Abstract (sommario):
In this article, the author examines the causes, course and results of the Ottoman military campaigns in the Peloponnese in the second quarter of the 15th century. The author comes to the conclusion that the raids of the Ottoman commander Turahan Bey in 1423, 1431 and 1435 were rather local acts of aggression aimed at intimidating the Morean despots and were intended to prevent the expansion of Byzantine influence in Greece and in the north of the Peloponnese. At the same time, the Ottoman campaign against the Peloponnese in 1446 had the character of a punitive expedition. Sultan Murad II personally led the invasion of the Morea, which speaks of the desire of the Ottomans to eliminate the center of resistance in this region once and for all. The shameful vassalage, which the Despotate of Morea fell into after the sack of the Peloponnese by the Ottomans, actually put an end to the attempts of the despot Constantine Palaiologos to create a strong, independent and self-sufficient state in the place of the Morea.

Abstract (sommario):
The cultural politics of Catholic restoration under Mary Tudor have been as crucial to the historical legacy of Thomas More as More's image was to the regime's own historical self-presentation. Not only did the Marian period see the first reappearance in print of many of More's writings after twenty years, the overwhelming presence of More's figure and work in official Catholic discourse, especially from 1556 onwards, also generated many instances of implicit Morean echoes pervading a great variety of Marian literary texts and genres. This essay analyses a number of such hidden presences of More within classical translations of the period, from John Brende's History of Quintus Curtius, which was issued almost simultaneously with the 1553 Marian edition of More's Dialogue of Comfort, to George Colvile's Boethius and Nicholas Grimald's De officiis (both published in 1556), whose appearance coincided with the preparation of More's English Workes for print. As it emerges, such implicit echoes and allusions to More's life and writings not only reshaped the classical works themselves, both updating them and enriching them with additional cultural and political significations; above all they helped to invest the program of Marian religious restoration with the credentials of classical learning promoted by the early Tudor humanists.

Abstract (sommario):
The history of the literary reception of Thomas More's Utopia in Portugal has been a tale of omissions, censorships and deferred translations that highlight a flaw within the Portuguese cultural system. Indeed, it is somewhat ironic that such a representative work of both Western literature and thought, historically associated with the opening of the world's geographical horizons, and which ascribed to a Portuguese sailor, Raphael Hythloday, the discovery of an ideal place, was first translated into Portuguese only in the second half of the twentieth century. However, the first decade of the twenty-first century seems to bode a more auspicious literary fortune for More's Utopia within the Portuguese literary idiom: not only has an edition of More's work finally been translated from the original Latin, but also two novels were published in 2004, A lenda de Martim Regos, by Pedro Canais, and Rafael, by Manuel Alegre. In the context of both books' plots, they rewrite the complex traits of the character of the Portuguese sailor and discoverer of the ideal island. The same reinvention of the character of Raphael had already been attempted, in 1998, by José V. de Pina Martins in his long dialogic Morean narrative, Utopia III. In this essay, I will focus both on the documental sources related to Portuguese culture that are at the root of More's Utopia and on some relevant aspects of the reception of the character of Raphael Hythloday within the aforementioned novels.

Ábel, Török. "Hősköltemény a Moreai Krónikában. Geoffroy de Bruyères vitézsége". Antik Tanulmányok 65, n. 1 (18 giugno 2021): 31–56. http://dx.doi.org/10.1556/092.2021.00003.

Abstract (sommario):
A függelékben továbbá megtalálható a közel másfél száz verssor irodalmi fordítása. The study examines the origins and characteristics of a unique Byzantine ‘epic’ in the Chronicle of Morea : the description of the Battle of Pelagonia and the exploits of Sir Geoffroy de Bruyères. Although the professional literature agrees on that the episode is likely based on folk poetry and oral tradition, many questions (such as literary crosstalk, intertextual connections, the author’s intentions etc.) remain unanswered. The study presents the historical context of the Chronicle, examines the person of Sir Geoffroy de Bruyères and the potential intertextual relations of his epic, and analyses the Hungarian relations of the Battle of Pelagonia. The literary translation of the nearly 150 lines of the battle is attached in the appendix.

Abstract (sommario):
Perhaps the most notable achievement of the so-called renaissance in Morean studies in recent years has been to provide the historiography with a new focus, namely the phase of More's career that begins in the aftermath of Utopia (1516) and concludes with his imprisonment in 1534. Hitherto, interest in that period was confined largely to the domestic scene celebrated in Holbein's famous portrait and drawings, the household at Chelsea as a centre of humanist culture, Christian piety and cosy family virtue. Yet this was the period of More's public career in which he served as a councillor to Henry vm and in a number of major administrative posts before his elevation to succeed Cardinal Wolsey as lord chancellor in 1529. It was also the period in which he assumed a leading role in the campaign against the Reformation in England, partly as a prosecutor of heresy on behalf of the Crown, but more spectacularly as a polemicist, specifically commissioned by the Church to defend orthodox doctrine against the challenge of the reformers – a task on which he expended some million words in the period between his tract against Luther in 1523 and the changed circumstances which induced a more devotional literary mode in the much acclaimed Tower Works.

Abstract (sommario):
The isle of Utopia might be seen as a possible earthly Paradise, achieved by enlightened people in quest of perfection on earth. It has most of the elements of an urban paradise but there remain aspects of the postlapsarian working world. In no way is it Eden. This paper will look for unexpected paradisiacal elements in Thomas More’s writings and propose an assessment of his representations of after-life. A rapid survey of his major works will show the evolution of a lifetime in quest of heaven, and will attempt to draw a draught of More’s Paradise and of the road leading to it.

For these redshifts, the data of observed apparent magnitude and luminosity distance are used for the comparison with the obtained theoretical values.

Abstract (sommario):
The Japanese kana script represents morae by assigning either graphs or digraphs. Kana digraphs are characteristic in that they each comprise two mora-bearing graphs and yet correspond to single morae. This paper develops a structural analysis of kana digraphs, in which the monomoraic value of every digraph is consistently derived from the bimoraic value of a two-graph string. It is argued that the derivational process involves two events, namely cancellation of moraicity in the first mora and amalgamation of all relevant segments into the resultant single mora. This accounts for the observed fact that each constituent of a kana digraph regularly corresponds to one portion of a single mora. The validity of the analysis is supported by evidence drawn from two orthographic phenomena, namely positioning of diacritics and use of a common constituent in digraphs denoting partially isomorphic morae.

The present article is an attempt to clarify the relationship of the place where Isaac was bound with the site of Solomon's Temple, and that of the “land of Moriah” ([Gen 22:2]) with “Mount Moriah” ([2 Chr 3:1]) in Hebrew Bible historiography. It will also suggest an explanation both for the failure of 1 Kings 6 to give the precise location of the Temple and for the fact that such details are to be found in the parallel passage, 2 Chronicles 3.

Abstract (sommario):
This study constitutes an identification of the protagonist’s struggle in H. G. Wells’ novel The Island of Doctor Moreau. This study discusses the story of an English shipwreck survivor named Edward Prendick who is rescued from an accident and taken to an unnamed island to be mended by Montgomery. He is a man of science who works for Doctor Moreau in the island. The story deals with Prendick’s struggle to maintain his sanity due to Doctor Moreau terrifyingly peculiar works of vivisection practices. This study focuses on Doctor Moreau through Prendick’s point of view. Prendick, as the protagonist, experiences both internal and external struggle. He has to choose between saving his life or to obey Dr. Moreau to do his evil bidding. Otherwise, he has to keep his composure to blend with the island people. This study adopts descriptive qualitative method to characterise the mental struggle experienced by the protagonist. The study concludes that the protagonist experiences significant amount of both internal and external struggle throughout the story. The recommendation of this story is a moral lesson. The lesson is to face struggle head-on so you can defeat it. Hopefully, this study can be of relevance in future studies regarding the topic discussed in this study.

"On the Despotate of the Morea’s Service: The Participation of Albanian Population in the Political Events in the Peloponnesos in the First Half of the Fifteenth Century". Античная древность и средние века 50 (2022): 357–70. http://dx.doi.org/10.15826/adsv.2022.50.021.

Abstract (sommario):
In the late fourteenth century, Albanian tribes moved from Thessaly and settled in the Peloponnesos getting the permission from the Despotes of the Morea, Theodore I Palaiologos (1383–1407). Although this migration changed the ethnic situation in the despotate, it solved some economic and demographic problems. In particular, the Albanians replenished the army of the despotes. This article analyzes the participation of the Albanian tribes in the political events in the Despotate of Morea in the first half of the fifteenth century. The aim is to reveal whether the Albanian warriors really got a privileged status in the Morea and to determine their significance for the policy of the despotai of the Morea. The source base of this research is the fifteenth-century Byzantine epistolary and narrative sources, as well as the official documentation of the rulers of the Morea. It has been revealed that the Byzantine despotai actively encouraged the Albanians to military service, thus contributing to their promotion in the despotate. A significant number of Albanians were involved in the defense of the peninsula from the Ottoman Turks. Despite the privileges granted to their leaders, the Albanians remained strangers to the Romaioi: as long as the mid-fifteenth century, they were a particular ethnic group of the population of the Morea; as soon as they got an opportunity, the Albanians rebelled against the Byzantine rulers and declared themselves as an independent political force of the Morea.

Abstract (sommario):
Erasmus was a biographer not only of Jerome but, through four of his letters, of More also. The subject of ancestry is treated similarly by Erasmus writing of Jerome and by More writing of Pico. Erasmus stresses the training in rhetoric and letters, in languages, scriptural study, and patristics of both Jerome and More. The author explores the identification of writers with their subject, and then focuses on similar attitudes of Jerome, Erasmus, and More regarding the education of women and the dangers of heresy.
