This article presents a report on technological and aesthetic practices in the variable-acoustics performance hall, Espace de Projection, at the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique. The hall is surrounded by a 350-loudspeaker array for sound-field reproduction using holophonic approaches such as wave-field synthesis and higher-order Ambisonics. First we present the design and implementation of the audio system and discuss the challenges of both hardware and software architectures. This is followed by a discussion of spatial composition techniques, aesthetic approaches, and methodologies for composing computer music for high-density loudspeaker arrays, explored through the paradigmatic examples of pieces produced by two artist-in-research residencies.

We report here on the recent use of the Orchidée software by three different young composers in various compositional and instrumental contexts. Orchidée is a computer-aided orchestration environment designed to aid musicians exploring the space of instrument timbre mixtures and finding timbre combinations that fit a set of user-specified perceptual requirements. The first beta version of the software was released by the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique's (IRCAM's) Music Representations Group in 2009, after four years of intensive research, and it can already handle a small range of real-life situations, typically timbre imitation or orchestral synthesis, under instrumental constraints. Detailed examples, including score and audio excerpts, are provided.

Cet article vise à rendre publiques de nouvelles solutions créatives pour la dramaturgie sonore dans le spectacle vivant. Ces nouvelles technologies sont le fruit d’une trentaine d’années de recherches sur la voix menées par plusieurs équipes de l’Institut de recherche et coordination acoustique / musique (IRCAM). Dans un premier temps, la problématique générale du traitement automatique de la voix est abordée afin de situer la spécificité de l’IRCAM dans le contexte international de la recherche sur la parole et dans le but de présenter différents facteurs qui rendent, aujourd’hui, les nouvelles technologies sonores bénéfiques à la création artistique. Dans un deuxième temps, cet article tente de présenter différents outils qui peuvent apporter des éléments de réponse à des questions dramaturgiques. Enfin, la dernière partie de l’article porte une attention particulière au suivi de voix, jeune technologie prometteuse qui sert la composition théâtrale et la régie sonore. Cet article se termine par un rappel de l’importance d’intégrer ces outils dans le processus de création, les distinguant par là des techniques d’amplification palliative du théâtre.

À la fois compositeur et chercheur, Manoury s’est très tôt intéressé à l’interaction en temps réel entre les instruments acoustiques et les nouvelles technologies liées à l’informatique musicale, telle que développée à l’Institut de recherche et coordination acoustique/musique (Ircam) à partir des années 1980. Après Répons (première version en 1981) de Pierre Boulez, le besoin se fait en effet sentir de casser la rigidité de l’outil électronique et d’explorer au-delà du dialogue conventionnel instrument/ordinateur, afin d’élaborer, enfin, une symbiose réciproquement profitable, malléable en concert, et constamment renouvelable, à la manière d’une interprétation concertante. Après l’instrument, le compositeur devait très rapidement se pencher sur la problématique soulevée par la voix. À partir de 1993, Manoury travaillera ainsi à la capture, puis au traitement numérique de la voix en temps réel, d’abord par une analyse des composantes acoustiques du son, puis une manipulation de ces composantes. Le cycle de mélodies En écho (1993-1994) pour soprano et électronique représentera le premier stade de cette réflexion, toujours dans le cadre de recherches expérimentales. Si le chercheur Manoury recherche l’innovation, le compositeur Manoury, quant à lui, se tourne aussi volontiers vers les institutions et les genres musicaux traditionnels, dont l’opéra et la musique chorale. L’écriture vocale de Manoury, que l’on peut qualifier de simple et naturelle, témoigne d’une grande flexibilité et est le fruit d’une réflexion qui prend en compte les limites du langage post-sériel, et dont témoignent ses différents opéras. Or, ce retour au genre-roi ne saurait se priver de l’innovation électronique nouvellement créée ; 60e Parallèle (1995-1996), K… (2000), La Frontière (2003) et La Nuit de Gutenberg (2011) intègrent une partie électronique, profitant, pour chaque opus, des avancées de la technique au service de la voix et de l’art lyrique. L’objet de ce texte est de proposer une approche globale des différents projets lyriques de Manoury, afin de mettre notamment en lumière le rôle de plus en plus prononcé de la transformation électronique sur le plan dramatique, et d’étudier également le réel travail de réciprocité entre l’instrumental et l’électronique.

This article examines computer-based music (ca. 1982–87) created by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho at the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM) in Paris. A detailed account of archival materials for an early étude in voice synthesis, Vers le blanc (1982), demonstrates the music-theoretical import of software to Saariaho’s development of a robust compositional method that resonated with the emergent aesthetics of a post-spectral milieu. Subsequent analyses of two additional works from this period—Jardin secret II (1984–86) for harpsichord and tape, and IO (1987) for large ensemble and electronics—serve to illustrate Saariaho’s extension of this method into instrumental settings. Specific techniques highlighted include the use of interpolation systems to create continuous processes of transformation, the organization of individual musical parameters into multidimensional formal networks, and the exploration of harmonic structures based on the analysis of timbral phenomena. Relating these techniques to the affordances of contemporaneous IRCAM technologies, including CHANT, FORMES, and Saariaho’s own customized program, “transkaija,” this article adopts a transductive approach to archival research that is responsive to the diverse media artifacts associated with computer-based composition.

Abstract Somax2 is an AI-based multiagent system for human-machine coimprovisation that generates stylistically coherent streams while continuously listening and adapting to musicians or other agents. The model on which it is based can be used with little configuration to interact with humans in full autonomy, but it also allows fine real-time control of its generative processes and interaction strategies, closer in this case to a “smart” digital instrument. An offspring of the Omax system, conceived at the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique, the Somax2 environment is part of the European Research Council Raising Cocreativity in Cyber-Human Musicianship (REACH) project, which studies distributed creativity as a general template for symbiotic interaction between humans and digital systems. It fosters mixed musical reality involving cocreative AI agents. The REACH project puts forward the idea that cocreativity in cyber-human systems results from the emergence of complex joint behavior, produced by interaction and featuring cross-learning mechanisms. Somax2 is a first step toward this ideal, and already shows life-size achievements. This article describes Somax2 extensively, from its theoretical model to its system architecture, through its listening and learning strategies, representation spaces, and interaction policies.

Abstract The problem of target-based computer-aided orchestration is a recurring topic in the contemporary music community. Because of its complexity, computer-aided orchestration remains a partially unsolved problem and several systems have been developed in the last twenty years. This article presents a practical overview of the recently introduced Orchidea framework for dynamic computer-aided target-based orchestration. Orchidea continues the line of tools dedicated to the subject (the so-called Orchid* family) originally developed at the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique in Paris. Unlike its predecessors, Orchidea uses a combination of optimization techniques that include stochastic matching pursuit, long short-term memory neural networks, and monoobjective evolutionary optimization, with a specifically designed cost function. Symbolic constraints can be integrated in the cost function, and temporally evolving sounds are handled by segmenting them into a set of static targets optimized jointly and then connected. Orchidea is deployed in three different ways: a standalone application, designed to streamline a simplified compositional workflow; a Max package, targeted at composers willing to connect target-based orchestration to the more general area of computer-aided composition; and a set of command-line tools, mostly intended for research purposes and batch processing. The main aim of this article is to present an overview of such software systems and show several instances of the Orchidea framework's application in recent musical productions, tracing the path for future research on the subject.

La recherche vise à tracer un parcours comparatif sur le plan esthétique et historique entre la production musicale du CSC de Padoue (Centro di Sonologia Computazionale dell'Università di Padova) et de l'IRCAM de Paris (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique) pendant les années 1975-1985. Dans la première partie l'ambiance culturelle et les étapes de la recherche technologique et de la production musicale des deux centres sont reconstruits. La deuxième partie aborde le problème de l'analyse de la musique informatique. Les méthodologies actuelles peuvent être définies d'un côté esthésiques, de l'autre poi͏̈étiques (considérant la définition de J. J. Nattiez). Partant de l'analyse des six œuvres produites au CSC et à l'Ircam (M. Graziani, Winter leaves, W. Motz, Sotto pressione, F. Razzi, Progetto secondo, J. Harvey, Mortuos plango, vivos voco, J. C. Risset, Inharmonique), la thèse cherche à réunir ces deux approches dans une méthode cohérente. Le but est de parvenir à une proposition de méthodologie qui prétend de la part de l'analyste une connaissance profonde des logiciels employés, associée au regard détaché d'auditeur. Ce trait commun permet de définir des critères de comparaison pour juger les différents approches à la musique par ordinateur<br>This research is an esthetical and historical study of the musical production at CSC in Padova (Centro di Sonologia Computazionale dell'Università di Padova) and at IRCAM in Paris (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique) from 1975 to 1985. The first part introduces cultural aspects, research, technology and musical results of the two centers. The second part focuses on the problem of computer music analysis. The actual methods can be classified in two approaches: esthesic and poietic (as defined by J. J. Nattiez). Considering six works produced at CSC and at IRCAM (M. Graziani, Winter leaves, W. Motz, Sotto pressione, F. Razzi, Progetto secondo, J. Harvey, Mortuos plango, vivos voco, J. C. Risset, Inharmonique), my research combines these methods for understanding the relationship among the composer style, the technology employed by the composer and the actual piece of music. The aim is to determine a methodology which asks to the analyst a deep knowledge of the software used in the pieces, linked with his impersonal, as much as it's possible, listening. The six pieces use MUSIC software for sound synthesis. This type of programs, common within the musical research in Padova and Paris, has been chosen to permit a comparison of the two Centers' works and to trace a method to evaluate different approaches to computer music

Abstract Already a formed composer upon his arrival in France in 1989, Edmund Campion began working with Gérard Grisey and interacting with other key figures and institutions in the Paris contemporary music scene. Beset by the powerful and contradictory forces shaping musical life in Paris at the time, Campion pursued an independent musical project, one that embedded many influences from the so-called spectral school. With a growing interest in computer-assisted composition, he was drawn to Gérard Grisey's overall thinking and practice, particularly his approach to time in music. Campion undertook a reworking of his musical identity, integrating some of the ideas and techniques of Grisey, while immersing himself in the rich musical communities throughout Paris. His music transformed in unexpected ways as he sought to translate and synthesize new influences. He describes his experiences and compositional transformations within the context of the confluence of competing musical concerns represented by the Paris Conservatory, the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM), and Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM).

Abstract Michael Daugherty finds much of his inspiration in American pop culture; one has only to glance at the titles in his catalogue to see the “connections. Metropolis Symphony (based on Superman) and Elvis Everywhere (for string quartet and tape) are prime examples, as is Daugherty’s opera Jackie 0, commissioned by the Houston Grand Opera and described at its1997 premiere as “a window on American celebrity culture of the 1960s, ‘70s, and ‘sos:’ Daugherty was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. As a boy he studied classical piano, played percussion in a drum and bugle corps, and formed a funk band with his four younger brothers. He attended North Texas State University and the Manhattan School of Music and spent a year in Paris studying at IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et de Coordination Acoustique/Musique, France’s institute for musical research). He also studied with jazz arranger and composer Gil Evans, with Gyorgy Ligeti, and with Earle Brown, Jacob Druckman, Bernard Rands, and Roger Reynolds at Yale, where he earned a doctorate.
