Marguerite Yourcenar, known as an author, is also the translator of about a dozen works. My purpose here is to trace the evolution of her oeuvre in the field of translation in relation to her literary output. I have divided the former into three distinct periods, the first of which covers the closing years of the 1930s, when Marguerite Yourcenar translated Virginia Woolf's The Waves and Henry James's What Maisie Knew. Her interest in these authors is to a large extent stylistic. On the other hand, the translation of Constantin Cavafy's poetry, which was begun during the same period, reflects the intimist themes to be found in Marguerite Yourcenar's early narratives {Alexis and the others), although she was then already seeking out other thematic sources. The translation was only published in 1958. It consequently falls within a second period: that of the "présentations critiques" (critical commentaries). These major efforts in translation {Présentation critique de Constantin Cavafy, La Couronne et la Lyre, Fleuve profonde, Sombre rivière) are marked by a manifest preoccupation with the aesthetic. But themes of a more universal character and engagement in the socio-political sphere also enter into the choice of the texts for translation (negro spirituals, Présentation critique d'Hortense Flexner). These translations were contemporaneous with the creation of Marguerite Yourcenar's most important novels, namely Mémoires d'Hadrien and L'OEuvre au Noir. The last of the three periods, the 1980s, finds her tackling far less ambitious projects, the function of which tends increasingly towards ethical communication. The only one of them that bears any resemblance to the "présentations critiques" is the essay on Yukio Mishima and the translation of Cinq Nô Modernes, assuming that these are to be considered as an ensemble. Here, as elsewhere, it also emerges that Marguerite Yourcenar is largely indifferent to the existence of other translations.

L'article se présente comme une brève analyse de l'oeuvre de Marguerite Yourcenar, grande femme de lettres et académicienne française, auteure des Mémoires d'Hadrien, son premier succès international au début des années cinquante. Notre objectif est de classer le roman dans une sous-catégorie littéraire et de dégager son originalité formelle à l'intérieur du genre des mémoires sous forme épistolaire. Le mélange entre le roman, les mémoires, la correspondance et la poésie présente un certain polygraphisme. La recherche permanente, l'érudition approfondie et la résistance à une approche unilatérale sont la garantie d'un individualisme et d'une originalité qui respecte profondément la tradition sans y être limitée.

Dos cuidados com a escrita dos prefácios dos romances publicados e demais textos de sua autoria, passando pela atenção ao seu discurso durante as entrevistas concedidas, pela observação e crítica do que se publicava em revistas e jornais sobre sua vida e sua obra, até a presença marcante do eu-escritor em suas cartas, Yourcenar se delineia enquanto escritora. Para chegar a essa imagem, a esse personagem cuidadosamente construído, a autora realiza um trabalho de apagamento do íntimo. The current paper focuses on the literary mechanisms that Marguerite Yourcenar used to (re)construct the historical personality of the Roman emperor Hadrian in the fictional autobiography, Memoirs of Hadrian. We analyze how M. Yourcenar represents an effort to reconstruct a historical period and a historical personality through the intersection of true events and fiction in the form of a fictional autobiography, supported by documentary work, in this particular novel. Hadrian’s imaginary letter to his protégé and student, the future emperor Marcus Aurelius, is not only a writing of ancient history, but also a modern chronicle of one man’s efforts to free himself from the constraints of human destiny. The mechanisms of writing a memoir provide the main character with the opportunity to (re)write History, his personal biography. Different narrative forms (“I”, “he”, “we”) allow the author of the novel not only to give voice to the main character, but also to follow the development of the initial intention - from writing a letter to his heir to thinking about existence, i.e. from the individual to the general plan of humanity. Therefore, through the reconstruction of Hadrian’s life and his age, we show that Marguerite Yourcenar’s ambition is not only to illuminate the gallery of masks of a powerful historical figure, but also to overcome them and to capture in words the fragility of a man who enters death with his eyes open.

Au cours de ce travail, nous sommes incités à utiliser la théorie du personnage au singulier, à lire en toute cohérence l'intérieur des textes yourcenariens, en nous focalisant sur les différents rapports interpersonnels instaurés. Nous justifions la présence de notre corpus par le choix déterminant de ces trois textes: Le Coup de grâce (1939), Mémoires d'Hadrien (1951) et L’Œuvre au Noir (1968), qui ont été présentés dans trois temps révolus et trois époques charnières les guerres baltes, l'Empire gréco-romain et le siècle de la Renaissance. Nous abordons ces œuvres par un procédé textuel minutieusement tracé en partant de l'œuvre pour arriver à la personne. Le support de notre réflexion est l'ouvrage fondamental de Philippe Hamon : Le Personnel du roman, qui utilise un grille de Greimas et distingue les niveaux de description en précisant les modalités du savoir, du pouvoir et du voulons Nous trouvons pertinent d'appliquer cette grille d'analyse aux notions exprimées sur le personnage dans les textes de Yourcenar
We have founded our analysis on the existence of a special conception of the character in our corpus, encourage the recourse to the Character theory in the singular reading. Our corpus is justified by the seminal choice of these three works: Coup de grâce (1939), Mémoires d'Hadrien (1951) and L'Œuvre au Noir (1968),that were introduced during three bygone periods of time considered to be three turning points in History: The Baltic wars, The Greek Roman empire and The Renaissance Century. We approach these works through a textual proceeding that takes the work as a starting point to end up with a character study. Our reflection will take as a support Philippe Hamon's fundamental book: Le Personnel du roman, which uses Greimas' grid and distinguishes three levels of description while pinpointing the conditions of knowledge, power and goodwill. We find it relevant to apply this grid of analysis to the notions conveyed by the characters in Youcenar's works

Du jardin des chimeres au labyrinthe du monde, marguerite yourcenar parcourt avant tout un edale interne a son moi profond. L'etude decor romanesque chez marguerite yourcenar a voulu dechiffrer les descriptions effectuees autour des deux personnages, zenon et hadrien, en vue de penetrer les intentions creatrices de la romanciere. Cette facon d'aborder les romans par la "forme" nous amene naturellement au probleme du "fond", si present dans les deux romans, a savoir le desir d'aller du labyringhe a la liberte. Les deux existences differentes ont en commun la volonte de s'ouvrir vers le grand univers, symbole de la liberte. Le monde est aussi bien vu par un homme qui le fuit ou qui l'accuse que par un homme qui s'y attend a l'epanouissement de l'humain, et ces deux regards ont neanmoins besoin tous les deux de s'elargir a l'univers. The yourcenarian world, through its literary writings, let us see fragments of a labyrinthic world where opponents fight for freedom. From du jardin des chimeres to labyrinthe du monde, marguerite yourcenar is scanning her deep "me" internal universe. The present study spacials descriptions in marguerite yourcenar's novels wanted to penetrate the writer's creative thoughts by solving the mysterious scripts surrounding the characters, zenon and hadrien. This way of taking up those novels by the "form" brings us naturally to the omnipresent context problem in them, the desire to escape from the labyrinth. Those two very different existences have in common the will of opening up to the great universe symbolizing freedom. The world can either be seen by a man fleeing or criticizing it or by one expecting the blossoming of human kind ; both point of view need an opening to the universe. The spacial description around the hero characters become their spiritual status reflection

A partir d'un corpus constitue par les deux oeuvres majeures de marguerite yourcenar : memoires d'hadrien et l'oeuvre au noir (les autres oeuvres romanesques servant a fournir des exemples supplementaires) ou apparait le vocabulaire relatif au monde sensible, nous essayons d'analyser comment se structure l'univers des sensations, de quelles valeurs connotees elles se chargent, de quelles grandes significations elles deviennent porteuses, et a quelle quete elles aboutissent. Il s'avere que le monde sensible, en premier lieu exterieur, s'interiorise de plus en plus, au fur et a mesure que le heros murit et evolue, et ce, pour atteindre son paroxysme au moment de la mort. La recherche avide de voir, sentir, ressentir, propre au personnage yourcenarien correspond a une quete : celle de la sagesse, d'une sagesse plutot, car loin d'etre calme, elle est surtout "une mise en garde". Ces caracteristiques determinent le style de marguerite yourcenar
Starting from a corpus made up with on yourcenar's two major works : memoires d'hadrien and l'oeuvre au noir ( the other romantic works only serve as a further illustration of the same points) where the vocabulary relating to the world of the senses appears; we try to analyse how the universe of sensations is structured, what connoted values they undertake, what great meanings they carry and to which quest they lead to. It turns out that the world of the senses from exteriorized at first, becomes more and more interiorized as the hero matures and develops to reach climax when he dies. The eager search for seeing, smelling, feeling specific to yourcenar's character is the result of a quest, that of wisdom or rather some sort of wisdom, far from being about calm, it's more of "a warning". Marguerite yourcenar's style is defined by those features

A travers une étude de l'imaginaire yourcenarien, menée selon trois axes complémentaires, les images, les symboles et les mythes, nous proposons une relecture de trois œuvres majeures de l'écrivain, les nouvelles orientales, les Mémoires d'Hadrien et L'œuvre au noir. Cette relecture a tout d'abord pour but de mettre en évidence la constante recherche de l'image dans le texte, car celle-ci rend compte non seulement d'une volonté de concrétisation de l'abstrait, mais surtout de la dimension symbolique des trois œuvres et de la vision du monde qui s'y exprime. Mais le principal objectif de notre étude est la mise en évidence de l'idéal humain selon Marguerite Yourcenar, à travers l'analyse des données symboliques et mythiques dans les nouvelles orientales, les Mémoires d'Hadrien et L'œuvre au noir. Nous considérons en effet que le type humain révélé par la confrontation des références mythiques dans ces trois textes constitue une figure centrale et essentielle de la création yourcenarienne
This analysis of the imaginary of Marguerite Yourcenar through three complementary approaches, images, symbols and myths, propound a new reading of three major works of the writer, the Nouvelles orientales, the Mémoires d'Hadrien and L'oeuvre au noir. Its aim is to display the constant search for images in the text that shows both a will to put abstractions into a concrete form and the symbolical dimension of the three works as well as the vision of the world it expresses. But the major purpose of our research is to display the human ideal after Marguerite Yourcenar, by analyzing symbol and myths in the Nouvelles orientales, the Mémoires d'Hadrien and L'oeuvre au noir. We consider indeed that the human type revealed by confronting mythical referring in these three texts is an essential character of yourcenary creation

Yourcenar : Mémoires d'Hadrien, L'oeuvre au noir, Un homme obscur et une belle matinée, sans pour autant exclure ou minimiser les nombreux liens qui rattachent cette trilogie à l'ensemble de l'oeuvre de l'auteur. Cependant, seuls ces 3 récits peuvent être considérés comme des romans initiatiques en ce qu'ils corespondent aux 3 grands étapes du scénario initiatique tel qu'on a pu l'établir : la préparation du néophyte, le voyage dans l'au-delà et la renaissance. The present work intends to study the development of the major theme of initiation in marguerite yourcenar's three great novels * memoirs of hadrian, the abyss, an obscure man and a lovely morning, without excluding or minimizing the numerous links which connect this trilogy to the production of the author as a whole. Hovewer, only these three narrations can be considered like initiatory works in so far as they correspond to the three great steps of the initiatory scenario such as it has been established : the preparation of the neophyte, the journey to the next world and the rebirth. In the yourcenarian narration, man confronted to the unknown and to the incomprehensible is continuously aware of the presence of the sacred which reveals itself in art, cosmos, and human consciousness. L’objectif de ce travail est d’analyser et de synthétiser un corpus littéraire à l’aide de statistiques. Classiquement, les fréquences des unités linguistiques indiquent la composition d’un texte ou son « thème ». D’inspiration stylistique et musicale, cette thèse propose de mesurer la rareté à la place de l’abondance, et de prendre en compte l’organisation des unités par leur rythme. Au sein d’un texte, les temps de retour d’une unité sont quasiment décorrélés. Ils se caractérisent par leur distribution en forme de cloche asymétrique, linéarisable avec un conditionnement par le passé. La répartition qui lisse ce spectre se mue alors en pierre de touche. Comparant deux textes, la distance généralisée mesure les écarts entre les répartitions. Dans l’ensemble, elle suit les évolutions de sa version classique fondée sur les fréquences, mais des divergences significatives apparaissent localement selon l’intensité de l’arythmie. Le corpus comprend trois romans du 20e siècle écrits par Yourcenar, Tournier et Le Clézio : Mémoires d’Hadrien, Vendredi ou les limbes du Pacifique et Désert. Les mesures linguistiques portent parallèlement sur les plans graphémologiques, syntaxiques et sémantiques. The purpose of this work is to analyse and synthetise a literary corpus with the use of statistics. Traditionally, the frequencies of linguistic units indicate the composition of a text or its “theme”. This thesis, inspired by stylistics and music, proposes to measure rarity instead of abundance, and to consider the organisation of the units on the basis of their rhythm. Within a text, the recurrence times of a unit are virtually decorrelated and characterised by their asymmetrical bell-shaped distribution, linearisable with a conditioning by the past. The cumulative distribution that smoothes out this spectrum thus becomes a touchstone. Comparing two texts, the generalised distance measures the differences between the cumulative distributions. Taken overall, it follows the developments of its traditional version based on the frequencies, but significant discrepancies appear locally depending on the intensity of the arrhythmia. The corpus consists of three 20th Century novels by Yourcenar, Tournier and Le Clézio : Mémoires d’Hadrien, Vendredi ou les limbes du Pacifique and Désert. The linguistic measurements are carried out simultaneously on the graphemological, syntactic and semantic planes. Globally, these planes correlate and seem to be deeply in accordance with the same linguistic laws. The graphemes may be favoured because they are objective and simple to exploit. Stylistically, the literary intuition is confirmed by the measurements, which show a grading between the works following their chronology. Their divisions form homogeneous assemblies within the corpus, in such a way that a style appears and permits to succesfully simulate the attribution of an author

Chapter 3 studies Marguerite Yourcenar’s distinctive synthesis of material mementos and personal recollections, historical documents and family relics. Yourcenar’s three-volume work Le Labyrinthe du monde (1974–1988) exemplifies a more general archival tendency in post-war autobiography; works by Perec, Barthes, and others also supplement personal testimony with documentary materials. Yourcenar’s trilogy marks a shift in her own practice from works that fictionalize history (Mémoires d’Hadrien, 1951), to a project that integrates “snippets of facts” within a factual composition. Yourcenar herself has a paradoxical place in this unusual autobiography, developing a family chronicle that attempts self-erasure even as it is organized around her relationship to the past. Developing a form of literary “necromancy,” Yourcenar’s writing mobilizes fictional devices to reanimate dead fragments of the past, while laying bare the work of research and reconstitution.
