Testo completoTerrestrialisation (colonisation of terrestrial environments) is a major step in the history of life. It goes along an explosion of biological diversity in continental environment (land and aerial environment), and reshape the superficial envelopes of Earth. In the animal kingdom, arthropods are one of the main actors of this ecological revolution (ex : insects, arachnids) that begins surely since the Ordovician (485-444 Ma) and increases during the Carboniferous (359-299 Ma). Another main part of this arthropod fauna, the myriapods (millipedes and centipedes), seems to colonise land early and play a crucial role in initial development of soils and nutriments cycle, leading the way to new floral and faunal colonisations. The exceptionnally preserved locality of Montceau-les-Mines (Saône-et-Loire; Carboniferous ~ 305 Ma) yields a rich and diversified flora and fauna preserved in 3D in nodules and offer an evolutive window on terrestriaisation. This PhD goal is to study the three groups of myriapods present in Montceau-les-Mines: the diplopods ("millipedes"), the arthropleurids and the euthycarcinoids to reconstruct with accuracy their morphology, their life mode, their adaptations to continental life, their role in continental ecosystem as well as their phylogenetic relationships (with extant representatives)

The arthropods represent the most extensive fossil register and the most abundant and diverse group of all terrestrial animals. Their track and trails provide important data for the study of this group evolution besides helping understanding their diversity and modern distribution. By analyzing the oscillation of the density of ichnofossils along the horizons of Varvito´s Park (Itu – SP), were made inferences about the geological history of the area, the population of arthropods that probably lived there and on the environmental conditions that surrounded them. For the analysis of the density and direction of the tracks, the methodology used was the esquadrinhamento. Also, an experiment was conducted in order to replicate the tracks in similar conditions to those found in the Park during the Carboniferous. It was made a taxonomic classification of the tracks and they were assigned to terrestrial diplopods (Myriapoda). The contextualization of the taphonomic analysis and the depositional history of Varvito´s Park led to the conclusion that myriapods, which have terrestrial habits, inhabited an area of cyclic flooding and therefore experienced environmental stress conditions in the summer, when the area received an influx of meltwater from a glacier located at a relatively long distance of the Park during the Carboniferous. The condition of environmental stress for this fauna, which may or may not cause episodes of mortality, was taking place due to the a thin sheet of water that came from the glacier. Because the tracks were in a preferred direction, one can infer that these animals got away from floods during the summer (stressful condition), which flow of water would probably have a reverse orientation. Considering the evidences of periglacial influence and the outflow of meltwater, the cold might have led to the freezing of soils in the terrestrial environment, creating shallow underwater environments, as well as the formation of ice sheets, thereby impeding gas exchange and the obtainment of nutrients. The tracks also present circular and semi-circular forms and have been interpreted as marks of animals’ agony under stressed conditions, corroborating the paleoecological reconstruction inferred.

Testo completoRhinocricus Karsch, 1881 currently has 207 species described and distributed mainly by the American continent, of which 65 are described for Brazil. The genus was based on the presence of scobinae (depressions in distal portion of prozonit). The present study evaluated the monophyly of three groups of species previously proposed in Rhinocricus. The data matrix was composed for 39 morphological characters and 30 species as terminal taxa, being 21 the ingroup, and nine the outgroup. We performed a parsimony analysis with implied weights using TNT software, obtaining the same best topology with three optimal K-values (5.992, 7.309, 9.105). None of the three previously proposed species groups of Rhinocricus was recovered monophyletic. Rhinocricus (Erythocricus) was recovered sister to all other species, and Argentocricus Verhoeff, 1941 resulted paraphyletic. The diagnostic characters traditionally used to separate species groups, subgenera, and genera were not recovered as synapomorphies. Still during the examination of the material four new species of Rhinocricus were discovered and here described. Further investigation including a broader species sample is needed attempting to establish robust relationship hypotheses between R. (Erythocricus), Argentocricus, and the remainder species of Rhinocricus, thus identifying the monophyletic groups in the genus and their synapomorphies.

Testo completoThe seasonal variation of diplopod community structure has been examined in languedoc, according to anthropic perturbations. The role of the diplopods as litter consumers has been estimated and the influence of specific factors which affect their microdistribution or their activity rythm has been tested in the laboratory. The most favourable environments are constituted by the coppice where the diplopods compose the dominant community among litter consumers. Diplopods have an essential role in the litter fragmentation. They take part in its transformation, synergistically with edaphic microorganisms. Photoperiod, temperature, water content of both leaves and substrate, as well as soil nature, are important factors which control litter consuming rate. This is maximal during spring and autumn because winter frost and summer drought slow down the consuming process. Old litter is more consumed than the current-year litter. The geographic origin of the millipedes can modify feeding preferences. It has been shown that under holm-oak coppice, diplopods fragment at least from 11% to 15% of the litter which falls down annually on the ground. Many anthropic factors (cutting, clearing up, animal feeding, trampling,. . . ) are able to modify the community organization of the diplopods, leading to change in the fragmentation rate of the litter. The glomerida are more sensitive than the iulida to those perturbations

Distributed sensor networks make extensive use of a common time reference. In this work we address the problem of time dissemination in a packet switched network when the nodes are NOT generally all connected to an accurate, external time reference source. We thoroughly analyze Network Time Protocol - version 3 and identify its oversimplified clock modeling and its neglect of network delay variance (network jitter) as the primal causes for its inaccuracy. We explicitly address frequency skew in our clock model and propose a novel Kalman filtering technique for de-noising (remove of network jitter) during the NTP time synchronization process. The parameters of the Kalman linear estimator are optimal and they are computed online from the network environment, with a well-defined procedure. Our End-to-End technique decreases NTP rms error by two orders of magnitude and is compared with a software phased lock loop and a linear programming technique, with cross traffic exhibiting long-range dependence (fractional Brownian motion cross-traffic) or no dependence at all (white Gaussian case). We conclude with applications over packet switched networks that require time synchronization, like spatial filtering (beam-forming). The suite of algorithms and applications define a new class of packet switched networks, called Myriad Networks.

Testo completoSkin tone bias or colorism is “the tendency to perceive or behave toward members of a racial category based on the lightness or darkness of their skin tone” (Maddox & Gray, 2002, p. 250). It is “the prejudicial treatment of individuals falling within the same racial group on the basis of skin color” (Thompson & Keith, 2004, p. 46) and “the allocation of privilege and disadvantage according to the lightness or darkness of one’s skin” (Burke & Embrick, 2008, p. 17). Skin tone bias/colorism is a form of discrimination based on skin tone that typically privileges lighter-skinned individuals and penalizes darker-skinned individuals within and across racial and ethnic groups (Hunter, 2007; Jones, 2000). For my study, I focused my investigation of skin tone bias/colorism in relation to Blacks in the United States of America.
I conducted semi-structured face-to-face individual interviews with 30 Black undergraduate students (15 men and 15 women) at the University of Pennsylvania using purposive sampling. To triangulate data for this study, participants’ skin color was determined by two self-report assessments: the Skin Color Satisfaction Scale (SCSS) (Bond & Cash, 1992; Falconer & Neville, 2000) and the Skin Color Assessment Procedure (SCAP) (Bond & Cash, 1992; Coard, Breland, & Raskin, 2001). These assessments were administered prior to the interview.
Contrary to societal myth, Blacks are not a monolithic group. The impetus for my dissertation was to develop a qualitative study that necessitates the acknowledgment of the heterogeneity of Black students’ backgrounds and experiences with college, to ultimately shed light on the potential challenges faced by varying Black students in college based on skin tone, and to provide recommendations for Black students to effectively navigate highly selective institutions of higher education – with hopes to increase their persistence and success in college. Recommendations for higher education institutions, faculty, and student affairs administrators to better support Black students are also provided.
My research questions were as follows: How do the academic, personal, and social experiences of lighter-skinned Black students at a highly selective higher education institution vary compared with the experiences of darker-skinned Black students? How does this variation in experiences between lighter and darker-skinned Black students matter within the higher education context?

Testo completoIn the first chapter, we revise the taxonomy of a lineage of plant bugs (Hemiptera: Miridae) that has radiated in the islands of French Polynesia. Six species of endemic Pseudoloxops plant bugs were previously known from two islands in French Polynesia, indicating a small radiation. We collected ecological, morphological, molecular, and geographical data for hundreds of fresh and historical Pseudoloxops specimens, expanding the genus' range to nine islands in two archipelagoes (the Austral and Society Islands). We combined all of the above data sources in an iterative integrative taxonomy framework to test the six existing species hypotheses and to search for new diversity.
In the second chapter, we explore the relative importance of ecology and geographic isolation in this lineage to provide a first approximation of whether the radiation was adaptive or non-adaptive. We collected Pseudoloxops from a wide range of plants, with 27 species in 25 different plant families and 13 orders. We then inferred a combined Bayesian molecular phylogeny from three genes, including 25 of the 26 known Pseudoloxops species, to examine the roles of plant affiliation and geography (island distribution) in speciation. We reconstructed the ancestral states using parsimony for these two characters, and found 12 speciation events that were well-supported in the phylogeny. Both plant-switching and island-hopping were correlated with speciation. For the 7 speciation events for which we could unequivocally determine plant affiliation before and after speciation, 4 were associated with a plant shift. For the 8 speciation events where island distribution could be reconstructed, two involved shifts to a new island. There were 5 cases for which we could determine both character states before and after speciation. In three of them, speciation occurred within the same locality with a switch in plant taxonomic order, suggesting that the lineage has great dietary versatility. However, much more research into feeding needs to be conducted, as anecdotal evidence from Pseudoloxops outside of French Polynesia suggests they may be facultative predators. In the other two speciation events, there was neither a geographic shift nor a change in plant affiliation, suggesting some other mechanism for speciation. Based on our results, both plant-switching and geography have played a role in the diversification of this radiation.
In the third chapter, we address the larger societal impact of taxonomic and biodiversity research by examining the effect of a natural history-driven curriculum on elementary schoolchildren's scientific knowledge. While studies have demonstrated the potential for natural history education to improve children's attitudes towards and knowledge of science and nature, few studies have been done in areas where indigenous culture heavily influences children's worldview. The lead author taught a nine-month natural history/biodiversity class focused on insects and plants to fifth-graders at the Pao Pao elementary school on the French Polynesian island of Moorea and tested their scientific knowledge before and after receiving the program. We compared their results to a control that did not receive the program, and while both cohorts improved, the experimental group's improvement was significantly greater (mean of 82.2% vs. 30.5%). We performed a delayed post-test evaluation three years after the conclusion of the program with a subset of the experimental cohort to test their retention and interest in science. Finally, the qualitative coding of the experimental group's test and survey responses revealed both the influence of indigenous culture on their scientific understanding and the appeal of taxonomy and field trips to children. When prompted for an example of a native plant, 24% of the experimental group named a plant introduced by the Polynesians, suggesting the misconception that plants with a prevalent role in indigenous culture have always been there. In the follow-up survey, 36.7% mentioned the field trips among their memories of the course, and 20% gave full scientific names for species they recalled from the class. The latter contrasts with the commonly held belief that taxonomy is too arcane to connect with the general public. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Testo completoThe latest statistics released by INE prove the strategic importance of the tourism sector to Portugal: in 2017 tourism revenues reach 15,2 billion euros and the country consolidates the 5th position among the countries with the highest touristic balance of the European Union (INE, 2018). Despite the visible contribution of the sector, certain fragilities remained, namely the ones related with the seasonality of tourism (Villalobos, 2017). One of the main goals of the 2027 Tourism Strategy is to reduce the seasonality index from the current 36.5% to 33.5% by the year 2027. One of Turismo de Portugal’s strategies focuses on events such as the Web Summit, in order to highlight the country in the scope of international congresses and events, since these can mitigate the seasonal effects and, at the same time, to boost the investment in Portugal (idem). The internship report aims to complete the Master in Tourism and Hospitality Management at Universidade Europeia and was held at the Hotel Myriad by SANA Hotels, in Parque das Nações, Lisbon. The internship lasted 512 hours from September to December 2018 and took place in the Sales Department. The Sales Department is responsible for all the promotion and sales activities of the Hotel Myriad, whose targets are mainly the corporate and Meetings Industry segments, which are increasingly relevant and beneficial to the Tourism and Hospitality sectors. The purpose of this report is to emphasize the importance and knowledge of the Sales Department regarding its internal and communication processes within itself and with the other departments, including the clients themselves. Subsequently, improvements are suggested regarding the dynamics related to the Sales Department, based on the knowledge acquired during both the Master’s and the internship.

The drastic increase of patent filing and applications on genes for past thirty years has shown the increased importance gene related inventions. One primary motivation of setting up the patent system is to provide an incentive to invent by insuring the investors and prospect inventors a possible return or gain of the research cost. But this exclusivity offered by gene patents has produced some adverse consequences such as the inaccessibility to genes for research, increase cost in diagnostic cost or deprive the opportunity for second opinion for patients. These are some reasons why the issue on the patentability of human genes has attracted more concern since the instigation of the Myriad case. The plaintiffs of this case are mainly research groups and patients that have “negatively” affected by the gene patent and therefore, hope to invalidate the patent by challenging the gene sequence not a patentable subject matter. The uniqueness and the complexity of gene patents are related to the unidentified functions in genes or broad wordings used in claims. As a result, granting gene patents may stifle the future genetic research and development of diagnostic test such as parallel sequencing and whole genome sequencing. In addition, lack of clear standards when determining patentable subject matter is also another sophisticated issue that needs to be solved when granting gene patents. Thus, the major focus of this thesis is to analyze different standards used in the precedent cases in U.S. and compare these standards with the standards used in the Myriad case. Thus, hope to understand Federal Court’s recent view on this issue. Furthermore, discuss the implications of these new holdings on the public, investors and prospect inventors. Lastly, with different problems arise from the granting of gene patents and propose some possible solutions to help solving the current and future situation on gene patents.

Gene inventions, the upstream portion of biotechnology industry, play an important role in human disease prevention, detection, and treatment. Gene patenting ensures patentees’ investment and efforts on the research. However, it also raises lots of arguments, especially on the eligibility of an isolated gene. Should an isolated gene be considered as a human invention or it is merely a natural existing product? Association for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics was a case challenging the eligibility of gene patents in the United States. The Supreme Court overthrew the past decisions that recognized genes eligible for patent protection, and invalided Myriad’s isolated human gene patents. While considering the gene eligibility, it always came to the product of nature doctrine. However, this doctrine was inconsistently applied to the purified product or biomolecule patents. In addition, the “markedly different” standard adopted by the Supreme Court seems overlapping with other patent substantial elements, such as unobviousness, while determining an isolated gene an invention or discovery. In 2014, USPTO issued a memorandum for procedures of subject matter eligibility analysis in order to reflect Myriad’s decision. The present thesis introduces the details of the Myriad case, and the development and establishment of the product of nature doctrine. Moreover, the present thesis also exams the Supreme Court’s decision, questions it unsolved, and the USPTO memorandum. Finally, how many patents granted will be affected by this case? What can patent holders and applicants do to respond to such change? How does this case impact on public healthcare and biotechnology industry? The present thesis not only reviews the questions above, but also compares Taiwan and European Patent Acts and correspondence cases.

The strength of broadcasting media becomes weaker because of the attacks from TV, computers and Internet. Nowadays broadcasting programs contain few children’s radio dramas. However, people’s efforts and dedication still complete step by step the indispensable jigsaw puzzle in children’s literary history though the children’s literary stage has declined gradually. The Children’s Radio Dramas of the Children’s Studio by National Educational Broadcasting Station receiving authorization from Ministry of Education conveys principles about morality, lives, ethics and patriotism to contemporary children and also the script of radio dramas which fits and gets close to children is based on these principles. The thesis concludes that differences from children’s mental learning states and educational essentials cause the children’s disparity of perception toward the theme of radio dramas. It really relies on school’s ingenious design and assistance to continue the children’s radio dramas with resources on hand.
