Testo completoThe purpose of this thesis is to propose ultrasonic signal processing methods in order to improve the transitory flow velocity non-intrusive detection through pipes, in complex measurement conditions. By complex measurement conditions, we refer to high or very low flow rates and also to transitory or turbulent flows. Usually, the flow velocity can be non-intrusive estimated, using ultrasonic flow meters based on transit time estimation. Conventional transit time flowmeters are based on the alternating emission of single-frequency acoustic pulses (ie, narrow-band acoustic pulses) and the calculation of the absolute difference between flight times in the direction of flow (direct) and in the opposite direction (reverse). The fluid velocity (and the flow rate), or rather the precision of estimation of these quantities, rest mainly on the estimation of this difference. The sensitive part of this technique is the choice of the threshold (assuming that the received signal is not affected by other phenomena such as echoes, excessive attenuation or Doppler effects) determined mainly empirically: above 50% or 80% of the maximum expected value of the signal. Techniques for reducing measurement errors are quite conceivable and provide acceptable accuracy under almost ideal measurement conditions. However, apart from the case with idealized measurement conditions, there are several scenarios where current techniques are deficient: sensor misalignment, excessive flow velocity which leads to the “flow blow” effect, two-phase flow and / or the presence of the Doppler effect. These facts, presented in the second chapter of the manuscript, led us to consider, within the framework of this thesis, research axes whose common objective are to provide the signal processing tools capable of lifting the operational locks. Thus, the signal processing principles considered to meet this objective are: the principle of wide-band signals which gives the signal processing system a finer resolution and better robustness to disturbances; the concept of compressing sensing in order to reconstruct the missing samples due to interference at the reception point; the principle of beamforming and the principle of multi-paths which makes it possible to evaluate the velocity profile in a pipe section

Testo completoThe recent progresses of the digital high speed cameras allows us to analyze very fast phenomena, such as cracks propagations, vibrations or impacts loading. These cameras give us a single frame of each time of experimental process. Optical methods in mechanics are widely used by researchers and engineers. The values of the quantities we are looking for are contained in the demodulated phase of the fringe pattern. Usually, in static, the phase extraction is performed by a phase shifting technique using several fringe patterns. But, this approach is unavailable for studies in dynamics. In this case, we have access to only one image for a given mechanical state. So we must extract the information from a single fringes pattern. We present two techniques of phase demodulation from a single real fringe pattern using the correlation technique. The behavior and the performances of both algorithms are presented with the help of examples

Testo completoIn the sea, the acoustic detection of other battle engines is done by detecting mostly stationary signals. However, new types of detection systems are being developed, and are able to detect and to analyze transient signals. Therefore, the industrial conception process needs to be improved, so that the underwater vehicles transient noises can be taken in account. In order to do so, the mechanism of vibroacoustic transfer of transient sources of submerged structures has to be understood. The object of this thesis is then the study of the mechanism of vibration transfer and acoustic radiation of those structures when they are excited by transient sources. The shell radiation in the water, the wave diffraction by circumferential stiffeners and the resonant behavior of internal substructures are analyzed. The first chapter presents the bibliographical study of three themes: the study of transient phenomenon of submerged structures, the influence of heavy fluid coupling on vibroacoustic behavior of plates, and the different calculation methods in transient vibroacoustics. In the second chapter, we study the transient response of a submerged infinite plate excited by an impulsively point force. First, the calculations are done in the wavenumber-frequency domain. Then the spatio-temporal responses are obtained using inverse Fourier transforms. The discretization of wavenumber and frequency domains and the damping model are studied. The analysis of frequency and time responses of the plate vibration and the radiated pressure enable us to observe the influence of heavy fluid coupling. Besides the Mindlin-Timoshenko plate model is also used and the effect of rotation inertia and shear stress are studied. In the third chapter, these numerical results are confronted to experimental data, obtained experimentally. The studied structure is a rectangular plate lying on the surface of a water tank. Two different excitations are used: an impact hammer and the free fall of a steel ball. The study of the correlation between numerical and experimental results showed that some phenomena are observed in both cases. The influence of stiffeners on the acoustic radiation is the theme of the fourth chapter. An infinite plate which is periodically stiffened through one direction is considered. The effect of Bloch-Floquet waves on time response is studied. Numerical results are compared to measurements data obtained on an industrial submerged structure. In the fifth chapter, the effect of internal structures is analyzed by modelling an infinite plate coupled to a resonant system made of a beam and a rectangular finite plate. The inertance coupling method is used to obtain the coupling forces between the different substructures. Influence of inertance difference between the substructures is illustrated by the time signals

Testo completoObservations of atmospheric and ocean surface dynamics can be performed via radar remote sensing. The usual approach consists, in both cases, in numerically calculating the Doppler spectrum of the received temporal echoes using a discrete Fourier transform. Although satisfactory for most applications, this method is not suitable for observations of transient phenomena due to being shorter than the integration time required for radar observations. We use an alternative technique based on an autoregressive representation of the radar time series combined with the maximum entropy method. This approach is applied to coastal radar measurements of surface currents in the high frequency band as well as to L-band radar measurements of wind in the lower atmosphere. For both cases, through numerical simulations and case studies, we compare our approach with others that use different instruments. We show that for short integration times, where conventional methods fail, our proposed approach leads to reliable estimates of geophysical quantities (ocean currents and wind speeds)

Testo completoIn accordance with the commitment made by the conservative party, the Leave victory in the referendum on the United Kingdom's membership of the European Union triggered the procedure set out in Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union. Above all, the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union raised the question of the future relationship between the two entities. The prominence given to free movement of people during the referendum campaign prompted London to consider the various scenarios in the light of the possibilities offered in terms of controlling movements from Member States. They came down to an alternative: either to adapt free movement of people or to dismantle it. The first option did not fit well with the quest for sovereignty expressed during the campaign. Through the implementation of the second, the British government intended to demonstrate its ability to draw the consequences of withdrawal within the constrained timetable of the exit and to normalise relations with the European Union by bringing the treatment of EU citizens and their family members into line with the ordinary law on foreign nationals. In the absence of acquired rights, this undertaking required a transitional regime to be put in place to enable people who had exercised their right to free movement and whose situation was ongoing to continue to benefit from it.In the United Kingdom, alignment with ordinary law was not achieved without adaptations. It first led to a liberalisation of the immigration system, the main aim of which was to protect the dynamic and flexible labour market from deficiencies that could destabilise it. However, the consecutive increase in immigration from non-EU countries resulted in further restrictions of the conditions that the entry and residence of EU citizens and their family members has been subject to. The logic of reciprocity behind this alignment has led to a twofold phenomenon : loss of rights and redistribution of prospects for cross-mobility between, on the one hand, the European Union and its Member States and, on the other, the United Kingdom. Despite the ambition pursued, alignment has nevertheless remained incomplete. Pragmatism called for a preferential treatment in certain respects, which reflects a desire to preserve an essentially commercial relationship. The case of Ireland, where the United Kingdom has consistently reaffirmed its attachment to the Common Travel Area, is a noteworthy exception

Testo completoCO2 emissions in internal combustion engines are linked with inefficiencies due to wall heat losses during combustion. Those losses exhibit a sharp peak of a few MW/m2 close to top dead center and are linked to complex flame/wall interaction phenomena that vary with the combustion mode. A fine understanding of the associated phenomena requires experimental characterization of wall heat flux with a time resolution better than the millisecond. In this PhD work, a rapid compression machine and a precombustion cell are used to reproduce engine combustion phenomena. Thin-junction thermocouples allow an instantaneous measurement of the wall heat flux with a time resolution of 0.1 ms. Three combustion modes are generated: propagation flame, diffusion flame and auto-ignition.Different possible measurement technologies and procedures (thermocouples, thermoresistances and rapid phosphor thermometry) are compared and benchmarked against the features of combustion phenomena. Flux during wall heat transfer reaches values of a few MW/m2 and its shape varies with the combustion mode. During premixed flame propagation, flux is dominated by a peak during flame-wall interaction of about 5 MW/m2 in amplitude and 0.5 ms in duration. During Diesel combustion, heat flux is approximately constant during the injection duration; itsevolution is driven by an increase of the convection coefficient up to 10 kW/m2/K, which is attributed to air entrainment by the spray; the temperature increase from combustion is considered a second-order effect. During combustion presenting a pressure wave propagation (e.g. knock for some spark-ignition cases or HCCI with high energy content), the intensity of pressure oscillations and wall heat flux are shown to be correlated. That correlation is independent of the phenomenon creating the pressure wave; heat flux during knock is 3-5 times higher than for a comparable premixed propagation flame

Testo completoThe general objective of this work is to develop a deep understanding of the interaction of the CO with anodic catalysts in PEM Fuel Cells (PEMFCs), and to evaluate its impact on the reactivity towards the hydrogen oxidation and their stability. Firstly, a multiscale kinetic model is built up based on Monte Carlo simulation and kinetic modelling of elementary electrochemical/chemical steps as a tool to simulate the performance of PEMFCs fed with H2 containing CO traces. Experiments on CO adsorption and oxidation mimicking O2 bleeding were used to better understand the mechanisms. Monometallic Pt and bimetallic PtxCoy and PtRu catalysts supported on high surface area carbon were studied. CO adsorption and oxidation were investigated by means of DRIFT spectroscopy and QMS analysis. Defect sites (kink, edge), history of interaction with different gases (H2, O2, CO), temperature, Pt loading, particle size, alloying with Co or Ru are key parameters influencing the CO reactivity with O2. The multiscale kinetic model was applied to Pt and PtxCoy. PtxCoy nanocatalysts are shown to be highly CO tolerant but might degrade by Co dissolution in long term operation, depending on the Pt to Co ratio

Testo completoHeat pumps are a key system for reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in buildings. Their performances depend on many factors that cannot always be predicted, therefore in-situ measurement is necessary to know the real performances of each equipment. A previously developed method is presented and validated. It is able to measure accurately the heating power in steady-state for superheated vapour compression. However, it is not functional for transitory state and for two-phase suction. Thus, complementary methods are studied and evaluated to extend the performance measurement to these cases. A complete method is then suggested, allowing a better consideration of wet compression cycles and transitory operation in seasonal performance assessment

Testo completoMass diffusivity is one of the physical properties that characterizes the migration of bound moisture in porous media in general and in wood in particular. Its control is essential to understand and to simulate the drying process as well as impregnation phenomena or moisture transfers through building walls. In this study, a fast and reliable method for the determination of mass diffusivity by electrical measurements in transient state has been developed. This method consists in three complementary steps: experimentation, analysis of experimental data thanks to a coupled heat and mass transfer numerical code (TransPore) and minimization of the difference between the experimental data and the simulated ones. The experimentation is based on measurements of the electrical resistance of wood sample in transient state. A megohmmeter associated to a multiplexer allows measurements on several samples at the same time. The code TransPore computes the electrical resistance of each sample thanks to the moisture content field. That has been simulated from the real experimental conditions. The Simplex algorithm minimizes the gap between experimental and theoretical results by fitting the significant parameters such as mass diffusivity. The method ability was established by comparison with the very widely used weighting technique for mass diffusivity determination. The efficiency of this new method allows us to characterize the wood diffusivity of six tropical species and six temperate ones. However, the weighting technique has been preferred to characterize the mass diffusivity of heat treated wood and shows that the mass diffusion coefficient of natural wood was reduced by at least

Testo completoThis document presents the development of a new method for the high electromagnetic field measurement, called MICHELSON method. This study was supported by the French armament agency (DGA). This method is based on a simple equipment which is composed of a passive target and a classical receiving antenna. The target is illuminated by the field to measure and diffracts it in different directions, the receiving antenna measures the diffracted field in a given location; the purpose is to get the incident field from the receiving antenna output voltage. The fact to move the measurement permits to recover only a fraction of the incident field, permits to measure high fields from a low level instrumentation. Collaborations with the Centre d’Etudes de Gramat (CEG) and with the Laboratory of Electrical Engineering (LGE) of Pau have been led to validate the method on narrow band and wide band high power microwave sources. These high level experimentations have permitted to establish the performances of the MICHELSON method, which have been compared to those of the specific existing sensors

In the particular case ofgas shales, these three essential properties are extremely difficult to measure precisely, because of the complexicity of these rocks. The numerous weaknesses of the Pulse Decay method are here presented,as the strengths of the new method derived from the improvement of the Pulse Decaymethod, namely the Step Decay method, developed in I2M laboratory and patentedin partnership with TOTAL. More exactly, the performances of the Step Decaymethod are here studied numerically as well as experimentally, in homogeneouscondition, as in heterogeneous condition. Testo completoThe main objective of the thesis is to study the thermal effects in steadily loaded circumferential groove journal bearings (CGJBs), including cavitation phenomena occurring in the divergent zone of such bearings. Experimental research conducted at University of Poitiers – Institut Pprime – France enabled a thorough determination of film pressure and temperature fields for the front land of a CGJB plus its mid-groove section, and several performance parameters. Measurements of film pressure and temperature fields under steady-state regime surpassed existing works, regardless of journal bearing design, through: sheer number of land measurement locations, 180 for pressure and for 144 temperature; high precision state of art instrumentation; broad range of operating conditions, 0.125 … 2 MPa specific bearing pressure and 5.25 … 21 m/s shaft speeds. Transient start-up to steady-statestabilization regimes have been investigated at low loads. Experiments at University "Politehnica" of Bucharest – Romania showed a correlation between the downforce thrust and film rupture for a Rayleigh step pin (RSP), important in evaluating divergent zone cavitation phenomena. Theoretical research consisted in developing simple models for evaluating CGJBs performance in steady-state and transient start-up regimes. Several theoretical models were employed for assessing start-up seizure, catastrophic transient thermoelastic instability and damage risk. The major result is a reliable experimental data collection that: enables development of advanced theoretical models; disprove flat film pressure distributions in divergent zones, and constant pressure and temperature in the bearing supply groov

Testo completoMore and more sensitive data are stored inside smart cards, like bank account or car access codes. Recently, these security circuits have become a target for hackers who try to abuse these data. To achieve this goal, these attackers use the state of the art technologies like fault injection. To comply with the smart card market requirements, designers have to build protections against these attacks while keeping design costs as low as possible. These constraints should lead to a cost-efficient design and benefit from dedicated automatic protection methodologies. In this thesis we first study radiation sources able to tamper with silicon circuit behavior, and then we reveal similarities between laser attacks and radiation effects on a circuit. Then we show the specificities of secure circuit design and the spectrum of attacks used by hackers. The third part characterizes Single Event Transients (SET). A design methodology is proposed and implemented in two circuits, one dedicated to measuring laser-induced SET duration in logic gates, the other dedicated to measuring gate sensitivity to neutrons. This work concludes the review of results obtained after a laser shooting experiment campaign

Testo completoIn a nuclear reactor, the fuel is in the form of cylindrical pellets, surrounded by the cladding. During irradiation, the pellets expand, the diameter of the cladding decreases under coolant pressure, and the two objects mechanically interact. During an incident, the power change causes the fuel to expand further, increasing the stresses in the cladding. Safety requires that the integrity of the cladding (first containment barrier) and the absence of core melting are ensured. To better understand the physical phenomena related to PCI under these transient conditions, specific experiments are carried out in dedicated research reactors. Today, the majority of measurements are performed before and after the experiment, giving only the initial and final state of the system and thus limiting the amount of available information. The work of this thesis focuses on the development of a measurement method dedicated to the on-line characterization of the PCI kinetics as well as to the detection of the onset of central fuel melting. In this thesis, we identify with the ALCYONE code the parameters to be measured to characterize these two phenomena and develop a numerical model to study the effect of core melting onset. An experimental study, IMPIGRITIA, is carried out to state on the feasibility to detect the origin and evolution of the contact between the pellets and the cladding by means of fuel element vibrations. Finally, we recommend the most suitable technical solutions available and under development for the ADELINE irradiation device of the Jules Horowitz Reactor

Testo completoThe reliability of the microcontrollers is crucial considering their massive use in numerous domains, especially in severe environments. Therefore, the robustness in the electromagnetic disturbances, in particular for the power supply network, is a major development, whether it is to acquire a comparative advantage on the market, or simply to assure the goods and people safety. Therefore, we studied the Fast Transient Burst test of integrated circuits, as defined by the IEC 61000-4-4 standard. The specific propagation mechanisms of the disturbance in common mode are highlighted, as well as their conversion in differential mode. Several measurements methods, among which certain novel, were developed to validate this conversion, as well as the propagation modes. Based on this, the power distribution network was particularly studied and its influence on the robustness of the circuit was highlighted. Finally, this work opens new perspectives of improvement of the microcontrollers’ robustness, for this kind of aggression, and thus their reliability

Testo completoThe related field to this work is called “energy disaggregation" where the main concern is to break down, or disaggregate, the global electrical energy consumption (e.g. wholehouse consumption) into a detailed consumption given as end-use (e.g. appliance-level) consumption information. This latter gives consumption feedback to consumers and electricity providers and is helpful for energy savings. Three main questions have to be answered in the energy disaggregation field : who is consuming ? when ? and how much ? The research conducted in this thesis focuses on electrical appliances identification, i.e. the who question, considering particularly home appliances. For this purpose, we use the turn-on transient current signal which we model using a new model we proposed and use its estimated model parameters for the identification task
