Abstract (sommario):
Archives, libraries and museums have for some time been trying out the advantages, for themselves and for each other, of working together and sharing long-term aims. These independent sorties were given a coercive impetus in April 2000 when the Government-funded Library & Information Commission and the Museums & Galleries Commission were replaced by the single-word Resource, to bring together ‘strategic advocacy, leadership and advice to enable museums, archives and libraries to touch people’s lives and inspire their imagination, learning and creativity’. At the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Art Library, which already included the Museum’s Archives, has recently merged with Prints, Drawings and Paintings to form the Word & Image Department. The integration of the National Art Library with a department that has traditionally put greater emphasis on its curatorial role has suggested new paths of development for us all and, in particular, an enhanced contribution for the new Department across the full range of material culture as represented in the V&A’s collections. Thus the merger has acted as a catalyst to put into practice aspects of the Government’s agenda within a single institution. This article outlines some of the developments proposed for the Word & Image Department, with particular emphasis on implications for the National Art Library, its staff, collections and users.

Abstract (sommario):
The ideal of a single, national art library is no more practicable than that of a single national library. The alternative is to regard all of a nation’s art libraries as comprising the national art library, taking advantage of their diversity and of their provision of a range of access points and policies. This requires effective co-ordination, preferably combining maximum co-operation with a minimum of centralisation, and including the rotation of specific responsibilities among participating libraries. An example of such a confederation of art libraries is represented by the network of art libraries within the Research Libraries Group (RLG) in the USA. A new RLG plan for achieving efficient co-operative cataloguing of exhibition catalogues demonstrates how a confederation of libraries can work together to act as a national art library, more effectively than would be possible for a single ‘monolithic’ library.

The National Art Library at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London has always seen itself as primarily an educational institution, with training as an integral part of its fabric. There are two fundamental strands to this training the provision of training by our librarians to the users, and the training the staff receive in order to develop and better perform their jobs.

Abstract (sommario):
From its beginnings in 1836 as the library of the Government School of Design, the National Art Library (NAL) in the UK was intended to have an impact on design in the country. After the Great Exhibition of 1851 it former part of what was to become known as the Victoria and Albert Museum (V & A). By the 1850s it had already adopted the title of National Art Library, although it was called the V & A Museum Library between 1908 and 1985. By 1853 collections aimed to cover the arts and trades comprehensively, and by 1869 the NAL aimed also at comprehensive access to individual objects created in the course of history. By 1852, the library was open to all, although a charge was made at first. Various forms of subject indexing have been used; from 1877 to 1895 subject lists were prepared for internal use and sold to the public, and from 1869 to 1889 a remarkable Universal catalogue of books on art was produced. The present mission statement of the NAL focuses on collecting, documenting and making available information on the history and practice of art, craft and design, and the library aims its services at both the national and international community. However, its great 19th century contribution to published subject control of art materials has been almost completely absent in the 20th century. During 1994 the NAL will contribute records to the British Library (BL) Conspectus database, though there is little formal cooperation between the two libraries. As a specialist library it can organize its collections and index them in ways that are impossible for a comprehensive library such as the BL, and it therefore has an important part to play in the national library scene.

Abstract (sommario):
The Library of the Victoria and Albert Museum originated in the mid-19th century as the library of a School of Design, and adopted the title ‘The National Art Library’ later in the century following publication of the Universal Catalogue of Books on Art. Decades of steady growth and of low usage ended in the late 1960s, when sudden growth of art publishing, and of interest in art history, generated demands the Library was not equipped to meet. The Library possesses one of the world’s outstanding collections of art publications but is still funded, staffed, and administered as if its role was merely that of a Department of the Museum. Currently all aspects of the Library’s procedures and policies are under review; government funding is to be sought for a programme of computerisation, and it is hoped to redefine the Library’s role in national and international contexts and to re-establish it as the ‘heart and core’ of art library provision in the U.K., as an active participant in cooperative schemes and projects, and as a training centre for art librarianship, or in other words, as an active and truly national art library.

Abstract (sommario):
The National Art Library, at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, seeks to fulfil its national role by becoming the focal point of a wider network of libraries. In order to support this role, and to carry it forward into the 1990s, the Library has redesigned its management structure, developed a role as a training library for the art library profession, and applied a professional approach, involving the collection and consideration of management data, to the Library’s administration. Collection development has been redefined, shifting the emphasis from the past to the present; this has resulted in an increased intake of material, in spite of a frozen budget, with a consequent need for more space which will be provided through a reorganisation of the Library’s existing accommodation. A plan for the conservation of items in the Library’s collections is being devised. Automation, installed in 1990, brings with it further possibilities and the critical question of whether to prioritise the development of the collections or the development of access to the collections.

Abstract (sommario):
Britain’s National Art Library at the Victoria & Albert Museum joined the OCLC network in 1986, and from 1987 to 1990 created catalogue records in MARC format on the OCLC database pending the introduction of a stand-alone computer system. The Library now employs a Dynix minicomputer system for cataloguing, acquisitions, circulation, serials control, and the provisions of OPACs. About 15% of the Library’s records are available online. Retrospective conversion of older records is proceeding and may be completed by the year 2000. The online catalogue is networked internally within the Museum, and is likely to be accessible to external users via JANET in the future. A number of bibliographic and image databases are also provided in CD-ROM and videodisc format. Future developments will include interface between Museum/image and Library/documentation databases.

ARLIS’s awareness of its national role and the necessity for a nationwide response to the needs of art library resources found expression in the work and research activities of the Committee for the National Co-ordination of Art Library Resources. The Committee first established itself as an influential voice in the debate on the National Art Library in the late 1970s and early 80s and later in discussions with the British Library which led in due course to the setting up of the BL Standing Committee on Art Documentation. An initiator of some of ARLIS’s major publications (the Union List of Art Periodicals; Art & Design Documentation: a Directory of Resources), the Committee has also seen notable success in the work of the Exhibition Catalogue project and more recently in the Visual Arts Library & Information Plan (VALIP).

Abstract (sommario):
Typically, museums are seen as the primary venue for exhibitions. However, an interest in library exhibitions has been growing as indicated by increased literature in the library field, albeit with a large focus on academic libraries. On a broader scale, library exhibitions continue to be under-researched as indicated by the continuing lack of library exhibition evaluation standards, library exhibition reviews, and exhibition-related professional training for librarians. In this 2021 study, interviews were conducted at eight Washington, DC-based art museum libraries: The National Gallery of Art, The National Museum of Women in the Arts, The American Art and Portrait Gallery, The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, The National Museum of African Art, The Phillips Collection, and the George Washington University Textile Museum. This paper is an examination of the current state of exhibitions in art museum libraries and aims to establish a set of best practices to help foster the production of art museum library exhibitions.

COCAJ, RILIND. "Between Neo-Avant-Garde Art and Biourbanism. Andrija Mutnjaković: National Library of Kosovo". Doctoral thesis, Università IUAV di Venezia, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/11578/319403.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The building of the National Library of Kosovo in Pristina by the Croatian architect and theoretician Andrija Mutnjaković was conceived in 1971 and its project is based on compositional principles that reflect cultural trends and movements active in Yugoslavia in the 60s and 70s that have had intense ties and relations with the European and international debate of those years such as: the “Neo-Avant-Garde in the visual arts” in Zagreb, “Biourbanism” and those currents ascribable to Reyner Banham’s book “Megastructure”. Firstly, the National Library of Kosovo was evaluated as a “Neo-Avant-Garde artistic expression”. It must be noted that Mutnjaković himself was a participant and observer of Neo-Avant-Garde culture in Zagreb since the end of the 1950s. His early works directly reflect the compositional principles of this culture such as the projects for Novi Beograd (Biocity for Belgrade, New Belgrade, 1965), Tel Aviv (Tel Aviv City Center 1963), Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh City Center, 1964). The series of study sketches for the Library proceeds by defining the layout and profile of the building by adopting different principles of the “Neo-Avant-Garde”, more precisely the Enformel and New Tendencies within the context of visual arts: the open form in continuous evolution through the automatic (computer) development of “informal geometric textures”. Secondly, the National Library of Kosovo is analysed as a “biourbanistic center” or a “megastructure”: the unrealized project of the university campus - of which the only built object is the library, clearly follows the principle of “Biourbanism”, a theoretical work by Andrija Mutnjaković (1982). The campus is modeled according to a “natural” design with a tendency toward openness and spontaneous growth. The “biourbanist” ideal is present in the aspiration for a dynamic equilibrium between society and untouched nature. The urban structure is presented as an aggregate of relationships between all the elements that define the specific socio-economic circumstances. Mutnjaković aims to create the campus as a city – an organism of mutually “interconnected” spaces with a free composition organically integrated into the landscape, consisting of “biological urban units”. With the avant-garde movements of the 1960s, the concept of megastructure was proposed and practiced mainly in the academic field where Banham has nevertheless identified some projects as the expression of a “megastructural” idea, consisting of interconnected modular buildings and environments oriented towards almost exclusive pedestrian traffic. Referring to this matter, as part of Mutnjaković’s biourbanist projects, the entire master plan of the university campus in Pristina is an organic “megastructure” with the National Library of Kosovo as its “nucleus” in the biological sense of the term. Thirdly, the National Library as the center of the ideal city where Mutnjaković analyzes the Ducal Palace of Urbino and the Diocletian’s Palace to furtherly understand the idea and approach behind their ideal city. The National Library project acts as a research idea of regional architecture as a basis for the creation of contemporary architecture, and that through architecture one could somehow show the user’s identity and create a previously nonexistent form. An idea of the city represented in a single building; a palace in the form of a city. Concentrating on the National Library of Kosovo as Neo-Avant-Garde, a megastructure, a biourbanistic center, and a center of an ideal city, this thesis deepens the knowledge of the compositional principles and the authentic approach developed by Andrija Mutnjaković in this internationally often neglected but original and highly creative seminal Yugoslav work.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis presents the research undertaken to develop a prototype digital resource to display a fine art collection at the National Library of Wales. The thesis first presents art historical investigations into the work of Kyffin Williams: the work of Kyffin Williams and his relationship with the National Library of Wales; the artist?s position within the canon of Welsh art history; and how ideas around space, place and landscape can contribute towards a fresh understanding of the artist?s work. This art historical inquiry is then used to develop a digital resource, called Kyffin Williams Online, to display the digitised Sir Kyffin Williams Bequest Collection of the National Library of Wales. The thesis addresses the incongruity of a large art collection being held in a library rather than museum or gallery and the restrictions of using reproductions of works of art. These restrictions are acknowledged and used to provide ways in which digitised works of art can be used for research for their own sake, rather than only as facsimiles or reproductions. This has been achieved by using the focus on space, place and landscape in the art historical investigation has been used to develop a geo-spatial presentation of content which is relevant to the art collections of the National Library. The thesis closes by using the resultant digital resource to show examples of how these methods can be used to further art historical investigation, and how the knowledge, expertise and methods used can be transferred to the National Library in its work with digitised collections.

Abstract (sommario):
The present study attempted to investigate the usage of libraries by overseas students. The research was carried out in two universities in the ACT, namely, the Australian National University (ANU) and the University of Canberra (UC). The study investigated two main aspects: the use of institutional as well as other libraries in the ACT, and the difficulties encountered in utilising institutional libraries. These two aspects were also treated as the dependent variables. Relationships between these two dependent variables and the following characteristics, which were regarded as the independent variables, were tested: the institution attended (ANU or UC), having had library orientation in the institution attended, previous use of libraries, mediums of instructions in previous educational institutions, level of study, year of study, period of time spent in Australia, gender, and age. The research used survey methodology. A questionnaire was sent to a sample of 521 overseas students and a response rate of 72 percent was obtained. With regard to the use of institutional libraries, it was found that most students visited their libraries more than once a week. The three most used library facilities were borrowing books, use of library staff for assistance and the short loan service, while the three least used facilities were inhouse information sheets, abstracts and indexes, and CD-ROM databases. The three most used libraries in the ACT in descending order were the ANU library system, the National library of Australia, and the University of Canberra library. Difficulties encountered in utilising institutional libraries included difficulty in utilising library facilities, difficulty with library rules and regulations, difficulty in looking for required materials in the libraries, unsuccessful library visits, difficulties as a result of English being a second language, difficulty following the layout of the libraries and perception of the libraries' atmosphere. Relationships were found between some of the independent variables and the dependent variables. In some cases, the findings were expected while in other cases they were unexpected. With the unexpected findings, it is possible that one or more independent variables, other than the ones under consideration, influenced the findings thus leading to surprising results. The study concludes with recommendations and suggestions for further research.

Abstract (sommario):
This diploma thesis is focused on the automatization of digitization workflow in the National Library of Technology, Prague, Czech Republic. This thesis examines possibilities of digitization processes automatization by means of scripts written in Perl programming language and Apache Ant build tool. The advantages and disadvantages of both solutions are analyzed as well as their suitability for automatization of digitization workflow. Based on the comparison of both solutions, the scripts in Perl programming language are selected as the most suitable solution for automatization of digitization workflow. The question whether Ant build tool could be used for the purpose of automatization of digitization workflow is also answered in this thesis. The Ant build tool could be used for the above-mentioned purpose. However, once the activities in the given process divert from the general scope of tasks provided by the Ant build tool, the complexity of the whole solution increases rapidly. This complexity is given by the necessity to use predefined tasks -- sets of functions which have to be combined to create a functional automatization script. Even though Ant is an extendable tool, it is necessary to understand the Java programming language in order to create a new Ant task successfully. On the other hand, the Perl programming language allows easier customization of the script for the purposes of automatization of digitization workflow. Also, the modularity of the Perl programming language makes it easier to create those scripts and modify, correct or develop them even further.

Alfarhoud, Yousef T. "Influence of Social Media on Decision Making of the Kuwait National Assembly Members: Case Study". Thesis, University of North Texas, 2018. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1404618/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In Kuwait, an increase in the use of social media by the Kuwait National Assembly (KNA) has allowed it members to reach out to the public and so advance their political agenda. This study examines social media influences on the decision making process; addresses the lack of academic research in relation to KNA members; and seeks to understand the extent to which public political engagement using social media might affect the outcome of their decision making. The proposed social media influence model (SMIM) was used to explore the relationships and relative importance of variables influencing legislator decision making in a social media environment. The second decade of the twenty-first century saw a number of major issues emerging in Kuwait. A core mixed method design known as explanatory sequential was applied to multiple sets of data generated during KNA members' 14th (2013-2016) and 15th (2016-2018) terms. These data included Twitter messages (tweets), the KNA Information Center Parliamentary Information System legislation documents, and the news media articles. The sample was drawn from KNA membership, some of which used Twitter to comment on major events with specific hashtags and the Kuwaiti news media articles related to the same. Study results confirm and support the proposed SMIM. They also suggest that a single person or a group of individuals (in this case, legislators) can be influenced and motivated to use social media for self-promotion and/or advancing their political agenda. Consequently, they can be used to devise ways for improving the use of social media by KNA members in support of legislative work, which in turn will provide citizens with access to real-time information and enhanced political interaction.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe case studies give the narratives of where the projects came from, how decisions were made, including, for example, how lack of financial safeguarding and corruption led to problems. The narratives “bring the statistical analysis to life” and give the reader an impression (relatively succinctly in about five pages per case) of what the project problems “feel” like. This chapter discusses the first matched project pair, the Abuja National Library and the Obasanjo Presidential Library. The national library project suffered from design changes, budget cuts (because of unstable funding) and conflicts with the contractor, and it is an unfinished ruin today. The Obasanjo Presidential Library was privately funded, had a clear goal and ambition, and was completed close to schedule in spite of setbacks (although it was far over budget and has an uncertain financial future). The two case studies contrast project environments that can cause different project paths.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The National Gallery was regularly faulted, not only for flaws in the design of the building it shared with the Royal Academy until 1868, but for gaps in its collection and errors in the accession and preservation of its holdings. The British Museum, while seldom subjected to the vitriol that characterized accounts of the Gallery, challenged administrators and visitors by the sheer size and heterogeneity of its collection. At once museum of antiquities, copyright library, and repository of collections of natural history, numismatics, and more—how was such a diverse accumulation of materials to be rationalized so that it carried out the function of a modern cultural institution, especially given the pressure on the space of the building bound to result from the inexorable increase in all holdings?

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter, by Nathaniel Brennan, discusses the efforts of the Museum of Modern Art Film Library to make use of captured enemy motion pictures on behalf of the federal government’s wartime intelligence programs during World War II. While the chapter presents an overview of the film library’s governmental intelligence work, ranging from matters of storage to the challenges of training analysts, the central case study examines the work of British anthropologist Gregory Bateson, whose work at the film library consisted of trying to define an objective approach to the study of culture through cinema and the preparation of a test film that would instruct American soldiers about the peculiarities of the German character. Although Bateson’s plans did not materialize, the efforts of Margaret Mead to adapt Bateson’s anthropological film methodology for the Cold War nonetheless influenced the development of postwar film studies and the analysis of national cinemas.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract “Great Day” after “The Long Night,” in Ann DuCille’s words (1995: 23), refers to Fall 1993 when, after a long period of dearth and endurance, the novelist Toni Morrison won the Nobel Prize in Literature and her Ohio compatriot, Rita Dove, was installed as poet laureate of the United States. Both authors had previously won Pulitzer Prizes: Dove in 1987 for Thomas and Beulah (1986) and Morrison in 1988 for Beloved (1987). These prestigious awards and posts marked momentous events of empowerment in American letters, for the two recipients were not only female but African American as well. It was a time of great communal significance, of personal and public, national, racial, and engendered honor. “Rooms of Their Own: Toni Morrison, Rita Dove” was the title of Paul Gray and Jack E. White’s accolade in Time 18 (Oct. 1993: 86–89). Crossing Color is meant as a critical inquiry into the transcultural spacings and spatiotemporal relations of Dove’s oeuvre from the beginning of her career in the late 1970s into the late 1990s. This first book-length study on her work addresses academics as well as the wide audience she was able to reach during her successful two years as the Library of Congress Consultant in Poetry (1993–1995).

Abstract (sommario):
The U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) exhibition known as Native Voices reflected Donald A.B. Lindberg M.D.’s keen and long-held desire to help improve public understanding of Native American health challenges and honor the culture, tradition, and healing ways of Native Peoples. A centerpiece of the exhibition was a large set of video interviews that Dr. Lindberg conducted with Native health and community leaders. Dr. Lindberg and his team engaged Native advisors in the exhibition development; sought Native input through Listening Circles, Tribal Consultations; and site visits, and made the video interviews accessible via interactive kiosks and iPads. For its time, this was state-of-the-art exhibition technology. The exhibition also included Native artifacts and art works to complement the videos, including a scale model of the iconic Hokule’a Native Hawaiian voyaging canoe, and a full-size Lummi Indian Healing Totem Pole. The totem journeyed across the U.S. prior to its installation next to the NLM herbal garden in Bethesda, MD. A traveling version of the exhibition visited more than 130 venues in 40 States across the U.S. The interview clips and other content are accessible on the exhibition website, and the full-length interviews are retained in the NLM permanent video collection.

Abstract (sommario):
If you are standing on the shores of the Ottawa River looking at the Canadian Museum of History, the national library and archives and other national repositories of Aboriginal heritage, you might well despair at the comprehensive losses of curatorial expertise, programs of research, and will to work collaboratively with Aboriginal people which befell these institutions under the government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Looking harder, however, neither the shifting political ideologies nor the era of financial constraint that began with the global financial crisis of 2008 seems to have thrown processes of decolonisation and pluralist representation that began to take root in Canada during the 1990s into reverse. Two exhibition projects that unfolded during that same period provide evidence of that the changes in historical consciousness of settler-indigenous relationships and the acceptance of cultural pluralism have provided a counterweight to the intentions of a right wing government to restore old historical narratives. This chapter discusses them as evidence of this deep and, seemingly, irreversible shift in Canadian public’s expectation s of museum representation. The first involves plans for the new exhibition of Canadian history being developed for the 150th anniversary of Canadian confederation in 2017, specifically a fishing boat named the Nisga’a Girl which was presented by a west coast First Nation to mark the successful resolution of its land claim. The second is the Sakahan exhibition of global indigenous art shown in 2013 at the National Gallery of Canada and which marked a notable departure from its past scope. While utopia has by no means been achieved, neither, surprisingly, was dystopia realised during the years of conservative reaction.

Abstract (sommario):
The article talks about the oldest East Slavic dated manuscript: the Ostromir Gospel 1056–57. It takes its name from the Novgorod mayor Ostromir, a trusted associate of the Kievan Prince, who appointed him to manage the city. It is most likely that Ostromir presented this splendid gospel at the newly built cathedral of St. Sophia, the main church of northwest Rus’. This precious manuscript had a colourful fate: in addition to Novgorod, it was at various times kept in Moscow and St. Petersburg, in possession of Russian emperors and empresses until it was transferred in the early 19th century to library storage and is now located in the Russian National Library of St. Petersburg. The Ostromir Gospel serves as an excellent model for studying the written literary language of Old Rus’, Slavo-Russian paleography and the art of illuminated manuscripts, in particular their initials, borders and miniatures. The distant protograph of Ostromir Gospel may have been one of the Bulgarian manuscripts from Great Preslav, the capital of Bulgaria at the end of the 9th — 10th centuries.

Abstract (sommario):
In 2020/21, the collaborative distributed Hungarian library platform will be completed and introduced, revolutionizing library services with state-of-the-art IT solutions. The Hungarian National Library Platform (HNLP) puts the national library services, the common catalog and interlibrary loan, the services of the ISBN office, the digitization cooperation on a new foundation, and integrates the Hungarian National Namespace and opens up entity-based data connections beyond the library world. It expands the range of services provided to readers, providing legitimate digital content to both library visitors and remotely logged in online users. It provides modern interfaces for publishers and authors to expand the range of information about their publications with relevant data. It is open to libraries to replace, in part or in full, their existing IT solutions and, moving into the cloud-based system, use it as their own integrated library platform. The parameterdriven HNLP allows connected libraries to create a unique brand image, deliver their collections in the most diverse way, while becoming an integral part of an entity-based data model-based metadata repository and digital object repository. The collaboration between libraries, which began in 2016 with the design of the new platform, has now entered a new phase: our partners review the specifications, the libraries provide their data for the developed modules, test the system elements, and then the entire platform in an integrated way. The first module of the HNLP, the “old and rare books” module, was launched in October 2019, followed by the launch of the Library Science Library in 2020, and in 2021 the operation of the National Széchényi Library in this modern environment will follow. What are the main pillars of this platform? What secures the required flexibility? What makes it capable of accommodating any type of metadata and serving any type of library? How can all types of libraries be connected, small and large libraries, university and church, public and private libraries alike? How is the system open to the processing of archival and museum materials? What has been achieved so far and what are the next steps until the full transition?

Abstract (sommario):
An essential goal of library informatics is to create open-source systems through community collaboration. Primary examples of open solution Integrated Library Systems, such as KOHA, Evergreen, or the Open Library Environment (Kuali OLE), have been born out of this notion. Since 2016, the librarian and developer professional communities have been working together to take this framework to a higher level. Building on learnings from prior system developments, a new modular, micro-service based platform was created. The platform was named FOLIO, short for ’The Future of Libraries is Open’, to reflect its open and flexible nature. Today, FOLIO platform and its relevant modules are widely used by a number of medium-sized and national libraries (e.g. the Italian National Library in Florence). The objectives of the Hungarian National Library Platform (HNLP) development, launched in 2016, are very much in alignment with the above: to re-conceptualise services offered by national libraries, to explore new ways of collaboration, to revolutionise common catalogue and interlibrary loan, and to make entity-based data connections available beyond the world outside libraries through integration to the Hungarian National Namespace. And first and foremost, to offer the most advanced services and state-of-the-art IT technology to library users. The National Széchényi Library Hungary has been part of the FOLIO community since its inception, to have a stake in its strategic direction and to benefit from the developments taking place internationally. Our long-term vision is to enable seamless module compatibility between the two systems so that libraries can use a flexible configuration that best serves their needs. The main pillars of the development are identical for both FOLIO and HNLP: (i) an entity-based data model, (ii) the creation of a meaning-based integrated architecture through modularity for any number of institutions and any institutional hierarchy, and (iii) the free configurability of workflows across the system / flexible workflow design. Where are HNLP, FOLIO and ReShare, the major collaborative module for interlibrary loan of the latter on this path right now? What solutions are provided for the basic pillars, and what objectives are still to be achieved?

Abstract (sommario):
In a flourishing knowledge society, the communication of information is rapidly changing and, at the level of academic library this is possible through electronic services and digital collection. The informational growth in all the expertise fields, especially in science and culture, its coding in digital form, is a reflection of deep transformations in innovation at national scale and also worldwide. The mix of technology with print culture and science helps the heritage preservation and also provide open access to the scientific community. Digitization of library collections transforms the teaching, learning, researching and moreover the manner in which people interact. The present paper is an insight over the concept of digital library, its evolution and especially its standpoints. Our approach intends to explore and reveal the reasons behind the digitization and also the effects and improvements on the community of library users. We aim to investigate the state of the art of digitization at global scale, the way it is reflected in the official documents, the evolution and barriers of this process in Romania, and the possible measures that must be taken for the future. "CAROL I" Central University Library reshaped its mission and objectives and designed the plan for e-services development in the digital economy age. Considering that Romania still lacks a coherent programme for digitization and the fact that open access is the fundamental right of individuals, we intend to outline the arguments for this process to be included in the public policies, as a measure for sustainable development. Only when knowledge will be provided trough hybrid services we will be able to speak about a modern management based on flexibility, adaptability, creativity in line with the evolution of communication and technological changes.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract MFiX is a multiphase open-source suite that is developed at the National Energy Technology Laboratories. It is widely used by fossil fuel reactor communities to simulate flow in a fluidized bed reactor. It does not have advanced linear iterative solvers even though it spends 70% of the run time in solving the linear system. Trilinos contains algorithms and enabling technologies for the solution of large-scale, sophisticated multi-physics engineering and scientific problems. The library developed at Sandia National Laboratories has more than 60 packages. It consists of state-of-the-art preconditioners, nonlinear solvers, direct solvers, and iterative solvers. The packages are performant and portable on various hybrid computing architectures. To improve the capabilities of MFiX, we developed a framework, MFiX-Trilinos, to integrate the advanced linear solvers in Trilinos with the FORTRAN based multiphase flow solver, MFiX. The framework changes the semantics of the array in FORTRAN and C++ and solve the linear system with packages in Trilinos and returns the solution to MFiX. The preconditioned iterative solvers considered for the analysis are BiCGStab and GMRES. The framework is verified on various fluidized bed problems. The performance of the framework is tested on the Stampede supercomputer. The wall time for multiple sizes of fluidized beds is compared.

Abstract (sommario):
A recurring annual international event for library information science professionals, the Semantic Web in Libraries (SWIB) conference is a showcase for the latest innovations in linked data and semantic web applications. A regular feature of this conference is the tutorial on the Annif automated subject indexing tool, to which the National Széchényi Library’s Office for GLAM Standards has had the opportunity to delegate a member. Developed by the National Library of Finland, the open source Annif has quickly become one of the flagship for artificial intelligence solutions in libraries. It is already used on routine basis in Finland, more and more libraries are adapting the system, primary in Europe. The secret of its success is both the open source nature of the Annif and the flexibility to integrate with existing components, such as various vocabularies and natural language processing (NLP) algorithms and other AI developments. The Annif therefore is a very useful tool that can significantly facilitate and even revolutionize content discovery, but the key to successful adaptation is the conscious preparation for this task by the library system. It is not only to provide the technical requirements and standardized indexing and cataloging, but also a paradigm shift is needed to enable the current Hungarian library system to adapt such an innovative solution, which brings a new approach to librarians everyday professional life in Hungary. In my paper, summarizing the experiences of the SWIB workshop, I explore these issues and summarize the basic features of the Annif.

Abstract (sommario):
This document describes the repackaging and linkage of the Sandia National Laboratories Environmental Fluid Dynamics Sediment Processes Code (SNL-EFDC-SEDZLJ), (Thanh et al. 2008). It was originally incorporated within a modified version of the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (USEPA) EFDC public-domain surface-water flow, sediment transport, and water-quality model developed by John Hamrick (Hamrick 1992) and its linkage to the ERDC-CHL-CMS hydrodynamic model. SNL-EFDC simulates flow and transport of sediment as bedload and suspended load. SNL-EFDC-SEDZLJ improves EFDC with updated sediment kinetics subroutines. Sediment erosion is calculated using data collected with a Sediment Erosion at Depth flume (SEDflume). SEDflume measures erosion rates as a function of shear stress and depth from relatively undisturbed cores taken directly from the sediment bed below the water body of interest. The use of SEDflume data provides more accurate sediment erosion rates that are directly input to the model.

Abstract (sommario):
Review question / Objective: Currently, pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with ILM peeling is the gold standard treatment for full thickness macular hole (FTMH). Despite of the high macular hole closure rate, a refractory FTMH may occur. The next step for a recurrent or persistent MH is usually repeat PPV with extended ILM peeling. This is not always an option especially with high myopia patients or those who had already undergone an aggressive ILM peeling at initial surgery. A variety of novel techniques have been developed to address this issue, among which human amniotic membrane seems to be a promising adjuvant. However, there are still uncertainties regarding the integration and the long-term effects of of the graft. Abstract (sommario):
One of the leading Western Ukrainian diaspora journals – London «Liberation Way», founded in January 1949, has become the subject of the study for the first time in journalism. Archival documents and materials of the Ukrainian Publishing Union in London and the British National Library (British Library) were also observed. The peculiarities of the magazine’s formation and the specifics of the editorial policy, founders and publishers are clarified. A group of OUN members who survived Hitler’s concentration camps and ended up in Great Britain after the end of World War II initiated the foundation of the magazine. Until April 1951, including issue 42, the Board of Foreign Parts of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists were the publishers of the magazine. From 1951 to the beginning of 2000 it was a socio-political monthly of the Ukrainian Publishing Union. From the mid-60’s of the twentieth century – a socio-political and scientific-literary monthly. In analyzing the programmatic principles of the magazine, the most acute issues of the Ukrainian national liberation movement, which have long separated the forces of Ukrainian emigration and from which the founders and publishers of the magazine from the beginning had clearly defined positions, namely: ideology of Ukrainian nationalism, the idea of unity of Ukraine and Ukrainians, internal inter-party struggle among Ukrainian emigrants have been singled out. The review and systematization of the thematic palette of the magazine’s publications makes it possible to distinguish the following main semantic accents: the formation of the nationalist movement in exile; historical Ukrainian themes; the situation in sub-Soviet Ukraine; the problem of the unity of Ukrainians in the Western diaspora; mission and tasks of Ukrainian emigration in the context of its responsibilities to the Motherland. It also particularizes the peculiarities of the formation of the author’s assets of the magazine and its place in the history of Ukrainian national journalism.
