Abstract (sommario):
In The reproduction of mothering, Nancy Chodorow laid the blueprint for understanding mothers and daughters in their intricate psychosexual identification and differentiation. Synthesising object relations theory with feminist sociological concerns regarding gender equality, and the psychosocial reproduction not just of mothering but also of misogyny, Chodorow brought together complex psychoanalytic theory with feminist utopian projects. The mother‐daughter relationship had been hitherto dismissed in orthodox psychoanalysis as irrelevant to the central Oedipal drama. In situating mother‐daughter relations both within the classic ‘family romance’, and also prior to and constitutive of it, Chodorow bequeathed a critically important legacy. She provided a new psychological language for understanding female subjectivity, inclusive of yet differentiating the mother’s and the daughter’s subjectivity. This article reviews Chodorow’s classic work, The reproduction of mothering, while also extending her original formulation to a contemporary understanding of changing gendered social relations. Drawing on the recent work of Alison Stone, I elucidate the process of not only reproducing but also reinventing mothering. From here, I tentatively explore how mothers are symbolically and actually ‘reproducing the social’; or, taking their maternal identities into civil society and transforming that society to incorporate and reflect their interests. Citizen mothers, I argue, have the potential to transform human relations, economies and polities, integrating an ‘ethic of care’ with an ‘ethic of justice’. The last section of this article explores the emergence of ‘autonomous mothers’ and their impact.

Abstract (sommario):
The murderous and destructive dimension in the acts of mothers in our corpus invites us to relate to the myth of Medea, the real place of the most tragic fantasies. The drama of Medea made it possible to build a “medeic structure” (Alain Depaulis, 2015) which today constitutes the foundation of any psychoanalytical and criminological analysis of maternal infanticide. In the novels under study, mothers' blaming of daughters and their responsibility for misfortune leads to self-harming behavior on the part of daughters. The castration in mothers in the three works under study leads to murderous behavior towards children, but the reasons remain linked to different amorous passions. When castration is due to the absence of the male child, given the importance that the boy requires in the North African and Muslim imagination, the result of this castration results in the revenge of the female children, because considered as source of misfortune by the mother. If castration finds its source in the absence of the love felt for the spouse, as is the case of the passionate love of Medea for Jason, the result is always revenge through murder against children which aims to neutralize this love by removing the blood tie.

Abstract (sommario):
Hu shi's play of 1919, The Main Event of One's Life (Zhongshen dashi), introduced spoken drama (huaju) to the modern Chinese stage, in imitation of the plays in the Western Ibsenesque tradition. Ever since then, May Fourth male playwrights such as Guo Moruo, Ouyang Yuqian, Chen Dabei, and others, in forming a tradition countering that of the Confucian ruling ideology, have treated women's liberation and equality issues as important political and ideological strategies (Chen 1995, 137–55). Female playwrights such as Bai Wei also depicted loving mothers and courageous daughters waging a fierce struggle against the patriarchal society, symbolized either by domineering and lustful domestic fathers or by new nationalist fathers already corrupted by the emerging revolution. The tradition on the part of both male and female playwrights of exploring woman as a metaphor for national salvation and a given political agenda was most fully articulated in the street theater that grew up during the period of the War of Resistance to Japan.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract;Marina Carr, one of the prominent Irish feminist playwrights, deviates from the mainstream patriarchal portrayal of women in her modern plays. She moves away from the stereotypical image of Irish mother as an emblem of the nation and the land, hence, seen as a selfless, loving, sacrificing woman who identifies herself with the motherhood. Instead Carr introduces broken, maltreated, and defiant women to the modern Irish stage. Her adaptation of the myth of Medea for her play By the Bog of Cats…is considered as a challenge to the classical Greek and Irish drama. Both Medea and Hester Swane are outsiders, betrayed by husbands, outcast from their homeland and community. Their search for identity and independence lead them to commit unspeakable actions. Yet, while Medea was driven by her desire to revenge on a betraying husband, Hester reacted to ongoing fear of abandonment and loss. This paper highlights Carr's talent in portraying modern ordinary mothers who defy the male-dominated society and seek a social status in her own right. Mothers who show an untraditional love for their children; a mother who are ready to sacrifice herself for the welfare of her daughter, saving her from a bleak future with a selfish father, dysfunctional grandmother, and immature step mother. Thus, Hester Swane represents new unconventional Irish mother who is willing to defy the norms to prove herself.

Abstract (sommario):
The study illustrates the gender aspect of Ukraine’s social history during the late 19th and early 20th century. The author pays special attention to the specific functioning of the Ukrainian Institute of Motherhood of this period. The psychological and mental spheres of peasant life within this study were outlined. Women’s perception of a “traditional” family directly depended on parental education. It is not a secret that the opinion of society was very important to our citizens, so in order to avoid their condemnation, it was necessary to meet certain unwritten standards. These standards were a mixture of God’s commandments and local prejudices, which shaped our ancestors’ mythological outlook. Even in the 21st century we could not avoid the stereotype of the perfect mother. She was always considered as an exemplary daughter, mistress and a dreamer of a huge happy family. Analysing ethnographic and historical sources, it becomes clear that this fact is false. The history is full of testimonials regarding women’s unwillingness to give a birth. They used to practice various contraceptives and abortions. Besides these methods had a terrible effect on women’s health, they also became outcasts in dogmatic society. Not a less drama of the 19–20 century was an unsatisfactory level of medicine development. This led to frequent infant deaths. There is an evidence that parents were not often upset by the death of their own child. The reason for this was the poverty of the family, although the parents worked really hard. The subject of the motherhood is extremely important in the field of humanities. This study is an attempt to determine the causes of non-Christian behaviour of mothers towards their children. We should understand that everyone has a right to make a mistake, but history should not idealise anyone. It should still be objective

Abstract (sommario):
This paper aims to compare and analyze mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship portrayed in Korean-Chinese TV family dramas and reveal cultural educational content through Hofstead’s cultural dimension theory. Due to lack of cultural understanding and acquisition, Korean learners of Chinese often perceive cultural differences in a new cultural environment, leading to conflicts. There is a need to adapt to cultural dimensions between Korean and Chinese cultures to alleviate conflicts in family life. This study compared clues from TV dramas that reflect people's psychology, behavior, and social background data to examine cultural dimension of Korean and Chinese cultures. Cultural dimensions hidden in situation and context of drama was analyzed by comparing 16 Korean and Chinese family dramas with high viewer ratings. Based on the results of Hofstead’s study of cultural dimensions, three cultural dimensions with largest numerical differences were analyzed on Korea and China. The paper revealed morphological and feducational educational content of cultural dimension of high wealth image based on actual situation shown in dramas of Korea and China starting from structuralism that can contribute to Chinese Korean language learners acquire differences in cultural dimension of Korea and China and resolve conflicts.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: HIV-infection and AIDS are major problems not only in South Africa, but worldwide. It has become evident that not only is HIV-infection and AIDS rife amongst the youth of South Africa, but the rate of infection is likely to increase within the next few years. Second to the HIV-infection pandemic in South Africa, is the high prevalence of teenage pregnancies. These have been shown to increase rapidly with more teenage girls becoming pregnant than a few years back. Teenagers tend not to use contraceptives and do not make use of their parents as sexual informants. It is believed that parents do not play an active role in the imparting of knowledge and sexual information. The youth and especially teenage girls' sense of personal agency are limited, when they are confronted with dangerous sexual situations. Furthermore, it has been argued that a person's socio-economic status plays an important role in HIV-infection, contraceptive use and pregnancy - with teenagers from lower socio-economic groups more likely to be the higher risk group. This study proposed to address the need for research on female reproductive health in all the diverse South African communities, by focusing specifically on working-class mothers' constructions of daughters' sexuality in a "coloured"! semirural area of South Africa. In the current study, data were obtained from ten women aged 32 to 55 years about their views of their daughters' sexuality and their experiences with their own sexuality. All of the participants were mothers of teenage daughters. The women all came from a semi-rural "coloured" community and mostly varied only in terms of age and educational level. All of these participants were from a working-class background. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with the women and using a feminist social constructionist grounded theory these women's accounts were explored and analysed. The analysis revealed that women still uphold the belief that sexuality is an entity that should be feared. The focus of mothers' discussions with their daughters centered on the dangers of sexuality. Furthermore the analysis indicated that mothers aspired to reduce the sexual dangers that their daughters face. They endeavored to protect their daughters by continuously subjecting them to various messages - such as "sex is bad", "sex and sexuality can ruin one's future" and "virginity is the key to successful womanhood". Mothers also strived to protect their daughters through constant scrutiny. However, mothers, in their efforts to preserve their daughters innocence, were unwittingly seen to endanger the girls. They were endangering their daughters by keeping them ignorant and through shaming sexual experimentation and sexual curiosity. A restricted focus on the danger and perils of sexuality is found to be extremely hazardous. It overshadowed all the other sexual experiences that women might have. The emphasis on danger portrays women solely as victims and as sexually vulnerable.
Inligting aangaande hulle sienings oor hul dogters se seksualiteit sowel as hul eie was verkry.

Abstract (sommario):
Despite significant change in women’s lives in recent decades, the prevailing ideology of motherhood is predominantly based on nineteenth-century ideals. Underpinned by a socially-constructed, idealised version of womanhood, the dominant paradigm promotes an essentialist model of maternal excellence largely grounded in the early childhood context; that of the ‘good mother’. Amidst deviancy discourse that has historically beleaguered women who failed to fulfil prescribed standards of good mothering, this thesis contends that the ideology of motherhood that remains dominant requires substantial revision. Central to this is the need to understand the range of historical factors that shape and influence cultural, and thus, personal understandings of the role of a good mother. Accordingly, the literature reviewed is subjected to critical analysis, examining stereotypical depictions of women that have historically typified the archetypal ideal. Particular consideration is given to sociological, psychoanalytic and feminist accounts of motherhood, mothering and the mother-daughter relationship. Therein, the focus of this study involves assessment of the degree to which the cultural meaning attributed to being a good mother influences personal perceptions and the lived experience of mothering. While the literature reviewed provides a useful foundation for considering the likely impact the ideology of motherhood has upon the lives of contemporary women, it also highlights that the maternal perspective has been noticeably absent from much of the literature. Given the centrality of the maternal role in reproducing existing conditions of mothering, and indeed, the mother-daughter relationship (Chodorow, 1978), this study is perhaps long overdue. Based on a case study involving twelve Melbourne mothers, this thesis highlights both the commonalities and considerably divergent experiences of motherhood and the mother-daughter relationship in the postmodern context.

Abstract (sommario):
This study examined the narratives and stories of 13 daughters of Jewish women Holocaust survivors. A qualitative multi-methodological integrative approach that incorporated feminist standpoint epistemologies and elements oF grounded theory was used. Mechanisms such as the use of an auditor and judges were utilized to address the researcher's reflexive stance and subjective frame. Participants' data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Interviews were subjected to extensive qualitative analyses and were compared to find recursive themes and sub-themes. The results oF this study indicated that Holocaust survivor mothers were conceptualized by their daughters as being either strong, challenged or both. Participants described the lessons they learned from their mothers' survivor narratives and stories in terms of strength, resilience, transcendency and Jewish identity. Participants considered these lessons to be vital aspects of their lives and strategies for living.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis contributes a sociological treatise of clothing to the multi-disciplinary area of material culture studies. In the context of the adult mother-daughter relationship, it aims to account for first person experiences with the materiality of clothing as these intersect with women’s personal and collective narratives. This thesis thereby explores the intersection of object and interpersonal relationships in a situated and contextualised manner. To achieve this end, a user based methodology is designed and executed to allow for women’s first person accounts of clothing individually and collectively. Utilising this methodological approach avoids those observer based assumptions that arise from the semiotic examinations of clothing that flood the sociological literature. Furthermore, this is the first comprehensive study to account for clothing as it appears in the adult mother-daughter relationship from the perspective of both, mother and adult daughter. Considering clothing as an important object of investigation in the lives of women forces us to rethink traditional accounts of such research pursuits as frivolous or unworthy of attention within the academy (Crane and Bovone 2006). A series of four findings chapters are presented in this thesis that work to provide a marriage of first person and collective mother-daughter narratives to a discussion of the materiality of clothing.

Abstract (sommario):
The shows staged by Victor Gherlac in 1940-1950 corresponded to their time. In the Stefan Batca show, staged just before the outbreak of the war, the foreboding of the war felt. On the eve of Victory Day, the premiere of the spectacular musical comedy One Night in May took place. The show Under the Chestnuts in Prague, staged in the first post-war years, reflected the contrasting visions relevant at the time. The show The Outlaws staged the struggle of the people against the oppressors (which oppressors?) in 1949. In 1950, in the romantic entertainment of the operetta Trembita, people's hopes for a new, happy life could be felt. Victor Gherlac is the director of several shows, among which it is worth mentioning: the fairy tale The Enchanted Mace, the musical comedies Mărioara’s Happiness and Ileana’Carpet, the musical choreographic enchantment, the satire Sanziana and Pepelea, the musical drama The Turbulent Danube, the poetic musical-choreographic show Ovidiu, the psychological musical show The man and the wolf, the dramatic show For the family home, Mother-in-law with three daughters-in-law, permeated by the inner musicality of Moldovan folk art filled with Moldovan folk melodies, songs, dances.

Abstract (sommario):
Soviet propaganda promised liberation of women from household shackles, glorifying them as ‘heroines’, who embody love for family, work and communist ideals. Behind ideology, the ‘second shift’ burdened mothers with tedious housework, childrearing, and professional workload. Nowadays their daughters, who were born in the turmoil of collapse of USSR, experience motherhood differently, with the aid of information and technologies, that seemingly ease childcare and everyday life in democratic Latvia. Although mothering is a subjective experience and each next generation questions decisions of the previous one, contemporary motherhood favours different childrearing methods, rooted in evidence-based sources, Western medicine practitioners, and democratized family models in contrast to Dr. Spock’s advice, home remedies or physical punishment. ‘Intensive mothering’ ideology adds to the pressures of modern motherhood, deeming the mother entirely responsible for social, psychological and cognitive well-being of her children. By employing the theoretical framework of Arlie Hochschild, this article explores the unspoken truths, doubts, and grievances of 21st century mothers towards their ‘mothers-heroines’ of USSR. The ‘deep story’ has been constructed, intertwining narratives, gained from eight phenomenological semi-structured interviews with new mothers. The ‘deep story’ has been supplemented by a case study of a viral post (Facebook, March 2021) by a contemporary mother, reflecting on advantages of modern motherhood in comparison to mothering in 1985, sparking a heated debate. The ‘deep story’ of contemporary mothers unfolds the layers of unarticulated feelings – from resentment to gratefulness, from anger to love. Inner conflict between respecting parents, and following an individual path is also present.
