Abstract (sommario):
This article reports on Connecting Museums: leadership, innovation and education in Science Museums, an international conference involving three university museums: Museu de Ciências e Tecnologia da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (MCT-PUCRS), the Great North Museum: Hancock (GNM), at Newcastle University (NU), and the Oxford University Museum of Natural History (OUMNH). The partnership started with a project to develop a joint exhibition on the theme of evolution organised by MCT-PUCRS and GNM, supported by the British Council’s Newton Fund (Institutional Skills 2016). The two museums shared the project at the UK University Museums Group (UMG) conference in 2016, where it came to the attention of colleagues at OUMNH. Following the UMG conference, the leadership and education teams of the three museums opened a dialogue to exchange knowledge and experience on leadership, innovation and education in science museums. This culminated in the first Connecting Museums conference in Porto Alegre, Brazil in October 2017. The conference was attended by 81 professionals, researchers, undergraduate and graduate students with interests in museology, the natural sciences and related areas. Abstract The museum sector has changed in the past decades, becoming for dynamic, diverse, interactive, participative and innovative. All this shifts make museums more and more appealing and increase the level of satisfaction of museum visits. Understanding to what degree the public perceives and appreciate these trends, could give museum management hints to better fit their development strategies to the audience. Generally, perceptions are very important for appealing organizations. This is valid also for museums. Museum’s image influences the audience’s satisfaction. Perceptions are important for successful museum visits in many ways. Having this is mind, the present study investigates how participative and innovative are considered Romanian museums.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT: Museums are undergoing changes, new roles are created for, and new challenges are posed to those institutions. After years of criticism levelled by society and academia at museums for the closed manner in which they ran and interpreted collections, a transformation is now underway. The decolonization of ethnographic museums has made major advances, especially because this type of museum is currently being indigenized. Museal communication plays a key role both in decolonization and indigenization, because it fosters dialogue between museum professionals and indigenous people. The article describes situations where museums, which are undergoing a transition between different models, are analyzed by Communication, considering the move from the means to mediation, in other words, from museums to culture, specifically the cultures of the Kaingang, Terenaand and Guarani Nhandeva indigenous people who live in the west of the state of São Paulo. The results of the museal communication initiative show two aspects to be explored by museums: The collection management policy and the renewed sacralization of museums. Keywords: Indigenous people in the west of the state of São Paulo; Museum policies; Decolonizing Museums.

Abstract (sommario):
The debate on the museum definition undertaken at the 2019 Kyoto ICOM General Conference points to the role played contemporarily by museums and the expectations they have to meet. It also results as a consequence of changes happening in museums beginning as of the 19th century until today. Extremely important processes took place in the past century. Initially, the changes covered the museum operating methods, mainly within museum education and display, however, they also had an impact on the status of objects in museum collections in the context of artistic and ethnographic collections. One of the most interesting ideas for museum’s redefinition was that proposed in the 1st half of the 20th c. in the formula of Museums of Artistic Culture. However, the departure from the traditionally conceived museum towards a ‘laboratory of modernity’ proposed by the Russian Avant-garde was still too revolutionary for its times. Beginning as of the 1960s, next to the reflection on museums’ operating modes, there increased the emphasis on the role they played and the one they should play in modern society. It was phenomena of political, social or economic character that had a direct impact on the transformation of the shape of museums, these phenomena appearing under the banners of globalization, liberalization, democratization, glocalization. Criticism of museums and their up-to-then praxes drew attention to the essential character of the relation between the institution and its public. The turn towards society allowed for such formats to appear as an ecomuseum, participatory museum, open museum. The solutions derived from the New Museology not only point to the necessity to move the level of the relationship between museum and society, but first and foremost to reflect on museum’s activity which is assumed to create an institution maximally transparent and ethical. It is for various reasons that not all the solutions proposed by museums meet the criteria. Museums continue to face numerous challenges, yet they boast potential to face them.

Abstract (sommario):
The article presents some analytical results of Udmurtia museums’ work in connection with the processes of globalization. A museum, as a sociocultural institution of society, reacts and feels changes in the world that change the museum's space, and finds other forms of interaction with libraries, archives, universities and research institutes. Informatization as an integral part of globalization has changed the accounting, storage and presentation of historical, cultural and natural heritage to a visitor in domestic museums, including in Udmurtia. Public attention is focused not only on material, but also on intangible objects. Museums of the Udmurt Republic are part of the unified electronic museum space of Russia and the world, where there is an opportunity to join the great cultural achievements of all mankind. Globalization opens up new opportunities for visitors to access the museum's collections and research into the material and spiritual culture of mankind. Museums of Udmurtia are closely connected with the phenomenon of globalization. Based on the use of SHOT analyses to evaluate the activities of the state museums of the Udmurt Republic, the prospects for development are outlined. Some aspects of Udmurtia museums activities are analyzed: informatization of museum environment, new forms of communication and the role of philanthropists and patrons. Museums develop modern forms of communication, introduce multimedia resources, use interactive technologies, successfully develop and participate in projects, and provide visitors with disabilities with group and individual classes - master classes. Museum employees develop special programs for working with such visitors. Udmurtia museums strive to be open to all visitors. Museum community presents successful projects in the field of preservation and study of historical and cultural heritage to Russia and the world. In the process of globalization, museums in Russian society remain a traditional institution where you can see authentic exhibits of history and culture, feel the power of their impact on the thoughts and feelings of a person. It is this educational aspect that makes a museum different from other institutions of society.

Abstract (sommario):
Libraries can easily be integrated into a museum’s activities, since museums too have functions that require the processing of information, such as preservation, research and communication. However museums in Turkey were not notable for developing efficient art libraries until Istanbul Museum of Modern Art opened. The distinctiveness of this museum’s library results from a change in the museum environment in Turkey, and the introduction of a number of features that are new in art libraries in this country.

Abstract (sommario):
The article presents a qualitative analysis of museum educational products. These products have been studied in terms of the possibility of their use in formal, non-formal and informal education. Thus, the role of the museum as an actor of continuing education has been determined. The role of continuing education in the educational process is becoming more obvious for most participants, and informal education plays a huge role in this process. It is urgent now to develop high-quality educational environment. Due to museums and their offline and online educational products, it is possible to get success. The author analyzed educational activities of leading Russian and foreign museums. As a result, the possibilities of museums as an educational institution for formal, non-formal and informal education were determined. Formal education is characterized by the network interaction of educational organizations and museums when the museum educational resources are included in the educational process. The largest number of museum educational products in traditional and innovative forms is made for non-formal or supplementary education. The traditional forms of museum educational resources include excursions, game formats for acquaintance with the exposition/exhibition (quests), museum master classes, interactive classes, as well as offline continuing education programs for a professional audience. The innovative forms include intra-museum programs, for example, performances, thematic classes within the museum’s profile, and Internet resources such as pages of official museum sites, online academies of museums, museum groups on social media, official museum channels on YouTube, webinars, virtual museums. Thus, non-formal educations could be in onsite or online training forms. Informal education can apply the museum’s resources both in traditional forms and in an innovative one. The museum online resources such as online museum games, massive open online courses (MOOC), and podcasts have the highest priority in this area. Museums and universities cooperate to get high-quality competitive educational online resources. In conclusion, it is possible to speak about a new stage in the development of museum educational activity. This stage is characterized by increasing attention to professional education by adding formal and non-formal (supplementary) educational programs, and, simultaneously, increasing the role of informal education due to online technology. It should be emphasized that museum staff could develop museum educational products for formal and non-formal education independently, but it is advisable for museums to intensify cooperation with universities to enter the online education market.

Abstract (sommario):
A museum is the destination of the crystallization of history and culture, and a museum is the center for the development of heritage culture. The display and exhibition of historical relics can promote the harmonious development of society. However, there are many defects in traditional museums. The collection in the museum is scattered. The exhibition needs a specific time and place to open, and the exhibition mode is boring and lacks entertainment, which seriously limits the museum’s dissemination of history and culture. In order to improve the public’s number of visits, museums need to keep pace with the times. Using augmented reality technology can digitize the information in the museum and integrate it with the user’s real environment, which solves the limitation of time and space for most users to visit the museum, and greatly increases the entertainment of users to visit the museum. In addition, the application of blockchain technology in digital museums can effectively ensure the security of museum cultural relics data and quickly restore the lost cultural relics information. The digital museum can help tourists realize cross-region viewing. Through multimedia software and hardware, it can greatly stimulate tourists’ interest and attract tourists of different ages to visit. This article uses digital technology to present physical museums in a digital form on the network, but it is difficult for digital museums to conduct targeted analysis on tourists of different ages. This article will analyze the attraction ability of digital museums to tourists of different ages, thereby attracting tourists of different ages to visit. This paper compared traditional museums with digital museums based on augmented reality technology and blockchain technology. The experimental results showed that from the perspective of young people, the average interactivity of traditional museums and digital museums was 47.20% and 78.20%, respectively; from the perspective of the elderly, the average interactivity of traditional museums and digital museums was 59.04% and 70.36%, respectively. Therefore, the digital museum built by using augmented reality technology and blockchain technology can effectively improve the interaction with users. The digital museum can improve the interaction with tourists of different ages, attract a large number of tourists for virtual visits, and improve the cultural transmission and economic development of the digital museum.

Abstract (sommario):
The contemporary museum debate developing in the context of the need to change the museum definition carried out in ICOM is a debate on the role and responsibility of museums. Museums with a burden of tradition are faced with the challenge to meet contemporary contexts and expectations, while newly-established museums can enter the stage fully aware of the historical contexts, with an agenda reflecting contemporary tasks, and they can chart new perspectives from the very beginning. The case study in the paper focuses on a museum which begins its operation at the time of a heated debate on the new tasks of museums in social life: the Toy Museum in Cracow. The paper tackles several motifs of a very extensive issue, namely museums’ responsibility: who and what should museums show responsibility to? Does responsibility mean presence in the public debate and museum activism? The operation formula of the Toy Museum shows the possible way for private collectors: instead of aspiring to create a traditional place for the collection presentation, they can see how to activate the collection where the supreme goal is not just making the collection available to the public, but making it impact the museum’s environment, which could be caused by that presentation and other programmatic actions connected with the collection.

Museums convincingly achieves the aim of giving a general summary of the key themes of the museum’s history. The author does not fail in missing a point: he offers a comprehensive history of museums from the ancient world to contemporary times, focusing on well-known historical examples of museum collections taken from different parts of the world and on contemporary subjects of debate in the museum world, producing a valuable synthesis of this wide topic. I recommend this book to museum studies students interested in the history of museums, but also to scholars who would like to have a complete and valuable summary of the subject.

Barker, Lesley Aileen Pendleton. "Repurposing museum interpretation in American historic house museums". Thesis, University of Leicester, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/41082.

Abstract (sommario):
To investigate whether the American historic house museum sector preserves evidence of past inter-cultural encounters that could increase its relevance to today’s scholars and audiences, I charged a seven-member team made up of members from different ethnic, socio-economic, educational and generational backgrounds to visit and produce photographs at three historic house museums in St. Louis, Missouri. The photo-voice data was created, gathered, and submitted by the participant team members at the height of the social unrest triggered by Ferguson and the Black Lives Matter movement. It argues for the relevance and sustainability of the historic house museum sector as a venue for the development of new approaches to understanding past intercultural encounters and, in fact, to suggest redesigning the way museum interpretation is practiced. The visual data provided by the participant team for this dissertation demonstrates how people bring their own perspectives to respond to, critique, question and embrace what the museum asserts and displays about past inter-cultural encounters. The research suggests that the museum has the potential to shift its interpretive role and practice from knowledge broker and expert to become an interpretive space where new hermeneutics-informed understanding in the tradition of Gadamer continually emerges iteratively through the interaction invited between the museum, its content, and the various members of its audiences. It argues that, if the museum is to remain relevant, especially in particularly difficult moments, it has to provide a space to honor and respectfully both solicit and receive the voices, understandings, and even the pain experienced by each member of the affected community.

This thesis is a reflection on the making o Brazilian History writings in museums since the 1920s, a central moment for the establishment of a republican 'pedagogy of nationality' based on museal support. Some of the political-pedagogic efforts of those institutions were observed in order to understand the chief characteristics of an educational paradigm for historical knowledge in museums. Thus, the analysis of civic celebrations, guides and expositions allowed an approximation of the memorial activations of museum actors, with special attention to the continuities, negotiations and transformations o the projects, particularly in their pedagogic dimension. Mariano Procópio Museum was chosen as a case study both due to its specificities, which leads us to understand the 'concert' of national museums from the countryside, and to the relevance of its collection and the intensity of educational actions developed under the Geralda Armond management (1944-1980). The Armond management in the center of this thesis, marked by the defense of institutional continuity and of the framing of the Lage family memory; by the struggle of the material maintenance of the museum, with a close approximation to the civilian and military regime; and by the search for the professionalization of personnel and for dynamism in actions. The results highlight the multiplicity and fragility of the museum’s identity formation, associated to the fact that it is a 'municipal' museum. A situation which explains, at least in part, its oblivion in the national scene, despite its expressive collection and its articulation with the school system, through the strengthening of the civic sense of its pedagogic actions.

Abstract (sommario):
The cry for decolonization has echoed throughout the museum world. Although perhaps most audibly heard in the case of ethnographic museums, many different types of museums have felt the need to engage in decolonial practices. Amidst those who have argued that an institution as deeply colonial as the museum cannot truly be decolonized, museum staff and museologists have been approaching the issue from different angles to practice decoloniality in any way they can. This book collects a wide range of practices from museums whose audiences, often highly diverse, come together in sometimes contentious conversations about pasts and futures. Although there are no easy or uniform answers as to how best to deal with colonial pasts, this collection of practices functions as an accessible toolkit from which museum staff can choose in order to experiment with and implement methods according to their own needs and situations. The practices are divided thematically and include, among others, methods for decentering, improving transparency, and increasing inclusivity.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractVisits to museums in the twenty-first century do not merely involve coming in contact with art but also living an interactive and relational experience that has changed the organization of museums, not only the exhibition rooms but also other museum spaces: boutiques, cafés, restaurants, and public areas. This new type of visit implies the role of an original agent: the frontalier visitor who, by inhabiting spaces adjacent to exhibition rooms, expands and reinforces the museum’s boundaries and the museum experience itself. This work is focused on visitors’ footprints as material and virtual marks and aims at showing the results of a field analysis carried out from 2017 to 2019 addressing the architecture of modern art museums. Fourteen museums have been analyzed, and four of them have been selected as the main objects of analysis: Malba, Moma, Tate Modern, and Centre Pompidou. We have studied their façades, esplanades, and entrance halls as spaces advancing what the public will experience inside the buildings. This analysis considers these adjacent spaces essential for the pass-through from the material experience to the virtual experience and from material footprints to virtual ones.

Abstract (sommario):
Virtual environments have been extensively utilized in museums. During the COVID-19 pandemic, museums in China, both primary and secondary, organized virtual exhibition halls and digital collection retrieval functions. These efforts played a crucial role in facilitating public engagement with traditional culture. However, post-pandemic, public interest in online museums has significantly waned, highlighting the limitations of virtual museums in representing intangible cultural heritage. This study introduces an audience-centered approach to virtual museum design, specifically tailored to the features of intangible cultural heritage such as folk songs and dances. It incorporates Kano, AHP and AD design theories to develop the museum's virtual exhibition method. The process began with identifying 207 audience needs through research, which were then classified using the Kano model. The AHP method was employed to determine the relative importance of various user needs, emphasizing information collection, preservation, display and viewing modes, visual aesthetics, entertainment, public education, and social attributes in virtual museums. To align the design parameters of the virtual museum, the study established a mapping between the museum's functional domain and the design domain, guided by the AD theory's principle of independence. This facilitated a step-by-step evaluation of perceptual and rational solutions through a matrix, clarifying the functional scope and design methods for the virtual museum. This research offers valuable insights for virtual museum design and development, providing a reference for future virtual space projects and enhancing the representation of intangible cultural heritage in digital formats.

Abstract (sommario):
Museums are institutions that carry on the cultural and artistic treasures of societies to future generations. Economic social, cultural and philosophical thoughts in the world have changed the understanding of museology. At the beginning of the 20th century, modern architects brought new expansions to classical museum typology. In the 1970s, museums began to draw attention as the city's landmark and meeting points. Along with the museums, courtyards, squares and gardens, which are open spaces of museums, have also changed. By joining the city life, they became new social attraction centers. Museums and museum open space from Turkey and the world in the study areas, classified under the headings of traditional and contemporary, will be analyzed under the headings of form, style, material, elements of boundry, planting design, activities area, urban furniture, and function. In order to demonstrate the changing today’s museum’s open space; an analysis will be made using spatial experiences, observations, syntactic analysis technique. Study’s contribution to the literature will be determined by the design approaches of contemporary and traditional museum open spaces. As part of the museum identity and character, it will be pointed out that the open spaces of the museum are as important as the design of the museum buildings.

Abstract (sommario):
Museum of the University of Bucharest represents the cultural memory and the institutional identity in the specific field of higher education in Romania. But this mission needs to be adapted to the public nowadays, in cultural contexts that are different from those of the last century, when the museum was founded. The impact of an university museum in society is increasingly based on the diversification of communication paths, with the use of the new media, on the development of new audiences for whom the museum's message is relevant. Also, the university museum must investigate future development directions and opportunities, to be a dynamic and vivid institution. The 21st Century brings with it new and increasingly complex methods of communication for all University Museums, especially ones that allow the public to manage their intellectual needs in their own, customized way. That being said, we're talking about communication through the museum's institutional site, via the various social media platforms, through the online catalogue and portal, which grant access to information regarding the museum's collection. Other interactive elements developed in the 21st century are represented by QR codes, by virtual or augmented reality, these digital breakthroughs being a way for museums not only to attract new types of public, but also to complete the information by making it multisensorial. Our research shows how the aspects mentioned above and others represent the challenges to which the University of Bucharest Museum had to find adequate answers in order to fulfill its mission.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose –The purpose of this study is to identify the criteria for sustainable museums found in reference literature and specified in our research, and to suggest guidelines for museums to follow. Methodology –In our primary research, the criteria for a sustainable museum were interpreted along four pillars, for which in-depth expert interviews were conducted with Hungarian museum professionals. Semi-structured interviews were used to explore the viewpoints, expectations, and perceptions of museum staff. Findings – In terms of environmental sustainability, Hungarian contemporary museums place less emphasis on making the museum building itself more sustainable. However, it is worthwhile for institutions that have long-term plans to become more and more eco-friendly. The issue of economic sustainability is the most problematic for Hungarian museums, which can be greatly improved with an active support community that helps museums either through volunteer work or financially. From a social point of view, one of the most important tasks of museums is to ensure equal opportunities, to reach the widest possible range of people, which is facilitated if the museum can function as a community space that adequately involves museum visitors and if it continuously strengthens its role in education. In terms of cultural sustainability, the responsibilities of museums are collection management, maintaining quality, and artistic vitality. Contribution – We conceptualize and provide a framework for sustainable museums. Through our research, we have contributed to broadening the theoretical background of sustainable museums from the perspective of contemporary art museums.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper was adapted from the author’s PhD dissertation named “The Effects of Digitalization on Contemporary Art Museums and Galleries”. The digital age has started with the digitalization of information and information communication. The digitalization processes that accelerated with the rapid developments in information and communication technologies have deeply affected museums. Museums are information-based organizations, their primary functions are to protect and spread information. Digitalized information and information communication have obligated contemporary art museums to follow digitalization processes. In this process, technological convergence is another factor that accelerates digitalization of contemporary art museums. ICOM has defined a contemporary museum as a polyphonic platform including participatory, inclusive and democratizing elements. When all these concepts are considered, the importance of communication between museum-community becomes apparent. Today, contemporary art museums have taken communication to their focal points. Museum-society communication is experienced in contemporary art museums through artistic activities as well as institution's communication-oriented strategies. Contemporary art activities using digital technologies and multimedia technologies generally require audience participation. Global access and various digital platforms provide the society with equal access to museums and art events, as well as making the arts of various countries and identities more visible. In the field of education, contemporary art museums develop projects by cooperating with various institutions. The effective use of digital platforms and institutional pages serves as a catalyst in the realization of these roles that museums undertake. Innovations in information and communication technologies accelerate the digitalization processes and serve as a mediator in maintaining the social roles of museums. For example, it can be said that technological convergence increases the number of museum visitors, therefore, it is the mediator of the social roles of museums. Technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality and artificial intelligence, which are used in exhibition design in museums, require audience interaction. Digital art based on digital technology takes its place in contemporary art museums. In this study, it was aimed to reveal that social roles undertaken by contemporary art museums, such as participatory, inclusive, democratizing and polyphonic roles, are closely related to the digitalization of institutions and that digitalization acts as a catalyst for these roles.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper aims to deepen some characteristics of the digitalization process in Italian museums. In particular, it aims at investigating the role of non-technical employees in such a process. Our research is qualitative and explorative. Three Italian museums, selected through convenient sampling, have been investigated through a longitudinal approach. The study points out the relevance of participatory, emergent, and mainly informal processes aimed at developing the museum’s digital skills. The findings shed new light on the role of non-technical employees in fostering digitalization, thanks to autonomously developed learning processes. These are combined with the willingness to enhance employees’ skills and ideas by museum managers. This approach can be viewed as an alternative or supplement to the development of digital skills through the inclusion of specialized roles (e.g.: digital manager). Some significant theoretical and managerial implications are highlighted, as well as some future lines of research.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – The paper is dedicated to the marketing of Rijeka museums. It presents the research that encompassed a) museum professionals’ marketing knowledge and skills and their implementation in practice b) core and additional services offered by museums c) museum professionals’ opinions and attitudes about the new trends in museum marketing. Methodology – Exploratory research was conducted. Data for the theoretical foundations were collected from secondary scientific sources and by searching the websites, social networks, and promotional materials. Qualitative research in the form of in-depth, semi-structured personal interviews with key informants was performed to collect primary data. Findings – The level of familiarity with the services marketing in Rijeka museums was low, pointing to a lack of marketing professionals. Nevertheless, the need for marketing was recognised, and museums were striving to implement some generic marketing activities. The core services (exhibitions and/or collections of materials) showed predominant product orientation, with insufficient orientation on a visitor. Opinions and attitudes of interviewees on museum marketing trends were positive. However, museums could not include new content despite wishes due to the lack of capacity. Furthermore, the legal frame prevented expanding the offer of a souvenir shop. Contribution – Although the research was conducted before the onset of the pandemic, the paper provides theoretical insights and practical suggestions, which could help academics and professionals to understand better and deal with the potential opportunities and threats in museum marketing in the dramatically changing environmentns.

Abstract (sommario):
Due to the COVID-19 pandemics, the virtual space became relevant in teaching practice. It has been necessary to find new ideas to teach, being this the perfect setting where the virtual museum is seen as a space for teaching and learning. In today's digital ecosystem, there are many resources, so the educational application of these resources makes them interesting, exciting, and relevant. The research’s objective is to create a virtual museum articulated with the axes and areas of development and learning of the national curriculum of Ecuador for pre-school children and to analyze the effects on the teaching-learning process. With the opening and democratization of the knowledge of these cultural centers, it is possible to create synchronous and asynchronous learning experiences and explore fine arts world by selecting artworks, figures and objects that allow meaningful learning. The methodological design of this study is based on the qualitative-quantitative paradigm, with the participation of teachers and pre-school children, integrating collection, analysis and interpretation of quantitative and qualitative data, as well as experts’ criteria about the subject, which allowed obtaining data concerning the use of virtual museums and the applicability of relevant interactive resources. With the focus group technique, 30 children aged 4 to 5 years old expressed their opinions, feelings, and experiences, generating an enriching debate about users’ experience in the virtual museum. The design of the museum was developed on a platform that allowed the creation of a guided visit circuit similar to that of a physical museum, where the teacher becomes a mediator and interpreter of this new virtual museology focused on the user. The results are encouraging with a pertinent design and according to the national curricular logic. Promoting the use of other non-formal spaces, highlighting the importance of cultural centers use such as physical or virtual museums and routes as well as city or world’s corners to develop learning sessions, and expanding the scope of visits to the physical and virtual museums in a kind of hybrid didactics will be the subjects of this research.

Abstract (sommario):
The Global Engagement of Museums in Canada examines Canadian museum diplomacy, assessing the international activities of Canadian museums to consider the ways these institutions act as cultural diplomats on the global stage. The report presents the results of a multi-partner collaborative research project addressing the work of ten institutions, including the Art Gallery of Alberta; Aga Khan Museum; Canadian Museum of History; Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21; Montreal Museum of Fine Arts; Museum of Anthropology at UBC; National Gallery of Canada; Ottawa Art Gallery; Pointe-à-Callière, Montréal Archaeology and History Complex; and the Royal Ontario Museum. Focusing on the period of 2009 to 2019, this report highlights new activities and methods within museum practice, while also grounding these within the context of developments in the last decade. Drawing on archival research, document analysis, and interviews with museum professionals, this research establishes baseline data on the global reach of Canadian museums and identifies best practices to share with the museum sector and cultural diplomacy community. Comprised of three sections, the report begins by presenting the framework for the project, explaining the logic behind the selection of institutions and the pedagogical considerations that informed our collective methodology. Second, the report provides a review of the literature in the field of cultural diplomacy, situating the research project. And third, the core of the project, are ten studies of specific institutions, drawn from the fieldwork conducted by the team. These institutional reports demonstrate the ways in which museums engage with a range of global activities and actors. They further address developing trends in the sector, while also suggesting future avenues for research. The Global Engagement of Museums in Canada is a research project led by Primary Investigators Jeffrey Brison and Sarah E.K. Smith. Funded by a Mitacs Accelerate Grant, the initiative is a collaboration between the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Queen’s University.

Abstract (sommario):
The research is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of mediatization of art on the example of virtual museums. Main objective of the study is to give communication characteristics of the mediatized socio-cultural institutions. The subject of the research is forms, directions and communication features of virtual museums. Methodology. In the process of study, the method of communication analysis, which allowed to identify and characterize the main factors of the museum’s functioning as a communication system, was used. Among them, special emphasis is put on receptive and metalinguistic functions. Results / findings and conclusions. The need to be competitive in the information space determines the gradual transformation of socio-cultural institutions into mass media, which is reflected in the content and forms of dialogue with recipients. When cultural institutions begin to function as media, they take on the features of media structures that create a communication environment localized by the functions of communicators and audience expectations. Museums function in such a way that along with the real art space they form a virtual space, which puts the recipients into the reality of the exhibitions based on the principle of immersion. Mediaization of art on the example of virtual museum institutions allows us to talk about: expanding of the perceptual capabilities of the audience; improvement of the exposition function of mediatized museums with the help of Internet technologies; interactivity of museum expositions; providing broad contextual background knowledge necessary for a deep understanding of the content of works of art; the possibility to have a delayed viewing of works of art; absence of thematic, time and space restrictions; possibility of communication between visitors; a huge target audience. Significance. The study of the mediatized forms of communication between museums and visitors as well as the directions of their transformation into media are certainly of interest to the scientific field of “Social Communications”.
