Abstract (sommario):
Navigating large college campuses presents significant challenges for new students and visitors, especially with inadequate facilities to identify key landmarks such as administrative buildings, departments, libraries, and cafeterias. This paper proposes the development of a static location-based application for Android smartphones, featuring interactive markers and navigation functionalities to streamline campus navigation. The application allows users to locate desired destinations and receive step-by-step directions from their current location. Additionally, the inclusion of voice assistant-based search enhances user experience by enabling users to vocalize their destination, making navigation more intuitive and accessible. This solution aims to improve overall campus accessibility and convenience for students, faculty, and staff, thereby enhancing the campus experience. Abstract (sommario):
A meta-comparison of link analyses was performed using two eye scanning studies. One study was an analysis of the Etak navigator performed by Antin, Dingus, Hulse and Wierwille, (1990). Antin and his associates compared the Etak system to a paper map control condition and a memorized route baseline condition. The second study was an evaluation of the TravTek system performed by Dingus, McGehee, Hulse, Jahns, Natarajan, Mollenhauer and Fleischman (1995). The TravTek Camera Car Evaluation tested six different navigation conditions (a TravTek visual display of a full, heading-up route map with voice guidance, the same TravTek route map without voice guidance, a TravTek visual display showing a graphic representation of static turn-by-turn information, the same turn-by-turn screens without voice guidance, a textual paper direction list with large legible font, and a conventional paper map). The eye glance data shown in the comparison of these two studies revealed several interesting findings. In all conditions, scanning of instruments, mirrors and signs/ landmarks was a low frequency occurrence and largely constant. Increases in visual attention by a navigation condition draws attention from forward, left and right roadway scanning resources. Thus, navigating draws upon potentially valuable accident avoidance resources in some circumstances. The eye scanning results also shared the relative benefits of the addition of a highlighted route to a moving map display, the simplification of a visual display from a full map to a turn-by-turn graphic, and the addition of a voice supplement to a navigation aid.

Abstract (sommario):
A navigation system using a binaural bone-conducted sound is proposed. This system has three features to accurately navigate the user to the destination point. First, the selection of the bone-conduction device and the optimal contact conditions between the device and the human head are discussed. Second, the basic performance of sound localization reproduced by the selected bone-conduction device with binaural sounds is confirmed considering the head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) obtained in the air-borne sound field. Here, a panned sound technique that may emphasize the localization of the sound is also validated. Third, to ensure the safety of the navigating person, which is the most important factor in the navigation of a visually impaired person by voice guidance, an appropriate warning sound reproduced by the bone-conduction device is investigated. Finally, based on the abovementioned conditions, we conduct an auditory navigation experiment using bone-conducted guide announcement. The time required to reach the destination of the navigation route is shorter in the case with voice information including the binaural sound reproduction, as compared to the case with only voice information. Therefore, a navigation system using binaural bone-conducted sound is confirmed to be effective.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper describes the driver performance and behavioral interaction results of a comparison between visitors to a major city (Orlando) and local drivers while using differing navigation configurations of an Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS). The system utilized for the study was TravTek, a device which provided in-vehicle information via color touch screen CRT, steering wheel buttons, and synthesized voice. The TravTek driver interface was developed with the intent of providing navigation, service and attractions, and roadway incident and traffic information to the driver. Both visitors and local users tested six different navigation-aid configurations. The six navigation-aids included: static turn-by-turn graphics and a moving map both with and without voice, a paper map and a textual direction list. The research showed that visitors drove more cautiously, but they made more glances to the navigation-aids when compared to local users. In addition, visitors went off-route and got lost less frequently than local users. Visitors apparently were more careful in driving and navigating to their destinations.

Abstract (sommario):
As GPS navigation systems become more powerful, they offer the convenience of more efficient travel, and the use of such navigational aids while driving is now prevalent. Numerous issues still exist during actual use, however, such as incomprehensibility and inaccuracy of voice navigation prompts. The majority of studies have focused on humanized design and the influence on driving behavior of GPS navigation systems, while the psychological factors underlying drivers’ decisions to use them have received little attention. This study employs the extended theory of planned behavior (TPB) to investigate the psychological factors that influence drivers’ use of GPS navigation systems, including the additional variables of navigation involvement, navigation information quality, and distraction perception. Independent t-tests revealed that female, non-professional, novice, and highly educated drivers were more likely to use navigation systems. Factors analysis proved the extended TPB questionnaire to be valid and reliable. Structural equation modeling showed that attitude (0.19), subjective norms (0.14), perceived behavioral control (0.29), navigation involvement (0.36), and information quality (0.16) significantly influenced drivers’ intentions on the use of navigation. However, distraction perception (–0.05) had no significant influence. These findings demonstrate the need for navigation systems which serve drivers better. For navigation system manufacturers, the humanized design should be strengthened. For highway transportation agencies, more consistent designs for road signs are needed to improve the cooperativity between navigation and traffic signs.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Background building processses, although their unstanding entails important theoretical and social issues, remain widely ingnored. This thesis introduces a research about these processes. They were studied from a set point of view which consisted in (re)buiding the possible understanding of situations that are built on the interpretative activity dynamics during action: "interpretative learning". The field of study is based on the actual teaching activity by windsail training teachers. The methodology consisted in filming the trainees, carrying out selh-help interviews and establishing a model of their action (mainly in its interpretative side). This results in eleven interpretative learning processes, as well as their interactions and social layouts which eased or inhibited them. Philippe, Kilian. Electronic Thesis or Diss., Pau, 2022. http://www.theses.fr/2022PAUU3062.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Sailing is a physically and cognitively demanding multidisciplinary sport with sailors competing in the presence of multifaceted performance-related stressors. The high level of stress sailors face during training and competition ignites the necessity for a better understanding of the dose-response relationship related to sailing work-load (WL). Indeed, WL monitoring of sailors must be practised extensively to; a) adapt the training schedule, b) provide the skipper with valuable information on potential risks of injury and overtraining, and c) ensure adequate recovery program-ming to enhance performance. Hence, quantifying the WL in professional sailors in-volves multiple aspects to properly investigate the training and competition dose-response relationship. Historically, monitoring WL in elite sports environments has been based on the theoretical “general adaptive syndrome” model, whereby performance can be predicted through variables of fitness and fatigue over acute and chronic mathematical systems. However, offshore sailing has received limited inter-est concerning WL and its’ effects on morphological, physical, and physiological ad-aptations. Furthermore, the scarcity of data in such unexplored environments makes it a strenuous task for human performance practitioners aiming at planning and structuring efficient training interventions. This thesis contains three studies that aim to build a novel conceptual model of WL analysis by identifying valid and reliable monitoring assessments that relate to competition performance in professional offshore sailing. Study One attempted to overcome the common misconception that sailing is considered a “light” exercise (Bernardi et al., 1990) by proving that sailing performance is linked to fitness pro-files. The findings identified multiple physical variables able to discriminate be-tween successful- and less-successful sailors. Indeed, successful sailors were charac-terised by stronger handgrip, more powerful bench pull, and stronger isometric mid-thigh pull. Study Two observed and described the distribution of WL throughout a pre-competition period. Furthermore, it intended the identification of data smooth-ing mathematical models capable of predicting the effects of WL on neuromuscular performance, well-being, and salivary cortisol (SC). The results highlighted the com-plexity of managing high and variant WLs throughout a season. Significant associa-tions were also established between WL parameters and markers of subjective and objective fatigue. Moreover, monitoring tools were identified as valid and reliable methods for monitoring the preparedness of an offshore sailing crew. Hence some variables can be integrated into the monitoring systems used by human performance practitioners to enhance the efficiency of human resources. Data smoothing models, commonly used for analysing acute to chronic (acute : chronic) ratios, were found to be intuitive predictors of performance. Study Three explored the issue of understand-ing the effects of competition on the ‘fitness-fatigue’ model. It documented the char-acteristics of the race, described the physiological responses to competition, and ex-amined neurophysiological and psychological fatigue patterns. These findings can greatly assist strength and conditioning and nutritionists alike in elaborating adapted interventions capable of enhancing athletic and sailing performance

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractFor people with visual impairment, smartphone apps that use computer vision techniques to provide visual information have played important roles in supporting their daily lives. However, they can be used under a specific condition only. That is, only when the user knows where the object of interest is. In this paper, we first point out the fact mentioned above by categorizing the tasks that obtain visual information using computer vision techniques. Then, in looking for something as a representative task in a category, we argue suitable camera systems and rotation navigation methods. In the latter, we propose novel voice navigation methods. As a result of a user study comprised of seven people with visual impairment, we found that (1) a camera with a wide field of view such as an omnidirectional camera was preferred, and (2) users have different preferences in navigation methods.

Abstract (sommario):
This study aimed to assess the impact of interacting with two infotainment systems, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, on four driver performance measures: reaction time, driving behaviour, eyes-off road and self-reported performance. It also compared the results with other forms of driver impairment studied previously. Twenty regular Android users took part in the Android Auto trial and 20 regular Apple users took part in the Apple CarPlay trial. Each participant completed three 20 minute drives in TRL’s DigiCar simulator: control (no interaction with infotainment system), voice enabled and touch enabled. The route was divided into sections and participants performed music, navigation, texting and calling tasks at specific times during the drive. Compared with the control drive, participants in both trials showed a reduction in average speed, increase in deviation of headway and larger deviation of lane position for most tasks; this effect was greater when using touch features than voice features. Eye gaze measures indicated that participants did not meet the NHTSA criteria for most of the tasks when using touch controls for both systems, but they met the criteria when using voice control. Self-reported data suggested that participants found interacting through touch to be more difficult and distracting than voice. Most critically, reaction time to a stimulus on the road ahead was significantly higher when selecting music through Spotify when using Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Participants also failed to react more to the stimulus on the road ahead when engaging with either Android Auto or Apple CarPlay compared with a control drive. Comparison with previous driver impairment studies showed that the increase in reaction time when interacting with either system using touch was higher than previously measured forms of impairment, including texting and hand-held calls.
