Abstract (sommario):
Inductor–capacitor (LC) passive wireless sensors are widely used for remote sensing. These devices are limited in applications where multiparameter sensing is required, because of the mutual coupling between neighboring sensors. This article presents two effective decoupling techniques for multiparameter sensing, based on partially overlapped sensors and decoupling coils, which, when combined, reduce the mutual coupling between sensors to near zero. A multiparameter LC sensor prototype with these two decoupling mechanisms has been designed, simulated, and measured. This prototype is capable of simultaneously measuring four parameters. The measurements demonstrate that the changes in capacitance in one individual sensor do not affect the measurements of the other sensors. This principle has been applied to simultaneous wear sensing using four identical wear sensors.

Abstract (sommario):
<span>Real-time transmission of biomedical signals is immensely challenging and requires cloud and internet of things (IoT) infrastructure. Security is also an important factor; however, to accomplish this, a reconstruction method is developed in which the entire signal is supplied as an input, the primary portion is considered here, and the signal is further encoded and transmitted to the destination. Electrocardiogram (ECG) compression for the lightweight wireless network is quite challenging for long-term healthcare monitoring. Compressed sensing (CS) involves efficient encoding mechanisms for error rate estimation for reconstruction and energy consumption for wireless transmission of data. We propose a multi-task compressed sensing (MT-CS) reconstruction mechanism in this study for ECG compression of data is most chosen for a wireless network system that has various sensors embedded in it. This model further extracts the essential adaptive features for correlation existing in the ECG signals. The performance of the proposed MT-CS reconstruction mechanism is evaluated on the multiparameter intelligent monitoring in intensive care (MIMIC-II) dataset, which ensures its robustness and generalization. The results obtained upon simulation ensure that the proposed MT-CS based reconstruction approach ensures excellent reconstruction signal with fewer measurements in comparison with the existing state-of-art CS techniques.</span>

Abstract (sommario):
A close correlation between CO2 concentration and aerosol enables the wide utilization of CO2 concentration as a good representation of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus-2 infection airborne transmission. On the other side, many indoor air-quality monitoring devices have been developed for indoor monitoring applications. However, most of them are multiparameter air-quality sensor systems and tend to consume relatively high power, are relatively large devices, and are fairly expensive; therefore, they not meet the requirement for indoor monitoring applications. This paper presents a smart wireless sensor node that can measure and monitor CO2 concentration levels. The node was designed to meet the requirements of indoor air-quality monitoring applications by considering several factors, such as compact size, low cost, and low power, as well as providing real-time, continuous, reliable, and remote measurement. Furthermore, the commercial off-the-shelf and low-power consumption components are chosen to fit with the low-cost development and reduce energy consumption. Moreover, a low-power algorithm and cloud-based data logger also were applied to minimize the total power consumption. This power strategy was applied as a preliminary development toward an autonomous sensor node. The node has a compact size and consumes low energy for one cycle of CO2 measurement, accompanied by high accuracy with very low measurement error. The experiment result revealed the node could measure and monitor in real-time continuous, reliable, and remote CO2 concentration levels in indoor and outdoor environments. A user interface visualizes CO2 concentration graphically and numerically using the Adafruit platform for easy accessibility over the Internet of Things. The developed node is very promising and suitable for indoor CO2 monitoring applications with the acquired data that could be utilized as an indicator to minimize the risk of indoor Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus-2 airborne transmission.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction. The relevance of work is due to the need for constructive transformation of the AАEE-7 multi-block measuring system into a mono-block one. This is required for microclimate research in livestock premises, according to the methodological provisions. The work on the development of a laboratory sample of a mono-block analyzer is being carried out in Ukraine for the first time. The purpose of the research was to implement a method of continuous automatic recording of measurements of the microclimate of livestock premises. In addition, it was supposed to reduce the cost and reduce the number of technical means of measurement. It was also supposed to simplify the process of setting up measurements to increase the productivity of scientists and technologists. Research methods. Analytical, mathematical, physical, economic research methods are applied. In addition, the methods of designing and programming electronic devices are applied. On the basis of previous developments and materials of scientific works of periodical publications, the advantages of the measuring system "Analyzer of air environment electronic mono-block" (AАEE-M) are substantiated. A laboratory sample of the device with software was made (developer Cherkasy Research Station of Bioresources NAAS). The algorithm of the multiparameter method of continuous automatic registration and assessment of the microclimate of premises using AАEE-M has been developed. Research results. It was determined that the devices of the main Ukrainian manufacturers PJSC "Ukranalit" and LLC "Complex Automated Systems" and foreign companies "Delta Ohm" and "Luma Sense Technologies A/S" do not fully meet the requirements of microclimate monitoring, according to the existing methodology. The main innovative advantage of AАEE-M is the possibility of automatic registration of daily fluctuations of at least ten parameters of the microclimate, with a time interval of 6 minutes. This applies, in particular, to small particles of suspended dust of PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 fractions and low volumetric concentrations of polluting gases CO2, NH3, H2S, CH4. The technical advantage of the measuring system is based on the fact that it is characterized by a 30 % lower mass compared to the Ecolab prototype. In addition, it has 9 times longer battery life, wireless communication, and the possibility of remote transmission of measurement results. Conclusions. For the operation of the AАEE-M measuring system, a methodology for assessing microclimate parameters using the method of continuous automatic registration has been developed. The economic advantage of AАEE-M is that it is 4.4 times cheaper compared to the prototype. Also, it is cheaper by 22.9 %, compared to the previous multi-block modification of the measuring system. Key words: measuring system, parametric, evaluation, microclimate, livestock premises, method of determination.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Conventional usage of multiparameter radar measurements for rainfall estimation has been associated with tracking the variability of the raindrop size distribution. The use of multiparameter radar measurements in a statistical framework to estimate rainfall is presented in this paper. The techniques developed in this paper are applied to the radar and rain gauge measurement of rainfall observed on 26 July 1991, during the Convection and Precipitation Electrification program. Conventional pointwise estimates of rainfall are also compared. The probability matching procedure, when applied to the radar and surface measurements shows that multiparameter radar algorithms can match the probability distribution functions better than the reflectivity based algorithms, thereby indicating the potential of multiparameter radar measurements for statistical approach to rainfall estimation.

Abstract (sommario):
Multiparameter quantum estimation is made difficult by the following three obstacles. First, incompatibility among different physical quantities poses a limit on the attainable precision. Second, the ultimate precision is not saturated until you discover the optimal measurement. Third, the optimal measurement may generally depend on the target values of parameters, and thus may be impossible to perform for unknown target states. We present a method to circumvent these three obstacles. A class of quantum statistical models, which utilizes antiunitary symmetries or, equivalently, real density matrices, offers compatible multiparameter estimations. The symmetries accompany the target-independent optimal measurements for pure-state models. Based on this finding, we propose methods to implement antiunitary symmetries for quantum metrology schemes. We further introduce a function which measures antiunitary asymmetry of quantum statistical models as a potential tool to characterize quantumness of phase transitions.

Abstract (sommario):
In this work, wavelengths were determined for the robust and simultaneous measurement of film thickness, urea concentration and fluid temperature. Film parameters such as film thickness, film temperature and the composition of the film are typically dynamically and interdependently changing. To gain knowledge of these quantities, a measurement method is required that offers a high temporal resolution while being non-intrusive so as to not disturb the film as well as the process conditions. We propose the extension of the FMLAS method, which was previously validated for the film thickness measurement of thin liquid films, to determine temperatures and concentrations using an adapted evaluation approach.

Abstract (sommario):
For energy-limited wireless sensor networks (WSNs), we propose a multiparameter fusion decision routing (MPFDR) algorithm in this study. This algorithm gives a comprehensive account of the residual energy and forward distance, single-hop transmission ratio, cache queue, and energy equilibrium degree. It calculates the routing evaluation parameters of the forward neighbors, realizing a multidirectional reflection of the network status. Simultaneously, combined with the defined routing selection strategy based on the parameter contribution degree and fuzzy contribution degree, the fusion contribution degree of each forward neighbor is obtained. Then, the node with the most considerable fusion contribution degree is selected as the next hop. Finally, the performance of the MPFDR algorithm is simulated and compared with other algorithms. Simulation results indicate that our algorithm has good congestion control ability in energy-limited wireless sensor networks and can significantly reduce the packet loss rate and average hops.

Abstract (sommario):
In the quest to unlock the maximum potential of quantum sensors, it is of paramount importance to have practical measurement strategies that can estimate incompatible parameters with best precisions possible. However, it is still not known how to find practical measurements with optimal precisions, even for uncorrelated measurements over probe states. Here, we give a concrete way to find uncorrelated measurement strategies with optimal precisions. We solve this fundamental problem by introducing a framework of conic programming that unifies the theory of precision bounds for multiparameter estimates for uncorrelated and correlated measurement strategies under a common umbrella. Namely, we give precision bounds that arise from linear programs on various cones defined on a tensor product space of matrices, including a particular cone of separable matrices. Subsequently, our theory allows us to develop an efficient algorithm that calculates both upper and lower bounds for the ultimate precision bound for uncorrelated measurement strategies, where these bounds can be tight. In particular, the uncorrelated measurement strategy that arises from our theory saturates the upper bound to the ultimate precision bound. Also, we show numerically that there is a strict gap between the previous efficiently computable bounds and the ultimate precision bound.

Abstract (sommario):
This commentary is focused on the requirements and general strategy of designing a multiparameter monitoring wrist-worn prototype. The solution is based on an innovative hardware approach to ensure the safety of working conditions through environmental parameter measurement. In some cases, exposure to environmental parameters for a long time can endanger an individual’s health (e.g., exposure to toxic gases or sound level beyond a certain threshold). Therefore, measuring the environmental elements can protect individuals’ health as well. In this work, we emphasize that a new approach and strategy in wearable devices, multiparameter monitoring, miniaturization, sensor integration, data fusion, and system adoption within the Internet of Things (IoT) is necessary according to today’s demands.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents a passive wireless measurement system based on wireless power transfer (WPT) technology. It does not require separate information and power transmission circuits. The data receiver only needs to send a short signal to the data collector through WPT, and then the information of the measured environment can be obtained by analyzing the feedback signal from the data collector. Three concepts are included in this system, namely (1) the constant oscillation period of oscillation attenuation waveforms; (2) the characteristics of inductive coupling WPT; and (3) the relationship between sensitive resistances and environmental parameters. It is very suitable for measuring the parameters in an internal or closed space. The data collector is small in size and simple in structure, and no power is needed. It has stable performance after implantation and can be used permanently. Results obtained from simulations and experiments are included. They verify the measurement process and measurement results meet the requirements of passive wireless measurement, and the measurement error is less than 1.5%.

Abstract (sommario):
A comprehensive multiparameter model is proposed for underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) channels to integrate the effects of absorption, scattering, and dynamic turbulence. The simulation accuracy is further improved by the combined use of the subharmonic method and the strict sampling constraint method by comparing the phase structure function with the theoretical value. The average light intensity and scintillation index are analyzed using the channel parameters of absorption, scattering, turbulence, flow velocity, and transmission distance. Under weak or medium turbulence, the bit error rate (BER) performance can be effectively improved by increasing the transmitting light power. The power penalty of a 50 m UWOC channel is 5.8 dBm from pure seawater to ocean water and 1.0 dBm from weak turbulence to medium turbulence, with the BER threshold of 10−6.

Abstract (sommario):
This work compares the performance of single- and two-qubit probes for estimating several phase rotations simultaneously under the action of different noisy channels. We compute the quantum limits for this simultaneous estimation using collective and individual measurements by evaluating the Holevo and Nagaoka–Hayashi Cramér-Rao bounds, respectively. Several quantum noise channels are considered, namely the decohering channel, the amplitude damping channel, and the phase damping channel. For each channel, we find the optimal single- and two-qubit probes. Where possible we demonstrate an explicit measurement strategy that saturates the appropriate bound and we investigate how closely the Holevo bound can be approached through collective measurements on multiple copies of the same probe. We find that under the action of the considered channels, two-qubit probes show enhanced parameter estimation capabilities over single-qubit probes for almost all non-identity channels, i.e., the achievable precision with a single-qubit probe degrades faster with increasing exposure to the noisy environment than that of the two-qubit probe. However, in sufficiently noisy channels, we show that it is possible for single-qubit probes to outperform maximally entangled two-qubit probes. This work shows that, in order to reach the ultimate precision limits allowed by quantum mechanics, entanglement is required in both the state preparation and state measurement stages. It is hoped the tutorial-esque nature of this paper will make it easily accessible.

The ASIC drives the measurement electrodes and performs amperometric measurements for determining the oxygen concentration, potentiometric measurements for evaluating the pH-level as well as temperature measurements. A 10-bit pipeline analog to digital (ADC) is used to digitize the acquired analog samples and is implemented as a single stage to reduce power consumption and chip area. For pH measurements, an offset subtraction technique is employed to raise the resolution to 12-bits. Charge integration is utilized for oxygen and temperature measurements with the capability to cover current ranges between 30 nA and 1 μA. In order to achieve good performance over a wide range of supply and process variations, internal reference voltages are generated from a programmable band-gap regulated circuit and biasing currents are supplied from a wide-range bootstrap current reference. To accommodate the limited available electrical power, all components are designed for low power operation. Also a sequential operation approach is applied, in which essential circuit building blocks are time multiplexed between different measurement types. All measurement sequences and parameters are programmable and can be adjusted for different tissues and media. The chip communicates with external unites through a full duplex two-wire Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), which receives operational instructions and at the same time outputs the internally stored measurement data. The circuit has been fabricated in a standard 0.5-μm CMOS process and operates on a supply as low as 2.7 V. Measurement results show good performance and agree with circuit simulation. It consumes a maximum of 500 μA DC current and is clocked between 500 kHz and 4 MHz according to the measurement parameters. Measurement results of the on-chip ADC show a Differential Non Linearity (DNL) lower than 0.5 LSB, an Integral Non Linearity (INL) lower than 1 LSB and a Figure of Merit (FOM) of 6 pJ/conversion.

Abstract (sommario):
As a submaximal exercise test, a 6-min walking test (6MWT) can be considered a suitable index for the exercise capacity of patients with a respiratory problem. Traditionally, medical staff manually collect cardiopulmonary information using different devices. However, no integrated monitoring system is currently available to simultaneously record the real-time breathing sound, heart rhythm, and precise walking information (i.e., walking distance, speed, and acceleration) during the 6MWT. In this study, a wearable and wireless multiparameter monitoring system is proposed to simultaneously monitor the breathing sound, oxygen saturation (SpO2), electrocardiograph (ECG) signals, and precise walking information during the 6MWT. Here, a wearable mechanical design was successfully used to reduce the effect of motion artifacts on the breathing sound and ECG signal. A multiparameter detection algorithm was designed to effectively estimate heart and breathing rates. Finally, the cardiopulmonary function of smokers was evaluated using the proposed system. The evaluation indicated that this system could reveal dynamic changes and differences in the breathing rate, heart rate, SpO2, walking speed, and acceleration during the 6MWT. The proposed system can serve as a more integrated approach to monitor cardiopulmonary parameters and obtain precise walking information simultaneously during the 6MWT.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the study is to develop a compact, robust and maintenance free gas concentration and humidity monitoring system for industrial use in the field of inert process gases. Our multiparameter gas-monitoring system prototype allows the simultaneous measurement of the fluid physical properties (density, viscosity) and water vapor content (at ppm level) under varying process conditions. This approach is enabled by the combination of functionalized and non-functionalized resonating microcantilevers in a single sensing platform. Density and viscosity measuring performance is evaluated over a wide range of gases, temperatures and pressures with non-functionalized microcantilevers. For the humidity measurement, microporous Y-type zeolite and mesoporous silica MCM48 are evaluated as sensing materials. An easily scalable functionalization method to high-throughput production is herein adopted. Experimental results with functionalized microcantilevers exposed to water vapor (at ppm level) indicate that frequency changes cannot be attributed to a mass effect alone, but also stiffness effects dependent on adsorption of water and working temperature must be considered. To support this hypothesis, the mechanical response of such microcantilevers has been modelled considering both effects and the simulated results validated by comparison against experimental data.

Abstract (sommario):
We report the development of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor for multiparameter sensing using only one FBG. The FBG was half-embedded in a 3D-printed structure, which resulted in a division of the grating spectrum creating two peaks with different sensitivities with respect to different physical parameters. A numerical analysis of the proposed technique was performed using the coupled-mode theory with modified transfer matrix formulation. Then, experimental analyses were performed as function of temperature, strain and force, where the peaks showed different sensitivities in all analyzed cases. Such results enable the application of a technique for simultaneous measurement of multiple physical parameters using both peaks and the full width half maximum of the FBG embedded in a 3D structure. In the simultaneous multiparameter assessment, the proposed sensor system was able to estimate the three tested parameters (strain, temperature and force) with relative errors as low as 4%.
