Introduction. Midwifery is one of the world’s oldest professions. Midwives are found in every corner of the world but the scope of their professional expertise may differ in various countries. Although there are numerous documents listing the midwife’s essential competencies, these professionals have to cope with various problems trying to upgrade their skills. A great example of that struggle could be found in Italy. This is one of the countries where midwives keep on fighting for autonomy. Theoretically, an Italian midwife is an independent health care employee, holding a university diploma and a license. In practice, most midwifes work only in hospitals. Italy is a country with the highest rate of caesarean sections in the European Union. In 2013, the rate was 36.3%. The obstetric care is dominated by gynecologists, whilst only some 3% of pregnancies is handled by midwives. This is due to the poor organization of medical care. After all, the role of a midwife is important in making the childbirth more humanized. There are some actual similarities between the professional situation of a nurse in Italy and Poland. They face similar problems when it comes to the implementation of their activities. Aim. The aim of the study was to discuss the position of midwives in Italy, with special attention paid to the legal standards, the education system and the professional independence.

A midwife is an agent of hygiene policy related to the child birth that is the basis of human society. Therefore, studying midwives is to clarify the path of modernization and civilization, and also to investigate the reality of women's employment problems and life in modern era. However, the amount of research on midwives in colonial Korea is still small, and there are still many questions for clarification about the labor of midwives in colonial Korea. The aim of this paper is to analyze the perception of midwives and the reality of midwives's Labor Environment in Gyeongseong. mainly through media materials from the 1920s. Moreover, this paper aims to establish the position of midwives in the female occupation of colonial Joseon. As a result, the following became clear. In the 1920s, the midwife of Gyeongseong was recognized as a considerably high-income profession among the profession of women. In addition, because it was easy for individuals to start a business, it was recognized as a good job for women to become independent. Furthermore, by investigating the midwife's own voices on the media, it was confirmed that they recognized that they had have a good earnings for a woman, but also they complained their income was unstable. And they were dissatisfied with and criticize Korean society because of lack of understanding about necessity of midwifery. From their criticisms, it was confirmed that they were internalizing a hygiene policy strategy based on the Governor-General's theory of civilization and helping to establish a discourse on medicalization of childbirth. Furthermore, the common statement of midwives of Gyeongseong that the Korean society lacked an understanding about them, which suggests that the hygienic idea of using midwives was not widespread in urban areas in the Korean society.

Midwives who are at the forefront of maternal and child health services, must have knowledge, skills and attitudes to be continuous and increasing. One of the innovations that can be applied in antenatal class is pregnancy exercises use of birth ball. Pregnancy exercises use of birth ball is physical exercise therapy for pregnant women use of birth ball as a tool to improve comfort and fitness during pregnancy. Socialization of pregnancy exercises use of birth ball for midwife purpose to increase the knowledge of midwives about the benefits of birth ball and improve the skills of midwifes in providing maternity care to pregnant women so that midwives can teach pregnant women pregnancy exercises use of birth ball . The obvective of this activity is midwives who are directly involved in maternal and child health services and pregnant womenz. The conclusion is socialization of pregnancy exercises use of birth in antenatal class for midwifes is well. Midwifes understand about benefit use of birth ball and can teach pregnant women pregnancy exercises use of birth ball.

Early initiation of breastfeeding (IMD) and so for the baby. Babies breastfed for 1 hour or more on the mother's chest immediately after birth. Implementation of the IMD on maternal need midwives’s role to IMD programs can work as expected. This study aims to determine the relationship of the midwife's role in the implementation of Early Initiation of Breastfeeding (IMD) in the Maternity with Implementatiton Early Initiation of Breastfeeding Program to Maternal in Regional Hospital Pekalongan City. Study used descriptive correlative with cross sectional approach. Samples were midwives in Regional Hospital Pekalongan City as many as 53 peoples. Sampling technique used total sampling. Collecting data used a questionnaire. Results of univariate analysis showed that midwife’s role in the implementation Early Initiation of Breastfeeding (IMD) that 31 (58.3%) was enough and Early Initiation of Breastfeeding (IMD) Program on maternal that 37 (69.8%) was not implemented. Spearman rank correlation test results showed that there was relationship of the midwife’s role to implementation Early Initiation of Breastfeeding (IMD) in the maternity with implementation Early Initiation of Breastfeeding Program to maternal in regional hospital Pekalongan City with ρ value 0.006 <0.05. Correlation spearman rank was 0,374 which means the relationship exactly. For midwives who have sufficient role should increase skill early breastfeeding initiation in the implementation of the IMD and midwife training should undertake delivery care in accordance with the operational standards specified as APN.

The phenomenon of maternal and infant mortality in Banten Province is still high. Based on data released by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Jalin, in Banten Province every week there are an average of 5 mothers and 27 newborns who die the highest deaths are in Pandeglang Regency with 59 cases. and when the public's need for health services increases, especially midwife services, it is not balanced by the expertise and skills of midwives to form a good service work mechanism. So often we also find midwife services not in accordance with their authority. The problems that the author will discuss are related tothe criminal law enforcement of the actions of midwives who are against the law and the authority of independent practice services in Pandeglang Regency and theimplementation of legal policies regarding criminal acts in cases of malpractice in Pandeglang Regency. The method used in this study is a normative juridical descriptive method using a problem approach with the Law by prioritizing primary data and secondary data. The results of this study that midwives who carry out obstetric services are not in accordance with applicable regulations, will be sanctioned in accordance with the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Number. 1464/Menkes/PER/X/2010 on the licensing and administration of midwife practices. Sanctions given to midwives can be in the form of revocation of the midwife's practice license, revocation of Surat Izin Praktek Bidan temporary, or it can also be a fine. In addition, midwives can also be sentenced to prison if they violate the laws and regulations. If a midwife violates the code of ethics, the settlement of this matter is carried out by the midwife professional forum, namely the Midwife Professional Council or the Indonesian Midwife association.Keywords: Law Enforcement, Midwives, and Unlawful Acts

ABSTRACTThe diptheria outbreak in Surabaya indicated that immunization program failure. Immunization is primary preventif effort to decrease morbidity of disease. An immunization service is very important to protect vaccine quality through cold chain so that vaccine potency be optimal. The purpose of this study was to analysis of factors which are assosiated with midwive’s practice of DPT vaccine distribution and storage to outreach. This study is applying observational approach using cross sectional method. Populations are all village midwives in public health center East Surabaya. The numbers of sample were 38 midwives taken using simple random sampling. The dependent variable was midwive’s practice of DPT vaccine distribution and storage to outreach and the independent variables of this study were work duration, a history of training of cold chain, sosialization, knowledge, attitude. Primary data were obtained through observation and interview. The results showed that 68.4 % midwive’s practice on DPT vaccine distribution and storage at outreach is good. Independent variable which are significant assosiated with midwive’s practice on DPT vaccine distribution and storage at outreach is sosialization about vaccine distribution and storage (p = 0.026) and value of phi and Cramer’s V = 0.431. Enhancement of socialization again be needed to village midwive as efforts for increase knowledge and attitude.Keywords: midwive, cold chain, vaccine distribution, DPT

Psychoeducation is an effort to prevent maternal anxiety which should be integrated into maternal health services. Puskesmas (Community Health Center) Sukorejo 1 Kendal in collaboration with Motherhope Indonesia held an online training program and psychoeducation for pregnant women for midwives. However, there are no reports related to the implementation of online training for the midwife to increase their knowledge and skills. The purpose of this study was to determine the implementation of psychoeducation online training for midwives during the COVID-19 pandemic. The method applied qualitative research with a case study approach. The informants in this study were 1 head of the Puskesmas and 5 midwives. Data collection used online interviews (synchronous and asynchronous) and the WhatsApp platform. The interview guide was used as a guide for interviews that were previously conducted by pilot interviews. The data was then analyzed using thematic analysis with the Miles and Huberman framework. It can be concluded that the benefits of training could be felt by midwives, namely improving mental health literacy, enhancing skill, and changing the midwife’s paradigm. So, needed to improve the online training method of midwives about psychoeducation to rise the psychoeducation midwife’s role for a pregnant woman.

Indicator of posyandu work performance in West Aceh was still far below the target determined and there was a decrease during 2011-2012. The results of the preliminary study showed that the motivation of village midwives were still low in posyandu cadre coaching. The aim of this research was to identify the factors associated village midwives motivation in posyandu cadre coaching. The study was conducted quantitavely and qualitatively. The quantitative research used survey method with a cross sectional design. The subjects were 146 village midwives selected by clustered random sampling at public healthcare center level. Data colection was conducted by interviews using structured questionnaire. The bivariate analysis used Chi Square tests, and the multivariate analysis used logistic regression. The qualitative data was collected by in-depth interviews to the village midwives and analyzed by content analysis. The results showed that 64.4% of the respondents had low performance, 54.8% had less responsibility, 62.3% had insufficient potential development, 57.5% felt inadequate compensation, and 52.7% had less supervision. There were associations between responsibility (C= 0.237, p=0.006), potential development (C= 0.268, p=0.001), compensation (C=0.518, p=0.0001), working condition (C=0.237, p=0.006), supervision (C=0.261, p=0.002,) and the village midwife performance in posyandu cadres’s coaching. Compensation had the most significant effect on the village midwive motivation in posyandu cadres coaching (Exp-B=17.383, p=0.0001). The obstacles experienced by the village midwives in posyandu cadres coaching were insufficient fund, unavailable special training for the posyandu cadre coaching and unavailable health facilities. Compensation has the most significant effect on village midwive motivation in posyandu cadres coaching. It is suggested to public healthcare centers and Health office to implement refreshing cadre coaching and improving village midwives performance in by giving appreciation to village midwives who conducted posyandu cadre.

The Program to prevent vitamin A deficiency in Indonesia includes the administration of vitamin A for post partum mothers by giving a high dose ofvitamin A (@ 200,000 international standard). However, midwives sometimes do not evaluate and follow up the program implantation to make sure thatall postpartum women receive the capsule. This study was aimed at evaluating the midwives’ attitude and health promotors’ support and the behavior ofmidwives in giving the vitamin A capsule to post partum mothers in integrated health center (puskesmas) in Klaten regency. This was a cross-sectionalstudy among 37 midwives in puskesmas of Klaten. The data was obtained using a structured questionnaire. Univariate analysis used frequency distributionand bivariate using chi square test. Most of the respondents (75.6%) had a good supports (68%), there was a correlation between the attitude and behaviorof midwife in giving the vit A capsule (p=0.002). There was a correlation between the support of health promoters with the behavior of midwives in givingvitamin A capsule to post partum mothers(p=0.004). There was a correlation between the attitude and the behavior of midwife and support of healthpromotors and the behavior of midwives in giving the vitamin A to mother in Klaten regency.

The purpose of this thesis is to explore how differing circumstances came together to help or hinder the autonomous practice of midwives in Scotland between 1916 and 1983 when the Central Midwives Board (CMB) oversaw their training and practice. The thesis includes an examination of the records of the CMB for Scotland from 1916 to 1983 and, through oral testimonies, the work of practising midwives during the same period. The thesis is divided into two parts. Part I, comprising five chapters, explores the work of the CMB from 1916 to 1983. This includes: an examination of the issues surrounding the 1902 Midwives Act which did not apply to Scotland, and the campaign for, and opposition to, a similar Act for Scotland, passed in 1915; the constitution and early activities of the CMB which the 1915 Midwives (Scotland) Act established to oversee the enrolment, training and practice of midwives; a discussion of the national concern over the Maternal Mortality Rate in the 1920s and 1930s, subsequent Government reports and legislation and the CMB’s responses to these issues; an examination of the CMB’s work during the time of the World War II, the shortage of midwives, and the changes the National Health Service administration made to midwifery in Scotland. Finally, Part I examines the last decades of the CMB’s existence, including its response to changes in midwifery management, education, practice and statute. Part II, comprising three chapters, focuses on the practice of midwives in Scotland during the period through the aspects of antenatal, intranatal and postnatal care. Each chapter uses evidence from oral testimonies of midwives working within the framework established by relevant Acts and the CMB. Part II illuminates the contrast between the work of the CMB and the world of hands-on midwifery practice.

Coyote Midwives is a documentary film about the birth workers who are leading alternative maternity care and reproductive justice in the state of Illinois. This film examines the medicalization of labor and delivery, the patriarchal norms that constitute a threat to a birthing parent’s health, and the structure in place to ensure that birth remains exclusively physician-controlled. Coyote Midwives captures the energy, spirit, and empowering potential of birth, the negotiation and compromise of “professionalizing” midwives, and the networks of criminalized, black market, safe maternity care that persevere despite the illegalities.

The perceptions of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality obstetric unit midwives regarding consulting advanced midwives were researched. Currently South Africa is burdened with an increasing maternal mortality rate despite the control measures that have been put in place. One of those control measures is the skilling of midwives and ensuring that skilled birth attendants assist every woman in confinement. A concern, though, was observed by the researcher that an increasing number of midwives in the country now have an additional qualification in advanced midwifery and yet the maternal and neonatal mortality rates are gradually increasing. The researcher, as a midwife and a midwifery lecturer in that capacity, observed that in the clinical areas midwives prefer to consult with the doctor rather than the advanced midwife. In most cases looking and waiting for the doctor delays the management of the labouring woman as the doctor may not be immediately available. The advanced midwives are supposed to have advanced skills which should be used to assist in the absence of the doctor, particularly in the midwife obstetrics units. The study objectives were firstly, to describe and explore the perceptions of NMM obstetric unit midwives regarding consulting with advanced midwives. Secondly, based on the results of the study, to make recommendations to the managers of the obstetric units within the NMM that will enhance consulting between advanced midwives and midwives in obstetric units. The study was quantitative in nature and utilised an explorative, descriptive and contextual design. Sampling was made possible through simple random probability sampling using the non-replacement approach. The method of data collection was by self-administered questionnaires that were developed by the researcher under the guidance of a qualified and experienced statistician and researcher and the supervision of the research supervisor. Data was collected during July and September of 2014. One hundred and thirty questionnaires were distributed and ninety four were returned. Responses were captured on a spread sheet for easy and accurate calculation and the numerical data was categorized, ordered and manipulated with the help of a statistician using the software package Statistica Version 21 to ensure efficacy of the results The findings were presented by describing the biographic profile of participants, their competence in the identification and management of high risk situations, their consultation with advanced midwives in high risk situations, their reasons for not consulting advanced midwives and a description of factors that might encourage midwives to consult the advanced midwives. Literature controls were utilized to compare findings with current views of other researchers. Trustworthiness was maintained by observing the principles of reliability and validity. The ethical considerations of confidentiality, anonymity and protection of the participants from harm were maintained by the researcher. The findings revealed that there were significant numbers of midwives with many years of clinical experience and years in the units. The age difference of the midwives in the obstetrics units was seen to be an added advantage to the care of women as the young and old could complement each other with the latest information and experience in dealing with midwifery related emergencies respectively. The difference in gender was as expected but did not have an influence on the non-consulting with advanced midwives by the midwives who are working in the obstetrics units. Also, the limited confidence of midwives regarding their performance of certain low risk skills and their confidence in the performance of the advanced midwives was a reason to consult with the advanced midwives in their areas of speciality. Based on these findings, the researcher attended to the second objective and made the necessary recommendations to the managers of the obstetric units within the NMM to enhance consulting with advanced midwives by midwives in obstetric units. Midwives globally would gain information that would assist them in motivating recommendations to the managers of the obstetric units with regard to consulting with advanced midwives by midwives in their obstetric units.

This exploratory, descriptive research used a case study approach to analyse the role of the midwife in providing maternal and infant care in Australia. Midwives from the states of New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia comprised the target population. These midwives were considered to be representative of the general midwifery population practising in the diverse settings of Australia.A triangulation of methods (Denzin, 1970) was used for data collection. This included observational field work, a questionnaire survey of a randomly selected sample of registered midwives (n=1754), and in-depth interviews (n=75), using a grounded theory approach (Glaser and Strauss, 1967; Strauss and Corbin, 1990).The questionnaire, in-depth interviews and observational field work addressed the practice of midwives:1. as documented in policies and procedures in practice settings.2. as defined by the Australian College of Midwives Incorporated in Standards for the Practice of Midwifery (1989), based on the International Confederation of Midwives' Definition of a Midwife (World Health Organisation, 1976).Data obtained through the survey questionnaire were analysed using descriptive analysis (Wilson, 1985) to portray a summarization of the entire data set. A thematic content analysis was used for the open-ended questions of the survey (Burnard, 1991). In an attempt to discover the 'how and why' questions associated with the study's survey findings, the constant comparative method of analysis of data from in-depth interviews was deemed appropriate (Glaser, 1978; Field and Morse, 1985; Chenitz and Swanson, 1986). This allowed a more abstract level of conceptualization that led to the development of a paradigm reflective of the midwives' practice domain (Strauss and Corbin, 1990).Lack of opportunities to practise throughout all stages of pregnancy and childbirth was identified as the major problem limiting the Australian midwives' practice domain. An explanatory process of Optimising Opportunities for Holistic Midwifery Practice emerged explaining midwives' actions and interactions throughout the four stages of optimising: revealing the image; influencing decision making; changing the paradigm; and expanding the profession.The findings of the study provide an analysis of Australian midwifery practice that considers factors facilitating and/or impeding the professional role and development of Australian midwives, and their ability to provide care that meets consumer needs.

This exploratory, descriptive research used a case study approach to analyse the role of the midwife in providing maternal and infant care in Australia. Midwives from the states of New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia comprised the target population. These midwives were considered to be representative of the general midwifery population practising in the diverse settings of Australia.A triangulation of methods (Denzin, 1970) was used for data collection. This included observational field work, a questionnaire survey of a randomly selected sample of registered midwives (n=1754), and in-depth interviews (n=75), using a grounded theory approach (Glaser and Strauss, 1967; Strauss and Corbin, 1990).The questionnaire, in-depth interviews and observational field work addressed the practice of midwives:1. as documented in policies and procedures in practice settings.2. as defined by the Australian College of Midwives Incorporated in Standards for the Practice of Midwifery (1989), based on the International Confederation of Midwives' Definition of a Midwife (World Health Organisation, 1976).Data obtained through the survey questionnaire were analysed using descriptive analysis (Wilson, 1985) to portray a summarization of the entire data set. A thematic content analysis was used for the open-ended questions of the survey (Burnard, 1991). In an attempt to discover the 'how and why' questions associated with the study's survey findings, the constant comparative method of analysis of data from in-depth interviews was deemed appropriate (Glaser, 1978; Field and Morse, 1985; Chenitz and Swanson, 1986). Background An initial review of the literature pertaining to the emotional health of women in their transition to motherhood was undertaken. It became clear that this is an emotional time for women where they are particularly at risk of becoming distressed (Drift 2004) and if women are emotionally distressed at this time it may have long term implications for mother (Drift 2004), baby (Miller et al 1993, Lemaitre-Sillere 1998, McMahon et a1200l) and family (Burke 2003, Tammentie et al 2004a, Tammentie et al 2004b). This understanding led to an exploration of who might provide for the emotional health needs ofwomen at this time. Midwives were identified as key professionals because of their regular contact with women through pregnancy, labour, birth and early childcare. The literature review indicated that midwives were providing for the emotional needs of women but there was no indication of how, despite the recent studies conducted into the emotion work of midwives by Hunter and her colleagues (Hunter 2001,2005,2006, Hunter and Deery 2009). Design This study has been conducted using the Husserlian philo.sophical approach with Giorgi's psychological method (Giorgi 1985). Eight community midwives were recruited following a presentation at their community midwifery team meeting at a local NHS Trust and subsequent 'snowballing'. Unstructured interviews were conducted with them in 2004 in order to explore their experiences ofproviding emotional support to women who were becoming mothers. Findings A general structure was developed along with four constituents: these were 'tipping the balance to showing emotionally supportive care', 'showing emotionally supportive care', 'struggles in showing emotionally supportive care' and 'emotional experiences'. The descriptions of experiences shared by the midwives led to an understanding that emotional support is a special type of care. This occurs in an intimate relationship supported by a 'circle of care'. The midwives use their communication skills with the aim of facilitating comfort and ameliorating emotional distress. To give this care, midwives needed to go through a process of 'tipping the balance' but even after this was enacted, they still struggled in providing this care. They appeared to particularly struggle with maintaining their 'with woman' ideology within their current professional culture. Recommendations There is a need for midwifery to consider how midwives might manage their 'with woman' care within health and social care services. For the midwives in this study, having the autonomy to manage their own diaries and caseloads along with good working relationships with their colleagues was facilitative. This was a small study in one geographical area but it clearly indicates the need for further research in this area.

Mothers around the world experience preventable medical complications during labor and delivery that can lead to maternal and newborn mortality. In addition, some expectant mothers can experience abuse, neglect, and discrimination from attending midwives. This lack of quality care has more connection to maternal mortality than lack of access to health services itself, and it is shown that the most effective way to improve care is through training and continuous education of the midwife, the primary obstetric care-giver. Laerdal Global Health [LGH], was collaborated with in this thesis, a not-for-profit company whose work is dedicated to saving the lives of mothers and newborns in low income regions, through high-impact, low-cost solutions involving educational materials and training programs for midwives. The aim of the partnership with LGH was to support competency development for labor management, with a focus on continuous training and education for midwives in Tanzania, sub Saharan Africa. Continuous training is on-going education of midwives through various methods of training and learning, with the goal of keeping skill sets current and evolving with best practice knowledge. Around the world, as well as in in sub Saharan Africa, medical systems can be stressed by a range of factors, including lack of resources and lack experienced midwives, which leads to challenges to follow standardized obstetric guidelines and an over-burdening workload for the midwife. (LGH, 2019). There is also a high frequency of midwife turnover within clinics and hospitals, making it difficult to train a fluctuating staff of varying competencies and knowledge sets. (LGH, 2019). The net effect of these challenges and beyond, made it imperative to address how midwives could be supported in their efforts to engage in continuous education and training. To facilitate and support continuous education, a hybrid chat and professional education platform, Rio, was created, powered by social interaction, knowledge exchange, and democratization of information. This platform’s aim was to give form and body to existing digital and social behaviors, and midwives’ continuous education efforts, something that comes in many shapes and sizes, and levels of tangibility. A proposal in the digital space was determined to be optimal due to its ability to increase access to information, and its adaptability to user needs and environments. Rio also challenges the ubiquitous nature of WhatsApp in the medical context by addressing and rethinking the generation, use, and storage of patient data. In tandem, Rio maintains the successful social platform use patterns, while utilizing these traits to propel and facilitate professional education and knowledge exchange.

Working midwives actively perform various roles including midwife, manager, mother, marital partner and friend. From the “compensation” perspective, they try to cope with dissatisfaction caused in one role (e.g. midwife role) by obtaining satisfaction in other roles (e.g. mother role). Although the episodes about compensation were useful information for the practical career support, the previous studies didn’t show enough evidence. Hence, this study aimed to collect compensation episodes from Japanese working midwives and to show the descriptive evidence by using Multiple Role Map (MRM) program. The participants were female midwives working in a university hospital in Japan. We conducted the MRM program to all of the midwives working in the hospital and collected eighteen MRM sheets from them (recovery rate = 100%). According to the spreadsheet and descriptive episodes, major contents of compensable dissatisfactions were fatigue, frustration, pressure, distress and job stressors caused in the midwife and manager roles. Meanwhile, these dissatisfactions were compensated by satisfactions received in the friend, marital partner and mother roles and the private time. To obtain more practical findings for the career support, we will develop a statistical scoring method with the MRM data and conduct a validation study comparing the scores and external criterion for standardized health outcomes.

"Professional identity is the concept that describes how we perceive ourselves in our occupational context and how we communicate it to others. Professional identity is not static, but fluid. It is strongly influenced by how we see ourselves, how we perceive others and how we are viewed by society. Professional values are inherent characteristics of every profession and are part of the professional identity. Personal values are a powerful tool that influences our lives. They are the standards that each of us defines in order to live according to them and often influence our attitude and behavior. The profession of nurse/ midwives is defined by the values that each practitioner experiences every day in relation to his profession and each patient with whom he interacts. The professionalism of nursing profession requires that the nurses, midwifes to be able to provide quality health care services adapted to the society healthy needs, no matter age, social position, gender, political and sexual orientation or other differentiation criteria. In this way they will be able to increase the population’s health level. The Order of Nurses and Midwives of Romania implemented POLMED project which objective was to develop a set of fundamental professional values for nurses and midwives, for the benefit of the medical-patient staff relationship. The project aimed at developing an analysis of European public policies on the values of nursing and midwifery, conducting a survey of the current situation in Romania on the values of nursing and midwifery by involvement of 200 nationally selected nurses and midwives, as well as the training of 45 nurses and midwives in the design and evaluation of public policies. As a result, the ability of medical personnel to meet the citizen’s need to have quality health system is directly linked first and foremost to the reform of the educational system of professional training, which internalizes a values system centered on professionalism, empathy towards the patient and cooperation with patients and other categories of professionals in the medical system. The paper work is divide in two parts, the first part presents a survey in order to develop a set of fundamental professional values for nurses and midwives, and the second part presents the way these values were transposed in the nursing education. The paper presents a study on the ways of transposing the professional identity and profession values into the nursing education."

ABSTRACT Background: In 2017, nearly 295,000 women died during and after pregnancy and childbirth. In low-resource situations, the vast majority of maternal death (94%) occurred, and most could have been avoided. This study aimed to analyze the factors associated with the performance of midwives in integrated antenatal care service in Pati, Central Java. Subjects and Method: This was a cross-sectional study carried out at 26 integrated health posts (posbindu) in Pati, Central Java. A sample of 130 midwives randomly was selected for this study. The dependent variable was work performance of midwives. The independent variables at level 1 were age, employment status, workload, working time, leadership perception, and healthcare facility. The independent variable at level 2 was posbindu. The data were collected using questionnaire. The data were analyzed by a multilevel linear regression. Results: Work performance of midwives increased with working time (OR= 0.19; 95% CI= 0.04 to 0.33; p= 0.012) and healthcare facility (OR= 0.26; 95% CI= -0.77 to 1.31; p = 0.610). Work performance of midwives decreased with age (b= -0.07; 95% CI= -0.05 to 0.13; p= 0.100), employment status (b= -0.87; 95% CI= -1.89 to 0.15; p= 0.096), workload (b= -0.22; 95% CI= -0.45 to 0.01; p= 0.058), leadership perception (b= -0.002; 95% CI= -0.08 to 0.07; p= 0.949). Posbindu had strong contextual effect on work performance of midwives with ICC= 8.60%. Conclusion: Work performance of midwives increases with working time and decreases with employment status and workload. The work performance associated with age, healthcare facility, and leadership perception, but it is statistically non-significant. ABSTRACT Background: Fulfilment of nutrition in the first 1000 days of life greatly affects the development of a child’s brain and body. If the nutritional intake is not fulfilled, the impact on children’s development will be permanent, one of which is stunting. This study aimed to compare the quality of antenatal care (ANC) by midwives in the stunting locus and not the stunting locus village. Subjects and Method: This was a comparative analytic with cross-sectional study conducted in stunting locus and not stunting locus village in Malang Regency from August-December 2019. A total of 84 midwives were enrolled in this study by purposive sampling. The data were collected by questionnaire. Data were analyzed using a multiple linear regression. Results: Quality of ANC in stunting locus and not stunting locus village were not showing good results. The most dominant influence on the quality of ANC midwives in the stunting locus was the length of work of the midwives. Meanwhile, the most dominant influence on the quality of ANC midwives in non-stunting locus was the latest education. Conclusion: Quality of ANC in stunting locus and not stunting locus village are not yet showing good results. Introduction: In Slovenia, routine first newborn care includes neonatal eye prophylaxis, vitamin K administration and umbilical cord protection. Vitamin K administration and neonatal eye prophylaxis are legally mandated and compulsory in Slovenia. The aim of the study was to investigate certain aspects of neonatal prophylaxis in Slovenian maternity hospitals. Methods: The descriptive and cavsal-non-experimental method of empirical research used was an online survey based on a questionnaire. The survey was carried out on a purposive sample of midwives working in Slovenian maternity hospitals. It was carried out by third-year students of the Midwifery programme at the Faculty of Health at the University of Ljubljana. The data were analysed on the basis of descriptive statistics with calculations of frequencies and percentages. Results: The results showed that most midwives use potassium hypermanganate (72 %) for prophylactic umbilical protection. Most (40 %) midwives apply vitamin K up to 1 hour after delivery. Most midwives (78 %) use information on the use of prophylactic vitamin K application, including 83 % of midwives knowing at least three benefits of prophylactic eye protection. Discussion and conclusion: The results of the survey showed that the practice of prophylactic protection in Slovenian maternity hospitals is in line with the recommendations of the profession, although it could be further optimised.

The purpose of this study was to analyze factors associated with midwives performance in Mojokerto, East Jva, Indonesia. Subjects and Method: A cross sectional study was carried out in Mojokerto, East Java, Indonesia. A sample of 200 midwives who worked in community health centers was selected randomly. The dependent variable was works performance. The independent variables were age, tenure, employment status, perceived financial compensation, social support, workload, and motivation. The data were collected by a questionnaire and analyzed by a multiple logistic regression run on Stata 13. Results: Work performance in midwives increased with age ≥42 years (OR= 9.2; 95% CI= 1.91 to 44.72; p= 0.006), tenure ≥18 years (OR= 4.5; 95% CI= 1.04 to 19.46; p= 0.044), high perceived financial compensation (OR= 10.65; 95% CI= 2.23 to 50.97; p= 0.003), strong social support (OR= 12.53; 95% CI= 2.59 to 60.70; p= 0.002), low workload (OR= 10.88; 95% CI= 2.41 to 49.12; p= 0.002), and strong motivation (OR= 13.52; 95% CI= 2.64 to 69.21; p= 0.002). Work performance decreased with non civil servants (OR= 0.071; 95% CI= 0.01 to 0.55; p= 0.011). Conclusion: Work performance in midwives increases with age ≥42 years, tenure ≥18 years, high perceived financial compensation, strong social support, low workload, and strong motivation. ABSTRACT Background: Prevention mother to child transmission counseling and testing (PMTCT) service is primarily provided at health facility level. However, their full implementation requires strong linkages with communities. The purpose of this study was to examine contextual effect of community health centers on midwife performance in the implementation of PMTCT? Subjects and Method: This was an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design. The study was conducted at 24 community health centers in Madiun, East Java, from August to September 2019. A sample of 184 midwives was selected by total sampling. The dependent variable was implementation of PMTCT. The independent variables were age, tenure, knowledge, training, work performance, and accreditation. The data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed by a multiple linear regression. Results: Implementation of PMTCT counseling and testing improved with tenure ≥8 years (b= 0.51; 95% CI= 0.15 to 0.87; p= 0.006), good knowledge (b= 0.61; 95% CI= 0.33 to 0.89; p<0.001), had trained (b= 0.41; 95% CI= 0.08 to 0.74; p= 0.014), good work performance (b= 0.56; 95% CI= 0.21 to 0.92; p= 0.002), and good accreditation (b= 0.49; 95% CI= 0.04 to 0.95; p= 0.031). Implementation of PMTCT counseling and testing reduced with midwives age ≥35 years (b= -0.51; 95% CI= -0.80 to -0.21; p= 0.001). Conclusion: Implementation of PMTCT counseling and testing improves with tenure ≥8 years, good knowledge, had trained, good work performance, and good accreditation.
