Abstract (sommario):
Mobility support in education is one of key, longtime targets of the EU. Apart from significant financial resources that are put into this target through various EU programmes, mobility is also supported by other means. This master's thesis focuses on describing and analyzing mobility support in terciary education in the EU in view of the newest trends in this field -- the use of ICT. The aim is to introduce and critically evaluate the current problematics of academic mobility in the EU, describe the relation and importance of physical and virtual mobility and outline possible future developments. Furthermore, the paper attempts to justify this mobility support by putting academic mobility in the context of individual and economic competitiveness, and thus find out whether virtual mobility itself can be a catalyst for competitiveness.

Abstract (sommario):
Economic mobility constitutes a social aspiration in many modern societies however do we really know the actual evolution of social mobility? In other words: 1) how can we measure economic mobility with the data available or with the technology at hand? 2) What are the trends of economic mobility experienced by the current generation? Moreover 3) how mobile is a society relative to previous generations? These questions motivate this dissertation. The complexity of these issues may derive in some sort of paralysis but it is claimed here that it may be possible to learn something about its evolution by restricting analysis to a couple of key dimensions within the economic discipline: income and education. This is the scope followed by this research. The first paper in this dissertation is devoted to deal with the lack of the required data to examine the income dynamics within one generation. It is well known that longitudinal data is often scarce and is seldom available in many countries. This is the case even in well-developed countries! This conundrum has been partially addressed through recent methodological approaches by the so-called synthetic panels. The second part of this dissertation is entirely devoted to applied research. More specifically, the second and third papers describe long run trends of economic mobility in income and education respectively. The former is devoted to intra-generational mobility while the later is devoted to inter-generational mobility. Each of them address the second and third interrogations referred above. In a way this dissertation attempts to improve the addition of the time dimension in the analysis of economic wellbeing. It attempts to produce the effect of a motion picture by the use multiple snapshots. The trends contained herein are far from being perfect and complete but they are based on the use of extensive data and multiple methods covering three decades and the same number of generations in each case. This research expects to expand our knowledge on the empirics of economic mobility as most of the studies refer to few years of intra-generational mobility or to a couple of generations only. Furthermore, most of the empirical evidence available refers to Nordic and highly industrialized countries. Mexico is the canvas of this work but the approaches and principles followed here could be easily mimicked elsewhere. The roads of our lives are constantly moving: rising and falling. In a democratic context, it is useful to know, whether our society provides the chance to get ahead regardless of our origins, or whether this chance is ruled or doomed by them. Empirical evidence is needed to foster these deliberations. This dissertation may well be an invitation to sustain this kind conversation

Poirel, Maylis. Thesis, Paris Est, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PESC1046/document.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
It is now essential for professionals in charge of the mobility services production to take into account their users. However, most of the time they work in the absence of users : in the case of classic services, the users are inaccessible, and in the case of emerging collaborative services such as carpooling, they don't exist yet. Professionals then use various devices, such as surveys, consultation, claims processing, communication, or information system, in order to represent the users in the different dimensions of the mobility services production. This thesis research relies on interactionist, sociotechnical and commmunication approaches in order to give a global understanding of the production of these various devices generally taken separately. The main argument is that the professionals build a fiction in which the users become characters: they go back and forth between staging interactions with the users and reflecting on them through storytelling. This research relies on a qualitative study with two mobility services producers in the Parisian region based on participant observation of work situations and semi-structured interviews with professionals. The first one is the regional Public Transport Authority in charge of the design and the operation of the regional public transport services. The second one is a short distance carpooling start-up launching an experiment in partnership with local authorities in the outer suburbs of the metropolitan area

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation is a response to the negative trends in urban mobility, which led many authors to conclude on the need for a new approach to personal transport in the cities. The work has creative character, but in the conceptual level, it is taking into account the specific needs of sustainable urban mobility and build on the existing innovative transport solutions. The result of dissertation is a vehicle vision, understood as an element of urban mobility that respects the character of the zones of free movement of persons, but it is also suitable for transport over longer distances.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis consists of an introductory part and the following four self-contained papers: In Paper [I] we analyze the implications of social identity and self-categorization for optimal redistributive income taxation. A two-type model is supplemented by an assumption that individuals select themselves into social categories, in which norms are formed and education effort choices partly depend on these norms. The results show, among other things, that externality correction by a welfarist government leads to an element of tax progression that serves to reduce the discrepancy between the effort norm and the actual effort chosen by low-productivity individuals in the high-effort group. Furthermore, if the preference for social identity is sufficiently strong, increased wage-inequality leads to higher social welfare through a relaxation of the selection constraint. It may thus be desirable to use publicly provided education to induce more wage-inequality, even if higher wage-inequality increases the intrinsic utility of a potential mimicker. In Paper [II] I employ high quality register data to present new facts about income mobility in Sweden. The focus of the paper is regional differences in mobility, using a novel approach based on a multilevel model. This method is well-suited when regions differ greatly in population size as is the case in Sweden. The maximum likelihood estimates are substantially more precise than those obtained by running separate OLS regressions. I find small regional differences in income mobility when measured in relative terms. Regional differences are large when adopting an absolute measure and focusing on children with below-median parent income. On the national level I find that the association between parent and child income ranks has decreased over time, implying increased mobility. In Paper [III] I study the long term effects of inter-municipal moving during childhood on income using Swedish register data. Due to the richness of the data I am able to control for important sources of selection into moving, such as parent separation, parents' unemployment, education, long run income, and immigration background. I find that children's long run incomes are significantly negatively affected by moving during childhood, and the effect is larger for those who move more often. For children who move once, I also estimate the effect of the timing and the quality of the move. I measure the quality of each neighborhood based on the adult outcomes for individuals who never move. The quality of a move is defined as the difference in quality between the origin and the destination. Given that a family moves, I find that the negative effect of childhood moving on adult income is increasing in age at move. Children benefit economically from the quality of the region they move to only if they move before age 12 (sons) and age 16 (daughters). In Paper [IV] I study the bias of IGE estimates for different missing-data scenarios based on simulated income processes. Using an income process from the income dynamics and risks literature to generate two linked generations’ complete income histories, I use Monte Carlo methods to study the relationship between available data patterns and the bias of the IGE. I find that the traditional approach using the average of the typically available log income observations leads to IGE estimates that are around 40 percent too small. Moreover, I show that the attenuation bias is not reduced by averaging over many father income observations. Using just one income observation for each generation at the optimal age (as discussed in the paper) or using weighted instead of unweighted averages can reduce the bias. In addition, the rank-rank slope is found to be clearly less sensitive to missing data.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The use of mobile devices and mobile applications has soared in recent years. People are using mobile devices and applications for everyday tasks. Compared with desktop computers, smart phones have some limitations such as screen size, limited bandwidth and storage capacity that can be a big challenge. Another challenge is to ensure consistency across platforms and devices. In addition to this, a mobile application is short-lived if it is too advanced to be used. In this paper we present the user interface that is adopted in the Smart Media news recommendation project. We are building a mobile news application that retrieves news from all major Norwegian newspapers. The result of this study will be a news system where the main focus will be on the user interface part of the system and how this part can be created. The application can be either downloaded as an app or run on a browser on any mobile devices. It differs from other applications by offering users the ability to change the way news stories are presented. It also offers functionalities such as offline reading/browsing and sharing of news stories through social media. The application has been evaluated both empirically and heuristically during the development process.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis analyses interconnections between educational policies and different aspects of mobility. In the first chapter I use the dismissal of scientists in Nazi Germany to analyse peer effects among university scientists. The usual problems related to estimating peer effects are addressed by using the dismissal of researchers by the Nazi government as a source of exogenous variation in the scientists' peer group. Using a dataset of all physicists, chemists, and mathematicians at all German universities from 1925 until 1938 I investigate spillovers at different levels of peer interactions. There is no evidence for peer effects at the department level or the specialization level. I find, however, that peer quality matters for coauthors. Losing a coauthor of average quality reduces the productivity of a scientist by about 12.5 percent in physics and 16.5 percent in chemistry. The second chapter analyses the effect of studying abroad on international labour market mobility later in life. I have collaborated with Matthias Parey for this research project. We exploit the introduction of the ERASMUS student exchange programme as a source of exogenous variation in student mobility. Our results indicate that student exchange mobility is an important determinant of international labour market mobility: Studying abroad increases an individual's probability of working in a foreign country by about 15 to 20 percentage points. We investigate heterogeneity in returns and find that studying abroad has a stronger effect for credit constrained students. The last chapter of the thesis investigates the effect of school tracking on social mobility of students. In particular I investigate whether ability tracking exacerbates the role of parental background for students' educational achievement. Using microdata from different educational studies I exploit cross-country variation in tracking policies to identify the effect of tracking. Controlling for unobserved country level variables using difference-in-differences, I find no increase in the importance of a student's family background after tracking has taken place. This result runs contrary to the findings of the current literature. I show that the results of the existing literature are not robust to slight changes in specification.

Abstract (sommario):
The topic of the project has been about how the time spent during transport could take on a more engaging and active form; physically as well as mentally.  The initial inspiration for this is the changing landscape of mobility, where technologies such as autonomous and shared systems, could allow for purpose specific vehicles rather then personally owned ones. The project investigates how a subscription based business model could help a global mass-market brand, like Volkswagen to stay true to its brand essence. The project is set in 2039’s megacities and is describing a scenario, where Volkswagen sets out to emphasise the ‘Volk’ in its name, by offering a whole new range of purpose specific vehicles, which the user then can pick and book at any given time. During the creative process both analogue and digital tools were used to explore form, function and the overall experience. Full-scale physical mocks-ups and 3D software models where additionally used to validate proportions, scale and concept principles. Working from the Volkswagen design studio gave valuable insights into the brand heritage and design inputs from the design team. The result is an active mobility vehicle concept called, (((O))), which allows its users to spent their transport time in an more engaging way. Through two modes the user can decide to exercise body or mind while being transported. This is done by the usage of mixed realities which connects and relates with the passing surrounds. The project hereby links the digital world with the real one, in order to create new notions of what a travel experience could be in the future.

Abstract (sommario):
In urban and peri-urban environments, transport and mobility are strongly linked to socio-economic activities. They are influenced by individual's personal psychology, social norms, resistance to change, personal attitude, habits, fears and beliefs. Beirut is a mono-centric city with transport supply poverty. Vehicle ownership has increased rapidly in response to the shortage of public transportation. Currently, there is an opportunity to develop mobility management services and establish sustainable mobility and accessibility in Beirut. This requires that transport modes be affordable, efficient and environmentally friendly, as well as technologies that minimize the energy consumption by focusing on three main points: reducing travel needs, adopting more environmentally friendly modes of transportation, and improving the efficiency of vehicle technology. This thesis focuses on the modeling of displacement behavior, based on agent-oriented modeling. We analyzed the data obtained from a survey we conducted for Beirut. We established a relation between employment, social status and mode of transportation selection. The subject of the thesis is an agent-oriented simulation model of road traffic using an institutional economic approach. We propose an architecture, algorithms and methods to implement the agents model in order to model and reproduce their modes of transport behavior. Associated scientific questions are the effects of economic, social, career and household factors on choosing a mode of transport. This work is part of a project of the company S&A (Belgium and Lebanon) to provide tools to enable the transition of means of transport to a more respectful practice

Abstract (sommario):
The need to recompose an approach to sustainable mobility appears more intensely at the beginning of the 21st century in a tense economic and social context in parallel with international injunctions to reduce pollution, especially automobiles, and to cope with climate change. By questioning the foundations and perspectives of the paradigm of sustainable mobility, it is proposed to define the contours of future strategies for its implementation. As such, the peri-urban area is retained because it presents particular challenges: complex territorial structure, low public transport offerings, multi-polarized demand and monomodal and auto-solitary displacements. This space is a laboratory of paradoxical analyzes because this unfavorable situation in terms of the organization of the sustainable mobility system can be turned into an opportunity through both technical and organizational experiments and encourage other ways of moving. The implementation of this perspective induces a shift from traditional systems of travel management to cross-sectoral cooperation of actors. The recomposition of the technical approach, the reorganization of the decision-making bodies, the experimentation and the innovation thus carry the hope of a more durable mobility especially in the spaces under urban dependence as we show it with that of the area metropolitan Montpellier (Hérault-France)

Delaying the transition of the elderly to higher level of care using assistive robotic devices could have great social and economic significance. The transition, necessitated by the degradation of physical and cognitive capability of the elderly, results in drastic increase of cost and rapid decrease of quality of life. A Personal Aid for Mobility and Health Monitoring system (PAMM) has been developed at MIT Field and Space Robotics Laboratory for the elderly living independently or in senior assisted living facilities so as to delay their transition to nursing homes. This thesis research addresses the mobility design and control issues of such devices. Eldercare environments are semi-structured, usually congested, and filled with static and/or dynamic obstacles. Developing effective mobility designs to achieve good maneuverability is a great challenge. An omni-directional mobility concept using conventional wheels has been developed independently in this research. Mobility systems based on this concept are simple, lightweight, energy efficient, and capable of operating on a range of floor surfaces. Assistive mobility devices work in shared workspace and interact directly with their users with limited physical and cognitive capabilities. The users may not be well trained, nor fully understand system. The challenge is to design an ergonomic and intuitive human machine interaction and a control system that can properly allocate control authority between the human and the machine. For this purpose, the admittance-based control methodology is used for the human machine interaction control. An adaptive shared control framework allocates control based on metrics of the demonstrated human performance has been developed.
(cont.) Substantial amount of field experiments have been conducted with the actual users to validate control system design. The mobility design and control system implemented and tested on PAMM, will also be applicable to other cooperative mobile robots working in semi-structured indoor environments such as a factory or warehouse.

Abstract (sommario):
In urban and metropolitan context, Traffic Operations Centres (TOCs) use technologies as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to tackling urban mobility issue. Usually in TOCs, various isolated systems are maintained in parallel (stored in different databases), and data comes from different sources: a challenge in transport management is to transfer disparate data into a unified data management system that preserves access to legacy data, allowing multi-thematic analysis. This need of integration between systems is important for a wise policy decisions. This study aims to design a comprehensive and general spatial data model that could allow the integration and visualization of traffic components and measures. The activity is focused on the case study of 5T Agency in Turin, a TOC that manages traffic regulation, public transit fleets and information to users, in the metropolitan area of Turin and Piedmont Region. In particular, the agency has set up during years a wide system of ITS technologies that acquires continuously measures and traffic information, which are used to deploy information services to citizens and public administrations. However, the spatial nature of these data is not fully considered in the daily operational activity, with the result of difficulties in information integration. Indeed the agency lacks of a complete GIS that includes all the management information in an organized spatial and “horizontal” vision. The main research question concerns the integration of different kind of data in a unique GIS spatial data model. Spatial data interoperability is critical and particularly challenging because geographic data definition in legacy database can vary widely: different data format and standards, data inconsistencies, different spatial and temporal granularities, different methods and enforcing rules that relates measures, events and physical infrastructures. The idea is not to replace the existing implemented and efficient system, but to built-up on these systems a GIS that overpass the different software and DBMS platforms and that can demonstrate how a spatial and horizontal vision in tackling urban mobility issues may be useful for policy and strategies decisions. The modelling activity take reference from a transport standards review and results in database general schema, which can be reused by other TOCs in their activities, helping the integration and coordination between different TOCs. The final output of the research is an ArcGIS geodatabase, tailored on 5T data requirements, which enable the customised representation of private traffic elements and measures. Specific custom scripts have been developed to allow the extraction and the temporal aggregation of traffic measures and events. The solution proposed allows the reuse of data and measures for custom purposes, without the need to deeply know the entire ITS environment system. In addition, The proposed ArcGIS geodatabase solution is optimised for limited power-computing environment. A case study has been deepened in order to evaluate the suitability of the database: a confrontation between damages, detected by Emergency Mapping Services (EMS), and Traffic Message Channel traffic events, has been conducted, evaluating the utility of 5T historical information of traffic events of the Piedmont floods of November 2016 for EMS services.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Renewed mobility policies have been developed since the mid-2000s in French rural areas, which are particularly car dependent. Local authorities have chosen to offer alternatives to automotive mobility. This thesis analyzes the emergence of public electric mobility policies, while national or European incentives encourage their development (cars, bicycles, charging stations). Do rural actors seize these incentives? And how? This study questions therefore the particular ways in which the incentive mechanisms related to electromobility in small rural communities are taken advantage of and how local authorities consent to this encouragement to change. The main hypothesis of this research is that the emergence of e-mobility in rural territories is elaborated and shaped by both local stakeholders and external actors, not always in consensual ways. With a multidisciplinary approach, we study the gradual deployment of e-mobility in two French territories, the Manche department and the Aveyron department. This study is based on the monitoring of several projects, and on interviews of local stakeholders. Our results show how e-mobility is used by local stakeholders to negotiate the turn toward a more sustainable rural transportation network and to reconsider the automobility system. It is seized, discussed, tested or rejected and might be integrated into a territorial strategy, depending on the resources and on the role of local actors.E-mobility is undertaken in several ways. First, it is implanted in a diversity of local public policies (tourism, social inclusion, environment), within smaller projects such as electric bike rental or electric car sharing system. It emerges through practical initiatives which stakeholders come up with in search of new mobility systems for the territory.Secondly, we show that e-mobility is a strategic tool, in larger projects (hydrogen, charging stations) in order to promote an energy system for the territory. In two territories historically shaped by electrical production (nuclear power and hydroelectric power), we demonstrate that e-mobility represents a powerful tool in the context of an energy transition, as it enables stakeholders to secure their role within these territories. The movement toward this innovation is made in the continuity of the rural and local policies, targetting isues such as tourism or local economy, and in connection with the national energy policies of energy transition. Finally, we hypothesize that these projects can also lead to discontinuities, to a reinvention of the rural, toward a new energy network, and new mobilities

Abstract (sommario):
Increasing vehicular travel and environmental issues are trends increasing the pressure on urban transport systems. The new concept Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is one approach to tackle these challenges. The aim of MaaS is to reduce the need of the private car and increase the use of shared resources by providing one single application that integrates all transport modes, payment, and services. Several ongoing societal trends such as urbanization, technologic development, and sharing economy are examples of reasons for the emergence of MaaS. Young people are often leading the development and are early adopters of new technologies. The mobility demands of young people today and in the future will therefore play an important role in the implementations of MaaS. This qualitative study uses focus groups to explore mobility demands today and in the envisioned future of young people (aged 15-23) living in Stockholm. Our understanding of travel behaviour and mobility demands among young people is limited, and this study also aims to get deeper understanding of the underlying values and attitudes towards mobility that influence those demands and behaviours. This study aims to answer how young people’s mobility demands look like and if they correspond to the visions of MaaS as stated by developers and experts of the concept. Findings indicate that mobility demands and behaviour are strongly influenced by parents, and underlying values such as ‘Freedom’ and ‘Comfortable life’ affect mobility more than factors such as availability and travel time. There is little need for increased accessibility to transport today and in the envisioned future. Findings also indicate a relatively widespread environmental awareness, but an unwillingness to convert awareness to change of behaviour. The demands of young people correspond to some extent with the visions of MaaS, and the probability of young people to adopt MaaS and to choose environmentally friendly journey is high if demands for convenience and comfort are fulfilled.

Mahbas, Ali. "Challenges imposed by user's mobility in future HetNet : offloading and mobility management". Thesis, University of Kent, 2017. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/62522/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The users' mobility imposes challenges to mobility management and, the offloading process, which hinder the conventional heterogeneous networks (HetNets) in meeting the huge data traffic requirements of the future. In this thesis, a trio-connectivity (TC), which includes a control-plane (C-plane), a user-plane (U-plane) and an indication-plane (I-plane), is proposed to tackle these challenges. Especially, the I-plane is created as an indicator to help the user equipment (UE) identify and discover the small cells in the system prior to offloading her from the overloaded cells e.g. macro cells, to the cells with abundant resources e.g. small cells. In order to show the advantages of the proposed TC structure, a comparison between the TC and the dual-connectivity (DC) is presented in this thesis, in terms of uplink energy efficiency (ULEE) and energy consumption. Furthermore, the complexity of mobility management is addressed in this thesis as the HetNets will have to handle a large number of UEs and their frequent handoffs due to very dense small-footprint small cells. Considering an accurate mobility framework is essential not only to find the potential offloading to the small cells but also to show the mobility impact on the quality of service (QoS). This thesis presents a framework to model and derive the coverage of small cells, the cell sojourn time and the handoff rate in a multi-tier HetNet by taking into account the overlap coverage among the small cells. The results show the effects of a number of parameters, including the density and the transmit power of the small cells and the power control factor, on the system performance. They also show that the TC can outperform the DC in dense HetNets in terms of energy efficiency and energy consumption.

Abstract (sommario):
Few studies have examined how mobile work processes can be integrated into organizations from a business-oriented perspective, and among organizations there’s a lack of long-term strategies, and understanding, for internal business mobility. This study examines how an organization can prepare itself for change towards a mobile work life. In order to do this a literature review and case study involving document studies and interviews at an organization with specifically developed methodologies were conducted. The results showed that the state of maturity is still relatively low, and there is a need to focus on developing a more thorough understanding of mobility, where challenges involve handling attitudes, organizational culture and leadership. Mobility-related needs involve task-oriented and social aspects, where different technological solutions were suggested to maintain the connections between individuals and the organization. There is also a need for more longitudinal studies due to the results showing how the significant changes occur over a longer period of time. An important part of the development of knowledge concerning mobility also involves learning from others’ examples, where this study is a contribution.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This doctoral thesis studies how labor market institutions, social contacts, and firm-ownership schemes determine workers and firms job mobility decisions. The first chapter investigates the effect of severance pay on workers' voluntary mobility out of the firm. The analysis exploits a major labor market reform of the employment protection legislation in Spain in 2012 to show that a decrease in mobility costs due to a reduction in severance pay induced by the reform made workers who may expect to be displaced in the near future more likely to voluntarily leave their employer. The second chapter adds to the empirical literature on the role of social contacts on the labor market. The findings in this chapter indicate that employers are more likely to hire workers who have a connection in the firm through a former coworker, and that having a connection in the hiring firm improves re-employment outcomes of workers relative to non-connected workers. The last chapter studies differences between conventional and worker-owned firms in their adjustment to the business cycle. It documents that both types of firms respond to changing macroeconomic conditions by adjusting employment, hours of work, and wages. However, worker-owned firms exhibit greater employment resilience than conventional enterprises. Hours of work and wages, instead, adjust to a similar extent across the two types of firms.

Abstract (sommario):
As computing devices become increasingly portable, it is becoming necessary to support Mobility as a core network functionality. The availability of devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops as well as wireless network infrastructure is opening up the possibility of using Network Mobility to cater for multiple mobile nodes simultaneously. Network mobility may be useful in a number of mobile scenarios, where a large number of mobile nodes are moving in unison. A number of operational benefits stand to be gained by aggregating these nodes into a single mobile unit. Unfortunately, the current state for network mobility support, especially in terms of network layer protocols, is limited. This is in part due to the inherent complexity of mobile network scenarios, the high cost of testing mobile network protocols in operational environments and the difficulties in implementing such protocols. This thesis looks at how network mobility support may be better enabled by making experimentation with mobile networks more accessible. It shows this by first showing how analytical approaches can be useful in mobile network applications, as they abstract away from experimental details and allow for more straight forward protocol comparisons. It then goes on to look at the tools available to study mobile network protocols, where it introduces and extends an existing tool that uses virtual machines to allow for the study of mobile network protocols. Finally, it demonstrates a practical method in which mobile network support may be easily enabled in a practical setting.

Deng, Xiao Yan. "Cost-driven autonomous mobility". Thesis, Heriot-Watt University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10399/2071.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Developments in distributed system technology facilitate the sharing of resources, even at a global level. This thesis explores sharing computational resources using mobile computations, agents, and autonomic techniques. We propose autonomous mobile programs (AMPs) which are aware of their resource needs and sensitive to the environment in which they execute. AMPs periodically use a cost model to decide where to execute in a network. Unusually this form of autonomous mobility affects only where the program executes and not what it does. We present a generic AMP cost modei, together with a validated instantiation and comparative performance results for four AMPs. We demonstrate that AMPs are able to dynamically relocate themselves to minimise execution time in the presence of varying network resources. Collections of AMPs effectively perform decentralised dynamic load balancing. Experiments on small LANs show that collections of AMPs quickly obtain and maintain optimal or near-optimal ball1nce. The advantages of our decentralised approach are that it has the potential to scale to very large and dynamic networks, and to achieve improved balance, and offers guarantees to limit overheads under reasonable assumptions. In an autonomous mobile program, the program must contain explicit control of self-aware mobile coordination. To encapsulate this for common patterns of computation over collections, autonomous mobility skeletons (AMSs) are proposed. These are akin to algorithmic skeletons in being polymorphic higher order functions, but where algorithmic skeletons abstract over parallel coordination, AMSs abstract over autonomous mobile coordination. AMS cost models have been built over collection iterations. The automap, autofold and Autolterator AMSs are presented, together with performance measurements for Jocaml, Java Voyager, and JavaGo implementations on LANs. An AMS considers only the cost of the current collective computation, but it is more useful to know the cost of the entire program. We have extended our AMS cost models to be parameterised on the cost of the remainder of the program. A cost calculus to estimate the costs for the remainder of a computation at arbitrary points has been built. An automatic Jocaml cost analyser based oil the calculus produces cost equations parameterised on program variables in context, and may be used to find both cost in higher-order functions and the cost for the remainder of the program. Costed autonomous mobility skeletons (CAMSs) have been built, which not only encapsulate common patterns of autonomous mobility but take additional cost parameters to provide costs for the remainder of the program. Potential performance improvements are assessed by comparing CAMS to AMS programs. The results show that CAMS programs perform more effectively than AMS programs, because they have more accurate cost information. Hence a CAMS program may move to a faster location when the corresponding AMS program does not.

Loman, Pasi. "Mobility of Hellenistic women". Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2004. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11684/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of the current thesis is to study various aspects of women’s mobility in the so-called Hellenistic period. It will attempt to provide answers to the questions ‘why did women travel,’ ‘how common was it for women to travel,’ and most importantly, ‘did women take part in the Hellenistic colonisation processes.’ The importance of women’s mobility for the Greek societies as a whole will also be evaluated. To study the mobility of Hellenistic women we shall use a wide variety of literary sources, inscriptions and papyri. The direct sources will be supplemented with some indirect evidence and a few theoretical models. For example, it will be argued that the number of mixed marriages in the new Greek colonies and kingdoms reflects the number of women immigrants. In chapter one, it will be argued that Greek exiles habitually, although not universally, took their wives and families abroad with them. In Chapter two, an argument will be put forward that many Hellenistic mercenaries travelled together with their families. Moreover, it will be suggested that the growing number of female camp followers was one of the things that aided the successful colonisation processes of the Seleucids and the Ptolemies. In chapter three, we draw attention to the many professional, artistic, and athletic women who moved temporarily or permanently because of work. Chapter four on religion and female mobility is primarily concerned with female pilgrims, but it will also be claimed there that because of religion Greek women had to be ‘imported’ to the new Greek settlements in the East. In the fifth and final chapter, it will be argued that many more Greek women took part in the colonisation processes of the era than has previously been acknowledged.

Clark-Carter, David. "Factors affecting blind mobility". Thesis, University of Nottingham, 1985. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11158/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis contains a survey of the mobility problems of blind people, experimental analysis and evaluation of these problems and suggestions for ways in which the evaluation of mobility performance and the design of mobility aids may be improved. The survey revealed a low level of mobility among blind people, with no significant improvement since a comparable survey in 1967. A group of self taught cane users were identified and their mobility was shown to be poor or potentially dangerous. Existing measures of mobility were unable to detect improvements in performance above that achieved by competent long cane users. By using newly devised measures of environmental awareness and of gait, the advantages of the Sonic Pathfinder were demonstrated. Existing measures of psychological stress were unsatisfactory. Heart rate is affected by physical effort and has been shown to be a poor indicator of moment-to-moment stress in blind mobility. Analysis of secondary task errors showed that they occurred while obstacles were being negotiated. They did not measure stress due to anticipation of obstacles or of danger. In contrast, step length, stride time and particularly speed all show significant anticipatory effects. The energy expended in walking a given distance is least at the walker's preferred speed. When guided, blind people walk at this most efficient pace. It is therefore suggested that the ratio of actual to preferred speed is the best measure of efficiency in mobility. Both guide dogs and aids which enhance preview allow pedestrians to walk at, or close to, their preferred speed. Further experiments are needed to establish the extent to which psychological stress is present during blind mobility, since none of the conventional measures, such as heart rate and mood checklists show consistent effects. Walking speed may well prove to be the most useful measure of such stress.

Abstract (sommario):
The automotive industry is conservative and doesn’t take enough responsibility in emerging markets. Thus, countries such asChina and India have experienced huge problems with pollution as they have increased their living standards and enteredthe western consumption society. In these booming economies there are still people who live their lives according to oldcustoms, in small sustainable societies. It is also they who suffer most from the ongoing urbanization. Hence the automotiveindustry should rather adapt to their cultures than let these people adjust to the consumption society. Now, imagine a third industrial revolution where sustainable energy and manufacturing set the standards for production.Africa is then in the forefront when it comes to alternative and sustainable solutions. Maasaica is a concept from BMW whichis locally built in Serengeti using 3D printing technology, degradable materials and traditional handcraft.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is a collection of three essays with contributions to the intergenerational and intra-generational mobility literature. The essay on full risk insurance and measurement error examines the likelihood that measurement error may reconcile observed departures from perfect rank immobility in insurable consumption with the mobility predictions of full risk insurance, by generating spurious rank-breaking transitions. The essay shows that under certain assumptions full risk insurance predicts perfect rank immobility and that there exists ranges of error covariance matrices for which the mobility predictions of full risk insurance plus measurement error can not be rejected in the Peruvian data. A novel approach to test these mobility predictions is presented. The essay on discrete time-states Markov chain models applied to welfare dynamics shows that models with higher order may fit data better than the popular first-order, stationary model, and that the order of the chain, in turn, affects the estimation of equilibrium distributions. A best-practice methodology to conduct homogeneity tests between two samples with different optimal order is proposed, and an index by Shorrocks, based on the trace of the transition matrix, is extended to discrete Markov chain models with higher order. The essay on cohort heterogeneity in intergenerational mobility of education shows how cohort heterogeneity affects the analysis of cross-group homogeneity and long-term prospects of a welfare variable, based on transition matrix analysis. The essay compares the transition matrices of Peruvian groups divided by gender and ethnicity and finds genuine reductions in heterogeneity of the mobility regimes between male and female and between indigenous and non-indigenous groups among the youngest cohorts. The essay proposes a methodology to conduct first-order stochastic dominance analysis with equilibrium distributions and shows that among the youngest cohorts past stochastic dominance of male over females and non-indigenous over indigenous disappear in the long term.

Abstract (sommario):
The idea for this project initially came from an article i read about a small company in Stockholm, called “The cycling plumber” In the article, the founder of the company who explained that he was tired of looking for parking and sitting in traffic in his work-van around the tight and congest- ed streets of Stockholm. This sparked an interest from me, what options does the urban-operating handyman have in terms of transportation? Using the design process and thorough user studies, this project explores a new type of commercial vehicle segement, intended for carpenters operating in the dense city traffic of the future. The final product proposed, is called VW Artisan. It’s a versatile commercial vehicle utilizing a detachable toolbox system to improve the efficiency and comfort of the user during their daily work.

Cavaglia, Chiara. "Intergenerational and occupational mobility". Thesis, University of Essex, 2016. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/18466/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is divided into three main chapters. The first chapter provides an analysis of intergenerational mobility across countries, across cohorts and over the income distribution. It compares the patterns of intergenerational income mobility between fathers and sons in Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States. Among other findings, the analysis highlights that mobility is lowest for families at the extremes of the income distribution. Among university graduates, mobility is still lowest at the top. This calls for further research on the drivers of intergenerational mobility. The second chapter investigates why intergenerational earnings mobility is lowest at the top and at the bottom, by exploring the role of social networks. The implications of a simple model are tested on data from the United Kingdom. The inverse U-shaped mobility patterns are explained in two steps. First, a range of findings is consistent with the hypothesis that family friends affect the offspring’s educational and occupational choices. Second, the friend’s job is correlated to the parent’s job, in different ways at different income levels. Specifically, the richest and the poorest parents tend to have friends that are more similar to them than median parents. The third chapter examines the effects of job polarization on individuals and households by assessing the roles of occupational mobility, changes in occupational wage premia, mating patterns across occupations and female labour supply. The paper uses the British Household Panel Survey to examine the UK over 1991-2008. The findings suggest that most of the factors listed above have important roles. The period is characterised by pronounced movements in occupational premia and important roles for occupational mobility and assortative matching.

Treacy, Daniel John. "Mobility rehabilitation and measurement". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2021. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/26803.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis aimed to investigate strategies for mobility rehabilitation and measurement. Research methods used include: a randomised controlled trial (n=162) with a cost effectiveness analysis of a balance-focused exercise class; a validation study (n=166) of devices to measure step counts during inpatient rehabilitation and; a systematic review with meta-analysis of trials of exercise to enhance mobility in people with frailty (12 trials). An RCT was conducted to evaluate the impact of two weeks of additional standing balance circuit classes in an inpatient rehabilitation population. The intervention group improved their composite balance measure by 3.26 sec (95% CI 0.84 to 5.70, P = 0.009) at two weeks and 3.40 secs (95% CI -0.56 to 7.38, P = 0.092) at three months compared to the control group. The intervention group improved significantly on mobility with a difference in the SPPB of 1.19 (95% CI 0.52 to 1.87, P = 0.001) at two weeks and 1.00 at three months (95% CI 0.00 to 2.00, P = 0.049) compared to the control group. The median cost savings for those who received the intervention was $4,741 (95% CI $137 to $9,372); 94% of bootstraps showed that the intervention was both effective and cost saving. To determine the accuracy of activity monitors for measuring steps in people with mobility limitations, participants wore 16 activity monitors simultaneously during a 6-minute walk test. Overall, the ankle-worn StepWatch Activity Monitor showed the highest agreement with the observed step count (ICC2,1) (0.982, 95% CI 0.975 to 0.986), followed by the Fitbit One worn on the ankle (0.919, 95% CI 0.772 to 0.961) and the thigh-worn ActivPAL (0.781, 95% CI 0.231 to 0.911). All other devices showed poor agreement. To evaluate the evidence for mobility training on mobility and function for frail older people in the community a meta-analysis of RCTs was performed (12 trials, 1,317 participants). Overall mobility training resulted in an improvement in mobility with a 0.47 SMD (95% CI 0.24 to 0.71). At 6 months post intervention there was an improvement of 0.32 SMD (95% CI 0.1 to 0.54). Overall, mobility training resulted in an improvement in function of 0.60 SMD (95% CI 0.21 to 1.00). At 6 months post intervention there was little to no difference with an improvement of 1.29 SMD (95% CI -0.38 to 2.96).

Abstract (sommario):
Employability presents real challenges for organizations, institutions and individuals. These multiple issues cover several areas at once economic, political, and social and employability is becoming the corne stone for reducing pressures arising from the synergy of these three spheres. These pressures include rising unemployment, labor shortages, the development of skills, attractiviness of employees, restructuring, research versatility, etc... In fact, employability feeds speeches and managerial pratices to claim as the new social model of the XXI century Gazier (2003), Guerrero (2003), St Germes (2007).This research aims to study mobility, often referred to as a means of ensuring the continued employment, career development and ultimately securing career paths (Hategekimana, 2002; Bader, 2007; Othman, 2011). However, it must necessarily be accompanied by appropriate conditions (Sardas and Gant, 2009; Amossé et al., 2012; St Germes et al., 2013).Our general problem answers the question : What impact organizational justice in the foundation of mobility and employability of employees relationship? The chosen methodology is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with 75 stakeholders (employees and practitioners) in the hospital, telecommunications and start ups. The subjective approach career paths provide scientific insights into existing logical to take this relationship.Key words : Employability, voluntary mobility, willingness mobility, shared mobility, forced mobility, organizational justice, organizational and individual motivations

Jiron, Paola. "Mobility on the move : examining urban daily mobility practices in Santiago de Chile". Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2009. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2325/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The 'mobility turn' in social sciences (Cresswell 2006; Hannam, Sheller et al. 2006; Sheller and Urry 2006) is based on the inevitable impacts all types of mobility currently have on contemporary living and "examines how social relations necessitate the intermittent and intersecting movement of people, objects, information and images across distance" (Urry 2007: 54 ). Mobility studies include research on migration, tourism, residential mobility and urban daily mobility - the latter is the central interest of this thesis. Urban daily mobility refers to all the ways people relate experientially to change of place on a daily basis, which means that it encompasses more than the sum of journeys made or the time it takes to make them. This understanding of mobility as a social practice requires methodological access to the social meaning invested in movement, whether that movement is physical, imaginative, virtual, or a combination of these. How do practices of urban daily mobility shape the way urban living is experienced in contemporary cities. This thesis addresses mobility as a social practice and uses an ethnographic approach to explore the way mobility is experienced daily by selected individuals in Santiago de Chile. It argues that an urban daily mobility approach captures an ontological shift in the way the urban spaces are experienced. This shift has implications for the way urban relations and urban structures are observed; that is, from fixed physical entities to moving and dynamic relations. Moreover, this shift has significant implications in various areas of urban analysis, each of which is examined by this thesis. First, it requires adopting methodologies that can reveal daily mobility experiences and find adequate ways of representing these experiences. Second, it incorporates mobility into the notion of place, by introducing the concepts of mobile places and transient places it discusses the possibility of mobile place making. Third, it questions the static way of analysing urban inequality and expands the notion of urban social exclusion to incorporate differentiated mobility as another one of its causes, consequences and manifestations. Fourth, it provides a way of looking at spatial relations in the city by understanding the implications of urban daily mobility in terms of place confinement and enlargement. Finally, it affects the way urban policy interventions are understood, analysed here in terms of the implementation of the Transantiago transport system. Mobility in these terms becomes not only a practice through which daily living can be observed, it may also be a locus for encounter, conflict, negotiation and transformation, thus requiring further research as a space of socialisation.
