kite surfing and sailboarding. In our analysis, competition between the promoters of the sailboard is not limited to the definition of the competitive rules to follow: it also concerns their timing for inventing, spread and institutionalise sailboard sports. It means that they impose their own timing on markets on which they want to keep a grasp, especially by controlling the supply transformation cycles. Taking into account that timing is a critical issue, this paper will describe the timing strategies in the singular world of windsurfing, and at the same time reveal the art with which people and institutions define their stances in terms of opposition between “conservatives” and “reformers. ”

Testo completoWingsail is a propulsion system substituting the conventional main soft sail on the America’s Cup and C-class catamarans. This rig is similar to a slotted-flap aeronautical wing, made by two elements divided by a slot. With respect to soft sails, the wingsail improves the performance of the yachts allowing navigating faster than the wind in both the upwind and downwind points of sail. However, the abrupt stall characteristics of the wing and its sensitiveness to the wind unsteadiness make difficult its management during the navigation. The modification of the strength of the aerodynamic forces acting on the wingsail, due to a gust or to the achievement of the stall limit, can compromise the stability of the catamaran. Thus, the wingsail has to be designed and trimmed to avoid the possibility of a capsize but, to do this, the aerodynamic envelop of the wingsail must be known. The aim of the Ph.D. project is, hence, to characterize the flow around the wingsail investigating the influence of the geometric and trim parameters on the wing performance

Testo completoFor almost three decades GPS coordinates and directions have been displayed with a top-down 2D view. At first in dedicated navigation systems, commercially used for driving, into today having GPS systems available in our everyday smartphones. The most common way to display the coordinates today are still by some sort of 2D view showing the user where it is and what roads/streets to take. This however has some problems that we believe can be solved using Augmented Reality combined with GPS. This paper sets out to answer the question if and how Augmented Reality displayed navigation can make it easier for pedestrians to navigate through a city compared to a 2D displayed navigation. In order to answer the question at hand this study presents a navigation application that combines the two technologies GPS and Augmented Reality which then is used in a user test. The results from the user tests and the questionnaire indicates that Augmented Reality based navigation is best used in scenarios where there are a lot of streets and it is hard to tell on a 2D map which street to take.
