Abstract (sommario):
Email communication has become an integral part of the communication structure within organisations, but the problems it can cause are rarely assessed. The defects associated with email, which are related to both the quantity and the quality of email need to be understood by employees for them to become more effective users of email. Email training within organisations tends to focus on how to use email as a software package, without looking at when it is appropriate to use email and how to get your message across effectively. This thesis first explores email defects and how they impact on organisations.

Abrahams, Rifqah. "Social media as a means of communication with external stakeholders". Thesis, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11838/2314.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MTech (Public Relations Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2011.
This research focuses on whether social media is an effective means of communication to external stakeholders and investigates communication between Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) to its student-stakeholder group on four levels of interaction; namely institution, faculty, department and subjects. It provides answers to the questions, "How does CPUT communicate to students?" "What is the CPUT student-stakeholder's preferred method of communication?" and "What content does the CPUT student-stakeholder want to hear about?" to answer the bigger question, "Is social media an effective means of communication to CPUT students?" Using a conceptual framework based on Edward Freeman's work on stakeholder communication and Grunig's communication theory, the research considers the role that social media could play in the communication mix; whether CPUT should communicate to students using a medium on which they are already active; as well as what is/are an appropriate method/s of communication to reach student-stakeholders. Findings include the students' perception of social media as well as the state of communication from CPUT to the students and the platform/s the student-stakeholder would prefer. Further research is recommended to consider the use of a mobile platform for communication to students.

Abstract (sommario):
The mass adoption of smartphones has led to a huge demand for wireless services, and 5G mobile is expected to deliver a 1000 fold capacity increase over the coming decade. However, this increase in demand will not been accompanied by a corresponding increase in the spectrum allocated for mobile networks, and therefore significant technological advances . will be required in order to reach this goal. Furthermore, due to the fragmented availability of spectrum globally, the number of frequency bands in use around the globe continues to increase, and thus a tunable radio frequency front end is required to enable roaming and cost effective manufacture. Duplexing techniques based on self-interference cancellation can increase spectral efficiency by enabling simultaneous transmission and reception on the same frequency, and have the potential to replace fixed frequency duplexing filters to create a tunable radio frequency front end. This thesis investigates self-interference cancellation technologies in the context of frequency division and division free duplexing in future mobile devices. The focus of this thesis is the Electrical Balance Duplexer (EBD), which implements a form of self-interference cancellation to provide high transmit-to-receive (Tx-Rx) isolation whilst allowing simultaneous transmission and reception through a single antenna. This contribution offers several advancements concerning the design and operation of the EBD, placing emphasis on investigating practical issues that may affect the suitability and performance of this circuit in mobile device applications. The results and analysis presented in this thesis have demonstrated that time-domain and frequency domain antenna impedance variation can have a substantial impact on the Tx-Rx isolation achieved by the EBD. A realistic evaluation of EBD isolation bandwidth is presented, and a novel method for maximising isolation is proposed. It is shown that circuit adaptation is required to mitigate time-domain antenna impedance variation which arises due to environmental interaction, and requirements for antenna impedance tracking in user interaction and indoor mobile scenarios are determined. A novel EBD circuit architecture combining passive and active cancellation methods is proposed and implemented in hardware, demonstrating a substantial improvement by providing >80 dB of isolation over an 80 MHz bandwidth. This thesis also presents an in-depth theoretical analysis of self-interference coupling in non-ideal EBDs, and from this derives a novel circuit adaptation algorithm which can achieve the required accuracy but is orders of magnitude faster and computationally less expensive than existing methods. It can be concluded that the EBD is a promising candidate technology for implementing tunable duplexing functionality in mobile devices, and that the environmental effects and non-ideal circuit characteristics which are typical of this application can be successfully mitigated.

Architects are trained and practiced in the means and methods of design. These are distinct from the physical means and methods of construction, which have traditionally been in the hands of contractors. The successful realization of construction does not necessitate or rely on a direct link between the processes of design and construction. However, the constructibility of a design is dependent on an effective means of communicating between the two. This thesis illustrates that the perceived complexity of constructibility is often predicated on the efficacy of communication between the designer and the contractor. I present three models of communication: a linear transmissive model similar to that of Shannon and Weaver, a "speech-circuit" model based on that of Saussure, and a semiotic-constructionist model derived from Peirce and Papert. Through interviews, observations, and experiments with practicing architects and architecture students, I investigate the implications of these models on the perceived and contractual roles and responsibilities of architects and contractors. My findings suggest that in design, communication is also an act of design and construction. Best illustrated by the constructionist model of communication, acts of making and re-making are fundamental to the way that architects and contractors relate to design information. The automation of these acts through emerging technologies - such as BIM - lead to increased reliance on fixed data constructs in lieu of dynamic, individual interpretations of information. This can result in the loss of expert knowledge which does not fit a standardized model, and the dis-integration of meaningful communication between design and construction information.

Kemp, William M. "A comparison of the simultaneous communication evaluation with the sign communication proficiency interview". Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77904.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
There is a need to identify a specific test to assess one's Simultaneous Communication skills (a combination of Sign Language with the use of spoken English). The Simultaneous Communication Evaluation and the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview were examined to compare and to determine the reliability and validity for the latter. The Illinois Course Evaluation Questionnaire was used as an independent variable. Multitrait-multimethod methodology (Campbell and Fiske, 1959) was used to examine construct validity of the two methods of assessing the twenty-eight subjects' communication skills, as well as to show their reliability. The Illinois Course Evaluation Questionnaire was used as an observation tool to obtain dichotomized scores used to measure subjects' performance in the classroom as compared with the two methods of assessing the subjects' signing skills. Based on the findings of this research, the following conclusions seem justified. A. The Receptive portion of the Simultaneous Communication Evaluation generally showed a weak relationship to the other tests with the exception of the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview's retest, with which it showed only a moderate relationship. This indicates that the Receptive portion may not be a valid way of assessing Sign Language competency. B. Since the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview's test-retest and the inter-rater reliability indicators are moderately high, with their levels of significance being lower than .05, this method of testing may be regarded as an at least moderately reliable means of assessing the faculty members' skills in the use of Simultaneous Communication. C. The correlations for the Simultaneous Communication Evaluation and the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview's test and retest are .8058 and .5477 respectively. The Illinois Course Evaluation Questionnaire, in general, showed negative correlations with the first two tests with the probability of error being higher than the acceptable .05. One may conclude from this that there is no relationship between the ability to teach and the ability to use Simultaneous Communication. It is anticipated that the outcome of this study will have an impact on various programs and agencies that provide educational and/or social services to the hearing impaired in the United States. At present there is no established, standardized method of evaluating professionals Sign Language skills and this study may well set a precedent in this area.

Abstract (sommario):
A system of principles, including the principles of the balance of cognitive load and the presentation of educational material at three levels of representation (micro, macroscopic and symbolic), has been developed and scientifically substantiated to ensure effective teaching of chemical disciplines using ICT. A few provisions, which are necessary for organizing efficient learning, have been formulated. They are as follows: preventing the splitting of attention, taking into account the dual effect of an action, and taking into account the level of preliminary schooling of students. Also, the principles of design of dynamic visualizations have been devised: semantic accents, colour coding, segmentation and management of dynamic images, and use of different perception modalities. The factors influencing the result of training in chemical disciplines using ICT have been determined. Some correlations have been revealed between, on the one hand, learning outcomes and, on the other hand, personality traits of students, such as intellect types and preferred learning styles. The technology of integrating the methods, forms and means of ICT learning with due regard to the personal characteristics of students has been developed.

McGarry, Donald L. "The Electronic Bulletin Board as a Means of Professional Communication Among Physics Teachers". NSUWorks, 1994. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/716.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Teachers of secondary school physics are often physically isolated from their peers; that is, they do not have as much contact with their physics colleagues as they desire. One reason for this physical isolation is the relatively small population of students enrolled in high school physics courses resulting in small numbers of physics teachers per school. Another is that many physics teachers are teaching physics only part time. One method of communication among teachers has the potential to improve professional communication among physics teachers. This is the computer operated electronic bulletin board system (BBS). Bulletin board systems and variants have been studied for more than ten years. At least one is being operated primarily for physics teachers. This study was designed to determine the effectiveness of a BBS as a means of professional communication among physics teachers. Effectiveness was determined by surveying physics teachers in three categories: (1) those who are using a BBS to communicate, (2) those who are members of a physics teachers association, and (3) those who have neither of these formal means of communication available to them. School data (population, graduation requirements, number of physics classes and teachers, etc.) and personal data (years teaching physics, teaching assignment, certification, professional affiliations, etc.) were gathered from all three groups. The experimental group using the BBS was asked to supply additional information about the use of the BBS itself. Data were gathered using a questionnaire. The BBS users were compared to the other groups to determine whether they are representative of the physics teacher population and whether their desires for additional professional communication are similar to that of the physics teacher population. Survey responses by BBS users about the BBS itself were then used to determine the effectiveness of the BBS as a means of professional communication. Statistically significant differences among the three groups were found and are discussed. Comparisons were also made between the three groups and the population of physics teachers in the United States as presented in an American Institute of Physics report. Of greatest importance, differences exist among the three groups when tested for professional contact with physics colleagues. No differences were found among the three groups when desire for additional professional contact was tested. Survey results for the group of BBS users showed that they were experienced computer users who expressed no unusual difficulties with the mechanics of connecting to the BBS. Many did express difficulties with the BBS as a means of professional communication. Two important problems discussed are difficulty in using all system options and the small number of active participants using the BBS. BBS users expressed confidence in the system's potential as a professional communications system, but were less enthusiastic about it had served their needs. Overall, the problems experienced by BBS users were not offset sufficiently by the benefits to make the system as effective a means of professional communication as it could be. The potential of the electronic bulletin board system as a means of communication among physics teachers did not live up to its perceived potential for the group of users studied.

Abstract (sommario):
Through the partnership of standpoint theory and photovoice method, the present study looked at how teenagers, attending a multicultural education camp, define diversity, as well as what the participants considered to be the benefits and limitations of diversity. Standpoint theory gives the theoretical perspective to understand the marginalized voice of teenagers, while photovoice provides the tools to better capture and understand their marginalized voice. This study was situated in a professionally-developed camp, Camp CommUNITY, that emphasizes multicultural awareness amongst teens. Nine participants and 46 pictures were analyzed. Resulting from open coding, 11 categories and 6 themes were identified. Each theme and definitions of diversity are approached with a dialectical perspective, yielding to the model of dialectical dimensions of diversity. To answer Research Question 2, participants identified both benefits and limitations for photovoice method. Additional theoretical, practical, and methodological implications, limitations, and directions for future research are addressed.

Fortin, Daniele. "Performance assessment of DVB-T and wireless communication systems by means of cross-layer measurements". Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3425206.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis deals with the study and the application of measurement methods for the analysis of digitally modulated signals, deployed for wireless communications and television broadcasting. The goal is to develop methods allowing to efficiently assess the performance of transmission - reception systems upon the varying of transmission parameters and of the channel. In this way guidelines for the optimization of transmission set-up and of the network planning can be obtained, thus reducing the environmental impact of EM fields and at the same time providing an adequate quality of service. The methods developed, known as cross-layer measurements, provide an analysis of the signal to be simultaneously carried out at different layers. In this way correlation relationships between physical layer parameters and higher layer ones (transport, network, application) can be obtained. These cross-layer measurements are applied to a DVB-T transmission platform (Part I), in collaboration with Digilab, Bozen, and furthermore, they are deployed for the assessment of coexistence problems of IEEE 802.11b and IEEE 802.15.4 wireless networks (Part II).

Yeratziotis, George. "Guidelines for the design of a mobile phone application for deaf people". Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1007925.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Deaf people in South Africa are no longer a minority group and their needs regarding communication and interaction must therefore be taken into consideration. This demographic does not communicate and interact in the same way as hearing people, which means that any existing usability or accessibility guidelines do not apply. As a result, Deaf people do not have access to information in the same way that a hearing person does. Providing proper access to Information and Communications Technology services, which meet their particular needs, will help the hearing impaired to better integrate into society. The importance of demolishing the communication barrier between the hearing and the hearing impaired is very important. Many people assume that sign language is somehow based on oral language. However, this is not the case. Sign languages are natural visual-spatial languages, and form a contrast with spoken languages which are auditory-vocal based. Acknowledging this fact in 2008, the South African Sign Language Policy Implementation Conference together with several governmental bodies suggested that South African Sign Language should become recognized as the 12th official language of South Africa. Due to the fact that cell phone technology continues to evolve, it will remain a tool of communication upon which Deaf people heavily rely on. The cell phone fulfils a basic need for everyone, but especially for the Deaf demographic as they rely on the short message system to communicate. Deaf people are currently faced with a lack of appropriate mobile phone applications, which would allow them to communicate with hearing as well as deaf people. The primary objective of this research was therefore to make mobile technology equally accessible meaning usable to members of the Deaf demographic. The focus of the research was to investigate the communication barrier and a range of variables that can influence the deaf user’s experience. Topics such as user interface design, usability and interaction were investigated. The outcome of this research was to propose a set of guidelines that, when applied to the design of a website or to phone application accessibility, would ensure communication and interaction from a deaf user. The proposed set of guidelines was then applied to the design of the high fidelity prototype of a mobile phone application. The specific application is a messaging phone application that allows deaf users to communicate with other deaf and hearing users via short message system. A mobile phone application that allows Deaf people to send and receive messages based on the sign language alphabet. The application was named Signchat. Purpose of this was to visibly display how the guidelines were implemented in Signchat. While Signchat’s main purpose is to accommodate the needs of Deaf people, it is also a learning tool and an application that bridges the gap by allowing deaf and hearing users to communicate.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (Masters Diploma (Electrical Engineering) -- Cape Technikon, Cape Town,1991
Communication in all its various forms, has always played an important role in both the business and social environments. The conventional telephone, taken more often than not for granted, is responsible for keeping over five million people in South Africa alone, in daily contact. For the deaf and mute society, of which their are approximately 300 000 in South Africa, the telephone, on its own, has remained a useless gadget. Without the aid of a personal computer or terminal and a modem, communication for the deaf via the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) has been impossible. Use of computers may be one way of overcoming this obvious problem, but expense now becomes the more important issue. To analyse the situation, two issues had to be taken into consideration. The first is, what makes the above solution so expensive, and the secondly, is thi!t expensive equipment necessary to complete the relatively simple task of interactive communication. The technology built into todays personal computers is continuously changing and in order to keep up with these changes, regular upgrades to the computer are necessary if one intends being able to recover ones investment at a later stage. The cost of a modem, with its sophisticated error-eorrection routines and auto-dial software, can also increase the initial outlay considerably. Bearing these costs in mind, it must now be investigated how one can achieve the objective of communicating with only the bear essential. By replacing the PC's monitor with a Liquid Crystal Display, the powerful processor with a relatively simple one, eliminating the disk storage entirely, reducing the on-board ROM!RAM memory, and finally, substituting a single-chip low speed modem for the free standing modem, the cost can be drastically reduced. By combining all these components together and developing a program to control them, the result is the 'Voiceless Telephone".

Abstract (sommario):

This thesis o ers some prototypes to provide browser-based and mobile video communication services for Deaf people and evaluates these prototypes. The aim of this research is to identify an acceptable video communication technology for Deaf people by designing and evaluating several prototypes. The goal is to nd one that Deaf people would like to use in their day-to-day life. The thesis focuses on two technologies | browser-based systems and mobile applications. Several challenges emerged, for example, speci c Deaf user requirements are di cult to obtain, the technical details must be hidden from end users, and evaluation of prototypes includes both technical and social aspects. This thesis describes work to provide South African Sign Language communication for Deaf users in a disadvantaged Deaf community in Cape Town. We posit an experimental design to evaluate browser-based and mobile technologies in order to learn what constitutes acceptable video communication for Deaf users. Two browser-based prototypes and two mobile prototypes were built to this e ect. Both qualitative data and quantitative data are collected with user tests to evaluate the prototypes. The video quality of Android satis es Deaf people, and the portable asynchronous communication is convenient for Deaf users. The server performance is low on bandwidth, and will therefore cost less than other alternatives, although Deaf people feel the handset is costly.

Abstract (sommario):
The legend is a permanent fixture of human societies. Though the legends themselves are permanent, their functions and meanings can fluctuate as the context in which they are told and retold shifts. As societies move through history, certain authoritative institutions create narratives that direct those societies and frame debates within them. Issues neglected by these institutions yet experienced by members of the population can be said to be unconstructed. Social problems that have achieved some level of construction inevitably provoke those who dissent from those constructions. In these situations, members of a society look for alternative means for talking about these problems. Often they turn to the contemporary legend for this purpose. This study reviews a sample of the most popular legends in the early part of 2012 to determine the ways members of American society were dealing with the unconstructed social problems of that time.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this thesis is to identify communication challenges in micro-organizations. Thisthesis defines theoretical areas such as organizational communication and internalcommunication, with a focus on competence, uncertainty, and work disruptions. The methodsused in the collection of empirical material were participant observation, semi-structuredinterviews, and an e-mail survey. This material in combination with the theoretical backgroundhas showed the importance of technical competence in order for employees to be ableto communicate effectively. The technological solutions available today have the potential tomake a workplace much more effective and efficient by using new equipment andcommunication methods, but reaching this potential requires that everyone feels comfortablewith the use and has sufficient competence. The results indicate that since microorganizationshave only a few employees, technical competence needs to be high for everyemployee. The study also reveals the lack of a theoretical framework to evaluate the resourcesrequired for optimal communication in organizations or businesses, and introduces asuitable framework for later studies.

Abstract (sommario):
Political public relations is far from a science and candidates employ teams of public relations practitioners in an effort to gain as much support as possible from their constituency. This is most evident during an election, where a candidate attempts to garner enough support to either remain in office or be elected for the first time to the position. A way must be determined to attract individuals to vote on Election Day. The average American voter is not the individual that are being interviewed on television about the candidate they support, they are the people that spend less time thinking about the upcoming election and more time concerned with the aspects of their lives that deserve immediate attention. The individuals a person sees on television supporting a candidate at a rally or giving an interview about whom they support. The majority of voters are the ones with drastically less developed notions about the candidates seeking office and are labeled by many political analysts as swing voters. The purpose of this study is to discover if the uncertainty reduction theory can be applied to the political communication process. With voter turnout being as incredibly low and entire voting demographics feeling disenfranchised with their political representative something needs to be done. This study is poised to address both of them and propose potential remedies. It is important for a candidate to reduce a voter’s uncertainty about them and by appealing to their true beliefs, values, and attitudes a vital connection can be made. This study is important because its results will provide political candidates with a framework of how to campaign can effectively appeal to different demographics of the population, which in the end will prove more successful at building a positive public opinion than any political advertisement can.

Abstract (sommario):
Recent technological advances in telecommunications and information technology have provided the emergence of several new instruments of social communication. These innovations have created the so-called social networks and various mobile vehicles of instantaneous communication. This study aims to identify the reasons why WhatsApp has excelled in this sector, particularly in Rio de Janeiro. To achieve this objective a bibliographic research and pieces of field research involving four focus groups were conducted. The method is based on the construction of perceptual maps by using a qualitative approach. As participants classify the twelve selected media outlets, they report their views in relation to each of them, revealing gradually the reasons why use one or the other. Once achieved a degree of consensus among the participants they are submitted to a questionnaire that identifies their demographic profile and reinforces specific questions about using WhatsApp. The results suggest that, in addition to being perceived as a complete communication tool. regarding its text, sound and images exchange capacity, this instrument is the most widely adopted by their acquaintances, either friends, member of family or co-workers. The answer on how WhatsApp has become the most widely used application, however, requires further studies.

One of the leading indicators of a socially active personality is the ability to communicate with and interact with other people. In this connection, the process of interpersonal communication is increasingly complex, it is cognitive. Abstract (sommario):
Politicians are notorious for finding themselves in the middle of scandals that endanger their reputations and careers. How do they get out of it? This study tested four account strategies politicians could use: denials, excuses, justifications, and apologies. Language expectancy theory was applied to test several hypotheses. Results partially supported the concept of apologies as positive expectancy violations, but did not reveal differences among account types in terms of voters' positive impressions, blame attributions, and intent to vote for the politician. Situation, which was not expected to be a relevant factor, did result in large variability. The implications of this study for future research were also explored.

Abstract (sommario):
Mutual communication is one of the fundamental elements of human society. Its development has been enabled by sharing of sources and knowledge. Nowadays, information is considered to be one of the "production sources", some people regard it to be the most important one. Without the necessary information no company can succeed. Not only gaining of information is important, but also its spreading inside the company. Internal communication departments are in charge of these issues. The aim of this diploma thesis is to analyze internal communication of the company Johnson Controls International ltd., specifically in its Czech subsidiary (in the department of building maintenance), to identify the weak points of the internal communication and to suggest possible solutions. The thesis also aims to compare the practical functioning of the company's internal communication to the theory. The theoretical part of this thesis describes the company's internal communication and the IT communication means used. The practical part introduces the company and subsequently shows how its internal communication works including the description of the IT communication means used. The thesis also evaluates the current state of communication within the company, provides a comparison to theoretical bases and problem identification. Solutions of these problems are offered in the final part of this thesis.

Abstract (sommario):
Nursing home residents often experience loneliness and social isolation. Research indicates that visitation via the telephone can decrease feelings of social isolation and loneliness. The purpose of this study was to introduce visual images to the telephone conversations of this population. It was hypothesized that the residents receiving this intervention would evidence decreased levels of loneliness and a greater sense of social support. This hypothesis was not supported by the data; however, emotional and social loneliness scores did show positive trends that may have been due to the intervention.

Rogers, Angela Susan. "Drawing encounters : a practice-led investigation into collaborative drawing as a means of revealing tacit elements of one-to-one social encounter". Thesis, University of the Arts London, 2008. http://ualresearchonline.arts.ac.uk/4926/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
What might we discover by drawing the spaces between us? Situated in the field of drawing research, the thesis begins to articulate the term dialogic drawing through the development of the Drawing Encounter. Building on David Bohm and Martin Buber’s work on dialogue and encounter, the Drawing Encounter (using drawing rather than speech) is a new method to elicit tacit elements of one-to-one social interaction. The research is largely situated in the public arena where the author met strangers using collaborative drawing as a means of interaction. The drawings themselves prompted conversations about meeting in this way. Locations for the meetings included several train journeys, an arts therapy centre, an international conference, a drawing exhibition and an art college. Throughout the inquiry drawing was employed to collate, analyse and synthesise the data generated by all the research activities. The thesis presents significant encounters and drawings with participants’ commentaries and references to Bohm’s model of dialogue and Buber’s notion of the between. The drawing strategies that emerged during the inquiry are discussed in methodological terms in the context of naturalistic inquiry. The findings propose that by providing a novel means to facilitate and interrogate one-to-one interaction the Drawing Encounter method can enhance existing personal and professional relationships. Findings from researcher facilitated encounters indicate that the method has potential for applications in educational and professional situations where intra- and inter-personal issues are relevant. The thesis expands our understanding of visual arts processes as methods of creative inquiry by articulating the role of drawing as a research strategy and a materialising practice. It suggests that visual analogy can address pressing questions of human co-existence, by showing how what we do in the spaces between us can help us remain individuals yet still feel connected.

Summet, Valerie Henderson. "Facilitating communication for deaf individuals with mobile technologies". Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/33878.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Communication between deaf individuals and hearing individuals can be very difficult. For people who are born deaf, English is often a second language with the first language being American Sign Language (ASL). Very few hearing people in the United States sign or are aware of Deafness, Deaf culture, or how to appropriately communicate with people with hearing loss. In this thesis, I concentrate on the role that mobile technologies can play in ameliorating some of these issues. In formative work with Deaf teenagers in the metro-Atlanta area, I investigate the role that communication technologies play in the lives of many Deaf individuals and examine how these devices have effected their communication patterns and social circles. Specifically, the teens identified problems communicating with hearing individuals such as close friends and family in face-to-face situations. Having identified sign language use at home as one of the earliest interventions for Deaf children, I investigated the use of mobile phones for learning survival-level ASL. I created a prototype software application which presented short ASL lessons via either a mobile phone or desktop web-browser. The software presented the lessons via one of two different scheduling methods designed to take advantage of the spacing effect during learning. I designed and conducted a study of forty individuals with no prior ASL knowledge which compared the effects of both scheduling algorithm and platform. My results show that individuals who used a mobile phone platform and received a group of lessons at one time performed better on post-test receptive and generative ASL metrics than did participants in the three other conditions.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis studies how one can convey meaning in games by utilising pictorial feedback alone. With the help of Peircean visual semiotics the signs for the case study Among Ripples are assembled and later analysed in detail. As a subtopic the thesis also explores if it is possible to embed pictorial feedback into the game world instead of having it superimposed. The results showed that it is possible to convey some feedback with pictorial means alone, and that the entry points for understanding are not the same between different people. They look at different cues from the pictorial feedback constructed.

Hayes, Jon Laurence. "A historical perspective and descriptive approach for American Sign Language and English bilingual studies in the community college setting". Diss., The University of Arizona, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185086.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this dissertation was three-fold. The first intent was to investigate the historical role of English and American Sign Language (ASL) in the communication, education and culture of deaf/Deaf people in America. The second purpose was to investigate sociolinguistical and physiological properties of American Sign Language in light of language learning among the deaf. And the third objective was to research bilingual education methodologies in order to interface knowledge and practices from bilingual education, communication and ASL research to the field of post-secondary education of the deaf within the framework of bilingual education. Evidence demonstrates that the history of language policies and educational practices for the deaf are strongly influenced by the majority language of English. A primary goal of education of the deaf has been the assimilation of deaf people into the hearing society. An avenue for this integration has traditionally involved the exclusion of ASL from the classroom and the mandate of Signed English systems and/or aural/oral communication. The incorporation of a cross-disciplinary blend of communication, bilingual education and ASL sociolinguistic aspects form the foundation for further investigation. This dissertation should serve as an impetus and reference point for others wishing to advance the education of the deaf, utilizing a bilingual approach.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the present study is to theoretically ground and practically present how the sexual identity of homosexual individuals is constructed through the language they use in an American TV series Queer as Folk. Since the LGBT (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) individuals have become a more visible group in the present-day society both in Lithuania and abroad, it is natural that there is a certain degree of interest in the lives of non-heterosexual people, their customs, communication patterns, the relationship among themselves as well as the relationship between them and the heterosexual, heteronormative society around them. One of the most recent branches of linguistics researches the peculiarities of the speech and speaking patterns of homosexual individuals. This study is a humble attempt to look, at least superficially, at this new branch of linguistics which has not yet been research in Lithuania. The thesis is divided into two separate parts: the first part of the thesis, the theoretical part, deals with aspects of alternative human sexualities and explains some sociological aspects of homosexuality. Also, some basic features of the Lithuanian and American LGBT communities are presented. This part theoretically covers the link between sexual identity and language. Theoretical part also presents earlier research carried out by scholars in the fields of sociolinguistics, sexuality and sociology. Also explained are the gay communication strategies, according to... [to full text]

Abstract (sommario):
The transition of students with moderate to severe handicaps from school to work and adult life has become a principal concern of special education over the last decade. Despite of these attentions, there has been little attention to the need for including plans for the student's communication needs in his or her Transition Plan. Thus, it is important to study the relationship between the inclusion of a student's communication needs in his or her Transition Plan and the effectiveness of communication programs. The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between the Transition Plan and the effectiveness of communication programs, considering the individual's functioning level, family involvement, and communication mode.

Lawrence, Jill. "University journeys: alternative entry students and their construction of a means of succeeding in an unfamiliar university culture". University of Southern Queensland, Faculty of Arts, 2004. http://eprints.usq.edu.au/archive/00001456/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This research study takes a multi-disciplinary perspective, using critical discourse theory, transactional communication theory and cross-cultural theory to contribute insight into the experiences of alternative entry students as they strive to access and participate in higher education. The study seeks to determine how these students learn to persevere: how they construct their means of succeeding in the university culture. The methodological structure of the research comprises a collective case study design, encompassing critical ethnography, action research and reflexive approaches to guide a deeper understanding of the experiences of studying at a regional Australian university. The reflexive nature of the research facilitated the development of an original theoretical construct, the ‘deficit-discourse’ shift, which challenges higher education policy and practice, in particular, in relation to academics’ roles in making their discourses explicit and in collaborating with students to facilitate students’ perseverance and success. The research has also generated two models: the Framework for Student Engagement and Mastery and the Model for Student Success at University. The Framework re-conceptualises the university as a dynamic culture made up of a multiplicity of sub-cultures, each with its own literacy or discourse. The Framework recasts the first year experience as a journey, with students’ transition re-conceptualised as the processes of gaining familiarity with and negotiating these new literacies and discourses whereas perseverance is viewed as the processes of mastering and demonstrating them. The Model provides a three step practical strategy (incorporating reflective practice, socio-cultural practice and critical practice) for achieving this engagement: for empowering students to negotiate, master and demonstrate their mastery of the university culture’s multiple discourses. Together, the two models provide students with a means of succeeding in the new university culture.
