Abstract (sommario):
In this paper we explore links among firms’ performance, firms’ alliance strategies, and national culture in the context of the global information and communication technologies (ICT) industry. Currently, partnering is the one of the most effective ways to access a broad set of resources. In the ICT industry, we can observe a significant number of alliances, networks, and mergers and acquisitions. The contribution of this paper is to investigate how a contextual factor – namely, national culture – influences the alliance portfolio formation and a firm’s performance. We also aim to contribute to the issue of alliance portfolio formation. First, the concepts of alliance portfolio and culture as an explanatory factor are elaborated upon and their relevance to the study discussed. Second, using a sample of 30 ICT leaders and 10,247 of their alliances, we explore the effect of alliance strategy on firms’ performance as well as the connections among culture, firms’ performance, and alliance strategy. The study confirms that, in a global ICT industry (i.e., the most dynamically changing and riskiest environment), weak alliances may increase a firm’s performance more than strong, traditional strategic alliances. Culture may be used as one of the explanatory factors affecting firms’ performance as well as firms’ alliance strategies. Reference to this paper should be made as follows: Golonka, M.; Rzadca, R. 2013. Does a connection exist among national culture, alliance strategy, and leading ICT firms’ performance?, Journal of Business Economics and Management 14(Supplement 1): S395–S412.

Abstract (sommario):
The first phase of a three-year research project was undertaken in 1994. This involved a national survey of NHS health promotion units to determine the healthy alliances they had in place with the education sector. Questionnaires were sent to all specialist NHS health promotion units in England and a 64 per cent response rate was achieved. The aim of the survey was to discover the specialist health promoters' perceptions of the extent, purpose and nature of healthy alliances between the two sectors, and the factors they felt had facilitated and/or constrained the establishment of such alliances. Variables included the size and type of unit, the existence of coterminous boundaries and the health promotion approaches adopted. The results demonstrate that health promotion specialists are extremely active in both the initiation and management of collaborative initiatives, with 98 per cent of health promotion units having alliances in place with the education sector. The most common type of alliance is one established with a single LEA, although the majority of units had more than one type of alliance in place with education at the time of the audit. The education sector was said to play a less active role in alliance maintenance. Health promoters were concerned about the substantial change to educational funding. This was seen as a major setback for alliance working, particularly the impact this change has had on the role of local authority advisory staff. These results will be used to establish the second phase of the study, which will involve a national survey of health education advisors.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper aims to highlight the relationship between cultural differences and the performance of non-equity alliances in the hotel sector with reference to a developing country. The paper employs an empirical investigation based on quantitative analysis. Data were gathered through questionnaires obtained from Tunisian hotels involved in 78 non-equity alliances with foreign partners. The partial least squares (PLS) technique was used to estimate the model. Results reveal that national and organizational cultural differences have a negative impact on alliance performance in this sector. The likelihood of alliance decay is then strengthened. However, national cultural differences do not moderate the relationship between organizational cultural differences and alliance performance. The corporate culture of these hotels could somehow be impervious to local culture. This paper helps fill the void of empirical evidence of the impact of both levels of culture on the performance of non-equity alliances in the hotel industry, which warrants more attention, especially in developing countries.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study is to make a case study of alliance politics practiced by MQM, a major political party in Sindh, which always remained in coalition to become a part of the government. The politics of alliance formation has remained a regular feature of politics in Pakistan since its inception. Several political alliances were formed in order to achieve the goals of power politics. MQM is a political party whose political influence is limited to the urban-based population influencing Urdu speaking mohajir community. From1988 on-wards, MQM formed alliances with different political parties;however, it could not become a national-level political party. It is a qualitative based study conducted to achieve research purposes. The findings suggest that MQM's alliance politics met failure due to multiple factors such as the party's alleged involvement in violence, practicing the politics of ethnicity, and pursuing regional interests rather than national goals. Moreover, unrealistic demands from the partners, pursuance of personal agendas and dissent of the state to the party's activities However, it left deep impressions on the national political landscape.

Abstract (sommario):
Following the launch of the National Health Insurance (NHI) program in 1995, universal coverage was achieved in Taiwan. In the period immediately following the introduction of the program, private hospitals did well and many opportunists entered Taiwan's rapidly expanding, prosperous healthcare market. However, the boom did not last long, ending with Bureau of NHI's hospital global budget system in 2002. The new NHI policies, stricter regulations, and higher public expectations of healthcare services intensified competition in the healthcare market and many private hospitals were forced to close. The Taiwan Landseed Medical Alliance (TLMA) was formed in 1993 by eight hospitals. It was the first successful hospital alliance in Taiwan. Although most of the alliance members were private district hospitals, through collaboration and integrated networks TLMA offered a unique model that combined the strength of each of these small-scale hospitals. The alliance thus enhanced the ability of its members to survive despite fierce competition, and increased their capacity to provide first-rate health care. By fully implementing the operations and development strategies inherent in a collaborative hospital group, TLMA members worked through difficulties together and are already on course to meet many other alliance goals including the upgrading of hospital management practices and service quality, improvement of the medical environment, and promotion of good hospital practice. The case aims to evoke discussion on the important role of alliances in competitive markets and ways to form strategic alliances. Supportive actions and alliance structures should also be considered.

Abstract (sommario):
PurposePrior research suggests that organizational alliances' contribution to innovation performance is conditional to absorptive capacity (AC). Instead of an antecedent of alliances, in this study, the authors conceptualize and evaluate AC as an outcome of alliance intensity.Design/methodology/approachThe authors tested their theoretical framework using multivariate statistical analysis on data collected from a survey applied to dedicated biotechnology firms (DBFs) from three countries: Brazil, Portugal and Spain.FindingsFirst, the results show that whereas the high alliance intensity effect is positive and stronger on RAC, it is negative and weaker on PAC. Second, the alliance intensity effect on RAC is strengthened when firms have alliances only in their home country and the top manager does not have both academic and managerial experiences.Practical implicationsThe authors’ study suggests as implications for DBFs: (1) firms should form alliances to develop AC, (2) firms should consider alliances for improving AC when top managers' expertise is not diverse, and (3) firms should consider only alliances with national partners as a differential for AC development.Originality/valueThis research contributes to the literature of dynamic capabilities, AC, alliances and innovation management by providing empirical validation for key contingencies surrounding the benefits of alliances as an antecedent of AC.

Abstract (sommario):
Through this research, we examined whether airlines vicariously learn more from accidents of alliance members. We set organizational learning as our dependent variable and defined it as a reduction in the subsequent accident rate. Our research also examined the moderating effect of liability (U.S. air carriers) by hypothesizing that U.S. air carriers are more likely to learn from alliance memberships. In sum, the results of our analyses showed that an airline is more likely to learn from alliance members’ failure experiences. Furthermore, findings of the moderating effect of liability (U.S. air carriers) revealed that U.S. air carriers are more likely to learn from alliance memberships. In addition, findings on the moderating effect of environmentally sustainable airlines revealed that an environmentally sustainable airline is more likely to learn from alliance memberships. This research was examined using the accidents database from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) of world commercial airlines from 2008 to 2018. We contributed to the previous line of research that explored factors influencing organizational learning and the benefits of forming alliances. The findings of this research could apply to other fields with alliances and accidents.

Abstract (sommario):
As the Sino-Russian military partnership deepens, scholars from both sides have had various discussions on whether a military alliance would be formed. Most scholars believe that maintaining a partnership is the best option for both countries at present, whether out of their actual needs or national interest. However, scholars from both sides have disagreed slightly on the core issue and details. On the Chinese side, most scholars had not discussed the possibility of establishing a military alliance until 2012, they had usually confirmed that the Chinese government is firmly committed to the non-alliance policy. Between 2012 and 2014, there was a great discussion about possibility of establishing a military alliance. Some scholars explore the preference for a non-alliance policy from the interest, theoretical and purely safety perspectives, while others illustrate the benefits of a Sino-Russian alliance through different angles, such as conflicts, external factors, relations with the US and the handling of international affairs. However, when Chinese President Xi Jinping pointed out in a speech in 2015 that the two countries “should be partners and not allies”, Chinese scholars again placed non-alliance at the core of Sino-Russian relations. While Russian scholars are also inclined towards the non-alliance theory, there is another argument: Sino-Russian alliance could be a possible option. This conclusion is mainly based on the two countries’ different understanding on foreign policy and alliance formation. China have always adhered to an independent, stable and sustained foreign policy, maintaining partnerships with all countries but forming alliances with none. While also adopting an independent and practical foreign policy, Russia has alliances, and is more familiar with them. China and Russian have formed three alliances throughout their diplomatic history, all of which had failed and obstructed the long-term cooperation and development of the two nations. Based on the research and opinions of Chinese and Russia scholars, the best option remains a non-alliance.

The article examines strategic alliances as a phenomenon of the global environment. A retrospective of the creation of alliances is considered. Particular attention is paid to the study of various approaches to the definition of the concept of “strategic alliance”. Various approaches to determining the features and criteria for classifying national companies as a strategic alliance are characterized. The types and classification of strategic alliances are determined. The positive aspects of creating strategic alliances are noted. It has been proven that the creation of an alliance occurs by recognizing the fact that each of the partners has some unique resource that he uses as his contribution to the alliance, this could be: managerial know-how, technology, market access, etc. The key factors for the success of strategic alliances are considered.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Physical activity health promotion coalitions are uncommon but important for beneficial collective impact on public health. The authors sought to obtain the viewpoints of member organizations of an Australian physical activity alliance, the National Physical Activity Alliance. Methods: The authors conducted an online survey regarding member agenda, commitment, and vision for the alliance. Questions were mostly open ended (eg, “What are the 3 areas of priority related to physical activity that you would like The Alliance to focus on?”). A total of 11 Australian organizations involved in physical activity public health (eg, the nongovernment organization Alzheimer’s Australia and the professional fitness association Fitness Australia). Results: 82% of members responded to the survey. Member programs and goals were diverse and overlapping. There was agreement among members that the main priority area for alliance focus was a national exercise referral scheme. Barriers for members achieving their own goals as well as alliance goals focused on governmental issues, including inadequate government funding for physical activity public health. Conclusions: This novel survey highlights the promise and difficulties of a physical activity coalition, with the difficulties, namely lack of governmental funding, resulting in a stagnation of the alliance’s activities since the study was carried out.

Abstract (sommario):
Alliance is a type of gathering international forces to enhance national power, as well as prevent or stand up against external threats for national security. From time immemorial, states never stopped seeking and building up their alliances to share common interests. In the Cold war, Vietnam has established strategic alliances with communist states, especially with the Soviet Union and China in order to get international supports for national liberation struggle and unification. It was the international alliance based on Marxist ideology; however, the differences of national interests among them made the Vietnam international alliances face to so many difficulties. Since the Cold war ended, the international system has basically changed considerably. Communism broke up. New international centers of power have appeared. Vietnam’s former strategic alliances based on Marxist ideology hardly existed. Facing this situation, Vietnam began enforcing the foreign policy “diversifying and multilateralizing”, under the motto “making friends with all nations around the world”. This does not mean Vietnam neglects looking for her necessary alliances. International alliances after the Cold war are no longer set up upon ideological background, but based on national interests among the states. In the international nowadays conditions and furthermore , Vietnam will have to seek , sooner or later, some main strategic alliances to consolidate her international position and maintain her independence , sovereignty ; carry out modernizing and industrializing the country. In the current and future international setting, Vietnam, sooner or later, must find herself some wide strategic alliances to strengthen her position in international arena and to consolidate her independence and sovereignty on the way to industrialization and modernization. Choosing strategic alliances, for Vietnam, is all the more important as it ensures security not only for Vietnam but also for Indochina and Southeast Asia.

Current m-commerce business models show that m-commerce depends on complex networks of business relationships, which often comprise telecommunications service providers, mobile device makers, banking industry, Internet search engine providers, and various third-party value-adding companies. Due to the nature of m-commerce, the key to success in m-commerce lies predominantly in managing a network of alliances. This paper answers research questions, such as why do companies team up for m-commerce? What are the key challenges facing the alliances? How can companies address the challenges? What does the future hold for the study of strategic alliances including m-commerce alliances? This paper extends strategic alliance theories to the study of m-commerce alliances that are formulated in various cultural and national backgrounds. The authors examine both strategic and operational strategies for m-commerce alliances and discuss a wide range of issues in the formulation and implementation of m-commerce alliance strategy.

Abstract (sommario):
Technological alliances play an important role in generating innovations but face the challenge of effective matchmaking when finding suitable partners in “open innovation” among networks of innovating firms. Intermediaries refer to those external mechanisms/institutions that can appropriately support companies in their innovation-related activities. They are frequently used to build a bridge between different competency constraints among companies. The purpose of this paper was to try to understand the role of a firm’s alliances within the context of open innovation. What do innovation intermediaries of collaborative partners contribute? Using the “Strategic Alliance Database” established by the National Science Council (NSC) in Taiwan as a basis, this study empirically explored the brokerage roles in the alliance that intermediaries take on to facilitate technological innovation and an innovation process. By using the technique of two-mode network analysis for social network analysis, this research focused on the question of how a technological alliance creates a platform for firms to execute matchmaking for new and/or relevant partners. The results presented here reveal that brokerage roles can be used to develop collaborations. The strategic position of the intermediary can activate different resources from the ones embedded in an alliance network.

Abstract (sommario):
To understand a phenomenon and to overcome it effectively, we need a lens that can see the phenomenon clearly. The meaning and type of the phenomenon look different depending on which lens we look through, and furthermore, the countermeasures and solution method for it are also different. The same goes for international relations. Alliance diplomacy, one of the various approaches to understanding the behavior of international relations, can be said to be a basic diplomatic means to maintain the balance of power between countries. The key to alliance diplomacy is the balance of power. The true purpose of alliance diplomacy is to secure a balanced power against the hostile country by forming an alliance with other countries when national security cannot be achieved on its own. The military value of Romania is increasing at the European level by the United States trying to strengthen NATO’s current strategic role. Romania is a very important region for the national interest of the United States. It is true that Romania, which is very close to Russia, a hostile hegemon, is also faithfully responding to changes in the security environment through an alliance with the United States. However, the range of mutual understanding between the United States and European countries across the Atlantic Ocean is getting narrower. Between the two powers, Europe, which provides software values such as economy and culture, and the United States, which provides hardware means such as political and military power, the scope of Romania’s movement may be narrowed. Romania is receiving economic support from the EU, a large European economic community, and security guarantees from NATO, led by the United States. Therefore, in the face of the dilemma of cooperation and discord between the two powers, Romania will have to properly adapt to the international system that is transitioning to a multipolar system by maximizing its strategic flexibility.

Abstract (sommario):
Jordan as a country that is flanked by several countries in conflict and does not have a wealth of natural resources, making alliances very important for the survival of the country. In meeting these needs, Jordan often allies with hegemonic actors for protective status as well as financial assistance. So in the scope of the Middle East, Jordan chose an alliance with the country of Saudi Arabia and its coalition in the Gulf region in the Gulf Cooperation Council. This alliance was continued until the 2017 Qatar diplomatic crisis, Jordan was forced to cut ties with Qatar so that the alliance with the Saudi kingdom would not be damaged. However, in 2019, Jordan normalized diplomatic relations with Qatar after their two-year stretch. This decision also came even though Saudi Arabia and its coalition had not normalized with Qatar itself, and could potentially jeopardize Jordan's existence if it did so because it was against the Saudi coalition. So the researcher tries to analyze this phenomenon using regional security theory and the level of national identity analysis. Researchers later found that the motive behind the decision was Qatar's support for the protective status of Jordan's Jerusalem.

Abstract (sommario):
This article examines the 1967–1971 political prisoner solidarity movement for Black Panther Party co-founder Huey P. Newton as a case study of multiracial radical alliances in the San Francisco Bay Area. In contrast to the predominant trope of “unlikely allies,” I argue that the activists examined in this article who formed alliances with Newton and the Panthers were predisposed to collaborative activism through their common anti-imperialist orientation, expressed as anti-racism, anti-capitalism, and anti–U.S. military interventionism. In addition, I show that earlier alliances laid the foundation for alliances with later movements and organizations, creating what I term “genealogies of alliance” within the Free Huey Movement that demonstrate a persistent desire for collaborative activism throughout this era. This article prompts a reconsideration of Sixties radicalism; in contrast to scholarly and popular interpretations that focus on activists’ sectarianism and divisiveness, the Free Huey Movement illuminates how activists theorized and endeavored to work toward the collective liberation of all people.

Abstract (sommario):
The advancing process of economic globalization and the related increase in market competitiveness compels companies to search for new markets. Internationalisation processes present in all world-economy sectors, including the automotive industry, are manifested in such phenomena as entering into strategic alliances and the change of world corporations production structures. In the world economy, alliances are entered into mainly by high technology enterprises, such as telecommunication, information technology, aviation and automotive industries. In numerous companies, in particular in trans-national ones, there is a tendency to get involved in cooperative activity, carrying out mergers or concluding strategic alliances. Corporate strategic alliances result in the emergence of various space and production links through the creation of network connection systems, organizing world economic space at the same time.Consequently, changes occur in the ownership structure of concerns (concentration of capital), and relocation and delocalization of world production take place. In this context, this article analyses the process of shaping and functioning of the strategic alliance between Nissan and Renault international automotive corporations, as well as presents the benefits of the strategic alliance formed by the mentioned companies.

Abstract (sommario):
This research explores Otto von Bismarck's multifaceted political journey from 1871 to 1890, focusing on his alliance with the "National Liberals," economic policies, and the failed Kulturkampf. Bismarck's shift towards conservative parties in 1878, marked by economic reforms and resistance against emerging social democracy, reveals the complex interplay of political forces. The study also delves into Bismarck's fervent anti-socialist stance and the subsequent ban on the Social Democratic Party in 1878, leading to the adoption of social laws. The paper examines Bismarck's failed attempts to garner worker support and the political consequences of the 1890 elections. Additionally, the research evaluates Bismarck's diplomatic successes in foreign policy, including the Three Emperors' League (1872), the Dual Alliance (1879), and the Triple Alliance (1882). Bismarck's intricate web of alliances and diplomatic finesse are explored, culminating in his resignation in 1890 amid conflicts with Emperor William II, leaving Europe in need of diplomatic stability.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The National Alliance for Caregiving (NAC) conducts research, does policy analysis, develops national best-practice programs, and works to increase public awareness of family caregiving issues. In addition to national research and advocacy, NAC provides technical assistance to a national network of caregiving coalitions representing nearly 30 states. NAC recognizes that family caregivers provide important societal and financial contributions toward maintaining the well-being of those in their care. The need to support the nation’s nearly 53 million family caregivers and sustain them as the backbone of our chronic and long-term care system is a central issue in national and state efforts to reform healthcare, especially in light of the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. This presentation will provide information on the current status of these national and state efforts.

International Journal of Business and Society 22, n. 2 (12 agosto 2021): 675–95. http://dx.doi.org/10.33736/ijbs.3751.2021.

Abstract (sommario):
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the agriculture sector in Malaysia are still seen to contribute only a small portion towards Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the total number of the national workforce. As for agricultural SMEs, innovation activities are needed to produce quality agricultural-based products to meet the increasing of Malaysia and world market demand. Nevertheless, innovation among agricultural SMEs is still less encouraging. Hence, this study aims to investigate the effect of innovation capabilities towards performance of agricultural SMEs in Malaysia and determine the role of strategic alliance as a moderator in influencing the performance of agricultural SMEs. The conceptual framework of innovation capabilities is based on Resource-Based View Theory and Schumpeter Innovation Theory that considers strategic alliance will positively affect the relationship between innovation capabilities and SME performance. A total of 136 respondents from Agricultural SMEs were used for data analysis process using SmartPLS 3.0 software. The results show that innovation capabilities have a positive impact on the performance of SMEs, while strategic alliance does not affect the relationship between innovation capabilities and agricultural SME performance. Although strategic alliance has insignificant effect, this might be resulted from the emphasis of this study as it defined strategic alliances as acquisitions of companies. For agricultural SMEs in Malaysia, entrepreneurs need to look at an alliance from a positive perspective by looking it as a joint venture process in resource sharing that will benefit the enterprises, thus it is not only meant acquisition. The implication of this study is expected to contribute and enhance the role of innovation capabilities among entrepreneurs and strategic alliances in the Malaysian agricultural SMEs.

Abstract (sommario):
e18055 Background: Targeted therapies have prompted clinical trials centers to screen large numbers of patients of a particular tumor type and to test further to identify those with molecular targets that meet the criteria of the study protocol. In March of 2014, the NCI converted Cooperative Groups into National Cancer Trials Network (NCTN) to better address the scientific needs and challenges these more innovative treatments introduce. The Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology is one of the five US Oncology Network groups, and Lead Academic Participating Sites (LAPS) are academic institutions recognized to be able to enroll high numbers of patients onto NCTN trials. Some LAPS sites were recognized to overlap into the Alliance Network as well. An analysis of their recruitment rates and comparison to non-LAPS or non-Alliance sites were reviewed. Methods: Between the years of 2011 to 2016, Covance Xcellerate captured over 2,688 unique Investigators participating in cancer trials in the United States. Seven hundred, seventy-four, cancer trials were involved. Nine hundred, forty-eight unique sites were identified. Results: On a site view, those institutions that were part of the Alliance Network enrolled patients at a median rate of 0.24 pts/site/mo, while LAPS sites recruited at a faster median enrollment rate of 0.33 pts/site/mo. Sites that overlapped within both networks enrolled at a rate of 0.30 pts/site/mo, and sites that were not members of either the Alliance or LAPS network enrolled at a rate of 0.23 pts/site/mo. When analysis of recruitment rate was narrowed further to look at individual investigators that were members of these networks or not, investigators representing from both Alliance and LAPS, their median enrollment rate was slightly higher at 0.33 pts/site/mo when compared to those investigators that were only members of LAPS network. Also, those sites that part of Alliance and LAPS recruited the most patients into studies. Conclusions: Sites that are members of networks such as the Alliance or LAPS, can recruit more patients into a clinical trial at a faster rate than sites that were not participants of the Alliance or LAPS.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the dynamics of contractual and relational mechanisms during different phases of multi-partner R&D alliances. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses a longitudinal single case study to gain in-depth understanding of which governance mechanisms are best suited for different phases of alliance collaboration. Applying a retrospective strategy for data collection, three rounds of interviews were conducted with representatives of all partner firms. The data were complemented by documentary analysis of both internal documents and publicly available information. Findings The findings suggest that the use of governance mechanisms in multi-partner alliances depends on the characteristics of alliance phases. Relational governance is most important in the exploration and development phases, while the importance of contractual governance comes to the fore during the development and finalization phases. Despite the predominance of one type of mechanism, the findings support a complementary perspective of governance mechanisms. Research limitations/implications The results of a single case study offer limited generalizability and should thus be treated with caution. More cross-industry, cross-national studies should be conducted to verify the applicability of the findings to other industries, cultures and geographical contexts. Practical implications Managers should be aware that different phases of the alliance life cycle have different control and coordination needs, and should rely on different mechanisms during different phases of the alliance. Originality/value The authors have synthesized insights from various perspectives (transaction cost economics, organization theory, social exchange theory), and developed a multidisciplinary approach to multi-partner collaborations.

Abstract (sommario):
Alliances are being used by environmental organizations to achieve their mission of improving the natural environment. Many of these alliances have been formed within the nonprofit sector, whereas others have been formed across economic sectors with government agencies and businesses as partners. The authors discuss two studies that examine differences among alliances formed by environmental organizations with (1) government agencies, (2) for-profit businesses, and (3) other environmental organizations. In Study 1, which is based on a national survey of environmental organizations, they examine the relative effectiveness, formality, influence, and political position associated with different types of alliances. In Study 2, they further explore these relationships through in-depth telephone interviews of a subsample of respondents drawn from Study I. Both studies contribute to the understanding of nonprofit alliance relationships and their role in influencing environmental policy and market behavior.

This study examines the influence that national culture has on the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and strategic alliance formation. Using a sample of small- to medium-sized enterprises located in Finland, Greece, Indonesia, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Sweden, we find that firms with higher levels of entrepreneurial orientation will use strategic alliances more extensively (i.e., use a greater number of agreements) than those firms with a weaker entrepreneurial orientation. Moreover, this relationship is strengthened in those countries that demonstrate either feminine or collective characteristics.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – Using a case study of an international sport event, the purpose of this paper is to examine the inter-organisational relationship between a sport event property and its corporate sponsors. Design/methodology/approach – Interviews were conducted with personnel from the national sport organisation responsible for the delivery of this major event, and from four of its corporate sponsorship partners. Findings – The findings indicated that both formal and informal governance were critical to the relationships underpinning these sponsorship alliances. From a dyadic perspective, it was found that the satisfaction of sponsorship partners had two key elements: tangible commercial benefits from the sponsor-sponsee alliance, and the less tangible but nonetheless valuable relationship support within the partnership. In short, partner satisfaction and alliance stability stemmed from relational constructs and the balance of formal governance mechanisms. Originality/value – This paper explores the variables that generate value and maintain alliance stability for improved sponsorship governance. These findings, while focused on a single case study, have implications for research in the field of sponsorship and to the area of business-to-business relationships more broadly.

Abstract (sommario):
In the European Green Deal, the European Commission expressed its will to build alliances with European Union’s (EU) partners who have a similar approach to environmental protection. The first green alliance was concluded by the EU with Japan on 27 May 2021. The aim of the paper is to analyse the content and nature of this alliance and to assess its potential effectiveness as an instrument for the implementation of the European Green Deal and its possible impact on international relations and respectively EU, national, and international legal norms in the field of the environment. As shown in this study, the first green alliance is not a model solution. On the one hand, this instrument requires a formal correction (involving Member States and relevant EU institutions in adopting any amendments in line with the principles of division of competences between the EU and its Member States and institutional balance, clarification of the nature of obligations), on the other hand, it is deeply embedded in the unique international legal framework of EU-Japanese relations. However, the first green alliance has great potential to influence the EU's relations with other third countries and the content of the resulting legal norms at various levels.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper analyzes Russia’s perception of NATO since the beginning of its eastern enlargement. Russia’s reaction to the enlargement evolved from attempts to diffuse its potential damage through a limited cooperation to passive and then active policies of containment. The latter have resulted in a risky behavior with respect to the alliance and a concentration of Russian military on the Western border. Two factors can assist us in explaining Russia’s evolving perception of NATO from a potential partner to a renewed military threat — the historical experience of viewing the alliance, and theWest in general, as potentially threatening and the post-Cold war interaction with NATO that served to strengthen the historically developed perception. As of today, Russia has learned from its interaction with the alliance that NATO remains a principle threat to Russia’s national security and that through the alliance’s expansion the West seeks to exercise its cultural, economic, and political domination in Eurasia.
