Abstract (sommario):
Forestmodellers have long faced the problem of selecting an appropriate mathematical model to describe tree ontogenetic or size-shape empirical relationships for tree species. A common practice is to develop many models (or a model pool) that include different functional forms, and then to select the most appropriate one for a given data set. However, this process may impose subjective restrictions on the functional form. In this process, little attention is paid to the features (e.g. asymptote and inflection point rather than asymptote and nonasymptote) of different functional forms, and to the intrinsic curve of a given data set. In order to find a better way of comparing and selecting the growth models, this paper describes and analyses the characteristics of the Schnute model. This model has both flexibility and versatility that have not been used in forestry. In this study, the Schnute model was applied to different data sets of selected forest species to determine their functional forms. The results indicate that the model shows some desirable properties for the examined data sets, and allows for discerning the different intrinsic curve shapes such as sigmoid, concave and other curve shapes. Since no suitable functional form for a given data set is usually known prior to the comparison of candidate models, it is recommended that the Schnute model be used as the first step to determine an appropriate functional form of the data set under investigation in order to avoid using a functional form a priori.

Abstract (sommario):
Bacterial survival upon sharp fluctuations of environmental parameters and exposure to lethal doses of stressors (antibiotics, disinfectants, heat shock, and others) is ensured by the use of different strategies of resistance, an important place among which is occupied by the forms with reduced or stopped metabolism, antibiotic tolerant (AT) persister (P) cells, anabiotic dormant forms (DFs), and viable but non-culturable (VBNC) cells. Elucidating the role of these forms of bacterial resistance to an impact of chemical and biological toxicants and physical stressors is of great fundamental and practical interest. The aim of this research was to study the dynamics of the resistance forms in bacteria developing in biofilms and, for comparison in liquid media, upon exposure to lethal doses of antibiotics and heat shock (80 °C, 15 min). In the trials, the experimental model of the development of monospecies and binary forms of bacterial biofilms including contaminants of meat products (eight strains of genera Pseudomonas, Escherichia, Salmonella, Staphylococcus, and Kocuria) on the fiberglass filters was used. It was established that survival of populations in the presence of lethal doses of antibiotics and upon heating was ensured by persister cells forming in bacterial populations and, at the late stages of the development of biofilm or planktonic cultures (28 days of incubation), by anabiotic DFs. With that, the number of thermoresistant (TR) DFs (103–104 CFU/mL) in dying biofilms (28 days) developing in the standard conditions (composition and volume of a medium, pH, growth temperature) weakly depended on the bacterial taxonomic status. This study demonstrates the heterogeneity of DF populations of biofilm bacterial cultures in terms of the depth of dormancy, as a result of which the number of thermoresistant DFs after heating can exceed their total number before heating (due to the effect of DF revival, resuscitation). When studying the dynamics of TR cells and P cells in bacterial biofilm and planktonic cultures, it was found that their number (CFU/mL) in populations decreased up to the absence of TR cells and P cells on the 21st day of growth and was restored on the 28th day of growth. The revealed phenomenon can be explained only by cardinal changes in the ultrastructural organization of cells, namely, cytoplasm vitrification due to a sharp decrease in an amount of free water in a cell, which, according to the results obtained, occurs in the period between the 21st and 28th days of incubation. A high degree of correlation between the number of AT cells and TR cells (0.5–0.92) confirms the hypothesis that regards P cells as precursors of DFs.

Abstract (sommario):
This study aims at developing and empirically testing an integrated model incorporating the factors that form university image in Syria. The study used a quantitative survey of students at Syrian universities. A pre-test of the questionnaire was undertaken using a convenient sample of 40 students. Thereafter, a sample of 259 students was used to test the model using structural equation modeling. The findings suggest word of mouth and faculty-individualized attention, one of service quality dimensions, as the antecedents of university image. Moreover, the findings reveal a positive effect of faculty-individualized attention and support staff helpfulness, as service quality dimensions, on student satisfaction. It is also found that student satisfaction positively affect word of mouth. This study is expected to help Syrian universities understand the key factors contributing to university image formation, and, therefore, strengthen their positions in the market. This study comes to be one of the first studies that attempt to understand how university image is formed.

Abstract (sommario):
Check forms are used by many people in daily life for money remittances. Surprisingly, the processing of these forms at banks and post offices is only partly automated. In this paper, we consider a particular kind of form, viz., the GIRO check forms used in Switzerland. We will describe a fully automatic system which is able to recognise the financial institution, the name and address of the receiver, and the account number on a GIRO check. The system comprises procedures for binarization, segmentation, model matching, and optical character recognition (OCR). Experiments on a sample set of 48 checks have shown promising results in terms of both computation time and recognition accuracy.

Abstract (sommario):
Nondeclarative memory and novelty processing in the brain is an actively studied field of neuroscience, and reducing neural activity with repetition of a stimulus (repetition suppression) is a commonly observed phenomenon. Recent findings of an opposite trend—specifically, rising activity for unfamiliar stimuli—question the generality of repetition suppression and stir debate over the underlying neural mechanisms. This letter introduces a theory and computational model that extend existing theories and suggests that both trends are, in principle, the rising and falling parts of an inverted U-shaped dependence of activity with respect to stimulus novelty that may naturally emerge in a neural network with Hebbian learning and lateral inhibition. We further demonstrate that the proposed model is sufficient for the simulation of dissociable forms of repetition priming using real-world stimuli. The results of our simulation also suggest that the novelty of stimuli used in neuroscientific research must be assessed in a particularly cautious way. The potential importance of the inverted-U in stimulus processing and its relationship to the acquisition of knowledge and competencies in humans is also discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractA powerful tool to investigate the stability of the orbits of natural and artificial bodies is represented by perturbation theory, which allows one to provide normal form estimates for nearly-integrable problems in Celestial Mechanics. In particular, we consider the orbital stability of point-mass satellites moving around the Earth. On the basis of the J2 model, we investigate the stability of the semimajor axis. Using a secular Hamiltonian model including also lunisolar perturbations, the so-called geolunisolar model, we study the stability of the other orbital elements, namely the eccentricity and the inclination. We finally discuss the applicability of Nekhoroshev’s theorem on the exponential stability of the action variables. To this end, we investigate the non-degeneracy properties of the J2 and geolunisolar models. We obtain that the J2 model satisfies a “three-jet” non-degeneracy condition, while the geolunisolar model is quasi-convex non-degenerate.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractFields of characteristic zero with several commuting derivations can be treated as fields equipped with a space of derivations that is closed under the Lie bracket. The existentially closed instances of such structures can then be given a coordinate-free characterization in terms of differential forms. The main tool for doing this is a generalization of the Frobenius Theorem of differential geometry.

Abstract (sommario):
We have presented the tilted cosmological model consisting of two forms of dark energy. The behavior of different stages of the Universe in tilted models is studied with the help of dark energy contained in our Universe to be part of quintessence which is a homogeneous minimally coupled scalar. To get the deterministic model, we have assumed a power law of gravitational constant G. We also investigated the behavior of some physical and geometrical parameters.

Abstract (sommario):
The study is focused on the analysis of the open question of the European Social Model in the light of new forms of employment. The role of the social policy in the Member States of the European Union (EU) has been modified far from the concept of social justice and social security. Therefore, the welfare state has disappeared in the EU. Prevalent ideas of the humane economy have been neglected in the contemporary momentum of the EU. When it was celebrated only economic criteria, the current development of society could be very fast, but at the same time extremely destructive, manifested in the inappropriate expansion of large-scale social problems, especially in long-term unemployment. In this context, it is important to consider non-standard forms of employment. This is even more essential, bearing in mind the huge existing problem of youth unemployment, especially highly educated.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper is part II of “Towards A Model of Urban Evolution.” It defines a formal model of the Signature of an urban space, comprised of the information encoded in that space. This information consists of: an urban genome, which captures ideas regarding the groups (i.e., users) and activities (i.e., uses) to which a space’s physical forms are oriented; ideas among human actors regarding who (users) and how (uses) to utilize the space and its forms; and the signals that are communicated within and among urban spaces. Central to the model is the notion of the formeme, which provides the building blocks for a Signature. Formemes are units of urban information regarding physical forms, groups, and activities, which may be encoded in physical artifacts, signals, or human actors, and circulate among them. We then show how various metrics can define an urban area based on its Signature, and that these metrics can be used to measure similarity of urban spaces. The Signature, and its underlying formemes capture the sources of variations in urban evolution.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between abusive supervision and employee health and safety outcomes in Study 1 and to examine the effect of inconsistent leadership, operationalized as the interaction between transformational leadership and supervisor incivility, on employee safety participation in Study 2. Design/methodology/approach In Study 1, survey data were gathered from n=145 healthcare workers. In Study 2, survey data were gathered from n=177 nurses. Findings A partially mediated structural model was estimated in Study 1 and the results show that the model provided a good fit to the data χ2 (1)=1.27, p=0.23. Abusive supervision predicted safety climate (β=−0.41, p<0.01) and psychological health (β=−0.27, p<0.01). Safety climate, in turn, predicted psychological health (β= 0.40, p<0.01) and safety participation (β= 0.37, p<0.01). Study 2: moderated regression analysis showed that inconsistent leadership significantly predicted employee safety participation, F(5,144)=4.46, p<0.01. Originality/value Theoretical and practical implications for creating psychologically healthy workplaces through interventions aimed at improving leader effectiveness are discussed.

The thermodynamic behavior of the two-flavor (Nf = 2) three-color (Nc = 3) Polyakov-loop-extended Nambu–Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model at the finite chemical potential is investigated. New lattice gluon data for gluon thermodynamics are used defining the effective potential within polynomial and logarithmic forms of its approximation. We study the effects of using different sets of data and different forms of the potential on thermodynamic properties of hot and dense matter. It is found that the PNJL thermodynamics depends stronger on the form of the effective potential than on the used lattice data set. Particular attention is paid to the phase diagram in the (T, μ) plane.

AbstractModels of normal open induction (NOI) are those discretely ordered rings, integrally closed in their fraction field whose nonnegative part satisfy Peano's induction axioms for open formulas in the language of ordered semirings. Here we study the problem of representability of an element a of a model M of NOI (in some extension of M) by a quadratic form of the type X2 + b Y2 where b is a nonzero integer. Using either a trigonometric or a hyperbolic parametrization we prove that except in some trivial cases, M[x, y] with x2 + by2 = a can be embedded in a model of NOI.We also study quadratic extensions of a model M of NOI; we first prove some properties of the ring of Gaussian integers of M. Then we study the group of solutions of a Pell equation in NOI; we construct a model in which the quotient group by the squares has size continuum.

Difficulties associated with the EMA and OMA have contributed to the increase of OMAX model applications, especially in case of energetic machines. Theoretical assumptions related with modal analysis are very strong. In reality when big and heavy structures are considered often those assumptions are not fulfilled. In the paper such situations are considered and practical solutions are showed.

Abstract (sommario):
The extended model of different forms of work satisfaction ( Büssing, 1991 ), originally proposed by Bruggemann (1974) , is suggested as a distinctive qualitative approach to work satisfaction. Six forms of work satisfaction—progressive, stabilized, resigned satisfaction, constructive, fixated, resigned dissatisfaction—are derived from the constellation of four constituent variables: comparison of the actual work situation and personal aspirations, global satisfaction, changes in level of aspiration, controllability at work. Preliminary evidence from semi-structured interviews with 46 nurses shows that the dynamic model is headed in the right direction (qualitative differentiation of consistently high propertions of satisfied employees, uncovering processes of person-work situation interaction). Qualitative methods demonstrated their usefulness in accessing underlying cognitive and evaluative processes of the forms, which are often neglected by traditional attitude-based satisfaction research.

Abstract (sommario):
Clahsen proposes two distinct processing routes, for regularly and irregularly inflected forms, respectively, and thus is apparently making a psychological claim. We argue that his position, which embodies a strictly linguistic perspective, does not constitute a psychological processing model.

Abstract (sommario):
A connectionist back-propagation net is trained to learn a mapping between verb forms (infinitive, imperative, present tense) and past tense forms. A back-propagation network requires that a one-to-one mapping exists between input and output. Since Swedish past tense is characterized by choice between weak and strong forms this proves a hard task for the net. Examples are:nypte/nöp ‘pinched’,tvang/tvingade‘forced’, where there is no obvious reason for preferring one form over the other. The task is still worth doing since regularities emerge in the net over time. The performance of the connectionist model is analysed and compared to previous results.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT The On-Scene Command and Control (OSC2) system has been developed for the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) under the direction of Headquarters (HQ), Research & Development (R&D) Center, and National Strike Force. The prototype system is now being used by the Atlantic Strike Team (AST) for PREP government-led area exercise use in an evaluation program. The OSC2 system manages the Incident Command System (ICS) forms, an underlying data base of spill response resources, and an oil spill model system, complete with a GIS user interface. An underlying geographic database contains vector maps of the land and water masses and raster marine charts. ICS Divisions/Groups and their Locations are mapped onto this geographic view. Resource allocations can be viewed and changes made both through the map view and the ICS forms view. The system keeps a history of all status changes. The strengths of the system are its adherence to ICS methodology, its complete underlying database structure, and its versatility in combining the map view and the data base view of the response situation and management. The system enables a complete and consistent review of all planned resource allocation for a spill or exercise.
