Abstract (sommario):
The stability of finite-amplitude weakly dispersive circularly polarized MHD wave trains with respect to oblique modulations is investigated. The mathematical model is a multi-dimensional extension of the DNLS equation. We have found that the right-hand-polarized wave, which is stable with respect to parallel modulations, is unstable with respect to certain oblique modulations for most primary wavenumbers.

Abstract (sommario):
The number of modulated structures with more than one modulation vector is small, and such structures often pose special problems in solving and refining. This talk will be concentrated on three such cases; The 3+4 dimensionally modulated cubic structure of digenite, the 3+2 dimensionally modulated structure of Cu3In2, the 3+2 dimensionally modulated structure of AuZn3 and the 3+2 dimensionally modulated structure of Se(Sn4)2K10. The three former cases are interesting because they are relatively weakly ordered structures where modelling is straight-forward, but the model itself is less than obvious to understand while the latter case appears highly ordered, but presents formal modelling difficulties. From these and previously known multi dimensional cases it would appear that higher order modulations are very prone to disorder. The image shows the hk0 layer from Se(Sn4)2K10.

Abstract (sommario):
Electrowetting display (EWD) has promising prospects in the electronic paper industry due to it having superior characteristics, such as the ability to provide a comfortable reading experience and quick response. However, in real applications, there are also problems related to dielectric deterioration, excess power consumption, optical instability and narrow color gamut etc. This paper reviewed the existing challenges and recent progress made in terms of improving the optical performance and reliability of EWD. First, the principle of electrowetting applied in small and confined configurations is introduced and the cause of the failure of the dielectric layer is analyzed. Then, the function of the pixel structures is described to avoid display defects. Next, electric signal modulations are compared in terms of achieving good image quality and optical stability. Lastly, the methods are presented for color panel realization. It was concluded that multi-layer dielectrics, three-dimensional pixel structures, proper electric frequency-and-amplitude modulation and an RGB color panel are expected to resolve the current limitations and contribute to designing advanced reflective displays.

Abstract (sommario):
The dynamics of small-amplitude perturbations, as well as the regime of fully developed nonlinear propagating waves, is investigated for pulsatile channel flows. The time-periodic base flows are known analytically and completely determined by the Reynolds number $Re$ (based on the mean flow rate), the Womersley number $Wo$ (a dimensionless expression of the frequency) and the flow-rate waveform. This paper considers pulsatile flows with a single oscillating component and hence only three non-dimensional control parameters are present. Linear stability characteristics are obtained both by Floquet analyses and by linearized direct numerical simulations. In particular, the long-term growth or decay rates and the intracyclic modulation amplitudes are systematically computed. At large frequencies (mainly $Wo\geqslant 14$), increasing the amplitude of the oscillating component is found to have a stabilizing effect, while it is destabilizing at lower frequencies; strongest destabilization is found for $Wo\simeq 7$. Whether stable or unstable, perturbations may undergo large-amplitude intracyclic modulations; these intracyclic modulation amplitudes reach huge values at low pulsation frequencies. For linearly unstable configurations, the resulting saturated fully developed finite-amplitude solutions are computed by direct numerical simulations of the complete Navier–Stokes equations. Essentially two types of nonlinear dynamics have been identified: ‘cruising’ regimes for which nonlinearities are sustained throughout the entire pulsation cycle and which may be interpreted as modulated Tollmien–Schlichting waves, and ‘ballistic’ regimes that are propelled into a nonlinear phase before subsiding again to small amplitudes within every pulsation cycle. Cruising regimes are found to prevail for weak base-flow pulsation amplitudes, while ballistic regimes are selected at larger pulsation amplitudes; at larger pulsation frequencies, however, the ballistic regime may be bypassed due to the stabilizing effect of the base-flow pulsating component. By investigating extended regions of a multi-dimensional parameter space and considering both two-dimensional and three-dimensional perturbations, the linear and nonlinear dynamics are systematically explored and characterized.

Abstract (sommario):
This study investigates the effects of stereo disparity on the perception of three-dimensional (3D) object shape. We tested the hypothesis that stereo input modulates the brain activity related to perceptual analyses of 3D shape configuration during image classification. High-density (256-channel) electroencephalogram (EEG) was used to record the temporal dynamics of visual shape processing under conditions of two-dimensional (2D) and 3D visual presentation. On each trial, observers made image classification judgements (‘Same’/’Different’) to two briefly presented, multi-part, novel objects. On different-object trials, stimuli could either share volumetric parts but not the global 3D shape configuration and have different parts but the same global 3D shape configuration or differ on both aspects. Analyses using mass univariate contrasts showed that the earliest sensitivity to 2D versus 3D viewing appeared as a negative deflection over posterior locations on the N1 component between 160 and 220 ms post-stimulus onset. Subsequently, event-related potential (ERP) modulations during the N2 time window between 240 and 370 ms were linked to image classification. N2 activity reflected two distinct components – an early N2 (240-290 ms) and a late N2 (290-370 ms) – that showed different patterns of responses to 2D and 3D input and differential sensitivity to 3D object structure. The results revealed that stereo input modulates the neural correlates of 3D object shape. We suggest that this reflects differential perceptual processing of object shape under conditions of stereo or mono input. These findings challenge current theories that attribute no functional role for stereo input during 3D shape perception.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Optical smoothing techniques are widely used in large high-power laser facilities designed for inertial confinement fusion research, such as the Laser Mégajoule (LMJ) in France. Those techniques are of primordial interest because they reduce laser–plasma instabilities as, for example, the stimulated backward Brillouin scattering (SBS). The latter takes place in the hot plasmas produced inside a hohlraum by the ablation of high-Z or gold material where ion acoustic waves are weakly damped, easing SBS. However, despite the current optical smoothing implementation, like smoothing by spectral dispersion (SSD), SBS is not sufficiently mitigated and may also damage the laser optics by following back the laser path. Moreover, SSD limits the available energy and may produce unwanted amplitude modulations in the laser chain, resulting in an additional damage. Using spectral distribution with two colors (Duluc et al 2019 Phys. Rev. Appl. 12 054055) has proven to limit the latter damage, keeping the same efficiency for limiting SBS. In this study, we go a step forward and generalize this approach by exploring multi-color spectral distribution schemes and the role of dispersion by means of three-dimensional simulations. This study paves the road to new laser concepts that could tackle more efficiently the laser–plasma interaction issues leading to a better laser energy coupling.

Abstract (sommario):
The main impediment in long-distance communications is nonlinear interference (NLI), stemming from nonlinear effects in optical fibers. While Digital signal processing algorithms offer partial mitigation, the inherent nonlinear nature of the fiber, coupled with predominant dispersion effects, continues to challenge the increase of transmission throughputs. Addressing nonlinearity at the information source through signal modulation technology is at the heart of our research. Traditional modulation schemes, as spectral efficiency climbs, such as QAM, become increasingly susceptible to NLI while their Mean Squared Euclidean Distance (MSED) diminishes. While multi-dimensional (MD) modulation yields improved linear and partial nonlinear gains, it has not yet demonstrated tangible benefits. On the other hand, the emergence of probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS), preferred for its enhanced linear gain and compatibility with conventional modulation hardware and software, introduces additional NLI. Consequently, the design of nonlinear-tolerant PCS is emerging as a pivotal research direction. Our thesis begins with a novel MD modulation for uniformly distributed signals. Then, we propose a novel approach combining MD with PCS to examine performance variations. Delving into PCS, we investigate the enumerative sphere shaping distribution matcher (DM), initially from an MD stance, and design a DM optimized for nonlinear tolerance over shorter distances. Subsequently, we introduce a new NLI measurement technique, accounting for dispersion effects. Integrating this with the sequence selection framework of PCS, we achieve successful long-distance transmission with notable nonlinear gains

Abstract (sommario):
Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems have shown a great potential for increasing the data transmission rates in wireless communications. These systems are characterized by a high design flexibility which allows a wide variety of efficient signaling techniques and resource allocation methods. In this thesis, we consider the capacity and transmission rates for MIMO systems using various multi-dimensional space-time modulation formats. The latters refer to various allocations of orthogonal signal dimensions (or modulating waveforms) to transmit antennas. For a single-user system with a fixed transmit power, we investigate the most efficient allocations of power and signal dimensions to transmit antennas so that transmission rates can be maximized under different cases of channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). In many situations, we show that using all the signal dimensions on all the transmit antennas yields the largest rates. An analysis of the capacity and transmission rates is also provided at low and high SNR, where the effect of the spatial channel parameters is pointed out. For a broadcast system, we consider the power and signal dimensions allocations not only for transmit antennas, but also among users. [...]

This thesis proposes a novel control method for three phase permanent magnet synchronous motor using multi-dimensional feedback quantization modulation (MDFQM). Unlike the conventional space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) which achieves three phase input voltage by a combination of the basic space vectors, the proposed scheme computes optimal switching commands to minimize the filtered measure of quantization error under the constrained switching vector space. Further, the filtered quantization error feedback produces the effect of noise shaping. The computation effort of this method can be reduced via a 2-D projection. Therefore, an implementation on a 16-bit microcontroller is demonstrated in this thesis. Comparisons with SVPWM on steady-state speed ripple, switching number and the surface temperature of MOSFETs are conducted. The results show that MDFQM reduces the switching number and the heat dissipation of MOSFETs without increasing the speed ripple. This will enhance the control efficiency and increase the reliability and life of the power stage circuit.

This paper has implemented three-phase current control in a FPGA-based system. First, we dicuss the mathematical derivation and concept of operation. Then we uses conclusion of the mathematical derivation to design the current control of PMSM. The controller adjusts the output current of inverter to achieve the current command in order to make a comparison of three different current control method. The core of three-phase current control is based on the concept of multi-dimensional feedback quantized modulator (MDFQM). The major part of this paper is MDFQCC and compares with SPWM and MDFQM in the reference. This paper verifies the difference between SPWM, MDFQM and MDFQCC by simulation and experiment.

In this thesis, two cascaded electrodynamic shakers are fed to a six-switch-inverter. To enlarge the region of the output voltages, the high-efficiency multi-dimensional feedback quantized modulation is used. The results of the conventional pulse-width modulation (PWM) are also provided for comparison. All the controls are implemented in FPGA to verify the proposed method. Finally, we verify the difference between PI-PWM and PI-MDFQM by simulation and experiment.

Abstract (sommario):
Exciton dynamics in semiconductor nanostructures are dominated by the effects of many-body physics. The application of coherent spectroscopic tools, such as two-dimensional Fourier transform spectroscopy (2dFTS), to the study of these systems can reveal signatures of these effects, and in combination with sophisticated theoretical modeling, can lead to more complete understanding of the behaviour of these systems. 2dFTS has previously been applied to the study of GaAs quantum well samples. In this thesis, we outline a precis of the technique before describing our own experiments using 2dFTS in a partially collinear geometry. This geometry has previously been used to study chemical systems, but we believe these experiments to be the first such performed on semiconductor samples. We extend this technique to a reflection mode 2dFTS experiment, which we believe to be the first such measurement. In order to extend the techniques of coherent spectroscopy to structured systems, we construct an experimental apparatus that permits us to control the beam geometry used to perform four-wave mixing reflection measurements. To isolate extremely weak signals from intense background fields, we extend a conventional lock-in detection scheme to one that treats the optical fields exciting the sample on an unequal footing. To the best of our knowledge, these measurements represent a novel spectroscopic tool that has not previously been described.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter deals with coded modulation and impairment compensation techniques in optical fiber communication. Probabilistic shaping is a new coded modulation technology, which can reduce transmission power by precoding, reduce bit error rate and improve communication rate. We proposed a probabilistic shaping 16QAM modulation scheme based on trellis coded modulation. Experimental results show that this scheme can achieve better optical SNR gain and BER performance. On the other hand, in order to meet the demand of transmission rate of next generation high speed optical communication systems, multi-dimensional modulation and coherent detection are sufficiently applied. The imperfect characteristics of optoelectronic devices and fiber link bring serious impairments to the high baud-rate and high order modulation format signal, causes of performance impairment are analyzed, pre-compensation and receiver side’s DSP techniques designed for coherent systems are introduced.

Abstract (sommario):
The research of the communication between implanted Cardiac Pacemaker and external devices is a focus. In this paper, a data communications model based Volume Conduction is creatively presented, in this way the human body conductive ability will been utilized to transmit current, which is more effective and decrease for harm of the human body than the other ways, such as: RF, Optical Transcutaneous, etc. As the frequency increases the KHz level, the effect of background biological noise is considered negligible, the channel is thus modeled as AWGN channel in these frequencies. From Shannon information theory, in two-dimensional modulation, the volume conduction channel capacity formula was derived, further derivation: with extremely low SNR using in the two-level modulation can be very effective use of channel capacity, with high SNR a multi-level modulation is used in order to make full use of the channel capacity. Matlab software is used to the channel simulation, the input and output signal waveforms and eye diagram comparison, the curves of the BER and SNR.

Abstract (sommario):
AIS is three-dimensional spinal deformity with unclear etiopathogenesis. LBX1 is so far the only multi-centers validated AIS predisposing gene. The imbalance of posterior paraspinal muscles is an important factor in AIS etiopathogenesis. It is poorly understood how LBX1 contributes to the abnormal paraspinal muscles and onset/progression of AIS. We aimed to evaluate the expression of LBX1 in paraspinal muscles at the concave and convex side in AIS, and whether alternation of LBX1 expression could affect myoblastsactivities and potentially influence muscle-bone interaction via myokines expression. Paraspinal muscles from AIS and age- and curvature-matched congenital scoliosis (CS) patients were collected for fiber types analysis. Biopsies were also subjected to qPCR to validate expression of myogenic markers, selected myokines and LBX1. Human skeletal muscle myoblast (HSMM) was used for LBX1 loss-of-function study in vitro. Muscle fiber types analysis showed type I and type IIX/IIAX fibers proportion were significantly different between AIS concave and convex but not in two sides of CS. LBX1, myogenic markers and one myokine were significantly imbalanced in AIS but not in CS. Loss-of-function study showed knockdown of LBX1 could inhibit myogenic markers expression and myokines as well. This study provides new insight into the association between imbalanced paraspinal muscle and potential muscle-bone crosstalk in AIS patients and the biological function of predisposing gene LBX1. Further investigation with appropriate animal models is warranted to explore if asymmetric expression of LBX1 could result in distinct muscle phenotypes and bone qualities thus affect the progression of spine curvature in AIS.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract High frequency injector-coupled thermoacoustic instabilities are a major threat to multi-jet combustors in rocket and gas turbine engines. The complex three-dimensional acoustic coupling between the combustion chamber and injector acoustics cause local fluctuations in heat release. In turn, multiple thermoacoustic feedback mechanisms close the thermoacoustic loop and serve as a source of the thermoacoustic instability. Except for the flame deformation and flame displacement mechanism, the underlying feedback mechanisms for high frequency instabilities are to a large extent unknown. The paper at hand gives new insights into the injector-coupled convective driving mechanisms that are present in multi-jet combustors at perfectly premixed conditions. The forced flame response to the first transverse combustor mode is investigated for two distinct injector tube lengths: one with an axial acoustic velocity node and one with a velocity anti-node coupling at the injector-combustor interface. Phase locked OH* images reveal convectively transported coherent vortex structures as the main source of the flame response. The origin of the flame response can be linked to the axial acoustic velocity at the injector-combustor interface using numerical simulations. Both configurations show a positive Rayleigh Integral and a clear oscillation of the heat release fluctuations in-phase with the acoustic pressure fluctuations over the full period. In similarity to time delay models in low frequency thermoacoustics, a wave number model is proposed to estimate the local flame response due to feed flow modulations and validated with the experimental results.
