Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Seasonal two-way migration is an ecological phenomenon observed in a wide range of large-bodied placental mammals, but is conspicuously absent in all modern marsupials. Most extant marsupials are typically smaller in body size in comparison to their migratory placental cousins, possibly limiting their potential to undertake long-distance seasonal migrations. But what about earlier, now-extinct giant marsupial megafauna? Here we present new geochemical analyses which show that the largest of the extinct marsupial herbivores, the enormous wombat-like Diprotodon optatum , undertook seasonal, two-way latitudinal migration in eastern Sahul (Pleistocene Australia–New Guinea). Our data infer that this giant marsupial had the potential to perform round-trip journeys of as much as 200 km annually, which is reminiscent of modern East African mammal migrations. These findings provide, to our knowledge, the first evidence for repetitive seasonal migration in any metatherian (including marsupials), living or extinct, and point to an ecological phenomenon absent from the continent since the Late Pleistocene.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The potential role of platelet-activating factor (PAF)-acether and of IL-5 as an eosinophil-proliferating, activating, and/or recruiting mediator in asthma led us to study the effects of human (h) rIL-5 (hrIL-5) and PAF-acether, alone or combined, on isolated guinea pig eosinophils. Two populations of eosinophils were separated from peritoneal lavages of polymyxin B-treated guinea pigs upon a discontinuous metrizamide gradient: one of low density (between 20 and 22% of metrizamide, purity: 63 +/- 3%, n = 27) and another of normal density (between 22 and 24% of metrizamide, purity: 87 +/- 2%, n = 16). Chemotactic activity was evaluated on a micro-Boyden chamber, results being expressed as the number of migrating eosinophils (mean +/- SEM) at 40 microns through a cellulose nitrate filter (3 microns pore size) in the presence of the agonist or of the solvent alone. hrIL-5 dose-dependently stimulated normodense eosinophil chemotaxis, reaching a peak at 500 ng/ml (98 +/- 21 migrating eosinophils, n = 5, p less than 0.05). These eosinophils also responded to PAF-acether and to LTB4 and not to FMLP, hrTNF alpha, and LPS. Eosinophil preincubation with hrIL-5 increased significantly the migration by PAF-acether (173 +/- 23 migrating eosinophils with PAF-acether 10 nM after preincubation with hrIL-5 500 ng/ml vs 69 +/- 10 after preincubation with buffer alone, p less than 0.01) and failed to enhance migration by LTB4 or to uncover an activity for FMLP. Migration by PAF-acether was antagonized when the cells were preincubated with the antagonists BN 52021 and WEB 2086, which also inhibited migration by hrIL-5. Eosinophils were auto-desensitized by and to PAF-acether or LTB4, but were not cross-desensitized to each other. Eosinophils desensitized to PAF-acether failed to migrate with hrIL-5, but those desensitized to LTB4 responded to hrIL-5 as controls. hrIL-5 failed to induce the elevation of intracellular free calcium concentration and superoxide anion generation from basal values, whereas preincubation of eosinophils with hrIL-5 induced a significant increase in the rise in intracellular free calcium concentration and in superoxide anion generation by 10 nM PAF-acether but not by LTB4. In conclusion, the in vivo eosinophil migration in allergy may involve hrIL-5, particularly associated to PAF-acether.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) can lead to adverse neurodevelopmental sequelae in postnatal life. However, the effects of IUGR on the cerebellum are still to be fully elucidated. A major determinant of growth and development of the cerebellum is proliferation and subsequent migration of cerebellar granule cells. Our objective was to determine whether IUGR, induced by chronic placental insufficiency (CPI) in guinea pigs, results in abnormal cerebellar development due to deficits suggestive of impaired granule cell proliferation and/or migration. CPI was induced by unilateral ligation of the uterine artery at mid-gestation, producing growth-restricted (GR) foetuses at 52 and 60 days of gestation (dg), and neonates at 1 week postnatal age (term approx. 67 dg). Controls were from sham-operated animals. In GR foetuses compared with controls at 52 dg, the external granular layer (EGL) width and internal granular layer (IGL) area were similar. In GR foetuses compared with controls at 60 dg: (a) the EGL width was greater (p < 0.005); (b) the IGL area was smaller (p < 0.005); (c) the density of Ki67-negative (postmitotic) granule cells in the EGL was greater (p < 0.01); (d) the somal area of Purkinje cells was reduced (p < 0.005), and (e) the linear density of Bergmann glia was similar. The EGL width in GR foetuses at 60 dg was comparable to that of 52 dg control and GR foetuses. The pattern of p27-immunoreactivity in the EGL was the inverse of Ki67-immunoreactivity at both foetal ages; there was no difference between control and GR foetuses at either age in the width of p27-immunoreactivity, or in the percentage of the EGL width that it occupied. In the molecular layer of GR neonates compared with controls there was an increase in the areal density of granule cells (p < 0.05) and in the percentage of migrating to total number of granule cells (p < 0.01) at 1 week but not at 60 dg (p > 0.05). Thus, we found no specific evidence that IUGR affects granule cell proliferation, but it alters the normal program of migration to the IGL and, in addition, the development of Purkinje cells. Such alterations will likely affect the development of appropriate circuitry and have implications for cerebellar function.

Abstract (sommario):
The migration to Digital Terrestrial Television or Open Digital Television, with the ISDB-Tb standard, is a transition that involves several changes and heavy investments in the transmission and development of content by television companies and also meansa change for users, since they must also adapt their televisions to have access to the new signal with more audio and video quality. It is necesary to study the regulations, to point out the essential requirements for the different phases of implementation, in joint work with companies and specialized professionals, with international recognized good practices in project management. In Bolivia, Telecommunications Law 164 was amended on August 31, 2017 to provide a conglomerate of resolutions and decrees that promote the digital migration of the different analogue television channels and subsequently a series of provisions were established for operating licensing for 15 more years for each current operator, for free. The channels companies have a new digitalblackout period for the 3 main cities until November 2021 and others with less coverage until November 2025. The guide resulting from this work has already been applied and its contribution to all other channels is expected.

Abstract (sommario):
Based on the examination of 26 499 female and 17 666 male specimens, the reproductive biology of P. ornatus is discussed with spatiotemporal reference to the annual breeding migration from northern Torres Strait to the Gulf of Papua. Migration commences generally in August with ovary development, mating and initial oviposition occurring during migration. Larval release normally commences once the migration has terminated on the reefs of the eastern seaboard in the Gulf of Papua. At the conclusion of the migration, marked segregation of the sexes occurs, with males entering shallow water (< 3 m) before females, who frequent deeper water (3-15 m) until their eggs have hatched. During the breeding season (November- April), females produce up to three broods. Fecundity is determined for 33 females in the carapace size range 75.4-121.0 mm. No significant egg loss during incubation was detected, but there was an indication of a reduction in the size of each subsequent brood. There appears to be a high post-spawning mortality of migratory lobsters. It is likely that the Gulf of Papua is the major source of larval recruitment in the western Coral Sea, including the east coast of Queensland and Torres Strait.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract One of the critical assets directed at agricultural production is labour. In this context, the effects of migration on farm labour among rice farmers in Mamou Prefecture, Guinea Conakry, were assessed. To achieve this goal, 140 respondents were sampled using a multi-stage sampling procedure. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data to present results and test for correlation between ranked variables. Prominent among the push factors responsible for farm labour migration were poverty ( , sd = 0.83), poor healthcare services ( , sd = 0.74) and unemployment sd = 0.61),) while good government policies ( , sd = 0.75) and food security ( , sd = 0.63) were the pull factors. The highest-ranked migration types with effects on farm labour migration were short term ( , sd = 0.45), internal ( , sd = 0.78) and individual ( , sd = 1.45) migration. Farm labour was unavailable (77.1%) in the study area on a cumulative scale. There was an inverse relationship between unemployment (rho = −0.019, p = 0.024), method of land preparation (rho = −0.219, p = 0.009), marital status (rho = −0.178, p = 0.036), family/friends (rho = −0.184, p = 0.030) and farm labour availability, whereas the relationship was direct for the availability of raw materials for production (rho = 0.240, p = 0.004) and farm labour availability. The enacting and sustaining of enabling government policies to improve the livelihoods and the intensifying of agricultural mechanisation are recommended in order to stem migration and sustain farm labour availability.

Abstract (sommario):
We studied the effects of 5-lipoxygenase inhibition with A63162 and cyclooxygenase inhibition with indomethacin (INDO) on 1) eosinophil chemotaxis and 2) airway narrowing caused by 10(-6) M formyl-Met-Leu-Phe (fMLP) in tracheal explants from guinea pigs. Airway narrowing was assessed by calibrated micrometry, and eosinophil migration from the lamina propria was expressed as number of eosinophils contained per 1 cm tracheal segment. After 120 min, treatment with fMLP caused an increase in luminal eosinophils from 6,804 +/- 1,786 to 303,347 +/- 75,609 cells (P < 0.001); airway diameter narrowed by 20.4 +/- 1.4%. In six preparations, A63162 inhibited airway narrowing caused by fMLP by 54.9 +/- 6.1%; INDO had a similar effect on airway diameter. However, maximal inhibition of eosinophil migration was greater after 10(-6) M A63162 (38,393 +/- 7,434 cells; P < 0.001 vs. fMLP alone) than after treatment with 10(-5) M INDO (123,547 +/- 19,499 cells; P < 0.05). We demonstrate a method that permits simultaneous measurements of eosinophil migration and airway smooth muscle contraction in a guinea pig tracheal explant preparation. Our data suggest that eosinophil chemotaxis and changes in internal airway diameter are caused by activation of both 5-lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase pathways and that cell migration is independent of the physical consequences of airway smooth muscle contraction.

Abstract (sommario):
Restoration of the epithelial lining of a damaged airway is a necessary component of airway repair. Tachykinins, including substance P (SP) and neurokinin A (NKA), are localized to sensory nerves within the airway mucosa. These tachykinins regulate several airway functions, but their role in the repair of the epithelium has not been explored. To determine whether tachykinins stimulate migration and proliferation of airway epithelial cells, guinea pig tracheal epithelial (GPTE) and human bronchial epithelial (HBE) cells were grown in primary culture for 4-5 days. Epithelial cell migration was assessed in a blindwell chemotaxis chamber, and proliferation was determined by immunohistochemistry after incorporation of the thymidine analogue 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU). Both GPTE and HBE cells migrated after stimulation with 10(-11) M NKA [23.0 +/- 3.6 vs. 5.4 +/- 1.2 cells per 10 high-power fields (hpf), P < 0.001, n = 8 for GPTE cells; 18.4 +/- 2.3 vs. 3.8 +/- 0.5 cells per 10 hpf for control, P < 0.001, n = 4 for HBE cells]. Migration was stimulated within 2 h, was maximal after 6 h, and was attenuated substantially by the neurokinin 2 (NKA)-receptor antagonist SR-48968. NKA-stimulated migration was both chemokinetic and chemotactic, and it could be blocked by inhibition of protein synthesis with cyclohexamide, inhibition of microtubular function with colchicine, or inhibition of actin microfilament elongation with cytochalasin D.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract (sommario):
Capsaicin, substance P, and ovalbumin, instilled into the bladders of naive and ovalbumin (OVA) sensitized guineapigs caused inflammation, as indicated by increased vascular permeability. Histological changes after exposure to these compounds progressed with time from intense vasodilatation to marginalization of granulocytes followed by interstitial migration of leukocytes. In vitroincubation of guinea-pig bladder tissue with substance P and ovalbumin stimulated release of prostaglandin D2and leukotrienes. In vitroincubation of bladder tissue with capsaicin, OVA, prostaglandin D2, leukotriene C4, histamine, or calcium ionophore A-23587 all stimulated substance P release. These data suggest that bladder inflammation initiated by a variety of stimuli could lead to a cyclic pattern of release of inflammatory mediators and neuropeptides, which could result in amplification and persistence of cystitis after the inciting cause has subsided.

Abstract (sommario):
The renewed interest in diaspora populations in this age of globalization has inevitably led to a re-examination of the Chinese diaspora which, especially in Southeast Asia, has achieved prominence through its association with the ëAsian economic miracle.í This article examines the contemporary transformation of the Papua New Guinea part of this Chinese diaspora from a long settled, homogeneous community into a highly segmented and fragmented sojourner population. Integral to this process has been the intersection of post-colonial nationalism with the emergence of new opportunities for economic development attracting Asian and other international investors. The new sojourner Chinese population differs in significant respects from the sojourner populations associated with much nineteenth and early twentieth century Chinese migration. A particular feature which emerges from the exploration of the variant patterns of Chinese migration and settlement in Papua New Guinea is the need to re-examine the nature of ìChineseî identity and frequent assumptions about the characteristics of Chinese diaspora populations. The Papua New Guinea Chinese case highlights the diversity in the way the Chinese identities related to the concept of a ëhomelandí as well as the very different ways in which segments of the same diaspora group relate to each other and to Chinese elsewhere.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Using an ocean–atmosphere coupled general circulation model, air–sea interaction processes associated with the Atlantic meridional mode are investigated from a new viewpoint of its link with the Guinea Dome in the northern tropical Atlantic. The subsurface thermal oceanic dome develops off Dakar from late spring to late fall owing to wind-induced Ekman upwelling. Its seasonal evolution is due to surface wind variations associated with the northward migration of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ). Since the upwelling cools the mixed layer in the Guinea Dome region during summer, it is very important to reproduce its variability in order to simulate the sea surface temperature (SST) there. During the preconditioning phase of the positive (negative) Atlantic meridional mode, the dome is anomalously weak (strong) and the mixed layer is anomalously deep (shallow) there in late fall. This condition reduces (enhances) the sensitivity of the mixed layer temperature to the climatological atmospheric cooling. As a result, the positive (negative) SST anomaly appears there in early winter. Then, it develops in the following spring through the wind–evaporation–SST (WES) positive feedback associated with the anomalous northward (southward) migration of the ITCZ. This, in turn, leads to the stronger (weaker) Ekman upwelling and colder (warmer) subsurface temperature in the dome region during summer. It plays an important role on the decay of the warm (cold) SST anomaly through entrainment as a negative feedback. Therefore, simulating this interesting air–sea interaction in the Guinea Dome region is critical in improving prediction skill for the Atlantic meridional mode.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract What impact did the Cold War have on building the national armies in Africa? Previous research has focused on Cold War conflict zones, but foreign military assistance had a profound impact on the armies and political systems in countries that did not experience a prolonged conflict. This article focuses on the impact of Cold War competition in Guinea and Mali. The USSR was the main weapons supplier to both countries during the Cold War, which gave it considerable political influence. Based on archival research, memoirs, and online databases, this article shows a similarity in the army's pervasive role in society, arrests and executions of key soldiers and officials, harsh economic conditions, and mass migration to neighboring countries. Similar are also the silences around Malian and Guinean military history. There is, however, a clear need for further study on the political, economic, and military impact of Soviet military assistance.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Fibrinogen synthesis was investigated in guinea pig megakaryocytes. Purified megakaryocytes were incubated with 35S-methionine in methionine-free incubation medium for 18 hours. Newly synthesized fibrinogen in megakaryocyte lysates enriched with purified carrier guinea pig fibrinogen was immunoprecipitated with a specific anti- guinea pig fibrinogen antiserum produced in rabbits. Proteins in the immunoprecipitates were analyzed with a 3.5% to 10.0% gradient polyacrylamide slab gel electrophoresis and auto-radiography. Radioactivity was detected in a protein band of 340,000 daltons. In order to verify fibrinogen synthesis, immunoprecipitate was analyzed by two-dimensional slab gel electrophoresis: (1) the first dimension separated unreduced fibrinogen using a 3.5% to 10.0% gradient gel; (2) following reduction by 2-beta-mercaptoethanol, fibrinogen chains were separated in the second dimension using a 10% gel. Alpha, beta, and gamma fibrinogen chains, which represented carrier guinea pig plasma fibrinogen, were visualized by Coomassie brilliant blue. Autoradiography identified the incorporation of radioactivity into the three fibrinogen chains. In control experiments, immunoprecipitates, produced by exposing megakaryocyte lysates to preimmune rabbit serum and goat anti-rabbit IgG, were also analyzed by the two-dimensional gel system. Radioactivity was not detected in sites corresponding to the migration of fibrinogen subunits. The study demonstrates that isolated guinea pig megakaryocytes can synthesize fibrinogen. The electrophoretic mobility of newly synthesized fibrinogen and subunits is similar to that of guinea pig plasma fibrinogen.

Abstract (sommario):
In total, 58 species of waterbird were recorded on the grassed floodplain of the Middle Fly during surveys in December 1994 and April 1995. The floodplain is an important dry-season habitat both in New Guinea and internationally, with an estimated (+/- s.e.) 587249 +/- 62741 waterbirds in December. Numbers decreased 10-fold between December and April to 54914 +/- 9790: the area was less important during the wet season when it was more deeply inundated. Only magpie geese, comb-crested jacanas and spotted whistling-ducks were recorded breeding on the floodplain. The waterbird community was numerically dominated by fish-eating species, especially in December. Substantial proportions of the populations of many species that occurred on the Middle Fly in December were probably dry-season migrants from Australia, suggesting that migration across Torres Strait is important to the maintenance of waterbird numbers in both New Guinea and Australia.

Abstract (sommario):
Two case studies from the northern margin of the Australian continental plate are presented to illustrate mapping and understanding seepage in an onshore and an offshore area. The first involves an integrated approach to the detection and analysis of onshore seeps in the Aure Thrust Belt of Papua New Guinea. The second study is an application of BP's proprietary Airborne Laser Fluorosensor (ALF) technology to the systematic detection and mapping of offshore oil seepage in the Arafura Sea, northern Australia. In the absence of well or outcrop source rock data, the source risking in the Aure Thrust Belt has been constrained using oil and gas seeps. Mapping the seeps required optimum use of the local peoples' observational prowess. Geochemical analyses of the seeps allowed the identification of an oil-prone source rock of probable Jurassic age. The data reveal that the seeping petroleum liquids are gas condensates in the subsurface, and provide information on the maturation history of the source and the nature of the reservoir/carrier beds, as well as differentiating the biogenic and thermogenic gas components. In this uplifted region, seepage is likely to be from accumulations only.To help reduce the exploration risk in offshore areas such as the Arafura Sea, BP have developed the ALF system which detects oil seepage at the sea surface. It does this by detecting its characteristic fluorescence, which is induced by an aircraft-mounted ultraviolet excimer laser. The ALF data over the western Arafura Sea indicate active oil seepage showing a distribution which is compatible with our current understanding of the subsurface Palaeozoic and Mesozoic source kitchens. The mapped seepage over the Goulburn Graben is most likely derived from the Palaeozoic to (?)Triassic section (with a possible contribution from other Mesozoic sources), and must be migrating through a largely unfaulted Mesozoic seal. Additionally, there is evidence for liquid petroleum seepage from the Mesozoic section in the Calder Graben via faults which cut through the regional seal along the Lynedoch Bank Fault System. In this region of the Arafura Sea, seepage is likely to derive from accumulations, mature source kitchens and secondary migration routes.
