Abstract (sommario):
We analyze the degenerate transient multi-dimensional quasi-hydrodynamic model for semiconductors with general recombination rate. We present existence results for general nonlinear diffusivities for the nondegenerate and the degenerate Dirichlet-Neumann mixed boundary value problem. Uniqueness of solutions of the nondegenerate system can be proved in the Dirichlet boundary case. Concerning the degenerate problem uniqueness can only be shown under some conditions on the initial and boundary data or on the electric field.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract We verify the maximum conjecture on the rigidity of totally nondegenerate model CR manifolds in the following two cases: (i) for all models of CR dimension one, (ii) for the so-called full-models, namely those in which their associated symbol algebras are free CR. In particular, we discover that in each arbitrary CR dimension and length {\geq 3} , there exists at least one totally nondegenerate model, enjoying this conjecture. Our proofs rely upon some recent results in the Tanaka theory of transitive prolongation of fundamental algebras.

Abstract (sommario):
Scalar fields are favorite among the possible candidates for the dark energy. Most frequently discussed are those with degenerate minima at [Formula: see text]. In this paper, a slightly modified two-Higgs doublet model is taken to contain the Higgs field(s) as the dark energy candidate(s). The model considered has two nondegenerate minima at [Formula: see text], instead of one degenerate minimum at [Formula: see text]. The component fields of one SU(2) doublet ([Formula: see text]) act as the standard model (SM) Higgs, while the component fields of the second doublet ([Formula: see text]) are taken to be the dark energy candidates (lying in the true vacuum). It is found that one can arrange for late time acceleration (dark energy) by using an SU(2) Higgs doublet, whose vacuum expectation value is zero, in the quintessential regime.

Abstract (sommario):
Sources of significant acoustic, mechanical and thermal effects, gas microbubbles are widely used for industrial and medical purposes. Among others, the acoustic oscillation of microbubbles make it possible to internalize products in living cells, which opens the way to numerous therapeutic applications. Large amplitude oscillatory regimes necessary for there to be a significant interaction with cells can be synonymous with the appearance of instability of the bubble interface and of the so-called nonspherical modes of bubble oscillation, but also to bubble collapse and cell destruction. It seems therefore necessary to control their dynamics in order to minimize the harmful effects and maximize the therapeutic action. With the view to study the action of the oscillating bubble at the cellular level, this thesis manuscript presents an experimental work in three stages. First, the oscillatory dynamics of a single bubble attached to a wall is studied, in particular through the conditions for the appearance of its nonspherical modes. Second, the appearance of fluid flows, also called microstreaming, induced by such a nonspherical bubble is analyzed on the basis of a quantitative description of its interface. Lastly, this knowledge acquired on an oscillating bubble is transposed to the configuration of a bubble-cell pair. The bubble-induced mechanical effects that apply on the cell are assessed at both the acoustic and the fluidic time scales

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract A fundamental theoretical model that can deal with the Kondo effect is called the Anderson model [1]. In the simplest version of the model, one considers an impurity with a nondegenerate localized orbital in a metallic environment which has a single conduction band with the spectrum ϵ k The localized orbital has the on-site Coulomb repulsion U, and the electron with spin a is annihilated by the operator f σ.

Abstract (sommario):
We recently1 calculated the amount of squeezing predicted by our quantum theory of multiwave mixing for a one-photon two-level model. Here we use the corresponding theory for the two-photon two-level model,2 which allows for nonsaturating nondegenerate pump and probe waves and includes dynamic Stark shifts. We simplify the more complicated general model using a fourthorder perturbation limit and find very simple expressions that show even for very weak pumps with no Stark shifts or atomic detuning significant squeezing can be achieved. Much of this squeezing is due to scattering of the conjugate field off the pump-induced two-photon coherence, which does not arise in the one-photon case. In general, Stark shifts induce large regions of significant gain, resulting in instabilities. We also show results for high intensity pumps that require larger atomic detunings to obtain a large amount of squeezing. The low intensities required in the two-photon case should make squeezing easier to observe than in the one-photon case.

Abstract (sommario):
The intervertebral disc is comprised of complex components that provide the disc with nonlinear, viscoelastic and anisotropic mechanical properties. The annulus fibrosus (AF) is a highly organized structure composed of concentric layers of collagen fibers embedded in a proteoglycan matrix. The AF has a high tensile stiffness and supports the large loads encountered by the disc. Mathematical models are needed to interpret and elucidate the meaning of experimental measurements made in mechanical tests. Based upon the classic work of Spencer [1], the AF has been modeled as a fiber-induced anisotropic hyperelastic material [e.g.,2–6], using the principle invariants of the Green deformation tensor and structural tensors representing the collagen fiber populations. Contributions of other AF components to mechanical behaviors are less understood than the fibers or matrix and may include connections between collagens and proteoglycans that can be incorporated into models through fiber-matrix interactions [2–4]. The previous models, however, have not been applied to experimental data from both nondegenerate and degenerate tissue. Constitutive modeling applied to nondegenerate and degenerate AF may elucidate microstructural changes with degeneration, will be useful for finite element models [5], and provide targets for disc treatments, such as tissue engineered constructs [7].

Abstract (sommario):
Nondegenerate parametric oscillation and four-wave mixing generate correlated twin-beams that exhibit squeezing in the intensity difference fluctuations. Using a simple theoretical model for parametric amplification we predict that the twin-beam devices generate macroscopic states that violate Bell’s inequality. In four-wave mixing, or parametric oscillation with an amplitude-squeezed pump, the twin-beams may also exhibit squeezing in the intensity of each beam. We predict that the use of these intensity-squeezed devices is advantageous in the preparation of the macroscopic quantum states. It is also possible to use nondegenerate systems to generate macroscopic superposition (Schrodinger cat) states.

Abstract (sommario):
We show that the simple Z-scan technique1 can be extended to study the dynamics of optical nonlinearities by using a nondegenerate time-delay excite-probe geometry. In this scheme, we obtain information regarding the signs, magnitudes, lifetimes, and dispersions of both absorptive and refractive components of optical nonlinearities. Nondegenerate two-photon absorption in ZnSe and cross-phase modulation in ZnS and ZnSe are measured, and the results are shown to be in good agreement with those of the recent two-band model, which utilizes the nonlinear Kramers-Krönig transformation to relate nonlinear absorption to nonlinear refraction.2 The results for ZnSe, for example, show the dominance of the ultrafast bound electronic Kerr effect at small delays, while the long-lived and cumulative free carrier refraction dominates at longer delays. Using exact nonlinear wave propagation analysis, we can identify and measure degenerate and nondegenerate coefficients of two-photon absorption and n2. In addition, the picosecond dynamics of the free-carrier nonlinearities (absorption, band filling) can also be investigated.

Abstract (sommario):
We present a novel approach to the numerical modelling of pulsed nanosecond optical parametric oscillators (OPO’s). Our model expands upon a recent procedure [1] to consider the case of a nondegenerate, singly resonant OPO. A single partial differential equation describes the temporal and transverse variations of the resonated signal field and also accounts for diffraction, phase mis-matching and idler absorption. The pump and idler fields are reconstructed from the signal dynamics. The numerical integration of our single equation model is considerably faster than that of the corresponding three coupled equations.
