Abstract (sommario):
The astringent taste is important for the sensory quality of beverages. Perception thresholds of two important astringent compounds – tannic acid and (+)-catechin were determined using two procedures. The concentration-intensity dependence was linear at low concentrations and up to medium intensities of the astringent taste if unstructured graphical scales were used, but the saturation threshold was soon attained in the case of tannic acid. Recording the results on printed forms gave similar results as using a touch-sensitive monitor. The optimum tasting was achieved at swallowing after degustation of 5 s. The duration of degustation increased the intensity. The astringent flavour was suppressed by sugar, but was not significantly influenced by ethanol, citric acid or quinine hydrochloride. Astringent substances were accurately perceived and rated in wine, tea infusion and orange drink, but the increase of astringency was smaller than in model solutions. The astringent taste was easily distinguished from the bitter taste.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: Crowd logistics is a widely accepted concept in times of the growing popularity of sharing economy solutions. The popularity of e-commerce and a tendency to provide same-day delivery are the main reasons for their development. Developing those trends requires new products and services, now available on the market, known in the transport area as crowd logistics solutions. Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to provide a tool for assessing crowd-logistics solutions, taking into consideration customers’ requirements. The text includes groups of environmental, economic, and social criteria to facilitate the choice of the best crowd logistics solution for freight transport. Methodology: The research is based on the critical analysis of different sources (literature, European Commission reports, other reports and analyses) and practical solutions in the field of crowd logistics. The main data analysis method is the Analytic Hierarchy Process, usually used to evaluate variants in decision-making processes. This method was chosen because of the variety of data types (quantitative and qualitative) and formats, its popularity, universality, and replicability. Results: This paper contains ready-to-use weights for the assessment of crowd logistics solutions. The proposed set of criteria and weights can be a useful tool for customers to evaluate the sharing- -economy services landscape in the areas they manage.

Abstract (sommario):
Filtration processes of liquid solutions are fundamental in many natural and industrial applications, such as environmental protection, chemical engineering, water purification, and petroleum extraction. This article develops a mathematical model for describing filtration processes and explores various numerical methods for solving the governing equations. The model is based on Darcy’s law, continuity equation, and constitutive relations of liquid solutions in porous media. Numerical methods, including finite difference, finite element, and finite volume approaches, are discussed with applications to various filtration scenarios. We also provide analysis of the stability, convergence, and efficiency of these methods.

Here is a method of representing quadratic functions by three-dimensional wire models. It enables one to form a simple geometric concept of the location of the imaginary zeros. I have been using this material with my students and have been delighted with the ease with which they respond to it. As a result, their confidence in dealing with complex numbers has increased, their concept of functions has shown much improvement, and they are attacking problems with real insight.

Abstract (sommario):
This report presents the general Ising model and its basic assumptions. This study aims to, from diagonalization of the Transfer Matrix, obtain the Helmholtz free energy and the exclusion of a phase transition for the one-dimensional Ising model under an external magnetic field. Furthermore from establishing the commutation relations of the Transfer matrices and using the Kramers-Wannier duality one finds the free energy and the presence of a phase transition for the square-lattice Ising model.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Nonperturbative solutions to the Hubbard model are found by using the functional derivative method. A system of closed equations is obtained for the Green's functions of the Hubbard model. Exact expressions for the self-energy are derived which involve only first order functional derivatives. A scheme is proposed for systematically calculating self-energy corrections. We apply the solution to finite rings of two and four lattice sites and compare to the results of numerical calculations on these systems.

Alzahrani, Abdulah. "Local travelling wave solutions and self-similar solutions for a green roof model." Thesis, Heriot-Watt University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10399/2776.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In this thesis we study travelling wave solutions and self-similar solutions for a green roof model and for some simpler models which are derived from that model. We focus on two limiting cases near a dry region and near a saturated region. We start by considering a convection model in the absence of diffusion and sink terms. We show that rarefaction waves and shock solutions exist for several cases. Next, we consider a convection-diffusion model where both the convective and diffusive terms are present and we show that travelling wave solutions and self-similar solutions exist for some cases. Moreover, numerical simulations are used for the travelling wave and self-similar solutions and confirm the analytic predictions. Finally, we consider the green roof model where all terms are present and we show that travelling wave solutions exist, whereas self-similar solutions are not found. We also show the travelling wave solutions exist for the two limiting cases.

Abstract (sommario):
In this thesis, I develop accurate and efficient pseudospectral methods to solve Fisher's, the Fitzhugh-Nagumo and the Beeler-Reuter equations. Based on these methods, I present a study of spiral waves and their interaction with a boundary. The solutions of Fisher's equation are characterized by propagating fronts with a, shock-like wave behavior when large values of the reaction rate coefficient is taken. The pseudospectral method employed for its solution is based on Chebyshev-Gauss-Lobatto quadrature points. I compare results for a single domain as well as for a subdivision of the main domain into subintervals. Instabilities that occur in the numerical solution for a single domain, analogous to those found by others, are attributed to round-off errors arising from numerical features of the discrete second derivative matrix operator. However, accurate stable solutions of Fisher's equation are obtained with a multidomain pseudospectral method. A detailed comparison of the present approach with the use of the sinc interpolation is also carried out. Also, I present a study of the convergence of different numerical schemes in the solution of the Fitzhugh-Nagumo equations. These equations, have spatial and temporal dynamics in two different scales and the solutions exhibit shock-like waves. The numerical schemes employed are Chebyshev multidomain, Fourier pseudospectral, finite difference methods and in particular a method developed by Barkley. I consider two different models of the local dynamics. I present results for plane wave propagation in one dimension and spiral waves for two dimensions. I use an operator splitting method with the Chebyshev multidomain approach in order to reduce the computational time. I conclude this thesis by presenting a study of the interaction of a meandering spiral wave with a boundary, where the Beeler-Reuter model is considered. The phenomenon of annihilation or reflection of a spiral at the boundaries of the domain is studied, when the trajectory of the tip of a spiral wave is essentially linear. This phenomenon is analyzed in terms of the variable j, which controls the reactivation of the sodium channel in the Beeler-Reuter model.
Science, Faculty of
Mathematics, Department of
Graduate

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis proposes a new simulated annealing approach to solve multiple objective sequencing problems in mixed-model assembly lines. Mixed-model assembly lines are a type of production line where a variety of product models similar in product characteristics are assembled. Such an assembly line is increasingly accepted in industry to cope with the recently observed trend of diversification of customer demands. Sequencing problems are important for an efficient use of mixed-model assembly lines. There is a rich of criteria on which to judge sequences of product models in terms of line utilization. We consider three practically important objectives: the goal of minimizing the variation of the actual production from the desired production, which is minimizing usage variation, workload smoothing in order to reduce the chance of production delays and line stoppages and minimizing total set-ups cost. A considerate line manager would like to take into account all these factors. These are important for an efficient operation of mixed-model assembly lines. They work efficiently and find good solution in a very short time, even when the size of the problem is too large. The multiple objective sequencing problems is described and its mathematical formulation is provided. Simulated annealing algorithms are designed for near or optimal solutions and find an efficiency frontier of all efficient design configurations for the problem. This approach combines the SA methodology with a specific neighborhood search, which in the case of this study is a "swapping two sequence". Two annealing methods are proposed based on this approach, which differ only in cooling and freezing schedules. This research used correlation to describe the degree of relationship between results obtained by method B and other heuristics method and also for quality of our algorithm ANOVA's of output is constructed to analyse and evaluate the accuracy of the CPU time taken to determine near or optimal solution.

Floratos, Ioannis. "Multi-Skyrmion solutions of a sixth order Skyrme model." Thesis, Durham University, 2001. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3988/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In this Thesis, we study some of the classical properties of an extension of the Skyrme model defined by adding a sixth order derivative term to the Lagrangian. In chapter 1, we review the physical as well as the mathematical motivation behind the study of the Skyrme model and in chapter 2, we give a brief summary of various extended Skyrme models that have been proposed over the last few years. We then define a new sixth order Skyrme model by introducing a dimensionless parameter λ that denotes the mixing between the two higher order terms, the Skyrme term and the sixth order term. In chapter 3 we compute numerically the multi-skyrmion solutions of this extended model and show that they have the same symmetries with the usual skyrmion solutions. In addition, we analyse the dependence of the energy and radius of these classical solutions with respect to the coupling constant λ. We compare our results with experimental data and determine whether this modified model can provide us with better theoretical predictions than the original one. In chapter 4, we use the rational map ansatz, introduced by Houghton, Manton and Sutcliffe, to approximate minimum energy multi-skyrmion solutions with B ≤ 9 of the SU(2) model and with B ≤ 6 of the SU(3) model. We compare our results with the ones obtained numerically and show that the rational map ansatz works just as well for the generalised model as for the pure Skyrme model, at least for B ≤ 5. In chapter 5, we use a generalisation of the rational map ansatz, introduced by loannidou, Piette and Zakrzewski, to construct analytically some topologically non-trivial solutions of the extended model in SU(3). These solutions are spherically symmetric and some of them can be interpreted as bound states of skyrmions. Finally, we use the same ansatz to construct low energy configurations of the SU(N) sixth order Skyrme model.

The purpose of the publication is to describe the Solutions Journalism model: its features, characteristics and features of functioning, to find out the difference in the understanding of the concept of «solutions journalism» and «constructive journalism» in general. The task of the publication was to conceptualize the main trends in the development of solutions journalism in the Western and Ukrainian information space; show the main characteristics, formats of functioning and analyze the features of the concepts of «solutions journalism» and «constructive journalism». Applied research methods: at the stage of research of the history of formation of the concept of Solutions Journalism the historical method is used. The hermeneutic method of research helped in the interpretation of basic concepts, the phenomenological approach was applied in the context of considering the essence of the phenomenon of solutions journalism. At the stage of generalization of the features of the concepts of Solutions Journalism and «constructive journalism» a comparative method was used, which gave an understanding of the common components in their essence. The method of analysis allowed to expand the understanding of the purpose of Solutions Journalism as a type of social journalism and its main tasks. With the help of synthesis it was possible to comprehensively understand the concept of Solutions Journalism and understand its features. In Ukraine, this type of journalism is just emerging, but its introduction into the editorial policy of the media may have a national importance. These are regional and local media that can inform their communities about the positive solution of certain problems in other communities, and thus thanks to this model can save local journalism. In the scientific context, there is a need to outline the main differences in the understanding of the concepts of decision journalism and constructive journalism, to understand the socio-psychological need to create good news.

Abstract (sommario):
The project “Global dissemination of the Nordic model for biogas solutions”, referred to as IP4, aimed to create a decision-making guide for companies, municipalities, and researchers interested in internationalization of biogas solutions and create a platform for dialogue and sharing experiences. The project was operationalized through workshops, presentations by companies and researchers, focusing on the adaptability and sustainability of the Nordic Biogas Model (NBM) in international contexts. Three themes have been in focus and learning outcomes are summarized under each theme.Theme1: Conditions for successful adaptation of NBM Successful adaptation of the NBM internationally depends on context-specific factors, shaped by the local needs and socioeconomic conditions of the target country. The adaptation process is typically stepwise and gradual, with progress occurring incrementally in areas like policy, regulation, and technological advancement. It is also a reciprocal process, where mutual learning between providers and adopters is critical, supported by early-stage assessments to determine adopter readiness and key preconditions.Theme2: Sustainability implications of adapting NBM The NBM presents significant sustainability benefits through multi-valorisation, enabling value creation from biogas production, nutrient recycling, and system synergies such as industrial and urban symbiosis. However, the realization of these benefits depends on the local context, including effective policies and regulatory incentives (e.g., policies that discourage landfilling, or promote waste valorisation).Theme3: Lessons from international adaptation of NBM International experiences on adaptation of biogas solutions highlight that systems that fit and confirm to existing practices (e.g., landfilling organic waste with gas capture), offer some benefits with minimal changes in the sociotechnical system. In contrast, more systemic adaptations that are closer to NBM, provide broader and more lasting benefits that take time and requires structural adjustments. In summary, considering Themes 1–3, the successful adoption of the NBM in international markets requires a strategic and context-specific approach. It is crucial to clearly communicate the diverse sustainability benefits of the NBM early in the process, preventing a narrow focus on short-term gains. Also, technology providers need to adopt a systematic approach for assessing risks and opportunities at the early stages, considering the context-specific and diverse nature of international markets. Both adopters and providers should recognize that adapting the NBM involves navigating a complex landscape with coordination among stakeholders across sectors, each with its own regulations and market conditions. Thus, it is a gradual and time-consuming process.

Abstract (sommario):
The risk of pluvial flooding is going to increase as climate change causes an increase in intense precipitation along with urbanisation leading to an increase in impermeable surfaces. In the last decade, cities such as Malmö and Copenhagen have already experienced severe pluvial flooding that has caused extensive damage. Adapting to climate change by creating flood resilient urban areas is therefore important and blue-green infrastructure (BGI) may be one measure to accomplish this. A hydrological model called TFM-DYN has been used to investigate whether BGI can aid the mitigation of pluvial flooding. TFM-DYN can also assist in selecting the best locations of BGIs. The problem of modeling urban floods using distributed high resolution hydrological models while considering the hydrological process in the upstream area is difficult due to the limited current computation capacity. However, coupling a distributed hydrological model (TFM-DYN) with an other semi distributed models (HYPE) is crucial to enable simulate, predict and map floods with high-resolution for an urban area while considering its catchment area. With the using of the new suggested coupled hydrological model, it is possible to connect and use the output results from HYPE model as an input to a distributed model (TFM-DYN). The interaction between HYPE and TFM-DYN will consider the hydrologic process occurred outside the model boundary of the interested urban area. The coupling of the two models will help initiating the model with real water depth data that may lead to more realistic simulation. The procedure of input data manipulation using the two model interactions is explained in details. The model is tested on a selected urban area to dynamically simulate the changes in the water depth with time using high resolution gridded data. The new coupled model can be of a great tool for wide range of user and stakeholders as an example to municipalities, water experts, insurance companies and to all other interested water organizations who have access to regional catchment models and in need for a high-resolution, flood simulation and mapping model.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper examines the factors that supported sustainability under Inclusive Innovation, an R&D model where students, families, communities, and teachers engage with school and district leaders, researchers, and solution providers to co-research an educational challenge in context and to co-develop solutions to the challenge, with intentional goals to benefit students from historically and systematically excluded communities. Key sustainability factors include garnering buy-in at all levels of the system, iterating to improve implementation, embedding changes in existing structures, and concretely demonstrating the benefits of the solution. In addition, the paper describes the mindsets participants developed and incorporated into their practices as a result of engaging in Inclusive Innovation. These mindsets reflect the Inclusive Innovation Core Tenets of valuing student voice and leadership, context expertise, and pursuing continuity of equity.
