Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACTChemical and structural characterization of four representative samples of an ore deposit located in the eastern of Hidalgo State was carried out. According with the results, it could be appreciate some areas showing silicified zones with abundant amounts of disseminated pyrites that are part of a rock unit from early Jurassic consisting in inter - bedded black shales and sandstones. Thus, the contents of base metal were greater than 30 ppm Zn and 9 ppm Cu. Chemical analysis of rock gave the following results; 82 ppm of Ba, 1.64 % Wt. Fe, 0.08 % Wt. Ti, 40.8 % Wt. Si, 20 ppm of Ce, 2.2 ppm Co, 30 ppm Cr, 2.7 ppm Cs, 0.9 ppm Er, 2.5 ppm Ga, 1.6 ppm Gd , 1.5 ppm Ge, 9 ppm La, 71 ppm Li, 104 ppm Mn, 10 ppm Nd , 17 ppm Rb, 2 ppm Se, 9 ppm Sr, 10 ppm Ta, 6 ppm Te, 28 ppm V, 9 ppm Y, and 0.7 ppm Yb, among others. Finally, the values found for precious metals, were; Au < 0.02 ppm, Pd <0.05 ppm, Pt <0.05 ppm. It was inferred that the low content of base metals in outcrop studied, are due to the alteration of the black shales. According to these results, we can consider a stratiform – type mineralization of Pb-Zn which could be prospective for SEDEX – Type deposit. By means of XRD, it was possible to identify; pyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and minor amounts of sphalerite and Co -Ni arsenide.

Abstract (sommario):
Prices of oil and other commodities have fluctuated wildly since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is crucial to explore the causes of price fluctuations and understand the source and path of risk contagion to better mitigate systemic risk and maintain economic stability. The paper adopts the method of network topology to examine the path of risk contagion between China’s and foreign commodities, focusing on the dynamic evolution and transmission mechanism of risk contagion during the pandemic. This research found that among China’s commodities, energy, grain, and textiles are net recipients of risk contagion, while chemical products and metals are net risk exporters. Among international commodities, industries have positive risk spillover effects on metals and textiles. During the first phase of the pandemic, China’s commodities were the main exporters of risk contagion. However, international industries and metals became the main risk exporters and exerted risk spillover on China’s commodities in the second phase of the pandemic. Moreover, based on total volatility spillover index of commodities, the risk contagion among the commodities follows three paths: “interest rate → commodities → money supply”, “China’s economic expectation → commodities → foreign economic expectation”, and “commodities → consumer confidence”.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractMining of minerals such as polymetallic nodules from the deep-sea floor has been “on-hold” as a result of several factors such as current availability of Cu, Ni, Co and Mn from terrestrial sources and their fluctuating prices. Nonetheless, exploration for new resources from deep-sea areas and development of technologies for deep-sea mining have been progressing consistently. These, coupled with recent projections of deep-sea minerals as the alternative source for metals and granting of licenses for exploration and mining of seafloor massive sulfides to private entrepreneurs, indicate the continuing interest and support the perception that such deposits may serve as sources of metals in the 21st century. However, there are several considerations for the sustainable development of deep-sea mining.A typical area of 75,000 km2 with an estimated nodule resource of >200 million tonnes is expected to yield about 54 million tonnes of metals (Mn + Ni + Cu + Co), and the gross in-place value of the metals is estimated to be ∼$21‐42 billion (depending upon the annual rate of mining) in the 20-year life span of a mine site. The decision on the timing to resume mining of these deposits will be based on the prevalent metal prices and rate of returns on the estimated investment of $1.95 billion as capital expenditure and $9 billion as operating expenditure for a single deep-sea mining venture. In view of high investment, technological challenges and economic considerations, private-public cooperation could be an effective means to make deep-sea mining a success. This paper analyzes the current status and discusses the economic, technical, technological, and environmental issues that need to be addressed for sustainable development of deep-sea minerals.

Abstract (sommario):
An innovative, efficient, and economically viable process for the recycling of spent alkaline batteries is presented herein. The developed process allows for the selective recovery of Zn and Mn metals present in alkaline batteries. The hydrometallurgical process consists of a physical pre-treatment step for separating out the metal powder containing Zn and Mn, followed by a chemical treatment step for the recovery of these metals. Sulfuric acid was used for the first leaching process to dissolve Zn(II) and Mn(II) into the leachate. After purification, Mn was recovered in the form of MnO2, and Zn in its metal form. Furthermore, during the second sulfuric acid leaching, Na2S2O5 was added for the conversion of Mn(IV) to Mn(II) (soluble in the leachate), allowing Mn to be recovered as MnCO3. Masses of 162 kg of Zn metal and 215 kg of Mn (both in the form of MnO2 and MnCO3) were recovered from one ton of spent alkaline batteries. The direct operating costs (chemicals, labor operation, utilities, energy) and indirect costs (amortization, interest payment) required for a plant treating 8 tons of spent batteries per day was calculated to be $CAD 726 and $CAD 534 per ton, respectively, while the total revenue from the sale of the metals was calculated at $CAD 1359.6 per ton of spent batteries. The development of this type of cost-effective industrial process is necessary for a circular economy, as it contributes to addressing environment- and energy-related issues, and creates opportunities for the economic utilization of metals.

Abstract (sommario):
Lack of intrinsic value, hybrid nature of commodities and recent financialization of commodity markets make of understanding precious metals price moves complicated. Predicting future development of precious metals market can be more feasible if we discover what drives these markets and describe nature of the drivers. The aim of the paper is to explain metal price movements by assessing an impact of multiple economic and financial factors. Based on the literature review we study 8 possible macroeconomic and financial drivers. The data are collected from Bloomberg. We use mixed-data-sampling methodology that enables me to study drivers of various frequencies (daily and monthly) simultaneously in a single model. Results show that the interest rate, the exchange rate, stock levels, stock index returns and crude oil returns are generally significant to drive precious metal markets. The stock index has the most significant impact on the metals returns that is negative. Furthermore, the results divide precious metals into two groups with gold and silver on the one hand and platinum and palladium on the other. The first group is worse explained by considered drivers. Moreover, the interest rate does not have any impact on the price development of gold and silver and crude oil returns influence the pair negatively, contrary to the second pair of platinum and palladium.

Abstract (sommario):
Libya is an important trade partner of Ukraine in North Africa. A priority objective for Ukraine in the cooperation with Libya is to diversify energy supplies, whereas Libya shows interest to imports of Ukrainian goods and science & technology services. Studies of performance and trends in foreign economic relations of Ukraine with Libya are, therefore, supposed to enhance the effectiveness of foreign economic policy decisions. A statistical analysis for the period of 2008–2018 is made using time series on the foreign trade turnover of goods and services between Ukraine and Libya, bilateral trade in goods, bilateral trade in services, the structure of Ukrainian exports of goods to Libya (2018), and the structure of Ukrainian imports of goods from Libya (2018). The data on the structure of the Ukrainian export and import transactions with Libya show that the Ukrainian exports are dominated by agricultural goods, by far and large food products and crops in particular (more than 80% of the total exports), which can caused by nature conditions of the African continent. The remaining share of Ukrainian exports consists of processed raw materials, ferrous metals (nearly 15% of the total exports) and non-ferrous metals, products of oil refinery, chemical products, machinery and equipment, textiles, leather, footwear, foods and beverages etc. The trade balance is positive for Ukraine. Factors hampering the expansion of trade between the two countries are identified: lack of a basic strategy for foreign trade with Libya, lack of a clear strategic vision of the trade cooperation with Libya, heavy political and economic pressures by the Russian Federation, low quality of normative documents for support and promotion of foreign economic interests etc. Management solutions are proposed to improve formation and implementation of the strategy for the development of foreign economic relations between Ukraine and Libya.

Abstract (sommario):
The increase in heavy metal contamination has led to an increase in studies investigating alternative sustainable ways to treat heavy metals. Nanotechnology has been shown to be an environmentally friendly technology for treating heavy metals and other contaminants from contaminated water. However, this technology is not widely used in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) due to high operational costs. The increasing interest in reducing costs by applying nanotechnology in wastewater treatment has resulted in an increase in studies investigating sustainable ways of producing nanoparticles. Certain researchers have suggested that sustainable and cheap raw materials must be used for the production of cheaper nanoparticles. This has led to an increase in studies investigating the production of nanoparticles from plant materials. Additionally, production of nanoparticles through biological methods has also been recognized as a promising, cost-effective method of producing nanoparticles. Some studies have shown that the recycling of nanoparticles can potentially reduce the costs of using freshly produced nanoparticles. This review evaluates the economic impact of these new developments on nanotechnology in wastewater treatment. An in-depth market assessment of nanoparticle application and the economic feasibility of nanoparticle applications in WWTPs is presented. Moreover, the challenges and opportunities of using nanoparticles for heavy metal removal are also discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this paper is empirical analysis of the Austrian theory which points that a monetary shock disturbs relative prices, such as the term structure of interest rates and leads to economic breakdown. Empirical evidence on Austrian Business Cycle is based on some economic crisises from 19th, 20th and 21st century. The paper also points out other than central bank`s monetary policy factors which affect the level of market interest rates.

Abstract (sommario):
Today's monetary policy is a historic one, where the introduction of negative interest rates has started a new "age" of unconventional monetary policy and some argue that there is a need for further unconventional monetary tools. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze negative interest rates, how they came to be, what long-term eect they have on economic stability and if its possible to get out. We do this by analyzing existing theoretical and empirical research, including a theoretical model based on household consumption, a cost of money function and an illustration of the liquidity trap. Thereby the thesis concludes that the short term positive eects of negative interest rate policy get exhausted in the long-term as the negative eects increase over time, thus creating an environment of excessive borrowing both by consumers and governments that might lead to instability and economic downturn in the long-term. Furthermore, the negative interest rate policy is creating a diculty of getting out of the negative interest rate environment because the consumers and the rms have gotten used to the "cheap money" and might have hard time nancing day to day operations in normal interest rate world.

Abstract (sommario):
With increased industrial uses of precious metals, their price has increased considerably over the past decade. It has been suggested that biosorption may be exploited in the remediation of waste-water by removing contaminating entities but more recently the emphasis on exploitation of this phenomenon has been re-directed to the more lucrative sequestration and recovery of precious and semi-precious species, e.g. gold, silver and platinum. Locally sourced biomass materials including distillery yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) obtained from the Old Bushmills Distillery, peat and seaweed (Fucus serratus), were shown to be suitable biosorbent materials and were able to sequester several metals from solution. The distillery yeast was found to work well with equilibrium dialysis, which allowed convenient separation of biomass from the sorbate. A biosorption process using electric fields to assist contact between membrane-enclosed biomass and the relevant sorbate solution was described and termed "Electric FieldMediated Biosorption". In this system, the biomass was enclosed in a dialysismembrane with an electrode, a counter electrode was placed in the sorbate solution and an established potential across the electrodes facilitated electrokinetic movement of the sorbate to the biosorbant material. This system was adapted to increase the contact between the distillery yeast biomass and the sorbate solution by immobilising the biomass in a PV A matrix. This modified-EFMB system better presented the biomass to the sorbate solution forcing ions into contact with the biomass. The PV A allowed better physical handling and this durability increased the life-time of the PV A matrix system, reducing the cost of replacing damaged and fouled dialysis membranes. During the study, the generation of gold nanoparticles was observed and the EFMB system may provide an alternative to the Turkavitch et al. method. The range of metals that the system is capable of actively sequestering demonstrates the functionality, efficiency and application range of the system

Abstract (sommario):
The presence of computational and theoretical chemistry is increasing in chemical research in nearly all fields. Theoretical calculations can help to better explain structure, properties, and reactivity in metallic compounds, in such diverse areas as inorganic, organometallic and bioinorganic chemistry. However, it is essential to use the suitable methodology in order to obtain reliable theoretical results. The studies of this Thesis can be divided into two different groups. The first group includes the theoretical study of the reaction mechanism of several copper-containing systems with different Cun-O2 structures. These studies are carried out with the aim of providing some insight into the nature of the chemical and biological copper-promoted oxidative processes with 1:1 and 2:1 Cu(I)/O2-derived species. In the second part of this Thesis the reliability of different theoretical approaches used to study the electronic structure and reactivity of systems containing copper, iron or other transition metals is evaluated.

Abstract (sommario):
Knowledge of the influence of termites on transport of metals of economic interest within the complex of lithosphere, pedosphere and termite mounds is of great interest for geochemical and geological characterization of anomalies in mining prospection. Termites have an important functional role in the structuring of soils, causing chemical enrichment through the vertical transport of minerals exchanged between the deeper horizons and the termite mounds built at the surface. Our objective in this thesis is to evaluate the influence of termites on Cu and Co biogeochemical cycles in a mineral-rich region (Katanga, DRC), with the aim to optimize the utilization of termite mounds in mining prospection. This objective requires a characterization of mineral and organic phases at various scales. To achieve this, firstly, a geochemical mapping of termite mounds of two dominant genera of the region, Macrotermes and Cubitermes, was carried out at the landscape scale in an area that received a geological and soil and rock geochemical mapping. The utilization of termite mounds allowed the identification of lithogeochemical facies reflecting the subjacent geology on a regional scale according to the feeding habits of each termite genus. The spatial distribution of termite mounds also allowed us to follow Cu and Co content evolution according to study area geology. The combination of mineralogical and geochemical data acquired on Macrotermes falciger termite mounds and morphological and chemical characterization of their main constituents at microscopic scale allowed to identify carrier phases of interest metals in termite mounds materials. Similarly, the comparison of geochemical signatures of M. falciger termite mounds and their parent materials allowed to establish a lithogeochemical relationship, identifying the source of provisioning at depth by M. falciger. Finally, the association of geochemical characterization results of termite mounds for four granulometric fractions (0-20 µm; 20-63 µm; 63-200 µm; 200-2000 µm) and results on evaluation of the impact of termites on the constitution of aggregates in termite mounds and/or soils, allowed to specify the most informative granulometric fractions on the presence and mineralization of carrier phases of interest metals in Katanga in termite mound materials. The application of all these methods and all elements collected allowed us to propose a Cu and Co biogeochemical cycle scheme in this system, underlying the use of termite mounds in effective and efficient mining prospection

Abstract (sommario):
The first paper, "Interest rate pass-through and financial crises: do switching regimes matter? The case of Argentina", analyses the dynamic relationship between a money market (interbank) rate and different short-term lending rates by measuring their passthrough. Neither linear single-equation modelling nor linear multi-equation systems capture efficiently this relationship. Several financial crises alter the speed and degree of response to interbank rate shocks. Hence, a Markov switching VAR model shows the pass-through increases considerably for all market interest rates in a high-volatility scenario. The model identifies correctly the periods in which regime shifts occur, and associates them to financial crises. The second paper, "Modelling interest rate pass-through with endogenous switching regimes in Argentina", extends the scope of the Markov switching modelling by including time-varying transition probabilities. Interest rate spreads are used as leading indicators. The model allows devaluation expectations and country risks, (measured by rate spreads) to signal regime switching. Estimation results suggest that the passthrough tends to overshoot with financial instability, but to decrease if that condition is sufficiently large and long-lived. Likewise, results show a quite heterogeneous credit market, with a highly efficient transmission mechanism in the corporate segment, but considerably less in the consumer segment. The final paper, "Regime switching in interest rate pass-through and dynamic bank modelling with risks", builds a theoretical model of dynamic bank optimisation, which provides rationale to a regime-switching behaviour in the interest rate pass-through. It is shown that a regime-switching interbank rate induces a nonlinear behaviour in lending and deposit rates and (by further introducing interbank-alike regime-switching risk premiums) in the pass-through. Thus, the pass-through process is consistent with a nonlinear behaviour even if there are no asymmetric adjustment costs in the response to interbank rate shocks. An empirical application to France and Germany provide results that support these conclusions.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe use of copper isotopes related to ore deposit location and genesis has greatly expanded over the past twenty years. The isotope values in ores, rocks, soils, and water range greater than 10‰ and provide ample isotopic variation to identify and interpret complex geological process. From an exploration standpoint, the copper isotope values in waters, sulfides and weathered rocks vector to mineralization at depth. Ground and surface waters display the greatest potential for both green and brownfields exploration, whereas Fe-oxides and other related ore minerals isotope compositions for exploration are nascent. From an ore genesis perspective, the copper isotopes serve as a redox proxy to aid in unraveling magmatic and hydrothermal processes related to metal sulfide precipitation. In summary, the use of copper isotopic approaches by the mining industry are ideal as they point to processes directly related to the metal of economic interest and should be employed in all stages of the mine life from exploration to extraction, and to environmental monitoring post-mining activities.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Preventing and mitigating corrosion problems can be very challenging due to technical considerations and prohibitive economic implications. It is thus imperative to arrest the escalating corrosion rates and impede the deterioration effects of corrosion with versatile remedies. In this review, previous research efforts on the application of plant-derived polysaccharides as potential inhibitors of metal corrosion in various aggressive media are studied. The deployment of corrosion inhibitors has proven to be an outstanding solution to prolonging the lifespan of metals. However, the most applied inhibitors such as the inorganic and some organic compounds are prohibitively expensive, hazardous, and toxic. These limiting factors have stimulated interest in more research into greener and less toxic natural alternatives. Considering the success of synthetic polymers for corrosion inhibition, a wide range of plants with high natural polysaccharide content have been evaluated to determine their effectiveness as biodegradable, renewable, and more economical corrosion inhibitors. Studies generally show that natural polysaccharides exhibit over 90% efficiency for corrosion inhibition with appreciable adsorption on the metal surface. Modification and grafting of the plant polysaccharides to enhance their inhibition efficiencies and to make them more desirable are currently being investigated. Such bio-inspired polymeric molecules thus have invaluable significance as potential alternatives for the problematic corrosion inhibitors.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. With regard to environmental protection, the sustainability of production processes is decisive. Mechanical joining technologies like self-piercing riveting are of special importance with regard to realising lightweight constructions in the automotive industry. However, the production of self-piercing rivets is costly, time-consuming and energy-intensive, as the rivets conventionally must be heat treated and coated in order to ensure an adequate strength, ductility and corrosion resistance. Within this paper, it is shown by the example of a newly established rivet manufacturing process how the sustainability of fastener production can be increased. The general approach in this context is the use of alternative, high strain hardening stainless steels as rivet material, which allows the omission of the post treatment of the rivets after forming. The shortening of the process chain enables a more sustainable rivet production. Thus, not only the energy consumption is reduced, but also costs, which is why the novel manufacturing process is also of interest from an economic point of view.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract DC plasma spraying has been widely recognized as a quick and economic way to produce all kinds of coatings (metals, alloys, and ceramics) for a variety of applications. There has been a growing interest in using radio frequency (RF) plasmas. Studies have been reported on characterization of plasma-sprayed coatings by TEM, including thermal barrier coatings, alumina coatings, and Ni-Al coatings. There are, however, no detailed studies reported on microstructural comparisons of coatings prepared by RF and DC plasma spraying. In this paper, XRD, SEM, TEM, polarizing OM, four-point bending fracture, and molten particle impact behavior are used to clarify microstructural differences between the RF- and DC-coatings. The results showed that the microstructures were much different for both cases, especially in the interfacial region between the coatings and the substrates. Paper includes a German-language abstract.

Abstract (sommario):
Regulations all over the world have been pushing vehicle manufacturers to increase fuel economies and decrease green house gas emissions. An effective way to meet these new regulations is to reduce automobile weight through the use of lightweight metals. Magnesium alloys have received recent interest due to its high strength-to-weight ratio. However, conventional fusion joining methods such as resistance spot welding are not effective for magnesium alloys. As such, an attractive joining technique for these lightweight metals is self-pierce riveting (SPR) which is fast, fumeless and does not melt the material. However, SPR must be performed at elevated temperatures because of the low ductility of magnesium alloys at room temperature. Even though the SPR joining process has been established on magnesium alloys, this joining process is not optimized. As such, this study establishes the first attempt at simulating the SPR of magnesium alloys through the use of the finite element method. An internal state variable (ISV) plasticity and damage material model was employed and comparison to experimental results show good results. The results of this study show that the ISV material model is ideally suited for modeling the SPR in magnesium alloys.

Abstract (sommario):
Nuclear energy is playing an important role in electricity generation, producing 16% of the world’s electricity. However, most of the world’s energy consumption is in the form of heat, in which case nuclear energy could also play an important role. In particular, process heat for seawater desalination using nuclear energy has been of growing interest to some Member States of the International Atomic Energy Agency over the past two decades. This growing interest stems from increasingly acute freshwater shortages in many arid and semi-arid zones around the world. Indeed, several national and international nuclear desalination demonstration programs are already under way or being planned. Of particular interest are projects for seawater nuclear desalination plants in coastal regions, where saline feed water can serve the dual purpose of cooling water for the nuclear reactor and as feed water for the desalination plant. In principle any nuclear reactor can provide energy (low-grade heat and/or electricity), as required by desalination processes. However, there are some additional requirements to be met under specific conditions in order to introduce nuclear desalination. Technical issues include meeting more stringent safety requirements (nuclear reactors themselves and nuclear-desalination integrated complexes in particular), and performance improvement of the integrated systems. Economic competitiveness is another important factor to be considered for a broader deployment of nuclear desalination. For technical robustness and economic competitiveness a number of design variants of coupling configurations of nuclear desalination integrated plant concepts are being evaluated. This paper identifies and discusses various factors, which support the attractiveness of nuclear desalination. It further summarizes some of the key approaches recommended for nuclear desalination complex design and gives an overview of various design concepts of nuclear desalination plants, which are experienced, being implemented or evaluated by several IAEA Member States. Operating experience with nuclear desalination using a liquid-metal reactor BN-350 in Kazakhstan and several Pressurized Water Reactor units in Japan is discussed. Results of economic analyses of nuclear desalination are also presented in order to illustrate the competitiveness of this technology with other conventional desalination operations.

Abstract (sommario):
Global efforts to achieve the climate goals specified in the Paris Agreement pose major challenges for the global production system, because demand for clean fuels, metals, and minerals will increase considerably in the coming decades. This trend is the main driver for extractive companies transformations of their production systems to maintain their profitability and operability in the face of an increasingly stringent context in economic, environmental, and social terms. Hence, the adoption of digital technologies appears as a unique opportunity that would enable the industry to meet the challenges posed by the energy transition that is looming. In this challenging context, companies in the extractive sector have started to rethink not only their internal operations, but also the ways in which they interact with communities, the environment, and public opinion.

Abstract (sommario):
A growing number of countries are committed toreduce their carbon emissions and are transitioning towards renewable and clean energy sources, leading to an in crease in demand formetals and minerals. This is especially the case for a short list of what are called "critical minerals" which are considered essential to economic development, including the transition to a low-carbon economy and national security. There liability of their supply chain raises concerns considering geological scarcity, difficulty to extract and/or political factors influencing their availability. At the same time, public awareness and perception of geoscience are eroding and there is more and more reluctance towards mining projects, even from traditionally favourable communities. To face this challenge, promote public interest and outline the contribution of geological science to society, geoscientists of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC-Québec) have designed and put together a portable display that includes a suite of mineral and metal samples considered critical for the sustainable success of Canada's transition towards a clean and digital economy. The display is a user-friendly toolkit that can be used by any GSC geoscientists during outreach activities, in classrooms as well as during public open houses. It comes with straightforward pedagogic material and content, along with presentation scenarios. To broaden and adapt the workshops to specific expectations, additional toolkits were developed and all are contained within easy to carry travel cases. These cover a variety of topics and can be presented as stand-alone displays or be used complementary to one another. For example, the "Mines and minerals" collection may serve as a supplement to the "Critical minerals" display to present every day objects in which minerals are used as well as ores amples from active mines to illustrate the intertwining between mining activities and our everyday lives. Another display covers the ever-popular fossils thematic with the "Sedimentary rocks and fossils" collection and gives an opportunity to address key geoscience themes such as life evolution and biological crisis along with groundwater reservoirs and resources. The "Magmatic rocks" display touches on the formation of rocks from magmas, the different types and active processes of volcanoes, and discusses the risks and benefits related to volcanic activity. Hopefully, these four ready-to-use portable displays will encourage more GSC geoscientists to engage in public oriented activities to make geosciences more accessible, change perceptions and offer an overall tangible scientific experience for people.
