Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
A recent book about Agricola's conquest of Scotland presents a Scottish historian's take on a subject that has been dominated by archaeologists: the whereabouts of Mons Graupius, the scene of Agricola's final battle. Unfortunately, in confidently locating it in Perthshire, author James Fraser builds his case on shaky foundations.

Abstract (sommario):
Much recent work on the auxiliary units of the Roman army has concentrated on the cavalry, including their role and effectiveness in battle. Experimental archaeology has additionally illustrated how effective the cavalry could be with the Celtic style saddle, in spite of the lack of stirrups. As a result, the Roman cavalry is now seen by some modern commentators as something of an elite wing of the army. The auxiliary infantryman, on the other hand, is generally regarded as nothing better than foreign expendable ‘cannon-fodder’. This view, it seems, has its origin partly in Tacitus' famous commentary on the tactics of his father-in-law Agricola at Mons Graupius. There is, in fact, little other evidence to support this view, and Agricola probably had other reasons for his dispositions at the battle which his biographer does not mention. Rather than merely a piece of ‘cannon-fodder’, the auxiliary infantryman of the Principate should instead be seen as a competent fighting soldier who fulfilled an invaluable role in the Roman army.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper examines a report describing conflict between Saxons and Britons in the Irish life of Finnian of Clonard. It connects this report to the battle at Llongborth, remembered in an early medieval Welsh poem, and to the siege of 'mons' Badonicus, reported by a variety of early medieval insular historians. Both battles have been linked to the legendary King Arthur. In connecting these battles to an entry in 'Anglo-Saxon Chronicle' and to the immediate context of Gildas' 'De excidio Britanniae', this article offers a date for 'mons Badonicus' in the early 480s and conjectures that the 'Age of Arthur', if historical, postdates the publication of 'De excidio'.

Abstract (sommario):
Recent years have seen increased interest in the professional use of wargames, and wargames are a potential tool to enable a better understanding of past urban conflicts and to plan for future urban security. Whilst access to professional wargames are limited, hobby wargames have been identified as useful and closely related areas to study. Previous work has identified around 214 manual hobby wargames that deal with urban conflict, but only 5 battles are covered by 5 or more wargames, and so provide a reasonable sample for comparative reviews. The battle of Hue battle had many of the hallmarks of a modern urban battle, with both symmetric and asymmetric opposition, combined arms, a civilian and media presence, and the use of innovative technology. This article examines how 5 different wargame designers have approached the Battle of Hue, and how their design choices relate to the key characteristic of the Battle of Hue. The article also identifies where the principal deficiencies are. The article concludes by considering the issues highlighted by these games that wargaming has in representing urban conflict, and how these could be addressed in order to make wargaming a more useful tool to model urban conflict and security.

Abstract (sommario):
This article restores the battle route of the Tuvan volunteer Sengii Oyun who was listed as missing in action for 78 years, based on archival materials. In 1943, the Tuvan People’s Republic sent its volunteers to the Soviet-German front. Among those volunteers, who had to pass a rigorous selection to earn the right to fight on the side of the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany, was Sengii Chymchak oglu Oyun. In November 1943, after combat training in replacement troops, the volunteers joined the 4th squadron of the 31st Guards Cavalry Regiment of the 8th Guards Cavalry Division. S.C. Oyun participated in the battles of Derazhno, Rovno, Dubno in Ukraine, especially distinguishing himself in the battle near Dubno. In June 1944, Tuvan volunteers returned to their homeland, but Sengii Oyun was not among them. He had been listed as missing in action until 2022, and it is not until after the request of his relatives, owing to painstaking work of the employees of the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, that his battle route was restored. Sengii Oyun and some of his fellow soldiers had got behind their troops’ train, following which he was appointed a machine gunner of the 95th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 31st Guards Rifle Division. In the summer of 1944, he took part in the battles for the liberation of Belorussia and Lithuania. Sengii Chymchak oglu Oyun died on October 21, 1944 in a battle in Eastern Prussia.

Abstract (sommario):
The Battle and Landing of Normandy 1944 was four years in the making. General Dwight D. Eisenhower as the Allied Commander wanted the invasion of Normandy, D-Day to be carried out immediately, but the operation plan almost failed due to bad weather. The Battle of Normandy 1944 began with the German conquest of France and the Allies wanted to free France from German occupation. The writing methodology uses a descriptive method by analyzing the facts that occurred at the Battle of Normandy 1944 supported by literature studies, literature, and scientific journals. Meanwhile, Maritime Meteorological information at the time of the Normandy 1944 landing was obtained from the analysis of weather reports and literature studies. From this incident, it can be concluded that the TNI, especially the Navy, must take maritime weather into account in supporting operations at sea and needs to collaborate with BMKG to obtain Maritime Meteorological information. BMKG provides impact-based maritime weather that issues weather impact map information to sailing ships. The Impact-Based Weather Map provided will provide a color that indicates the risk status of maritime weather based on the type of ship, which can help TNI-AL's equipment in navigation at sea. Maritime Meteorological information and data are obtained using BMKG's ocean prediction model - Ocean Forecasting System (BMKG - OFS) and BMKG's InaWIS (Indonesia Weather Information for Shipping). The InaWIS system is integrated with the Automatic Identification System (AIS) shipping navigation data that will be able to identify ship risks to maritime weather such as wind, currents, and waves. InaWIS is also equipped with real-time weather observation data that is able to model sea predictions for the next 10 (ten) days which makes it easier for TNI AL's equipment to navigate at sea to avoid areas that have the potential for extreme weather and also to support landing operations.

Abstract (sommario):
Urban warfare tends to be intimate. If soldiers do not see the faces of those they kill—and they frequently will—those men and women will hear the screams or muffled groans of the wounded. US forces waging the battle to recapture Manila in 1945 experienced these horrors. Yet it was the noncombatants who suffered far more; 100,000—approximately one of every ten Manileños at the time—died during the fighting. Thousands more suffered wounds, disease, or struggled with hunger and malnutrition. Recent fighting in Syria, Ukraine, Khartoum, and elsewhere tells us too little has changed three-quarters of a century later. Though urban warfare is a special case of disaster, its lessons are relevant when floods, earthquakes, typhoons, or other forms of crisis strike a city. This article goes beyond confrontations between enemies and the resultant civilian suffering to identify the challenges inherent in preserving noncombatant life during and in the aftermath of these clashes. Whatis targeted will impact both immediate and longer-term recovery just as will decisions regarding howa force inflicts destruction. The lessons of 1945 have much to tell today’s and future leaders preparing for, responding to, and guiding recovery from combat and other forms of urban catastrophe.

Abstract (sommario):
Although conflict archaeology is now well established, the archaeological remains of many specific military confrontations are still to be explored. This article reports the results of fieldwork to document the site of the Battle of the Bulge (16 December 1944–25 January 1945). The authors use drone-mounted 1m-resolution LiDAR and very high-resolution simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) methods to reveal more than 940 features within the forested Ardennes landscape, many of which were subsequently visited and confirmed. As well as highlighting the potential of the LiDAR-SLAM method, deployed here (both in this geographic region and in conflict archaeology) for the first time, the survey results emphasise the need for a debate on managing the heritage of a key modern conflict landscape in Europe.

Abstract (sommario):
Proxy wars dominate modern war fighting. Despite the frequency of proxy wars on today's battle field, the strategic studies community lacks sufficient models and strategic theories to frame proxy wars from the strategic level. This works seeks to build on the limited amount of preexisting theoretical work on proxy war by introducing five models of proxy relation - coerced, transactional, cultural, exploitative, and contractual. This models help policymakers, strategists, and practitioners understand and navigate through the strategic workings of today's proxy wars.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACTDuring the Second World War, controversy surrounded not the inevitability of psychiatric casualties but the extent to which they could be minimized by selection, training, morale, and leadership. By early 1944, when planning for the D-Day landings was advanced, the problem of the psychiatric battle casualty was considered manageable by careful preparation and clinical understanding. The campaign to liberate Europe offered the newly formed Directorate of Army Psychiatry an opportunity to demonstrate its effectiveness. Psychiatric services were deployed to Normandy to maximize the return of front-line troops to duty. Commanders, however, entertained doubts about the value of military psychiatrists. By offering a sanctioned escape route from battle, some believed that their mere presence undermined the fighting spirit of combat troops. The records of 32 General (Psychiatric) Hospital have been analysed to discover categories of troops most vulnerable to breakdown and to assess the impact of front-line treatments. Infantry soldiers, those most likely to be killed, were disproportionately represented amongst admissions. Senior non-commissioned officers were also at elevated risk of breakdown, some being war weary from earlier campaigns. Probably 36 per cent of admissions returned to combatant duty, and 53 per cent were evacuated to the UK. The scale of psychiatric casualties revealed failures in pre-deployment screening.

Abstract (sommario):
The autumn 1944 ‘Ern Malley’ edition of Max Harris's Angry Penguins was a defining moment in Australian cultural history for more than one reason. To add to the exposure of the Malley hoax in June 1944, Harris found himself in August having to defend charges of ‘indecent advertisements’ (Heyward, 184). Harris's partner in publishing Angry Penguins, John Reed, wrote in a letter of 5 September 1944 — the day the trial began in the Adelaide Magistrates Court — that the ‘indictment includes 7 of the Malley poems, all of Max's, the Cowan and Stivens stories and Collinson's poem’ (Reed, 367). The 19-year-old Brisbanite Laurence Collinson had conjured up a typically dramatic moment to announce his entry onto the national cultural stage — stumbling into a bit part in a drama that was both a crucial battle in the war between Australian literary modernists and traditionalists, and a worthy local precursor to Britain's Lady Chatterley trial of 1959.

Chornyi, Oleksandr. "The Battles of Kryvyi Rih and Nikopol on the Background of the German-Soviet Confrontation on the Dnieper in Autumn 1943 — Winter 1944". Kyiv Historical Studies 17, n. 2 (2023): 72–81. http://dx.doi.org/10.28925/2524-0757.2023.29.

Abstract (sommario):
Within the scope of the offered publication, the author states that the battles of Kryvyi Rih and Nikopol are a component of the Battle of the Dnieper, as their course is connected with the elimination of the Nikopol bridgehead, the overcoming of the river south of the Dnieper, the expansion of bridgeheads on its right bank, and the establishment of Soviet control over the Nikopol and Kryvyi Rih industrial basins German-Soviet confrontation in the Kryvyi Rih and Nikopol directions is much wider in time than is generally considered in the historiography of the war, and covers the events not from the end of January to the end of February 1944, but dates back to October 15, 1943 — February 29, 1944. The researcher proves that the extremely difficult and long-term struggle of the opponents for Kryvyi Rih and Nikopol was due to two reasons — a possible Wehrmacht counterattack in the lower reaches of the Dnieper to unblock the 17th German Army in the Crimea and the need to control iron ore and manganese ore deposits, as the main resources for the defense industry of both the USSR and Germany. The author emphasizes that the battle of Kryvyi Rih and Nikopol lasted two and a half times longer than the “world-historical” battle of Kursk. Within the scope of the article, the issue of revising the postulates rooted in Soviet and post-Soviet historical science about the turning point in the German-Soviet confrontation on the Eastern Front, which allegedly took place near Stalingrad and the Kursk salient in the first half — the middle of 1943, is raised. The article suggests that the Red Army actually succeeded in breaking the German military machine not at the Kursk Offensive, but during the Battle of the Dnieper. The study was prepared on the basis of previously unknown (once secret) archival documents and materials published in the post-Soviet period, which makes the arguments and conclusions presented here relevant.
