Abstract (sommario):
The Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) built by the Martin Marietta Company is a self-contained, propulsive backpack that provides space-suited astronauts with six degree-of-freedom precision maneuvering capability to at least 150 meters (500 feet) from the Shuttle Orbiter. Astronauts are trained to fly the MMU in the Space Operations Simulator (SOS) Laboratory located at Martin Marietta Denver Aerospace facilities in Denver, Colorado. MMU simulations in the SOS use two major devices. The first is a six-degree-of-freedom Moving Base Carriage (MBC) that allows the trainee to fly the MMU in a large room and to maneuver around and dock with full-scale targets. The second device is a large-screen television display that provides the trainee with accurate views of tumbling targets from any point in a surrounding sphere up to 300 meters (1000 feet) in diameter. Astronauts used the SOS to train for the mission to retrieve and repair the Solar Maximum satellite in April 1984 and the mission to recover two H-376 communications satellites in November 1984. Subjective comparisons by astronauts of on-orbit MMU performance to simulated MMU performance in the SOS indicate that the simulations are very realistic. Data from the Solar Maximum mission resulted in two software upgrades that increased SOS fidelity for the H-376 recovery mission: a model of contact dynamics between the MMU and a target spacecraft, and a model of forces imparted to the target by MMU thruster plumes impinging on the target during docking. Success of both satellite retrieval missions demonstrates the value of MMU space operations simulations.

Abstract (sommario):
A system-of-systems is a special complex structure in which new capabilities arise from interacting independent pieces that are controlled by multiple operators. One special kind of similar structure are military, or weapon, system-of-systems. The architecture of weapon SoS consists of the constituent systems (pieces), of interfaces and IT, of communication and exchanges occurring between the systems. The architecture of the SoS is always in a state of flux, but in warfare thedemands to change the structure of weapon SoS are emphasized. To save lives and to win both in close battles and long war is the main mission of HQ, common combat forces and supporting efforts. In the article the architecture of created SoS in different countries (mainly in U. S., but also in NATO and P. R. C.) are presented – their schemes, components, purposes and key peculiarities. These features allow to get the ontology for typical variant of SoS – they all were divided into five classes. So, we suppose that SoS may by differed by their creation, or evolution, or transition, or combination, or due to attaching to non-SoS. In general, the development planning of the military or weapon SoS is a challenging strategic analysis work because it involves various aspects, such as mission tasks, capability requirements, weapon effectiveness, and economic benefits. But in demands of lifesaving in warfare the expectable replacing soldiers via an autonomous vehicle SoS are straightforward, so it is need to understand the concept and main features of SoS.

Abstract The Third Data Release (DR3) of the Gaia mission almost doubled the number of RR Lyrae (RRL) stars release in its Specific Object Studies (SOS) catalog, in comparison with DR2. Here I provide empirically inferred 2D and 3D completeness maps for the Gaia DR3 SOS RRL catalog along with maps for the combined Gaia SOS+PS1+ASAS-SN-II catalog. The latter currently has the best performance with an improvement of 9% relative to Gaia DR3 alone and close to 20% relative to Gaia DR2 for the VC+SOS RRL, while significantly smoothing out the effect of the Gaia scanning law.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractTo keep pace with growing system complexity, Digital Engineering (DE) Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) capabilities must be expanded. A digital thread based approach is required to holistically evaluate measures of effectiveness/performance for missions. This paper describes the approach taken to connect requirements, SysML‐based architecture, and analytical Modeling and Simulation (M&S) yielding an interdisciplinary digital thread supporting mission analysis. The analysis was conducted in support of a multi‐domain (land, air, sea, and space) multi‐platform mission to detect, track, and engage the enemy. The approach used commercially available tools, strategically connected to establish an Authoritative Source of Truth (ASOT) for each piece of data, and gain insights about the System of Systems (SoS) beyond that which the component models could provide on their own. The results of these efforts produced a multipurpose SoS MBSE toolset enabling semi‐automated trade study analysis, while more importantly serving as a basis from which to expand systems engineering activities during subsequent phases of the systems' lifecycle. This paper concludes by identifying further opportunities for MBSE research and development to expand the developed capability.

Abstract (sommario):
Systems of systems (SoS) are a set of independent systems that are constantly evolving. These systems cooperate in order to achieve a common goal, known as an SoS mission. It is difficult to capture their behaviours while operating in a hierarchical, cooperative and evolutionary structure. Thus, a software architecture based approach is defined in order to model and analyze these systems, reducing their increasing complexity. It ought to describe an SoS on both structural and behavioural levels. In this paper, ArchSoS, an ADL dedicated to describe SoS software architectures, is extended with a syntax-driven formal description, based on Bigraphic Reactive Systems (BRS). SoS defined via ArchSoS have both a graphical and a textual view. For this syntax to be executable, and to verify SoS evolutions, an operational semantic for ArchSoS is defined. It is implemented in Maude language to permit ArchSoS behavioural simulations, and its formal analysis is done through Linear Temporal Logic (LTL). The proposed approach is illustrated through a Crisis Response SoS as a case study.

Abstract (sommario):
Social and organizational innovations are one of the most effective ways to gain social collaboration for effective, rapid, and coordinated interventions. An analysis of the relationship among organizational performance (OP), social innovations (SI) and organizational innovation (OI) in social organizations (SOs) is little discussed in the literature and much less with main component analysis. This paper is an effort to provide some empirical evidences about social and organizational innovations that social organizations in China have implemented to address the social issues of the society. A survey of Chinese SO’s is conducted during beginning two months of 2022 in provinces of Jiangsu, Guangdong and Zhejiang to attain the statistics and assessing the insights of the executives of the SOs participating in this study with respect to organizational performance, social and organizational innovations. The technique used to select the sample is a non-probabilistic sampling and multiple linear regression model is applied to determine the partial impact of organizational innovations and social innovations on the organizational performance. The grouping of the variables is carried out through main components analysis. The empirical findings of the study highlight that Chinese SOs are innovative because they adopt management strategies to address the social issues associated with their institutional mission. There are four groups of derived components from organizational and social innovations based on the empirical evidence: SO’s innovative activities to modify the environment; inside innovative measures to enhance SO’s performance; innovative activities of SO’s to enhance their relationships with outside actors; innovative measures to improve the management of SOs related to their mission and institutional projects. The findings of this study offer an efficient solution to government and policy makers for involving SOs in terms of planning of social development in China. The social and organizational innovations are very necessary to overcome the social issues so government should encourage the establishment and sustainability of social organizations.

Abstract (sommario):
Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) path planning is crucial in UAV mission fulfillment, with the aim of finding a satisfactory path within affordable time and moderate computation resources. The problem is challenging due to the complexity of the flight environment, especially in three-dimensional scenarios with obstacles. To solve the problem, a hybrid differential symbiotic organisms search (HDSOS) algorithm is proposed by combining the mutation strategy of differential evolution (DE) with the modified strategies of symbiotic organism search (SOS). The proposed algorithm preserves the local search capability of SOS, and at the same time has impressive global search ability. The concept of traction function is put forward and used to improve the efficiency. Moreover, a perturbation strategy is adopted to further enhance the robustness of the algorithm. Extensive simulation experiments and comparative study in two-dimensional and three-dimensional scenarios show the superiority of the proposed algorithm compared with particle swarm optimization (PSO), DE, and SOS algorithm.

Abstract (sommario):
Updates to the military rotorcraft handling qualities specification are currently being considered that address the high-speed flight regime envisioned for the Future Vertical Lift platform of the U. S. Army. A team that features industry and academia has developed and evaluated a set of mission task elements (MTEs) that are defined to address vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) high-speed handling qualities. Following the mission-oriented approach upon which ADS-33E-PRF is based, the MTEs were designed to meet different levels of precision and aggressiveness. Tracking MTEs based on a sum-of-sines (SOS) command signal were defined for precision, aggressive, and precision, nonaggressive applications. The command signals were derived from fixed-wing analogs that have long been used to evaluate aircraft handling qualities. While the precision, aggressive SOS tracking tasks, the primary subject of this paper, are surrogates for air-to-air tracking and nap-of-the-earth tracking, the known forcing function allows for complete open- and closed-loop pilot—vehicle system identification. The MTE objectives, descriptions, and performance criteria were assessed and refined via several checkout piloted simulation sessions. Formal evaluations were then conducted by Army test pilots at four simulator facilities, each featuring a unique high-speed platform including a generic winged-compound helicopter, two tiltrotor configurations, and a compound helicopter with coaxial rotors. To aid in the MTE evaluation process, baseline VTOL configurations were varied to achieve different handling qualities levels. Quantitative measures based on task performance and qualitative measures based on pilot ratings, comments, and debrief questionnaires were used to assess MTE effectiveness. The piloted simulation results demonstrated that the SOS tracking MTEs provided an effective means to discern precision, aggressive handling qualities in high-speed flight.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT The economic effects of isolation policies resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic have led small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to look for alternatives to survive. Within this crisis scenario, an engaged university has an important role to play in a regional context in addressing not only health issues, but also any resultant social and economic problems. An engaged university needs to take actions that go beyond its traditional missions of education and research - it has to deliver knowledge to society. This paper analyzes a university-community project in Brazil to identify the necessary elements that help promote a regionally-engaged university: the SOS-PME Advisory Network project, which was originally designed to assist SMEs during the crisis. As a result, we identified elements necessary for promoting the university’s third mission - social engagement by way of a university-community project: an engaged team, multidisciplinarity, project management, agility, alliances, a communication strategy, institutional support, and reputation.

Abstract (sommario):
The unmanned combat system-of-systems (UCSoS) in modern warfare is comprised of various interconnected entities that work together to support mission accomplishment. The soaring number of entities makes the UCSoS fragile and susceptible to triggering cascading effects when exposed to uncertain disturbances such as attacks or failures. Reconfiguring the UCSoS to restore its effectiveness in a self-coordinated and adaptive manner based on the battlefield situation and operational requirements has attracted increasing attention. In this paper, we focus on the UCSoS reconstruction with heterogeneous costs, where the collaboration nodes may have different reconstruction costs. Specifically, we adopt the heterogeneous network to capture the interdependencies among combat entities and propose a more representative metric to evaluate the UCSoS reconstruction effectiveness. Next, we model the combat network reconstruction problem with heterogeneous costs as a nonlinear optimization problem and prove its NP-hardness. Then, we propose an approach called SoS-Restorer, which is based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL), to address the UCSoS reconstruction problem. The results show that SoS-Restorer can quickly generate reconstruction strategies and improve the operational capabilities of the UCSoS by about 20∼60% compared to the baseline algorithm. Furthermore, even when the size of the UCSoS exceeds that of the training data, SoS-Restorer exhibits robust generalization capability and can efficiently produce satisfactory results in real time.

Abstract (sommario):
Democracy requires open public service broadcasting (PSB) institutions that constantly interact with active informed citizens. This article posits that a more proactive network of civil society across Southern Africa can produce an impact on PSB institutions in these countries enhancing reform and accountability to the public. We enter this topic by identifying pathways towards increased cooperation among public service broadcasters, civil society coalitions and other stakeholders in South Africa and Zimbabwe. The main focus is on the interaction between broadcasters, policy-makers and civil society groups, namely SOS: Support Public Broadcasting in South Africa and the Media Alliance of Zimbabwe, two leading media activist organizations in Southern Africa. The engagement by such networks can deepen public interest and reconnect PSB institutions and PSB staff to the PSB mandate and mission. Civil society coalitions working collaboratively with PSB will engender a context within which a collaboratively defined PSB mission, institutional structure and programme outcomes are constantly foregrounded in the operations and performance of the broadcasters.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Nuclear disasters have severe and far-reaching consequences. Emergency managers and first responders from utility owners to local, state, and federal civil authorities and the Department of Defense (DoD) must be well prepared in order to rapidly mitigate the disaster and protect the public and environment from spreading damage. Given the high risks, modeling and simulation (M&S) plays a significant role in planning and training for the spectrum of derivate scenarios. Existing reactor models are largely legacy, stove-piped designs lacking interoperability between themselves and other M&S tools for emergency preparedness system evaluation and training. Unmanned systems present a growing area of technology promising significant improvement in response and mitigation. To bridge the gap between current and future models, we propose a conceptual model (CM) for integrating live, virtual, and constructive (LVC) models with nuclear disaster and mitigation models utilizing a system-of-systems (SoS) approach. The CM offers to synergistically enhance current reactor and dispersion simulations with intervening avatar and agent simulations. The SoS approach advances life cycle stages including concept exploration, system design, engineering, training, and mission rehearsal. Component subsystems of the CM are described along with an explanation of input/output requirements. A notional implementation is described. Finally, applications to analysis and training, an evaluation of the CM based on recently proposed criteria found in the literature, and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
Traditional tools and methodologies for mesoscale observation of oceanographic phenomena are limited by under-sampling and data latency. In this article we evaluate three different scenario variants of an architecture for how heterogeneous sensor nodes can be integrated with satellite remote sensing. Independent space and marine sensing platforms are interconnected either directly or by means of a ground-based mission control center responsible for data processing, relay, and coordination of the assets. A wave-propelled unmanned surface vehicle (USV) persistently collects in situ data of the targeted phenomenon. In two variants of the architecture, a dedicated small satellite acts as a sensor node, a data processing facility and a communication node. We have used a System-of-Systems (SoS) modeling approach coupled with operational simulations in different locations on Earth, in order to support the proposed methodology and investigate quantitatively the reduction the data latency to end-users. Through a combination of field experiments and simulations we estimate how the different scenarios perform with respect to providing remote sensing data that are used to create a measurement and navigation plan for the autonomous vessel.

Abstract (sommario):
Compared with men, women appear to have a decreased sympathetic nervous system (SNS) response to stress. The two manifestations where the sexual dimorphism has been the most pronounced involve the response of the SNS to fluid shifts and fuel metabolism during exercise. The objectives of this study were to investigate whether a similar sexual dimorphism was found in the response to spaceflight. To do so, we compared catecholamine excretion by male and female astronauts from two similar shuttle missions, Spacelab Life Sciences 1 (SLS1, 1991) and 2 (SLS2, 1993) for evidence of sexual dimorphism. To evaluate the variability of the catecholamine response in men, we compared catecholamine excretion from the two SLS missions against the 1996 Life and Microgravity Sciences Mission (LMS) and the 1973 Skylab missions. Results: No gender- or mission-dependent changes were found with epinephrine. Separating out the SLS1/2 data by gender shows that norepinephrine excretion was essentially unchanged with spaceflight in women (98 ± 10%; n = 3) and substantially decreased with the men (41 ± 9%; n= 4, P < 0.05). Data are a percentage of mean preflight value ± SE. Comparisons among males demonstrated significant mission effects on norepinephrine excretion. After flight, there was a transient increase in norepinephrine but no evidence of any gender-specific effects. We conclude that norepinephrine excretion during spaceflight is both mission and gender dependent. Men show the greater response, with at least three factors being involved, a response to microgravity, energy balance, and the ratio of carbohydrate to fat in the diet.

Abstract (sommario):
ABET accreditation is sought globally for engineering and technology academic programs due to the quality, added value, and competitiveness it adds to students, program, and the university locally, regionally, and globally. Aligning with its mission to prepare students as global citizens for future career aspirations and lifelong learning through quality teaching, the American University in the Emirates (AUE) focuses on outcome-based education to ensure the employability of graduates and hence soon realized the significance of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology-Computing Accreditation Commission (ABET-CAC) standard toward the Computer Science (CS) program. While pursuing ABET accreditation was challenging, the outcome was positive, and currently, the Computer Science Program, with its two specializations in Network Security and Digital Forensics is ABET-accredited. The process required support from all units within the institution and was a great learning experience for all stakeholders. ABET draws generic requirements to be fulfilled by a program seeking accreditation without a detailed procedure to achieve them. However, there is little information about achieving these requirements, especially criterion 4: continuous improvement, which most programs fail to comply with according to ABET. This study presented a comprehensive and reproducible methodology that addresses our successful efforts in aligning the CS program with ABET-CAC requirements by emphasizing criterion 4. This article reported the evaluation of Student Outcomes number one and two for the academic year 2020–2021 through a comprehensive framework. The framework showed data collection, data reporting and analysis, actions, and recommendations for the next academic cycle. The framework showed a mathematical model for calculating the Student Outcomes (SOs) attainment based on the mapped Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs). Finally, the recommendations were reported. We believe this article established a solid foundation that would be beneficial for insinuations pursuing ABET accreditation.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
PurposeSocial enterprises (SEs) face tensions when combining financial and social missions, and this is particularly evident in the scaling process. Although extant research mainly focuses on SEs that integrate their social and financial missions, this study aims to unpack social impact scaling strategies in differentiated hybrid organizations (DHOs) through the case of African SEs.Design/methodology/approachThe study entails an inductive multiple case study approach based on four case SEs: work integration social enterprises (WISEs) and fair trade producer social enterprises (FTPSEs) in Uganda and Kenya. A total of 24 semi-structured interviews were collected together with multiple secondary data sources and then coded and analyzed through the rigorous Gioia et al. (2013) methodology to build a theoretical model.FindingsThe results indicate that SEs, as differentiated hybrids, implement four types of social impact scaling strategies toward beneficiaries and benefits (penetration, bundling, spreading and diversification) and unveil different dual mission tensions generated by each scaling strategy. The study also shows mutually reinforcing mechanisms named cross-bracing actions, which are paradoxical actions connected to one another for navigating tensions and ensuring dual mission during scaling.Research limitations/implicationsThis study provides evidence of four strategies for scaling social impact, with associated challenges and response mechanisms based on the cross-bracing effect between social and financial missions. Thus, the research provides a clear framework (social impact scaling matrix) for investigating differentiation in hybridity at scaling and provides new directions on how SEs scale their impact, with implications for social entrepreneurship and dual mission management literature.Practical implicationsThe model offers a practical tool for decision-makers in SEs, such as managers and social entrepreneurs, providing insights into what scaling pathways to implement (one or multiples) and, more importantly, the implications and possible solutions. Response mechanisms are also useful for tackling specific tensions, thereby contributing to addressing the challenges of vulnerable, marginalized and low-income individuals. The study also offers implications for policymakers, governments and other ecosystem actors such as nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and social investors.Originality/valueDespite the growing body of literature on scaling social impact, only a few studies have focused on differentiated hybrids, and no evidence has been provided on how they scale only the social impact (without considering commercial scaling). This study brings a new perspective to paradox theory and hybridity, showing paradoxes come into view at scaling, and documenting how from a differentiation approach to hybridity, DHOs also implemented cross-bracing actions, which are reinforcement mechanisms, thus suggesting connections and synergies among the actions in social and financial mission, where such knowledge is required to better comprehend how SEs can achieve a virtuous cycle of profits and reinvestments in social impact.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The Earth Exploration Satellite Service (EESS) for passive sensing has a primary frequency allocation in the 1400–1427 MHz band. All emissions unauthorized in this band are called RFI (Radio Frequency Interference). The SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) mission is greatly perturbed by RFI impeding ocean salinity retrieval, especially in coastal areas such as the SCS (South China Sea), where the observed data has been discarded massively. At present, there is no way to eliminate the RFI impact on the retrieved salinity, other than by detecting and shutting down the emissions from the sources. However, it may be effective in a scientific sense if RFI can be quantified and applied to the salinity retrieval process. Therefore, this study proposes an RFI measuring method that can investigate contamination in both prominent and moderate respects, aroused either by on-site emissions or nearby continents. Based on the proposed method, two levels of hierarchical RFI maps of the SCS region, including the separated one and the merged one, are presented and discussed, indicating more severe contamination in northern and western SCS. Moreover, to verify the generalization of the method on open oceans far from continents, an area in the middle central Pacific is selected and tested. The result shows few or no RFI in this unattended region, which is consistent with the authors’ knowledge. This study presents the concept of the “RFI map” to describe the contamination, which will hopefully help researchers comprehend the RFI state intuitively and assist in ocean salinity retrieval statistically.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper discusses an environment being developed to model a mission of the Space Launch System (SLS) and the Multipurpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) being launched from Kennedy Space Center (KSC) to the International Space Station (ISS). Several models representing different phases of the mission such as the ground operations processes, engineered systems, and range components such as failure tree, blast, gas dispersion, and debris modeling are explained. These models are built using different simulation paradigms such as continuous, system dynamics, discrete-event, and agent-based simulation modeling. The High Level Architecture (HLA) is the backbone of this distributed simulation. The different design decisions and the information fusion scheme of this unique environment are explained in detail for decision-making. This can also help in the development of exploration missions beyond the International Space Station.

Abstract (sommario):
We analyzed the averaged through the year power of local tissue absorbed doses measured by the standard instruments over 15 years of station Mir operation (28 missions) and analogous data over 22 years of the International space station (ISS) operation (67 missions) within solar cycles (SCs) 22–25. This is a huge set of daily measurements of dosimeters R-16 (ioinization chamber D2) and 4 semiconductor dosimeters DB-8, located in different compartments. We also present the experimental and calculated absorbed and equivalent doses to the skin, lens and hematopoietic system (HPS) received within a day and year in space. It was found that in all Mir and ISS missions the equivalent doses to these tissues were below the limits adopted for orbital missions. In many missions of 6 to 8 months, the effective and equivalent doses to the CNS, lens and skin did not exceed even the lower dose limits prescribed by Russian radiation safety standard NRB-99/2009 for nuclear industry. Maximal equivalent dose values to the lens and skin in a year-long mission did not exceed 404 mSv. These values are less than the existing limits for space missions by 32 % for the lens and 5 times for the skin.

Abstract (sommario):
This study outlines a concept that would leverage the existing proton accelerator at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) of Oak Ridge National Laboratory to enable transformative science via one world-class facility serving two missions: Single Event Effects (SEE) and Muon Spectroscopy (μSR). The μSR portion would deliver the world’s highest flux and highest resolution pulsed muon beams for material characterization purposes, with precision and capabilities well beyond comparable facilities. The SEE capabilities deliver neutron, proton, and muon beams for aerospace industries that are facing an impending challenge to certify equipment for safe and reliable behavior under bombardment from atmospheric radiation originating from cosmic and solar rays. With negligible impact on the primary neutron scattering mission of the SNS, the proposed facility will have enormous benefits for both science and industry. We have designated this facility “SEEMS.”

Abstract (sommario):
We present a study on the potential of the Copernicus Imaging Microwave Radiometer (CIMR) mission for the global monitoring of Sea-Surface Salinity (SSS) using Level-4 (gap-free) analysis processing. Space-based SSS are currently provided by the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellites. However, there are no planned missions to guarantee continuity in the remote SSS measurements for the near future. The CIMR mission is in a preparatory phase with an expected launch in 2026. CIMR is focused on the provision of global coverage, high resolution sea-surface temperature (SST), SSS and sea-ice concentration observations. In this paper, we evaluate the mission impact within the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) SSS processing chain. The CMEMS SSS operational products are based on a combination of in situ and satellite (SMOS) SSS and high-resolution SST information through a multivariate optimal interpolation. We demonstrate the potential of CIMR within the CMEMS SSS operational production after the SMOS era. For this purpose, we implemented an Observing System Simulation Experiment (OSSE) based on the CMEMS MERCATOR global operational model. The MERCATOR SSSs were used to generate synthetic in situ and CIMR SSS and, at the same time, they provided a reference gap-free SSS field. Using the optimal interpolation algorithm, we demonstrated that the combined use of in situ and CIMR observations improves the global SSS retrieval compared to a processing where only in situ observations are ingested. The improvements are observed in the 60% and 70% of the global ocean surface for the reconstruction of the SSS and of the SSS spatial gradients, respectively. Moreover, the study highlights the CIMR-based salinity patterns are more accurate both in the open ocean and in coastal areas. We conclude that CIMR can guarantee continuity for accurate monitoring of the ocean surface salinity from space.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. Using the proposed Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission as a case study, this paper investigates how the presence and nature of vegetation influence the values of geophysical variables retrieved from multi-angle microwave radiometer observations. Synthetic microwave brightness temperatures were generated using a model for the coherent propagation of electromagnetic radiation through a stratified medium applied to account simultaneously for the emission from both the soil and any vegetation canopy present. The synthetic data were calculated at the look-angles proposed for the SMOS mission for three different soil-moisture states (wet, medium wet and dry) and four different vegetation covers (nominally grass, crop, shrub and forest). A retrieval mimicking that proposed for SMOS was then used to retrieve soil moisture, vegetation water content and effective temperature for each set of synthetic observations. For the case of a bare soil with a uniform profile, the simpler Fresnel model proposed for use with SMOS gave identical estimates of brightness temperatures to the coherent model. However, to retrieve accurate geophysical parameters in the presence of vegetation, the opacity coefficient (one of two parameters used to describe the effect of vegetation on emission from the soil surface) used within the SMOS retrieval algorithm needed to be a function of look-angle, soil-moisture status, and vegetation cover. The effect of errors in the initial specification of the vegetation parameters within the coherent model was explored by imposing random errors in the values of these parameters before generating synthetic data and evaluating the errors in the geophysical parameters retrieved. Random errors of 10% result in systematic errors (up to 0.5°K, 3%, and ~0.2 kg m-2 for temperature, soil moisture, and vegetation content, respectively) and random errors (up to ~2°K, ~8%, and ~2 kg m-2 for temperature, soil moisture and vegetation content, respectively) that depend on vegetation cover and soil-moisture status. Keywords: passive microwave, soil moisture, vegetation, SMOS, retrieval

The paper has attempted to bring out the importance of social enterprises (SEs) and the role they play in accelerating the 2030 development agenda. SEs are primarily hybrid organizations emanating from the area of social entrepreneurship. There are, nonetheless, challenges that these organizations encounter. The paper presents key challenges confronting the sector. These include operational issues, management conflicts and governance, inadequate regulations for raising resources, and operational transparency. In a complex socio-economic environment system with SEs certain to be an enabler towards sustainability, it is important that negative outcomes be addressed based on appropriate strategies and interventions. An enabling environment would support SEs and related actors work together in improving institutional capabilities and bringing sustainable innovation and transformation across the complete spectrum.

Abstract (sommario):
Satellite remote sensing is a power tool for the long-term monitoring of vegetation. This work, with reference to a regional case study, investigates remote sensing potentialities for describing the annual phenology of rangelands and broad-leaved forests at the landscape level with the aim of detecting eventual effects of climate change in the Alpine region of the Aosta Valley (Northwest (NW) Italy). A first analysis was aimed at estimating phenological metrics (PMs) from satellite images time series and testing the presence of trends along time. A further investigation concerned evapotranspiration from vegetation (ET) and its variation along the years. Additionally, in both the cases the following meteorological patterns were considered: air temperature anomalies, precipitation trends and the timing of yearly seasonal snow melt. The analysis was based on the time series (TS) of different MODIS collections datasets together with Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station data (CHIRPS) collection obtained through Google Earth Engine. Ground weather stations data from the Centro Funzionale VdA ranging from 2000 to 2019 were used. In particular, the MOD13Q1 v.6, MOD16A2 and MOD10A1 v.6 collections were used to derive PMs, ET and snow cover maps. The SRTM (shuttle radar topography mission) DTM (digital terrain model) was also used to describe local topography while the Coordination of Information on the Environment (CORINE) land cover map was adopted to investigate land use classes. Averagely in the area, rangelands and broad-leaved forests showed that the length of season is getting longer, with a general advance of the SOS (start of the season) and a delay in the EOS (end of the season). With reference to ET, significant increasing trends were generally observed. The water requirement from vegetation appeared to have averagely risen about 0.05 Kg·m−2 (about 0.5%) per year in the period 2000–2019, for a total increase of about 1 Kg·m−2 in 20 years (corresponding to a percentage difference in water requirement from vegetation of about 8%). This aspect can be particularly relevant in the bottom of the central valley, where the precipitations have shown a statistically significant decreasing trend in the period 2000–2019 (conversely, no significant variation was found in the whole territory). Additionally, the snowpack timing persistence showed a general reduction trend. PMs and ET and air temperature anomalies, as well as snow cover melting, proved to have significantly changed their values in the last 20 years, with a continuous progressive trend. The results encourage the adoption of remote sensing to monitor climate change effects on alpine vegetation, with particular focus on the relationship between phenology and other abiotic factors permitting an effective technological transfer.

SUMMARY First Peter contains a number of themes that demonstrate the author’s burden for the Church. The letter is known for its instructions to slaves, husbands and wives, for its views on suffering, on social justice and on leadership in the Church. Yet this article suggests that the social engagement of 1 Peter also incorporates his missional thinking. The article takes up challenges from various contemporary scholars to analyse the question how the theology of 1 Peter informs this social engagement. It offers a missional reading of the letter which shows to what extent it invites the readers to participate in the mission of God and, more specifically, how Peter’s missional strategy works. Specific attention is paid to the household codes. After analysing the implications of re-telling the story of God’s mission in Christ for Peter’s audience, and evaluating the consequences of their Christian identity for participating in mission, the article tackles the household codes by assessing the extent to which they invite readers to change the world around them. At the end there are some conclusions for our time.

At the end there are some conclusions for our time.RÉSUMÉLa première épître de Pierre contient divers thèmes qui témoignent de la préoccupation de son auteur pour l’Église.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The spatial heterogeneity and temporal variation of soil moisture and surface heat fluxes are key to many geophysical and environmental studies. It has been demonstrated that they can be mapped by assimilating soil thermal and wetness information into surface energy balance models. The aim of this work is to determine whether enhancing the spatial resolution or temporal sampling frequency of soil moisture data could improve soil moisture or surface heat flux estimates. Two experiments are conducted in an area mainly covered by grassland, and land surface temperature (LST) observations from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) mission are assimilated together with either an enhanced L-band passive soil moisture product (9 km, 2–3 days) from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission or a merged product (36 km, quasi-daily) from the SMAP and the Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission. The results suggest that the availability of soil moisture observations is increased by 41% after merging data from the SMAP and the SMOS missions. A comparison with results from a previous study that assimilated a coarser SMAP soil moisture product (36 km, 2–3 days) suggests that enhancing the temporal sampling frequency of soil moisture observations leads to improved soil moisture estimates at both the surface and root zone, and the largest improvement is seen in the bias metric (0.008 and 0.007 m3 m−3 on average at the surface and root zone, respectively). Enhancing the spatial resolution, however, does not significantly improve soil moisture estimates, particularly at the surface. Surface heat flux estimates from assimilating soil moisture data of different spatial or temporal resolutions are very similar.
