Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Marx, famously, ”placed Hegel on his feet” by arguing the primacy of economic and material processes over the spiritual and intellectual. In his analysis, the world advanced, dialectically, through growing contradictions between means of production and relations of production (property relations), mediated by recurrent class struggles. Although material scarcity is by no means absent from the contemporary world, an important scarce resource analysed well by Hegel and largely neglected by Marx, and which is essential today, is self-esteem, including the right to define oneself. Using examples from identity politics in a number of countries, I am trying to show that a democratisation of the means of communication may be a key to a less volatile world and an important dimension of a more equitable world society.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to the issues of the global Internet system as a means of intercultural communication, definition of the general concept of web-mediated communication, its functions, features and types in the modern world, which have introduced new forms of dialogue and interaction into socium. Having stepped across national borders and uniting the world’s information resources into a single system, the Internet has become a means of intercultural communication with its own specific genres, defined conditions and factors of communication derived from technological multilinear communication means. Currently, online platforms represent a major means for communities to communicate globally, provide news coverage, exchange ideas, share data and knowledge, study and have fun. In this context, the research of web-mediated communication, its genre characteristics and peculiar features is of utmost relevance, as cultural practice and dialogue between diverse cultures are essential tools in promoting mutual understanding, intercultural learning and exchange. Since there are multiple approaches to defining genres of web-mediated communication, the focus of the article was on revealing their peculiar features and affect on intercultural communication. It is shown that genres in web-mediated communication are based on the technological factor, with their characteristic features being increased complexity and multi-dimensionality, creolization, responsiveness and interactivity as well as enormous user outreach, relevance, accessibility, autonomy and hypertextuality.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper seeks to examine the claim made by Raymond Williams that the means of communication are a means of production. While agreeing with the central claim by Williams, the paper argues that the model which Williams’ represents this claim with is insufficiently realized. By looking at the work of Marx and Althusser in relation to this claim, we suggest a new conceptual tool to actualize Williams’ claims.

Abstract (sommario):
Email communication has become an integral part of the communication structure within organisations, but the problems it can cause are rarely assessed. The defects associated with email, which are related to both the quantity and the quality of email need to be understood by employees for them to become more effective users of email. Email training within organisations tends to focus on how to use email as a software package, without looking at when it is appropriate to use email and how to get your message across effectively. This thesis first explores email defects and how they impact on organisations.

Abrahams, Rifqah. "Social media as a means of communication with external stakeholders". Thesis, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11838/2314.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MTech (Public Relations Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2011.
This research focuses on whether social media is an effective means of communication to external stakeholders and investigates communication between Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) to its student-stakeholder group on four levels of interaction; namely institution, faculty, department and subjects. It provides answers to the questions, "How does CPUT communicate to students?" "What is the CPUT student-stakeholder's preferred method of communication?" and "What content does the CPUT student-stakeholder want to hear about?" to answer the bigger question, "Is social media an effective means of communication to CPUT students?" Using a conceptual framework based on Edward Freeman's work on stakeholder communication and Grunig's communication theory, the research considers the role that social media could play in the communication mix; whether CPUT should communicate to students using a medium on which they are already active; as well as what is/are an appropriate method/s of communication to reach student-stakeholders. Findings include the students' perception of social media as well as the state of communication from CPUT to the students and the platform/s the student-stakeholder would prefer. Further research is recommended to consider the use of a mobile platform for communication to students.

Laughlin, Leo. "Full duplex wireless communication by means of electrical balance duplexing". Thesis, University of Bristol, 2016. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.702210.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The mass adoption of smartphones has led to a huge demand for wireless services, and 5G mobile is expected to deliver a 1000 fold capacity increase over the coming decade. However, this increase in demand will not been accompanied by a corresponding increase in the spectrum allocated for mobile networks, and therefore significant technological advances . will be required in order to reach this goal. Furthermore, due to the fragmented availability of spectrum globally, the number of frequency bands in use around the globe continues to increase, and thus a tunable radio frequency front end is required to enable roaming and cost effective manufacture. Duplexing techniques based on self-interference cancellation can increase spectral efficiency by enabling simultaneous transmission and reception on the same frequency, and have the potential to replace fixed frequency duplexing filters to create a tunable radio frequency front end. This thesis investigates self-interference cancellation technologies in the context of frequency division and division free duplexing in future mobile devices. The focus of this thesis is the Electrical Balance Duplexer (EBD), which implements a form of self-interference cancellation to provide high transmit-to-receive (Tx-Rx) isolation whilst allowing simultaneous transmission and reception through a single antenna. This contribution offers several advancements concerning the design and operation of the EBD, placing emphasis on investigating practical issues that may affect the suitability and performance of this circuit in mobile device applications. The results and analysis presented in this thesis have demonstrated that time-domain and frequency domain antenna impedance variation can have a substantial impact on the Tx-Rx isolation achieved by the EBD. A realistic evaluation of EBD isolation bandwidth is presented, and a novel method for maximising isolation is proposed. It is shown that circuit adaptation is required to mitigate time-domain antenna impedance variation which arises due to environmental interaction, and requirements for antenna impedance tracking in user interaction and indoor mobile scenarios are determined. A novel EBD circuit architecture combining passive and active cancellation methods is proposed and implemented in hardware, demonstrating a substantial improvement by providing >80 dB of isolation over an 80 MHz bandwidth. This thesis also presents an in-depth theoretical analysis of self-interference coupling in non-ideal EBDs, and from this derives a novel circuit adaptation algorithm which can achieve the required accuracy but is orders of magnitude faster and computationally less expensive than existing methods. It can be concluded that the EBD is a promising candidate technology for implementing tunable duplexing functionality in mobile devices, and that the environmental effects and non-ideal circuit characteristics which are typical of this application can be successfully mitigated.

Lobel, Joshua M. "Building information : means and methods of communication in design and construction". Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/43747.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2008.
This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 73-77).
Architects are trained and practiced in the means and methods of design. These are distinct from the physical means and methods of construction, which have traditionally been in the hands of contractors. The successful realization of construction does not necessitate or rely on a direct link between the processes of design and construction. However, the constructibility of a design is dependent on an effective means of communicating between the two. This thesis illustrates that the perceived complexity of constructibility is often predicated on the efficacy of communication between the designer and the contractor. I present three models of communication: a linear transmissive model similar to that of Shannon and Weaver, a "speech-circuit" model based on that of Saussure, and a semiotic-constructionist model derived from Peirce and Papert. Through interviews, observations, and experiments with practicing architects and architecture students, I investigate the implications of these models on the perceived and contractual roles and responsibilities of architects and contractors. My findings suggest that in design, communication is also an act of design and construction. Best illustrated by the constructionist model of communication, acts of making and re-making are fundamental to the way that architects and contractors relate to design information. The automation of these acts through emerging technologies - such as BIM - lead to increased reliance on fixed data constructs in lieu of dynamic, individual interpretations of information. This can result in the loss of expert knowledge which does not fit a standardized model, and the dis-integration of meaningful communication between design and construction information.

Kemp, William M. "A comparison of the simultaneous communication evaluation with the sign communication proficiency interview". Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77904.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
There is a need to identify a specific test to assess one's Simultaneous Communication skills (a combination of Sign Language with the use of spoken English). The Simultaneous Communication Evaluation and the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview were examined to compare and to determine the reliability and validity for the latter. The Illinois Course Evaluation Questionnaire was used as an independent variable. Multitrait-multimethod methodology (Campbell and Fiske, 1959) was used to examine construct validity of the two methods of assessing the twenty-eight subjects' communication skills, as well as to show their reliability. The Illinois Course Evaluation Questionnaire was used as an observation tool to obtain dichotomized scores used to measure subjects' performance in the classroom as compared with the two methods of assessing the subjects' signing skills. Based on the findings of this research, the following conclusions seem justified. A. The Receptive portion of the Simultaneous Communication Evaluation generally showed a weak relationship to the other tests with the exception of the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview's retest, with which it showed only a moderate relationship. This indicates that the Receptive portion may not be a valid way of assessing Sign Language competency. B. Since the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview's test-retest and the inter-rater reliability indicators are moderately high, with their levels of significance being lower than .05, this method of testing may be regarded as an at least moderately reliable means of assessing the faculty members' skills in the use of Simultaneous Communication. C. The correlations for the Simultaneous Communication Evaluation and the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview's test and retest are .8058 and .5477 respectively. The Illinois Course Evaluation Questionnaire, in general, showed negative correlations with the first two tests with the probability of error being higher than the acceptable .05. One may conclude from this that there is no relationship between the ability to teach and the ability to use Simultaneous Communication. It is anticipated that the outcome of this study will have an impact on various programs and agencies that provide educational and/or social services to the hearing impaired in the United States. At present there is no established, standardized method of evaluating professionals Sign Language skills and this study may well set a precedent in this area.

Abstract (sommario):
Standards by definition are technical documents, applied in various fields of human activity. They are developed and approved on the basis of consolidated results of science, technology and experience, being used every day by enterprises, manufacturers, public bodies, and by institutions of education, science and culture. The understanding and the use of standards is essential for the entire academic community and they have a major impact on increasing the visibility of scientific production through the connection and interoperability of information. Today, intonational organisations for standartization try to unite the standardization activity with the research and innovation through a so-called „Integrated Approach”. This is a concept that offers a mechanism that ensures the integration of standardization in research and innovation. The standards integrate perfectly into different stages of scientific research, from studying the terminology and presenting the sources of information, to the compatibility standards, which aim to integrate innovation with existing technologies. The libraries, as institutions that provide information for the entire research cycle, and also manage the collections of data and provide access to various informational resources, quickly adapt to the new techniques and standardized rules across all the library processes.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper deals with the urgent problem of enabling better communication of IT-specialists in their business and interpersonal interaction using information and communication technologies, including cloud technologies. It is emphasized, that effective communication is an integral part of the successful professional work of IT-professionals, but in recent years it has undergone significant transformations, which have been expressed in new forms and means of communication, its content changes, its complications and volume increases, the need to improve its accuracy, and the level of understanding for a wide range of people. Certain peculiarities of communication in the IT-environment have been discussed. It is noted that typical forms of communication in the IT-environment are synchronous and asynchronous ones. The authors insist that during their professional career IT-specialists communicate in the professional community from a variety of positions and common types of task formulation can be expressed through verbal or symbolic communication means. Due to the specifics of their professional activities, IT-professionals often need to communicate using synchronous communication (chats, video chats, audio chats, instant messaging) and asynchronous communication (email, forums, comments) tools, hence there is a demand to teach corresponding communication skills at universities. Certain practical examples of teaching communication skills using modern technologies are given. Advantages of cloud technologies for better communication within a company or an educational institution are presented. Microsoft Office 365 services, which can be successfully used to enable better communication and collaboration within a company or an educational institution are analyzed.

Білоконенко, Л. А. Crisis Communication of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Counteracting COVID-19: Sociolinguistic Features. Atlantis Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.31812/123456789/4649.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper examines the discursive and linguistic means of appeals of the Ukrainian President V. Zelensky in 2020 to citizens on the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our analysis results suggest that in Ukraine, the rhetoric of the President's appeals demonstrates the spread of nationally oriented power mechanisms of discourse, which depend on the social context more than in highly developed countries. We compare the organization of V. Zelensky's statements about COVID-19, which are addressed to ordinary citizens and government officials. We conclude that the President appeals most to national values and symbols, transforming them into a radical national hope.

Гарлицька, Т. С. Substandard Vocabulary in the System of Urban Communication. Криворізький державний педагогічний університет, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.31812/123456789/3912.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to substandard elements which are considered as one of the components in the system of urban forms of communication. The Object of our research is substandard vocabulary, the Subject is structural characteristics of the modern city language, the Purpose of the study is to define the main types of substandard vocabulary and their role in the system of urban communication. The theoretical base of our research includes the scientific works of native and foreign linguists, which are devoted to urban linguistics (B. Larin, M. Makovskyi, V. Labov, T. Yerofeieva, L. Pederson, R. McDavid, O. Horbach, L. Stavytska, Y. Stepanov, S. Martos). Different lexical and phraseological units, taken from the Ukrainian, Russian and American Dictionaries of slang and jargon, serve as the material of our research. The main components of the city language include literary language, territorial dialects, different intermediate transitional types, which are used in the colloquial everyday communication but do not have territorial limited character, and social dialects. The structural characteristics, proposed in the article, demonstrate the variety and correlation of different subsystems of the city language. Today peripheral elements play the main role in the city communication. They are also called substandard, non-codified, marginal, non-literary elements or the jargon styles of communication. Among substandard elements of the city language the most important are social dialects, which include such subsystems as argot, jargon and slang. The origin, functioning and characteristics of each subsystem are studied on the material of linguistic literature of different countries. It is also ascertained that argot is the oldest form of sociolects, jargon divides into corporative and professional ones, in the structure of slangy words there are common and special slang. Besides, we can speak about sociolectosentrism of the native linguistics and linguemosentrism of the English tradition of slang nomination. Except social dialects, the important structural elements of the city language are also intermediate transitional types, which include koine, colloquialisms, interdialect, surzhyk, pidgin and creole. Surzhyk can be attributed to the same type of language formations as pidgin and creole because these types of oral speech were created mostly by means of the units mixing of the obtruded language of the parent state with the elements of the native languages.

Abstract (sommario):
Peculiar features of digital environment include: integration of ICTs; use of local and global networks and resources; support and development of qualitatively new technologies of information processing; active use of modern means, methods and forms of teaching in the educational process. The organization of activities in terms of digital learning environment provides appropriate changes in the interaction between subjects of the educational process. Today, means and technologies of the information and communication networks (ICNs), in particular the Internet, which custom and operational-procedural properties were changed at the initial stage from closed local to open ones at present, become widespread. The development of ICNs (from closed local to open ones) changes the typology of learning environments. The following models of learning environments, which widely use ICT and ICN tools (with basic features that characterize them) are distinguished: using the local communication network for presentation of educational information; using the local communication network and open network resources; using open network resources; for independent use of open network resources directly in the classroom by a student; for use of open network resources by a student in the process of independent learning activity; for use by a student educational resources, specially created by a teacher, as well as resources of an open networks in his independent learning activity.
