Stokes, Lisa Odham. Food for Thought: Cannibalism in The Untold Story and Dumplings. Edinburgh University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474424592.003.0011.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Food features prominently in Hong Kong cinema, from the infamous “Eat my rice” scene in Woo’s heroic bloodshed A Better Tomorrow 2 to the special recipes of dueling restaurants in the Hui Brothers’ comedy Chicken and Duck Talk. While in many action movies, dramas and comedies, food brings people together, in Hong Kong horror films, food carries more ominous overtones. Cannibalism serves as the main course in Herman Yau’s Untold Story (aka Human Pork Buns) and Fruit Chan’s Dumplings (the former drawn from a real case and the latter a short and feature). Both explore the political and social underpinnings of their time. Untold Story (1993) is an excellent example of crisis cinema- in your face, low budget, high anxiety over the return of Hong Kong to China. Dumplings (2004) reflects the post-postmodern fascination with a youth culture, at any costs. Both films mark class distinctions and reflect the cultural importance of food in Chinese society as well as provide comment on their times.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Horror films in Hong Kong cinema have eschewed terror in favour of comedy, where supernatural beings take the form of hopping vampires, wandering spirits and underworld demons rendered in latex masks and movie slime. This chapter explores the comic presentation of these subjects in Hong Kong horror, where the self-reflexive exposure of the cinematic machinery of costume and special effects appear to put it at odds with the spectral affectivity of the Hong Kong ghost story. This chapter returns to two classic films from the mid-1980s, A Chinese Ghost Story (Tsui Hark 1987) and Rouge (Stanley Kwan 1988), films from the ‘second wave’ period long noted to carry ‘Hong Kong’ as a subject of concern in the run up to the British handover of 1997, and revisits their historical positioning in the light of more recent post-1997 incarnations such as Visible Secret (Ann Hui 2001), My Left Eye Sees Ghosts (Johnnie To 2002), and Rigor Mortis (Juno Mak 2013).

Bettinson, Gary. Sympathy for the Slasher: Strategies of Character Engagement in Pang Ho-cheung’s Dream Home. Edinburgh University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474424592.003.0012.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Pang Ho-cheung’s Dream Home (2010) is a controversial Hong Kong slasher movie in which a killer (played by Josie Ho) constitutes the prime object of spectator sympathy and allegiance. To its detractors, the film falls foul of an “aesthetic error”: by presenting the heroine’s victims as “undeserving” of brutalization, Dream Home inadvertently undercuts its own attempt to generate sympathy for the slasher protagonist. This paper attempts to dispute the critics’ charge of aesthetic defectiveness, arguing instead that the film’s strategies of character engagement purposively foster a critique of Hong Kong’s capitalist hegemony. More broadly, the paper tries to demonstrate the ways in which Dream Home is a specifically Hong Kong horror film. This discussion is situated within wider debates concerning the imputed loss of Hong Kong “localism” in the context of global forces such as Mainlandization and Hollywoodization.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This chapter discusses the controversy in Sanum v Lao wherein a Macanese investor sought Beijing’s treaty protection before an investment arbitration tribunal. The chapter discusses, more widely, Beijing’s regime governing the application of Chinese treaties to Macao and Hong Kong, and it discusses the Sanum affair’s broader lessons for the application and interpretation of investment treaties in the face of a bespoke devolution treaty. Finally, it discusses how two tribunals and the Singapore courts have persistently failed to recognize a requirement under two devolution agreements—the Sino–Portuguese Joint Declaration and the Sino—British Joint Declaration-for the consultation of Macao and Hong Kong as a precondition to the application of a Chinese treaty to these special administrative regions. The chapter describes how both the tribunal and the Singapore Court of Appeal forced, instead, a treaty succession solution given by the moving treaty frontiers rule.

Chan, Kenneth, e Andrew Stuckey, a cura di. Sino-Enchantment. Edinburgh University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474460842.001.0001.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Although Chinese film audiences, including those in the PRC, Taiwan and Hong Kong, have always maintained a foundational cultural interest in the fantastic, this trend has dramatically increased over the last decade. Sino-Enchantment is the first work in English to approach this recent explosion of fantastic films in Chinese cinemas, where each re-envisioning of the form is determined by cultural, economic, political and technological factors to produce fresh inventions and creative reinventions of familiar narratives, characters and tropes. As a whole, the book argues that fantastic cinemas serve a fundamental function of re-enchanting mundane modern society with wonder and awe. Individual chapters present detailed examinations of works by famous filmmakers such as Zhang Yimou, Tsui Hark and Stephen Chow, as well as case studies of films like The Assassin (2015), Monster Hunt (2015) and The Great Wall (2016). The book focuses on a range of cinematic forms, practices and themes, which include blockbuster films, art cinema, exploitation B-movies, digital effects, ecocinema, film blanc and contemporary adaptations of traditional Chinese classics. Sino-enchantment functions as a new theoretical lens through which readers can engage with elements of the fantastic in Chinese cinema in nuanced, complex and innovative ways.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This chapter discusses A Genuine Tong Funeral (1967), an unusual album of both lyricism and power that featured Bley's compositions. Bley titled the work for a scene from a French movie depicting a funeral procession in Hong Kong. In connection with the funereal motif, she described her piece as “a dark opera without words.” According to Bley, the thematic thread running through this “dark opera without words” explored “emotions toward death, from the most irreverent to those of deepest loss.” Moreover, in an introduction to the piece, Bley wrote that she thought of A Genuine Tong Funeral as a dramatic work that should be at least partially staged, including lighting effects and costumes for the musicians—an intent likely influenced by the theatrics of the psychedelic rock movement.

Sherwood, Yvonne, a cura di. The Bible and Feminism. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198722618.001.0001.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This groundbreaking book breaks with established canons and resists some of the stereotypes of feminist biblical studies. A wide range of contributors—from the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, East Africa, South Africa, Argentina, Israel, Hong Kong, the US, the UK, and Iran—showcase new methodological and theoretical movements such as feminist materialisms; intersectionality; postidentitarian ?nomadic? politics; gender archaeology; lived religion; and theories of the human and the posthuman. They engage a range of social and political issues, including migration and xenophobia; divorce and family law; abortion; ?pinkwashing?; the neoliberal university; the second amendment; AIDS and sexual trafficking; Tianamen Square and 9/11; and the politics of ?the veil?. Foundational figures in feminist biblical studies work alongside new voices and contributors from a range of disciplines in conversations with the Bible that go well beyond the expected canon-within-the-canon assumed to be of interest to feminist biblical scholars. Moving beyond the limits of a text-orientated model of reading, they look at how biblical texts were actualized in the lives of religious revolutionaries, such as Joanna Southcott and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. In important interventions—made all the more urgent in the context of the Trump presidency and Brexit—they make biblical traditions speak to gun legislation, immigration, the politics of abortion, and Roe v. Wade.

Chia, Jack Meng-Tat. Monks in Motion. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190090975.001.0001.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Chinese Buddhists have never remained stationary. They have always been on the move. Why did Buddhist monks migrate from China to Southeast Asia? How did they participate in transregional Buddhist networks across the South China Sea? In Monks in Motion, Jack Meng-Tat Chia tells a story of monastic connectivity across the South China Sea during the twentieth century. Following in the footsteps of three prominent monks—Chuk Mor (1913–2002), Yen Pei (1917–1996), and Ashin Jinarakkhita (1923–2002)—Chia explores the connected history of Buddhist communities in China and maritime Southeast Asia. Monks in Motion is the first book to offer a history of what Chia terms “South China Sea Buddhism,” referring to a Buddhism that emerged from a swirl of correspondence networks, forced exiles, voluntary visits, evangelizing missions, institution-building campaigns, and the organizational efforts of countless Chinese and Chinese diasporic Buddhist monks. Drawing on multilingual research conducted in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, he challenges the conventional categories of “Chinese Buddhism” and “Southeast Asian Buddhism” by focusing on the lesser-known—yet no less significant—Chinese Buddhist communities of maritime Southeast Asia. By crossing the artificial spatial frontier between China and Southeast Asia, Monks in Motion brings Southeast Asia into the study of Chinese Buddhism and Chinese Buddhism into the study of Southeast Asia.

Kim, Jihoon. Documentary's Expanded Fields. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197603819.001.0001.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Documentary's Expanded Fields: New Media and the Twenty-First-Century Documentary offers a theoretical mapping of contemporary non-standard documentary practices enabled by the proliferation of new digital imaging, lightweight and non-operator digital cameras, multiscreen and interactive interfaces, and web 2.0 platforms. These emergent practices encompass digital data visualizations, digital films that experiment with the deliberate manipulation of photographic records, documentaries based on drone cameras, GoPros, and virtual reality (VR) interfaces, documentary installations in the gallery, interactive documentary (i-doc), citizens' vernacular online videos that document scenes of the protests such as the Arab Spring, the Hong Kong Protests, and the Black Lives Matter Movements, and new activist films, videos, and archiving projects that respond to those political upheavals. Building on the interdisciplinary framework of documentary studies, digital media studies, and contemporary art criticism, Jihoon Kim investigates the ways in which these practices both challenge and update the aesthetic, epistemological, political, and ethical assumptions of traditional film-based documentary. Providing a diverse range of case studies that classify and examine these practices, the book argues that the new media technologies and the experiential platforms outside the movie theater, such as the gallery, the world wide web, and social media services, expand five horizons of documentary cinema: image, vision, dispositif, archive, and activism. This reconfiguration of these five horizons demonstrates that documentary cinema in the age of new media and platforms, which Kim labels as the “twenty-first-century documentary,” dynamically changes its boundaries while also exploring new experiences of reality and history in times of the contemporary crises across the globe, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fitzgerald, John, e Hon-ming Yip, a cura di. Chinese Diaspora Charity and the Cantonese Pacific, 1850-1949. Hong Kong University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5790/hongkong/9789888528264.001.0001.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Charity is common to diaspora communities the world over, from Armenian diaspora networks to Zimbabwean ones, but the forms charitable activity takes vary across communities and sites of settlement. What was distinctive about Chinese diaspora charity? This volume explores the history of charity among overseas Chinese during the century from 1850 to 1949 with a particular focus on the Cantonese "Gold Rush" communities of the Pacific rim, a loosely integrated network of émigrés from Cantonese-speaking counties in Guangdong Province, centering on colonial Hong Kong where people lived, worked and moved among English-speaking settler societies of North America and Oceania. The Cantonese Pacific was distinguished from fabled Nanyang communities of Southeast Asia in a number of ways and the forms their charity assumed were equally distinctive. In addition to traditional functions, charity served as a medium of cross-cultural negotiation with dominant Anglo-settler societies of the Pacific. Community leaders worked through civic associations to pioneer new models of public charity to demand recognition of Chinese immigrants as equal citizens in their host societies. Their charitable innovations were shaped by their host societies in turn, exemplified by women's role in charitable activities from the early decades of the 20th century. By focusing on charitable practices in the Cantonese diaspora over a century of trans-Pacific migration, this collection sheds new light on the history of charity in the Chinese diaspora, including institutional innovations not apparent within China itself, and on the place of the Chinese diaspora in the wider history of charity and philanthropy.

The Global Manager’s Guide to Living and Working Abroad. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400657559.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Living and working abroad. Sounds glamorous—and maybe it is, if you’re posted to Hong Kong or Sydney. But what if your company sends you to Bangkok, Warsaw, or Manila? Many questions arise: Is it safe to go out at night? Do quality schools exist? How polluted is the air? Is public transportation handy? What’s the average monthly rent for a decent house? What inoculations should you get before you go? Can you find your favorite brand of toothpaste? The Global Manager’s Guide to Living and Working Abroad: Eastern Europe and Asia answers these and many other questions expats will have about the cities that companies send employees to most often in Eastern Europe and Asia, as well as Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Though the heart of the book is the city-by-city listing, it also includes tips on preparing for the move, dealing with culture shock, staying connected to the home front, understanding the psychological aspects of living abroad, country-specific business and social etiquette, and other topics of concern to workers sent abroad. The guide also includes information for corporate HR people: When a cost of living differential is appropriate and how to calculate it, how to obtain necessary work permits and visas, how to help employees stay as safe and secure as possible, and how to arrange for healthcare and insurance. Best of all, the information is up to date and comes right from the fresh research of Mercer—the consultancy many other companies turn to for advice and the latest facts regarding working and living conditions in all corners of the globe. That’s why this book will help expatriate employees feel at home in cities far from their native land whether it’s Seoul, Moscow, or Dubai.
