Abstract (sommario):
We address the problem of retrieving a specific moment from an untrimmed video by a query sentence. This is a challenging problem because a target moment may take place in relations to other temporal moments in the untrimmed video. Existing methods cannot tackle this challenge well since they consider temporal moments individually and neglect the temporal dependencies. In this paper, we model the temporal relations between video moments by a two-dimensional map, where one dimension indicates the starting time of a moment and the other indicates the end time. This 2D temporal map can cover diverse video moments with different lengths, while representing their adjacent relations. Based on the 2D map, we propose a Temporal Adjacent Network (2D-TAN), a single-shot framework for moment localization. It is capable of encoding the adjacent temporal relation, while learning discriminative features for matching video moments with referring expressions. We evaluate the proposed 2D-TAN on three challenging benchmarks, i.e., Charades-STA, ActivityNet Captions, and TACoS, where our 2D-TAN outperforms the state-of-the-art.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract If ω is a closed G-invariant 2-form and μ is a moment map, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for equivariant prequantizability that can be computed in terms of the moment map μ. Our main result is that G-equivariant prequantizability is related to the fact that the moment map μ should be quantized for certain vectors on the Lie algebra of G. We also compute the obstructions to lift the action of G to a prequantization bundle of ω. Our results are valid for any compact and connected Lie group G.

Abstract (sommario):
We consider a G-invariant star-product algebra A on a symplectic manifold (M,ω) obtained by a canonical construction of deformation quantization. Under assumptions of the classical Marsden-Weinstein theorem we define a reduction of the algebra A with respect to the G-action. The reduced algebra turns out to be isomorphic to a canonical star-product algebra on the reduced phase space B. In other words, we show that the reduction commutes with the canonical G-invariant deformation quantization. A similar statement in the framework of geometric quantization is known as the Guillemin-Sternberg conjecture (by now completely proved).

Abstract (sommario):
For loading of excavator drive units, it is necessary to use electromechanical loads with a high torque up to 16,000 Nm in a low speed range from 0 to 150 min-1 with a maximum output of 50 kW. The electromechanical load consists of an asynchronous dynamometer assembly with a tilting torque measurement system in conjunction with a front three-speed gearbox. The dynamometer is powered by a converter with vector control. To determine the torque at the gearbox output, a correction must be made and the influence of operating temperature and operating speed must be taken into account. Experimental measurement of these influences and dependencies makes it possible to create a mathematical model that can be implemented in the power converter for torque control at the output of the gearbox. The aim of the master thesis is a brief design of the loading drive, design an implementation of experimental measurement of efficiency maps and evaluation of the influence of inefficiency of gearbox efficiency.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is mainly concerned with the study of hypersymplectic structures in gauge theory. These structures arise via applications of the hypersymplectic quotient construction to the action of the gauge group on certain spaces of connections and Higgs fields. Motivated by Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondences in the case of hyperkähler moduli spaces, we first study the relationship between hypersymplectic, complex and paracomplex quotients in the spirit of Kirwan's work relating Kähler quotients to GIT quotients. We then study dimensional reductions of the ASD equations on $mathbb R^{2,2}$. We discuss a version of twistor theory for hypersymplectic manifolds, which we use to put the ASD equations into Lax form. Next, we study Schmid's equations from the viewpoint of hypersymplectic quotients and examine the local product structure of the moduli space. Then we turn towards the integrability aspects of this system. We deduce various properties of the spectral curve associated to a solution and provide explicit solutions with cyclic symmetry. Hitchin's harmonic map equations are the split signature analogue of the self-duality equations on a Riemann surface, in which case it is known that there is a smooth hyperkähler moduli space. In the case at hand, we cannot expect to obtain a globally well-behaved moduli space. However, we are able to construct a smooth open set of solutions with small Higgs field, on which we then analyse the hypersymplectic geometry. In particular, we exhibit the local product structures and the family of complex structures. This is done by interpreting the equations as describing certain geodesics on the moduli space of unitary connections. Using this picture we relate the degeneracy locus to geodesics with conjugate endpoints. Finally, we present a split signature version of the ADHM construction for so-called split signature instantons on $S^2 imes S^2$, which can be given an interpretation as a hypersymplectic quotient.

Zergane, Amel. "Séparation des représentations des groupes de Lie par des ensembles moments". Thesis, Dijon, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011DIJOS086/document.

Abstract (sommario):
To a unitary irreducible representation (π,H) of a Lie group G, is associated a moment map Ψπ. The closure of the range of Ψπ is the moment set of π. Generally, this set is Conv(Oπ), if Oπ is the corresponding coadjoint orbit. Unfortunately, it does not characterize π : 2 distincts orbits can have the same closed convex hull. We can overpass this di culty, by considering an overgroup G+ for G and a non linear map ø from g* into (g+)* such that, for generic orbits, ø(O) is an orbit and Conv( ø(O)) characterizes O. In the present thesis, we show that we can choose the pair (G+,ø), with deg ø ≤2 for all the nilpotent groups with dimension ≤6, except one, for all solvable groups with diemnsion ≤4, and for an example of motion group. Then we study the G=SL(n,R) case. For these groups, there exists ø with deg ø =n, if n>2, there is no such ø with deg ø=2, if n=4, there is no such ø with deg ø=3. Finally, we show that the moment map Ψπ is coming from a stronly Hamiltonian G-action on the Frécht symplectic manifold PH∞. We build a functor, which associates to each G an infi nite diemnsional Fréchet-Lie overgroup G̃,and, to each π a strongly Hamiltonian action, whose moment set characterizes π

Pierce, Sarah. "'It's time man. It feels imminent' : politics at the moment of exposition". Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2015. http://research.gold.ac.uk/11213/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This PhD is written in the context of the Curatorial/Knowledge programme at Goldsmiths College. It deals foremost with a conversation between art practice and the curatorial, where a thesis emerges as a consideration of art practice as more than just the work of an artist. In the context of the dissertation, art practice “stages” tensions between official, institutional and situated knowledge and knowledges that are unpredictable, unfixed, and uncontained — tensions that are at the heart of what is meant by “curatorial/knowledge. ” I make a distinction between the exhibition as a bracketed, temporally bound event, and “the moment of exposition” as a fleeting, intimacy that occurs unexpectedly and unintentionally as our exposure to the Other. The moment of exposition involves an exposure that is not necessarily formalised or even actualised in the exhibition, but like the exhibition involves some degree of publicness. A main question of the dissertation asks how regimes of legibility, efficacy, and legitimacy limit inhabitations of the political; and conversely, how remaining at the margins of institution is a way of “being” political. Part of this investigation involves differences between practices, not to be glossed over — differences that are key to the curatorial as a political mode of “being. ” The submission is made up of three main elements that form a textual/theoretical, material/archival work. These are: (1) A dimension of critical writing or dissertation that has two large sections: (a) The Learning Community (b) The Community of the Exhibition (2) Four appendices related to projects that took place in parallel to the writing. (3) An archive, which presents a major component of research in the form of a book project carried out wholly in the context of my doctoral research. Sketches of Universal History Compiled from Many Authors by Sarah Pierce (London: Book Works, 2013) demonstrates a primary analytic situation for the problematics of my research.

Abstract (sommario):
We developed a tsunami hazard map for supporting evacuation guidance which is intended for government use. The evacuation behavior simulator achieved in making changes in every moment with an analysis that unifies evacuation behavior simulation and tsunami propagation simulation, as this enables the calculation of the difficult evacuation zones. This paper offers a practice case study for Shimizu ward, Shimizu city, Shizuoka prefecture, in Japan. The difficult evacuation zone was around Yokosuna-nishi-machi in the northwest part of the study site. The simulation conditions included walking speed and evacuation direction, which was verified for this difficult evacuation zone. This is effective for evacuation toward inland, especially elevated ground which doesn’t become inundated by tsunami. In this paper, the results of simulations were reflected in a hazard map. Then we propose the hazard map as intended for the government, for supporting evacuation guidance in a tsunami.

Abstract (sommario):
The shape control of thin, flexible structures has been studied primarily for edge-supported thin-plates. For applications such as electromagnetic wave reflectors, corner-supported configurations may prove more applicable since they allow for greater flexibility and larger achievable deflections when compared to edge-supported geometries under similar actuation conditions. Models of such structures provide insight for effective, realizable designs, enable design optimization, and provide a means of active shape control. Models for small deformations of corner-supported, thin laminates actuated by integrated piezoelectric actuators have been developed. However, membrane deflections expected for nominal actuation exceed those stipulated by linear, small deflection theories. In addition, large deflection models have been developed for membranes; however these models are not formulated for shape control. This paper extends a previously-developed linear model for a corner-supported thin, rectangular laminate to a more general large deflection model for a clamped-corner laminate composed of moment actuators and an array of actuating electrodes. First, a nonlinear model determining the deflected shape of a laminate given a distribution of actuation voltages is derived. Second, a technique is employed to formulate the model as a map between input voltage and deflection alone, making it suitable for shape control. Finally, comparisons of simulated deflections with measured deflections of a fabricated active laminate are investigated.

Abstract (sommario):
How do we assess the capability of a compliant mechanism of given topology and shape? The kinetoelastostatic maps proposed in this paper help answer this question. These maps are drawn in 2D using two non-dimensional quantities, one capturing the nonlinear static response and the other the geometry, material, and applied forces. Geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis is used to create the maps for compliant mechanisms consisting of slender beams. In addition to the topology and shape, the overall proportions and the proportions of the cross-sections of the beam segments are kept fixed for a map. The finite region of the map is parameterized using a non-dimensional quantity defined as the slenderness ratio. The shape and size of the map and the parameterized curves inside it indicate the complete kinetoelastostatic capability of the corresponding compliant mechanism of given topology, shape, and fixed proportions. Static responses considered in this paper include input/output displacement, geometric amplification, mechanical advantage, maximum stress, etc. The maps can be used to compare mechanisms, to choose a suitable mechanism for an application, or re-design as may be needed. The usefulness of the non-dimensional maps is presented with multiple applications of different variety. Non-dimensional portrayal of snap-through mechanisms is one such example. The effect of the shape of the cross-section of the beam segments and the role of different segments in the mechanism as well as extension to 3D compliant mechanisms, the cases of multiple inputs and outputs, and moment loads are also explained. The effects of disproportionate changes on the maps are also analyzed.

Abstract (sommario):
Unique maps of the atlas of Poland compiled by G.A.B. Rizzi-Zannoni in the middle of the 18th century and published in early 1772 are important scientific sources. The atlas contains detailed information on the historical geography of the Northern and North-Western Black Sea region. Of particular importance is the unique map of Moldavia and the territories adjacent to it (the 23rd, as well as the 22nd and 24th sheets of the atlas), compiled based on earlier sources – the rich cartographic materials of the predecessors (G.L. Beauplan, D.K. Cantemir and others), and first of all, the works of the cartographers of the Ottoman Empire, which flourished in the 15th – 17th centuries, have not yet been identified or studied. The work of Rizzi-Zannoni is a reproduction of the oldest (found at the moment) topographic map of the North-Western Black Sea region, reflecting the geographical picture no later than the first half of the 16th – second half of the 17th centuries. Current and further study of the fortifications (castles, fortresses and other fortifications) marked on the maps of Rizzi-Zannoni and representing the most important complexes and objects of historical and cultural heritage are impossible without the involvement of the author’s unique information. Descriptions and reconstructions of fortifications that ignore topography and other details reported by this unique source are a priori incomplete or may even be erroneous. The historic-geographical information recorded on the Rizzi-Zannoni maps is of enormous multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary significance. Its consideration is important for modern and future studies of geography, history, archaeology, architecture, culture, art, ethnography, linguistics, the toponymy of the region as a whole and each heritage site.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In this work, global analysis of ship rolling motion as effected by parametric excitation is studied. The parametric excitation results from the roll restoring moment variation as a wave train passes. In addition to the parametric excitation, an external periodic wave excitation and steady wind bias are also included in the analysis. The roll motion is the most critical motion for a ship because of the possibility of capsizing. The boundaries in the Poincaré map which separate initial conditions which eventually evolve to bounded steady state solutions and those which lead to unbounded capsizing motion are studied. The changes in these boundaries or manifolds as effected by changes in the ship and environmental conditions are analyzed. The region in the Poincaré map which lead to bounded steady state motions is called the safe basin. The size of this safe basin is a measure of the vessel’s resistance to capsizing.

Abstract (sommario):
This work compares different approaches (i.e. fault distribution patterns) that aim to explain how a gas turbine compressor gets fouled and how its corresponding performance map deteriorates. To do so, a series of such maps is first developed based on an updated “stage-stacking” methodology. Then, the maps so developed are affected by fouling using the aforementioned approaches. The results evidence that the lack of consensus with respect to how fouling proceeds is bond to yield engine performances that differ by large. In other words, there is still a lot of work to be done if a general approach to anticipate the quantity and quality of compressor fouling is to be developed. For the moment, all the systematic analyses are specific to the particular site where they have been applied and hence have no generality that can be extended elsewhere. Moreover, the methodologies available allow that a fouled compressor be identified and the distribution be predicted a posteriori by means of adaptive modelling and compressor zooming utilising measurements from the whole engine or by using compressor specific measurements.

Abstract (sommario):
Panel based hydrodynamic analyses are well suited for transferring seakeeping loads to 3D FEM structural models. However, 3D panel based hydrodynamic analyses are computationally expensive. For monohull ships, methods based on strip theory have been successfully used in industry for many years. They are computationally efficient, and they provide good prediction for motions and hull girder loads. However, many strip theory methods provide only hull girder sectional forces and moments, such as vertical bending moment and vertical shear force, which are difficult to apply to 3D finite element structural models. For the few codes which do output panel pressure, transferring the pressure map from a hydrodynamic model to the corresponding 3D finite element model often results in an unbalanced structural model because of the pressure interpolation discrepancy. To obtain equilibrium of an imbalanced structural model, a common practice is to use the “inertia relief” approach to rebalance the model. However, this type of balancing causes a change in the hull girder load distribution, which in turn could cause inaccuracies in an extreme load analysis (ELA) and a spectral fatigue analysis (SFA). This paper presents a method of applying strip theory based linear seakeeping pressure loads to balance 3D finite element models without using inertia relief. The velocity potential of strip sections is first calculated based on hydrodynamic strip theories. The velocity potential of a finite element panel is obtained from the interpolation of the velocity potential of the strip sections. The potential derivative along x-direction is computed using the approach proposed by Salvesen, Tuck and Faltinsen. The hydrodynamic forces and moments are computed using direct panel pressure integration from the finite element structural panel. For forces and moments which cannot be directly converted from pressure, such as hydrostatic restoring force and diffraction force, element nodal forces are generated using Quadratic Programing. The equations of motions are then formulated based on the finite element wetted panels. The method results in a perfectly balanced structural model.

Abstract (sommario):
Prevention of compressor surge is one of the most important tasks in operation of gas turbine engine. The easiest way to see the phenomena is to show the static and dynamic operation characteristic on the map. Its operation zone will be restricted by the surge limit and, static and transient process must have some margin for it. Surge margin of a static regime is normally chosen during its design stage. Safe operation during part load condition without facing the surge is an indispensable task for control system design and a swift response from the engine is required to avoid it. Effect of rotor moment of inertia, air/gas volumes and heat transfer are factors to cause the transition from the static line. In case a large volume such as heat exchanger exists in the system it will exert a substantial influence to dynamic characteristics. In the present paper, influence of air volume bled from the compressor exit on transient process is investigated with an example of an auxiliary power unit micro-turbine engine. A typical compressor characteristic with scaling was used for the calculation. Turbine mass, pressure ratio, rotation speed, power and moment are calculated based on mass and work conservation. Result from the present study can give a guidance to design the control system. A computer program is developed to calculate the dynamic process using the MathCAD commercial software. Air volume is changed from 0.02 to 6 m3.

Abstract (sommario):
Horizontality is a salient social phenomenon of the last decade. It asserts itself against hierarchies in social movements and countless other collective practices around the world. It constitutes a characteristic of an emergent sociality that demands the attention of the social sciences. The 2010s are a moment as important as “the Sixties”, a time when Ivan Illich called for the development of tools of conviviality, and horizontality may be categorized as one of them. Today’s horizontality may be related to that of populations that have been the focus of anthropologists interested in their longstanding propensity to work against the affirmation of the authority of commanding. Public squares, roundabouts, and the courtyards of apartment buildings welcome the early symptoms of democratic experimentation that circulates also among groups, collectivities, and associations with varied purposes. In all these places, equality asserts itself and cuts across differences. The Yellow Vests and an educational cooperative in São Paulo are the empirical foundation of this study.

Abstract (sommario):
Studying earthquakes in Baffin Bay and the surrounding regions is challenging. There is no knowledge of earthquake activity in this region prior to 1933 when a moment magnitude (MW) 7.4 earthquake occurred in Baffin Bay. With improved instrumentation, increased seismograph coverage in the north, and modern analysis techniques, knowledge and understanding of earthquakes in the Baffin region is improving. Active seismic zones include Baffin Bay, the east coast of Baffin Island, and the Labrador Sea, separated by areas of low seismicity. Focal-mechanism solutions show a mix of faulting styles, predominantly strike-slip and thrust. Regional stress-axes orientations show more consistency, which suggests that activity is occurring on previously existing structures in response to the current stress field. There is little correlation between earthquake epicentres in Baffin Bay and mapped structures. Glacial isostatic adjustment may be a triggering mechanism for earthquakes in the Baffin region, but modelling efforts have yielded equivocal results.

Abstract (sommario):
The project exploits the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to describe infiltration, water, and solute distribution in the soil during irrigation. It provides a method of simulating water and solute movement in the subsurface which, in principle, is different and has some advantages over the more common approach of numerical modeling of flow and transport equations. The five objectives were (i) Numerically develop a database for the prediction of water and solute distribution for irrigation; (ii) Develop predictive models using ANN; (iii) Develop an experimental (laboratory) database of water distribution with time; within a transparent flow cell by high resolution CCD video camera; (iv) Conduct field studies to provide basic data for developing and testing the ANN; and (v) Investigate the inclusion of water quality [salinity and organic matter (OM)] in an ANN model used for predicting infiltration and subsurface water distribution. A major accomplishment was the successful use of Moment Analysis (MA) to characterize “plumes of water” applied by various types of irrigation (including drip and gravity sources). The general idea is to describe the subsurface water patterns statistically in terms of only a few (often 3) parameters which can then be predicted by the ANN. It was shown that ellipses (in two dimensions) or ellipsoids (in three dimensions) can be depicted about the center of the plume. Any fraction of water added can be related to a ‘‘probability’’ curve relating the size of the ellipse (or ellipsoid) that contains that amount of water. The initial test of an ANN to predict the moments (and hence the water plume) was with numerically generated data for infiltration from surface and subsurface drip line and point sources in three contrasting soils. The underlying dataset consisted of 1,684,500 vectors (5 soils×5 discharge rates×3 initial conditions×1,123 nodes×20 print times) where each vector had eleven elements consisting of initial water content, hydraulic properties of the soil, flow rate, time and space coordinates. The output is an estimate of subsurface water distribution for essentially any soil property, initial condition or flow rate from a drip source. Following the formal development of the ANN, we have prepared a “user-friendly” version in a spreadsheet environment (in “Excel”). The input data are selected from appropriate values and the output is instantaneous resulting in a picture of the resulting water plume. The MA has also proven valuable, on its own merit, in the description of the flow in soil under laboratory conditions for both wettable and repellant soils. This includes non-Darcian flow examples and redistribution and well as infiltration. Field experiments were conducted in different agricultural fields and various water qualities in Israel. The obtained results will be the basis for the further ANN models development. Regions of high repellence were identified primarily under the canopy of various orchard crops, including citrus and persimmons. Also, increasing OM in the applied water lead to greater repellency. Major scientific implications are that the ANN offers an alternative to conventional flow and transport modeling and that MA is a powerful technique for describing the subsurface water distributions for normal (wettable) and repellant soil. Implications of the field measurements point to the special role of OM in affecting wettability, both from the irrigation water and from soil accumulation below canopies. Implications for agriculture are that a modified approach for drip system design should be adopted for open area crops and orchards, and taking into account the OM components both in the soil and in the applied waters.

Abstract (sommario):
According to federal law, routine commercial vehicles must adhere to certain limits on their load configuration in order to operate legally on interstate highways. However, states may allow for heavier or different load configurations provided that bridges on the state and county highway system are load rated and, if necessary, posted with vehicles that appropriately represent these loads. The state of Indiana allows several classes of vehicles to operate with loads that exceed federal limits, and, presently, several LFD design loads are used to represent these exceptions as state legal loads. This study evaluates the MBE rating loads for their ability to encompass Indiana’s exception vehicles and recommends a set of state rating loads which can replace the current state legal loads and, combined with the MBE rating loads, satisfactorily encompass the load effects due to these exceptions. Comparing moment and shear envelopes on a representative set of bridges, the MBE rating vehicles were found to be insufficient for representing Indiana’s exception vehicles. Three new rating loads are proposed which encompass the exception vehicles efficiently and represent realistic legal loads. Conversely, acceptable HS-20 rating factors are also provided as an alternative to the adoption of these new vehicles. These rating factors, all 1.0 or greater, can ensure a similar level of safety by requiring a specific amount of excess capacity for the HS-20 design load.
