Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Background and objectives: The sea is polluted with heavy metals that accumulate in fishes. Consumption of these fishes pose health risk. The aim of this study is to respectiely assess the concentrations and health risks of lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), tin (Sn), manganese (Mn), and mercury (Hg) in canned fish samples. Methods: The study focused on Mackerel, Sardine and Tuna. Mackerel brands are African Queen, Geisha, Ena Pa, and Milano; Sardine includes Titus, Festiva, Ohemaa, and Princess, while Tuna were Lele and Star Kist. Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry was used. Results: The mean concentrations of lead and mercury in the Mackerel, Sardine and Tuna were respectively 0.142± 0.017, 0.122±0.034, 0.141±0.006 µg/g and 0.126± 0.017, 0.132± 0.012, 0.263± 0.006 µg/g below the recommended limits of 0.3 and 0.5 µg/g by EU Reg. No 1881/2006. The concentrations of zinc, iron, tin, and manganese were within the acceptable respective limits. A health risk assessment based on the criteria established by the US EPA revealed no significant health risks associated with the concentrations of the metals. Conclusion: The canned fish samples exhibited low levels of heavy metal contamination, indicating that the fish samples pose no significant health risks to consumers.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
In his lauding review of Dimitrije Matic?s (1821-1884) History of Philosophy (largely based on ?. Schwegler), published in 1865 in the journal Vila, started and edited by Stojan Novakovic (1842-1915), Alimpije Vasiljevic (1831-1911) assessed the pattern of the book as one of the latest and best in the field. In his critical reaction to Vasiljevic?s review, Milan Kujundzic (1842-1893) challenged his assessment. For the generation of the United Serbian Youth, Hegelianism was unacceptable for two reasons: because of increasingly influential positivism (naturalism) and scientism, and because of the strengthening of the ideology of Greater Germany with which it was equated. Both Vasiljevic and Kujundzic were liberals. Their debate, however, was harsh and long, and the intellectual public followed it with ?particular attention?. They polemicized about, inter alia, the actual philosophical relevance of the issue of idealism vs. materialism. Even though the debate showed inconsistencies and contradictions in argumentation, it led to independence in problem formulation and solving.

Abstract (sommario):
Focusing on the initial stage (until 1903) of the Serbian Radical movement the paper attempts to delineate and explicate the main phases of its political maturation. In its initial stage Serbian Radicalism passed through several significant phases. The earliest phase (1869-80) may be named the period of rudimentary Radicalism. The movement was unorganized and oscillated between the ideas of socialism, anarchism and peasant democracy. The year 1881 saw the founding of the Radical Party as the first organized political party in Serbia with its own internal structure and programme. It opened the second phase, known as a period of militant Radicalism (1881-86) marked by its organized and uncompromising opposition to the existing system and the personal regime of king Milan Obrenovic, culminating in the Timok rebellion in 1883. The period of pragmatic Radicalism (1886-94) saw a recuperation and reorganization of the movement, its inclusion as a legitimate political force into the existing order, the passing in 1888 of a new constitution predominantly influenced by Radical political views and the Party?s first compromises with other factors on the domestic political scene. Finally, there was a period of overpowered Radicalism (1894-1903). Without abandoning their fundamental ideological tenets, the Radicals were forced to make some serious political compromises and moderate their political programme in order to remain in the race for power.

Abstract (sommario):
Garašanin's Progressive Government proposed to the National Assembly, which was held in Niš in May 1884, to adopt amendments to several laws of a political nature after the demise of the Timok rebellion. These were the bills amending the law: on the press, on the associations and choirs, on the municipality, and on the gendarmerie. By adopting these repressive laws, the progressives practically prevented the work of political parties, reinforced police surveillance over the municipalities, and increased the gendarmerie forces further. The lost war with Bulgaria in 1885 marked the beginning of the political breakdown of the Progressives and King Milan, who was close to them, although they repeatedly disagreed with his political actions. However, their departure from the political scene did not begin immediately after the lost war, as many expected, but took another year and a half for the Progressives, and three years for King Milan. On the other hand, the Radicals began to believe in the possibility that the defeat that they experienced during the Timok rebellion could come to a victory, that is, to power. A long-standing march against the Radical Party was halted, as King Milan realized that he could not rule with the constant ignorance of the will of the people. The broad popular masses led by the People's Radical Party should have approached the throne and the dynasty and together with the representatives of the Progressive Party alleviate the difficult situation created by the war against Bulgaria, and later provide the crown prince with a safer ruler. The royal attempt to persuade the Radicals to agree with the Progressives failed, as representatives of the Radical Party at the assembly held in February 1886 in Niš resolutely refused an agreement with the Progressives. In April 1886, they signed an agreement with the Liberals, which contained a joint program of work of both parties. The most important points of this program, which was a reflection of the compromise on both sides, concerned the change of the Constitution in the internal and the improvement of relations with the Russians in foreign policy. In June 1887, a liberal-radical government was formed, the first coalition government in the political history of Serbia.

Abstract (sommario):
Andrea Costa, a contemporary observer and sometime participant in Italian socialist politics, spoke in 1886 in defense of the Lombardy-based Partito operaio, whose leaders had been arrested and its newspaper muzzled. He offered a classic Marxist interpretation of the party's emergence as a “natural product of… our economic and social conditions … the concentration of the means of production in few hands, distancing the worker more and more from his tools … and likewise a product of our political conditions … electoral reform, by means of which the working class … can affirm itself as a class apart.” Further, this party had been founded in Milan, “where modern industry has penetrated more than elsewhere,” and closely following the expansion of the suffrage in 1881 (Italy 1886: 419).

Abstract (sommario):
Milan Kujundžić Aberdar is a well-known person in Serbian science. However, his political activity has not been sufficiently researched. This paper tends to present his political activity in the period until 1880. The emphasis here is on his work within the United Serb Youth (1866‒1871), as well as on the political steps which he undertook during the 1870s. One of the aims of this paper is to show how Kujundžić, who had been perceived as a member of the Serbian liberal youth, became one of the ideologues of the Serbian Progressive Party, whose subsequent leaders were Milan Piroćanac, Milutin Garašаnin, and Stojan Novaković. This paper is based on the unpublished material of domestic provenance, and the relevant scientific literature.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Giulia Grisi (1811–1869), the first Adalgisa in Vincenzo Bellini's Norma (Milan, 1831), broke her Italian contract and left for Paris in 1832, where she became prima donna under Gioachino Rossini at the Théâtre Italien. In addition, she made her London debut in 1834, replacing Maria Malibran in the young Victoria's eyes and ears with her singing, acting, and flawless beauty, especially in the operas of the future Queen's favourite, Vincenzo Bellini. Grisi's real goal, however, was to conquer Giuditta Pasta's throne by embodying Norma: she first performed the role in London in 1835, and then in almost every season until 1861. Despite her success, she was unjustly attacked for copying Pasta, as established by Thomas G. Kaufman. Bellini himself likewise misjudged her, stating that “the elevated characters she does not understand, does not feel, because she has neither the instinct nor the education to sustain them with the nobility and the lofty style they demand.” “In Norma she will be a nonentity; … the role of Adalgisa is the only one suited to her character.” Nonetheless, even hostile critics like Henry F. Chorley had to acknowledge that “her Norma, doubtless her grandest performance … was an improvement on the model [i.e. Pasta]; … there was in it the wild ferocity of the tigress, but a certain frantic charm therewith, which carried away the hearer – nay, which possibly belongs to the true reading of the character.” The purpose of this article is to investigate Grisi's London reception, primarily in the context of her Norma performances.

Abstract (sommario):
After obtaining autonomy from the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in 1831, the Serbian Orthodox Church gradually established and strenghtened its position by means of constitutions and laws of the Principality of Serbia which were passed in the course of the XIX century. The established status of an official state church implied considerable priviledges but also the readiness to accept potential candidates designated by the Prince or the Government for the highest hierarch positions as well as the state’s control over practically all segments of religious life. This relationship in which provisions of the Canon Law were frequently ignored, forged a kind of partnership enabling the state to strenghten its economy and democratic institutions while at the same time providing the church with an opportunity to improve its internal organization, the quality of candidates entering priesthood and to create favourable conditions for its spiritual mission. The dissatisfaction with the Russian politics after the Congress of Berlin and the shift towards a new foreign policy relying heavily on the support of Austria-Hungary, soon took toll on the relations between Prince Milan and Metropolitan Mihailo who was a notorious Russophile and a fervent advocate of the Pan-Slavic solidarity. Dissatisfied with the Metropolitan’s activities in Bosnia, the new ally demanded that the Prince remove the dangerous opponent which proved to be a daunting task, due to the Metropolitan’s popularity and his demonstrated leadership skills. In 1881, under the pretext that the Church opposed the Tax law, the Prince’s Government, led by the Progressive Political Party first removed Metropolitan Mihailo which was followed by the removal of all other remaining disobedient Episcopes in 1883. The 1882 amendments to the Law on Church Authorities of the Eastern Orthodox Religion which resulted in changes of the composition of the Assembly of Bishops and included more lay people in the body tasked with the election of the Metropolitan, represented a genuine coup against the Church unprecedented in its centuries long history and practically annulled the canonical order governing the life and functioning of the Orthodox Churches. Having elected the new Metropolitan and Episcopes, the Government led by the Progressive Party established such an organization of the Church which was utterly dependent on the will of the state and the balance of powers on the Serbia’s political scene. The altered political circumstances brought about by King Milan’s abdication and normalization of relations with the Radical Party, enabled Metropolitan Mihailo’s return and reestablishment of previous order in the Church. The ancient Canons, which were ignored at one point in history, proved their vitality, but these events were also convenient for the growing middle class to send a clear message to the Church that the old times of harmonized activity were gone and that the new forces were taking over the public and state affairs.

Abstract (sommario):
‘With books or with the world?’ Alienation effects without disorientation in Viaggio e maravigliose avventure d’un veneziano by Francesco Contarini This paper investigates the forms and effects of displacement in Viaggio e maravigliose avventure d’un veneziano ch’esce per la prima volta dalle lagune e si reca a Padova e a Milano, published anonymously in Milan in 1818. According to Luigi Catucci, the author is Francesco Contarini, who translated many travel books for the editor Sonzogno between 1816 and 1817: this would explain the noticeable intertextual dialogue between the Viaggio and other travel writings, both fictional and non-fictional. Some allusions to Vasco de Gama’s and James Cook’s geographical explorations reveal the author’s interest in travel as an anthropological experience, while quotations from Swift and De Maistre suggest a familiarity with the literary conventions and the most recent renewal of the European novel. From a theoretical point of view, the essay examines the interaction between travel literature, (anti-)novel, récit excentrique, and parody, in order to show that literary contamination works as an estrangement device. At the same time, this theoretical interpretation is evaluated (from an analytical and interpretative point of view) in relation to the narrative techniques through which Contarini expresses the alienation-effect of the first-person dramatized narrator, prompting a strong sense of disorientation in the reader (but not in the main character).

Writing in 1882, Edmond Vander Straeten was the first to argue that the name ‘Juschino’ among the singers of Galeazzo Maria Sforza's household chapel referred to the composer Josquin des Prez. Assuming a birthdate in the early 1450s, Vander Straeten found it easy to understand why the young Josquin was at the bottom of the salary scale in 1475, the date of the documents. Soon afterwards, Eugenio Motta provided new evidence to support that identification and stretch Josquin's Milanese career to 1479. Since then the years in Milan have had a fixed and central place in all studies of Josquin's life.

Annona Fonti archivistiche Approvvigionamento Storia dell'alimentazione Milano, secc.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The study represents the life and artistic career of today’s almost forgotten theatre director Milan Svoboda (1883 – 1948). It is based on the extensive Svoboda estate, located in the Theatre Department of the National Museum. It follows the artist from his amateur beginnings in Roudnice nad Labem, through his career as a pedagogue at the Prague Conservatory, theatre director at the Slovak National Theatre, guest director at the National Theatre in Prague, to his post-war effort to create high-quality stage art in the border villages abandoned by the Germans. Thanks to the substantial and rich material found in his estate, the study demonstrates the conflict of creative ideals and the desire to seek an aesthetic beauty in a world within a regimented state, grand political scheming, critics and “progressive” theatrical colleagues.

Abstract (sommario):
The manuscript tradition of the Zaydi branch of Shiʿism, which since the 9th century has been preserved primarily in Yemen, is nowadays dispersed over countless libraries in Yemen and the Middle East, Turkey, Europe, and the United States, of which only a fraction has been digitized and is available for open access. Its treasures came to the attention of scholars outside Yemen at a relatively late stage. Whereas the bulk of Arabic manuscripts nowadays housed in the libraries of Europe were acquired between the 17th and 19th centuries in centrally located cities and regions such as the Ottoman capital Istanbul, Syria and Palestine, and Egypt—all strongholds of Sunnism—the collections of Zaydi/Yemeni manuscripts were established only at the end of the 19th and first decades of the 20th century. Among the European explorers and merchants who collected manuscripts in South Arabia and later sold them to libraries in Europe was Eduard Glaser, who visited Yemen on four occasions between 1882 and 1894. After Glaser sold the manuscripts purchased during his first and second journey to the Königliche Bibliothek zu Berlin in 1884 and 1887, Wilhelm Ahlwardt made them the last acquisition to be included in his Catalogue of Arabic Manuscripts, published between 1887 and 1899. The third Glaser collection was purchased in 1889 by the British Museum in London—with the exception of the Lane collection that was purchased in 1891 and 1893, it was the last acquisition to be included in Charles Rieu's Supplement to the Catalogue of Arabic Manuscripts published in 1894. The fourth Glaser collection was sold in 1894 to the Kaiserlich-Königliche Hofbibliothek in Vienna, constituting the most important acquisition of Arabic manuscripts by the library at the time—unlike the Berlin and London Glaser collections, the Vienna Glaser manuscripts were never described in a published catalogue. An even larger collection of Zaydi/Yemeni manuscripts was brought together by the Italian merchant Giuseppe Caprotti during his sojourn in South Arabia from 1885 to 1919. Portions of the Caprotti collection now belong to the Bavarian State Library in Munich and the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, while the majority of the collection is owned by the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan. European libraries and increasingly US libraries have continuously purchased manuscripts of Yemeni provenance during the 20th and 21st centuries.

Abstract (sommario):
Beethoven’s music has frequently appeared in ballet productions in the 20th and early 21st centuries. However, his only full-scale ballet, Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus (1801), remains outside of the theatrical mainstream. Meanwhile, this work was important for both of its creators: the great choreographer Salvatore Viganò and Beethoven. The ‘Promethean’ line in Beethoven’s and Viganò’s legacy continued after the ballet’s premiere in 1801. A number of Beethoven’s works from 1801–1804 are united by the so-called ‘Promethean theme’ (the quotation or reminiscence from the final counterdance of the ballet). Viganò, not satisfied with the Vienna production of Prometheus of 1801, staged an expanded version of the ballet in Milan in 1813. In that performance, it became possible to accentuate the moments covert in the Vienna version: the striking analogies between the images of Prometheus and Christ. Being a good musician, Vigano used fragments of Beethoven’s other new works, besides Prometheus, in his ballets in Milan. Their artistic quests ran parallel to each other, although Beethoven never turned to the genre of the ballet afterwards. The magnificent orchestral score of Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus has taken on a life of its own. The ballet in its 1801 version was rarely staged during the 19th and the 20th centuries. However, there has been a revival of interest in it in the 21st century. In recent years, a number of stage incarnations of Beethoven’s ballet have appeared, in which the plot has undergone various transformations. Francesca Harper proposed a reading of the work by means of contemporary dance (2005, New York). At the same time, Helena Kazarova staged Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus in an authentic manner in 2016 (Czech Republic, Valtice Castle Theater). Another solution – a very ascetic and symbolist one – was proposed by Attila Egerhazy, who staged the ballet in 2017 by means of the Dance Center of the Prague Conservatory. Finally, in 2021 in Bologna, choreographer Monica Miniucchi created a performance based on Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus bearing very little resemblance to a traditional ballet, performed mainly by means of pantomime. All these endeavors show that Beethoven’s sole ballet is by no means a museum legacy of the past. It has the ability of becoming an organic part of contemporary musical theater.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Background and Aim During the recent COVID-19 pandemic, telemedicine has enabled many IBD patients worldwide to get access to remote assistance. Some positive reports on the use of telemedicine among patients and healthcare providers have been published1-4, but a patient’s trust perspective is not available yet. The aim of our study was to verify IBD patients’ trust in telemedicine. This study was approved by our local Ethics Committee. Material and Methods At our Gastroenterology Unit in Milan (Italy), 123 video-consultations were delivered to IBD patients with mild or moderate disease, in place of follow-up visits scheduled but not provided during the general lockdown (March-April 2020). Video-calling solutions from Google (Hangouts or Meet) or Microsoft Teams were used according to the patient’s preference. The patients’ trust in telemedicine was assessed through an adapted version of the PAtient Trust Assessment Tool (PATAT) questionnaire.5 The primary endpoint was expressed as a >75% percentage of patients giving a score of at least 4 out of 5 in a Likert Scale for three selected key statements: “I can trust video-consultation”, “I can trust that possible problems with the telemedicine service will be solved properly” and “I feel at ease when working with this website”. The questionnaire was formulated through the EUSurvey platform, widely used for clinical research questionnaires in Europe. Results One-hundred-fifteen (93.4%) video-consultations were performed out of the 123 scheduled. Among the 115 consultations, 100 questionnaires were completed (86.9%). The primary endpoint of trust in the telemedicine service was achieved in 95%, 90% and 84% of patients for the three selected key statements about the trust in the telemedicine service, its capability to solve clinical problems and its ease to use. While clinical outcomes were beyond our intentions, we reported no drugs withdrawal in this cohort nor major events. Conclusion Our results showed that during the COVID-19 pandemic most of our IBD patients accepted to receive a video-consultation in spite of the traditional in-person visit and trusted the video-consultation.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper briefly introduces the relevant aspects of the political and ecclesiastical scene in Civil Croatia (Banska Hrvatska) in the mid-1880s. Emphasis is accorded to the socio-political status of Izidor Kršnjavi and his Copernican political turn, reflected in his decision to join the People’s Party in 1884 at a time of rising Hungarian influence. Hungarian dominance was encouraged by Károly KhuenHéderváry, the new ban (royal governor). This in turn led to the strengthening of the Statehood Right Party on the nationalist end of the political spectrum. The roles of Kršnjavi’s former political patron and Đakovo Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer from the Independent People’s Party and Zagreb Archbishop Josip Mihalović are also presented. Using archival materials from Kršnjavi’s Bequest, themes such as the violation of the Croatian territorial parliament’s dignity, the insulted honour of People’s Party member Vaso Pauković and other personal grounds are examined. These may have been the underlying motives which led to the pistol duel between Kršnjavi, a member of the People’s Party, and Statehood Right Party member Milan Pavlović in 1885, after insults were hurled on the floor of Parliament. The course of the parliamentary debate culminating in a verbal altercation between Vaso Pauković and Milan Pavlović is also described in detail. The paper underscores the intersection between politics (People’s Party, Statehood Right Party, Independent People’s Party), the Croatian media (Sloboda, which featured contributions from Statehood Right Party leader Ante Starčević; Pozor and Narodne novine, which backed the People’s Party and Independent People’s Party respectively; and the Church-backed Katolički list) and the Church (Mihalović vs. Strossmayer, and the lower ecclesiastical structures personified by Mijo Smetiško, the director of the Archdiocesan Theological Seminary). To a large extent, and sometimes exclusively, they reflected the previous, politically conditioned a priori premises acted out by the participants in these events. How these premises manifested themselves is demonstrated on the basis of archival materials (from Kršnjavi’s post as lecturer at the Theology Faculty and his later reminiscences on the duel and the associated circumstances) and the official aspect of the penalties stipulated for duels and the time and manner of their enforcement. In the case of Mihalović’s letters to the Apostolic See, they were cast aside and therefore generated no internal canonical disputes at that time. In the case of Croatia’s territory as a whole, they largely reflected the previous political, i.e., partisan, classification of their protagonists and commentators. This clearly stems from what they said (or did not) about the individuals involved in the case and their actions and the necessary official repercussions.
