Testo completoWith several official spaces dedicated to the memory of slavery opening on both sides of the Atlantic over the past two decades, the (in)expressible and (in)visible character of the personal and collective memories of this particular past have become an issue for artists looking to write, film and perform them. Today, “palimpsest” cinema and literature (Genette) is putting the archives and foundational texts (Césaire, Glissant, Louverture, Walcott, etc.) of these living memories back in motion, in a process of decomposition and recomposition open to the future.Because of the violence of transatlantic deportation, the uprooting from Africa and the joint exploitation of bodies and lands, relationships – and in particular the relationships to environment, location and space– form part of both the difficulty and necessity for artistic approaches that work on these memories within a postcolonial context deeply tied to ecological issues. Starting from an echopoetic study, this research aims to bring attention to experiences of contemporary wakes, the night and Glissant’s “deep” (under the sea, under the ground and up in the sky) that the pieces of Fabienne Kanor and the collective The Living and the Dead Ensemble invite us into. From places of opacity, déparler, darkness and kinesics (Paul Gilroy), these artistic approaches make it possible for the singularities of the memories of slavery to become part of a space of resonance and sharing, within a vivid relationship to the past that opens up new paths across and even beyond Atlantic space

Testo completoAlthough the study of the memories of slavery has still attracted little attention among scholars in Haïti, the first country to be freed from the jaws of transatlantic slavery. Existing synthesis work on the subject are incomplete and take little these memories into account as being of heritage. The present thesis aims to fill this gap and to better our understanding of the situation, the entanglement and the stakes of the memories of slavery in Haiti today. Drawing from a large variety of oral and written sources, the study reveals a two parallel currents of thought characterized by, on the one hand, a lacunar amnesia of slavery and its social consequences (poverty, problem of color, social exclusion), and, on the other hand, by a hypermnesia of glorious historical events (war of independence, slave revolts and liberation). The perceptions of Haitians are divided around the tangible and intangible elements present in public and social space and these divergent views remain at the heart of numerous controversies which shape a wide range of memories: prestigious memory, traumatizing memory, memory of guilt, memory of victimization, memory of reclamation, and consensual memory. Religious practices such as voodoo form the very apotheosis of a memorial occultism connected to this past. All of these memories shed light on the main issues -historic and mnemonic, cultural and religious, social and political, and economic - of the processes of heritage making in Haiti today. The consequences of slavery are very profond and complex. It is difficult to fully appreciate their full depth. Because the memory of slavery is like an iceberg, we only perceive the summit: the base is submerged and hidden under water of forgetfulness. This thesis throws light on the role of these multiple memories in the construction of Haitian identity, torn between recognition and non-recognition of the ancestry of slavery and the appropriation of the ancestry of a free man. Through its memories of slavery, Haiti teaches us that valorizing heritage - beyond the oft-mentioned aspects of “living together” and tourism - is also a tool for making demands, for perpetual combat, for questioning social inequalities, and for resistance. This thesis also teaches us that the heritage status of the memories of slavery in Haitian society today must accommodate the trauma suffered pain, the pride of having triumphed over this tragedy and the consequences of

Testo completoSlavery and the slave trade have officially been abolished everywhere in the world, yet there is no doubt slavery as a subject has remained relevant in public institutional discourse. It is deeply connected to a country’s representation of its own past and, therefore, of itself (its ethos). To examine these two elements (primarily in French institutional discourse and secondarily in ONU’s and Unesco’s institutional discourse), this dissertation will analyse the official speeches delivered by French political representatives on days of public commemoration of the abolition of slavery. To better detect its characteristics, the speeches will be compared with their equivalents produced by UN and UNESCO on their commemorative days of the abolition of slavery. Since such days of commemoration have only been instituted in the recent past, the span of time covered by this research is of approximately 30 years. The study uses a purely qualitative methodology and the tools of French discourse analysis and mainly focuses on linguistic choices around institutional ethos (both French and international: ONU’s and Unesco’s), interdiscourse, and slavery and the slave trade as part of the nation’s and Europe’s past. The final aim of the study is to understand whether these days of commemoration act as moments of public self-criticism about a country’s (and Europe’s) colonialist and slaving past, or only as acritical celebration of national and international identities (of former slavery-exploiting countries).

Testo completoThis research deals with the spatialization processes of memories of the slave trade and slavery and highlights the social, political, cultural and architectural complexity of memorial sites. The Slave Trade Route in Ouidah, a memorial circuit inaugurated in 1993 by the Beninese government, is the main study field for this ethnographic research work, carried out between 2015 and 2020. Analysing this site, which is currently undergoing government-led rehabilitation, gives a new perception on the evolution of commemorative sites, in particular in Africa. By taking a multi-disciplinary approach and by using diverse theoretical tools, this work takes part in the current debates on the re-reading of · the history of the slave trade, the evolution of its symbolic and material representations, the complex set of actors and the contemporary stakes of memorial sites (conceptual, formal, but also economic and touristic). The thesis also accounts for the diversity of memorial practices in Benin and examines the limits of the concepts of patrimonalisation and monumentalisation of memories, in the light of vernacular modes of conservation and expression of the past. Moreover, it questions how the physical space, with its political and symbolic dimension, becomes a territory to occupy. The analysis of this site is supplemented by the study of certain aspects of the Memorial to the , Abolition of Slavery of Nantes, and, to a lesser extent, by that of the ACTe Memorial in Guadeloupe. The multi-situated approach invites to observe the commemorative phenomena from an itinerant and transnational perspective
