Preston, John Christopher. "Future past memories : a sculptural study of memorial". Virtual Press, 2000. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1178346.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The objective of this creative project was to see if inspiration from historical and literal references could be integrated with an expressionistic approach to sculpture in the form of a memorial. This study involved creating a series of electroformed models or maquettes (seven final pieces) that examined this three-dimensional dilemma based on the concept of building a larger memorial sculpture for an abandoned cemetery near Oxford, Ohio, where my ancestors are buried (there are no monuments left in this wooded location). The cemetery, called the Freeman Cemetery, is named in honor of my Great Great Great Grandfather John Freeman, a Revolutionary War Soldier, who is buried there. This site was of particular concern as it is threatened to be disturbed and possibly built on as part of a nearby expanding housing development (it may not be protected by Ohio law). This study included looking at the site, the natural flora and fauna of the Midwest, the historical precedence in memorials, and the utilization of background in architecture to help generate the forms. It also involved learning the techniques of electroforming, sculptural construction and fabrication, and patina processes.

Liu, Yu. "TIME-PREDICTABLE FAST MEMORIES: CACHES VS. SCRATCHPAD MEMORIES". OpenSIUC, 2011. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/390.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In modern processor architectures, caches are widely used to shorten the gap between the processor speed and memory access time. However, caches are time unpredictable, especially the shared L2 cache used by different cores on multicore processors. Thus, it can significantly increase the complexity of worst-case execution time (WCET) analysis, which is crucial for real-time systems. This dissertation designs several time-predictable scratchpad memory (SPM) based architectures for both VLIW (Very Long InstructionWord) based single-core and multicore processors. First, this dissertation proposes a time predictable two-level SPM based architecture for VLIW based single-core processors, and an ILP (Integer Linear Programming) based static memory objects allocation algorithm is extended to support the multi-level SPMs without harming the time predictability of SPMs. Second, several SPM based architectures for VLIW based multicore processors are designed. To support these architectures, the dynamic memory objects allocation based partition, the static memory objects allocation based partition and the static memory objects allocation based priority L2 SPM strategy are proposed, which retain the characteristic of time predictability. Also, both the WCET and worst-case energy consumption (WCEC) of our SPM based single-core and multicore architectures are completely evaluated in this dissertation. Last, to exploit the load/store latencies that are statically known in this architecture, we study a SPM-aware scheduling method to improve the performance. Our experimental results indicate the strengths and weaknesses of each proposed architecture and allocation method, which offers interesting memory design options to enable real-time computing. The strength of the two-level architecture is its superior performance compared to the one-level architecture, while the strength of the one-level architecture is its simple implementation. Also, the two-level architecture with separated L1 SPM for each core better fits for the data-intensive real-time applications, which not only retains good performance but also achieves a higher bandwidth by accessing both instruction and data SPM at the same time. Compared to the static based strategies, the dynamic allocation based partition L2 SPM strategy offers the better performance on each core because of the reuse of SPM space at the run-time, but has much higher complexity. In addition, the experimental results show that the timing and energy performance of our proposed SPM based architectures are superior to the similar cache based and hybrid architectures. Meanwhile, our architectures can ensure time predictability which is desirable for the real-time systems.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis seeks to examine the concept of the corroded memory, an idea that has driven the development of a large body of original creative work which includes performances, compact disk recordings, audio walks and video installations. I have completed this work during the last four years of part time study as a Master of Arts - Research student, enrolled at the University of Wollongong, Faculty of Creative Arts.In this thesis I examine, analyse and provide a context for a variety of publicly presented sound andvideo works. The conceptual framework and intent, together with the compositional techniques employed in each work are documented along with a self-evaluation of the various failures and successes of these works. Where necessary I will allude to references of work and ideas by other artists, composers and musicians who have influenced my work. This thesis was written to clarify ideas that are central to my folio of creative and curatorial work. My folio can be found on companion music CDs and DVDs. The text of the thesis which includes five appendices with a more detailed description of each work will have most significance for those readers who refer to the documented performances supplied on recorded media.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is intended to analyse a mental phenomenon widely neglected in current philosophical discussions: personal memories. Although the analysis is philosophical, the methodological approach is interdisciplinary in order to integrate empirical research done in cognitive science. The first part presents a general framework to better understand what personal memories are, how we access our personal past and what we access about our personal past. Chapter 1 introduces traditional theories of memory: direct realism and representationalism in their differen versions, as well as some objections. I defend here a particular form of representationalism that is based on the distinction between content, intentional object and ontological object. Chapter 2 explores the possible contents of our personal memories, which prove to be heterogenous, even embodied and external, whereas chapter 3 analyses their possible intentional objects, with a special focus on past events. The second part of the thesis explores an aspect of our personal memories that was omitted in the first part: the senses in which our personal past is apprehended as personal. Chapter 4 examines the way in which the "self" intervenes in the construction of our personal memories anc determines their content. Chapters 5 and 6 focus on the analysis of what seems to be the most subjective aspect of our memories, that is, the emotions and feelings of our past experiences. In these last two chapters, I analyse the different interactions that can take place between memories and emotions and defend the idea that there can be memories with an emotional aspect that is not reducible neither to a propositional memory nor an occurrent and present emotion

Abstract (sommario):
The present project consists of carrying out certain investigations in order to analyze and provide solutions to a problem, which is the lack of accessibility and time for people to print their photographs. Today, the habit of physically having an album with special memories has been lost, since people prefer to upload their photos to social networks. However, research and interviews found that most people do not buy an album, because there are not many places where photos are printed at a reasonable price. For this reason, our team at the Peruvian University of Applied Sciences has determined that, if there is the intention of people to purchase an album, but that it is accessible and original for the client, according to their tastes and preferences, so, for To satisfy our target audience, personalized albums will be made with prices from S / 50 soles to S / 80 soles depending on the number of photos they want, the consumer will choose the theme for their album, the photographs will be edited by us and in different sizes , we will have a mobile application where there will be a user database, in order to choose and edit the photos of your best memories, at the end of the album it will be sent to your home. To this end, a series of investigations and experiments has been carried out, with which our proposal is supported with the problem statement, solutions and a profitable projection of the business.

Abstract (sommario):
Memories are experiences that are removed from our present time and space. The images I create are also removed; they are of a specific time and place, an instant or series of instances captured. The work I have produced in this program is an amalgamation of two artistic media, photography and paint. I choose to layer images to emphasize the complexity of experiences and to illustrate a sense of time. The combination of a mechanical and a handmade object emphasizes the intricacy of our experiences. What is revealed is a combination of color and image that creates multiple compositions within the whole. Layering paint with photography and sculpture allows me to continue to experiment and explore the variety of media that I find most interesting. I draw inspiration from many artists including Jackson Pollack, Willem DeKooning, Richard Diebenkorn, the Starn Twins, David Hockney and Frida Kahlo. These influences and my own interpretations are what makes my work my own.

Abstract (sommario):
In Sweden over 60 % of the population live in a city with a population over 5000 inhabitants (Statistiska centralbyrån). The city life is in many ways considered to be a more sustainable lifestyle with shorter transportation routes and possibilities to co-use various systems. The life in the city consists (like anywhere) of eating food, drinking beverages, usage of hygiene products and clothes, usage of energy for laptops, phones and lights, transportation to work, schools and various appointments. Together all of it somehow fulfil our basic needs. These basic needs are generally not supplied by the cities we live in. We depend on the hinterlands either within Sweden or outside of Sweden. The hinterlands consist of all sorts of resources from water to fertile soil to minerals. Today and through history these resources and the value of them are put into the cities. Often done so at the cost of the environment and the people living there. At the cost of the environment and people, the lack of providing resources for the nation in general and cities in particular is the reason this thesis focus on "How could we review what a sustainable lifestyle is and instead create a more metabolic system between cities and the hinterland?". The question is studied within the setting of the island Oaxen and througout the thesis the author explores different perspectives and themes of it.

Gerkens, David. "Are recovered memories accurate?" Diss., Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/2259.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Research in our laboratory has demonstrated blocked and recovered memories within the context of a controlled experiment. The comparative memory paradigm allows for comparisons of recovered memories, continuous memories, and false memories. Additional research in our laboratory has shown two distinct types of memory errors; semantic based errors which occur due to pre-existing category knowledge, and episodic based errors in which the source of details (list members) are misattributed. Independently, these two lines of research have illuminated basic memory processes, however, they have not been combined previously. That is, the experiments in the present study explore the susceptibility of recovered memories to semantic and episodic based errors relative to continuous memories. Experiment 1 replicated the large blocking and recovery effects previously found by our laboratory. Additionally, it demonstrated that recovered memories were no more prone to semantic based errors than were continuous memories. These errors occurred very infrequently despite the use of materials chosen specifically to induce such errors. Experiment 2 again replicated the large blocking and recovery effects. The equivalent low rate of semantic based errors was also replicated. However, Experiment 2 also revealed that recovered memories were more susceptible to episodic based errors than were continuous memories. This was especially true when the memory block occurred in an interference treatment condition. Finally, post-recall source recognition tests failed to improve memory accuracy. In fact, numerically both semantic based and episodic based errors increased on the source recognition test relative to the cued recall test. Findings are discussed in relation to the source monitoring and fuzzy-trace theories of memory as well as the legal and clinical recovered memory controversy.

Fotopoulou, Aikaterini. "Confabulation : constructing motivated memories". Thesis, Durham University, 2005. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3936/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Neurological confabulation is a prototypical form of false remembering and as such, it can provide insight into the nature of human memory. The main aims of the thesis was to empirically investigate the neuropsychological hypothesis that the content of confabulation is motivated. This was addressed by studying the neuropathological and neuropsychological profiles of 13 neurological patients with severe forms of confabulation, and by conducting three original experimental group studies and two single-case studies. Confabulating patients were compared with frontal and amnesic non-confabulating patients, as well as with neurologically healthy controls. Neuropathological findings confirmed previous indications of orbital and medial prefrontal cortex (OMPFC) damage or disconnection. Neuropsychological data showed that the presence of amnesia and executive function varied across confabulating patients. The first experimental study revealed that bilateral confabulating patients showed a positive emotional bias in their spontaneous confabulations. The second study, based on a recognition experiment, confirmed the presence of this bias, over and above the deficits of temporality and reality monitoring. The third study was based on an emotional prose recall experiment, in which the self- relevance of the material was manipulated. This revealed that the emotional biases shown by confabulating patients were self-serving, and not explicable by deficits of amnesia or executive dysfunction. These self-serving biases were common to bilateral and unilateral confabulating patients, but their confabulations showed valence differences. Two single-case studies provided further specification to these findings and showed that confabulating patients form confabulations according to the values and goals of their premorbid self-representation. In conclusion, this thesis provided experimental support for the hypothesis that the content of confabulation is motivated. This finding was conceptualised as a disinhibition of emotional memory associations, most likely caused by damage or functional disconnection of the OMPFC from adjacent limbic structures. These conclusions have wider implications about the role of the OMPFC in mediating the relation between emotion and memory.

Abstract (sommario):
Being absent from things or places for a period of time, we try to connect by revisiting our memories. There is always a vivid remembrance of certain objects or surroundings, but when we try to connect them, the truth in our mind deviates from the reality. The disintegration of the memories and the morphing of our imagination create a different reality in our minds that we begin to believe, considering that the truth becomes almost completely abstracted and obscured as time passes.

Lin, Tzu-Ching Esther. "Encoding specific associative memories". Thesis, Cardiff University, 2010. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/55903/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The overarching aim of this thesis was to examine the nature of what is encoded during simple associative learning and configural learning. The experiments used rats as subjects and appetitive conditioning designs to assess the validity of two assumptions that are prevalent within standard accounts of learning in animals. First, animals simply represent the patterns of stimulation that are currently present in the environment. Second, that although the conditions that prevailed during the acquisition of associative knowledge have a marked effect on the strength of the resulting association, the association itself is "blind" with respect to the origin of this influence. The results presented in Chapters 2 and 3 undermine the first assumption by showing that associatively provoked (Experiments 1-3) and short-term traces (Experiments 4-6) can be assimilated into configural representations. The results presented in Chapter 4, from studies involving control rats (Experiment 7) and rats with lesions of the hippocampus (Experiment 8), indicate that animals ordinarily represent the nature of the stimulus trace (immediate or short-term) in the associative structures that are acquired during conditioning. The findings from Chapter 4 are inconsistent with the view that associative learning is blind with respect to the nature of the encoding conditions. Taken together, the novel results presented in this thesis reveal that what is encoded during simple associative learning and configural learning is much richer than has hitherto been realized.

Ferron, Michela. "Collective Memories in Wikipedia". Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Trento, 2012. https://hdl.handle.net/11572/368923.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Collective memories are precious resources for the society, because they contribute to strengthening the emotional bonding between community members, maintaining groups cohesion, and directing future behavior. Understanding the formation of the collective memories of emotional upheavals is important to a better comprehension of people's reactions and of the consequences on their psychological health. Previous studies investigated the effects of single traumatizing events, but few of them applied a quantitative approach to analyze the different psychological processes associated to the collective memories formation of upheavals on a large scale. This thesis explores the opportunities of applying quantitative methods to the study of collective memories in a collaborative environment such as the English Wikipedia. First, the presence of commemoration processes in Wikipedia articles and talk pages about traumatic events will be investigated through the analysis of edit activity patterns. Second, natural language processing techniques will be applied to detect differences in the collective representations of traumatic and non traumatic events, in the temporal focus of old and recent traumatic events, and in the representations of natural and human-made disasters. Third, the temporal evolution of language related to emotional, cognitive and social processes will be analyzed in the talk pages of two different emotional upheavals, the 2005 London bombings and the 2011 Egyptian revolution. The results will confirm the interpretation of Wikipedia as a global memory place, and highlight specific psychological processes related to the formation of collective memories of different types of traumatic events, opening the way to the quantitative study of collective memory formation in digital collaborative environments.

Inserted in the field of History of Education this research adopted as a general objective to analyze aspects related to the preparation of the Social Identity of the current Institute of Education Sarah Kubitschek (IESK) also trying to take a look into the process of building a Collective Memory about the same institution especially in region in which the institution is located the West Zone Carioca. The choice of the adopted time frame: the years between 1957 and 1978 was driven by the view that in that period the current IESK lived six (6) key moments, mentioned below: The creation of Normal Sarah Kubitschek School (?1957) and its installation in the municipal school Venezuela, transfer to your first own place (1960), the move to the building in which is still (1970), its transformation into a state college (1973), the creation of Campo Grande Institute of Education (1974) and 1978 when passes to be called the Institute of Education Sarah Kubitschek. Adopted as its main theoretical references the identity strategy notions of Dubar (1997) and collective memory (Halbwachs). The thread of the methodology of this study was the analysis of the History of the Institute of Education Sarah Kubitschek document prepared by the State Department of Education and has been guiding the search and subsequent analysis of other sources laws published by the Official Gazette of the former state of Guanabara, newspaper articles and interviews. I believe that the analyzes carried out during this research tried to highlighted the story Sarah was permeated by issues that contributed to consecrate a very specific image about the same: that of an institution with a long tradition, notoriety and excellence and for this would have contributed to the recognition and progress of a region that for decades has been known by the significant name of Sertão Carioca.

Enright, Corinne S. "Characteristics underlying vivid autobiographical memories". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28217.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The following thesis reviews literature relevant to vivid autobiographical memories. In particular, attention is paid the theoretical debate over whether a special memory mechanism is required to explain the existence of vivid memories (VMs). The three experiments presented in this thesis addressed four main questions. First, are some life-events are more likely to be vividly recalled than others? Second, can the "Now Print" special memory mechanism theory proposed by Brown and Kulik (1977) explain the existence of VMs? Third, can ordinary memory theories explain the existence of VMs? Fourth what aspects of distinctiveness allow the memory system to differentiate between recall of events in a vivid versus non-vivid manner? The first question was explored by categorizing reported memories into thematic clusters and comparing the percentage of VMs falling into each category with a control group of readily available memories in Experiment 1, and to a control group of non-VMs in Experiment 2. Both experiments found that the percentage of VMs reported for injurious and life-threatening events was significantly higher in the VM groups than in either control group. The second question was addressed by examining the relationships between vividness and the two primary factors (consequentiality and affective arousal) that Brown and Kulik proposed as triggers for the special mechanism. Although both of these factors were significantly correlated with vividness, the nature of the relationship between these factors and vividness was not found to be of the discontinuous and necessary nature required by the "Now Print" model. Further, the relationship between consequentially and vividness was found in Experiment 2 to be explainable in terms of rehearsal. In order to address the third question, subjects were asked, in both Experiments 2 and 3, to rate their memories on scales which indexed factors generally thought to underlie superior memory performance (rehearsal and arousal). Each of these factors were found to be significantly correlated with vividness, however, they could not explain a great deal of the variance in vividness ratings. The fourth issue addressed in this thesis, is whether distinctiveness of certain aspects of the event serve to differentiate between well-remembered non-VMs and well-remembered VMs. Distinctiveness of affective and cognitive aspects of the event were found to be significantly associated with vividness of recall, whereas, other measures of distinctiveness were not. Also discussed in this thesis are the relationship between event pleasantness and vivid recall, sex differences and content effects.

Abstract (sommario):
This work was developed within the methodological guidelines of a qualitative case study, having as its object the Gabriel Prestes Fanfare - FAGAP - from the city of Lorena, located in the Vale do Paraíba Paulista region. The onset of the research involved getting to know how the fanfare space interferes with its participants by means of a long, effective immersion in the fieldwork. The adopted research plan was developed in such a way as to simultaneously follow two analytical axes on the object of the thesis: a diachronical one and a synchronical one. The diachronical axis enabled studying the group within an historical frame of reference of fanfares as well as FAGAP itself, while the synchronical axis dealt with current circumstances. Crossing these two axes made it possible to delineate a configuration of FAGAP and to analyze the characteristics it shares with other musical groups, as well as to focus on its peculiarities. Adopting such a methodological design proved possible to do away with an investigative perspective focused solely on the present situation of the group being studied, as well as to recover practices, contexts and traditions which help approach the group in its everyday life. The data collected in the historical research and those collected in the fieldwork produced a dense body of knowledge which was critically analyzed in the light of authors who study representations and cultures, particularly Jean Claude Abric, Iuri Lotman and Bruno Latour. By confronting the history of fanfares to that of FAGAP itself, the data show how fanfares have survived cultural changes and resisted the threat of extinction, becoming an educational space for youths.

Flash memory devices dominate the non-volatile memory market, with device structures that utilize charge storage in polysilicon floating gates imbedded in insulating silicon oxide films'. As demands for high storage density, high chip memory capacity, and decreasing process costs continue to mount, conventional flash memory has found it challenging to continue scaling and it may reach fundamental scaling limits because of the minimum tunnel oxide thickness and poor charge retention due to defects in the tunneling oxide, necessitating modification in the implementation of the flash memory technology . In this study nano-segmented floating gate memories consisting of a uniform set of identical organic dye molecules were fabricated and evaluated for potential use as programmable charge storage and charge retention elements in a future flash memory technology. Viability of molecular thin films to serve as an energetically-uniform set of ~1nm in size charge- retaining sites is tested on a series of molecular materials, the best performing of which are thermally evaporated thin films of 3,4,9,10- perylenetetracarboxylic bis-benzimidazole (PTCBI). The initial results show device durability over 105 program/erase cycles, with hysteresis window of up to 3.3V, corresponding to charge storage density as high as 5 x 1012 cm2. Data shows that charge retention is improved for molecular films with lower carrier mobility, which for the first time experimentally confirms in a coherent material set that inhibiting charge transport by nano-segmented floating-gate structures benefits the memory retention. These results show a first step towards a possible approach to miniaturization of non-volatile memory by using molecules as segmented charge storage elements in the floating gate flash memory technology.

Abstract (sommario):

This thesis explores the way in which words, memories, and images of District Six are mediated and performed in an attempt to memorialised a destroyed urban landscape. It expands the borders of 'performance' to include oral (re)constructions of place by ex-residents, which in turn opens a space for a reflective analysis in which Marianne Hirsch’s psychodynamic theory of ‘postmemory’ is explored through the phrase ‘Children of District Six’. It traces the role and influence of ex-residents in shaping the politics and poetics of the District Six Museum and argues that orality and performance are singularly sympathetic in evoking and remembering the aesthetic, cultural, and political realms of District Six. It then shifts towards an analysis of two creative projects; Magnet Theater's Onnest’bo and the Museum’s Re-Imagining Carnival in which the themes of place, home, loss, exile, resistance, advocacy and restitution rotate around experiences of forced removals in general and District Six in particular. A thematic cord is created between these performance pieces and oral testimonies and their combined mediation of the many archives of District Six. Through an engagement with the performative odysseys and attendant archives of Re-Imagining Carnival and Onnest’bo the thesis examine metaphysical enactments of material loss, engages with tactics of re-construction of place and experience through memory, connects the psychic worlds of memory and performance and suggests an ideological flow between oral history, witnessing, and theatre. It is an exploration underpinned by the question of the role of performance in memorialising national narratives and the potential of creative mobilisations of memory in enacting psychic restitution. Both Onnest’bo and Re-Imagining Carnival are linked to the District Six Museum, and as such the Museum, its methodologies, ethics, ethos, and work with tangible and intangible heritage serve as an essential ideological foundation from which these creative visions emerge.

Boyle, Adele. "Constructing Memories: Time Made Tangible". Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34950.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Time, by definition, is an intangible phenomenon. Everyone knows it exists and can tell the passage of time based on the track of the sun and the hands on a clock, but time itself is an invisible entity. This architectural thesis maintains that time can be made tangible through the relationships formed between people and their personal histories and memories. The predominant way the present knows anything about its past is through someoneâ s telling of it. A person who experienced the past shares with the present and in doing so, gives the past and time itself presence. This Memory Center, located in Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C., gives the opportunity for people to share their memories and experiences in order to give time physical presence. Like an interactive science museum, the Memory Center opens itself to the people who visit it and allows for interactions that create lasting memories. Although one cannot consciously control most of what becomes memory, events that are new or unusual or involve interacting with new people usually form stronger and more lasting memories.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The human brain is extremely effective at performing pattern recognition, even in the presence of noisy or distorted inputs. Artificial neural networks attempt to imitate the structure of the brain, often with a view to mimicking its success. The binary correlation matrix memory (CMM) is a particular type of neural network that is capable of learning and recalling associations extremely quickly, as well as displaying a high storage capacity and having the ability to generalise from patterns already learned. CMMs have been used as a major component of larger architectures designed to solve a wide range of problems, such as rule chaining, character recognition, or more general pattern recognition. It is clear that the memory requirement of the CMMs will thus have a significant impact on the scalability of such architectures. A domain specific language for binary CMMs is developed, alongside an implementation that uses an efficient storage mechanism which allows memory usage to scale linearly with the number of associations stored. An architecture for rule chaining is then examined in detail, showing that the problem of scalability is indeed settled before identifying and resolving a number of important limitations to its capabilities. Finally an architecture for pattern recognition is investigated, and a memory efficient method to incorporate general invariance into this architecture is presented---this is specifically tested with scale invariance, although the mechanism can be used with other types of invariance such as skew or rotation.

Connell, Paul Marshall. "Perspectives on Childhood Consumption Memories". Diss., The University of Arizona, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195534.

Abstract (sommario):
The armchair social scientist will notice that individuals frequently refer to consumption that occurred in childhood. Books, toys, movies, cartoon characters, and even favorite foods are just a few examples of these childhood consumption referents. In her now well-cited and classic study on 15 different consumer-brand relationships, Fournier (1998) identified individual's relationships with childhood consumption referents and called them childhood friendships. Nevertheless, there is a relative dearth of consumer research exploring effects of marketing that begin in childhood and extend into adulthood, what functions childhood friendships might serve, and what consequences there might be to these relationships. In my dissertation, I aim to contribute to the consumer psychology literature with two separate essays pertinent to childhood friendships. In the first essay, I explore the meaning of these relationships and the functions they serve in consumer identity throughout the life cycle. In the second essay, I examine effects of early childhood brand relationships on biased judgments and decision-making.

Abstract (sommario):
The widespread usage of NAND flashmemory technology has faced a surprising increment, far beyond what it was originally expected, mainly thanks to the advances in the manufacturing processes. Introducing for the first time in the literature the concept of the Service-Oriented Non VolatileMemories (SONVMs), the goal of this PhD thesis is to enhance the degree of runtime reconfigurability of an MLC NAND Flash controller, through the provision of userselectable differentiated memory access modes (i.e., services). Each mode implements a specific trade-off between read throughput, write throughput, reliability, and power. In particular, the proposed solution envisions adaptivity at two different layers: architectural level and device level. The architecture layer adaptivity is based on adaptive ECC decoding structure. It implements a Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenhem (BCH) ECC with programmable correction capability. The physical layer adaptivity is based on an adaptive high-voltage sub-system of the Flash memory device. After having considered the flexibility and the trade-offs in the physical layer and in the ECC sub-system in isolation, this thesis aims at acting upon their parameters at the same time to show unprecedented degrees of adaptivity to application requirements in the reliability/ performance/power optimization space, thus identifying a set of differentiated access modes that can be configured in the memory controller [

GROSSI, Alessandro. "Emerging non volatile memories reliability". Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Ferrara, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11392/2488205.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This work presents the results of the research activity performed during the XXIX-th cycle of the Ph.D. school in Engineering Science of Università degli Studi di Ferrara. In particular the thesis focuses on the electrical characterization, physics, modeling and reliability of innovative non-volatile memories, addressing three of the most promising candidates for the floating gate based memories replacement which are currently facing a technology dead end. The manuscript is organized as follows. In Chapter 1 planar CT-NAND memory arrays are considered, showing that the main reliability issues affecting such technology are endurance and retention. Enhanced program and read algorithm able to reduce such limitations will be presented and characterized, highlighting the advantages obtained in terms of reliability. After that, the performances of Solid State Drives (SSD) integrating CT-based memories and using the proposed algorithms will be simulated and evaluated. In Chapter 2 the results obtained on RRAM will be presented and discussed focusing on the variability, which is the main reliability issue of these nonvolatile memories. The impact of Forming, Set and Reset operations on variability will be evaluated, starting from single pulse operations up to program and verify algorithms. The quantum point contact model will be used to give a physical explanation of the results obtained in characterization. After that, the process parameters impact on variability and reliability will be discussed. Finally, the fundamental variability limits of such technologies will be defined through an extensive array characterization and radiation hard application perspectives will be provided. In Chapter 3, the results obtained on TAS-MRAM technology will be reported. The reliability and the cell-to-cell variability will be evaluated during endurance tests by extracting a set of characteristic parameters from measurements performed on 1kbits arrays. After a preliminary optimization of the writing parameters on fresh devices, the effectiveness of the optimized parameters will be verified during cycling by evaluating their advantages in terms of cell-to-cell variability and breakdown reduction. After that, a novel TAS-MRAM array with optimized read procedure (Self Referenced) will be tested and compared with the previous one to highlight its advantages in terms of reliability. The conclusions of this work will be reported at the end of the manuscript outlining what has been accomplished, proposing possible applications for the technologies studied in this thesis and suggesting future works that could extend and improve the understanding of the reliability issues on such memory technologies.
