Abstract (sommario):
Comprehensions of how technology-mediated environments work are marked by a lack of theoretical sophistication about how expertise emerges and develops. Using a practice-based approach to workplace learning and knowing, a case of telecardiological consultation is discussed, where a dedicated call center works by connecting general practitioners (GPs) with remote cardiologists. The service allows GPsto send electrocardiogram traces (ECGs) and discuss the needs of patients with a cardiologist. The role of materials (ECG traces, the recording machine, infrastructure), and communication (synchronous communication in the form of a phone call) are considered in the practical application of the service. It is argued that being an expert telecardiologist entails the ability to align heterogeneous elements, and co-construct, a reliable interpretation of the patient’s situation alongside a doctor. To do that when the situation is not immediately clear, necessitates both doctors discursively mobilize different bio-physiological, chemical, material, social and psychological aspects of a patient’s condition, in order to arrive at a reliable interpretation. Thanks to a practice-based sensitivity, I analyze the case study reading these interactions as competent material-discursive practices.

Abstract (sommario):
Trace elements are essential for several physiological processes. To date, various data have suggested that inadequate levels of trace elements may be involved in the pathogenesis of different chronic diseases, including immune-mediated ones, or may develop during their course. Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a complex autoimmune multisystemic disease, primarily characterized by microvascular dysregulation, the widespread activation of the immune system and tissue fibrosis. According to the latest reports regarding the pathogenesis of SSc, the main pathophysiological processes—inflammation, vasculopathy and fibrosis—may include various trace element derangements. The present literature review aims to update the available data regarding iron, zinc, copper and selenium status in SSc as well as to underline the possible implications of these trace elements in the complexity of the pathogenic process of the disease. We observe that the status of trace elements in SSc plays a crucial role in numerous pathogenic processes, emphasizing the necessity for proper monitoring and supplementation. The reported data are heterogenous and scarce, and future studies are needed in order to draw clearer conclusions about their complete spectrum.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT: This essay argues that the anarchy of Odonian society depends upon the “mediation” afforded by techne . The social organism is a tool that enables Odonians to cultivate reflective relationships on mediation, and hence with each other. Odonian society is a “mediated anarchy.” Shevek’s corrective to the Odonian social organism is to re-center individual existential experience in the use of tools. The essay traces the novel’s roots in debates of determinism and freedom in evolutionary biology and media technologies, borrowing Peter Kropotkin’s anarchist communism. The essay ends with a discussion of the insights Shevek’s philosophy provides into media theory.

Abstract (sommario):
The present work rests and elaborates on the assumption that social technologies are increasingly turned into computer-mediated virtual settlements, thereby allowing the excavation of a variety of enacted cyber-phenomena such as ad hoc online ensembles, informal social networks and virtual communities, on the grounds of ‘digital’ traces or remains. In this vein, the authors motivate and present a method for virtual excavations that is tightly coupled to a transformational technology such as knowledge visualization. The analytical and explanatory value of the method is assessed using two case studies addressing representative genres of social technologies, namely web sites augmented with social plug-ins and social networking services. Analysis reveals intrinsic aspects of ‘digital’ traces and remains, the form they take in today’s social web and the means through which they can be excavated and transformed to useful information. It turns out that such virtual excavations, when organized and conducted carefully, can be of benefit to enterprises, service organizations and public sector institutions. In addition, their tight coupling with knowledge visualization eliminates extensive data analysis as much of this work can be done using the visualization. On the other hand, and depending on the size of digital trace data, the choice of visualizations and the underlying toolkit are of paramount importance.

Abstract (sommario):
Mild thermolysis of the tetracyclic mesylate (6) in the presence of traces of mineral acid afforded a mixture of the rearrangement products (21) and (22) as well the σ-anti- bishomotetralin (20). On treatment with methanesulfonic acid in dichloromethane, compound (20) gives rise to the [5.4.1] propellene (21) which, on prolonged exposure to these reaction conditions, isomerizes to the mesyloxymethyl compound (22). Under the same conditions, the σ-anti- bishomoindan (4) is converted into the [5.3.1] propellene (3) which, in turn, slowly rearranges to the [4.3.1] propellene (23). A mechanistic rationalization of these observations is advanced which also accounts for the formation of the novel by-product (16) observed during Simmons-Smith cyclopropanation of allylic alcohol (15a).

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Sea turtles are characterized by a wide variety of invertebrate ectoparasites. Few of these ectoparasites leave a permanent indication of their presence on the skeletal remains of their host taxa and thus represent ecological information doomed to be lost in the paleontological record. Some barnacle taxa provide an exception to this, in that they cause the formation of small, subcircular to circular divots, pits, and holes on the skull, mandible, carapace or plastron of sea turtles. Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta) skeletons from Cumberland Island, Georgia, USA were examined to assess the presence, frequency, and loci of occurrence of barnacle pits, and to establish which taxa are involved in pit development. Six types of divot and pit attributed to barnacles are identified in this study. Type I traces are shallow, oval/semi-circular in outline, with smooth, gently sloped bases. Type II traces are deep, hemispherical pits with smooth bases. Type III traces are deep, circular to subcircular pits with flat bases. Type IV traces are deep, circular to subcircular pits with multiple (4–6) small sub-pits on their bases. Type V traces are cylindrical, penetrative holes. Type VI traces comprise shallow ring-shaped grooves on the surface of the bone. Type I through III traces are identical to the ichnotaxon Karethraichnus lakkos. Type IV traces have not, as yet, been described in the rock record. Type V traces are identical to K. fiale. Type VI traces are identical to Thatchtelithichnus holmani. Barnacle taxa identified as emplacing non-penetrative divots and pits on C. caretta skulls, mandibles, and shell bones include Chelonibia caretta (Type I), Platylepas hexastylos (Types I–IV), Calyptolepas bjorndalae (Types I and II), and Stomatolepas elegans (Types I and II). Type V traces were most likely emplaced by either Stephanolepas muricata or Chelolepas cheloniae. Type VI traces reflect the former attachment of balanid or lepadid barnacles. Embedded barnacles were observed in epidermal material associated with Types I through IV traces but not for Type V and VI traces and thus the relationship is inferred for these latter traces. Barnacle-related pits, divots, and holes are believed to result from barnacle mediated chemical corrosion into the outer surface of sea turtle bone. The occurrence of these traces provides one of the few preservable lines of evidence of barnacle interactions with sea turtle hosts. Identification of definitive barnacle borings in fossil material will provide evidence of the evolution of platylepadid barnacles and the development of their commensal relationship with chelonid turtles.

Abstract (sommario):
In this study, we analysed the effect of human-mediated selection on the gene pool of wild and farmed red deer populations based on genotyping-by-sequencing data. The farmed red deer sample covered populations spread across seven countries and two continents (France, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, New Zealand, Poland, and Slovakia). The Slovak and Spain wild red deer populations (the latter one in a large game estate) were used as control outgroups. The gene flow intensity, relationship and admixture among populations were tested by the Bayesian approach and discriminant analysis of principal components (DAPC). The highest gene diversity (He = 0.19) and the lowest genomic inbreeding (FHOM = 0.04) found in Slovak wild population confirmed our hypothesis that artificial selection accompanied by bottlenecks has led to the increase in overall genomic homozygosity. The Bayesian approach and DAPC consistently identified three separate genetic groups. As expected, the farmed populations were clustered together, while the Slovak and Spanish populations formed two separate clusters. Identified traces of genetic admixture in the gene pool of farmed populations reflected a strong contemporary migration rate between them. This study suggests that even if the history of deer farming has been shorter than traditional livestock species, it may leave significant traces in the genome structure.

Abstract (sommario):
The goal of Learning Analytics is to understand and improve learning. However, learning does not always occur through or mediated by a technological system that can collect digital traces. To be able to study learning in non-technology centered environments, several signals, such as video and audio, should be captured, processed and analyzed to produce traces of the actions and interactions of the actors of the learning process. The use and integration of the different modalities present in those signals is known as Multimodal Learning Analytics. This editorial presents a brief introduction to this new variation of Learning Analytics and summarizes the four representative articles included in this special issue. The editorial closes with a small discussion about the current opportunities and challenges in multimodal learning analytics.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is situated within the framework of knowledge engineering; it is particularly interested in the redocumentation of the computermediated activity from traces files. We suppose that during such a process, a user interprets and rewrites traces in a new document that corresponds to a particular genre and describes the traced activity in détails ; all this via the possibility to rewrite traces content, to enrich this content with other information (justifications or information on the context), to delete parts from it, etc. Therefore, we strengthen the documentary status of traces according to the three dimensions of legibility, comprehensibility and exchange. For implementing such a process, we propose a generic semi-automatic approach which combines the content of activity traces with users knowledge in narrative forms, easily exchangeable, to describe the traced activity in a personalized way for users. This Approach uses formal models for traces and documents (produced), as well as principles of the rhetorical structure theory (RST). It supports the redocumentation process through two phases: an automatic phase to generate an initial fragmented document from traces as a first description of the activity and an interactive phase to personalize this description according to the user needs and choices so that to produce an easily exchangeable document. We also propose a specification of this approach for the particular case of redocumentation by text and we present ActRedoc, an authoring tool that we developed by using different technologies of the Semantic Web in order to implement this specific approach. The results of our work were tested in a real environment which concerns redocumenting the activity of browsing a site of archives of newspapers of the XIXth century developed by the municipal library of Lyon. Thus, we present a first evaluation of the approach of redocumentation by text and of the authoring tool ActRedoc by a group of users

Abstract (sommario):
This PhD thesis, based by the European Open-Access (OA) project, explores the relationships between artistic creation and transmediation within the field of Information and Communication Sciences (ICS). The OA project aims to examine the intersection between performing arts and transmedia practices, aligning with the priorities of developing digital skills and enhancing public engagement. This action-research/creation was initiated to document and present the work of eight artists. This dual approach allowed immersion in the creative process and deepened the understanding of art in the making: poietics. The concept of diegesis, originating from Etienne Souriau's approach to film studies, played a central role in structuring the capture and reproduction protocol. It frames the project as a diegetic macro-system, a coherent universe where individual and collective realities of the participants converge. To capture these interactions, the adopted approach seeks to maximize the typology of mediated traces by combining standard sociotechnical devices in ICS, such as semi-structured interviews, with experimental devices. This diversity of traces enables the integration of potential or unforeseen dialogical connections within the corpus, thereby opening up new perspectives for the analysis and understanding of creative and media dynamics.Supported by an experimental restitution prototype, the Webdocmooc, as well as several demonstrators, including a transmodal sequence generator, an audio-visual sequence generator from interview transcripts, and a faceted search engine, this work highlights the potential offered by a diegetic approach in the field of ICS. It introduces new indicators and perspectives for the analysis and restitution of creative and media processes, expanding the documentary field to complex informational relationships. This represents an opportunity not only for the researcher in relation to their subject of study, but also for the user interacting with documentary restitution devices

Abstract (sommario):
Plant growth is seriously limited by heavy metal toxicity. Studies suggest that silicon (Si) can alleviate the metal stress in plants but its bioavailability in soil is not well defined. This study aims at assessing the bioavailability of Si from different soil minerals, the meaning of various extractants in terms of availability in relation with continuous plant uptake, and the specific role of Si on the plant growth and alleviation of cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) toxicity in durum wheat. For this purpose a series of experiments were performed both in soil and hydroponic conditions. Firstly, the significance of acid and alkaline methods was assessed in order to determine the bioavailable Si in soil and the applicability of the Na2CO3 extraction method was determined by repeated croppings of durum wheat on a variety of soils. Secondly, two hydroponic experiments were carried out to study the physiological response of wheat under Cd and Cu stress treated or not with Si. Thirdly, efficiency of different minerals to release bioavailable silica and its effect on reducing Cd and Cu toxicity was assessed. Finally, the effects of amorphous silica (ASi) application were investigated on metal stressed wheat plant grown in uncontaminated and contaminated soils. ASi extracted with Na2CO3 (ASiNa) was well correlated with the Si in plants shoots in our pot experiment with different soils. We showed that ASiNa can also be used for a good proxy of Si bioavailable to plants. Si present as amorphous Si (diatomite) added to the soil is available for plant uptake. However, in soils with large clay content, clay may be a significant source of Si for plants

Abstract (sommario):
Lung transplantation is the only therapeutic approach for patients presenting end-stage pulmonary failure. Despite progress made in organ preservation and immunosuppression, primary graft dysfunction and obliterative bronchiolitis still hamper short-term and long-term outcomes, respectively. Interleukin-17 recently emerged as a major actor in several immuno-inflammatory disorders. Clinical and experimental evidence also suggest the implication of interleukin-17 or type 17 CD4+ T cells in lung rejection. We therefore investigated the contribution of this cytokine to graft pathology in a murine model of tracheal transplantation that recapitulates pathological features of lung rejection including the development of obliterative airway disease.

We first demonstrated that interleukin-17 contributes to inflammatory lesions in the early phase post-transplantation. Interleukin-17 was found to be produced by &61543;&61540;+ T cells and CD4+ T cells infiltrating the graft and interleukin-17 neutralization significantly reduced the development of epithelial lesions together with inhibition of interleukin-6 and heat-shock-protein 70 gene transcription.

We then investigated the contribution of interleukin-17 to obliterative airway disease. Although interleukin-17 did not play a dominant role in absence of immunosuppression, it was found to contribute to airway pathology in animals receiving cyclosporin A. Under this treatment, we first observed dramatic changes in the composition of the lymphocyte populations infiltrating the graft: the numbers of CD8+ T cells producing interferon-&61543; and type 1 CD4+ T cells were dramatically decreased while the numbers of type 17, and also type 2 CD4+ T cells were unaffected. The pathological relevance of these findings was first demonstrated by the prolongation of graft survival afforded by the depletion of CD4+ T cells in cyclosporin A-treated animals. Furthermore, graft rejection was also delayed in mice genetically deficient in either interleukin-17 or interleukin-4, providing evidence that type 17 and type 2 CD4+ T cells actively contribute to graft rejection in cyclosporin A-treated recipients. On the other hand, parallel experiments in interferon-&61543;-deficient mice revealed that interferon-&

Reflecting Jerusalem in the Medieval Czech Lands maps the reception, reflection, and translation of Jerusalem in medieval Czech lands. The volume deals with Jerusalem as an idea and traces it not only in time but in various forms of art as well - such as architecture, book and wall-painting, and different literary genres - with the aim of covering the whole spectrum of Jerusalem images in medieval Czech lands. Special attention is paid to the interim period, when the Czech lands “lost” direct contact with the Holy Land and the idea of Jerusalem was mediated through Western European and Italian sources.

Doctor Who is a BBC transmedia franchise that has lasted over sixty years. Its fanbase boasts a substantial following of gay men. This book asks why this should be. Through examining four core components – the Doctor, the TARDIS, the companion and the Daleks – this book traces the trajectory of queerness from wider culture to paratextual media and finally into the parent text, resulting in an inclusive brand. In doing so, it argues that fandom provides a space to mediate between personal identities and the wider world. Drawing from interviews with fans, the book demonstrates the complexities and contradictions of queerness, and proposes an alternative theory of gay cultural formation. This is the first book-length study to use queer theory to understand Doctor Who. It will be of interest to students and teachers of media theory and fan studies, psychosocial studies, queer theory and history, as well as Doctor Who fans.

Abstract (sommario):
Across the Chinese borderlands, investments in large-scale transnational infrastructure such as roads and special economic zones have increased exponentially over the past two decades. Based on long-term ethnographic research, Borderland Infrastructures addresses a major contradiction at the heart of this fast-paced development: small-scale traders have lost their historic strategic advantages under the growth of massive Chinese state investment and are now struggling to keep their businesses afloat. Concurrently, local ethnic minorities have become the target of radical resettlement projects, securitization, and tourism initiatives, and have in many cases grown increasingly dependent on state subsidies. At the juncture of anthropological explorations of the state, border studies, and research on transnational trade and infrastructure development, Borderland Infrastructures provides new analytical tools to understand how state power is experienced, mediated, and enacted in Xinjiang and Yunnan. In the process, Rippa offers a rich and nuanced ethnography of life across China’s peripheries.

Carlson, Amy. Reading Mediated Life Narratives. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350324695.

Abstract (sommario):
Calling attention to the unseen mediation and re-mediation of life narratives in online and physical spaces, this ground-breaking exploration uncovers the ever-changing strategies that authors, artists, publishers, curators, archivists and social media corporations adopt to shape, control or resist the auto/biographical in these texts. Concentrating on contemporary life texts found in the material book, museums, on social media and archives that present perceptions of individuality and autonomy, Reading Mediated Life Narratives exposes the traces of personal, cultural, technological, and political mediation that must be considered when developing reading strategies for such life narratives. Amy Carlson asks such questions as what agents act upon these narratives; what do the text, the creator, and the audience gain, and what do they lose; how do constantly evolving technologies shape or stymie the auto/biographical “I”; and finally, how do the mediations affect larger issues of social and collective memory? An examination of the range of sites at which vulnerability and intervention can occur, Carlson does not condemn but stages an intercession, showing us how it is increasingly necessary to register mediated agents and processes modifying the witnessing or recuperation of original texts that could condition our reception. With careful thought on how we remember, how we create and control our pictures, voices, words, and records, Reading Mediated Life Narratives reveals how we construct and negotiate our social identities and memories, but also what systems control us.

Abstract (sommario):
Chapter 6 focuses on a well-known case of conflict surrounding a film’s music: the beloved 1934 film L’Atalante. The second collaboration between experimental filmmaker Jean Vigo and film composer Maurice Jaubert, L’Atalante had a disastrous initial release. In an attempt to make the film more broadly accessible, the producers edited the film substantially, replacing parts of Jaubert’s score with the popular song “Le Chaland qui passe.” In altering the soundtrack, they altered an important narrative subtext: a reflexive fixation on synchronized sound film, expressed through a focus on the magic of musical playback technologies. This chapter traces the differences between the two versions of L’Atalante, arguing that Vigo’s fascination with mediated music, and the producers’ attempt to fit the film’s music into a commercially successful paradigm, reflects continuing concerns from both sides about how mediated sound would affect French cinema in the mid-1930s.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter tracks the global circulation of gospel music, a movement enabled in part by the transnational record industry, noting in particular the ways some audiences in the African Diaspora receive and participate in the music in continuity with African American religious practice in the United States. A key interest is the way gospel music reflects religiosity and cultural experience and the transformations that can disrupt the link between these elements in global performances. The chapter traces performances and historical moments that show an encounter with the global in the careers of pioneering gospel performers, including Mahalia Jackson and Rosetta Tharpe. It then describes and analyzes the author’s experience as “performer and culture bearer” of gospel music in two transnational sites: collaborative performances in Malawi and Cuba. The author concludes that the comprehensive integrity of gospel music is presented most coherently when the music is mediated through the lens of both cultural and religious identity.

Abstract (sommario):
This work is an exploration of possible experiential traces of Orthodox Christian ontology and soteriology in the healing of the psyche as known and experienced through depth psychology. It explores a possible relationship between theology and depth psychology as mediated through a lens of the sacramentality of creation. Using a variety of patristic soteriological images, all of which converge around the central theme of “that which is not assumed is not healed,” it then goes on to offer a possible psychological exegesis of that key patristic maxim, seeking to understand how this might be experienced psychologically. This is done through the lens of the assumption of being qua being as explored through insights into the natural healing impetus of the psyche qua psyche. The exploration then turns to the ontological energies of eros, desire, and will and looks for traces of the assumption of eros in psychological healing, as seen primarily through the lens of object-relations theory.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractIndividuals and groups leave evidence of their lives when they are engaged in their activities. In this way, they create a rich amount of material that tells us about their behaviours, opinions and values. This material is not created for research purposes and is different from that solicited by researchers. In recent decades, the spread of new communication technologies has amplified the possibility of creating and disseminating this kind of data outside the research context. In this chapter, what people leave behind (WPLB) online is studied from a strictly methodological point of view. What kind of evidence are researchers dealing with? Is it possible to reconnect it with the traditional methodological framework? We suggest that data left behind by people and groups on the Internet should be divided into three different categories: online found data (digital traces), online retrieved data (web-mediated documents) and online captured data (online behaviours). The phase of contextualization proves essential in understanding the very nature of (online) data. This work leads to rediscovering the potential of classical methodological tools such as simple observation, documentary analysis and trace analysis. These practices provide methodological value to research projects that analyse WPLB in physical and web-mediated environments.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractContemporary society is an “informational” or “networked” society, actualized by individuals engaging in communication processes that take place in online social networks. While interpreting “traces” as “documents in archives (which) for the most part come from witnesses in spite of themselves” ((Ricoeur, Memory, history, forgetting. University of Chicago Press, 2009: 171), we will explore how the users of virtual communities consider and use these traces in different ways than originally intended, thus acquiring different meanings. In specific, we will focus on two research questions in this chapter: (1) What are the features of the information that are left unintentionally by the users of virtual communities? and (2) What is the role of such unintentional information in virtual communities? In order to answer these research questions, we use data gathered by means of 49 semi-structured qualitative interviews (see Agostini & Mechant, International Journal Of Electrical, Electronics And Data Communication (IJEEDC) 3:19–23, 2015). Results show how the members of virtual communities play an active role in decoding “traces” as they rely on their own social contexts and are capable of changing messages themselves through collective action. We also demonstrate that sense of community is mediated by community awareness and that the regular exchange of information has a positive effect on the different dimensions that support sense of community.

Abstract (sommario):
Ramírez-Blanco reads the complex representations of the “natural” realm that have taken place during those times in which people felt further than ever from other forms of life, human or non-human. Confinement in many cities gave rise to empty streets, and vacant buildings, creating images of uncanny beauty that can be perceived as a kind of “pandemic sublime”. However, many people trapped at home became ever more nostalgic for an idealized nature, perceived through their computers and phones, and which mediated in different fictionalized or direct ways with the non-human realm. Through videos, phone calls with non-human animals, or even a “back to the land” movement after confinement, this chapter traces how the “pandemic sublime” has lead to the construction of what can be termed a “pandemic pastoral”. The author makes clear how, in its sentimental and non-ideological dimensions, this imaginary needs to be politicized if we want to respond to the next global emergency: that of present climate change and environmental destruction which led to the pandemic in the first place.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe Victorian railway network of technologies and associated practices was a prime site of secularization. A secular time independent of motion was the condition of possibility underpinning railway travellers’ ability to negotiate timetables formally locating all spaces within the same temporal grid, or to engage in conducts allowing their bodies to be relatively at rest while in transit. The electric telegraph helped towards expanding this temporal grid on a national scale, enveloping the entire national (eventually imperial) territory as an increasingly temporally synchronized whole. In this way, and to the degree that it succeeded in moving human bodies without deterioration, the Victorian railway network mediated secular time.

AbstractThe study of culture in media or mediated culture—referred to here as the study of cultural coverage—often makes use of content analysis to build up a more systematized knowledge of possibly evolving patterns that can only be observed by gathering certain amounts of data over a certain period of time. Typically, content analysis is employed to trace the anatomy of the mediated culture, either as hierarchies of artistic forms or of as a representation of a specific cultural phenomenon. Content analysis is also applied to identify the mechanisms of mediation and follow their evolution over time, i.e., cultural change.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper we introduce a quasi-experimental methodology to assess the benefits of an entrepreneurial learning program, based on LinkedIn profile data. We compare the career paths of two cohorts of participants in the mentoring sessions of the Innovation Labs pre-accelerator, compared with a control group formed by persons of similar age and entrepreneurial interest who did not benefit from the added value of the mentorship program. We appraise the advantages and limitations of studying online traces of professional identity in LinkedIn public profiles. We discuss how a content analysis of LinkedIn public profiles illuminates the impact of Innovation Labs as a significant learning experience. In this sense, we present our proposed quasi-experimental method in terms of: (1) objectivity: digitally mediated factuality as a product of design; (2) narrativity: modes of subjectification through self-making practices; (3) sociality: social relations, systems of acknowledgment, and reputation building processes; (4) performativity: the role of digital traces and online inscriptions in reality construction. In order to assess the learning benefits of Innovation Labs, we take into consideration various forms of capital which are circulated on the participants’ profiles, and we reflect on processes through which social capital is converted into symbolic resources, intellectual assets and career horizons. We also explore how participation in the program is framed and described, on LinkedIn public profiles, as a significant experience in one’s professional development. Therefore, our study is significant not only in refining impact evaluation theory and research, but also in understanding how technology shapes our knowledge of the professional world, with practical implications on developing effective strategies of professional self-presentation and reputation consolidation.

Abstract (sommario):
Value-based frameworks are widely used to guide the design of algorithms, yet their influence in mediating users’ perception and use of algorithm-driven technologies is vastly understudied. Moreover, there is a need to move research beyond a focus on human-algorithm interaction to account for how the values these frameworks promote – algorithmic values – become socialised outside the boundaries of the (human-algorithm) interaction and how they influence everyday practices that are not algorithmically mediated. This paper traces the entanglement of algorithmic values and everyday life by mapping how residents of the Salvadorian town of El Zonte perceive the top-down transition of the town into "Bitcoin Beach" through value-driven transformations to diverse aspects of their material culture and built environment. This approach advances empirical research on the impact of algorithms by acknowledging the myriad ways in which those who won’t or can’t (afford to) interact with algorithm-driven technologies are impacted by the value-based outcomes of their programming and provides novel insights for critically examining the role of algorithm-driven technologies in shaping sustainable futures.

Abstract (sommario):
People develop their identities and self-knowledge through constant presentation of self in situations of everyday interaction. In this paper we study strategies of learning about self and society through participation in the online dating platform Tinder, and in digital communities dedicated to collective reflection on this experience. Through an exploratory research based on observation and on content analysis on several online platforms, we identify stages of learning on a social trajectory from novice to methodical and to expert participant, and we illustrate how learning about one's self involves at the same time learning about others and the medium of interaction in which presentation and validation take place. As Erving Goffman demonstrated, the presentation of self in everyday life is a highly organized activity in which people pursue others' validation. Invalidation can be painful and humiliating, possibly leading to degradation of one's status and to specific coping mechanisms. The increasing frequency of self-presentation in digitally mediated situations introduces novel processes in how people learn about themselves and others. Building a profile, seeking validation in the form of "likes" or "followers" or swipes to the right on Tinder, dealing with rejection when validation fails to materialize in the expected form or quantity, have become common activities for people across generations. Correspondingly, people ask for and give advice as to how to best present oneself and how to deal with rejection, on blogs, forums, Q&A platforms, books and other media. Technologically mediated interaction leads to metric forms of validation, as users count the likes and matches they receive and optimize self-presentations to achieve desired numbers, among others. Digital platforms also make possible the gathering of digital traces about oneself and others and the interpretation of data - from personal self-tracking to wider exercises of observation and analysis of communities. People who are active on Tinder learn how to interpret profiles and numbers that are specific to this platform, how to react when metrics are disappointing and how to fine tune their self-presentation. Knowledge about oneself is intimately related to knowledge about the digital platform mechanisms, its incentives and mechanics, and to knowledge about other users' strategies. We illustrate how Tinder encourages reflexivity about one's dating skills and erotic capital while at the same time encouraging a systemic understanding of online dating as a social game with specific technological incentives, that continuously change the field of intimate interaction.

Abstract (sommario):
Ateriod obtained from beef mucosal lining is a sulfomuco-polysaccharide mixture of various glycosaminoglycans which contains derma tans, heparatans and traces of heparin. It has been used in the treatment ofatherosclerosis and related vaso-oclusive disorders. Ateriod is standardized in terms of its lipoprotein lipase activation actions. Ateriod contains signfi-cant in vitro anticoagulant and antiprotease (anti-factor Xa and anti-factor Ila) activities as measured by clot-based and chromr ogenic substrate methods. However, this in vitro activity is 7-10 times lesser than heparin. In order to study the antithrombotic actions of this agent in subcutaneous, intravenous and oral routes, we utilized a rabbit stasis thrombosis model with a prothrombin complex concentrate/Russell's viper venom thrombogenic challenge and prolonged stasis. The apparent ED50 for the antithrombotic action were found to be: IV (75-100 ug/ kg), SC (0.8-1.3 mg/kg) and oral (20-30 mg/kg). In both the IV- and SC studies, sustained anticoagulant and antiprotease actions were evident. The observed antithrombotic actions did not relate to the anti-factor IIa or anti-factor Xa actions. Pretreatment of Ateriod with equigravimetric amounts of protamine and platelet factor 4 did not neutralize the antithrombotic actions of this agent in the rabbit model. In a primate (Macaca mulatta) model of pharmacokinetics, ex vivo analysis following subcutaneously administered Ateriod showed sustained anticoagulant and antiprotease effects. The time course of the subcutaneously administered Ateriod was markedly different than heparin and a low molecular weight heparin. Treated animals were shown to resist induced hypercoagulability following injection of homologous serum as measured by FPA generation for extended periods. These studies suggest that Ateriod produces a strong antithrombotic action and that it has highly sustained pharmacokinetics. The antithrombotic activity appears to be primarily mediated via non-antithrombin - HI dependent events which may be related to heparin cofactor II and vascular/ cellular modifications.

Abstract (sommario):
A telemanipulation system allows a human user to manipulate a remote environment using a local interface (master robot) to control a remote (slave) robot. In doing so, it is desirable to provide users with appropriate sensory feedback, most often taking the form of visual and force information. In the presence of communication delays, however, a force feedback telemanipulation system must overcome detrimental effects caused by the delay, both on the quality of feedback to the user and the stability of the control system. For large delays, like those experienced in space telerobotics, the user's perceptive abilities are distorted and challenged by the lag between action and response. With this paper, a user-centered approach is proposed which seeks to simultaneously provide stable master-slave interaction as well as a natural user experience, tolerant of large delays. Rather than directly sending sensory information from the slave robot to the user, the goal is to use this information to create a real-time virtual model of the remote environment, which then serves as the user's interface. Maintaining a dynamic, virtual model locally at the master-side, the user is provided with immediate visual and haptic responses to his/her actions through the master device. At the remote site, the slave robot tracks the user's continuous and natural motion commands, while providing new information needed to update the virtual model. This method abstracts the data transmitted between the sites and creates greater delay tolerance. The basic principles of the approach are demonstrated on a simple one-degree of freedom telerobotic system, with a rigid, stationary slave environment.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Monoecious species such as melon and cucumber develop separate male and female (or bisexual) flowers on the same plant individual. They display complex genetic and hormonal regulation of sex patterns along the plant. Ethylene is known to play an important role in promoting femaleness and inhibiting male development, but many questions regarding critical sites of ethylene production versus perception, the relationship between ethylene and the sex determining loci, and the possible differences between melon and cucumber in this respect are still open. The general goal of the project was to elucidate the role of ethylene in determining flower sex in Cucumis species, melon and cucumber. The specific Objectives were: 1. Clone and characterize expression patterns of cucumber genes involved in ethylene biosynthesis and perception. 2. Genetic mapping of cloned genes and markers with respect to sex loci in melon and cucumber. 3. Produce and analyze transgenic melons altered in ethylene production or perception. In the course of the project, some modifications/adjustments were made: under Objective 2 (genetic mapping) a set of new mapping populations had to be developed, to allow better detection of polymorphism. Under Objective 3, cucumber transformation systems became available to us and we included this second model species in our plan. The main findings of our study support the pivotal role of ethylene in cucumber and melon sex determination and later stages of reproductive development. Modifying ethylene production resulted in profound alteration of sex patterns in melon: femaleness increased, and also flower maturation and fruit set were enhanced, resulting in earlier, more concentrated fruit yield in the field. Such effect was previously unknown and could have agronomic value. Our results also demonstrate the great importance of ethylene sensitivity in sex expression. Ethylene perception genes are expressed in sex-related patterns, e.g., gynoecious lines express higher levels of receptor-transcripts, and copper treatments that activate the receptor can increase femaleness. Transgenic cucumbers with increased expression of an ethylene receptor showed enhanced femaleness. Melons that expressed a defective receptor produced fewer hermaphrodite flowers and were insensitive to exogenous ethylene. When the expression of defective receptor was restricted to specific floral whorls, we saw that pistils were not inhibited by the blocked perception at the fourth whorl. Such unexpected findings suggest an indirect effect of ethylene on the affected whorl; it also points at interesting differences between melon and cucumber regarding the mode of action of ethylene. Such effects will require further study. Finally, our project also generated and tested a set of novel genetic tools for finer identification of sex determining genes in the two species and for efficient breeding for these characters. Populations that will allow easier linkage analysis of candidate genes with each sex locus were developed. Moreover, effects of modifier genes on the major femaleness trait were resolved. QTL analysis of femaleness and related developmental traits was conducted, and a comprehensive set of Near Isogenic Lines that differ in specific QTLs were prepared and made available for the private and public research. Marker assisted selection (MAS) of femaleness and fruit yield components was directly compared with phenotypic selection in field trials, and the relative efficiency of MAS was demonstrated. Such level of genetic resolution and such advanced tools were not used before to study these traits, that act as primary yield components to determine economic yields of cucurbits. In addition, this project resulted in the establishment of workable transformation procedures in our laboratories and these can be further utilized to study the function of sex-related genes in detail.

Abstract (sommario):
The goal of our BARD proposal was to build both the necessary infrastructure and knowledge for using the CRISPR/Cas9-based gene drive system to control the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. Our research focused on achieving three main goals: (1) establishing a CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing system for producing genetically-edited B. tabaci; (2) generating and testing CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutations targeting genes that represent two gene drive strategies: population replacement and population suppression; (3) using computer modeling to optimize strategies for applying CRISPR/Cas9 to control B. tabaci populations in the field. CRISPR gene drive is one of the most promising strategies for diminishing the negative impacts of harmful insects. This technique can introduce mutations into wild populations of pests that reduce their ability to cause damage, reduce their population size, or both. In principle, this can be selfsustaining because mutations carried by relatively few insects can increase in frequency and spread quickly throughout wild populations. Because of this sustainability and the potential benefits to society, agricultural gene-drive systems are most likely to be funded by government agencies, foundations, and grower associations; as with sterile insect releases and most biocontrol programs. Although gene drives have received intensive study in Drosophila and mosquito vectors of human disease, we were one of the first teams pursuing this approach for crop pests. Our project was also one of the first to address CRISPR gene drive in the Hemiptera, an insect order that includes hundreds of pest species. We focused on developing and implementing CRISPR gene drive to reduce the massive damage caused by B. tabaci. This haplodiploid insect is one of the world's most devastating crop pests. Whereas extensive work by others explored CRISPR in diploid species, our project pioneered application of this revolutionary technology to haplodiploids, which have a distinct system of inheritance that presents special challenges and opportunities. Our project has achieved several breakthroughs, including publication of the first paper analyzing CRISPR gene drive in haplodiploids (Li et al. 2020, see next section). Our modeling results from this landmark study demonstrate that CRISPR gene drive can work in haplodiploids, especially if fitness costs associated with the driver allele are low or nil. Our paper was the first to provide a conceptual framework for evaluating and optimizing CRISPR gene drive strategies for managing B. tabaci and other haplodiploid pests. Our breakthroughs in the laboratory have created the infrastructure needed to develop CRISPR for controlling B. tabaci. We established a microinjection system enabling us to introduce CRISPR-derived mutations into B. tabaci embryos. We have used this system to generate and track inherited eye-color mutants of B. tabaci. We have identified and cloned germline promoters, and demonstrated their function in transgenic B. tabaci embryos and other hemipteran insects. We have also developed a tool to easily identify B. tabaci harboring CRISPR-mediated mutations by tagging target genes using a transgenic fluorescent marker. The successful completion of our project provides all the knowledge and infrastructure essential for developing a novel genetic approach for B. tabaci control, which can serve as a non-chemical "green" alternative for managing this global pest. We predict that our discoveries will accelerate the development of the CRISPR gene drive technique for reducing the numbers of this pest and the damage it causes. Still, realization of the benefits of gene-drive technology for pest control will require sustained attention to potential environmental and societal impacts, as well as regulatory and implementation challenges. Given the great promise of this technology and the urgent need for better control methods, we expect that guidance documents and regulations will be in place to allow the scientific community to safely move gene drives for pest control from the laboratory to field trials.

Abstract (sommario):
The literature has identified that countries with higher levels of openness tend to present a larger government sector as a way to reduce the risks to the economy that openness entails. This paper argues that there are a number of policies that can mitigate trade-induced risks, many of which do not have the necessary implication of increasing public spending. Yet, many such policies require governmental capabilities not available to any country. For that reason, the relationship between openness and the size of government might be mediated by the quality of its public sector. While countries with weak government capabilities will tend to rely on spending expansions to deal with trade-induced volatility, countries with stronger governmental capabilities might address such challenges by more efficient and less costly means. The empirical analysis in this paper shows that the effect of openness on government consumption is mediated by the quality of government institutions.

Abstract (sommario):

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
