Interrelation between religious communities is a challenge faced by the world's religions today. All religions tend to have a claim to absolutism, be it Islam, Christianity, Hinduism or Judaism. The particularistic-subjective claims of adherents of monotheism will have an impact on inter-religious conflicts. The differences between religions are only at the level of exotericism, while at the level of esotericism there is a meeting point. We cannot ignore the differences that exist within each religion to draw the conclusion that “all must be one”. In understanding the issue of religions, it is necessary to have a multicultural approach, where this approach tries to keep away from absolute, subjective and exclusive attitudes that put forward the moral and social aspects of religion.

The article is dedicated to the attitude of the great world religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Confucianism) to the world of finance, including banking. The issue of usury plays a key role together with the evolution of ethical aspects related to obtaining compensation for money lending. The analysis is focused on the other aspects of banking activities, such as saving, investing, and institutional development of the banking sector as well. The author underlines the far-reaching convergence between religions in this area, in spite of the considerable variation in historical and geographical conditions of their formation. The importance of cultural (religious) differences, including the nuances or more fundamental aspects, has a significant impact on bank management in different regions. For successful development, large multinational corporations have to take into consideration the abovementioned circumstances, regardless of globalization processes.

Archaeological research in relation to Jewish cemeteries is rarely undertaken, which is why any excavations, often carried out on the occasion of investments, are extremely valuable. The excavations in the area of two Masovian cemeteries, in Bródno in Warsaw and in Węgrów, were also of a verification nature. In Bródno, an attempt was made to mark the southern border of the cemetery, and in Węgrów, an attempt was made to establish the existence of a cemetery, the extent of which is not visible in the field. In both cases, archaeological research was carried out in cooperation with the Rabbinical Commission for Cemeteries and in accordance with the guidelines considering the attitude of Judaism to human remains. Based on source and religious texts, a set of features has also been created that help in identifying burials (and cemeteries).

This paper studies Erich Fromm’s critical theory of religion and looks into the evolution of the philosopher’s views. We analyze key concepts of Fromm’s humanistic psychology, including biophilia, rejection of idolatry, X-experience, classification of religions as humanistic or authoritarian, plea for sustainable coexistence with the environment, and some others. The author demonstrates close connection of these concepts with Judaic tradition, especially the messianism and negative theology of Maimonides. The paper is divided into chapters tracing the evolution of Fromm’s views on religion — from Hasidic Judaism, through following Freud and Marx, to the concept of humanistic religion. The analysis shows that starting from his early works and up to the radical, socialistic humanism as the pinnacle of his thought, Fromm as a philosopher and a strong Israelite draws inspiration from the religious tradition. Notably, his PhD thesis was devoted to the sociology of Hebrew diaspora, Der Sabbath, The Dogma of Christ. However, Fromm’s theory of religion, accordant with the Frankfurt School, combines aspects of Hegel, Marx and Freud’s teachings. Fromm’s views on religion are an original, self-consistent synthesis of diverse ideas, and result in the concept of radical humanism. The paper specifically considers Fromm’s view on idolatry as a form of alienation. Fromm urges to fight against idolatry in a bro.ader sense, finding it in various social phenomena, ranging from consumerism to religious fundamentalism. The paper also reviews the concept of X-experience that Fromm gives in You Shall Be as Gods. The X-experience is a special transcendental experience, separated from its multiple theistic or non-theistic conceptualizations. X-experience is psychological in its nature and leads to diminishing or eliminating narcissism. It constitutes a certain opposition to the alienation caused by idolatry. The work also considers Fromm’s idea of humanistic religion as related to his other concepts. The author supposes that the distinction between authoritarian and humanistic religions is tied to the earlier separation into authoritarian and humanistic ethics that Fromm presents in Man for himself. The impact of Marx and Freud on Fromm’s philosophy of religion is highlighted. While drawing from both, Fromm considered Marx’s theory to be deeper and more significant.

The Internet has become an integral part of the modern society. It has a strong influence on the social institutions and makes them adapt to the new conditions of the digital environment. Religion is not an exception despite its inherent resistance to change; such an ancient social construct was also forced to enter the process of digitalisation. The article reflects the peculiarities of this process: it analyses the activities of various religious movements in the Russian Federation in the digital environment and reveals the attitude of religious representatives (official and unofficial) to the process of adapting religion to the digital environment. The scholarly literature on the digitalisation of religion was analysed and the problematic aspects of this process were identified. A content analysis of the Internet communities and resources of the main traditional (Orthodoxy, Islam and Judaism) and non-traditional religious teachings (Neopaganism and Satanism)was carried out. We identified the attitude of religious representatives to the digitalisation of religion. We conducted an expert interview with bloggers whose activities are related to the dissemination of religious views on the Internet.

"Over the millennia, people have been forced, countless times, to leave their homeland and settle in other lands. As in the 21st century, the possible reasons were the same - the economic, political situation, discrimination, the difficulty of integrating or, simply, the fact that leaving was the only way out. The Jewish diaspora has known many stages, some recorded in the Bible - Torah - Old Testament. Others, such as the expulsion of the Jews from the Iberian Peninsula, led to the peregrinations of the Jews in various corners of the world. The present work aimed to put into the perspective of ancient Jewish religious writings the way in which the idea of refuge is treated today. The migration phenomenon is considered by some to be characteristic of the modern era, being regulated by national and international legislation. The way in which Judaism treated this subject - cities of refuge, moral obligation towards the one who asks for help, “Dina de malkuta dina” - the law according to which the law of the residence prevails over the religious law - represents an interesting model to follow, but also similar in certain aspects, with the current legislation. The present work aimed to highlight some good practices, less known, which facilitated the integration in various societies in certain situations. I researched the way in which the treatment of refugees changed over time, considering, however, that Judaism continued to be faithful, until today, to some religious principles that, in fact, regulate basic interpersonal relations. The article analyzes socio-demographic indicators obtained during the all-Russian population census in 1897, which characterize the socio-cultural aspects of the Jewish community of the Azov region and Mariupol. The share of the Jewish population in Mariupol was much larger than in the countryside. The urban population significantly prevailed over the rural population. Jewish and German agricultural colonies, as well as Ukrainian and Greek villages, were the centers of Jewish settlement in the countryside. The Jewish community of both the city and the countryside was predominantly young with a predominance of people of working and reproductive age. The identification of the Jewish community was determined by linguistic (Jewish language) and religious (Judaism) characteristics. The number of followers of Judaism was greater than the number of speakers of the Hebrew language due to the fact that some Jews communicated in other languages, mainly Russian. The share of Russian-speaking people in the city was higher than in the countryside, due to the greater number of Russification factors in the city. The social structure of the Jewish community of the city of Mariupol was determined by the total predominance of the bourgeois component with an insignificant presence of others, in particular, the peasantry and merchants. The rural area was characterized by the predominance of peasant and bourgeois classes. The structure of professional activity basically repeated the one that the Jews brought from the towns - craft and trade activity. In the countryside, a significant layer of agricultural activity was added, and in the city, a variety of free professions (journalists, lawyers, doctors, education workers) were spread.

This article explores the life and ministerial career of Claude U. Broach (1913–1997), who served as the pastor of St. John’s Baptist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, from 1944 through 1974 and in retirement served as the first full-time director of the Wake Forest University-Belmont Abbey College Ecumenical Institute. After detailing various aspects of Broach’s ministry as a pastoral ecumenical activist, the article identifies six features of Broach’s ecumenical activism that others can emulate today: (1) an emphasis on developing ecumenical relationships with the tradition with the greatest degree of difference from the Baptist tradition, the Catholic Church; (2) dialogue with Judaism as an aspect of ecumenical relations rather than inter-religious relations; (3) the development of personal relationships with Christians from other traditions; (4) the quest for Christian unity as the obligation of every believer; (5) receptive ecumenism, rather than the merger of denominations, as the path to the ecumenical future; and (6) the skillful use of media connections to serve as a public ecumenical theologian.

This article examines the peculiarities of royal power’s representation in the ideology of priests in early Judaism. Researchers of Judaism deem this period important since it is then that the basic ideas about the power institutions of society, their attributes, functions, and features were laid. The institution of the royal power appears to be the most significant here: this power transforms from purely secular to religious, and the priest becomes the king. This research is devoted to the aspects of these transformations that were not previously given due attention: the reflection of the authors who lived during this epoch upon the biblical king David’s image and his place in the new doctrine of power. Besides the understanding of the image within the scope of secular power, it also played an important role in the formation of priestly ideology in the period examined. Exploring the data from three sources (The 1st Book of Maccabees, The Book of Sirach, and The Damascus Document), the author concludes that the development of King David’s image perception took place in the following directions. The first one did not deny the possibility of the Davidic dynasty heir’s return but focused its attention on building a new doctrine of power, which would center around the figure of the elected priest. The second direction represented King David as a figure of the past, creating a new doctrine of power, where only a priest could lead the society. The third direction, represented by Qumran, radically revised the prophecies about the return of David’s bloodline to the throne: in their view, the Qumran community becomes King David by itself and receives primacy in Israel.

Communicative features of religious marketing are new objects of study for the Ukrainian scholars. The actuality of the study is stipulated by the fact that the studied subjects belong to such general communicative and linguistic problems as linguistic programming of personality, language and religious identity, semiotic code, God substitution, communicative manipulation, suggestion, etc. The cognitive significance of religious marketing for Ukrainians is determined by the factors of its influence on the consumers. Consumer behavior depends on the communicative specifics of religious marketing texts. The authors distinguish the pathogenic influence and influential texts with pragmatic function. The objects of our research are the communicative features of the Christian marketing, Islamic marketing and Judaic marketing in Ukraine. The subjects of our article are the marketing of communications, positioning of religious services and goods. The tasks are the following: to analyze the communicative aspects of religious marketing of Christians, Muslims and Jews in Ukraine. The methodology of the research is based on the current approaches to scientific studying of religious communication and channels of its promotion. We use discourse analysis (critical) for the science qualification of interactional aspects, socio-psychological and socio-cognitive characteristics, frameworks and contexts. Religious marketing communication great progress has been made in new media. Within the frames of marketing linguistics, new media linguistics peculiarities are also analyzed.

Deuteronomy 22:5 has sparked much interest and wonder for both readers and interpreters of the Bible, throughout Jewish history. Divided into three parts, the verse reads as follows: "A woman should not have keli gever (man's apparel, utensil or tool) on her; a man should not wear simlat isha (a woman's dress, robe, mantle, tunic); anyone who does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God." Each part of the verse has raised questions among exegetes, like how to define its key terms simlat isha and keli gever and what is the nature of the abomination. This thesis explores the responses to these questions through a presentation of the Jewish exegetical history of Deut. 22:5 from biblical times to the present. It demonstrates how the interpretations of this verse varied the application of the biblical law derived from it and thereby affected and altered dress codes, interactions, behhviours, and daily habits of Jewish men and women throughout history.

This paper examines the exegetical history of the prohibition against kindling fire on the Sabbath day. Since its biblical inception Ex. 35:3, the prohibition against kindling fire on the Sabbath, has undergone a multiplicity of interpretations. The texts examined in this paper survey the treatment of this verse from its inception through to the twentieth century and the advent of electricity. Over generations exegetes have understood this biblical verse to be a prohibition against kindling, burning, and even cooking. The debates concerning the legal status and implications of the verse have additionally been outlined in this paper. Tracing the history of this verse, therefore, provides insight into the meaning of the verse and its halakhic implications.

Patients who refuse a specific medical treatment for religious reasons must often overcome strongly entrenched presumptions held by physicians and judges, presumptions frequently based on personal values. A case in point is the refusal of blood transfusion therapy by Jehovah's Witnesses.
This paper rests on the following theory: The sanctity of life principle is not necessarily violated by respecting the autonomous decision of a patient who, for religious or moral reasons, chooses one therapy over another that may be favored by the treating physician. Where a patient has decided for conscientious reasons against a certain treatment in any given medical situation, the need to be informed will shift from the patient to the physician. The physician must understand the nature of the religious or moral conviction, as well as his own moral and legal obligation to respect the patient's wishes by providing the best medical care under the circumstances.

In this work, I argue that the Alexandiran position on feticide found in Hellenistic Judaism and appropriated by patristic, medieval and reformed theologians is defensible in the 21st Century. I formulate an argument from the Alexandrian position as it appears in several representative Christian traditions. This argument contends that that: [1] killing a human being without justification violates the law of God, [2] a formed conceptus (i.e. a fetus) is a human being and [3] that in the case of feticide (at least in the majority of cases) no justification is forthcoming. In developing my case, I argue that the objections raised against the premises of this argument by contemporary philosphers are unsound. I defend the intellectual acceptability of belief in and appeals to the existence of a divine law, the notion that a formed fetus is a human being and the claim that feticide lacks any justification in the vast majority of cases. In addition, I examine and critique theologians who claim the Alexandrian position is motivated by misogyny and those who claim it appropriates a translation error found in the Septuagint. I conclude that the traditional position is defensible and that contemporary dismissals of it are unconvincing.

In the Hebrew Bible, literary patterns of revelation and concealment are based on humanity's initial encounter with God in the Garden of Eden. God asks the question "Where are you?" Adam and Eve reveal themselves by articulating their concealment behind the fig leaf. This paradox effects their exile from Eden, and their progeny must henceforth mediate this paradox in their future verbal intercourse with God.
It is the intention of this work to suggest how in certain textual passages, this paradox is defined and structured according to a literary dichotomy of language and silence. After the exile, biblical characters proclaim their presence before God by uttering a password ("Here I am") which is, in effect, an existential utterance of dialogic reconstruction. Through various literary devices, I hope to show how this "vertical" dialogue is re-established by Adam and Eve's progeny, and how the biblical narrator(s) uses language to show silence as a "phenomenon" of the word.

The Tibetan Book of the Dead and the Jewish Tractate Mourning are important texts about death in their respective traditions. The Tibetan Book of the Dead is a manual read by the living to the deceased as the deceased journeys through the many realms of the after-life. It is an abstract, philosophical text. The Tractate Mourning on the other hand, is a highly empirical and pragmatic text that guides the living through their loss. It is concerned only with the living left behind and offers no guidance to the deceased. Despite this profound difference however, this thesis has as its objective to show that both traditions, as evidenced through these texts, share an underlying emotion: compassion. Through the concern shown to the deceased as he or she stumbles through the often terrifying realms of the after-life in the Tibetan tradition, and through the precise and detailed instructions given to the living in the Jewish tradition as the mourners are guided through their grief, both texts exhibit profound compassion.

Emil Ludwig Fackenheim became a Rabbi even as the Holocaust was claiming the lives of six million Jews. Further study, first in Scotland and then in Canada, brought him to an impressive academic career in philosophy, to which he committed much of his life and writings. Yet he was also driven to try to respond theologically to the Shoa, so as to offer Judaism a genuine alternative to the nineteenth century tradition of liberal Judaism which had not been able to withstand or fight against National Socialism when Hitler came to political power. By going behind that failed nineteenth century tradition, primarily in dialogue with the thought of Rosenzweig and Buber, Fackenheim thought, by the middle of the sixth decade of the twentieth century, that he had rediscovered a solid core for post-Auschwitz Jewish faith: one rooted in a recovery of supernatural revelation, of God's presence in, and the messianic goal of, history. The Six Day War of June 1967 threw his careful reconstruction of Jewish faith into disarray, however. Facing a second Holocaust in one lifetime; and with an acute awareness that once again the Jewish people stood alone, Fackenheim raised questions about God and history and the Messianic which utterly destroyed his reconstruction. Even as he struggled with the crisis, however, he began to discern that hope had become a commandment. He began a process of even more profound reconstruction (or "destructive recovery") of the faith that radically reshaped the possibility of hope for Jewish faith in a post-Shoa world. And Christian theologians in dialogue with him find it necessary to embark on a destructive recovery of hope for the Christian tradition as an authentically Christian response to Auschwitz. Emerging from that dialogue is a fresh appreciation of the self-critical tradition of the theology of the cross.

AbstractExamining the “digital” as a challenge to one of the most traditional spheres of private and public life of Russians, the chapter is focused on institutional aspects of the religion digitalization in the theoretical frame of mediatization. Normatively, digitalization as such does not contradict the dogmatic teaching of any traditional for Russia religion, in Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Buddhism theologically it is being considered as a neutral process with good or bad consequences depending on human will. Therefore, functionally digital technologies are seen by religious institutions as a shaping force, one more facility (channel, tool, space, network) for effective preaching while the core of religious practices still remains based on non-mediated interpersonal communication.

After two introductory comments on why a Jewish perspective on neonatology might matter to anyone but Jews and on the methods of deriving guidance on this very new topic from an ancient tradition that knew nothing of contemporary science, this chapter describes the moral and legal status of the neonate in Jewish law and lore. It then discusses the fundamental Jewish concepts and convictions that underlie care for anyone, including neonates—concepts such as the role of medicine in our lives, the status of the disabled, human mortality, and end-of-life care, including its medical and financial concerns. The chapter then moves to the psychological and emotional aspects of neonatal care, discussing what the Jewish mandate to visit the sick means in the neonatal context and how Jewish mourning rites need to be adjusted to comfort parents of a neonate who dies.

This chapter provides a typology of themes in the Jewish press and discusses Zionism as the most important influence on French Jewish discourse in the 1920s. It explains how Zionism and Jewishness were often equated with values held in high esteem in French society in the Zionist-oriented press. It also explores the idea of the Jew as a 'link' between East and West, which provided a way for Jews to express their difference while simultaneously reinforcing the idea that they formed a vital and necessary element in Western culture. The chapter mentions Zionist advocates in France who remained committed to the idea of Zionism as a secular 'replacement' for a religiously based Jewish identity. It then looks at a common discourse that emphasized the spiritual and religious aspects of Zionist ideology by extending the idea that the visions of Judaism should not be posed in oppositional terms.

Chapter 1 traces the history of the encounter between religion and medicine from the therapeutic cults of the ancients, East and West, to the healing ministry of Christ and to the work and writings of myriad later figures. These include medieval physician-philosophers such as Moses Maimonides, John Wesley and the fathers of the natural hygiene movement, and pioneers of contemporary discourse on religion’s influences on health and healing. This history also involves important figures from Christianity, Judaism, and Islam and from Asian religions and new religious movements. Unpacking this history entails weighing competing narratives about the relations between the institutions of religion and medicine, which at times have been characterized by conflict and at other times by cooperation.

Chapter 5 deals with movements among styles of sacred and secular singing, focusing on the experiences of musicians who have performed across multiple religious contexts. The role of vocality in religious conversion is explored, in the experience of a singer and convert to Judaism. Other aspects of the chapter focus on the concept of intent in spiritual singing practices and the crossing of borders in the neoliberal religious marketplace. The late twentieth-century’s and early twenty-first century’s individualist, even consumerist approach to religion reflects a widespread economic framing of religion, associated with the neoliberal doctrine that also began to flourish then.

Abstract This chapter reviews the many responses of Judaism, in all of its many modern manifestations, to the COVID-19 pandemic. We examine new rulings that allowed a remarkable degree of religious flexibility, even among orthodox Jews, and look for their origins in some of the pandemic responses of the last 500 years. New questions arose about many aspects of Jewish law, like how to run a prayer service, whether teachers should continue to receive a salary, and when to get the COVID-19 vaccine. This chapter also examines how the Conservative and Reform movements addressed the challenge of keeping Jewish practice alive during the pandemic and how COVID-19 affected Judaism in the State of Israel.

Spirituality is a vital element of integrative health and well-being. Research is demonstrating that spiritual and religious beliefs and practices are associated with sleep quality, as they are for many aspects of waking life. This chapter examines literature and clinical approaches to explore questions about the definition of spirituality and religion, how spirituality influences health, how spirituality influences sleep, what can be gleaned from current descriptive and interventional research, and what mechanisms might underlie associations of spirituality with sleep. The authors then present material on approaches to working with spirituality in the practice of integrative medicine and care, touching on the personal groundedness and well-being of clinicians, clinical approaches to supporting meaningful living in patients, and organizational approaches to creating affirming, empowering, and satisfying work environments. The authors also include a short section on spirituality and dreams.
